Obama Promotes His Economic Plans
Posted by Michelle Moquin on October 1st, 2012
Good morning!
Just noticing…
…In comparison to LSOS Romney’s ad that I posted the other day, this is a great ad by Obama that promotes his economic plans.
Obama Touts ‘New Economic Patriotism’ In 2-Minute Ad (VIDEO)
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is pitching a broad economic argument to voters ahead of next week’s debate with Republican opponent Mitt Romney, buying TV time in seven battleground states to promote what he calls a “new economic patriotism.”
In a two-minute ad, Obama looks into the camera as he promotes an economic plan he says will create 1 million manufacturing jobs, cut oil imports and hire thousands of new teachers.
The ad set to air in New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and Colorado comes as Obama and Republican Mitt Romney shadow each other while looking for votes in a closely contested race. On Thursday, the two candidates are scheduled to campaign in the same state for the third straight day, this time in Virginia, a critical battleground in the Nov. 6 election.
Romney is to appear in suburban Washington for a veterans event, while Obama speaks at Farm Bureau Live in Virginia Beach.
The simultaneous visits follow an all-day duel Wednesday in Ohio, where Romney declared he can do more than Obama to improve the lives of average people. Obama scoffed that a challenger who calls half the nation “victims” was unlikely to be of much help.
Meanwhile, new Republican-leaning independent groups have entered the presidential advertising fray as polling suggests Romney’s campaign may be losing ground against Obama in key states such as Ohio and Florida.
The commercials, aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are now undecided, join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states in the fast-moving presidential contest. Americans for Job Security launched an $8.7 million ad buy in six battleground states, while the Ending Spending Action Fund, a new conservative group bankrolled by billionaire Joe Ricketts, was set to debut a $10 million, four-state ad campaign on Thursday.
Polls show Obama widening his lead in several key states amid backlash from a leaked video in which Romney disparages the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay federal income tax as government-dependent Obama supporters who see themselves as victims and won’t take responsibility for their own lives.
Obama’s campaign was reveling in the latest public polling but trying to crush any sense of overconfidence. “If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that,” campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday.
Romney went after working-class voters at three stops in Ohio, while Obama rallied college crowds at Bowling Green and Kent State. Early voting in Ohio begins next week.
“If President Obama were to be re-elected, what you’d see is four more years like the last four years, and we can’t afford another four more years like the last four years,” Romney told a boisterous crowd in Toledo at the day’s final stop.
Romney said the country had lost more than half a million manufacturing jobs in the past four years. “This is not the path we want for America,” he said.
Romney’s campaign has been reeling from his caught-on-video comments at a Florida fundraiser last May. New opinion polls, conducted after the video became public last week, show Obama opening up apparent leads over Romney in battleground states, including Ohio and Virginia.
Romney told ABC News that the race was in a statistical tie in some national polls.
“I’m very pleased with some polls, less so with other polls, but frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down,” he said.
Obama was not about to let the video comments fade away. He said Wednesday that “America is not about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us together, as one nation, as one people.”
He added, “You can’t make it happen if you write off half the nation before you take office.”
Obama supporters are also working to keep Romney’s “47 percent” comments alive. Democratic super PAC Priorities USA Action and a political group tied to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees released a radio ad in Ohio and Virginia airing the remarks. The ad, part of a $1.25 million radio buy, tells listeners Romney’s “just not looking out for us.”
Obama flubbed a line at Kent State while building to his argument for keeping jobs in the United States. He mistakenly said, “I want to see us export more jobs.” He quickly corrected himself, saying he meant to say “export more products.”
“Excuse me,” Obama said. “I was a channeling my opponent there for a second.”
Associated Press writers Kasie Hunt and Steve Peoples in Ohio, Beth Fouhy in New York and Ben Feller and Jim Kuhnhenn in Washington contributed to this report.
UPDATE [7:49 a.m. ET]: The Romney campaign has responded to Obama’s new advertisement. Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul released the following statement:
“Four years ago, Barack Obama called it ‘unpatriotic’ to run up debts our children will have to pay. Yet in the time it takes his latest ad to run, our national debt grows by at least another $5 million. With $16 trillion in debt, 23 million Americans struggling for work, and spending out of control, President Obama’s record is clear: we can’t afford another four years that look like the last four years. Mitt Romney will strengthen the middle class, create 12 million new jobs and deliver what President Obama hasn’t – a real recovery.”

