Rachel Maddow, Writer For The Washington Post

Good morning!

Rachel Maddow is one of my fave reporters. I love her strong commitment to revealing the truth and calling people out on their lies…and yes many times doing it with a bit of witty humor. She’s good at that. Plus she loves dogs which is big in my book. I’d love to hang out with her some day.  :)

Anyway, I just read this article that she is going to be writing a Washington Post column. How cool is that? Good for her. I’m excited for her and in my opinion, I think the Post could use someone of her caliber representing the liberal left. Not that the Post doesn’t have some good writers (They do!), and not that the Post doesn’t represent the left (They do!), but I think Maddow will be a great addition representing us girls. I’m looking forward to reading her writes. Congratulations Rachel!

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to write Washington Post column

The journalistic bond between The Post and MSNBC just grew a bit stronger, as the paper’s opinion section announced that MSNBC host Rachel Maddow will be writing a monthly column. “We expect that she will bring to Post readers the strong arguments, sharp wit and thoughtful analysis of political and social issues that have made her show an Emmy Award winner,” noted a memo on the move.

In a brief chat, Post Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt (the Erik Wemple Blog’s boss) said he was “really excited” about adding Maddow to his roster of columnists. “She’s written for us before and what she has done is great,” said Hiatt. In 2012, Maddow wrote opinion pieces for The Post on the protracted war in Afghanistan and on the “war on birth control.”

The Post’s arrangement calls for Maddow to write once a month over six months, though Hiatt said he’d “certainly be happy” if Maddow wanted to up the frequency and extend the term of her engagement with the paper.

Hiatt said he doesn’t perform any sort of ideological accounting before bringing on someone like Maddow, a staunch liberal. “Our goal is to have the smartest, most original commentary about Washington and its issues from left to right,” said Hiatt, noting that the spectrum is “pretty well represented.”

The Maddow announcement comes a week after The Post’s opinion section announced the addition of the Huffington Post’s Radley Balko as a blogger on criminal justice topics. Do these moves reflect a beefier budget for opinions under new Post owner Jeff Bezos? “I don’t have more budget, but I do feel as though we’re all being encouraged to think about opportunities, not just limits,” said Hiatt.

Numerous opinion and news staffers from The Post appear regularly on MSNBC airwaves, including Dana Milbank, Jonathan Capehart, Chris Cillizza, Eugene Robinson and Ezra Klein.

Memo on the move:

We are delighted to announce that Rachel Maddow, host of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” will be joining The Washington Post’s Opinion section as a monthly columnist.

Rachel, who has written previously for The Post, is the author of “DRIFT: The Unmooring of American Military Power.” The 2012 book was a national best-seller.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” has been nominated by the Television Critics Association for “Outstanding Achievement in News and Information” four times. Rachel received the 2012 John Steinbeck Award from the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose University. Before becoming an MSNBC political analyst in 2008, she was a host on Air America Radio.

Rachel has a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Stanford University and a doctorate in political science at Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She lives in New York and Massachusetts with her partner, artist Susan Mikula.

Her first column will be published this week.

Thank you Social Butterfly for getting people to open up. I am white and I hope they don’t hate all white people. I have never been a bigot and I live in South Africa.

  2. Anna of Guam Says:

If you want to have a happy holiday, don’t get scammed by these guys. They are calling people on Guam and trying to get your passwords and other personal information.

The Bank of Guam is urging residents to watch out for phishing scams during the holiday season.

An email with the subject “Important Notice for IFITonline® Commercial Users” was sent to Bank of Guam customers and noncustomers, a press release stated.

The email has been identified as a phishing scam, which is an attempt to steal personal information such as usernames, passwords and other account details.

Bank officials provided the following information:

    • Bank of Guam will never ask you to validate your personal information outside of our secure channels (i.e., in the branch, over the phone, upon secure login to online banking). You should be suspicious of any email or online site that requests you to do so.

    • When using IFITonline, you must enter through the Bank’s official website homepage: https://www.bankofguam.com. All other links that direct you to an unfamiliar page should be treated as suspicious.

