Catch Of The Day: Eyeless Shrimp

Good morning!
This is good follow-up to the article I posted the other day.

Gulf Seafood Deformities Raise Questions Among Scientists And Fisherman (VIDEO)
While the true extent of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was not known for about 4 years, as Al Jazeera notes in the video above, the repercussions of BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico may become apparent more quickly.
Discovering eyeless shrimp, lesioned fish and other mutated and underdeveloped seafood, fisherman in the Gulf are pointing fingers at the BP spill. Biologist Dr. Darryl Felder told the news agency that Gulf seafood populations are dropping at alarming rates and that species richness is “diminished.”
The Gulf Restoration Network‘s Scott Eust explained the bizarre shrimp deformities. “We have some evidence of deformed shrimp, which is another developmental impact. So, that shrimp’s grandmother was exposed to oil while the mother was developing, but it’s the grandchild of the shrimp that was exposed grows up with no eyes.”
Al Jazeera reports that both the government and BP maintain that Gulf seafood is safe. BP released a statement last week, saying, “Seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is among the most tested in the world, and according to the FDA and NOAA, it is as safe now as it was before the accident.”
A study published last October in the journal Environmental Health Perspectivesfound that the FDA allowed “up to 10,000 times too much contamination” and didn’t identify the risks to children and pregnant women posed by contaminated seafood. Additionally, the study charged that the FDA’s “scientific standards [in 2010] were less stringent” than after the Exxon Valdez spill, reported OnEarth.
Government testing standards were questioned months after the spill. In December 2010, a toxicologist with a team challenging the FDA’s seafood testing said, the “FDA simply overlooked an important aspect of safety in their protocol,” reported MSNBC.
Despite sales dropping precipitously following the spill, the Gulf’s seafood industry was given a boost after the government’s Defense Commissary Agency began selling Gulf seafood products on 72 East Coast military bases in early 2011, reported AP.

I don’t believe for a moment that the seafood is safe to eat. Thoughts? Blog me.

The Simplest Prescription of All
Do you really drink enough water? Most of my new patients do not—and they often are shocked to learn about the health problems associated with chronic low-level dehydration (a condition many people don’t even know they have).
It’s linked to surprising health problems, such as high blood pressure, as well as…
Irritability, depression and lack of focus.
Pain, stiff joints, muscle spasms and headache.
Sugar and carbohydrate cravings, and weight gain.
Indigestion, heartburn and constipation.
Despite the strong, science-based association between inadequate water consumption and common ailments, most conventional doctors fail to “prescribe” sufficient water intake for their patients.
But in my opinion, a prescription for an individualized, correct amount of daily water should be at the top of any treatment plan for most conditions.
Water is absolutely critical for the normal functioning of our bodies.
First, it is an integral part of our blood and carries nutrients to tissues throughout the body and to the brain. Among other things, water also lubricates joints, carries oxygen throughout our bodies, and allows us to eliminate waste via the kidneys, bowels, skin and lungs.
Many people are confused about the amount of water they should drink each day. So I recommend a simple formula: Weigh yourself and divide that number in half.
This is the base amount, in ounces, of plain water you should drink in a day. (I do not count other fluids—even green tea—toward this total because they contain compounds that reduce the net amount of water that is bioavailable.)
Consume 80% of your water intake at least 30 minutes before or after meals.
(Example: A 150-pound woman should have at least 75 ounces of water a day, with 60 ounces consumed away from food). Then add more water based on such factors as…
Eight ounces for every 30 minutes of activity that promotes sweating (such as strenuous exercise or use of a sauna or hot tub.
Four ounces for every 30 minutes spent outdoors in temperatures above 80ºF…in low-humidity (less than 45%) winter outdoor activity…or at an altitude above 8,000 feet (as can occur with skiing or flying) .
An amount equal to the coffee, black tea or caffeinated soda you consume.
People with fever, diarrhea and/or vomiting also need to replenish water that is lost from their bodies. Check with your doctor on the amount you need if you have one of these health concerns.
Alcohol and several medications, including antihistamines, diuretics, blood pressure drugs, antidepressants and antipsychotic medicines, contribute to dehydration.
If you drink alcohol, drink twice as much water as the amount of alcoholic beverages you consume.
If you take a prescription drug, ask your pharmacist about increasing your daily water intake.
Caution: If you have heart failure or a kidney, liver or adrenal disorder, speak with your doctor before changing your water-drinking habits—these conditions increase water retention.

