Are You Voting ‘Style’ Over ‘Substance’?
Posted by Michelle Moquin on October 4th, 2012
Good morning!
Well, I can see from all the comments that many of you watched the debate last night. I did too. Yes, I can see that the republicans are gloating and the dems are gasping. I can’t say it was Obama’s best debate “performance”, but like, Sam, this isn’t American Idol…these aren’t actors playing a part to win an Oscar - This is the real job of the President of The United States.
Who is the candidate that has a better plan, and is best qualified to run our country for the betterment of all? You know my answer.
If this was the Oscars, I agree, let Romney win for the “Best LSOS“. Obama is winner for the “Best POTUS“.
It’s sad that voters will look at “style over substance” (Thanks Maddow blog for articulating what I could not) and swing their undecided vote to the LSOS side simply because Romney was the stronger debater, and let me remind you, spewing rhetoric and lies.
For 18 months we’ve been hearing what both sides will bring to the table. Nothing has changed. Romney is still lying his ass off and will continue to do so and whatever else he needs to do to win.
And for the past 4 years we’ve been experiencing just what Obama can do and has done in spite of the “party of no’, voting against any idea or plan the dems have had. And in spite of it all, he has gotten a lot done for America. More than any other president. But many refuse to see that.
Even though it is a fact that the repubs planned to sabotage America on the night of Obama’s inauguration. Many refuse to see that as well.
And now, we watch as the republicans disenfranchise all across the nation and yet, again people refuse to see that.
People have the gall to judge his “style”…and really, it comes down to the “stupidity”. The stupidity to choose Romney over Obama just because he did a better job at the debate last night. That just shows you how simple minded, short-sighted people can be that they can’t see past the “drama” of the debate, to get to the core of what’s really important for America. These aren’t actors, this isn’t a play – this is real life and real lives are at stake.
If you want a president and party that will lie to you day after day and make promises that they never intend to keep because their best interest is them and theirs, not the 99%, and certainly not the 47%…If you want a party who shows daily that they simply don’t care about you…who will lead our country to hell in the proverbial hand basket, then vote for Romney.
You already know how I feel about Obama. Do I care if he wasn’t his best last night? Yes. Not because I wanted to see him waste Romney away, - yes that would’ve been entertaining. But only because there are so many short sighted, ignorant voters who will only vote based on the “show” last night, based on “style”, and not “substance”, because they’re too lazy to get the real facts and make an informed responsible decision.
If they took the time to really get involved…to learn the facts and address and confront the blatant lies Romney keep spewing, they would know that Obama is the best and only pick for president.
I am loyal to Obama and I know why. I know what is the right thing and best thing to do for our country. I know what the facts are and what Obama’s plans are. I know and trust that country comes first for him and that the best interest of all of the American people is at the forefront of his mind.
Obama will do what is right for all and lead our country to greatness. Romney will not. and in the end, our country will be in ruins.
The bottom line is this: Romney is a LSOS. Let’s HOPE that the media will have a field day exposing the lies that Romney expressed last night, and let’s HOPE that those of you undecideds or those of you that are leaning toward Romney are listening and that you come to your senses.
I found this write on Maddow’s blog that I liked. I didn’t come up with “style over substance”, but it certainly articulates how I feel. I encourage you all to think about it: If after last night’s debate, are you voting “style over substance”?
My suggestion is “don’t”. Know the facts and Know the lies.
The triumph of style over substance
One of the main drawbacks to televised political theatrics is that we tend to evaluate the events in an unconstructive way. We see players on a stage, after extensive rehearsals, playing to a packed house, and we judge them as if they are actors — who seemed “crisp” and looked “confident.”
In other words, we invariably value political theater on its theatrical qualities, watching to see who knew their lines and delivered them more effectively.
By this measure, when it comes to determining who “won” last night’s debate in Denver, I’d argue the conventional wisdom is right: it wasn’t close. Based on style and performance, Mitt Romney did all of the things a “winning” debater is supposed to do.