    • Once you have logged into Bank of Guam’s online banking, the URL will change to https://online.ifitbanking.com. Anything other than this should be treated as suspicious and you should not proceed.

For more information, contact the bank’s customer service at 472-5300 or email customerservice@bankofguam.com.

  3. Peter, GU Says:

They arrested three more suspects in the rape of that 11 year old girl. These creeps are despicable. I am posting the link so that you on the mainland can hate them too. http://www.guampdn.com/article/20131218/NEWS01/131218003/Three-more-arrested-connection-alleged-group-rape.

    Some good news:
    —————
Guam Army National Guard troops who can’t find jobs after they return home from Afghanistan soon will be covered by a federally funded unemployment insurance program.

Sen. Aline Yamashita announced this morning that the unemployment insurance program will be provided to the troops through the federally funded Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Service members Program.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration informed Guam officials that more than 200 Guam Guard members and reservists will be able to participate in the program.

Guam doesn’t have its own unemployment insurance program, so Yamashita welcomes the federal jobless benefits program’s applicability to Guam troops.

Guam’s National Guard members face an unemployment rate of as high as 35 percent. Guam’s overall unemployment rate is 13 percent, and the nation’s is 7 percent.

    This story is developing.

  4. Roberto Says:

There are many sociological problems within the community on Guam. It is refreshing to hear someone speak out about that fact. Child love, if you will, seems inherent within the culture. This must be recognised and treated like the cancer it is.

Thank you for your informed comments regarding this sickness. We need more people like you who recognize this, and maybe then our sociological ills will finally be addressed.

The community can not continue to figuratively burry it head in the sand about this. It is real, and it will not go away by itself. Child love and blatant bigotry are ills that need to be admitted by the community, and eventually eradicated. If not the community will remain SICK!

  5. Deborah Says:

It is very unfortunate that this had happened to an eleven year old girl on island and my heart goes out to her and her family. I truly hope that she is getting the medical, mental and emotional care she will need to recover from this terrible crime committed against her.

Be aware though race honestly has nothing to do with this crime, sending people back to their respective homelands only eliminates the possibility of that particular individual from repeating the same offense.

The truth is that this behavior among the individuals who commit these heinous crimes is just a symptom of a bigger problem here on island. The following information is taken from a documented created for the Bureau of Statistics and Plans created for FY 2009-2012:

“Another growing concern on Guam is the sexual assault cases involving a child. Although Guam’s only rape crisis center serviced 76 victims of sexual assault in 2008, a 38 percent decrease over the
123 victims that received services from the center in 2007, it is important to note that 65 PERCENT OF THE VICTIMS WERE BETWEEN THE AGES OF ZERO TO FIFTEEN.

Of the 76 victims that received services, 70 WERE FEMALE VICTIMS and 6 were male victims. THERE WERE 50 SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES INVOLVING VICTIMS BETWEEN THE AGE OF 0 TO 15 YEARS OLD.

26 sexual assault victims between the age of 16 to 50 years of age, and 1 sexual assault victims over the age of 50. ”

    http://www.bsp.guam.gov/Attachment1_RecoveryJAG_2009_PUBLICNOTICE.pdf

The fact that the number of cases decreased by 38% in 2008 is little reassurance to me that the problem on island is being dealt with properly when MORE THAN 65% OF THE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL CRIMES ON GUAM WERE CHILDREN FROM THE AGE 0-15 YEARS OF AGE! CHILDREN! Our children, our future..OUR CHILDREN. God only knows what our current statistics are and these are only the cases that are actually being reported. So many criminal acts of violence and sexual abuse against our children go unreported because there is no outlet for these victims and sadly very little resources for both the children and their parents to turn to for help. And make no mistake, I guarantee, if research is done properly into this growing and prevalent social problem on the island, you will find that a majority of the crimes committed were committed by family members of the victims. FAMILY MEMBERS!

