Do You Know Who Your Purchases Are Supporting?

Good morning!

I realize that in this day and age, we all need to be very conscious of the choices we make. We all need to look at what we’re eating…what’s going in these precious bodies of ours. So we read labels of the food we plan to eat. And just the other day we all got into a discourse about the toxic “ingredients” found in clothing made in China, and how it affects our health. And it doesn’t end there.

Now with the election only a few months away, we really need to be conscious of the products and services that we use that support the party that we want to support, and more importantly to not buy products and services that support the party that we don’t want to support.

Awhile ago, I found out that Lifelock supported Rush Limbaugh by continuing to advertise on his show even after all the horrible things Limbaugh said with respect to Sandra Fluke. I cancelled but they owed me money. Now that my money has been refunded, I told them exactly why I left their company.

By now you all know what side of the fence I support. Here’s a short write that I found that exposes the consumer brands that help bankroll right-wing attack ads.

A Guide To Consumer Brands Helping Bankroll Right-Wing Attack Ads

Have you eaten at White Castle recently? Or caught a movie at Regal Cinemas?

If so, you may be unwittingly helping finance right-wing attack ads.

That’s because many of the country’s most common brands are run by rich conservatives who are using their personal wealth to bankroll outside spending groups that are running attack ads smearing progressives. From Marriott Hotels to Brawny paper towels, and from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Coachella music festival, corporate executives at these organizations have given millions of dollars to groups like Mitt Romney’s Super PAC Restore Our Future.

Some corporations, like Waffle House, give direct donations to conservative attack ad groups like Karl Rove’s American Crossroads.

The following list of consumer brands either have leaders who wrote checks to outside right-wing attack ad groups or gave money directly from the corporation. Only entities that gave $25,000 or more were included in this guide.

******

Readers: I know that making choices is not always easy, but I am so grateful that we do have them. Blog me.

Ruth (The Ruth with Harris and the girls):  You have made several comments in the past few weeks, I think. And I think it was you who made a comment about Steve Harvey’s book, but I am not totally sure.  Most of the time I can tell it is you, especially if you address me. Perhaps like some of the other regulars, you can make your name unique with an added moniker? Only if you feel comfortable. As always, love seeing you here. Hugs to you, Harris and the girls.

Peace out peeps.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. 1. Human Events Says:

We all know that this campaign has been quite negative, from both sides. David Axelrod has said that President Obama has run a pretty clean, positive campaign. But as many of us know, that simply hasn’t been the case. Even in 2008, President Obama said he wouldn’t run negative ads. Looks like he isn’t heeding his own advice.

Some headlines to shape the day:

AP: Romney comes out swinging for Israel
Daily Mail: Chinese athletes under scrutiny already at Olympics
New Yorker: Paul Ryan’s influence on GOP
POLITICO: Cheney skipping convention to fish

And our stories today are below. Make sure to be on the lookout for John Gizzi’s Senate update coming up soon, and his analysis of the big races in Texas tomorrow evening.

    Have a great Monday,

    -Adam

  2. HH Says:

I was always taught not to use the word hate. That somehow that word went just enough too far for you to be able to take it back and that there were other words that could better describe your feelings. (parents were writers and it was all about words . . . all the time . .. and grammar . .. )

Sorry I digressed. But when it comes to THAT man, I can honestly say I hate him. I hate him (and Rummy) for giving us Bush on a silver platter and then manipulating him to start two wars, kills thousands of our young people, maim tens of thousands more and still rape the VA budget. I hate him for his outing of Valerie Plame.

We will never know what damage that caused. Ever. I hate him for his shenanigans on the domestic front. He is draconian about budgets and makes the TP look charitable.

All the while, he has made $100′s of millions of dollars off of the aforementioned with his “blind trust” and Halliburton stock. And he has no regret, no remorse, no reflection. He is the devil personified.

  3. Alycedale Says:

How desperate is the Right? Now they have come up with a group that says that the first documented slave in the United States was John Bunch, and he was Obama’s ancestor form his mother’s side. In other words his mother is black also.

Interesting that the white boy has to find a way to say that one of Obama’s ancestors was a slave since his father’s side has always been a free African.

Oh, and don’t miss the fact that they are saying that it came from his mother’s side so she is a “N” too.

Finally I leave it to you that the company that “found” this connection is a company owned by the Mormon Church.

    Nice, huh?

    Alycedale

  4. George, WN Says:

I always new he was a pure nigger. This proves it.
    ===================
Revealed: Obama’s white mother was ‘descended from America’s first black slave’
Ancestry.com carried out two-year project into mother’s heritage
Property and marriage records suggested his mother was descended from John Punch, who was condemned to life of slavery in 1640
He had children with white woman who passed on her free status to them and changed their name to ‘Bunch’
DNA taken from today’s white Bunch family suggests Cameroonian roots
Makes Obama 11th great-grandchild of Punch

  5. Carlos Says:

Sure George. And let me get this straight. The cruelest motherfuckers on the planet bothered to name “the first African slave.”

Only sick racists will buy that.