Someone in some country needs to put a check on the big corporations that operate in countries all over the world without any concerns expect profit.

Now we have to worry about mad cow disease found in cows in California. If people really understood how that disease started they would get the message that we need to regulate these corporations.
The disease originated because of corporations grinding up dead cattle and feeding it to the other cattle. Effectively making grain eaters meat eating cannibals.

Nawzad pretty pathetic that we have to hear more about this from an international news source.
So much for the bow to the Saudi King – did not cover controlling the media.

BP and the politicos that pander to them are rich enough to eat seafood from anywhere else, while the folks along the Gulf have to deal with tainted seafood…if the chemicals were harmful to the fish, then they’re not fit to eat…Thanks BP..
April 25th, 2012 at 7:36 am
Al Jazeera huh? I wouldn’t believe anything they report. If it tastes good and smells good, eat it. This is just a bunch of fear mongering and i’ll have none of that!
April 25th, 2012 at 7:38 am
Remember the Simpsons cartoon episode where Homer’s boss, Mr Burns ate the 3 eye fish in front of everyone…
That cartoon was written long before this disaster and I would like to see FDA, BP execs and any idiot who agrees with them to do the same: eat it, swallow it and do not vomit out the GULF SEAFOOD eaten!!!
April 25th, 2012 at 7:39 am
Such incidents are the natural outcome of a Corporatist Oligarchy, which is what America has turned into.
If you don’t know what the terms “corporatist” or “oligarchy” mean, then you can thank the American public school system, rated was one of the worst in the entire world at the high school level of academics.
April 25th, 2012 at 7:41 am
Corporations have virtually no interest in the common good since profit is always the bottom line and it’s clear that the FDA will say and do anything, as was already mentioned, that the money directs them to.
As a nation we are indescribably nasty and dismissive to our citizenry in a way that makes me wonder just what is the point of this country anymore.
This is not about ideological differences but crapping on one another like some feudal class system, not the democracy that I thought stood for the benefit of all.
People will now say anything that gets them theirs and screw the rest and that is horribly depraved.
April 25th, 2012 at 7:43 am
The ecological damage from the Exxon Valdez is as bad now as it was then. The ecological damage to the Gulf will not be rectified 100 years from now.
But BP, the politicians, and the government will tell us otherwise.
April 25th, 2012 at 7:44 am
Frank, what you said amounts to a sad but honest truth. If only more people would pull their heads out of the sand and realize this.
Everyone’s too busy watching reality shows or playing angry birds to actually get off their asses and do anything.

