GOP Continues to Block Violence Against Women Act

Good morning!

Yesterday was the 18th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and not deviating from their usual, the GOP continue to do what they do when it comes to controlling women,  and trying to destroy and defy anything that is in support of women.

Here is the write - Short but not so sweet.

Happy 18th Birthday, VAWA!

GOP Continues to Block Violence Against Women Act

Today is the 18th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, a law originally drafted by then-Sen. Joe Biden and signed by President Bill Clinton back in 1994.ThinkProgress’ Annie-Rose Strasser rounds up the law’s many successes:

  • Victims can call for help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline was established as part of VAWA. It currently serves over 22,000 victims a month and has taken a total of 3 million calls.
  • Law enforcement officers are trained to help victims.500,000 law enforcement officials, judges, and prosecutors a year are trained with VAWA funding to help domestic abuse victims.
  • Partner violence and homicides fell. From the year before VAWA’s passage until 2008, the number of women being killed by partners dropped 43 percent, and partner violence against women fell 53 percent.
  • Stalking became illegal. Before VAWA, stalking was not a federal crime. The law established stalking as a felony offense.
  • Rape is rape, no exceptions. Since the passage of VAWA, each state in the United States has updated its laws so that rape by a partner is treated equally to rape by a stranger.

Unfortunately, the law is a year past due for reauthorization and Republicans in the House of Representatives continue to hold it hostage. This stands in marked contrast to every single other reauthorization, each of which sailed through Congress.

The Senate passed a modernized version of the law that expanded protects for LGBT people, immigrants, and Native Americans by an overwhelming, bipartisan 68-31 margin. Rather than even take up that bill, the House instead passed a partisan bill that excludes important protections for the aforementioned groups and other improvements to landmark law.

BOTTOM LINE: There’s no excuse for House Republicans to keep holding up a law that has successfully protected women for nearly two decades.

Readers: Again, no woman in her right mind would vote for this party.

Hello Anonymous: Welcome back. A similar story to yours with respect to your eating habits, was posted on my blog a few years ago. Not sure if that was your group or not. All I can say, is feel free to love every inch of my body…dine on me and lick off all of that bad bacteria. And if I’m attacked by anything worse that could harm me, go ahead and dive into that feast as well. This could be a very beneficial relationship for the both of us. Happy dining! :)

Zen Lill:  I was wondering too why you were not here lately, and now I know why. I am so sorry and sad to read your comment. I’m happy you are there to console your friend and daughter, and I HOPE that you are taking care of yourself as well, as I am sure this is quite difficult for you too.  I send love and good healing thoughts to you, Lily, your friend, and all concerned.

And yes, thanks for the holiday wishes – I am so enjoying myself. I think this picture pretty much says it all. :)

No time for more and the internet is running super slow where I am. Blog me.

Peace & Love… go live it and go give it.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Hmmm, maybe we have a case of less women in their ‘right mind’? That thought is just plain scary…

Just wanted to say, #46, Kimberly, you’re so right, southern baptists are the worst, they would hit their wives and justify it.

…and listen I don’t care how ‘defiant’ or ‘discussion adverse’ your wife is…man up and handle it with words, anyone can be reached using the right approach. I counsel this type of stuff a lot, when their faces, male or female, start to soften when they speak about their sig other (and eventually they run out of resistance/pissed off steam) that’s when I say, stay right there when you say what you want to say, bc I will tell you, if you wnat someone to listen and understand you, there can be no anger/control/obedience/’do it my way or get out’ underlying intention or you will fail to get through and have things closer to how you wish them to be.

    #47 Akbar, I don’t blame you.

    #48 Morales, too true.

Social butterfly, Janice, Roger, RobertRt, and Mischa thank you for the kind words, it is much appreciated. I’m pleased that my friend is facing her first day off sedatives and talking, her hubby has been showing me videos and we’ve laughed bc this kid was funny and we’ve cried together. I’m feeling more focused today…was completely discombobulated for a week. So, again, thank you…this place is always a nice haven to return to.

I have to ask, do the Christian women actually believe they deserve to be beaten for not obeying their man? We have not come a long way, baby, if so…that’s just crazy and frankly, it’s flawed thinking and women behaving as if their a child to be chastised into ‘behaving’ is ludicrous.