    Carlos

  6. Juan Says:

Sure, George. As late as the 1970s black men were being hung for just looking at a white woman wrong and we are supposed to be that a black slave could legally fuck a white woman and openly brag about it.

And her child could choose to be free and claim to be a white person.

Yeah, white pieces of shit were certainly that liberal back in a time when they could kill OTWs at will.

    Kiss this latino’s ass

    Juan

  7. Delores Says:

Jesus, how stupid do white people think we are? I live in New Orleans and it wasn’t until the late 90″s that we Creoles could choose to be white if we wanted to.

The white bastards here used to keep nazi rolls that checked everyone who wanted to claim that he/she was white to see it there were one 32nd chance of them having black blood. If they did they could not claim to be white on their LA drivers license or any legal document in the state.

And you are trying to tell us that, hey, this black man got to impregnate a white woman and be able to own land along side of white people and claim to be white.

Is there any limit racist whites won’t go to make this a white versus black presidential race?

    Delores

  8. Martha Says:

Oh, so a man enslaved for live got to have sex with a white woman and then make his children white.

Does that mean he was a slave to his children? Pathetic what a white boy believes he can convince his fellow white race to believe.

    Martha

  9. Alycedale Says:

Hello, Michelle, I’ll let you decide on a moniker. I read the article.

I have often said that the latter third of white people who make up the third that acts like the rest of the world of OTWs did so because they were not truly white. This proves my point.
    =======================
‘I consider myself Caucasian, but I find that my mixed-race roots go way back,’ Mark Bunch, who lives in Othello, Washington, told the Times.

While the mixed-race heritage of a woman deemed Caucasian may seem odd, the Times added that more and more Americans are discovering they too have ancestors from a different race.

‘It is becoming increasingly common now because people are discovering it,’ said Elizabeth Shown Mills, a former president of the American Society of Genealogists, adding the internet has helped.
‘In the past, very few records were available. Very few people made the effort to do the research.
    ==========================
Pure white people are not human beings. The Cherokee tribe were one of the firs OTWs to record that observation. When in their first encounter with the brutal beastly behavior the white beings, the Cherokee stated we the people are being attacked by creature.

They are still creatures destroying the human race from within by claiming to be human beings.

    Alycedale

  10. Yukio Says:

The Right are busy making that announcement seem more litigate as they can. On the nazi web site the headline is the claim by Ancestors.com, an affiliate of the Mormon church(just a coincidence for sure), is backed by DNA analysis. Yes the claim is the DNA of the old Mr. Punch has been discovered.
    =====================

Before the slave trade: Obama’s ancestor John Punch was condemned to a life of slavery in 1640 for escaping a home where he worked as a servant. The sentence made him America’s first slave (file picture)
‘It is becoming increasingly common now because people are discovering it,’ said Elizabeth Shown Mills, a former president of the American Society of Genealogists, adding the internet has helped.
‘In the past, very few records were available. Very few people made the effort to do the research.’
    ==================
The message is: You can really hate him now because he is all “N” masquerading as a half white man.

Too funny, if the intent wasn’t so evil.

    Yukio

  11. Elle Says:

The racists have trouble figuring out if this dude was even born an American, but they can figure out he is “related” to the first slave.

This would all be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic. It is obvious that the desperateness of the Right is showing.

    Elle

  12. Abdula in Kanata Says:

“This all sounds like political rhetoric, put out to get more votes from those that are not educated or want to know the real facts.”

Yes like the fact that Obama isn’t an American (can I laugh now). There are more facts on this planet then those spewed by the Tea Party.

Obama is American born and bred just not in Nowheresville Arkansas. The idea that Obama is not American is about as believable as the idea that there is no Global warming.

Odd how both these are anthems of the right

  13. Lana Says:

This all sounds like political rhetoric, put out to get more votes from those racists that are not educated or want to know the real facts.

    Lana

  14. Nick Says:

The US has for the longest time hung the mantle of they lead the free world around their necks.

The truth is the rest of the “Free” world treats them the same way you do an ignorant drunk at a party.

You ignore them and hope they go away, maybe someday the US will realize they share the world with a lot of other countries.

    Nick

  15. Jagavi Says:

America isn’t a democracy. Not yet. Not until they stop corporate lobbyism, eletronic vote rigging and voter suppresion laws designed to dis-enfranchise the poor, OTWs, and the elderly.

In White America The Golden Rule of democracy still applies. “He who has the gold, rules”

  16. Bintu Says:

China believes itself to be a democratically ellected government, it also has more money than the US and a larger population.

Freedom is a relative thing and is in the eye of the beholder. The only problem is Americans suffer from social myopia and can’t see beyond thier own philosophies and borders.

What definds them must define the rest of mankind. Sorry folks look a bit farther for the truth.

    Bintu

  17. 幸子 Says:

I also agree with those who say America is really no longer the leading country in the so called free world although I would rather Obama lead the free world than your white bigoted idiot, Romney.

