Most. Diverse. Ever.
Posted by Michelle Moquin on November 15th, 2012
Good morning!
This is so interesting, I wanted to share.
Most. Diverse. Ever.Congress Looks (A Little) More Like AmericaOne of the biggest stories over the past week has been the record diversity in the electorate and the role that played in helping propel the president to victory. That very diverse electorate also voted to send the most diverse Congress in history to Washington — more women, more LGBT people (including the first ever openly gay Senator), more religious diversity, more racial diversity, and more younger members. The new Congress is still older, whiter, and more male than the country as a whole, but the incoming Congress will at least look a bit more like the rest of America. The House Democratic caucus will not be majority white male for the first time ever. Meanwhile, the Republican caucus actually grew less diverse. ThinkProgress’ Adam Peck, Scott Keyes, and Zack Beauchamp took a look at some the faces that will be coming to Washington for the 113th Congress. Here’s what they found: New member diversity: Race/Ethnicity African American Latinos Asian American Religion First non-theist Gender Women Orientation LGBT Age Born in the 1980s *- Leading his congressional race, but it has yet to be officially called |
Readers: Kind of nice to see it all charted out. Yay! For all of the women!! Thoughts? Blog me.
Peace out.
Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. Hi Mischa, hey whatdya know, real peeps are in office, it’s about time some old white haired dudes stepped off…I was getting tired of listening (long, long ago – while they were busy ‘struggling’ with what rape was and all that female stuff they like to poke their parts at and then want to control) and looking at em’ (women dig their eye candy, too, and the old camp ‘let themselves go’ so not much cooking there either)…
Key words in any affair/’cheating’ sitch is surreptitious and discretion and if I have to find out about your private info in the public domain then you are a dumb ass. Plain and simple. I am very interested in why Anonz chose to weave a web this way, any insight on that, MikeTM, curious minds need to know…bc in the words of Roosevelt, ‘In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.’ Is there a personal/professional vendetta w/Patreuas? There could be many ways Anonz could’ve screwed around with the repugs, why this way?
If you don’t know or cannot disclose, I’ll just keep watching the fallout…
If you do know and can disclose, I would appreciate that. Thanks.
Misch, all good here…I’m ready for an escape to Bali (or Guam!), I’m also ready for an offline chat if you have time this week or next…
Larry, one word for Madrid and I have not been there: Goudi : )
Irene, (I think, forgive me if name is incorrect), although the sanctity of marriage is what you were upholding I think…the fact is that marriage can last a long time and I’m not convinced that we are monogamous beings at heart and so you can ask all parties to suppress natural and biological urges and live a life of quiet desperation or you can have an ‘agreement’ (if you’re an honest person, honesty is the best policy, you can decide just how many details either of you want to or should disclose if any, often – at least in my experience, right after I mentioned that I was crushing on someone else, the charge diminished, though it did not go away entirely…) bc as another commenter mentioned, we love our facade of fidelity and then we have a 50% divorce rate, (although if you research that, most US divorces are not about sexual fidelity). I’m not saying I like the idea of ‘cheating’ but we have an over 50% rate of doing it (men & women) during the course of a lifetime with one person. I know people who consider nominal things ‘cheating’ things that to me it sound like ball’n'chain confinement, who wants to be controlled that way?
I could be wrong on all of the above and I can always rest assured that if someone thinks I am, they will bc you know I can take it.
Where’s Alycedale been? I miss the fiery AD and RobertRt as well…

John McCain is liar and a sore loser. He’s an angry man who can’t accept that he lost and so did his candidate successor. Are u listening JOHN – your party is out of touch with the American voter…
that’s why u lost and the GOP will continue to lose if people like you appear before the cameras to spew hatred and negativity instead of ideas on working together for the good of the country.
McCain doesn’t care about anyone about himself – that’s why HE continues to be a loser.

I saw this in Huff post. will they ever quit?