14 Days After Heart Surgery
We all know that heart surgery is a serious procedure, and that just like any other surgery, there is always a risk for major infection.
But recently, a group of researchers were shocked when their study showed that the kind of major infection most frequently associated with heart surgery wasn’t at all what they expected (an infection at the site of the incision)—it was pneumonia.
And even more surprisingly, this dangerous condition often either didn’t occur or wasn’t diagnosed while the patient was still in the hospital during the post-op stay.
The researchers had hypothesized that any such dangerous condition would be evident during this critical period. Instead, it was usually diagnosed about two full weeks after the operation!
DANGEROUS POST-OP INFECTIONS
The objective of the study was to find out what types of major infections occur after heart surgery and when they occur.
So researchers collected clinical records of 5,185 male and female heart surgery patients with an average age of 64 at 10 medical centers—nine in the US and one in Canada—over the course of eight months.
The surgeries included coronary artery bypass and aortic valve and/or mitral valve procedures.
First major finding:
Researchers discovered that about 5% of heart surgery patients contracted major infections. And at the top of the list was not an infection at the site of the surgical incision, as the researchers had expected.
Pneumonia, a lung infection, was the most common infection.
It was followed by clostridium difficile colitis (an infection in the colon that can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and sometimes fever, nausea, weight loss and dehydration)…
bloodstream infection…infection at the site of the surgical incisions…and, lastly, mediastinitis (the infection and inflammation of the area between the lungs).
I don’t have to tell you that pneumonia and these other types of infections can cause weeks and sometimes even months of discomfort, serious complications or even death.
John Puskas, MD, MSc, a coauthor of the study and the head of cardiac surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, said that he’s not entirely sure why pneumonia came out on top, but he has some theories.
For one thing, after a heart operation, breathing is often uncomfortable, which causes recovering patients to take shallow breaths.
As a result, the lungs are not well-aerated, and bacteria that would normally be exhaled with deep breaths are left inside to multiply.
Moreover, heart disease itself can cause fluid to build up in the lungs. Another potential conduit for infection is the breathing tube that’s inserted into the lungs during surgery.
I asked Dr. Puskas whether these infections implied hospital error, such as using unsterile instruments or other supplies.
He said that the study uncovered no evidence of that and that these serious post-op infections most likely occur because patients have low-level, preexisting infections before surgery…
or because their immune systems are too weak to fight off bacteria that are naturally present in the air, in their lungs or on their skin after surgery.
Dr. Puskas added that the risks for infection during a heart operation can be reduced by appropriate safety procedures, but they can’t be eliminated.
WHY WERE THE INFECTIONS DELAYED?
The second major finding of the study was equally important: Only about half of the infections were diagnosed during patients’ post-op hospital stays of five to seven days.
The other half were diagnosed much later—about 14 days after the surgery, on average.
This is worrisome, because patients may assume that once they’re home, they’re healthy, so there’s no need to look out for symptoms of infection.
It’s also concerning, said Dr. Puskas, because patients at home are not prompted by nurses and respiratory therapists to walk around, breathe deeply and clear mucus from their lungs, which can help prevent and treat infection. And they won’t get immediate care if they need it.
Dr. Puskas said that this time frame might illustrate how long it takes some infections to appear. And sometimes, he added, the reason for the delay is that diagnosis itself can be a lengthy process that can require multiple visits over the course of a few days or weeks.
WHAT YOU MUST DO
Dr. Puskas said that it’s important for heart surgery patients to be on the lookout for symptoms of infection after the surgery—even after they return home feeling fine.
Be especially alert for symptoms of pneumonia, which may include chills, fever, cough, shortness of breath, a sharp chest pain when you inhale, headache or pain anywhere in your body, said Dr. Puskas.
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of these. And be diligent about following your doctor’s post-op advice—walk around regularly, cough to clear mucus from your lungs, and breathe deeply.

This week, the Senate may not reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.
Since this bipartisan legislation first passed in 1994, it’s been reauthorized twice without a hitch. And it’s been tremendously successful in helping to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
So it should be a no-brainer, right? Not to the Senate GOP, not in an election year, apparently.
Republicans are willing to throw away the entire law now that it helps protect lesbians, gay men, undocumented immigrants, and Native Americans. Do they believe acts of violence committed against these groups don’t matter as much?
The Senate’s voting on the Act any moment now, and we need to put pressure on the GOP to pass it.
Since this law passed, it has helped reduce the annual rate of domestic violence by an astounding 53 percent. The rate of women killed by an intimate partner has dropped 34 percent.
Its programs, including violence prevention programs, shelters and rape crisis centers, and funding for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes have made a world of difference in giving victims of violence a safe place to turn.
It has without a doubt saved thousands of lives.
And Senate Republicans are ready to roll back all our progress.
This year’s Act would make sure that LGBT Americans receive equal treatment for services, it would make it easier for undocumented immigrants to come forward as victims and provide temporary visas in certain cases, and let Native Americans on reservations go to tribal courts for abuse cases. With these additional protections, the GOP has promised to fight it every step of the way.
If Congress votes against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, all of these programs could grind to a halt, and the hundreds of thousands of women who rely on them will once again be left on their own.
Unfortunately, the GOP’s resistance is just another example of putting women’s health and well-being on the line in order to score a few cheap, political points with their base.
We can’t stand by and let them take away this critical legislation.
Before the Senate votes this week, add your name in support of protecting all victims of domestic and sexual violence, no matter who they are:
And keep an eye on when they do vote — because we’ll be keeping the pressure on.
Thanks for your help,
Debbie

SCOTUS is deciding Arizona’s immigration law. It will probably be decided along political lines 5 to 4.
All that says is the supreme law of the land is based on Just-Us justice. It is so interesting that the white portion of SCOTUS is never willing to discuss the racial prejudiced part of the law.
It is obvious that the law can not be practiced without some cop being able to stop a person based on his color, or the way he talks, or what he is wearing? It that’s not profiling what is?
White america continues to find only profiling whites as racially unlawful. One day we will have the numbers. I hope I live long enough to stick it to those bastards the way they are doing it to us today.