    Sachiko

  18. Waan Says:

This is really interesting news BUT in about 15 minutes the Tea Party rightwing nuts are going to claim it is all a fraud to cover up the fact that Obama is Nigerian or Libyan or Syrian or an Alien from Mars. :-)

  19. John Says:

Got you nigger. Obama’s black father is from Kenya and his white mother is from Kansas. It has been reported repeatedly in the past that Obama’s ancestors were not slaves.

The Utah-based Ancestry.com now says a team of researchers found his mother’s mixed-race family line appears to trace back to one of the first documented
    African slaves in the U.S.

The company says Obama could be the 11th great-grandson of an African slave in colonial Virginia.

The Ancestry.com team used DNA analysis, marriage and property records to trace Obama’s maternal ancestry. The company says two years of effort hasn’t established a definitive link because of gaps in family history. The White House declined comment Monday.
    ==================
Of course the nigger would decline comment. I always knew no true white woman would lie down with a nigger.

    John

  20. Della Says:

Interesting isn’t it that when white presidents have their ancestry checked we discovered that they OWNED black slaves, but no suggestion of any black ancestry.

Only Obama’s white side were OWNED. I guess since it is well documented that his father is from Kenya and none of his relatives were brought to America as slaves the next thing to try is to go after his mother.

But wait, the research of the company was checked by a licensed researcher, someone the credentials of a member of SCOTUS, like scalia and she approved the research as accurate.

    LOL

    Della

  21. Anonymous Says:

    What a crock of Crap!

As if Ancestry.com is the definitive source of credible genealogical facts.

What next, Adolf Hitler is a direct descendant of the Zulu Tribes in Africa.

  22. SS Says:

There are few things I hate more than the jew-sponsored mythos that “all white people have a trace of African ancestry.”

    No.
    We don’t.
Our ancestors overwhelmingly found blacks disgusting.

  23. Sam Says:

So one of Obama’s distant relatives was either a white woman who got raped by a slave or some mudshark? Sounds about right.

  24. Vanamo Says:

1640 He had children with white woman.

    Doubt it.

  25. George, WN Says:

  26. Clark Says:

Give me a White nation for White people with no Jews. This wonderful internet is exposing all the damned fools and their lies.

I just hate jews the most. The slimy bastards try so hard to be white. Hitler had the right idea.

  27. Scott Says:

So, this means that Morgan Freeman was wrong. President Obama has “black” family roots from the “white” side of his family. Many Caucasian American today have African-American ancestry and they don’t know it.

A blonde haired blue eyes African American man wrote over 50 years ago: “that every year thousands of Caucasian looking Negroes crossed over and pretended to be Caucasian.” Now their descendants have no clue about their ancestry.

If you are suspicious about your ancestry take off your clothes and if you see certain parts of your body (especially between your legs) looks darker than other parts; there is a chance you have an ancestor that was of African descent.

  28. Lewis Says:

Why are we wasting our energy and thought on something that any person with common sense already knows?

It’s obvious that the majority of black Americans have traces of European blood considering that they were enslaved by us for hundreds of years.

For centuries we have had complete control to rape, kill, and torture them at will.

    Lewis

  29. Peter Says:

Every single human being on planet earth …. can trace their ancient ancestors to Africa.

  30. Saul Says:

If only this story was: Romney’s purported link to early American slave is latest twist in family tree

Wonder how the crackers would have responded? lol!!

  31. Harriet Says:

This is a crock! It is specious that people want to track him back to “black” on his mother’s side to refute his mixed race! Get over it! Of course we knew of people passing – but Kansas is as white as you get!

Not going to be drawn into discussion of black and white that Karl Rove and his cronies intend to get started. Why can’t we elect the best and move forward! Small mind discuss small matters and great minds events! Don’t get sucked in ya’ll!

  32. Laurel Says:

    Wow,

I didn’t realize they had DNA evidence from however many hunders of years ago.

Total BS, and if you go on thier site they show nothing “factual.”

  33. Linda Says:

Harriet, you may be closer than you think. This has the smell of Karl all over it. Wonder how many drinks were quaffed in sleazy bar somewhere between the capital building and the UT practice tent for those guys to dream this one up?

I think our boys in Austin are getting desperate.

  34. Tomas Says:

How convenient to find “circumstantial” evidence. I’m related to queen Elizabeth I. Or so I’ve heard Give me a break

  35. RM Says:

    Oh brother!

So white mama had slave blood in her? So it not true what the say.

Once you go black, you CAN go back.

This has all the smell of election year BS.

  36. Jane Says:

Brought to you by the Mormons who run Ancestry.com. Seriously. Mitt’s peeps. I think they thought it would be a negative in this election year, but it’s actually a positive. As long as the birthers now froth and foam for the next few months, I’d say it’s a plus for the Obama Admin.

  37. DH Says:

First Obama didn’t ask for it, Duke and Ancestry.com took it upon themselves so how you make that extrapolation is beyond logic.

Secondly what’s your real point, are you truly so utterly paranoid that reality cannot seep into that tiny little brain of yours?

You haters are an amazing group, there should be an anthropological study based of your need to reject fact in order to maintain your flawed belief system.

