Republicans’ Own Investigation Into ‘Dangerous’ Abortion Clinics Discovers They’re Already Very Safe

Good morning.
Republicans’ Own Investigation Into ‘Dangerous’ Abortion Clinics Discovers They’re Already Very Safe
Republicans in Congress hoping to push for tighter regulation of the country’s abortion clinics may need to go back to the drawing board.
Spurred by the controversy overKermit Gosnell, an illegal abortion provider in Philadelphia who was convicted of murder for performing incredibly late-term abortions on low-income women, abortion opponents have been attempting to conflate Gosnell’s crimes with legal abortion providers across the country. Back in May, Senate Republicanscalled for a widespread investigation into abortion clinics nationwide — and House Republicans followed suit by sending letters to health officials in each state, demanding to see documentation about how each of them monitors and regulates abortion procedures.
The results of that GOP-led inquiry? Abortion clinics are already very well-regulated, and the services they provide are extremely safe.
Lawmakers sent letters to attorney generals and health departments in all 50 states. RH Reality Check obtained 38 of the responses provided by state attorneys general and 31 provided by state health departments — which consisted of thousands of pages of data regarding existing abortion clinic regulations, the results of clinics’ regular health inspections, and the records for any criminal investigations into abortion providers. After sifting through the data, RH Reality Check concludedthat “congressional Republicans will find no support for their arguments in favor of new restrictions on abortion care in the evidence presented by the states.”
The analysis of the state documents revealed that abortion clinics are already regularly inspected. Most states inspect them annually and report any incidences of patients being harmed by the care they received there. But there are extremely few of those types of reports. Some states said they weren’t aware of any patient ever being harmed in one of their abortion clinics. It makes sense, then, that states report very few instances of criminal charges being brought against abortion providers. Although Kermit Gosnell’s salacious story captured widespread media attention, RH Reality Check found that the vast majority of abortion providers aren’t being charged with any crimes.
In fact, if there’s any issue with the current state of abortion regulations on a state level, it may be that there’s already too much red tape. RH Reality Check notes that the complicated web of state-level rules often subject abortion providers to onerous reporting requirements and lengthy paperwork, while their patients typically have to complete a lengthy application to receive care.
Much of this information is already evident from state-level health data. Earlier this summer, as Texas Republicans forced through a package ofstringent abortion clinic restrictions that will likely force most of them to close, state health officials testified against the proposed legislation. They pointed out that there was significant evidence that Texas’ abortion clinics were already extremely safe. But it didn’t matter. The GOP-led legislature pushed through the legislation anyway, putting women’s access to reproductive health care in jeopardy as abortion providers brace for massive clinic closures.
Nevertheless, the actual data typically hasn’t made a difference for abortion opponents, who continue to indirectly compromise access to reproductive health care by targeting clinics. Texas certainly isn’t the only state that has recently enacted unnecessary clinic regulations under the guide of keeping abortion patients “safe.” It’s become one of the most popular types of attacks on abortion access at the state level.
Anti-choice lawmakers may continue invoking Gosnell’s name to justify cracking down on abortion clinics — thanks to the emotional outrage surrounding Gosnell and his late-term procedures, it’s been an effective tactic of derailing the conversation about reproductive rights. But elected officials will have to find a source to draw on other than the recent “investigation” into states’ abortion clinics, which didn’t exactly turn up the evidence they were counting on.