Did he know his lines? Obviously, yes. Did he deliver them well? Flawlessly. I argued last week that Romney’s “strength as a debater is wildly underappreciated” and “if Democrats expect Romney to falter in the debates, they’re making a big mistake.” Last night illustrated what I was talking about.
President Obama, meanwhile, was listless and timid. He stumbled on his words. At times he seemed distracted and unfocused. There were key opportunities for the president to go on the offensive, but for whatever reason, he chose not to engage. For pundits checking boxes — who gave the appearance of being “in control”? — Romney excelled.
But all of this overlooks an element I like to think it sometimes important: substance. The men on the stage last night aren’t actors; they’re candidates for the nation’s highest office. Delivering lines well is a nice quality, but as the dust settles, it’s worth pausing to reflect on whether those lines were true and reflect reality in any meaningful way.
Indeed, it seems to me Romney thrived in large part because he abandoned the pretense of honesty. And as it turns out, winning a debate is surprisingly easy when a candidate decides he can say anything and expect to get away with it.
Romney told viewers his proposed $5 trillion tax cut isn’t really his proposed $5 trillion tax cut. He suggested he could eliminate a $1 trillion deficit by going after Big Bird. He said his non-existent health care plan protects those with pre-existing conditions when in reality the exact opposite is true. He cited trumped up “studies” from far-right ideologues as if they’re legitimate, assuming the public won’t know the difference. He said a deficit that’s shrunk has actually “doubled.”
And when Romney wasn’t repeating falsehoods, he was furiously shaking an Etch A Sketch, rolling out yet another version of himself.
This new model — version 8.0? 9.0? — likes regulations of the financial industry, wants to work with Democrats, thinks his Massachusetts health care law was a great idea, and has no use for the goals of his running mate’s budget plan that Romney enthusiastically endorsed. Does this in any way reflect the candidate who’s been running for president the last year and a half? No, but the Republican assumes most voters won’t realize and most news organizations covering the campaign won’t tell them.
He might very well be right.
But as Romney and his supporters take a victory lap this morning, it’s fair to note their success was a triumph for style over substance.

A Message from Author and Former Television Producer Scott Wheeler, Executive Director of the National Republican Trust PAC
SEE THE HARD-HITTING TELEVISION ADS THAT WILL DEFEAT OBAMA
WE MAY BE THE ONLY ORGANIZATION WITH THE GUTS AND THE SAVVY TO STOP OBAMA’S RADICAL AGENDA!!!!
Dear Reader and Fellow Patriot:
Right now Obama and the Democrats are fighting the upcoming election battle in 12 critical swing states. We must respond right away or we will lose in November! Like you, I know that if we don’t defeat Obama and the Democrats now our country may never recover the freedom and prosperity that was the promise of this great nation.
WE HAVE A PLAN THAT WILL NOT ONLY DEFEAT OBAMA — BUT WILL HELP US TAKE BACK THE SENATE AS WELL!!
We have produced television ads to run nationwide (and concentrated in the battleground states) right now that will counter the Democrat attacks, including our latest punch “Obama Hasn’t Built Anything!” This ad will appeal to independent voters, and moderate Democrats — and expose the facts as to why Obama has failed to fix the economy.
Why Do Independent Voters Need to See Our “Obama Hasn’t Built Anything” Ad?
• One of the reasons Obama is still in the race is because of his “likeability.” The general public, some of whom will be determining the outcome of this election, does not see the Barack Obama that we see, they only see the carefully crafted image that Democrats spinners and the mainstream media portray. This ad is designed to show Obama in an unfavorable light, but in a subtle way. One of Obama’s tactics has been class warfare, using divisive labels to tear down his opposition. This television ad (which you can view at GOPTrust.com) shows that Obama made millions in the government influence business.
• Our ad not only portrays Obama as failure with the economy — it exposes the fact that while we Americans were getting poorer, he was getting richer. Obama likes to brag that he is wealthy, but his wealth came from government influence — he never created anything except the big lie about himself that helped him get elected.
Help Us Get This Ad Seen By Everyone in America!! Click Here to Donate!!
OUR TELEVISION ADS HAVE WON AWARDS FOR THEIR EFFECIVENESS. We may be the only organization that can stop the powerful Obama machine.