Hell maybe my kid can make it her doctorate
The unbelieving mind phenomena in 21st century America.

  38. Penn Says:

This seems quite a stretch. As someone who does genology, I’d question these findings as “too convienet”… and Ancestry has a few incorrect “wishful thinking” connections in it.

  39. SL Says:

Wow what a coincidence! Just before the elections it turns out Obama ancestors were the first slaves in America!. What a narrative! What a story! Amazing I tell you…just amazing!

    I call BS

  40. Anonymous Says:

ITS SO FUNNY THE RIGHT WILL LIE ABOUT ANYTHING !!

  41. PB Says:

It is certainly convenient. Based on “…a lot of context and circumstanial evidence…”. It is nearly as likely that Obama is not related to this person. One missed fork in the family tree six generations ago and one can go off the mark. It is very easy to do in geneology.

  42. Anonymous Says:

I won’t give the claim any credence until a DNA test supports the conclusion

  43. Emme Says:

Even as the daughter of a native Swede and a second-generation German, it’s entirely possible that I may have some African blood in me. And I fervently hope so!

  44. anonymous 2 Says:

Good for Obama!! This shows that someone has come from the disturbing roots of slavery and after 10 generations became the President of the United States! Go team Obama!!

This also shows the level of hatred and bigotry that embody the right winged insanity that exists in America today. This also shows that people should not use Ancestry.com.

Michelle, also note that there are a myriad of products that not only support the right winged agenda, but also test on animals. 45. Dwight Says:

You of the Right need to get out more. Watch something other than FOX news. If its corruption you want look to the last administration. But you can’t know that since you watch fair and balanced TV.

  46. JA Says:

God, it’s really going to screw everything up if Romney’s DNA is linked to slaves, and what if Obama is somehow linked to a long-dead Morman? Holy Potomac Park, Robin!

  47. SO Says:

Hahahaha, still laughing! The implications of this research go way beyond the argument of whether it’s true or not.

  48. Emily Says:

Credible or not, the research reveals one crucial detail that will make the racists’ heads explode and shatter!

It’s this – There were many African families that intermarried or intermingled with white families, and some were able to ‘pass for white’.

Imagine how many thousands (maybe millions?) of white people who thought they were ‘pure’ are now suddenly panicking, wondering if Gramma Matilda or Great-Grampa Frank had some African blood in them!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Don’t you just love irony?

  49. Anonymous Says:

Hahahaha, still laughing! The implications of this research go way beyond the argument of whether it’s true or not.

  50. Jim Says:

Oh, no. EVERYBODY in Wichita is a descendent of slaves!

But, rest assured, Dodge City is still pure.

  51. Anonymous Says:

But just think… Had there been no slaves, there would be no Obama…ROTFL LMAO!!!!!

  52. Jim Says:

Had there been no Mormons, Romney would be shutting down steel mills in northern England.

  53. SD Says:

It will be interesting to see how the racists weigh in on this.

  54. Anonymous Says:

What? 1600′s Virginia? But Obama’s NOT one of US!!! He’s a foreigner, a commie, a muzzz-lim, blah blah blah blah blah….. Tea Party heads will explode over this latest news….

  55. JIm Says:

Or they won’t. Watch them turn this into another conspiracy and somehow link it to the BC.

  56. Vincent Says:

Mitt tells us that our Anglo-Saxon cousins are superior to the rest of us, but wait, he was in Israel and the new story is that our Jewish cousins are superior to the rest of us…..oh my, he is on his way to Poland. I have trouble keeping up with which part of the family is superior at a given time.

  57. GD Says:

That’s true. Who cares? Nothing to be proud of and for those researching our DNA like the program with William Gates, it’s like people will be so happy to know they had white ancestors, even if it were through rape.

This should be a disgrace, knowing how a lot of blacks came about instead of a celebration for some. The whites would not want anyone to know they have black relatives, not because of the rapes but just because they want no part of blacks being connected to them.

  58. BB Says:

Who cares…more propaganda. This will not change what is to come, so come up with something else. For those of us who know what time is it, these stories are tired and stale.

And, yes it was called rape back then. There was no such thing as any “relations” between blacks and whites at that time other than rape or murder, which still exists today in various forms.

Moreover, it is even worse today. At least black people knew where they stood and respected self during that time. Today, blacks love their oppressor and hate themselves.

Assimilation and integration is nothing more than genocide to the black race. Willie Lynch deserves props for his crafty and strategic plan. 400 years and still running.

  59. Brad Says:

The first slaves on this earth was the jews but nobody has ever cared about that they worked harder than ny other slaves in this world.

And from the 1600′s to the 1800′s there wee white slaves but you nobody was ever taught about the jews are the white slaves we were only taught about the black slaves.

Blacks were the last slaves. Before them were the white slaves and before the whites were the jews. You sure can look it up on line if you don’t believe me.

I think we should be taught about all the slaves not just one and the ones who suffered the most out of the slaves were the jews.

Mexicans are not slaves like someoe said they had and have a choice to work for the pay they got. They didn’t have to work for that pay they could say no it was and is their choice they were not beaten and handcuffed like the slaves were.