Should You Confront Your Childhood Bully?
My friend Brenda is a big success by just about every measure. She has a great marriage, adorable children, numerous friends, good health and a rewarding career. But sometimes she’s still haunted by the memory of having been bullied at sleepaway camp one summer.
It happened when she was 13, that awkward time in life when kids are confronting the enormous challenge of figuring out who they are. One of her bunk mates mocked her for the way she looked in her glasses, and the other kids chimed in. For the rest of the month-long camp session, Brenda was mercilessly teased by the ringleader and ostracized by the rest of her bunk mates.
SHE HAS NEVER FORGOTTEN THE SENSE OF HUMILIATION.
Recently Brenda stumbled upon a Facebook page for alumni of that sleep-away camp…and there was a post by her bully. Brenda’s heart started to hammer.
She asked herself, Should I write to this woman and ask why she was so mean to me that summer? Would it help me feel better to finally speak up for myself…or would I just be inviting a problem back into my life?
She decided to take the risk. In a private e-mail to the bully, Brenda described the mistreatment and asked for an explanation of why she had been victimized.
The bully wrote back saying that she had little memory of having been unkind to Brenda, but she readily offered an apology for the pain she had caused. And in a revelation that Brenda found most interesting, the woman said that she herself was later bullied during high school, so she understood the lingering effects that her cruelty could have had on Brenda.
The upshot? The e-mail exchange offered a world of healing to Brenda, who felt proud of her own courage…and was finally able to fully forgive her old nemesis.
I was so intrigued by Brenda’s story that I decided to consult an expert on bullying for insights on this idea of confronting one’s childhood tormenter. So I called William E. Copeland, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University Medical Center and lead author of a recent study on bullying.
HAUNTING MEMORIES
First, Dr. Copeland pointed out that Brenda’s experience of being beset by memories of bullying is very common. In fact, his recent study revealed that being bullied in childhood “is worse than we thought” in terms of its long-term ramifications.
“The effects of childhood bullying don’t end when the child becomes an adult. Many victims continue to struggle with emotional problems,” he told me.
Dr. Copeland and colleagues followed 1,420 children, starting in 1993 when they were ages nine through 13. The children were interviewed every year until age 16. Of the original group, the researchers were able to follow 1,270 into adulthood and interview them about their mental health.
Findings:
Adults who had been victims of bullies as children—and those who had been bullied but also had bullied others—had the greatest likelihood of experiencing psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, panic disorder or agoraphobia.
Since the study was published in April 2013, Dr. Copeland has heard from many adults about their own experiences with bullies. “A lot of these folks are having trouble.
And even those who are doing really well in life are likely to say, ‘I’m 40 or 50 or 60 years old and I still think every day about the time I was bullied. It still bothers me.’ Clearly, even if these formative experiences are not controlling our every step, they still have a lot to do with who we become,” he said.
CONFRONTATION: YAY OR NAY?
I asked Dr. Copeland whether reaching out to the person who bulldozed you in your youth is a good way to put those lingering issues to rest.
His answer was cautious—because, he noted, “There is absolutely no research on this.” Though a lot of people have told him that they think about confronting their childhood bullies, it’s not necessarily a wise idea.
“If someone is having a lot of difficulty with the fact that he or she was bullied as a child and continues to have emotional issues around it, I do not think that therapists generally would recommend contacting the bully. The reason? It’s very unpredictable,” Dr. Copeland said.
“Many bullied people imagine a Hollywood scenario wherein the bully humbly apologizes or withers under the adult victim’s invective against them. However, a bully bullies by gaining power over his victim—and by reestablishing contact, you may in effect restore rather than reduce his power over you.”
For instance, ask yourself how you would feel if the bully ignores you…claims to have no memory of the incidents that were so significant and painful to you…or responds with a belittling, “Yeah, so what?” You also must recognize that, while the Internet makes it fairly easy to seek out your bully, it does put you at risk for being bullied again.
An e-mail or text message can be forwarded to many people…a private Facebook message can be posted on the bully’s page for all his friends to see. By reestablishing contact with your bully, you expose yourself to the possibility of public embarrassment.
EXPLORING THE ALTERNATIVES
Rather than fantasizing about a confrontation, Dr. Copeland suggested that an adult who still suffers the ravages of childhood bullying should work with a trained therapist to address his emotional issues.
This is particularly important if there is an ongoing pattern of victimization. “In such a case, a therapist can help you break free from people who continue to victimize you and replace them with a supportive network of friends who find you interesting and likable,” he said.
If you feel that you must speak up to your bully, consider writing a letter explaining your feelings—and then either tuck it away or rip it up without sending it, Dr. Copeland suggested. That could be a useful tool for expressing yourself without opening yourself up to the potential risks of an actual confrontation.
Also consider what you know about your bully’s own experiences. Interestingly, Dr. Copeland pointed out that the world of bullying breaks into three groups—bullies…victims…and bully/victims, meaning those who bully others and also are bullied themselves. “Bullies are a relatively small group of people, whereas bully/victims are a much larger group,” he said.
If yours was a true bully—someone with no compunction about hurting others—watch out! “Children who are true bullies generally do not become great people as adults,” Dr. Copeland cautioned.
“We found that these folks were not having emotional problems, but they were having behavioral problems and continuing to mistreat people.” If you confront a true bully, your odds of having a positive encounter are slim, and there’s a real risk of reigniting the bullying.
However, if you have reason to believe that your bully, like Brenda’s, was a bully/victim, there’s a better chance that you would get the kind of response that would be helpful. Brenda is glad that she reached out to her bully.
She did it with gentleness and a true desire to understand a particular chapter in her life—and she was fortunate, Dr. Copeland said, that her bully responded in kind.