Here Are Some Other Ads We Will Be Airing NOW Until the Election!
Obamacare Tax Increase Ad
Incorporating Obama’s own words, combined with the words of his Solicitor General and Nancy Pelosi, this ad will up the ante for Obamacare and its namesake to defend himself this election.
Fast and Furious GOP Trust Ad
If Obama wants to lie about us, we will tell the truth about him!
New GOP Trust TV ad exposes Obama’s cover-up of the Fast and Furious scandal and raises questions about why Obama has refused to say what he knows.
Obama Political Ad: Fair Shot for Cronies — Naming Names Ad
Obama’s Cronyism Exposed! Obama took money the Middle Class to give to pay back his wealthy campaign supporters.
Bachmann Muslim Brotherhood Ad
Jim Graves defends Muslim Brotherhood, mocks Michele Bachmann for warning of the Brotherhood. Support Bachmann and Don’t Let the Muslim Brotherhood Win This One!
You can see all of these ads and many more at our website
http://www.GOPTrust.com
Who Is The National Republican Trust PAC?
If you are not familiar with our name, you will be familiar with WHAT WE’VE DONE OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS!
Here are just a few examples:
• Our famous Reverend Jeremiah Wright ads exposed Obama’s ties to the venomous preacher when others were afraid to attack.
• We were first in and last out during the debt ceiling fight producing and airing multiple TV ads and sending hundreds of thousands of letters to every member of Congress.
• Our national and local TV and radio campaign ads and independent expenditures have elected dozens of true conservative leaders at the state and federal levels.
• Our cutting edge documentary Breaking Point that aired nationwide and in dozens of key states contributed to critical Republican victories in 2010.
• We brought the issue of the Ground Zero Mosque into everyone’s living rooms and energized millions with our national TV ad.
• Our explosive book Shadow Government: What Obama Doesn’t Want You to Know About His Czars exposed Obama’s long list of radical czars and was the catalyst for public outrage, congressional hearings, and high profile resignations.
• Our investigative team exposed Obama’s stimulus money going to fund the Marxist Brecht Forum.
• Our investigative team also exposed the many lies Obama utilized during the healthcare debate.
• By blocking their attempts to pass Obamacare legitimately, our national and local TV and radio ads forced them to use illegitimate tactics, thus exposing Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.
• We fight Big Labor! Our union ad in Wisconsin was one of the most effective television ads EVER seen on TV. Pollster Frank Luntz said as much in a Fox News interview about our ad:
“We have been testing ads in Wisconsin for the last two months and almost all of them have failed… Either they appeal to Republican partisans or Democrat partisans but not both until the Republican Trust [GOP Trust] came in. This is one of the rare times in American politics today when a very clear, very tough message appeals across the political spectrum… They set the proper context… They set the proper tone.”
–Frank Luntz, Fox News Channel, America Live, 3/30/2011.
WE ARE THE PAC THAT GETS THE JOB DONE!
Please GO HERE to Support Our Many Efforts!
Together We Can STOP Obama’s Re-Election!!
When Republicans have been weak, we have stayed strong
in the face of the Democratic onslaught.
As you are probably aware, we have a great track record in exposing Democrat lies. Our Shock and Awe Campaign from the 2008 election made the entire country notice Obama’s 20 year relationship with his anti-American pastor Jeremiah Wright. We helped organize the Tea Party and we were the driving force behind the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in the 2010 election. WE ARE THE REPUBLICANS YOU CAN TRUST!
The National Republican Trust PAC (GOPTrust) has been widely recognized by everyone in politics as the group that forces Democrats to change their strategy. We are not politicians — we are Americans who have been successful in other sectors responding to the political class in a logical way and saying the things that you would say if you had the opportunity.
Because of our team’s background and training in various aspects of intelligence and counterintelligence and dealing with insurgencies, we have laid out an effective strategy for defeating the insurgent far-left Democrats such as Obama.
In the 2010 election, we were the ONLY organization that spent more than we received in contributions. This means more than 100 percent of our 2010 donations went to the cause we are all fighting for- taking back our country.
