Florida Man Cites ‘Bush Doctrine’ As Justification For Pre-Emptive Killing At Barbecue
BY NICOLE FLATOW ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2013 AT 12:53 PM

William T. Woodward is facing murder charges for the alleged shooting of three people on Labor Day, two of whom have now died. In his defense, his lawyer is not only making a novel legal argument that Florida’s Stand Your Ground law applies, saying he was protecting himself against “imminent death” because of an ongoing dispute between him and the men he shot. He also invoked the “Bush Doctrine,” the foreign policy Bush used to justify aggressive military intervention, to argue that pre-emptive attack can be a form of self-defense, Florida Today reports.
According to police, Woodward stealthily approached a Labor Day barbecue around 12:30 p.m. and fired 31 rounds. When police arrived, three men had been shot. Two died, while a third who was hit 11 times, survived. In the weeks leading up to the shooting, the neighbors had unsuccessfully tried to get “repeat violence” injunctions against one another. Woodward, a veteran who says he is being treated for psychiatric problems that prevent him from controlling his anger, was caught on surveillance video crawling on his belly toward the neighbor’s house. He told police afterward he considered himself on a “mission” and that he was in a “war zone,” according to WFTV.
In his motion seeking immunity from murder charges, Woodward’s lawyer cites a recent Florida court decision that interprets “imminent” criminal activity in another context to mean “not only impending or ready to take place, but also expected, likely to occur, or hanging threateningly over one’s head.” He reasons that one can likewise use deadly force to prevent “imminent death” under the Stand Your Ground when a threat of death hangs over one’s head.
As broad as Florida’s Stand Your Ground law is in authorizing deadly force, a judge would be hard-pressed to infer that the Florida legislature intended to authorize shootings in which “imminent” effectively means “preemptive.” But the legal motion demonstrates the mindset of at least some of the state’s lawyers, who apparently feel comfortable citing a doctrine of war in the context of a self-defense killing. That mindset also seems to be infecting those individuals who, citing expansive self-defense laws, choose vigilante justice over calling the police.

White America has basically ruined our culture. They always go too far when they attempt to reconstruct social norms.
When they tried to fix child abuse, they ruined any discipline by parents of their own children by literally giving the child a 800 number to report parent discipline.
Now with their attempts at providing self-defense they have engineered this wild wild west bullshit.
Small dicks definitely equals small minds.

Carlos, agreed, they always have to take things to the extreme (that fits their convenient ending) what a bunch of morons, not to mention appendage size, seems the mind is definitely affected by that third leg (or lack thereof).

A New Promise for Mission Children
Last weekend, I was honored to meet with families from the Mission at the launch of one of the city’s largest collaborative efforts to combat poverty: the Mission Promise Neighborhood. This city-wide partnership supports children, youth and their families living, working, or attending school in the Mission District.
One out of five Latino children in the Mission currently lives in poverty – which is nearly twice San Francisco’s poverty rate – and seven of the San Francisco school district’s 10 lowest performing schools are located in the Mission District. These children deserve better.
With this five-year, $30 million Promise Neighborhoods implementation grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement, these children and their families will receive high-quality, coordinated health, social, community, and educational support.
The Mission Economic Development Agency will partner with the San Francisco Unified School District, the Office of Mayor Ed Lee, UC Berkeley’s Center for Latino Policy Research, the United way of the Bay Area and many other community groups to ensure that children in the Mission are provided a path for success, from cradle-to-career.
By linking student achievement with a family’s economic security, this innovative initiative empowers our community to break the cycles of poverty that block too many children from achieving their dreams.
Congresswoman Pelosi joins families in the Mission at the Mission Promise Neighborhood launch at John O’Connell High School highlighting the $30 million Department of Education grant for a collaborative partnership to combat poverty and improve education outcomes by increasing access to health, social, community, and educational service.
Remembering 9/11
Twelve years ago, our nation was shaken, our hearts were broken, and our country came together. All of us remember where we were when the Twin Towers fell, when the Pentagon was struck, when Flight 93 was brought down in Pennsylvania.
No one could ever forget the courage of the firefighters and first responders who ran into the carnage to save others and search for survivors, without regard for their own safety. No one could ever forget the 9/11 families, who turned their grief into action to make America safer, to protect the health of first responders, and to cherish the memories of loved ones forever.
May the story of that day always inspire us to stay true to the character of our country and our common values as Americans and may God continue to bless the United States of America.
Honoring Four Girls Killed in Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Bombing
The names of these four young girls who died in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing remain seared in our hearts: Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley.
Their legacies remain a sober reminder of our tasks today: to ensure that equality is a birthright never denied and defend the right of all Americans, regardless of race, to lead their lives without fear. So, half-a-century later, we only hope to have the strength and wisdom to live up to their legacies as we award them the highest honor that Congress can bestow: the Congressional Gold Medal.
Human Rights for All
In a New York Times op-ed this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote, “we must not forget that God created us equal.” Hopefully, he includes gays and lesbians in Russia as well.
Please feel free to forward this information to your family and friends. To learn more about these efforts, to express your views, or to sign up for email updates, please visit my website. I am also on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NancyPelosi.