If you can’t see where I am going with this, let me point it out: that there is a very serious issue on island with our men and the women who commit these crimes against CHILDREN and it doesn’t always involve drug use or dependency by the individuals who commit these crimes. This problem is not something that just popped up out of nowhere nor is it a problem that has manifested because Guam has experienced an influx of outer islanders migrating over to seek a different or possibly better life. The problem has existed for years. There are roots to this issue embedded within our society and if our researchers and government agencies would move their asses and start performing the much needed research into this social problem here on island we just might be taking steps in the right direction in preventing another child on our island from being sexually molested, abused, raped or physically harmed.

  6. Doratia Says:

Helpme, wow what a name. he sure needs help now, PLEASE DEPORT HIM AND OTHER RAPISTS. WITH THAT NAME, HE AND THE OTHERS ARE CHUUKESE. WHAT A SHAME TO THE COMMUNITY. IT ONLY MAKES THE CHUUKESE COMMUNITY MORE VULNERABLE TO THE NEGATIVE ATTITUDE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY HAS TOWARDS THEM.

CRIMES LIKE THIS SHOULD BE HANDLE WITH VERY STRICT JUDGEMENT. DEPORT THE ADULTS TO THEIR HOMELAND AND THE YOUTH SHOULD BE REPRIMANDED WITHOUT A CHANCE TO COMMIT ANOTHER PROBLEM LIKE THIS, MAYBE THE PARENTS SHOULD ALSO BE JUDGED.

SO SAD, FOR HARD WORKING PARENTS TRYING TO MAKE A LIFE OUTSIDE OF THEIR ISLAND, IF THEY ARE NOT ON FREE HOUSING AND OTHER AMENITIES

  7. Irene Says:

I wish my relatives would stop calling me to get me to take sides. I don’t believe Megyn Kelly was joking when she said that Jesus was white. Jesus lived in the Mediterrian and had olive skin and black curly hair.

  8. Natalie Says:

I am married to a terrific black guy but the things we have had to put up with, I could write a book. We just came back from a three month trip abroad.

To our surprise we were asked none of the silly racial questions that we get much too often here in America. It’s both our country but it is fucked up.

  9. Pauline Says:

DORATIA, stop with the criticize .. dnt worry about it , ya’ll didnt name that boy .. have faith in yourselfs, will ya .. Let GOD deal with thier sins .. nobody here aint perfect .. please dont be so racist against us chuukese ..

  10. Deborah Says:

Roberto, I didn’t want to be so blatant about what particular problem I speak of, but you are right Robert. “Child Love”. Another thing I need to point out too is that, those who know that this type of crime is being committed and say nothing, are committing crimes themselves too.

Those who keep their mouths shut and say nothing just made themselves an accessory to the crime. I don’t know about everyone else, but by god I am tired of reading about the prevalent abuse of children here on our island. Sick and tired!

  11. Gwendolyn Says:

Social Butterfly I married a black man three months ago. My parents are so upset. We are a very old money Kentucky family. Mother said that she is not prejudiced, she just thinks blacks are a very angry race.

David and I were reading some of the comments you sparked yesterday and I said looks like blacks all over the world are an angry race. He said go in there and tell my grandmother what you said. I refused.

So he grabbed my hand and took me into his grandmother’s room and showed her a few of the comments and said “Mama do you think blacks are an angry race”?

She said to me “sit down baby, I have something to show you.” She raised her gown and showed me scars on her right leg and said “these are bite marks from a policeman’s german shepherd dog, I fell down and the dog also bit me here.” She dropped her top to show me similar scars on her right breast.

Then she looked at me and said “all the while that dog was attacking me he was on a least being held by a white policeman. I am not angry about that. But at the time we, as a people, were tired of seeing ‘white only’ and ‘colored only’ signs and we were really tired of being lynched. So we marched to protest and stop it.”

Then she took her grandson’s hand and said “never allow them to take you back there. If you have to kill every single one of them or die trying to, that is what you do.”

Then she took my hand and said “I wish you and my grandson all the happiness in the world. You are always welcome here.”

My take was, if she was angry, she had cause.

  12. Wolf Says:

Michelle, Why don’t they just hire Obama to write it himself and cut out the middleman?

  13. Harry Says:

I hope her columns are shorter than the nightly 15 minute opening rants based on creating straw men and them shooting them down by firing some Republicans at the issues she creates.