What about the commercial use of hemp fibers and other derivatives? How come no one is speaking about it as a new industry? Fast growing makes it a good storm crop…

As a teenager who was born and raised here on Guam, it’s sad to see that what was viewed as bad in just a few years back, has now been said to be good. Being a Seventh-day Adventist, we have a health message to share with the community. So, I reach out to those who may be reading my comment. Just like any other pill taken, marijuana soothes the pain of suffering, but doesn’t remove it completely. I know it is very cliche, but a healthy lifestyle can and will help those we are suffering from illness. We become sick because we don’t take care of our bodies. If you want to get better, make the EFFORT to go for a walk (we have beautiful beaches let’s make use of them), or do some swimming (our water is clean and warm. be thankful), or invite your friends to go for a jog/run. You don’t need to constantly resort to that orange bottle in your medicine cabinet… God gave us these bodies, but because of sin they have issues and need fixing. If we learn to love God and learn to understand and know his will for our lives, then He can help every one of us on this island, and also around the would.
Before resorting to marijuana, I strongly suggest to use activated charcoal for ANY health issues. Just like anything, it just needs a little time. Why does something bad, now have the right to be good? Have we gone mad?
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

I like how people create bogus profiles just to post comments on Michelle’s blog. If you idiots have anything bad to say against marijuana, I hope you’ve done your research. If you still disagree, then that’s okay, marijuana can’t treat stupidity.
You need another medicine, good luck finding that. For those of you advocating for decriminalization or legalization, stop being so damn pessimistic. Whether this is a political stunt or not, if it gets the mission done, then so be it.
If it doesn’t, then at the least, it gets people talking about it…again. And if you’re really passionate about legalizing, then be about it. Write PDN, tell your senators and congresswoman, speak out.
If you’re too scared to be connected to marijuana and have to make a fake profile, then you’re not really helping the fight.

Foster, Yes there is a FDA approved pure THC pill called Marinol, but it is problematic.
Marinol is less effective than Medical Marijuana because it is pure THC (which is far more Psychoactive), and therefore lacks the proven healing properties of the multitude of cannabinoids found only in Natural Marijuana.
Beyond that, Marinol is ridiculously expensive and is not covered by most health plans.
Why mess with pills when it has been proven that Natural Medical Marijuana is extremely effective, non toxic, and much cheaper, with none of the side effects of pharmaceuticals?
Please Open Your Mind and take the time to educate yourself on the truth about Medical Marijuana

Well said, Tammy, I know people who have lost their mental health through taking Marijuana. My mom was a psychiatric nurse and it was one of her frustrations that people take it, without realising the impact it could have on their health.
I still remember visiting my friend Elliott in the mental hospital. Very sad as he had all his life in front of him. Once your mental health is damaged it’s hard to make a full recovery.

