Hillary’s Choice

Good Morning!

From the Daily Kos:

Hillary Clinton taps Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as her running mate

GettyImages-547389564Multiple outlets are now reporting this. From the New York Times:

Hillary Clinton named Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia to be her running mate Friday, according to a senior campaign official, selecting a battleground state politician with working-class roots and a fluency in Spanish, traits that she believes can bolster her chances to defeat Donald J. Trump in November.

Mrs. Clinton’s choice came after her advisers spent months poring over potential vice-presidential candidates who could lift the Democratic ticket in an unpredictable race against Mr. Trump.

In the end, Mrs. Clinton decided Mr. Kaine, 58, a former governor of Virginia who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and speaks fluent Spanish, had the qualifications and background and the personal chemistry with her to make the ticket a success.

Clinton is expected to make a formal announcement either today or tomorrow in Florida.

A notable vote of confidence from Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards (who also happens to be the daughter of late Texas Gov. Ann Richards):

From EMILY’s List:

“The strongest candidacy for women and families just got even stronger,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “Hillary Clinton has championed the most progressive, inclusive agenda in history, and Tim Kaine is an excellent choice to amplify this platform. Senator Kaine has been a strong supporter of economic opportunity for women – he has stood alongside our women in the Senate and fought for equal pay for women, raising incomes of American workers, and protecting access to health care through the Women’s Health Protection Act. Senator Kaine is an excellent choice to help move forward an agenda that benefits all Americans.

League of Conservation Voters:

“Awesome choice, Hillary! We’re thrilled that Hillary has picked Senator Tim Kaine to be her running mate. As mayor, governor, and senator, he has a proven track record as an environmental leader who has worked to combat climate change, grow our clean energy economy and protect special places in Virginia and across the country. An environmental champion with an impressive 91% score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard, Senator Kaine is a fantastic addition to the presidential ticket. LCV Action Fund could not be more excited to help elect Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine the next president and vice president of the United States. Onward!”

End Citizens United:

“Tim Kaine is a true public servant, serving as a missionary, civil rights lawyer, teacher and elected official.  He has sided with Virginians against the special interests and understands that the only way we’ll truly restore the voice of everyday Americans in our democracy is to reverse Citizens United.  That’s why he has stood on the side of reform for over a decade – pushing for more transparency and disclosure, voting to advance a constitutional amendment, and calling for an end to Republican obstruction of President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court.  From day one, the Clinton-Kaine team will fight to end the corrosive influence that billionaires’ and corporate special interests’ unlimited, secret money has on our elections and our government.”

Progressive Change Campaign Committee:

“As we saw in Donald Trump’s speech last night, Republicans will run hard against Democrats on trade this year. Unfortunately, since Tim Kaine voted to fast track the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Republicans now have a new opening to attack Democrats on this economic populist issue.

“The mood of the country is a populist one. The center of gravity in the Democratic Party has shifted in a bold, populist, progressive direction — regardless of who is selected by Hillary Clinton as Vice President.

“It’s now more important than ever that Hillary Clinton run an aggressive campaign on core economic ideas like expanding Social Security, debt-free college, Wall Street reform, and yes, stopping the TPP. It’s the best way to unite the Democratic Party, and stop Republicans from winning over swing voters on bread-and-butter issues.

American Federation of Teachers:

“The choice of Tim Kaine, the son of a welder who has lived middle-class values and has a long track record of progressive accomplishments, reiterates Hillary Clinton’s commitment to building a government that will level the playing field for working families. While the GOP ticket masks irrational ideas behind a morally bankrupt message of fear, bigotry and hatred, a Clinton-Kaine ticket will be focused on helping people see higher wages, lower student debt, good jobs, successful public schools, and safety and security here and abroad.

Democracy for America:

“Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate in the history of our country and that’s why we’re working as hard as we can to unite the Political Revolution with the Democratic Party establishment to defeat him.

“Secretary Clinton’s choice of Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate doesn’t change that goal, but Kaine’s support for fast-track authority for the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership and recent backing of bank deregulation will make our work more difficult.”

From the Clinton campaign:

On Saturday, July 23, Hillary Clinton will campaign with the Democratic candidate for Vice President, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, at a rally at Florida International University.

