“Time To Profile White Men?”

Good morning!

Thanks for all of the Christmas wishes – I HOPE all of you enjoyed the holiday too.

I too am saddened and upset about the shooting of the firemen – men whose jobs are to save others, were now targeted by a man who does what “he likes doing best – killing people.” I feel like lately all I’m doing is blogging about bad things and continually sending good wishes to the families of victims killed in horrific acts. Really…when is all of this killing going to be enough? When are we finally going to do something to help stop this madness?

I read your comments. I too read and heard Sirota’s comments on CNN, and I agree with him. In case some of you are wondering and haven’t read the write, here it is:

Salon’s David Sirota To Don Lemon: If Majority Of Mass Shooters Wasn’t White, ‘Conversation Would Be Much Uglier’ (VIDEO)

Salon writer David Sirota appeared on Don Lemon’s CNN show on Saturday to discuss that the majority of mass shooters in the United States have been white.

In Sirota’s recent article titled “Time To Profile White Men?” the Salon writer argued that nuanced conversations that grew out of the tragic Newtown shootings on mental health and gun control is due to the race of the shooter.

He wrote, “But the point here is that those tempered and nuanced conversations are only able to happen because the demographic at the center of it all is white guys.”

Speaking with CNN’s Don Lemon, Sirota said, “I think we should ask the question why is America 30 percent white guys, and 70 percent of the shootings in the last many decades have been at the hands of white guys … I do think it’s interesting to note that had 70 percent of mass shooters been let’s say Arab or African-American men, I think the conversation would be … much uglier.”

Lemon summarized one of the points Sirota made in his recent article. “If the suspect or the shooter was a black male [he'd be labeled as a] thug; Muslim, [a] terrorist,” Lemon said.

“Yeah,” Sirota said. “And and I think that it’s good we’re having a nuanced conversation about all sorts of things — mental illness, gun control — but I hope that the next time something bad happens … that if it’s not a white guy, that we remember that we shouldn’t ascribe to entire groups … the bad actions of individuals. Because we’re not doing that right now, and I’m not saying that we should, but I think we should remember that the reason we’re not, is because it’s a form of white privilege.”

Readers: Did you click over to Sirota’s recent article “Time to Profile White Men?”. If not I thought I would make it easy for you. Here’s the write:

Time to profile white men?

Yesterday, during a cable news discussion of gun violence and the Newtown school shooting, I dared mention a taboo truism. During a conversation on MSNBC’s “Up With Chris Hayes,” I said that because most of the mass shootings in America come at the hands of white men, there would likely be political opposition to initiatives that propose to use those facts to profile the demographic group to which these killers belong. I suggested that’s the case because as opposed to people of color or, say, Muslims, white men as a subgroup are in such a privileged position in our society that they are the one group that our political system avoids demographically profiling or analytically aggregating in any real way. Indeed, unlike other demographic, white guys as a group are never thought to be an acceptable topic for any kind of critical discussion whatsoever, even when there is ample reason to open up such a discussion.

My comment was in response to U.S. Rep. James Langevin (D) floating the idea of employing the Secret Service for such profiling, and I theorized that because the profiling would inherently target white guys, the political response to such an idea might be similar to the Republican response to the 2009 Homeland Security report looking, in part, at the threat of right-wing terrorism. As you might recall, the same GOP that openly supportsprofiling — and demonizing — Muslims essentially claimed that the DHS report was unacceptable because its focus on white male terrorist groups allegedly stereotyped (read: offensively profiled) conservatives.

For making this point, I quickly became the day’s villain in the right-wing media. From the Daily Caller, to Fox News, to Breitbart, to Glenn Beck’s the Blaze, to all the right-wing blogs and Twitter feeds that echo those outlets’ agitprop, I was attacked for “injecting divisive racial politics” into the post-Newtown discussion (this is a particularly ironic attack coming from Breitbart – the same website that manufactured the Shirley Sherrod fiasco).

The conservative response to my statement, though, is the real news here.