All three slaves the jews, whites and blacks were treated very commonly. They were stolen, cuffed, and beaten.

I have researched all this years ago so that is how I know and if you google all three of them you will see that blacks were not the only slaves and were not the first ones either.

  60. BD Says:

Slavery was going on way before the Jews were ever thought about. There are countries in the world still where slavery is practiced.

  61. Anonymous Says:

The true jews are black. Are you referring to the white population (caucasians) who practice the “jewISH” religion.

If so, there is no need to talk about them because they are well taken care of and received their due. In fact, the real jews are still being slaughtered today and they are not pale people.

  62. Clarke Says:

Anonymous #61, You folks can be silly as hell. “The true jews are black” Child who told you that lie. The people in Canaan, Israel, Judah, Palestine weren’t even called jews until the land was conquered by the Romans who renamed the land Judea.

They were Hebrews, then Israelites. GET IT RIGHT.

  63. Tiffany Says:

Well I’m a african american woman and guess what that’s how I got to be American my ancestors were slave owners. We are originated from africa sold as slaves.

We were raped by our slave owners and there you go. I am called an african american today. Back in those days if you had a little black in you you were consider black.

So don’t try an take what Obama is made of and twist it. He is and always will be african american. And just to let you know no one is pure we are all mixed.

So those of you who don’t like it, thank your ancestors for raping our ancestors. It is what it is.

  64. Beverly Says:

And one thing that still confuses me since our President was elected is how everyone forgets he is also white. His mother was white, his maternal grandparents were white. Why is only his blackness an issue? I don’t understand it.

People who say “Yes!! We finally have a black President” and “finally, our time has come”…etc. are the ones keeping racism alive.

The fact that Mr Obama avoided the race issue as much as possible during his campaign said volumes…he is neither all black, nor all white…He is an American….period.

And I voted for him, because by the end of the campaign, I beleived he was the best man for the job…and since he took over office, I’m even more sure of it.

I don’t consider President Obama an african american…nor a caucasion american….just an american.

I feel sorry for those of you who have a problem with that, but I refuse to see the “colored” side of him, white or black.

Also, slavery is a part of America’s history, all be it a shameful part, but that is what it is…history. And my ancestors did not rape your ancestors…sorry to disappoint you in your anger, but my relatives came over from another country as well, and were just poor dirt farmers trying to make a living off the land.

I’ve traced my family heritage back to the late 1600′s right before they came to America and found no proof of slave ownership. So, in your generalization of all “white” people, you have insulted me.

    Beverly

  65. Norm Says:

This is a lie and i can prove it. i have worked at the LOC for 15 yrs and i know that this is a lie. However, it is true of John Mccain ..Barak is an African american because under US law if u have 1/8 black blood that makes you a descendant of Africans.

In Baraks case he has an African father whose genes are stronger thatn his mothers which is why he looks like an african american in color and demeanor..(he is no wimp).

We also know that Baraks dad had 4 wives and that one (Baraks real bio mom) came to amerikkka with him gave birth to Barak before she died and he later married the white woman from Kansas who raised him.

The trouble the adopted white mother had was that she refused to let go..Baraks father was a traditional muslim with 4 wives and she could not handle it..i believe she was suffering from JUNGLE FEVER..(lust for African men)

  66. Kelly Says:

If we can elect a complete imbecile who is controlled by others like a glove puppet to the white house then surely we can also elect an Ape?

It shows the world just how democratic we are here in the states that imbeciles and apes can be elected to high office and not just rich, well connected folks.

  67. Lucy Says:

I just heard about TJ Holmes former CNN anchor being stopped by Atlanta police. He was stopped because the officer wanted to know if he had insurance on his car.

That is not a legal stop.

When a black man reports this, white men will immediately attempt to shut him up by accusing him of “playing the race card.” Now you let that same piece of shit feel that he is the victim of not being able to buy a big automatic gun. Does he want to listen to being called out on playing the 2nd Amendment call.

These pussies could take the abuse black men have come to take for granted by white police men out to prove they are the boss.

The second thing the white boy advices is to shut up and show your insurance papers. They can say that with ease because they know that they will never have to experience that type of indignation.

Hypocrisy comes easy to the tiny penis.

    Lucy

  68. EH Says:

It’s the law enforcement version of CNN’s headline-hunting. ACA wasn’t overturned, and he wasn’t a criminal. No harm, no foul, just a little irrational exuberance.

  69. Joan Says:

I am a white woman who has experienced the frustration and anger a black man experiences when a cop makes one of those insulting harassing stops.

I am glad Mr. Holmes tweeted that and I hope it is followed by an apology from the police. Many black men who don’t have the influence or ability to pay for lawyers that he has experience that hateful practice every day.

Being pulled over to make sure you have insurance is complete and utter Bullshit. We need more accountability when it comes to the police. Again, glad he documented the experience.

How understanding it is for whites to want another to accept treatment they don’t have to experience.

    Joan

  70. Roy Says:

Fuck you EH. No harm, no foul
State-sponsored intimidation against non-white people is “no harm”?

