Paul Gaylord Recovering From Rare Case Of Plague (PHOTOS)

Paul Gaylord

This photo supplied by the Gaylord family taken July 11, 2012, at a hospital in Bend, Ore., shows the blackened hand of Paul Gaylord as he recovers from the plague. Gaylord contracted the disease when he tried to pull a mouse out of the mouth of his cat, Charlie, because it was choking on the rodent.

PORTLAND, Ore. — One look at Paul Gaylord’s hands shows why the plague is referred to as “Black Death.”

The welder’s once-strong hands have been withered by the cell-killing infection and darkened to the color of charcoal. Doctors are waiting to see if they can save a portion of his fingers, but the outlook is grim for the man who needs them for his livelihood.

“I don’t think I can do my job,” Gaylord said in a phone interview from a Bend, Ore., hospital. “I’m going to lose all my fingers on both hands. I don’t know about my thumbs. The toes – I might lose all them, too.”

Gaylord, who turns 60 next month, contracted a rare case of the plague trying to take a mouse from the jaws of a choking cat at his home in Prineville, in rural Oregon.

He faces a difficult recovery now that he’s out of intensive care. His family is trying to raise money to get him into a new house, because the manufactured home he was living in has a leaky roof, a moldy bathroom and mice – dangerous living conditions for a man with a weakened immune system.

“We didn’t even know the plague was around anymore,” said his sister, Diana Gaylord. “We thought that was an ancient, ancient disease.”

The bacterium that causes the plague is carried by fleas, which can infect people and animals. The disease that killed millions in the Middle Ages is extremely rare in current times – an average of seven cases occur in the U.S. each year.

Gaylord’s illness began after he saw a stray cat – who he’d named Charlie – with a dead mouse jammed in the back of his throat. The cat appeared to be choking, so Gaylord and a friend attempted to dislodge the mouse.

The distressed cat bit his hand. Unable to remove the mouse, Gaylord shot Charlie to end his suffering and buried him in the yard.

Two days later, he awoke with a fever and chills.

An Army veteran who rarely visits a doctor, Gaylord felt sick enough to go to the Veterans Administration outpatient clinic in nearby Bend. But the clinic had so many patients that doctors couldn’t see him for more than a week.

The next day, Gaylord, who doesn’t have private health insurance, went to an urgent care clinic. The doctor diagnosed cat scratch fever, provided him with medicine and told him to return if his condition worsened.

He was back a few days later. Diana Gaylord said her brother dripped with sweat and his lymph nodes swelled.

“He had a lump under his arm swollen almost as big as a lemon,” she said.

A doctor at the urgent care clinic sent him in an ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Redmond. There, a doctor diagnosed the plague, and Gaylord was taken to a larger hospital in Bend.

Gaylord spent nearly a month on life support and only recently left the intensive care unit. At one point, doctors thought he was going to die, said Debbie Gaylord, his wife.

A hospital chaplain baptized the unconscious patient and Gaylord’s son, Jake, arrived from Austin, Texas, to say goodbye.

Hours later, doctors told his family that he had improved.

“Jake got here and all of sudden the next morning he started getting better,” said Andrea Gibb, Gaylord’s niece. “The doctors were like kids in a candy store. They were so excited.”

Gaylord’s case is Oregon’s fifth since 1995. None has been fatal.

The cat’s body was dug up, and tests confirmed it had the plague. Other cats and dogs in the area were tested and none had the disease, said Karen Yeargain of the Crook County Health Department.

Several of Gaylord’s relatives were given preventive antibiotics and will have blood drawn for further tests.

Gaylord is slowly getting better. He is now able to take strolls through the hospital with the aid of a walker, and the family hopes he can return home by October.

The family intends to build a small house on the spot where the manufactured home now stands, using donations.

Debbie Gaylord said she and her husband have never been churchgoing types, but that might change when he comes home.

