Good morning!

When I meet with a client for the first time I always ask them if they have any style icons. Brought up more often than others, Barack and Michelle Obama are mentioned. It always brings a smile to my face because I think they both have killer style.  They both exude feeling so good and comfortable in their skin. And together they are a stunning couple. Here’s one of my faves:

But looks aren’t everything, and Michelle Obama as we all know has so much more to offer than just eye candy. She is truly an iconic FLOTUS in so many ways. Her strength, and character, intelligence, and warm sensibilities continually shines and graces us.

I was perusing the Huff Po front page and decided check in on the Women’s section. And there I discovered today is the First Lady’s 49th birthday. Perfect. I was questioning what I wanted to blog today, and when I clicked over to the women’s section, there was my answer.

Michelle Obama’s Birthday: FLOTUS Turns 49, A Look Back At Her Pre-White House Style (PHOTOS)

Happy 49th Birthday, Michelle Obama!

It goes without saying that we’re huge fans of Michelle Obama around these parts. What’s not to love? She super smart, a great mom, loving wife and can dress her tush off. (And let’s not forget she knows how to Dougie)

We’ve followed her every fashionable move over the past four years and we’re thrilled for the opportunity to do it again as she embarks on her next term as Commander-in-Chic.

But let’s take a moment to look back at Michelle’s path to stealing our hearts and rise to style icon. Being the social media savvy folks that we are, it only seemed right to dedicate a #TBT (aka Throwback Thursday) post to our lovely FLOTUS.

So, in celebration of Michelle’s 49th birthday, we’ve handpicked our favorite images from before she stepped foot in the White House–further proof that she definitely had the style, grace and so much more to be our First Lady. Enjoy!

Ugh…I can’t seem to post the video. Click on the title if you would like to see it as well as a slideshow of Michelle Obama’s fashion over the years.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHELLE OBAMA!!

Readers: I just had to borrow that term “Commander-in-Chic” for my blog title from the author. Love it. And for you fashionistas, if you didn’t click over to the write, I suggest you do. The author Mikki Taylor taps a great write, and in my opinion as a stylist, nails it on Michelle Obama’s style, as well as her great style tips. Kudos to Taylor.

Howie, Zen Lill: Seeing only just the both of you in the comments section makes me feel a bit nostalgic – like the old days when I first started blogging. :) Howie, thanks for continuing the chronicles of FDR (fascinating), and for your two.

Blog me.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Gratefully your blog host,

Rev Up Your Immunity to Fight Colds, Flu and Pneumonia All Winter Long

Colds are potentially more dangerous than most people realize. That’s because they often weaken an already compromised immune system, making the sufferer more vulnerable to the flu and pneumonia.

A nutritional deficiency is the most common cause of depressed immunity, but even people who make a point to eat a well-balanced diet often fall short when it comes to getting enough key nutrients. For this reason, many Americans turn to dietary supplements for extra protection.

    But which ones really work?

For answers, Bottom Line/Health spoke to Michael T. Murray, ND, a leading naturopathic physician who has spent more than 30 years compiling a database of more than 60,000 scientific articles on the effectiveness of natural medicines, including supplements.

Here are some of the most effective supplements for preventing and treating colds and related upper-respiratory ailments. Start with the first supplement and add others (all are available at health-food stores), based on specific symptoms…*

Mixed antioxidants. When it comes to fortifying your body to fight off colds, it’s wise to start with a high-potency multisupplement. I recommend one that combines zinc, selenium, beta-carotene (or other carotenes) and vitamins C and E.

This antioxidant mix helps prevent oxidative damage to the thymus gland—a robust thymus is needed to produce T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that recognizes and attacks viruses and other infectious agents.

Typical daily dose: 20 mg to 30 mg zinc…200 micrograms (mcg) selenium…25,000 international units (IU) beta-carotene…500 mg vitamin C…and 200 IU vitamin E. You’ll find roughly these amounts in any high-potency multisupplement. Many people take a multi-supplement year-round.

Astragalus. Few Americans know about this herb, although it’s a standard treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is getting more attention these days because scientists have learned that it contains polysaccharide fraction F3 and other substances that stimulate different parts of the immune system.

Test-tube and animal studies have found that astragalus has potent antiviral effects—important for preventing colds and the flu. In one study, 115 patients who took the herb for eight weeks showed significant improvement in their counts of infection-fighting white blood cells.