GOOD AFTERNOON FROM DAILY EVENTS!
Hard to believe it’s October already. It seems just like yesterday it was summer. Our offerings are below and make sure to come back later today to see our full debate coverage, including a how-to on the techniques Mitt Romney must use to debate Barack Obama effectively.
October 1st, 2012 at 1:43 pm
our system has allowed too much money in elections. When our elected reps have to spend more than half of their time raising money something is drastically wrong.
When donors give millions of dollars they expect something in return. That is human nature. Until we deal with money in elections and only allow public financing even the more principled candidate is forced to bend. Not necessarily for self interest, but for the nation’s interest also.
The other huge problem is media consolidation and stenographer journalism. We NEED an informed citizenry. After the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine corporatists realized the power of controlling talk radio. All they needed were talented manipulators and lobbyists to host the programs.
Without any time for opposing opinions and the ability to saturate the country to repeat and repeat their smears and propaganda we find ourselves with low informtion voters and millions in a state of cognitive dissonance.
If these 2 issues were “fixed” our country would be in much better shape.

“It’s not who votes that counts, it’s who counts the votes”
Ascribed to Stalin but possibly something in every republican state memo.
Michelle, I don’t know what your powers are, but since a lot of women on this blog seem to think they are formidable, I would like to suggest you get started today.
The republicans believe that the ends justify the means. They have no scruples. They are stealing vote as I speak.
Do what you can.

Two Simple Ways to Prevent Knee Injuries
At my gym, it boggles my mind when I see men lifting weights.
Aside from a few rare exceptions, most spend all their time doing bicep curls, tricep dips and chest presses, but little to no time on their quads, hamstrings and calf muscles, which leaves them with bulging upper bodies and weak, spindly chicken legs.
It’s a wonder that they don’t tip over!
A new study could be a wake-up call to these men.
Researchers found that men are much more likely than women to tear a very important ligament in their knees—the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL.
What’s reassuring, though, is that men who pump up their legs may reduce their chances of getting this painful and debilitating injury.
And for readers of Daily Health News, an exercise expert shared two easy moves with me that any man can start doing today to protect his knees.
INJURIES ALL TOO COMMON IN MEN
All men will want to pay close attention to these findings…
Researchers in Sweden analyzed knee ligament injuries in their country.
Ligaments in the knee include the ACL that I mentioned above and the PCL—posterior cruciate ligament—and although the study did not differentiate between them, the researchers noted that it’s the ACL that is nearly always the injured one.
The results: Of the total number of Swedes with knee ligament injuries over the eight years that were analyzed, 60% of them were men.
WHAT CAUSES THE TEAR?
The ACL connects the thigh bone (the femur) to one of the lower leg bones (the tibia). It protects the knee from hyperextension (excessive straightening) or unnaturally rotating the tibia.
The ligament is commonly torn when the body is yanked awkwardly in an unusual direction—for example, when you pivot suddenly while skiing and one leg is stuck motionless in the snow or when a football player is tackled from the front, causing the knee to be pushed backward.
Anyone’s ACL will tear if excessive force is put on the knee causing it to move beyond it’s normal range of motion. It could be that men get more tears because more of them participate in high-impact sports.
But a tear is even more likely when the muscles that support the knee are weaker.
In that case, it doesn’t take anything as harsh as football or as aggressive as skiing to do the job—even a light game of tennis or shooting some baskets can send you off with a torn ACL.
PROTECT YOUR ACL
An ACL injury is definitely one to avoid. It’s often extremely painful…treatment involves several months of physical therapy, possibly surgery and abstinence from sports…and an ACL injury makes you vulnerable to knee osteoarthritis.
I wanted to know how all people—especially men—can best protect the ACL, so I called physical therapist Mitchell Yass. He said to build strength in the muscles in the back of the legs—the hamstring (the muscle along the back of each thigh) and the gastrocnemius (the large muscle in each calf).
(Yass said that the quadriceps, the other major leg muscles that are on the fronts of the thighs, maintain proper glide of the kneecap—they don’t protect the ACL—so it’s less critical to strengthen those muscles.)
To strengthen the hamstring and the gastrocnemius muscle in each leg, Yass recommends doing two simple exercises twice a week. Both require holding a weight in each hand—the proper amount of weight for you is any amount that tires you by the tenth repetition of the exercise.
Do three sets of each exercise—10 reps in each set. For each exercise, stand with your knees straight but not locked.
1. The Straight-Leg Dead Lift:
To strengthen the hamstrings, stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. With a dumbbell in each hand (or a barbell in both) and your palms facing your legs, bend from the waist, and keeping the weight(s) close against your legs, slowly extend your arms straight down in front of your legs.
When you feel a pull in the back of your thighs, stop and move slowly back up to your original position.
If you have a back problem, talk to your doctor before trying this move. For a video demonstration from a UK health and wellness site called Doosport that Yass recommends, click here.
Alternatively, at the gym, you can strengthen your hamstrings by using the seated hamstring curl machine.
2. Standing Calf Raise:
To strengthen the gastrocnemius muscle in each calf, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a weight in each hand, and let your arms hang down at your sides with your palms facing your body.
Gently go up on your toes just far enough to raise your heels from the ground, and then return your heels to the ground. For a video demonstration from the staff at the Mayo Clinic that Yass recommends, click here.
Alternatively, at the gym, use what’s called a “donkey calf machine” to strengthen each gastrocnemius muscle.