Blue Dog Democrats going extinct? That’s good news.
It was people like the blue dogs who opposed the Public Option and pressured the President to train-wreck the health care plan with the Individual Mandate gift to health insurance corporations — while tens of millions of poor Americans still aren’t helped at all — and set up the constitutional battle in the Supreme Court that will gut all that work.
(I believe the Individual Mandate is unconstitutional.) So if the people who then derailed true reform now pay for their opposition to a popular, constitutional plan (Public Option had about 70 percent support), perhaps we’ll have a real chance to fix health care after the Supreme Court rules in June … assuming the President has learned his lesson ….

A not-so-fond farewell to these DINOs–Democrats in name only. Just keeping themselves in office is not a motivating factor for the rest of us. This is why I only contribute to individuals I respect and not to the umbrella organizations.

Why they call themselves “Blue Dog Democrats” is not so much a mystery if you consider that those dogs are making real Democrats blue because they are really republicans using the designation “Democrat” to get elected.

cDelighted to see the Blue Dogs lose. Wonder if this will teach them anything about loyalty. Nah.

I think just Dog conservatives would be a better title for these few that helped slow down, or prevented more getting done when they had the chance. Not a surprise seeing them voted out.
Any day a conservative politican who’s more interested in themselves are ousted is a good day for the american people and our way of life.
April 25th, 2012 at 1:02 pm
What will you say if those who ousted the Conservative Democrats go up against a Republican and loose. There is that possibility you know. How will you fell about the victory then.
In New York State the ultra conservative Rep. beat out the Moderate Rep., but lost to the Dem. who seemed n\more middle of the road. That could happen in Pa. You never know.

In the 2010 election, the Blue Dog incumbents lost over 50% of their seats, while the Progressive Democratic incumbents won 90%.

Michelle, have we forgotten about Zimmerman? I see a number of important issues in this case.
The one that stands out is that of a non-trained person patrolling a neighborhood with a gun. Some people because of their mental make up should never carry a weapon that includes some law enforcement persons, others can be properly trained.
An untrained person can more easily find a reason to use a weapon. It is less likely for a person regardless of his purpose to attack a law enforcement person, although it often happens.
There was an educated reason for the switchboard to caution Zimmerman from following, something training would have told him. To do so was a reckless disregard for his and Trayvon’s life and safety.

Brittany, you have championed a group that have no champions. The catholic church is run by a bunch of pedophiles who hate women.
Nuns have for years been in the background and as someone pointed out – left to fend for themselves. They have little support from the priests yet the priests are now to be sure the nuns tow the line.
Women in the church are not treated with the respect they deserve – be they a nun or parishioner.
I too was raised a Catholic, 15 yrs. of a Catholic education and worked in a Catholic hospital for 42.5 years. I care about people – charity and treating all people alike are the values I live by.
When our ethics teacher – a college professor priest, who wrote the book we studied from, refused to accept any questions regarding the church’s rules – I started to doubt the church.
I did not need to be convinced of something, however when the teacher refused to give any background to reason, and we were told just to accept it – I doubted things. And I had the right to question things – I also had the right to an answer.

White america has always been eager to accept racial profiling as long as it is against OTW.
If you are Latino, this law says any cop can stop you and force you to produce ID. Did any state attempt to pass a law that would allow a cop to stop hicks in pick-ups and check for explosives after the federal building in Oklahoma?