Let’s review: Any honest observer should be able to admit that if the gunmen in these mass shootings mostly had, say, Muslim names or were mostly, say, African-American men, the country right now wouldn’t be confused about the causes of the violence, and wouldn’t be asking broad questions. There would probably be few queries or calls for reflection, and mostly definitive declarations blaming the bloodshed squarely on Islamic fundamentalism or black nationalism, respectively. Additionally, we would almost certainly hear demands that the government intensify the extant profiling systems already aimed at those groups.

Yet, because the the perpetrators in question in these shootings are white men and not ethnic or religious minorities, nobody is talking about demographic profiling them as a group. The discussion, instead, revolves around everything from gun control, to mental health services, to violence in entertainment — everything, that is, except trying to understanding why the composite of these killers is so similar across so many different massacres. This, even though there are plenty of reasons for that topic to be at least a part of the conversation.

Recounting the truth of these double standards is, of course, boringly mundane, which means my comment on television summarizing them is an equally boring and mundane statement of the obvious. However, as evidenced by the aggressive attempt to turn those comments into controversial headline-grabbing news over the weekend, the conservative movement has exposed its desperation — specifically, its desperation to preserve its White Victimization Mythology.

In this mythology, the white man as a single demographic subgroup can never be seen as a perpetrator and must always be portrayed as the unfairly persecuted scapegoat. In this mythology, to even reference an undeniable truth about how white privilege operates on a political level (in this case, to prevent a government profiling system of potential security threats even though such a system exists for other groups) is to be guilty of both “injecting divisive racial politics” and somehow painting one’s “opponents as racist” — even when nobody called any individual a racist.

In this mythology, in short, to mention truths about societal double standards — truths that are inconvenient or embarrassing to white people — is to be targeted for attack by the right-wing media machine.

Of course, just as I didn’t make such an argument yesterday on MSNBC, I’m not right now arguing for a system of demographically profiling white guys as a means of stopping mass murderers (that’s right, the headline at Beck’s website, the Blaze, is categorically lying by insisting I did make such an argument, when the MSNBC video proves that’s not even close to true). After all, broad demographic profiling is not only grotesquely bigoted in how it unduly stereotypes whole groups, it also doesn’t actually work as a security measure and runs the risk of becoming yet another Big Brother-ish monster (this is especially true when a lawmaker is forwarding the idea of deploying a quasi-military apparatus like the Secret Service).

Additionally, I’m not saying we should avoid the complex discussion about myriad issues (gun control, mental health, violence in Hollywood products, etc.) that we are having in the aftermath of the Connecticut tragedy. On the contrary, I believe it is good news that those nuanced conversations — rather than simplistic calls for punitive measures against a demographic group — are able to happen, and it’s particularly good news that they are persisting in the face of pro-gun extremists’ best effort to polarize the conversation.

But the point here is that those tempered and nuanced conversations are only able to happen because the demographic at the center of it all is white guys. That is the one group in America that gets to avoid being referred to in aggregate negative terms (and gets to avoid being unduly profiled by this nation’s security apparatus), which means we are defaulting to a much more dispassionate and sane conversation — one that treats the perpetrators as deranged individuals, rather than typical and thus stereotype-justifying representatives of an entire demographic.

While such fair treatment should be the norm for all citizens, the double standard at work makes clear it is still a special privilege for a select white few. That’s the issue at the heart of my comment on MSNBC — and it is a pressing problem no matter how much the conservative media machine wants to pretend it isn’t.

******

Should that question even be a question? Look at the stats of white men killing. If other races are “profiled”, shouldn’t white men be “profiled” too? Thoughts? Blog me.

  1. John Says:

Well, in a sense, straight white males aged 18 to 65 have been profiled. They are the only “unprotected” group in the country.

  2. John Says:

John, typical bullshit from a white boy. If you give me your hand{ first hired, last fired; the drugs you do get less mandatory years; your race commits the most crimes, yet there are much less in prison; never have to worry about being asked “what country are you from?”; can hail a cab in any city; never have to worry that your neighborhood is being secretly redlined by lending institutions; Never needing to worry if you are too dark for a part or job; Never having to fear the red lights of some racist cop in your own city; Never having to fear what part of the country you are in because you may be in one of those “conservative” pockets of the country where OTWs aren’t tolerated; always having the right to complain about being discriminated against}.

Yeah, your race is so under protected.

  3. Mark Says:

Since 2001, about 2,000 American service men and women have died in Afghanistan; in that same time period, 5,000 people have died in Chicago.