“We do our praying the way we do it. But now, I don’t know. We might have to rethink the church,” she said.

  2. HOWIE Says:

    Michelle:

I always associated the ‘Black Death’ or Bubonic Plague with the swelling of the Lymph Glands, which turned black and then erupted, further spreading the disease throughout the body‘s lymph glands beginning on the neck and under-arms and groin, hence the name “the Black Plague.” or “Black Death.”

The Plague originally came from fleas which hitched a ride on rats which came ashore from ships in port.

There was a quarantine on all ships in port all over Europe to prevent the spread which wiped out 1/3 to 1/2 of many European countries.

I have never seen black hands or appendages associated with the Plague. I did some Googling and found out that Gangrene of the extremities such as toes, fingers, lips and tip of the nose does occur as a secondary infection. Once again I learned something from your blog, Michelle.

In modern times there are only about 6 cases reported in the United States yearly and it can be cured with antibiotics since it is caused by a bacterium.

I am not sure now if it was called the “Black Death” because of the black pustules erupting throughout the lymph nodes of the body, or the Gangrene turning affected areas black.

Glad to see you back Howie. My three boys call everyday with something you have said about aliens. They can’t get enough.

I tell them that when they return home from their military assignments they will have to get their own secretary.

But I must thank you for keeping my boys calling me.

10-year-old gives birth to baby boy
    CHRISTINA BOYLE
    Thursday, November 10, 2011
A 10-year-old Mexican girl has given birth to a baby boy after a 31-week pregnancy, according to reports.

The premature infant, which weighed 3.3 pounds, was born by Caesarian section at the Women’s Hospital in the city of Puebla and is in the intensive care unit recovering from pneumonia.

The young mother, who is from the nearby San Francisco Totimehuacan community, has returned home after the procedure but visits the baby every day to breastfeed, officials said.

The Puebla state Attorney General’s Office is now investigating whether the girl could have been raped and who the father is, the hospital’s director Rogelio Gonzalez said, according to UpFrontNewswire.

The republicans will be forcing babies raped by grown men to have babies. NO EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE, or INCEST, is the republican policy.

  8. Health Info Says:

Are You a Low Talker? Easy Ways to Be Heard

Do people often ask you to speak up? Use these simple techniques to make sure that you’re heard…
    Add resonance.

The voice originates in the larynx, where the sound is very weak, then resonates through the sinuses, throat, mouth, nose and chest, where the volume gets pumped up.

To be most powerful, your voice should come from every part of the facial mask, the inverted triangular area that stretches between the two sinuses and the throat. Practice engaging this area by humming as you count to 10, blending the hum with the numbers in a smooth flow—mmm/one, mmm/two, mmm/three, etc. (Your lips and nose should tingle.) Do this daily.

    Work the phone.
When you’re on a call, imagine that the other person is several feet away from you. This will help you project your voice. Never cradle the handset between your ear and shoulder—that makes you sound as if you are calling for ransom money.

    Strengthen your vocal cords.
Susan Miller, PhD, director of the Center for the Voice at Georgetown University Hospital, recommends a way to build up the vocal cords by vibrating the lips. You can stick out your tongue and make a raspberry sound or trill the “r” sound. The vibration should be powered by your lungs, not your lips.

    Polish your vowels and consonants.
If people say you mumble, it could be that your diction needs a little help.

Say the following sequence of phrases slowly several times each day to improve your clarity—Green tea ice cream is a treat to eat…Mean men may cause harm…Go with the flow to stay in the know…Ed said get into bed…She lost her poise after hearing the noise…I knew the crew in a blue canoe.

Believe that you deserve to be heard.
Insecure people often speak softly. Remind yourself that your ideas are as important as anyone else’s.
See a doctor if you have hoarseness, laryngitis and/or pain while speaking. These could be signs of a medical problem.

  9. Paola Says:

Michelle, this happens a lot in mexico. sick, sad men rape little girls and a lot of them are too afraid to say anything. this is why many just end up having the kids…. so sad..