  14. king Says:

Wolf, Obama can’t write, Just ask Ayers!

  15. Henry Says:

Harry, She will be lost. She cannot interlineate smirk, shrug, eye roll, grunt, eyebrow raise and the other mugging gestures that keep the chimps in her video audience on edge during her rants. Most importantly, her audience cannot read.

  16. Stella Says:

King#14, The same Ayers who openly says he only affirms conspiracy theorists to bait morons?

  17. Jerry Says:

Henry, Exactly, her shtick doesn’t translate to text…ask Maureen Dowd who must do rhetorical cartwheels in the attempt to convey liberal ‘gotchas’.

  18. A marine Says:

    Henry#15, you forgot the giggling.

  19. King Says:

Given Madcow’s overall lack of talent and general ignorance, I have to wonder who the Post is going to get to Ghost-write her column?

  20. Lindel Says:

The Post is looking to lose the rest of their readership…

  21. Gene Says:

This is odd news, I thought the Wo-Po was trying to increase subscriptions?
Odd

  22. Dan Says:

She’s hedging her bets. Things aren’t going great at MSNBC in case you haven’t noticed. A little diversity in her income portfolio!

  23. Michael Says:

The Washington Post? All the positions at Pravda must have been filled.

  24. Lucy Says:

I hope you guys are having fun. I know I am. It is so much fun hearing the dumb as dirt, claiming to know anything but what fox tells them.

If you are watching Rachel, there is hope.

  25. Stella Says:

Michael, I think Lucy nailed you idiots. The Pravda in its original form doesn’t exist anymore since 20 years. Way to keep up.

Try something other than fox as Lucy suggested, you might have a chance of sounding like you know something.

  26. Steve Says:

Michael#23, You’re about 30 years behind the Times. Pravda is more right wing than the Washington Times.

  27. Toshe Says:

Column by Maddow; haircut by Moe Howard.

  28. Foster Says:

Rachel Maddow to Write Monthly Column for the Washington Post

Yet one more reason for me to not read or subscribe to the WaPo.
As if I really needed another reason, Far Left Bias passed off as Objectivity was and is reason number one. Nothing else was needed.

  29. Jerry Says:

Toshe, Fashion by the good ole USSR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…

  30. Nancy Says:

Well, Foster, you can always find plenty of right-leaning opinion at the Post by limiting yourself to the six conservative columnists, including Will, Krauthammer et al, and then you can return to the Examiner and the WaTimes where you shan’t be exposed to even a single left-leaning comma in any edition. Ideological purity…how precious.

  31. Brad Says:

Nancy#29, Your condescension is palpable. So smug, you are.

  32. Josh Says:

Traveling through Dulles recently, a well intended someone offered me a copy of the WaPo they finished reading. In plain sight of many others, I respectfully declined the offer.

In order to avoid confusion, I informed those witnessing my complete and total rejection of the WaPo’s legitimacy. The worthless pile of liberal drivel and delusional observations was forthrightly deposited into the trash bin.

Maybe everyone should demonstrate such public disdain for liberal rags — make a presentation out of stuffing it in a cat litter box or mixing it with the day’s garbage. Nothing gaudy or rude, just the simple act of throwing that paper in the trash and rubbing their hands together as if to discard any remnants.

It’s like finding a Playboy stuffed under the mattress of your 12 year old son’s bed. You dispose of it as if it were contaminated (much to the chagrin of the young lad). Think of the fun we’d have in airports, etc.

  33. Foster Says:

Nancy#30, I’m exposed to enough Far Left bullshit blather already, thank you very much. Turn on Network News or any cable news channel other than Fox News Channel and I get more than enough of a dose of the bullshit being served up.

I won’t even get into the bullshit of the local print rag other than to say it’s Western WA.

  34. Doug Says:

As Darth Vader once said about Nancy, “The Farce is strong in this one.”

  35. Thomas Says:

The Wa Poo is in its final Death Throws! Calling an undertaker for these Boobs would be more in line.

  36. Sonja Says:

Excuse me Josh#32 are we supposed to believe that anyone gave a shit about what you did with that copy of WaPo? I mean has it ever occurred to you that most of the people who even bothered to observe your plea for attention probably just thought “another fox idiot, who could use some real facts for a change.”