I guess the firebrand is back : )

    Luv, Zen Lill

  2. Zen Lill Says:

I don’t like poor grammar so I meant to say ‘behaving as if they are (they’re) a child…’ : )

PS after days of many comments, I’m suddenly alone here? That’s just strange.

  3. Jonah Says:

You are a beautiful woman. If only I had a beach.

  4. Wanda Says:

Virginia governor and attorney general force the health board in the state to outlaw all abortion clinics.

So Governor UltraSound is at it again. What do you expect when dumb as a box of rocks white women keep electing these insane men.

  5. Ida Says:

    RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
The Virginia Board of Health voted 13-2 in favor of new regulations on abortion clinics.

The vote removed the “grandfather clause,” which exempted existing abortion clinics from complying with standards for new hospital construction.

Abortion rights proponents say the regulations are politically motivated, unnecessary and could force some clinics to close.

ProgressVA condemned the decision saying it was “prioritizing politics over evidence-based medicine.”

“This Board should be ashamed that they have ignored and shut out the voices of Virginians and the advice of countless medical and legal professionals,” said ProgressVA Executive Director Anna Scholl.

“It is simply disgraceful that the Board would bow to right-wing bullying and shut down women’s access to comprehensive reproductive care and safe and legal abortion in order to cater to a politician who has proven time and again that he will twist the law to suit his own agenda.”

Pro-life groups applauded the decision, saying it would provide better protection for patients and standardize women’s health care.

“An industry that has such widespread failure to protect the health of women should have no say in how it is regulated,” said Victoria Cobb, president of The Family Foundation. “Virginia’s women are better off after today’s vote.”

The outcome brought board member, James Edmondson Jr., to tears.

    ” Access matters,” he said.

The chair of the board, Bruce Edwards, explained why he believes Friday’s the outcome is different than the outcome in June — when the board voted for the “grandfather clause.”

” The board members studied -up on it. They sought more information because they were bombarded early on,” Edwards said.

The approved regulations will go to the attorney general’s office to be certified. Then, to the governor’s desk.

Once everything is finalized abortion clinics will have 2 years to comply with the new regulations.

Hundreds of protesters on both sides showed up at the Board of Health’s hearing Friday.

  6. Henry Says:

This “place” is a better place because of you, Zen Lill. If anyone can help parents in that situation, it is you.

  7. Cambel Says:

Another example of how the GOP doesn’t care about jobs or the economy. Just controlling women like the Clerics in Saudi Arabia.

  8. Demi Says:

In November, Virginia will be solid Blue!!!
    Obama 2012! Because it isn’t 1050 anymore.

  9. Cordelia Says:

See…now that he’s not in the running as the VEEP he can get back to his passion…VAGINAL PROBING – because that’s what the people of VA elected him to do…right?

    Governor Vaginal Probe McDonald had a thought – E I E I O

  10. Gail Says:

Politicians take an oath to serve the people, not an oath to serve their religious beliefs. Any politician that can’t separate their duties to the people they serve from their duties to their own religion should not be allowed to hold a political office.

They should be stripped of their political office immediately, forfeit their pensions, lose any taxpayer paid health care benefits, and barred from holding any public office again.

I think we need to start suing these politicians. Let them defend themselves against a lawsuit out of their own pockets and maybe they’ll finally get the idea.

If they have such strong religious convictions, then they should serve in their own churches.

  11. Toni Says:

Governor Vaginal Prober regrouping and striking again against woman’s health issues; playing doctor and god at the same time. Women, get the vote out. Vote Republicans out.

  12. ED Says:

My initial reaction to Romney’s response is that it wasn’t the worst that it could have been, but it definitely did not show any sort of “pulling together for the good of the country”.

Republicans/conservatives have been, pretty much from day one, screaming about how bad this President is, how he is ruining the country and taking us into Muslim socialism (whatever that might be).

I mean, the country *is* in pretty bad shape, but instead of trying to work with the President we see vote after vote along party lines.

Issue after issue, whether it is economic or the killing of Ambassador Stevens, the Republicans just seem to want to make things worse.

  13. Zen Lill Says:

Henry, thank you for saying that, that’s very sweet.

Gail, that’s a perfect solution, go work within your congregations if your religious beliefs are so strong. Agreed!