GO HERE NOW To Help Us Get Our Plans Underway …or keep reading to see some of the highlights of what we are doing…
In addition to all this, we are working on other projects to take away some of Obama’s primary assets and make it harder for him to gain illegitimate advantage in the election:
1. Neutralize the Media
The so-called “mainstream media” is Obama and the Democrat’s fifth column and according to many analysts (from the Left and Right) the media gives Democrats up to a 10 point advantage in the polls. Republicans have not revealed a plan yet for dealing with the media, WE HAVE!
2. Fight Big Labor
Republicans have long been victims of outrageous political activities of Big Labor unions, which basically have come out and admitted to having a socialist orientation. Despite their massive funds and political power, we have been able to neutralize the power of unions like no one else has in the past.
Our union ad in Wisconsin was one of the most effective television ads EVER seen on TV, as seen in the previous quote from Pollster Frank Luntz earlier in this letter.
3. Counter Hollywood Propaganda
We already know that Obama’s Hollywood allies are making a movie about him killing Osama bin Laden. Obama’s shameful attempt to take absolute credit for Osama bin Laden’s death is un-presidential and is a slap in the face to the thousands of soldiers, sailors, and airmen for whom he has no respect.
We produced an ad to set the record straight and to take the killing of bin Laden off the political table for Democrats.
4. Defend the Tea Party
We are constantly being told by the media that the Tea Party movement is becoming increasingly unpopular. This is a well-orchestrated plan intended to delegitimize and suppress the effectiveness of the most powerful grassroots uprising in decades. The Left knows an energized Tea Party will lead to Obama’s defeat.
5. More Ads for More Conservatives
We must continue to produce and air our award winning TV and radio campaign ads in districts and states where we can elect true free market conservatives. Our independent expenditures have turned the tide for conservative candidates time and time again.
Now is the time for Action! Democrat strategists believe that Obama is vulnerable in this election and the right tactics will lead to his defeat. Time is of the essence as Obama rebuilds his grassroots organization and builds a trap to use in blaming Republicans for his failed economic policy.
The GOP Trust has a history of success in these efforts and we’re accountable only to you, our supporters and not to any special interest. In the 2010 election, we were the ONLY organization that spent more than we took in. This means more than 100 percent of our 2010 donations went to the cause of electing true conservatives.
Time is running out for us to inform undecided voters of the dangerous implications of a second-term for Obama! IF YOU ARE IN, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WITH A DONATION OF $100, $50, $25 — or whatever you can spare!

Scott Wheeler’s New Book
Promoting Decline: Obama vs. America is Here!
Scott Wheeler’s new book Promoting Decline: Obama vs. America
will not only rattle Obama and the Democrats,
it will shake up the entire political establishment!
Wheeler’s hard-hitting investigative book reveals the corruption of the Obama Administration:
• exposes the attacks on the Tea Party
• lays bare the apparatchiks in the mainstream media
• will rock the foundations of the princeling power structure that now controls Washington!
Promoting Decline not only chronicles corruption in the Obama Administration and the destructive policies that Obama has used to weaken America, it tells of the Tea Party role in changing the status quo, the weaknesses of the Republicans and how and why they have let the Democrats control the agenda even when they were in charge.
Wheeler’s last book, Shadow Government: What Obama Doesn’t Want You to Know about His Czars written in 2009, raised awareness about Obama’s abuse of power by selecting people for powerful positions without Senate confirmation. That book led to congressional hearings and investigations.
For those in the majority who have a pro-America world view, Promoting Decline: Obama vs. America details the evidence of Obama’s impact on America so you can argue the constitutional case to others who are subject to only the mainstream media version of events.

Obama couldn’t lay a hand on Mitt. Because Mitt was running from right to left faster than anyone could imagine. Tax cut yes, no, tax cut no. Obamacare no, I mean yes. He’s like trying to punch jello.

I was in debate class in high school . In a single debate it is best to be direct and confident . But in a series of debate the first debate can be a throw away where you are passive enough to allow your opponent to reveal their most important talking points.