And for those not afraid to show their face and say “I want marijuana legalized!”, I am trying to start NORML Guam Chapter and need 5 people to be on the board. If you want to join, let me know. They require a resume to be submitter so the more accomplished you are, the better.

Hey, guys come to O. Here it is legal.
September 13th, 2013 at 1:12 am
I do not think many are against medicinal use…but decriminalizing it is unnecessary and the only true advocates for decriminalizing it are mainly recreational users that want the negative stigma and legal consequences erased just because they can’t follow society’s laws.
Sorry, but you can’t piggy-back the positive affects that are shown to support marijuana usage for medical reasons onto the legalities of social marijuana use. For all the positives we know, most people seem to ignore the indisputable negatives of marijuana both physical and social.
For those that want to compare it to tobacco and alcohol, I would say to you; would you trade places, making marijuana legal and cigarettes and alcohol illegal? Personally, I would go for that trade. There are certainly less health risks, but I still would never accept any personal under marijuana’s influence in the workplace, nor would I consider it socially acceptable.
There is certainly reason and room for open discussion, but I would seriously like for all the recreational users to stop arguing in favor of it’s legalization just because it helps those in need of medical use. It simply does not apply to you and makes you an absolute hypocrite who should be excluded from any argument on this matter.

You’re assuming that the law against marijuana was right to begin with. You sound like an educated person, do some research on that, and then tell us why was making marijuana illegal in the first place was so righteous.
And cannabis plant isn’t just good for its medicinal value. Recreational users and all who support marijuana doesn’t want to just have decriminalization or medical marijuana, we want to abolish prohibition and legalize it fully. Both sides agree on the same principles: don’t want kids using it, no one driving under the influence, and keep crime away.
Obviously the current law isn’t working. Why not try a different way and see what happens? If its worse, we can always go back. I, along with many other, think legalization is the better way.
September 13th, 2013 at 1:31 am
It helped a good friend of mine feel less stressed, gain a healthy appetite, and ease her nausea with her struggle with cancer. Not all the people who are in favor of it’s legalization of medicinal use just trying to get their hands on some of the ‘good stuff’ as people would say. You can not deny the benefit and positive effects from this.
The government spends thousands of dollars trying to track down and enforcing ‘the war against drugs’ (which I might add focuses more on marijuana) and it is a victimless crime. No one has ever died from marijuana use alone. The highest percentage of people in rehab for marijuana are court ordered so that the government can say ‘well look at this study, all these people are in rehab for it, there must be something wrong here’.
Of course you would rather go to rehab than jail. It is not an addictive drug, and actually has many benefits. I feel like most people are stuck on the stigma that it’s for hippies and burnouts. Granted, anything can be abused, and I do agree that there is a certain time and place, and professionalism set in force, of course you wouldn’t be rolling joints in the high school parking lot.. There is hardly any thing out there this natural that is this beneficial.
Some would say more so than the pharmaceutical drugs, which are artificially made in a lab with manmade ingredients. I do not smoke marijuana, but I am in favor of it being legalized, because I have seen first hand what the positive outcomes are of this natural substance. I am happy to say my friend is cancer free and alive and well today.