  10. Helen Says:

This is what the republicans mean when they put out the lie that a if a woman is really raped she can “shut that whole thing down.”

So under republicans we will be investigating whether or not she was raped”? Of COURSE she was raped, she’s ten years old!

But, even then as in catholic Mexico, men can use religion to force a child raped when she was 9 years old to have the baby.

It leaves one to wonder who is sicker the men who rape or the ones who force females to bear the children of that rape.

    Helen

  11. Maggie Says:

Sadly the way the worlds comming along they become active real young..it might not be rape. After all she did get pregnant.

  12. Carrol Says:

Maggie are you one of those brain dead republican women. At 10 years old, it doesn’t matter how the child acted. It is rape. A man who has sex with a child is raping her, now matter how you want to look at it.

  13. Rachel Says:

Maggie, I could slap some sense into your idiotic brain. Remove your head from up the pope’s pedophiliac ass and ask yourself if you know of any 9 year olds that want some object being shoved between their legs?

It is idiots like you that the republicans count on at the polls. I don’t know what god you are praying to, but it isn’t the one I am.

My God would not condone one of his children being forced to endure a second invasion of this child’s sanity by forcing her to bear the spawn of a rape for 9 months and then to experience the trauma of birth to satisfy some perverse moral belief of another.

If you want to force your 9 year old child to carry a growing fetus in her body for nine months, that God help her is your parental right.

But, you sadistic bitch have no right to force those sick beliefs on others.

    Rachel

  15. Erica Says:

Excuse me, if the girl is 10, she’s not “practically” a child – she IS a child. Perhaps you meant to write “practically an infant herself”?

Men don’t care who or what age the object they force themselves upon sexually. Neither are they concerned with the additional suffering a pregnancy can cause the victim.

Women on the other hand should be more sympathetic. Who are you women that allow men to tell you what to do with your bodies?

Have you no self esteem? Why would any woman support men in forcing a rape or victim of incest to carry the fetus to term?

Who are you wretched, contemptible excuses for females?

  16. Nate Says:

Did anyone see that traitor and Former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette on 60 Minutes?

It reminded me of when the republicans outed the female CIA agent because her husband disagreed with Bush that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction.

It seems that anything goes when the republicans want to get their way. Damn the nation, patriotism is just an instrument to use to motivate the masses to do their bidding without thought.

Now they have put this greedy opportunist out there to try to Swift-Boat Obama. Damn the consequences to the nation or its people.

    Nate

  17. Kent Says:

I agree, pure hubris and greed – that’s why this guy is promoting.

But you noticed that like the other hypocrites while he claims that he wants the truth out about the others, he under went 4 hours of make-up to insure his own personal safety.

Though he was not opposed to spending a lifetime of rolling in cash for his violation of his code with the SEALs, he did not wish to spend any of that time hiding for his violation.

I personally hope they find his ass, and treat him to a long, and painfully slow retribution.

If only Obama had known at the time that the republicans had met before he took office officially to agree to sabotage any attempt he made to improve the economy he could have avoided this reaction.
    ===========================

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is acknowledging he was angry with House Republicans last year when a supposed “grand bargain” budget agreement with House Speaker John Boehner collapsed.

Obama tells CBS News’ Scott Pelley he doesn’t know if he was mad enough to break a telephone receiver, but says “I wasn’t happy.”

According to author Bob Woodward’s new book entitled “The Price of Politics,” a person in the room with Obama said he thought he was going to smash the receiver.

Obama tells CBS he was angry over what he called “the willingness on the part of some House Republicans to potentially see the United States default on its obligations for the first time, which could have undone all the repair work that we had done coming out of the financial crisis.”
    ===================
What do you call an organized effort to destroy the economy of a country? Who terrorism be too strong?

    Luke

  20. GG Says:

    Obama supports steaming madness.