Jim Wallis: The New Evangelical Agenda
Christian leader for social change
If demographics changed this election, they have also now changed the meaning of the term “evangelical.” Religious right leaders like Ralph Reed, Franklin Graham and Tony Perkins did everything they could to turn evangelicals to Romney, especially in the final run-up to the election.
Their efforts to turn concerns about abortion and gay marriage into partisan arguments for a Republican victory — and to threaten dangerous consequences of a Democratic win — were, by their own estimates, the most extensive ever.
But they failed and didn’t change the outcome of the election. The ironic and tragic thing about the religious right is how little of their own agenda they have achieved.
And by voting for a conservative ideological agenda, they have actually hurt the poor, resisted immigration reform, promoted endless wars and neglected the environment.

I remember when McCain was a very respected senator — on both sides of the aisle. Now he is a grumpy, resentful old man who can’t understand why he lost the election. And I think he has a lot of guts complaining about Susan Rice when he selected the extremely intelligent (?) thoughtful (?) wise (?) Sarah Palin!

When evangelicals decided to become politicians they lost their way. They became corrupt.
Give unto Caesar that which is Caesars. The point is don’t get involved in government but instead stay connected to G_ds plan and be like Jesus helping the poor and the sick.
When Christians do good deeds they are strong. When they sink down to the level of DC they are becoming like Caesar.

White right wing evangelicals have lost sight of the compassionate side of what it means to be a Christian. Their hate-filled message doesn’t resonate with too many people.
These people have done a lot of damage to the poor, the homeless, and the
hungry.

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me.
Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them. …..
The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom…. I’m frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D.’ Just who do they think they are?… I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of “conservatism.”

If no one else will say it, I will: this guy, the Admiral’s son, was something of a f**kup as a Naval Aviator. He crashed several airplanes in “mishaps,” had quite a few write-ups in his file, and was not so highly-regarded by his comrades.
Which, as someone who’s known a few Naval Aviators myself, is quite an accomplishment. But he was the Admiral’s son. He dealt with his capture and captivity better than I can imagine myself doing in similar circumstances, there’s no denying that.
But this guy has built his career in politics on the fact that he got shot down and survived his POW ordeal.
How does getting shot down qualify someone for elected office?
If McCain is our guide, not very well.

The religious right are not now, nor have they ever been a Christian affiliation.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
These are values that the religious right condemn.

Franklin Graham did his best on Morning Joe.
“Obama SAYS HE’S A CHRISTIAN…I TAKE HIS WORD FOR IT”
& proceeded to imply, as only a conartist supreme could, that Obama
was a closet Muslim. (Joe Scar was *absent that day*)
The younger co-host & others went after Pastor Rev. Graham the younger
again and again making things very uncomfortable for him
and for right wing propaganda posing as theocratic deep thought.

“the authority of the Bible?” I hope Mr. Wallis was kidding when he said that. Because that is the central problem – people basing their politics on their interpretation of the “authority of the Bible.”
From history and current affairs, we know that people “of faith” have been able to pick passages of the Bible to defend slavery and the like …. as well as assisting the poor.
My suggestion is rather than rely on “authorities” outside the human sphere, let us all be humanists: providing human solutions to human problems without the baggage of artificial differentiation introduced by theology.

Only the most die-hard haters of the Evangelical movement voted for Romney. The way to fix this is simple. Control your operatives. Order them to step-down on the vitriol, the hate.
President Obama won because of his cautious reasoning, not his knee-jerk Bible passages. The right tends to knee-jerk too much. Those flippant response do not and will not attract anyone who has not already imbibed the kool-aid.
So now take my response and crumble it up in a ball and throw it in the trash. Nothing will change and barring a catastrophe, another Democrat will be elected next time.

From Billy Graham’s Wikipedia article:
“He refused to join Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority in 1979, saying: ‘I’m for morality, but morality goes beyond sex to human freedom and social justice.
We as clergy know so very little to speak with authority on the Panama Canal or superiority of armaments. Evangelists cannot be closely identified with any particular party or person.
We have to stand in the middle in order to preach to all people, right and left. I haven’t been faithful to my own advice in the past. I will be in the future.’” Sadly he wasn’t.