And in Romney’s case enough time to put your foot in your mouth . Looks like Romney may have won this first debate but only on a confidence / energy point and not on truth / reality point .

GOOD AFTERNOON FROM DAILY EVENTS!
A very impressive performance from Gov. Mitt Romney last night in Denver. The president looked lost, wavering and not excited to be there. But, that shouldn’t surprise us. He’s been MIA for four years. We will be hashing out what it all means all day at Human Events, but for right now, enjoy our offerings below.
Have a great Friday!
– Adam Tragone, Managing Editor
October 5th, 2012 at 6:03 am
My answer to the boys at “Human Events” is that their boy just told lie after lie. He told the same lie George W. Bush told in 2000. And you know what he did for his 8 years in office.
===================================
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s tax plan would be a boon for the wealthiest Americans, a fact Romney himself admitted in GOP primary debates.
Now, though, Romney has decided that cutting taxes for the rich isn’t what his plan will do, and he insists that he won’t support any tax plan — even his own, apparently — that provides the rich with a massive tax cut. “I will not reduce the taxes paid by high-income Americans,” Romney said in last night’s presidential debate.
The last Republican president used a similar argument to sell his tax proposal when he was running for election. At a debate on October 3, 2000, George W. Bush made the exact same claim, telling debate moderator Jim Lehrer that once his tax plan became law, “the wealthiest of Americans” would “pay more taxes”:
BUSH: Let me tell you what the facts are. The facts are, after my plan, the wealthiest of Americans pay more taxes on the percentage of the whole than they do today. Secondly, if you’re a family of four making $50,000 in Massachusetts, you get a 50% tax cut.
Watch it:http://www.c-spanvideo.org/clip/1615571
Bush’s tax cuts eventually became law, and as a result, the wealthy got a massive tax cut. In addition to rate cuts on income taxes, the Bush tax cuts included cuts to the capital gains rate and other investment taxes and an estate tax cut, all of which largely benefit the rich. The plan came at a cost of $2.5 trillion over its first decade.
And while Bush was technically correct that the rich did “pay more taxes on the percentage of the whole,” that is “a useless measure of tax progressivity,” as Center for American Progress Director of Tax and Budget Policy Michael Linden has explained.
The share of taxes paid by the wealthy grew by 25 percent under Bush, but their share of income grew by 30 percent, evidence that they actually got a massive tax cut. Bush’s promise, just like Romney’s, is a vague misdirection meant to distract from the overall tax cut he planned to provide.
Romney’s plan, at a cost of nearly $5 trillion, is even bigger. And though Romney at least says he will cover some of the cost, the closure of loopholes wouldn’t offset the cuts for the rich, and to avoid adding to the deficit, he would have to raise taxes on the middle class.
Romney relies on another similar argument Bush used, insisting that economic growth will offset the remaining costs. But the Bush tax cuts were followed by years of tepid job and economic growth that blew a massive hole in the federal budget and left Bush flailing when it came to his promise to pay off the national debt in a decade.
A Republican National Committee spokesperson earlier this year said that Romney’s economic policies would be “Bush, just updated.” It turns out his arguments are too.

If this guy gets elected, the country will be run like a corporation for the rich.

The last time the republicans had a candidate this stupid he got elected
October 5th, 2012 at 6:04 am
Romney’s debate performance was like every other public utterance he’s ever made: BS. The only thing more worrisome is how Obama laid down and didn’t challenge him.
October 5th, 2012 at 6:05 am
At this point, no one is allowed to be a Republican without taking a gigantic leap of faith in free-market fundamentalism. On some level, they realize that “voodoo economics” — tax cuts for rich people and deregulation of everything — didn’t work for Reagan and didn’t work for Bush 43, but they believe in it so they’re selling it again….
Meanwhile, the rest of us, who live in the real world, have to make sure that these free-market theocrats are not given control of the White Houses or either house of Congress!
October 5th, 2012 at 6:06 am
Damn, Bush and the republican were just ruining the country 4 years ago. How the hell can people have such short memories!!!
