Pat Robertson Blames ‘Awful-Looking’ Women For Marital Problems

Pat Robertson said that “awful-looking” women are to blame for a romance-deficient marriages.

It all started when a 17-year-old boy wrote to Maxim magazine asking for advice on how to get his videogame-loving dad to pay more attention to his mom. Robertson decided to offer the teen some advice of his own during a recent episode of the Christian Broadcasting Network’s “700 Club.”

“It may be your mom isn’t as sweet as you think she is,” said the 82-year-old. “She may be kind of hard-nosed.”

Robertson then went on to to say that “awful-looking” women can be to blame for certain marital problems:

A woman came to a preacher that I know, and she was awful looking. I mean, her hair was all torn up and she was overweight and looked terrible, clothes bad and everything. And she said, ‘Oh, Reverend, what can I do? My husband has started to drink.’ And the preacher looked at her and said, ‘Madam, if I was married to you I’d start to drink too.’ We need to cultivate romance, darling! … You always have to keep that spark of love alive. It just isn’t something to just lie there, ‘Well, I’m married to him so he’s got to take me slatternly looking.’ You’ve got to fix yourself up, look pretty.

This is not the first time Robertson has blamed women’s appearances for marital problems.

As Think Progress notes, during a 2010 episode of “The 700 Club,” a caller asked Robertson how to get her husband to stop flirting with other women.

“First thing is you need to make yourself as attractive as possible and don’t hassle him about it,” the Christian televangelist said. “And why is he doing this? Well, he’s doing it because he wants affirmation that he is still a man, that he is attractive — and he gets an affirmation of himself … But you need to not drive him away or start hassling and hounding on him, but make yourself as beautiful as you can, as fun as you can, and say let’s go out here, let’s go there, let’s go to the other thing.”

He has also joked about wife-beating as a means of gaining respect, the New York Daily News notes.

Robertson has been married to his wife, Adelia “Dede,” since 1954.

Readers: “It’s easy to blame the mother!” But of course it is – Pat, you’re so right! Blame the woman. Isn’t the woman always to blame? - Never the man.

Misch, I was wondering when you were going to address this, in fact, as I listened to this on the radio 2 days ago, I laughed out loud thinking you were going to comment that day : )

I have some to say about this and of course, I’m just in from a cool meeting, off to play tennis on this fine afternoon in So Cal so I’ll be back at you later, just wanted to comment in case I am in fact the ‘opener’ of the blog today for whatever reason…open sesame/says a me/whatever…

  2. Lois Says:

roberson is a piece of shit that needs to be smacked. He wouldn’t have a pot to piss in if white women were as dumb as a box of rocks. They contribute heavily to he purse.

  3. Mike, TM Says:

The NRA is making a huge profit by scaring white America into buying guns by telling them that Obama is going to take their guns away.

They are receiving a considerable commission for their part in the unprecedented gun sales going on.

The NRA is geared up to make $100 million in commissions and donations on gun sales this year alone.

Howie, your information about the “murder” of FDR is fascinating. I have assigned a portion of my staff to research the data we have on the death of FDR.

You have raised significant issues about his death that have been a puzzle to those like me for decades.

  4. Jim Says:

I watched the Rachel Maddow show and I was appalled to learn that the republicans are bragging about rigging the election system so that they could still maintain control of the House even though they got 1.1 million less votes for the house positions than the dems.

Michelle, I can’t help but wonder what would have happened had you not loosened Madaline to help.

If you have to cheat to win, it SHOULD tell you there’s something terribly wrong with your agenda and philosophy. Apparently Republicans don’t care so long as they can win. Americans need to wake up to what they’re trying to do and vote them out of office.

  5. Matt Says:

If I were the President when the NRA did that commercial using my children I would have answered the NRA this way.

“Dear NRA: the reason my daughters need armed guards is YOU. Specifically, the fact that YOU have spent the last 4+ years convincing your supporters that I’m Hitler, just waiting for the right moment to emasculate them – oh, pardon me, “take their guns”.

YOU are the ones who’ve been encouraging people to hint that they should start thinking about violent revolution if their candidate doesn’t win. YOU are the ones who have made sure that anybody, no matter how crazy or violent, can buy as many guns and as much ammunition as they want.

In summary, go eat a sack of dicks.”

  6. Gregg Says:

Mike, TM #3 correct again on both counts. The NRA is just a self serving terrorist group.

Howie is the man for ALL things Alien.