  37. Patriot Says:

Rachel Madcow meets the Washington Compost. That’ll be the gift of gibbering progressive leftist slop that’ll keep on giving.

  38. Anonymous Says:

    Libs R Thieves

  39. Sonny Says:

Next the Post will announce its new Editorial writers – Martin Bashir and Alec Baldwin.

  40. Protector Says:

Good. Now she can be a drain on their ratings too.

  41. A marine Says:

The “lefty lesbo” writing a column for the lefty rag? Hmmmm.

  42. Foster Says:

Thomas#35, Bezos must need a major tax write-off, this development certainly won’t make the rag any more financially solvent.

  43. Jerry Says:

Sonny#39, Editorial writer? You’re thinking too small. Talents of the quality of Baldwin and Bashir belong on ‘the board’.

  44. Bill Says:

Randy will have as many readers as viewers of his show, two………good luck with that dude……….

  45. Manson Says:

Unfortunately for her, you can’t smirk or sayyourwordstwiceasfasttosoundwittyandimportant when writing a column.

  46. RD Says:

Awesome! Just another in a long list of reasons not to read this rag. However my dogs will be disappointed as they have to learn to piddle on a different paper.

  47. Dan Says:

Foster#42, Yet another good reason to ignore that “publication”.

  48. Kenneth Says:

Foster,#42, Is this the start of more to come from Bezos’ ownership? More liberal twaddle from the comPost?

  49. Drake Says:

Perfect: a writer always on the rag, writing for a rag.

  50. Drug Says:

Bill#44, At least it will supply Chris Hayes some talking points for her show…

  51. Handley Says:

Oh goody goody gumdrops! The Washington Compost better get ready to save a lot of space for Maddow’s apologies for promoting kooky conspiracy theories that are 99.9999999% wrong.

  52. Jerry Says:

Drug#50, Good catch…they can continue the liberal circle jerk for the dozen viewers of his show, “Moderate WashPo columnist and registered Independent R. Maddow supplies us with the Evil Conservative of the Month with a take on (insert name of current TEA Partier who is making Obama look bad).”

  53. Cowboy Al Says:

Her column will be 16 inches wide and 2 inches deep.

  54. George Says:

Just another reason to ignore the Wash Post

  55. GOP fan Says:

Another coup for the Amazon Post. They get the manliest man from MSNBC.

  56. Rowdy Says:

I can’t tell the difference between Chris Hayes and Ezra Klein. Perhaps MSNBC would be kind enough to ask one of them to smirk with the left side of his mouth, and the other with the right side.

GOP Fan#55, Heard they wanted a woman, but Matthews is still catatonic from the strain after his public stroking of President Mom Jeans, and Hayes just announced that she’s pregnant with twins. I hear they have different fathers.

No word on the identities of the DNA donors but sources tell me that the kids will be named Alec Jr and Martin Jr.

  60. Owen Says:

Jerry, give it a rest. Trolling won’t gain any support for the idiot party.

  61. Jerry Says:

“We expect that she will bring to Post readers the strong arguments, sharp wit and thoughtful analysis of political and social issues…”

Anyone who has ever seen her program is still waiting for those qualities to be aired. So far, I’ve never seen hide nor hair of a strong argument, sharp wit, or thoughtful analysis on display at any time. See, she never invites conservatives onto her program. It’s doubtful the Post will get any of them, either.

There is nothing more entertaining than reading right wingers lose their stuff over Rachel Maddow. It is really quite fun. Especially on your blog Michelle.

They fall all over themselves trying to come up with the dumbest, most petty, immature comments about this brilliant, decent woman. My favorites are the ones about how irrelevant she is while, here they are slobbering all over themselves to say something nasty, all the while revealing her significance.

As Maddow herself said, “It is truly a blessing to have total freaking idiots as your enemy.”

  63. Mike,TM Says:

Jerry, the reason Rachel doesn’t have conservatives on her show is they know that she will eat their lunch if they try to swill the garbage they give to you idiots.