That was a crazy read Bea. The inane son of a bastard probably didn’t have enough between his legs to even please that vagina.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:02 pm
If I overheard people threatening me I would take it to the police. Thats what there for.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:02 pm
“thinking outside the box … I commend him for that.” — Since when did the idea of being creatively malicious in order to justify cold-blooded premeditated murder become something we “commend” people for?
September 13th, 2013 at 6:03 pm
Who knows? It could work in Florida. He’s White. If the neighbors are African American, it will almost certainly work.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:05 pm
I cannot wait to hear the NRA spin on this….
September 13th, 2013 at 6:05 pm
Now, I am a fan of the FBI stepping in if a Florida judge or jury can’t see OBVIOUS premeditated murder when they see it. It amazes me we’re even having this conversation. OHHHH, I so want to know how this turns out.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:07 pm
RRE, It should work in Florida, white guy and idiot jury.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:08 pm
Matt, We’ve already had a couple of runaway juries in FL in recent days. Too many more would definitely tend to get the attention of higher powers.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:09 pm
This is great – proves what I’ve said for a long time: the crazier they are the more likely they are to want–and wield–guns.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:10 pm
This is the logical conclusion of SYG: first-degree murder justified by imagined fear
September 13th, 2013 at 6:13 pm
NOPE, Rachael,
THATS CALLED PRE MEDITATED 1 ST DEGREE MURDER…
SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER PROGRESSIVE IS GOING TO JAIL,
THE DOUCHE MUST HAVE BEEN WATCHING MSNBC 24-7
September 13th, 2013 at 6:14 pm
Matt, yup, The last man standing can always claim he was the last one to feel afraid and thus enjoy the protection of the law. SYG creates an incentive to escalate violence.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:14 pm
So, I can now kill him, since he is clearly an imminent threat to me since Hey, one day he could try to kill me. Works both ways, no? In fact, we can now all kill each other because Hey, maybe we might have killed each other first. Murder is no more. it’s now legal to kill anybody you want to. Bush Doctorine says so.
Seriously? WTF? WTFH?
PS. In case you couldn’t tell, I wasn’t being serious in the first paragraph. I have no intentions of killing this moron.
PPS. Isn’t it a shame i need the above disclaimer because somewhere, some moron will read it and think I’m announcing my plans?
September 13th, 2013 at 6:15 pm
They did threaten to get him.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:16 pm
Smokey#14:
Suuuuuuuurre progressives always cite the BUSH DOCTRINE to justify 1st degree murder ….NOT.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:17 pm
James, Did they? Is there proof of such comments made?
September 13th, 2013 at 6:19 pm
Gregory, NO MSNBC JUST TALKED ABOUT IF FOR 4 YEARS AND SAID HOW BAD BUSH WAS….
September 13th, 2013 at 6:19 pm
So, you’re saying that the Bush Doctrine is “Bush is Bad”?
I have to say I am so stunned I am unable to respond.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:20 pm
Smokey, Was it the drool oozing from your slack jaw that made your caps lock key get stuck?
September 13th, 2013 at 6:39 pm
I hope that someday you manage to get your comedy show on television, or at least take it on tour so that we can get it in more than 3-second bursts. Kudos on your hilarity!
September 13th, 2013 at 6:40 pm
.Why not, because his neighbours were having a overly smoky barbecue with loud threatening music. It sounds plausible.
The only thing missing is tea and candy…
September 13th, 2013 at 6:41 pm
Arthur, I believer Mr Spader was showing how fucking ridiculous the whole thing is. When I was growing up in the South,”Get ‘you” is what one said to children to get them not to be naughty. If it was said it was most probably a joke.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:42 pm
He knows the Bush Doctrine so he is already more knowledgeable than Sarah , sign him up .
September 13th, 2013 at 6:43 pm
If his neighbors are black he is definitely walking.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:43 pm
Clearly he planned to kill and did so with malice and forethought – this is what 1st degree murder charges require and he should be charged accordingly.
His lawyers should be sanctioned for the frivolous justifications they advanced to justify their clients actions.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:45 pm
the lawyer is as nuts as the killer. florida you have a horrific problem and your tourist revenue will suffer greatly. the NRA is your worst friend.
September 13th, 2013 at 6:45 pm
My neighbor is an immigrant from Europe. If I kill him, can I cite the Monroe Doctrine as a defense?
September 13th, 2013 at 7:25 pm
Kirke, you’re so right. I also had to comment bc I once had a lover named Kirke and he was nuttier than a fruitcake (and a closet blow monkey) and when I gently broke up with the kook, you have to tap dance gently with people of whacked psyche (lest they try to drug you and brand your precious sweetness, that story was just plain crayyyzy) and he showed up at various places sporting different ‘looks’ for months – black glasses and a fedora once, and bleached blonde hair another time while trying to convince me he was someone – um – new? Freaking nut job, I seriously thought he was having a psychotic break in front of me when he did that…learned some lessons about how bizarre people can behave when they become obsessed very early in life, and this man looked normal though if you looked deeply there was something in those eyes…(hmm, probably was the very thing that attracted me at the time, I leaned towards bad boy bc I knew I was never getting married, ever, so why not go the colorful route and live dangerously. What(?), I changed my mind about marriage and did my very best at it. Till death do us part is a very long time…
Thanks for the memory, Kirke ; )