Typical daily dose: 100 mg to 150 mg of powdered extract combined with any liquid, three times daily, whenever you have a cold or the flu or throughout the winter months if your immunity is low (for example, due to extra stress).

    Caution:
If you have rheumatoid arthritis or some other autoimmune disease, use astragalus only under a doctor’s supervision—the increase in immune activity could worsen your autoimmune symptoms.

South African geranium. Also known as umckaloabo, this herbal remedy is commonly used for bronchitis, an upper-respiratory infection that often follows colds, particularly in winter.

In a study of 205 patients with bronchitis, those taking it had reduced bronchitis-related symptoms, such as a cough and shortness of breath. Other studies have shown similar effects.

Although doctors who specialize in herbal medicine typically recommend this supplement for patients who have been diagnosed with bronchitis or sinusitis, I advise taking it if you have a cold because it reduces symptoms and helps prevent a secondary bronchial infection.

Typical daily dose: 20 mg, three times daily, until the symptoms subside.

Beta-glucan. This class of compounds is found in baker’s yeast, medicinal mushrooms (such as maitake) and a variety of grains. Supplemental forms have been shown to stimulate the activity of immune cells. They also stimulate immune signaling proteins, which help the body fight viral infections.

In a study of 54 firefighters (who are susceptible to colds because of frequent exposure to smoke and other fumes), those who took a beta-glucan supplement had 23% fewer upper-respiratory infections compared with those who took a placebo.

Typical daily dose: 250 mg to 500 mg daily. This dose is effective for treatment of viral infections as well as prevention (for example, when you feel a cold coming on).

I recommend Wellmune WGP (it contains a substance derived from yeast that has been shown to strengthen immune cells) or Maitake Gold beta-glucan supplements—the research is more solid with these than with other products.

Echinacea. This herb has been the subject of more than 900 studies. A few years ago, researchers reported that it was not effective for colds—probably because these scientists were using products that had insufficient amounts of active compounds. In my experience, echinacea is very effective both for prevention and treatment.

Example: One study, involving 120 patients who had just started to experience cold symptoms, found that only 40% of those taking echinacea went on to develop a full-fledged cold compared with 60% of those not taking the herb.

When patients in the echinacea group did get sick, their symptoms started to improve after four days versus eight days in those taking placebos.

Typical daily dose: One-half to one teaspoon of liquid extract, which can be added to a glass of water or taken straight, three times daily, when you have a cold or feel one coming on.

Buy a product that is made from the fresh aerial portion of the plant. This information will be printed on the label. You will receive a higher concentration of active compounds. People who have allergies to plants in the daisy family (which includes ragweed) should not take echinacea.

ADD A DOSE OF STRESS RELIEF
It’s important to remember that virtually everyone is more likely to get sick during times of stress.

Reasons: Stress increases blood levels of adrenal hormones, which suppress the immune system. In addition, stress triggers the release of cytokines and other substances that decrease the activity of white blood cells and inhibit the formation of new ones.

What to do: In addition to getting regular exercise and sleeping at least seven hours a night, make a habit of doing activities that improve your mood. Deep breathing, meditation or simply having a good time with friends will all help you stay healthier.

    DITCH THE SUGAR!
If you want to stay healthy this winter, cut way back on sugar. This is important because the simple sugars in sweets and sweet beverages (including fruit juices) diminish the ability of lymphocytes to fight off viruses. When you consume sugar, the immune system weakens within just 30 minutes—and it remains in a depressed state for more than five hours.

It’s not clear why sugar has such serious effects on immunity. It’s possible that elevated blood sugar prevents vitamin C from attaching to and entering white blood cells, which makes the immune system less effective.

My advice: Have no more (and preferably less) than 15 g to 20 g of sugar in any three-hour period. Sugar-content information is, of course, found on food labels. A four-ounce glass of fruit juice, for example, will have about 12 g of sugar.

*Consult your doctor before trying these supplements—especially if you have a chronic medical condition and/or take medication.

Some of these remedies may interact with medication. Most supplements need to be taken for at least six weeks to reach their full effect.

Alycedale as much as I want to call you a racist, I, a 43 year old white Man(no boy) has to admit that you are correct. As long as my race has a stranglehold on the laws in this country, it will be a mess.