Mitt Romney has proven that he can hold any position, just not for very long.
As soon as the next focus group, the next donor meeting, the next campaign stop is set, Mitt changes his stance.
He’s a weathervane

Well Obama has already showed us his morality standards, and that is all I will say on that matter
October 1st, 2012 at 8:50 pm
Yes.
President Obama believes that adults should be free to decide whom they can love, how to live their lives, what happens inside their own bodies.
He is a morally sound and secure man.
Mitt Romney has been more liberal than Ted Kennedy, and severely conservative.
He has been pro-choice and pro-life.
He has been for universal healthcare and against it.
No moral standards.

Votes will be stolen this year, as usual. More than 50,000 black legally registered voters were not permitted to vote in Florida in the 2000 vote.
The media try to ignore it but historians will point out that it was a bloodless coup by ruthless politicians, including the Supreme Court. Not only did Gore win when all the votes were counted by an outside, nonpartisan group, he would have won big if it hadn’t been for the dirty tricks like turning away legally registered black voters.
That’s why the Supreme Court had to stop the vote counting. They already knew. Texas was able to find 8 citizens who had voted illegally. None of them would have been stopped by a photo ID.
They voted in the wrong precinct or didn’t sign their mailed-in vote. But, as Greg Palast reported, black soldiers serving overseas have already been removed from the voting rolls. That’s a felony but it won’t be prosecuted.
No American has a right to believe that his or her vote will be counted because the Supremes have never vowed they won’t stop the vote count again if it’s going the wrong way.

The GOP proved in 2000 that they would do ANYTHING to win.
October 1st, 2012 at 9:16 pm
Except Gore getting his presidency stolen in Florida, how about some proof from the republicans that there is voter fraud? Can you imagine if Gore had won? No Iraq war and the $1 trillion price tag for starters for sure.
The SCOTUS stopped the recount for one reason–they knew it was stolen and that lawsuit against whackjob in Florida had proven it. One name–Katherine Harris. 175,010 ballots were rejected in Florida.

All these computer voter machine need a 100 % verifiable paper trail ,,if not they should never be used ,,and or the votes not even taken on them …these pacs can hire the greatest hackers in the world to change #,s,,,but try an verify it w/a paper trail ,,yep,,no paper trail,,no vote !!lets prevent pac hack fraud !!