  71. Mort Says:

In light of how the NYPD deals with their overtly racist stop & frisk policies, I’d put better odds on “doubling down on racial profiling while avoiding using the words ‘racial profiling’” than the odds I’d give an apology.

  72. CD Says:

I dont see why anyone is surprised at him being pulled over for DWB … especially in the south.

  73. BT Says:

Is anyone surprised that there is an “Is anyone surprised?” comment in this story? I’m going to presume you are surprised, but really, who would be surprised by such a thing on the internet? Not me. I’m not the sort of person who surprises easily.

  74. Mark Says:

“Why was I pulled over officer?”
“Oh, we have a trouble maker here.”

  75. Paul Says:

Fortunately it happened to a high profile, well-connected black man this time, rather than the usual poor black youth. At least he’ll be able to follow up and call the cops out on their racial profiling.

As he tweeted, he’s far from the only person this happens to. And an inconvenient traffic stop is far from the worst fate that targets of racial profiling meet.

I hope he doesn’t flinch when the racist spring the “You’re just playing the race card.”

    Sick motherfuckers.

    Paul

  76. RV Says:

If the cops really had the nerve, they could have charged him for using his cell phone while he was behind the wheel of his car (and pretend that they pulled him over for suspected texting while driving).

  77. EB Says:

Minor correction: Prince George’s county is in Maryland. Prince William County is in VA (I’ve had family in PW for most of my life).

To the greater point: the fact that this happens seems like a great example of the institutionalization of racism, where it’s the institutions of society which propagate the oppression, where getting “enlightened” individuals in the institutions isn’t sufficient, the institutions themselves need reform to ensure that they break that cycle.

  78. MJ Says:

I once got stopped by a police officer while walking to work. He said he was trying to get to know the neighborhood…I wouldn’t consider Portland, Oregon a “neighborhood.”

He stopped me again a month later on the same route to work. I immediately recognized him and said “Hey, I remember you. You stopped me not long ago, you were introducing yourself to the neighborhood…remember me?” He turned and ran back to his car. Fucking pricks!

  79. GG Says:

MJ, Wait, what? What do you mean he ‘stopped’ you? Did he want to chat? Did you get frisked? Did he ask if you had anything in your pockets? Your story literally makes no sense – and that goes double for your saying he ‘ran’ back to his car (I’ve seen cops run for only one reason, and that’s not because they’re afraid of a guy they had a casual chat with a month ago)

So no, I’m not getting what the point of your story is. The fact is, the more beat cops that are actually WALKING on the street, talking to people, getting to know residents, business owners, etc. the better it is for everyone involved.

And for fuck’s sake, are you literally standing there saying there aren’t ‘neighborhoods’ in Portland?

  80. Anonz Says:

Zen, thanks for sending me your best wishes. I feel the sincerity of your concern.

Scalia is fuming with the NRA because they have dissed his son. He is also pissed that they did not pick up his book by purchasing the 500,000 and using them as a bonus to those who re-up or take a new subscription to a NRA membership.

In addition his son, the lawyer, has fell out of “favorite son” status with the NRA. That means the firm he works for is losing business. Scalia has shown in the pass that he is not patient with those that short change his son.

Hence, Scalia is playing the blackmail card via he could see a limited 2nd Amendment Clause. He is making the rounds with news media telling them that he sees the possibility of limiting the gun rights of citizens based on the arguments he is presented.

You see the blackmail here? I like it. I think the NRA will fall in line and pay up. Then you will see the BAPF Scalia double down on the absoluteness of the 2nd Amendment as he did for us on the Citizens United issue.

    The 1% love the greedy.

    Anonz

  81. MJ Says:

GG, okay I’ll be more specific.
    ————————-

I’m walking to work through a parking lot (Beaverton, Oregon: Fred Meyers on Hillsdale Hwy). Local police officer pulls into the lot and parks about 100 feet from me. Gets out and calls to me and asks what I was doing.

I say “I’m walking to work, is there a problem?”
Cop: I’m just getting to know the people around the neighborhood.

Me: Ok…I just moved here about 6 months ago, I’m from Miami.” I hand him my ID.

He looks at my ID and asks me where I work. I proceed to show him my (Pizzicato Uniform) and say “just one block away from here. The pizza shop on the corner.”
Cop: Really? Never heard of it.

    Me: Ok…
Cop: All right man, here you go. Have a nice day. (Hand me back the ID, turns and jumps in his car)
    Me: That’s it?

    ONE MONTH LATER:
Walking to work same route except this time I’m on the other side of the street. Police vehicle passes me and pulls into a gas station just a few hundred feet in front of me. I’m already thinking, “great, these cops are really friendly around here.”

    SARCASM!!
Same officer gets out his car and I immediately recognize him. This time I’m trying to get a look a his name tag as I say “Hey man, what’s up? Remember me? I just moved here from florida.”

He says “I stopped you before?” Turns his head to the side to get a better a look at me. quickly turns back to his car and speeds off.

Both times he was in his cruiser. There are a ton of different neighborhoods in Portland, show me one cop that knows every person in their districts/hood. For fucks sake are you serious?