SO! the liberals et al wanna profile white men – yet the aforementioned facts/statics get avoided or ignored entirely.

So now that the POOLICE are gonna concentrate on white men – YELP! that scenario sure makes a lot of sense – I’ve given up – black people are determined to destroy America for what they think it should be – because they live by another set of rules & that sadly allows them to hide behind there skin color, combine that with the plethora of media sources protecting them against any and most criticism.

The next 4 years can’t go by quick enough for me – maybe I won’t live that long (my bluntness could/might be my downfall )

  4. Anonymous Says:

Heres a brief profile of the white male-

    clean,orderly and law abiding
kind to women, children and animals.
    believes in fairness and truth

works to take care of himself and his obligations, feels nothing is owed to him and deserves only that which he has produced himself.

innovative.constantly seeking to advance his life in a direction of higher value.

    independent, and self reliant
believes himself to be part of something much larger than himself and believes it to be good.

  5. Drew Says:

Lol white people would never stand for that. They’re still the ones in power so they control the narrative.

I don’t mean to take anything away from Sandy Hook because it was a horrific, obscene crime against humanity, but would we have heard about it if it happened in a poor urban community with high diversity?

It’ll be years before racial profiling comes to an end, but I guarantee that while it’s around it will never be against white people.

  6. Young Says:

What I dont understand is why we arent focusing more on Lanza’s mom. I’m a gun owner, I have a safe (expensive as hell), keep the ammo in seperate places and only my father knows either combo.

The question is, would you teach your mentally unstable child how to use these weapons? I know he tells me I am, but in all honesty My father would have me no where near our firearms if he knew I wasnt capable of safely handling them.

Every gun owner knows safety is the first three rules of ownership. Lets start profiling irresponsible gun owners. this isnt a race thing.

  7. Noomi Says:

Hey, if people are okay with profiling Muslims because they are more likely to commit acts of terrorism, then they should be okay with profiling white men to prevent mass shootings

  8. Marlene Says:

It will take more than the slaughter of those poor.children before they ever think.of profiling white males.

Think about that. It can’t get worse than killing children but that won’t do it. nope, not white males.

  9. Lois Says:

I won’t respond directly to the posts here as the numbers in the Legislative Houses of both the State and Federal governments say loud and clear who is in charge in this country.

But I think “white privilege” is one of those things, not unlike sexism, where many can’t believe it exists or even perceive of such a thing if they don’t experience it personally.

It’s like trying to explain the ocean to someone who’s lived their entire life in a landlocked country with no exposure to the outside world.

  10. Kevin Says:

As a White man, I say FUCK YOU, if you don’t like the way we white men run this ship.

Get the fuck out of our country, if we bother you.

  11. Steve Says:

As for profiling white men, Head hunters for corporations, the republican party, Bankers and Wall Street already beat you to it.

  12. Gwen Says:

White men never take responsibility for their actions. But they are oh, so quick to profile another race for the actions of one of theirs.

  13. LLoyd Says:

it may be time to start considering the profiling of black men as part of larger criminal response tactics, as legit.

  14. George Says:

This is just another one of the racist, gay, black chicks anti white ideas.

  15. Carlos Says:

Yeah, not unlike the many racist, bigoted anti-OTW acts we have to live with as a part of our every day existence in the USA.

  16. Health Info Says:

    The Healing Power of Animals

Research uncovers therapeutic effects for heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and more.

We’ve all seen those highly trained, four-legged helpers assist a blind person in navigating a street crossing.

    What’s new:
Scientists now are discovering that dogs and other types of animals can actually help promote the healing process in people with a wide range of medical conditions. Sound far-fetched?

While cozying up to an adoring family pet is widely known to have psychological benefits, popular domestic animals, including dogs and cats, are now helping in a different way. They are playing an important role in the treatment plans for stroke patients and others with such conditions as heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition, patients who have cancer, mental-health problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, and individuals with chronic pain have been shown to benefit from treatment that involves the use of animals.

So-called animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is also increasingly incorporating an even broader range of animals. For example, horseback riding is being used by people with health problems such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Even rabbits, llamas, birds and other types of animals are being used to promote physical, emotional and social well-being.