Oh, My Aching Foot! Help for Common Causes of Foot and Leg Pain
The average person walks the equivalent of four times around the world in his/her lifetime. No wonder foot problems plague more than three-quarters of US adults! The good news is that we can take steps on our own to relieve the pain. Here are the most common symptoms and problems—and what you can do…
ACHILLES TENDONITIS
Symptoms: Pain above the heel or in the back of the leg.
Even though the tendon in the back of the heel is the strongest and largest in the body, it’s still among the most vulnerable—and when it hurts, it can hurt a lot.
Inflammation of the tendon, known as Achilles tendonitis, usually is due to overuse. The tendon gets weaker and susceptible to injuries with age. If you overwork the tendon—say, by spending a few hours on the dance floor or the basketball court—the fibers can develop small tears and get inflamed. It typically takes at least three months for it to heal completely. In the meantime, don’t engage in high-impact exercises such as running, and switch to low-impact activities such as biking or swimming. Also…
Start with ice.
Ice is one of the best ways to reduce inflammation and help the tendon heal. When you first feel pain at the back of the heel, apply an ice pack for up to 20 minutes. Keep applying ice throughout the day—and keep the heel elevated as much as possible for a few days. You can further reduce inflammation by taking aspirin or ibuprofen.
Try heel lifts.
These are thin wedges that slip into your shoes. Raising the heel as little as one-eighth of an inch reduces stress and helps the tendon heal quicker. Use lifts in both shoes so that your body is balanced. I like Spenco Rx Heel Cushions and AliMed Heel Lifts. Both are available online and in pharmacies and some stores.
Important:
If you can’t stand up on your toes even for a second, there’s a good chance that the tendon has ruptured (completely torn). Surgery is the only treatment for a ruptured Achilles tendon.
MORTON’S NEUROMA
Symptoms: Feels as if a pebble is in your shoe…pain in the ball of the foot.
Morton’s neuroma is a thickened nerve in the ball of your foot. It typically causes sharp pain or burning that gets worse when you walk. The abnormal growth of nerve tissue is the body’s response to irritation—usually from shoes that are too tight or from wearing high heels. Anything that puts repetitive pressure on the toes, including activities such as jogging, can cause Morton’s neuroma.
Wear wider shoes. Giving the toes more room to move reduces pressure and causes the neuroma to shrink back to normal, possibly within a month or two.
Stretch your toes.
The nerve may be trapped under a ligament in the foot. Stretches will lengthen the ligament and open up space over the nerve. A few times a day, use your fingers to bend your toes up and down. Stretch them as far as you comfortably can, and repeat the stretches about a dozen times.
PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Symptoms: Stabbing pain in the heel of the foot.
A thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) runs across the bottom of the foot. It connects the heel bone to the toes and creates the arch. Small tears in the tissue can cause burning/stabbing pain, particularly in the morning.
Important:
Get a second opinion if your doctor recommends surgery. About 90% of cases heal with conservative care within a year.
Apply ice. Hold an ice pack over the painful area for 15 or 20 minutes, three or four times a day.
Replace your shoe insoles.
The Powerstep brand of insoles support and cushion the plantar fascia and help it heal more quickly. You can buy insoles at pharmacies, sporting-goods stores and online for $15 to $60. In many cases, they work as well as prescription products (which can cost $550).
Use a tennis ball or rolling pin to gently roll along the bottom of your foot (while sitting).