It’s funny that the Right WIng Nuts come out backing onerous ID requirements…given that all recent evidence points to GOP rigging elections.
LOL Check your pants, GOP boys and girls, they’re on fire! LOL
October 1st, 2012 at 9:19 pm
If “Citizens United” or any other SuperPAC can spend millions on advertising, how much would they be willing to spend on pushing for hackable, non-auditable voting machines? Both parties have such SuperPACs, so what’s stopping them from going that route?
The GREATEST threat is not from someone voting under and assumed name, but from voting systems vulnerable to attack. That is where our major focus should be and not on those demonstrated unnecessary ID laws.

People will take more notice and have more potential for change on gender issues if the dominant class takes a stand and cares about helping improve womens opportunities and equality around the globe.
Growing up as an American woman I often take for granted the opportunities and respect I recieve from the opposite sex. Once you leave the United States however, you seem to regress about three decades, and women don’t have the same job opportunities, rights, or even freedoms as men do, and we should not sit idly by.
Men especially can make more of an impact becuase they are, subconciously or not, reinforcing these inequalities by doing nothing to promote gender equality.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:03 pm
Let me get this straight: Women were at a disadvantage. So we were told we needed more “gender equity”. Men needed to support women.
So we did. The education system was overhauled. Massive scholarships were allocated for females only. Women started outperforming men.
Boys have fallen behind in school. Less graduate. Less go to college. Less graduate from college. Less get good jobs. Articles like “The End of Men” follow.
Feminists gloat. We hear men need to “man up” and stop complaining. But we still need to support more “gender equity” at the top. Because “we’re in this together!” (But only when men are outperforming women. At the bottom, where women are outperforming men, it’s a great success story.)
I used to think that the relationship between men and women was a partnership. It’s not. Feminism has taught me better. It’s a competition.
Women don’t want equality. They want to trade places with men. Even here on this article. Read the comments. When women were expected to be housewives and stay at home mothers it was “male oppression”.
But now that women are outperforming men, I’m constantly hearing that men need to “do their part” and accept the roles of “house husbands” and “stay at home dads”. The hypocrisy of the modern American woman is astounding…

USA TODAY- GOP blocks Democrats’ equal pay bill
The bill’s defeat came after Democrats made a tightly coordinated media blitz to call for the bill’s passage. President Obama, Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Barbara Mikulski (D-M.d.), and Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Rosa Delauro (D-Conn.), all held conference calls expressing strong support for the legislation.
But Republicans strongly opposed the bill, leaving Democrats short of the seven votes needed to overcome a filibuster. Democrats said the paycheck bill’s defeat is the latest example of a Republican “war on women.”
It is a very sad day here in the United States Senate but it’s a sadder day everyday when paycheck day comes and women continue to make less than men.
President Obama lobbies for Paycheck Fairness Act.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:07 pm
I fully support equality in all forms. I used to call myself a feminist.
However, the all-too-common (admittedly not entirely undeserved) hostility that many feminists have toward men has forced me to the point where I can no longer consider myself a feminist.
A lot of feminists aren’t interested in equality so much as they are in reversing the gender roles — a “women have been dominated for thousands of years, now it’s man’s turn” mentality.
So now I simply refer to myself as an egalitarian.

Kenneth, I hope you don’t mean you literally poisoned your wife…can’t tell by your wording exactly.
Just a few on your comment re: ‘Money makes many do crazy things’ and hmmm, sometimes I wish I could sell out like that. Right now, a 70′s man, fit and awaiting his wife’s last breath has me in his ‘crosshairs’ (as described to me by observers) and he loves to throw out the ‘baby you can drive my car’ (has several, in fact, the exact fleet of vintage exotics I would own if i had the cake) but there’s a certain energy that works for me and if it isn’t present, than no amount of cash, good looks, fit body, fleets of vintage rides or anything else is going to attract me and/or switch that energy into chemistry. I’m discerning in that way. By the way, Pasadena is beautiful and green why would you want to leave, the only other place that compares is Palos Verdes/Rolling Hills…sigh…to bad they are huge republican enclaves (but I go and take in the beauty of the scenery anyway : )

Btw, I’m taking Romney’s stance LOL, he thinks if he’s elected he can do nothing and the economy will just fix itself (undoubtedly with no help from that 47%, too) and I, Zen Lill, believe if I just do nothing, the election will just fix itself providing he keeps up making asinine public statements. It’s very Zen, and perfectly imperfect in its design. I like it. – ZL