  7. Martin Says:

Yea Matt, as if previous presidents children and the grand children DID NOT have some level of security around them. Hypocritical propaganda and fanning the fear mongering flame of division once again.

  8. Ben Says:

Good god that ad just showed how ignorant and out of touch the NRA is. Obviously anyone that believes them can’t be too bright.

  9. Roy Says:

Obama’s children are “protected” by a highly trained group of people…probably the best trained in this type of work….soooooo why would THEY (Secret Service) need more than “7 bullets” to get the job done…..also, why would they need TRUELY automatic weapons to get the job done…

oh, wait…these are the “special” people that desire BETTER than their “subjects”

  10. Diane Says:

    Matt, I couldn’t agree more.

  11. Tom Says:

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” the narrator of that offensive ad asked.
    ______________________________

No. But they’re one hell of a lot more vulnerable to violence.

  12. Michael Says:

NRA member, not a terrorist. If by self serving you mean protecting the second amendment based its original intent, then wow, there are quite a few ‘self serving terrorist’ groups in this country.

  13. Lucy Says:

The Secret Service has been around since 1901! Apparently, Roy missed that in his ‘EXTENSIVE RESEARCH’ into HOW the US Gov. TRULY works….it’s people like him that ensure the President has a Security Detail! But then, people who are ‘legends in their own minds’ think it’s ALL ‘about them!’

  14. Health Info Says:

How to Stay Out of a Nursing Home

Most people I know are adamant that they want to stay in their homes as long as possible as they grow older. The good news is that there are now many affordable—and sometimes surprising alternatives to nursing homes. Best approaches…

Use new technology to stay at home. Innovative technological solutions now allow many people to remain independent. For example, you can now buy home medication-dispensing devices that store all your pills, unlock when it’s time to take them and alert you with a signal at pill time.

These devices are even wired to a remote command center that will call you or a relative if you miss just one dose! In addition, home-care agencies can set up devices (with sensors worn by the patient) for daily monitoring of blood pressure and body temperature.

Recent development: Medicare has just agreed to cover many such home services for people who otherwise would be placed in a more costly nursing home.

    Try a “granny apartment.”
That’s what today’s so-called accessory dwelling units (ADUs) were called years ago. An ADU (fully equipped with bathroom and kitchen) is a one-room, freestanding house or a small addition to a relative’s home.

    Latest development:
Years ago, zoning laws in most communities put major restrictions on these units, but that has now changed in many areas. A friend of mine built an addition onto her house (for $65,000—less than the cost of a year in a nursing home) for her mother who had Alzheimer’s disease.

Her mother lived there until her death eight years later with the costs mostly covered by her Social Security payments, her small savings and Medicare (with a Medigap supplemental policy). My friend also used community services, including adult day care and occasional in-home caregiving aides.

To learn more about such community services, consult the Administration on Aging’s resources Web site, http://www.eldercare.gov, or call 800-677-1116.

    Consider “campus” living.
It may not be quite as much fun as a college campus, but assisted-living facilities do offer their own activities (such as bridge, yoga classes and book clubs) and can be ideal for people who can’t stay in a traditional home or live with relatives.

With assisted living, you have your own apartment and receive three meals a day, medical monitoring and medication assistance (by a nurse or an aide). Cost: $1,000 to $5,000 per person per month.

    Recent development:
Growing numbers of so-called continuing-care communities. They offer independent (often freestanding homes) and assisted-living programs in addition to skilled nursing home services all on the same campus.

These communities can be expensive, often requiring a front-end, onetime payment of $100,000 or more, plus monthly fees for meals and other services. Good to know: Many continuing-care communities now have a variety of payment options to make them more affordable. Go to the AARP Web site, http://www.aarp.org, and search “Caregiving,” to research different payment methods.

  15. Jessie Says:

I got another one of those videos and article exclaiming the majesty and complexity of human pregnancy and birth. This bull shit is supposed to make me anti abortion.

My response to the constant assertion that pregnancy and birth by humans is so much more special than the rest of those that experience it on our planet is:

Pick any random mammal and you will find that the progression from getting pregnant to birth is no less complex.

If you think that the complexity of the process during human pregnancy in itself is a reason to hold human life sacred, then shouldn’t you come to the same conclusion for animals?

  16. Lance Says:

The on going hostage situation involving several americans in Algiers should put those who are complaining about Obama using drones to go after terrorists on notice.