My sister in Wichita Kansas has died because she couldn’t get an abortion that would have saved her life. Fuck the gutless dems who can’t stand up for a woman’s constitutional right to that service.

    Chuck

  5. Jackie Says:

I am an amateur historian. Your post was riveting. I have never considered that FDR could have been murdered. I was aware that the historical version of what happened that day was a lie.

Your post has provided some interesting possibilities for lapses that definitely exist in the historical accounts.

Thank you for providing new energy in this field.

  6. Karla Says:

Howie, do I have a funny story for you. My uncle who I showed a post you made about a year ago called you a liar and a kook. But yesterday he called me and asked if I had read your comment about FDR.

I said no because I didn’t want him to think I was still reading Michelle’s blog because he threatened to disown me if he heard anything else that woman was concerned with in his house.

To think he admitted he has been not only reading it religiously since I showed it to him, he has been commending on it anonymously.

Well, today he is your biggest supporter because he has been saying for decades that FDR was murdered. He is actually posting your comments on his blog site as proof of his claims over the decades.

So many of our relatives that cowered to him when he put me and Michelle’s blog down are now on the outs. I’m the new best boy in his eyes.

Hello Uncle I know you are reading this.

    Karla(my real name)

  7. Pucci Says:

Susan, You are so right. I count my self lucky to be rewarded with permission to enjoy that part of a woman.

  8. Daniel Says:

Bush was for the assault weapons ban. Ronald Reagan supported the Brady Bill. Yet tiny penis white boys will continue to support assault weapons.

Of course, the other reason this is so powerful is that Obama is black and anything the white boy can do to show disrespect to him they will do.

  9. Lewis Says:

The gun industry controls the NRA. As long as they can make profits they will continue give the likes of #38 million dollars to the NRA.

Most of white america could care less about their children or anyone else if it means sensible laws like making background checks on every gun purchase.

This is a sick race. I work with a bunch the OTWs at the firm are about 11 of 93 employees. It is quite apparent that these people are not afraid that the government is going to take away their guns.

That is an excuse to continue their obsession with guns to make them feel manly in lieu of the small dick label they carry as a race.

I can’t tell you how many times their wives or girlfriends make it perfectly clear they would fuck me at company parties. I find it disgusting that they think I would risk my job just to get some white pussy.

The race as a whole male or female think way too much of the color of their skin.

  10. Peter Says:

Looks like the sick racists are out in force to get the black president.
    ========================

The GOP’s Most Extreme Reactions to Obama’s Commonsense Gun Safety Plan

It’s not just NRA lobbyists that are reacting completely irrationally to the president’s commonsense proposals to prevent gun violence. Matt Drudge likened President Obama to both Hitler and Stalin. But some Republicans are now even going so far as to suggest impeaching the president. Unfortunately, some of them are members of the House and actually have the power to introduce articles of impeachment.

    Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX)
Stockman plans to introduce articles of impeachment, calling Obama’s anti-gun violence efforts “an existential threat to this nation.”

    Rep. Trey Radel (R-FL)
Following Stockman’s lead is Florida Congressman Trey Radel, who said impeachment “should be on the table” and falsely claimed that Obama wants an executive order to “ban guns.”

    Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)
Gohmert, a Tea Party favorite who recently claimed an assault weapons ban would have to include hammers, charged that the president’s action is “illegal” and grounds for impeachment. “The American Revolution was all about fighting such a monarchy — and that is not what the Constitution anticipates. It’s not something a Constitutional president would do,” Gohmert lamented.

Former Attorney General Edwin Meese (R)
Edwin Meese, former Reagan Attorney General and current Heritage Foundation official, is also taking up the call for impeachment. In an interview with Newsmax, Meese claimed Obama may have “really tried to override the Constitution itself.” Congress, he said, would have to take action, “perhaps even to the point of impeachment.”

    Larry Pratt
The head of Gun Owners for America urged Republican lawmakers to stop being “spectators while the country is being torn apart” and impeach Obama. Pratt also attacked all gun safety laws as “the most pagan of paganism” because they assume guns and other “inanimate objects as possessing their own will.”

BOTTOM LINE: A majority of Americans — and gun owners — support sensible gun violence prevention measures. Instead of overheated rhetoric, it’s time for Congress to have a real debate about how we can protect our children and our communities from senseless acts of gun violence.