October 5th, 2012 at 6:06 am
Republicans are immune to learning.
October 5th, 2012 at 6:07 am
I just don’t understand why people think tax cuts will work this time. They didn’t work for 10 years. Why would they now?
October 5th, 2012 at 6:15 am
Those who support this lying clown know exactly what Romney is doing. They know that he is a LSOS. They just don’t care.
The republican party has never ever had any kind of economic plan that didn’t benefit the wealthy and screw the rest of the people. That’s just what they do and that’s what they will always do.
The problem is people are just too ignorant to see it or don’t want to see it is more like it.
Most of the people in that party are in it because: they think being republican means others will think they are with money; they are racists who want to keep the status quo meaning the white man continuous to get preferential treatment; they think they will be one of the super rich one day so they want to get those tax advantages; they are religious nuts who want to force the rest of the country to accept their “moral” ideas; they belong to the 1% who are using those others to gain power and continue to screw the rest of us.
October 5th, 2012 at 6:23 am
Sorry, I forgot to put my name to the above anon17. But while I was at it I wanted to add this about the republicans continuing to suppress votes.
I hope no one rests because of the recent court decisions because those crooked bastards are still at it.
=============================
As courts continue to block voter suppression efforts around the county, conservative groups are redoubling efforts to intimidate voters at the polls come Election Day.
New Mexico has started its own voter purge of 177,000 people, including a voting rights activist married to a state representative. However, as the law won’t go into effect until November 2014, the local Republican Party has apparently started training “poll challengers” for this election.
A hidden camera caught Pat Morlen, the vice chair of the Sandoval County Republican Party, instructing volunteer “poll challengers” to demand photo ID and force legal voters to use provisional ballots. The video, filmed by the nonprofit ProgressNow New Mexico, shows vice-chair Morlen making several claims that directly contradict New Mexico law:
MORLEN: You can request to see a form of ID. At the request of two or more precinct board members of different political parties, a voter shall still present the required physical form of identification.
VOLUNTEER: What happens if we get people in there who are part of what the media is calling the purge?
MORLEN: They’ll vote provisional. That’s all that’s gonna happen.
Watch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jYPH3J0_EaI
In spite of these false instructions, New Mexicans who were flagged as “inactive” voters are still permitted to vote with regular ballots in November. The misinformation didn’t stop there. ProgressNow compiled an extensive list of the lies presented as election law, including claims that Spanish speakers are not permitted interpreters and that the police are involved in election monitoring:
CLAIM: “The police are supposed to be the ones who ensure that the election is legit.” FACT: Elections officials preside over elections, not the police. FACT: Police can be enlisted to ensure the orderly conduct of an election but officers who interfere with an election are guilty of a petty misdemeanor.
CLAIM: The trainer claims a person who changed their address but stayed within their same voting precinct should receive a provisional ballot.
FACT: Anyone in this situation is given a regular ballot at the polls. (See 1 NMAC 10.3)
CLAIM: The trainer claims that interpreters are not provided to non-English speakers and then is unsure if polling places will provide Spanish-language ballots. FACT: Assistance for people in language minorities is provided, as are Spanish-language ballots.
Morlen also disparaged disabled New Mexicans, opining, “if the person can’t even say their name, at least their name, I don’t see why they should be voting.”
Obama has a narrow lead over Romney in the New Mexico polls, projecting a very close race. This particular training was filmed just two days after a study was released estimating 10 million Latinos could be disenfranchised by various voter suppression efforts.
While Morlen’s statements are easily debunked, New Mexico voters are likely to be harassed and intimidated by these volunteer “voter challengers” armed with false information.
But New Mexican voters aren’t the only targets; the national Tea Party group True the Vote has mobilized a large army of volunteers to go to the polls all over the country to harass voters.
True the Vote tested out their voter intimidation skills during Gov. Scott Walker’s (R-WI) recall election in June, when poll watchers blocked students and African Americans from voting.

When you are confronted by these bastards, tell them to show you some identification. Tell them you want to submit their names and stories to the FBI because it is against federal law to interfere with a person attempting to vote.
Turn the bastards in.