As the Secretary of Defense said we will go after them wherever they go. No country will be able to grant the safety because we will use drones to hit their asses.

It that bothers you wimps so much, then volunteer to marshall a force to go after them.

  17. Zen Lill Says:

Clearly, the man is a jerk.
Biology being what it is, there is no explaining attraction, I’ve been completely turned off by a man for having gained weight and allowing himself to =expand= I imagine it happens the other way around, though how about men manning up and if you want attention so bad, do what it takes to get some quality attention and have a woman want to be around YOU.
How about that?? Many men aren’t so sweet and attentive to their appearance after a certain number of years either, why is it always women who need to toe the looks line?
(though that’s changing with all the Ab & Fitch hottie bodies displayed everywhere, men have to got to get some looks in their game now, too & good, it’s about time they felt that pressure, see what it feels like : ) and hmm, I dig the eye candy : D
    Luv, Zen Lill

  18. Judie Says:

This Lance Armstrong thing just proves that any sport that whites excel in is about some form of cheating. The germans, russians and the rest of those all white nations are all guilty of doping.

I remember when the first time a white male became the fastest person in the world. Lights went off in this white girls head.

    CHEATING!!!!! was on my mind.

  19. Sam Says:

I think Mr. Tsiaras’s depiction of human embryonic development is educational, but not awesome, however.

    Women are awesome.
    Birth is awesome.
    Babies are awesome.
We human beings are just awesome.

But couldn’t Mr. Tsiaras have done the same developmental investigation and depiction on, say, a dog or a frog?
That which WE RECOGNIZE AS so “awesome” about us humans, I believe, happens after we are born.

  20. Bob Says:

“I wish that my birthmother would have aborted me instead” – said no adopted child ever.

    All human life is precious.

  21. Alycedale Says:

Just to show you how despicable the majority of the white race is take stock of how many videos and conspiracy theories are out there claiming the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax done by the federal government to take away your guns.

It is not just a few nuts espousing those theories, white college professors and scientists are out in droves making the claim.

This kind of shit springs from their Affirmative Action Benefit of being able to say if the legal system convicts an OTW then “the law has spoken, let’s move on.”

But if they are the losers, the the mantra is “fuck the law.” It is unfortunate that the majority of that race can’t come to terms with the fact that they should be treated equally with the rest of us.

  22. Courtney Says:

Lance lost the $75Million endorsement from Nike. I keep thinking Nike must be making hundreds of $billions if they can hand out such large sums to these athletes.

  23. Olga Says:

On my return visit to America after 51 years. I was astounded at the ads on your TV. When I returned home and discussed with my american friends that when I was there a few years ago there were very few ads for tampons.

But after 50 years, every other ad was about some male fix for their penis or sex drive. What happened I asked.

I must admit I got a lot of different responses. Almost like the opinions on your blog Michelle. The one I got most from women was that white men are so narcissistic that they will do anything to keep that tiny organ of theirs working.

One even added that viagra was the worst thing white women have had to endure from modern medicine. White women used to count on the lost of a hard by their husbands when they got older as a blessing.

Now they are forced to put up with the same inadequate sexual advances they were forced to endure in the early stages of their marriages.

Also now that the creeps can chemically get a hard on many are chasing younger women which as been a direct cause for the increased divorce rate since advent of viagra.

I must say I have enjoyed these discussions.

  24. Zen Lill Says:

Olga, why on earth would your friends willingly marry men who gave inadequate sexual advances (and ‘forced to endure it’) none of that sounds like marriages that had any value in terms of openness or communication of any kind, why would they do that, or was it just something women did bc they didn’t know any better 50 years ago?
Hmmm…none of that make the case for the ‘institution.’

…and I like my own take on getting a Viagra fix for anxious men, first said man must present at least 3 letters from women who want to have sex with them (willingly) and then let’s add 3 more letters, from same women or others, who find them performance-worthy (sexy, sensual and interested in pleasing their partners), and only then can they have that RX filled at the pharmacy. you’d see some studying of the Kuma Sutra right quick ; ) and women would not have ‘endure’ anything but the best.

I usually don’t watch TV so I don’t know the exact ratio of tampon/female audience info to viagra/male audience info, I’ll have to look that one up, that’s not right at all to have more for male sexual performance than for female life practicality. I must say that I thought more women enjoyed sex with their mates though it doesn’t sound like your group of friends did…not even a little, that’s sad and I’m sorry to hear that.