That guy wasn’t looking for friend. He was looking for somebodies outstanding warrant or nickel bag. Are you that fucking naive, do you honestly think cops aren’t corrupt?

They don’t try to bend the system every once in while.
I’d have to be a fool to think that cop was trying to be my friend.

  82. David Says:

The same conniving white sons of bitches who say blacks are playing the race card when cops(black or white) harass black men behind the wheel and they complain about it are the people who are behind the voter ID laws to prevent millions of eligible voters from voting.

They know that the average white person is just too dumb to object.

    David

  83. RV Says:

MJ, You’d also have to be a fool to be friends with a cop.

  84. Charlotte Says:

In PA they can just call that in – even if you’re out of state.
As long as you are black, they will do whatever they can to fuck with you.

I didn’t know that until my eldest’s boyfriend got pulled over near Gettysburg (with MD tags) because the cop called in and found out his insurance had expired. Driving while black is still a problem.

  85. JB Says:

Not “playing”, Joe. It’s for real. I had a young black patient in L.A. who attended a college in the Florida panhandle. His parents were quite well-to-do as was his Georgia grandmother so he drove a rather nice set of wheels.

EVERY time he drove to Georgia to see his grandmother, he was stopped by Georgia police or the highway patrol.

  86. Mable Says:

To the next white boy who says its no big deal, joe, when was the last time you were pulled over just to make sure you had insurance? i’m guessing never.

    Mable

  87. Kathleen Says:

Yeah, you racist bastards, it IS what liberals do, cause we don’t have a deck of stupid, racist asshole cards. . . We only have that one “racist card” you gave us so you could keep the other 51.

Have a GREAT day until the OTWs catch up.

    Kathleen

  88. Anna of Guam Says:

My husband worked with a young man–a truck driver–who bought himself a new fast Pontiac a few years ago. He recently saw his friend in a mall parking lot. The car looked new still.

Friend said he could only drive it when his family was with him, because if he ventured out alone, police stopped him every time. Yes, it happens in Little Rock.

  89. Doug Says:

I drive Cantrell Road on my commute both ways each day.

    EVERYBODY just flies!

50 is more common than 40 and the posted limit is 35.

As I pass the stragglers going below 40 it is one of 3 classes of people. Cell phone/texters, old ladies, or black guys.

The cell phoners hack me off, the old ladies I just smile since my momma ended up going really slow before she handed in her license.

But then the black guys make me sad because i sure as hell can’t blame them for going exactly 35. I would hate to have to figure extra time for “insurance checks” into my commute time estimate.

Denying it occurs points to lying to oneself, or lying to everyone else.

    Doug

  90. Anonymous Says:

And we who are white wonder why those who are not white don’t trust or respect us very much!!!

  91. Maxwell Says:

Bad as DWB is, it could have been worse… he could have been driving while poor or poor and black. Unemployment, even much basic employment, doesn’t cover enough to keep most legally insured while searching/driving to a job.

The American police/prison state is nothing but an enforcement/collection arm of corporate America these days. Insurance and drugs are of course the main $ provocations police have.

There is no justice… and this sure ain’t about public safety or security for the 99 percent.

  92. Ted Says:

I’ve had eyes for going on 57 years. I don’t need to see police reports or incident logs, I see who gets pulled over in Fort Baptist and it sure ain’t old white men like me….I’ve become invisible to the police, damn it feels good too!

There’s also a lot of Driving While Hispanic going on too. Pick On The Poor, Pick On The Weak, Pick On The Different has been going on for centuries and I don’t know a cure except for these people who are often stopped for Driving While…unless they can morph themselves into old white people.

You have to be mean to be a cop, you just have to be and being a cop just makes you meaner, it just must. Mean people have less regard for others and when you’re really an “other” heaven help ya.

Having Obama in the White House, even if it’s just for one term will help this Driving While…situation in the decades to come but the idea of a non-white in the White House is just too new at the moment to help people like T.J. Holmes much less those “others” who are poor and driving rattletraps.

In the mean mean time, by all means have all yer papers at the ready at all times, drive the speed limit, train yourself to be church type respectful when stopped and maybe just maybe you can avoid your own Rodney King moment.

I apologize in advance for the bad things that will happen to you no matter what you do. It’s that America is exceptional, don’t you know. Yes…..we are very exceptional.

  93. CB-1 Says:

Ok I have not looked this up – but – in the South don’t blacks commit a very large portion of crime?

I am not for pulling someone over because of their skin color, but if you are a cop and the vast majority of your criminals are black what are you to do? There has to be some street level discretion.

    Throw me a bone!

  94. Zen Lill Says:

For all you racists out there, this is for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bWlTZZN3DY and it should shake you to your core.

Anonz, I knew you’d be here today, I walked the cliff in Palos Verdes and asked the universe for the gift of your presence, I can’t explain why (not today, not here), but thank you. I’ll have to read up on Scalia’s son, I’m not familiar with that story.