Hafa Adai.
Here is a new computer scam. Those of you on the mainland be careful also.
=================
A Guam resident was duped out of $79 this week because of a computer and phone scam, according to the Office of the Attorney General, which said it has known about the scam for months.
According to the attorney general, the resident was scammed Monday evening, when he was called at his home by hackers claiming to represent Microsoft.
They told him to log onto a web site, then log onto his email and open a message with the subject line “Authorisation.”
When he did so, he found an authorization letter with his full name, a receipt for a payment transaction of $79, and the three-digit card verification number from his VISA card.
The man checked his bank account and found that $79 had been withdrawn from his checking account, according to the attorney general’s office. The criminals then locked the man out of his computer.
They had obtained the man’s Internet Protocol address, called him, and used his personal information to rob him, according to the attorney general.
“The Office of the Attorney General has been aware of the ‘Microsoft Office Technical Support’ scam for months now, but as consumer awareness increases, these attempts to scam people morph so that consumers fall prey,” said Attorney General Leonardo M. Rapadas.
“Do not ever give your IP Address, personal information, or any information for that matter, to anyone you do not know; … they are trying to steal your hard-earned money or using your information to attempt to create a new scam. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”
September 13th, 2013 at 2:11 am
In an event like this, gaining access to your computer can be a tricky process. As a computer tech, I would recommend removing your hard drive and backing up all of your documents and pictures. Once that has been completed, reformat your hard drive and install a fresh copy of your operating system. After that, update your operating system and all of your drivers. As a extra step, access your router and assign your computer a static IP address. Finally, use not only a good firewall, but a proxy service like TOR to keep yourself protected.
Remember though, no one on the internet is truly hidden or protected. Every protection scheme that is engineered can be reverse engineered.
September 13th, 2013 at 2:12 am
Peter, I’m a Certified Microsoft Technician and we at Microsoft have noticed that the lights in Guam are dimming nightly every time you’re online.
We can fix the problem if you’ll give us Authorisation to make a house call and inspect your hard drive.
It won’t be necessary for you to stay at home — just leave the key under the mat and we’ll let ourselves in while you’re at work.
Also, keep any animals on a chain in the back yard.
To simplify billing, just leave your credit card and PIN number on the dresser and will mail you a receipt.
September 13th, 2013 at 2:14 am
Those idiots tried their trick on me last week, telling me to turn on my machine and press some keys…lol They said my machine is causing problem to the network and if I don’t let them (Microsoft tech) fix my problem they were going to disconnect me.
I told them to go ahead and disconnect me cause I aint going to do what you’re saying i’m going to do with my computer…lol. I call them idiots and hung up…lol still hooked to internet!
September 13th, 2013 at 2:14 am
I suppose he believed that “Authorisation” was spelled correctly. But giving up his social security and bank account number as just plain dumb. BTW, your IP Address is always given to anyone on the internet and it’s impossible to hide it unless you purposely use proxy server.
September 13th, 2013 at 2:15 am
Ouch! They tried calling my cousin to try and scam him but he knew what was up. It’s easy to know if you are getting scammed just by the way they talk. They always ask the same questions and sound like they are reading a script. Good luck!
September 13th, 2013 at 2:15 am
“Authorisation” I would have been like do you even spell bro? *click*
September 13th, 2013 at 2:17 am
Thank sounds like a hellava good deal, Bill. Can you people at Microsoft fix my computer as well? I will leave the back door open over the weekend since I will be off island. Do you take local checks?
September 13th, 2013 at 2:54 am
Hafa adai, you got my “Authorisation” feel free to come in anytime, no dogs around and my doors are wide open for you. Oh by the way i’ll be off island so feel at home Bill.

Tammy, I would normally and even now, in theory agree with you about taking care if your health and body. I a. Personally referring to those who are already in pain, if using the organic value if the green medicinal hemp plant assists, why not make it available? Also, the hemp plant as pointed out above is a valuable plant fr a variety of other reasons and can help us reach a green sustainable future.
If course, there will always be some one who abuses the drug, doesn’t dose properly, uses too often or has a mental health issue due to it (need more details on that persons prior mental health history before commenting further though) and of course, no use in work place, etc as stated above (sorry forgetting the names of particular commenters now), and recreational use is less risky than alcohol which is basically poison to your system (use sparingly). Rather than thc pills making or buying edibles is best, the thc is amplified by 8 in strength once introduced into the digestive system unlike smoking the stuff. I say do more research, there’s proof the pros outweigh the cons 2:1.