Help! My Mouth Tastes Salty All the Time
Three days before Thanksgiving, I suddenly developed a constant salty taste in my mouth that didn’t go away no matter how much I brushed and flossed my teeth, scraped my tongue, gargled with mouthwash or banished salty foods from my diet. Week after week, it persisted, driving me to distraction.
I consulted my dentist, periodontist, internist, allergist and naturopath, all to no avail. At the end of my rope, I went looking for an expert in the field.
That’s when I called Natasha Mirza, MD, a professor in the department of otorhinolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania Smell and Taste Center, both in Philadelphia.
She told me that I’m far from alone—in fact, she sees hundreds of patients each year who experience some version of this symptom. Some complain of a salty taste…a metallic taste…or a burning sensation in the mouth. Often there’s a medical explanation for their symptoms, but sometimes no cause can be found.
If you ever develop this problem, you’ll no doubt be as eager as I was to get to the bottom of it. Start by seeing your dentist, Dr. Mirza suggested—tooth decay, gum disease or an oral infection (such as thrush) could be the culprit. If no dental problem is detected, see your physician for a full physical exam.
Common underlying causes your doctor may investigate include…
• A digestive disorder, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, which may improve with dietary and lifestyle changes and/or medication.
• A sinus infection, which could cause a salty postnasal drip. If the infection is bacterial (rather than viral), a short course of antibiotics may solve the taste problem.
• Medication side effects. Blood pressure drugs, decongestants, antihistamines, antidepressants, sedatives and numerous other drugs can alter taste and dry out the mouth in some cases—so switching medications may help.
• Hormonal fluctuations due to menopause. These may lead to degenerative alterations in certain small nerves in the mouth and trigger a phenomenon called burning mouth syndrome. This is characterized by taste disturbances, including “constantly feeling like you’ve just eaten chili peppers,” Dr. Mirza said.
For some people, symptoms seem to ease with a daily dose of 20 mg to 30 mg of zinc. For maximum absorption, do not take zinc supplements with protein, bran or coffee. And avoid taking too high a dose, as that could cause side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhea, Dr. Mirza cautioned.
Rarely, a salty taste or other taste disturbance may be a sign of…
• Leakage of cerebrospinal fluid down the back of the throat, a possible complication of head surgery.
• Paraneoplastic syndrome, a rare disorder among patients with breast, ovarian or other cancers. Substances produced by the tumor affect the nervous system, leading to sensory perception problems and other symptoms.
• The chronic autoimmune disorder Sjögren’s syndrome, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s moisture-producing glands. This leads to dryness of the mouth, eyes, nasal passages and skin as well as joint pain, digestive upset and/or neurological problems.
If your doctor cannot determine the problem: Ask for a referral to a chemosensory center. There you may undergo an evaluation that includes a “sip, spit, and rinse” test, in which different chemicals are applied to different areas of your tongue.
Your sense of smell will be evaluated as well, probably by “scratch-and-sniff” tests. Dr. Mirza explained, “Smell and taste are very closely linked. So in some cases, patients who perceive an odd taste actually have a problem with smell and don’t realize it.” (For more info on what happens at chemosensory centers, visit the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center’s Web page at http://bit.ly/GEQmYH.)
When an underlying cause is diagnosed, treating that problem may resolve the taste issue, as well. But what if the mystery remains? “It’s frustrating, I know. But there are two important things to note about such a condition.
First, once all the scary possible causes are ruled out, it’s reassuring to know that a taste disorder is not life-threatening. Second, most such taste disturbances are relatively short-lived, lasting from three to 12 months. So try to be patient—time may take care of the problem,” Dr. Mirza said.
As for me? To mask the icky taste, I found it helpful to chew sugar-free gum sweetened with xylitol…spritz my mouth with a moisturizing spray (my favorite is Spry Rain Oral Mist)…and drink a lot of water. I also halted the daily antihistamine I had used for years to prevent allergy flare-ups and now I take the medicine only when my allergy symptoms get really bad.
I’m relieved to report that, five months after the saltier-than-the-sea taste first appeared, it has finally faded from a constant aggravation to an occasional annoyance.