    WHY IT HELPS
Support for the therapeutic effects of animals continues to grow…
Landmark findings: Among 92 patients hospitalized for a heart condition or heart attack, only 6% of pet (mostly dog) owners died within one year of discharge, versus 28% of people who did not own pets.

In a study of 48 New York City stockbrokers, those who owned a dog or a cat had half the increase in blood pressure associated with stressful situations as those without pets.

More recently, research focusing specifically on AAT suggests that interacting with animals may have salutary effects because it increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, which is believed to have powerful effects on the body’s ability to heal and grow new cells.

    HOW IT WORKS
With AAT, the animals are not there to simply play with the patients. Instead, the animal, whose temperament has been evaluated by a national animal therapy organization, helps a patient achieve specific treatment goals.

For example, a physical therapist may use a dog (owned by a volunteer who has participated in training or, in some cases, the facility where the therapy takes place) to help a stroke patient regain the ability to stand and walk.

The stroke patient may walk the dog for short distances (the dog owner may use a double-handle leash to accompany the dog and patient).

For people with physical disabilities due to conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease, horseback riding can help strengthen muscles in the trunk and loosen contracted joints.

AAT can help reduce agitation and depression in Alzheimer’s patients, and it can curb a cancer patient’s perception of pain and fatigue.

Patients who have AAT receive individualized treatment plans with the animal…sessions are scheduled at set intervals…and the health-care provider makes notes on the progress that is made by the patient during each session. In some cases, AAT may be covered as part of a physical therapy program.

    GETTING STARTED
If you would like to try AAT, speak to your doctor. If he/she gives you the go-ahead, contact Pet Partners (formerly Delta Society), 425-679-5500, http://www.PetPartners.org. This nonprofit organization, which registers therapy animals and their owners, can help you locate a facility that offers AAT.

People who are not able to leave their homes may also receive AAT. A family member or health-care provider should contact Pet Partners for a referral to a trained animal owner who provides AAT on a volunteer basis. In these instances, therapy visits should be arranged and overseen by a home health-care provider.

    Important:
If you have reduced immunity—for example, due to an autoimmune disease or if you are on chemotherapy, high-dose steroids or other immune-suppressive- medications—AAT may not be appropriate for you.

Animals that participate in AAT are required to be clean and well groomed and must undergo a thorough veterinary checkup. However, patients with reduced immunity often are advised to limit unnecessary contact with animals—and humans—to help them avoid exposure to infectious agents.

This may be off topic but it has been festering in my mind. I mean about the tossing of Susan Rice under the bus. I copy every thing Howie says about aliens and read it several times. Often I go back over what he has posted to check for consistency and accuracy.

He never fails to meet my test for either. So when he mentioned the lost of Quu’s support because of Obama tossing Susan Rice for Secretary of State, I went back to check some of the comments during that time.

I was especially perturbed by the interview Soledad O’Brien had with Rep. Joe Heck on Susan Rice. Although O’Brien is a gifted reporter and journalist she is clearly unable to understand republican pycho-babble speak.

She should have asked John Mccain to translate. Sorry he is busy trying with all his small mind to prevent himself from being religated to the pile of political has – been’s.

Howie, is often castigated for his input by those who feel one way or the other about the “when, why, or how” of his inputs. Why attempt to kill the messenger, it is the message that needs to be addressed.

Thanks Howie for all you do. I am sure you have legions of silent but loyal fans. This is my first post about you but I have been following you for more that two years.

    Happy New Year
    Ester

  18. Thomas Says:

To understand the conservative reaction, you have to go back to the 19th century commonplace that “This is a white man’s country.” Or “This country was made for white men.”

White men shouldn’t be profiled because this country is THEIRS, so by definition they can’t be a problem. Real white men, by the way, will generally be Anglo-Saxon or at least Protestants, so it’s not clear Scalia or any catholic, or mormon would have made the cut before 1930.

  19. Gwen Says:

OMG, Michelle are you suggesting to a white boy that he should be profiled? . . .

It’s like some sort of reverse Penthouse when these guys get frightened that they will be treated the same way they want others to be treated, they will come up with all sorts of crazy logic or attacks on OTWs. . . “I never thought it would happen to me!”