  21. JTH Says:

    Remember McCain’s campaign slogan ?

    “Country First”

Such a nice sentiment, but when has the modern Republican party lived up to it?

  22. A true Texan Says:

Luke, that’s really odd that Obama was mad because the republicans would work with him. He was the one who proposed Simpson Bowles and walked away. Sequester was his idea and, unfortunately, some Repubs agreed to it.

I love that the media is helping Obama present this as him wanting a deal but not getting cooperation when in fact he slapped away any chance of compromise that involved genuine spending cuts.

A little truth here would help. But it’s Obama and the left we’re dealing with (and a media in full affirmative action mode to help Obama).

  23. BS Says:

Luke, the Republicans will be FIRED for this. We the people did not put them in their Congressional chair to sabotage our economy and block our jobs. They are not there to make secret pacts and deal against the american people. They got to go.

  24. SW Says:

Obama, should be mad — heck I’m glad he was mad….
I’m also mad at the GOP – grandstanding….trying to ensure Obama fails!!!
    It’s disgraceful!!!

  25. Sofia Says:

JTH, McCain was not different. He was just good at claiming he put “country first.” He could get more credibility without any substance because he was a prisoner of war.

But in reality he was just as hypocritical and he Definitely put his fortunes before the country when he selected Palin to be his VP.

It is without question that she was unqualified to be in a position to take over the presidency of the USA in any circumstance. McCain picked her solely to get the woman vote.

He gambled that the press wouldn’t call him on his terrible choice( they didn”t) and he gambled that women for the most part would vote for the woman regardless whether she was an idiot(they didn’t).

    Sofia

  26. CM Says:

The question was “So, you voted for defense spending cuts by $500 billion, and now you’re criticizing the president for those same defense cuts that you voted for and called a victory,”

Ryan’s response “The goal was never that these defense cuts actually occur,” whaaat?

So, which Paul Ryan are you… the one who was for it, signed it and called it victory, or the one with Myth. Either way, how can one trust you to lead, if you don’t believe in yourself?

Right before our eyes…. in less than a month…. Ryan has become a Romney flip flopping twin

I just finished watching Rachel Maddow interview Dan Rather concerning his view as to what is the state of the present election process. She won’t say it because she knows that she would be tarred and feathered by the white boy controlled media, but I am certain she sees the idiot for what he is only slightly smarter that the other dumb white boys we have been told by other white boys how great they are or were(if the idiots are dead).

He did his best to tell us how Clinton’s speech was better than Obama’s because ex President Clinton knows how to talk to the “people.” Here he was referring to whites and meaning “the people.”

Like the rest of his ilk, he had no problem lumping the outright lies Romney was telling with the difference of interpretation Obama was referring to.

Dan Rather is a typical white boy who has been given accolades by other white boys.

Hence, he says he expected Paul Ryan to be cool under pressure. It took Rachael Maddow to point out the Dan Rather the error of his assumption. She told the white boy that she knew that Paul Ryan would not be “cool under pressure,” because he had never been exposed to the kind of media scrutiny that a bigger arena that the small town state of Wisconsin presented him with.

She concluded with the example that the fact that Ryan thought he could get away with lying about an easy checkable fact as the time in which he finished a marathon in was proof of that inexperience. One would think that the “great” Dan Rather went away with a clue that he should have thought of that before he went on her show giving the kind of white boy deference to another white boy he gave to Ryan.

Yes, white boys, if women and OTWs had been given an opportunity to anchor those chairs that the Dan Rather and Walter Cronkites were given we might have real intellects to honor rather than the new “icons” we are told that we should revere.

This is no small thing. Like the Office of the President and all the other offices, and positions that up to now only white boys were privileged to hold as the true Affirmative Action Beneficiaries, it is becoming apparent that they did not do a very good job.

Certainly nowhere as good a job as they have at telling us how good a job they have done.