Take aspirin or ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation.
Replace worn-out athletic shoes. They stop cushioning your feet after about 500 miles of use.
See your doctor if the pain isn’t gone within three months. He/she might recommend a steroid injection. Used judiciously, steroid injections can help heal a chronically inflamed area quickly. Three steroid injections per area are the maximum for one year—more than that in a year can weaken tissue.
SHIN SPLINTS
Symptoms: Pain that runs along the bone on the front of your lower leg.
Shin splints are caused by inflammation that affects muscles and the underlying bone. They usually are caused by activities that involve sudden stops and starts, such as aerobics, jogging, tennis and basketball. They also occur in people who walk a lot in hard-soled shoes.
Use ice to reduce inflammation. It’s the most effective treatment for bone and ligament trauma. When you are in pain, ice the area of the leg—10 minutes on and 10 minutes off, as needed.
Try arch supports.
They slip into your shoes and support the bottom of the foot. They reduce stress on the lower leg and will help shin splints heal more quickly. I like the brands Powerstep (see above) and Superfeet.
Talk to your doctor about bone stimulation. If the pain of a shin splint lasts more than a few months, you may have a stress fracture at the tibia. Your doctor might recommend a bone stimulator, a prescription device that uses ultrasound or electrical currents to stimulate new bone growth. Bone stimulators are worn daily for a minimum of three hours per day for 90 to 180 days.
BUNIONS
Symptoms: Bump and pain at the base of the big toe.
A bunion is a bony hump that forms on the outside of the foot, where the big toe emerges from the foot. Take it seriously, even if it doesn’t hurt. It means that your big toe is pushing in the wrong direction.
It can lead to joint damage, as well as a misalignment of the other toes. Some people are born with a tendency to develop bunions. More often, they are caused by narrow, ill-fitting shoes (particularly high heels) that press the toes into odd positions.
Wear sensible shoes. “Sensible” means that the shoes are wide enough to allow your toes to move. Avoid shoes with sharply pointed toes or heels higher than two inches.
Do foot exercises to relieve symptoms and increase flexibility. Point and flex your toes, or massage the bottom of your foot with a golf ball.
See a doctor if the bunion is painful or getting larger.
It will get worse unless you take care of it. The treatment might be as simple as a custom-made shoe insert that will reduce pressure on the affected joint. Surgery (bunionectomy) is recommended only if the bunion is persistently painful and doesn’t get better with other treatments.

Zen Lill, I love your comments. I usually check to see what you have to say and then I email it to my mother she thinks you are hilarious. If not for you she wouldn’t touch email.
But please tell me what a “closet blow monkey” is.
September 14th, 2013 at 6:46 am
No, Wyatt, because globalism.
September 14th, 2013 at 7:38 am
Ray – ?? I thought that was supposed to be “Because Benghazi.”??
September 14th, 2013 at 7:57 am
Erica, a closet blow monkey is someone who does their cocaine in private and they think they’re kidding everyone – meanwhile their teeth are grinding side to side and they yak non-stop, this one (Kirke) kept the symptoms somewhat under control and at the time it took me time to catch on bc I did not & do not partake in that particular poison.
I’m glad your mom thinks I’m hilarious, laughing is very under-rated and can be the best balm for your soul, it also creates a connection and establishes rapport with others faster than anything else…
(which is likely why I’ve had a small share of obsessed kooks in my life, male and female : )