When I showed this blog topic to my father, he called you ever foul name he could utter, beginning with N***er Lover. Oh, how they want to believe they are the beleaguered race.

Daddy, I said you white guys still own almost every seat in the Senate white male wise and certainly every one but one race wise. He scoured and said who knowns who among them might be jews or bitches like that one who sucks N***er dicks.

This mouth to his 23 year old daughter from the deacon of our church. He is the perfect example of the Southern “Gentleman.” They love their women when they obey and always expects their OTWs to under penalty of assault or death.

Love your blog. It levels the field for me.

    Gwen

  20. Kate Says:

    Thomas/#18 – Perfectly Correct.

However, if you keep arguing with some of these White conservatives, sooner or later, they’ll blurt out, “Well, we don’t DESERVE to be profiled! We did more for this country than those Blacks or Muslims or Asians!”

In the end, it’s about having a special place at the top of the pyramid.

  21. George, WN Says:

I don’t want to live with niggers, jews, wet backs, camel niggers, spicks, muslims, slopes or mud people. They keep migrating to wherever white men live. Remember that.

There wouldn’t be any problem if slimeballs such as you nigger lovers and half breeds, would accept that fact.

This is a note to you breeds. Count yourselves lucky that a white man married whatever inferior race your mother was and respect the white race of your father. Don’t insult it by claiming to be one. You are mud people.

If you can pass, don’t insult us as the jew does by passing as if he is white. Give deference to your betters. “Profiling white men,” indeed. Fuck you!

    George, WN

  22. Alycedale Says:

George WN#21 That’s almost funny, because you have it exactly backwards:

White men keep migrating to wherever brown and black men live. You brought your genocidal asses to the Americas and murdered 12 million American Indians. The rest you put in to concentration camps. Just because you call the “Reservations” doesn’t alter the death and degradation you have imposed from their incarceration there.

Your race wiped out entire races through out the western hemisphere from North to South America. Hundreds of millions of peoples have perished at the hands of your “migrations” to wherever Brown or Black people live.

Follow the Islands anywhere in the world, your race has exterminated entire populations and transplanted African slaves there to do your bidding. There are no peoples indigenous from Haiti to Mexico because your race was prone to killing all the men on those islands or lands and raping or bringing other OTW men to do it for you.

You race has “migrated” to and claimed Marianas Islands(USA); Norfolk Islands(Australia) Shall we discuss how those white murderers massacred tens of millions of aborigines in an attempt towards total genocide of that race to steal the largest Island nation in the world?

Lord Howe Island(Australia); New Caledonia(France); New Zeland(another place where history is silent to the genocide of an entire race for the benefit of your race’s “migration” to where Brown and Black men live.

Pitcairn Islands(United Kingdom) The british are still signally the most prolific mass genocidal murders in history. They have murdered hundreds of millions of OTWs for loot or pleasure. Samoa(USA); It goes on and on.

Remember that. There wouldn’t be any problem if white men would stay where they are, and stop stealing other people’s countries.

  23. Frank Says:

This can be solved in one single action; all those who don’t like white males, stop living among us. Stop immigrating to nations founded and developed by white men, or nations indigenous to white men.

Stop moving to our neighbourhoods and cities we founded and developed. Believe me, we will not miss you “OTWS”, Muslim fanatics and overweight white females.

The left has profiled white men for decades. In the leftist world, we’re responsible for every evil perpetrated on earth while being, at the same time stupid, hapless, abusive, not very astute, can’t jump, can’t dance, chicken hawks, buy large trucks and such to make up for certain inadequacies, got where they are because they’re white, on and on.

If I thought about it, I could come up with a lot more predictable profiles the left (like tiny penis) has developed about white men. So Michelle, for these buffoons to be floating that trial balloon is absurd at best. It’s been going on a long time.

Oh! And I believe under the fool napolitano, the homeland security agency is profiling white men as I type.

  24. Robert, RT Says:

Kudos, Alycedale. It is amazing how freely whites distort history. The white race’s choice of words to manipulate the emotional response to the evils they have visited upon OTWs is legendary. The Germans sent Jews to concentration camps; white America took away the rights of Japanese americans without due process the same way but they were sent to “relocation” camps.