This is just outrageous! Did anyone else read about this today? The Catholics are out of control.
Last week, Catholic Bishop Daniel Jenky sparked national outrage when he compared President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin. In response to this indefensible statement, a large group of Notre Dame professors called for Jenky to either apologize to Obama or resign from the Catholic university’s board. As of this writing, 84 professors are listed as signatories to the letter:
“As you will be aware, the Bishop Daniel Jenky, a member of Notre Dame’s Board of Fellows, has been widely quoted for a homily in which he described President Obama as “seem[ing] intent on following a similar path” to Hitler and Stalin. Jenky’s comments demonstrate ignorance of history, insensitivity to victims of genocide and absence of judgment.
We accept that Jenky’s comments are protected by the First Amendment, but we find it profoundly offensive that a member of our beloved University’s highest authority, the Board of Fellows, should compare the president’s actions with those whose genocidal policies murdered tens of millions of people, including the specific targeting of Catholics, Jews and other minorities for their faith.
We request that you issue a statement on behalf of the University that will definitively distance Notre Dame from Jenky’s incendiary statement. Further, we feel that it would be in the best interest of Notre Dame if Jenky resigned from the University’s Board of Fellows if he is unwilling to renounce loudly and publicly this destructive analogy.”
A public petition calling for Jenky to apologize has also received nearly 14,000 signatures.
You can sign that petition here: http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2518/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=10249.

The headline I read today in my international quest for information. “Charles Taylor, Former Liberian President, Convicted Of War Crimes.”
So what is that? jUStice on a world scale. Or is this just coincidence that Taylor is the first head of state convicted by an international court since the post-World War II Nuremberg military tribunal?
Oh, yeah, and he happens to be black.

Dear Patriot,
Barack Obama and his Justice Department are spending millions of YOUR taxpayer dollars to defeat and destroy Sheriff Joe Arpaio because of his tough stance on illegal immigration.
Left-wing billionaire George Soros has joined the fray by pledging $10 million to defeat this dedicated law-enforcement officer.
Even the radical ACLU has joined the attacks against America’s Toughest Sheriff and has called defeating Sheriff Joe their “top priority.”
You and I must stand behind Sheriff Joe Arpaio and make sure this patriot is reelected!
Please make an emergency donation of $15, $20, $25, $50, $100, $250 or whatever you can afford to help reelect Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Your help is needed today to beat back Obama’s multi-million dollar campaign of lies and smears.
Why has President Obama made defeating a single Arizona county sheriff one of his top political goals of 2012?
Because Joe Arpaio is the only person standing between Barack Obama and his ultimate goal of amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.
Sheriff Joe makes no excuses for his tough stance on illegal immigration. He stands as proof that enforcing the law works. His record speaks for itself. Thanks to his dedication of enforcing immigration law, thousands of violent criminals have been kept out of your neighborhoods because Sheriff Joe stopped them at the gates.
Americans deserve great men like Sheriff Joe to defend them and their families.
Your help today can truly make a difference in his reelection.
We must act today. Sheriff Joe’s enemies will stop at nothing to defeat him.
If Joe loses this fight, it will result in amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.
You and I can’t let this happen. When my great-grandfather, John Philip Sousa, wrote Stars and Stripes Forever, he was paying tribute to the great Americans who make this nation strong… he called them the “Brave and True.” I can’t think of anyone more “brave and true” than Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Your help is desperately needed to arm voters with the truth. Your support will allow us to produce and run ads, and print and distribute literature containing the facts about how effective Sheriff Joe has been in stopping illegal immigration.
With your help, Americans for Sheriff Joe will create the most effective hard-hitting truth squad possible!
Please do what you can. America NEEDS Sheriff Joe Arpaio in office to keep fighting!
Remember, Sheriff Joe, is our last line of defense in the battle against illegal immigration.
He has been fighting on America’s behalf for over two decades, now it’s time that we fight on his behalf.
Sheriff Joe is not a politician — He doesn’t have a massive campaign operation or the resources to fight against the liberal establishment.
Joe Arpaio is simply a tough cop working to protect all Americans.
Working together we can ensure his reelection! Please make the most generous contribution you can to Americans for Sheriff Joe right now. We don’t have much time left to defend this true American hero.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:25 am
Sheriff Joe? C’om you got to be kidding us. America’s Nazi. Or the one you racists put out there to do your dirty work.

I don’t know what is worse the grandiose role Newt thinks he plays or the narcissistic preoccupation the white media has with the ignorant racist white boy.
It shows that they continue to give difference to their own race. It also shows how low the bar must be for whites to give someone the mantel of “intellect.”