    Luv, Zen Lill

  95. Dave Says:

Okay CB-1 here’s your fucking bone. You wait until they actually COMMIT A CRIME, instead of pulling people because they MIGHT have committed a crime.

    Jeez louise.

  96. Oliver Says:

I’m guessing Cb-1 thinks cops are precogs like in a Philip K. Dick novel. Here’s the deal, CB-1l. Dick wrote science fiction!

  97. ES Says:

You need a bone CB-1? How about this? A policeman shouldn’t pull someone over simply because they are curious about someones insurance.

Probable cause used to mean more than an open excuse to presume guilt, search, loot, oppress. At least it did for some… that’s true for very very few now of any color… and even then it’s largely after the fact… with/depending on money.

  98. CB-1 Says:

I sometimes wish I was a Liberal – what a nice little pretend fantasy world. NOT! I don’t blame the cop at all.

Now back to the coffee shop with all of you bed wetting liberals. Go find a way to blame this on Nixon, Reagon, or Bush…..or better yet find a way to make it a conspiracy of all three – ewww – the plot thickens.

    LMFAO at all of you……

  99. Oliver Says:

What does LMFAO mean? I’m guessing “laughing my fat ass off”. Happy to entertain you. (Lizard brains are so easy to amuse.)

  100. Ira Says:

The police officer is black, is this still racism?

  101. Sofia Says:

    Ira, Yes.

  102. CB-1 Says:

Oh yeah Oliver – I am slim and trim and ready to take down liberals in one chop. Hieyawww! Ring the bell school’s back in session for you outlyer – perhaps you need a course in Urban Community Challenges.

Go find a college my friend.

  103. SP Says:

I’m guessing Coolbreeze is 17? More mouth than brains.

  104. Fatima Says:

An anecdotal observation, but one thing I’ve noticed driving through the South is the sheer number of police on the road.

Not sure how anyone commits a crime with seemingly so many cops out and about. The deeper the South, the greater the count.

The darker the local population, the more checkpoints. The lighter the population, the more patrols.

  105. Sky Says:

That’s interesting, SP; you put CB-1 at about 5 years above my estimate.

  106. Lisa Says:

Being pulled over to check for their car insurance?? That ever happen except to coolbreeze who was probably driving when he was 8 (day before yesterday)?

In most places, insurance, registration, and seatbelts are secondary or tertiary offenses to whatever the real reason is (usually speeding, following too close, or changing lanes without signaling).

Pulling over a TV host is probably not real smart unless it is Limbaugh and you catch him with his drug cache.

  107. Vp Says:

The cop appears to be a black female. Any possibility that she was stopping him to get his phone number?

  108. Rufus Says:

    50 is the new 40!

So 17 is the new 7.

    ‘Bout right.

  109. June Says:

Zen Lill, Thank you for the link. I cried after looking at it.

    June

  110. Theodora Says:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) struck back at former Vice President Dick Cheney for calling his choice of 2008 running mate Sarah Palin a “mistake,” and brought up their famous disagreement over torture during the Bush administration.

“I’m always glad to get comments four years later. Look, I respect the vice president,” McCain said on “Fox & Friends” Monday. “He and I had strong disagreements as to whether we should torture people or not. I don’t think we should have.”
    ========================

Given that McCain is saying openly that the US tortured people, one wonders why Obama has refused to prosecute anybody for it… although he has prosecuted whistleblowers who made it public.

  111. Gloria Says:

Theodora, in that article Liz Cheney calls her dad the best VP ever. What about all the VPs who went on to become president and contributed far more to our country than Cheney?

    Gloria

  112. CJ Says:

Liz Cheney can respect her father but if she thinks that Palin, who said that we should support our friends in North Korea is better than Obama. Hmmm…. that’s wacked!

  113. RP Says:

I’m sorry but I truely don’t understand what republicans see in Sarah Palin. I equate Palin to Kim Kardashian, both are air heads that need the spotlight constantly shinning of them while offering absolutely nothing to help move this country forward.

  114. Theodora Says:

Wait a minute, Gloria. You did notice that it was Liz Cheney making the statement, right? Since when has Liz made any comment that a rational person could agree with?

    Theodora

  115. Laura Says:

Hey, McCain that’s what you get when you select an ignorant person to be at your side. Then again, you have to have enough sense to know that person is an idiot.

So, I guess that’s why you are defending her. But you are correct, if it or the state of the Country really mattered to Cheney, he would have voiced his concerns when it mattered.

That Cheney would have been when it was a possibility that the electorate might have elected her to the office of Vice President of the USA.

That makes you the “best VP ever” according to another air head Liz Cheney, but a gottdamn hypocrite in my view.

    Laura

  116. Anonymous Says:

must be tough for jackals to defend each other….they need to move to another country.

  117. EE Says:

Meh! It’s all politics as usual. Today I am going to sit in front of City Hall here in Manhattan and eat a humogous pastrami sammich with mustard and kraut, a side of chopped chicken livers with onions, and bring my own big thermos of soda to aggravate Mike Bloomberg. (relax, I don’t do it all the time, sometimes I have a well marbled prime rib with fries…)