All you white men claiming America as “your” county. HELLO! I’m not sure where you are indigenous, but it is NOT the USA. Oh, and you did not “found” this nation. It was NEVER lost. If you don’t like living among OTWs, go back to your white country. That would, I presume, be England or northern Europe. Or the Caucasus?

Get out of Africa and Asia, get out of the Americas and go back to your ratty homeland, wherever it is. But if you choose to stay and your race continues to perpetrate violence by murdering women and children or by making guns and assault weapons readily available to our OTW youth, be prepared to be PROFILED.

    Robert, rt

  25. Clark Says:

The irony of all this is that young white males like myself now see what the left really think of us, and our culture and civilization. Thanks Obama. You brought out the leftist nutters with your presidency and we will not forget.

America was once 90 per cent white. It WAS a white man’s nation until the Quisling jews (Mr Sirota is a former member of AIPAC) took hold of this land and like a rat, began to spread their anti-white plague.

The Germans had the right idea. If only the west had waited until they had completed it.

  26. Bert Says:

The US WAS made as a nation, by white men FOR white men. White women and anyone else are here at our leisure. Unfortunately Bolshevik jews like Sirota have been at our education system for the past few decades, destroying the meaning of being an AMERICAN.

As a white male, I love what is going on. America is more racially divided than ever before. The Obama nigger administration has brought out the true feelings of blacks and the left, toward white men, and an entire generation of young white males like myself, are witness to this outpouring of anti-white male hatred and scorn.

You guys have done more to stoke white nationalism than David Duke could have ever done! So thanks.

P.S. I have nothing against being racially profiled, so long as you stop whining about your precious Muslim fanatics being stopped at airports before they blow up an airliner, and the 6 per cent of the population that commit 48 per cent of all interracial violent crime are stopped on the streets in order to make sure they are not armed.

  27. Stan Says:

Me, I love watching those niggers get lynched in ‘Mississippi Burning’. Great film. Lots of dead niggers hahahaha!!!!!!

  28. Perry Says:

As you know, the white man’s burden was always optional and borne only out of the goodness of the white man’s great heart.

  29. Gary Says:

Michelle, Please, stop this self-righteous progressive Cultural Marxist argument about tearing down white men.

Just because you are white this does not give you the right to pass on this bile to others by allowing these anti white posts.

I for one, will say that I am not ashamed to be white, or a male, or heterosexual. As a matter of fact, I am happy with what I am, not because I am a white male, but because this is what I am. I do not become indoctrinated by statist mantras, I guess.

And I am saying this as someone who lives in a foreign country who is one of the very few white people around here and is engaged to a pretty non-White young lady (I am not even attracted to white women that much, nor do I like hanging out with white people who live here.) If people here started talking like you, I know I would be in pretty big trouble, wouldn’t I?

This kind of crap enables people to become more divisive.

Robert,RT, your comments on profiling do not help any one, no, not even minorities. By suggesting or hinting at a certain group should be profiled, you are only promoting a police state that is capable of integrated profiling of all of its citizens.

It is progressive statism at its worst, and I, for one, will not stand for it nor will I feel ashamed for being a white male.

  30. Ingrid Says:

I am a white woman married to a black man here in Norway. I lived in America for 11 years. I know a little American history. Enough to know that those of you claiming the USA as once a white man’s country are liars.

America was once a brown people’s country until the quisling whites who couldn’t get along in their own country came over and stole it from its rightful owners. Go back to wherever you came from. If they’ll even have you.

  31. Charles Says:

“Teachers stand up to gunmen, but Congress won’t stand up to the NRA.”
That’s what one of the signs read when hundreds of people joined CREDO’s
Emergency March on the NRA in Washington, DC.

After the shooter Adam Lanza, no one is more to blame for the massacre of
20 first graders and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School than
the National Rifle Association. In order to stop the senseless killing we
    must first stop the NRA.

The National Rifle Association is a powerful lobby that pretends to
represent gun owners. But in reality, it represents the deadly interests
of arms dealers and gun manufacturers. And it has been astonishingly
successful at blocking regulations that would keep our children safe from
    gun violence.

Tell the NRA to stand down, and allow Congress and the President to pass
    gun control legislation.