Rally in Miami with Hillary Clinton and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine
When:
Saturday, July 23 at 12:00 PM EDT
Doors open for public: 10:00 AM EDT
Where: Florida International University Arena, 11200 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33199
Members of the public interested in attending the Miami rally should RSVP here.

🇺🇸👍🏼🇺🇸

Readers: I was secretly hoping that Hillary would pick Elizabeth Warren, although I knew that would not have been a good move. If women are having a hard time supporting a woman for president, having two women on the ticket would’ve been risky (Some day!), and we can’t afford being risky when the stakes are so high.

Picking the man that she did was a smart choice. Tim Kaine is a strong supporter of women, women’s rights, and women’s health. He supported Clinton before when she was running against Obama – they’re good friends. Plus he’s a popular Senator from Virginia, a swing state. That certainly is a bonus when it comes to voting time – Hey, Virginia voters: Swing on over to the Dem side! He’s got the qualifications and the background - and he’ll be a great support to her again this time around…this time when she wins.

I’m excited.

Wow. I guess when the powers that be are freezing us out it even effects The Regulars this time. I hope I make it in because I so want to comment on this article. I love Tim Kaine.

We go way, way back. He is a love conquers hate person.

  2. Frank Says:

Kaine has defended several death row inmates and lost everyone of them to the electric chair .

He’s going to have the same difficulties defending this as well .

  3. Brad Says:

Hillary supports NAFTA and TPP job killing trade agreements. She is a thoughtless and ruthless jobs killer. Her great economic plan is to raise the minimum wage at Macs. Americans want our real jobs back.

Hillary cares more about BLM right to riot and throw bricks at police. It’s time America first. Hillary can’t be trusted. She has been bought by the Chinese,Saudis, and most of the rest of the world. She is influence by their support and money.

Obama didn’t inherit the 20 trillion dollar national debt his liberal policies created it. Did he try to retain any of the 50 thousand factories that left the country. Union man, American worker, middle class and Sanders supporters time to vote for Trump!

  4. Irene Says:

I like Zen Lill’s old suggestion that trump might just be working for the dems, and Hilary in particular. If you think, “Naaa, too crazy. Think back to 1998. Less than 10 years ago.

Trump said in People magazine 1998

” if I were to run , I would run as a republican. They are the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe any thing on fox news. I could lie and they would still eat it up.

I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
    ————————————–
Trump working for Hilary? or Conspiracy?

  5. Hanna Says:

Frank#2, Death row appeals are very seldom won. At least he tried.

That really the best you can come up with?

  6. Marilyn Says:

I bet many missed the plagiarism by Ivanka of Hilary’s positions. Fruit doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

Just like Melania Trump forget to credit Michelle Obama for those statements in her speech, Ivanka Trump forgot to credit Hillary Cllinton for all those positions she said Trump’s campaign had on women’s, families’ and children’s issues.

Every one of those positions has already long been on Hillary’s web site already with a detailed plan on how she will implement them.

Meanwhile, not a one of those positions appears on the Trump campaign web site at all among it’s stated positions.

If anyone has any criticism for Hillary its that she puts too much detail on her website about her positions and how she plans to implement then. Makes for boring reading. Of course that does not excuse Trump his plans being so lacking in how he would implement them.

  7. Tim Says:

Who knows what that bitch hilary will do if she’s becomes president. All I know she cannot be president of this United States…..no way!!!

  8. Janis Says:

I know that this is hard to believe, but Trump’s kids forgot to change their registration to Republican for the primaries voting for him was so unimportant for them.

  9. Trish Says:

Tim#7, As a Trump voter you should go read the WAPO article: Donald Trump is a unique threat to American democracy

It is a scathing condemnation of Trump and they say they will never endorse him. They do note this is a historical first to do so this early but that he is that much a threat to the U.S. if elected. So you might not agree with it but it shows you the world of hurt Trump is about to face in the general.

  10. Dawn Says:

Janis#8, They did not forget. NY has closed primaries and required registration changes so early that most people did not even know Trump was running. This means there are millions of NYers that wanted to vote for Trump in the primary but could not and will vote for him in the general. Most NYers are independents and can not vote in the primaries.

    Yes, NY is in play.

  11. Olga Says:

I’m curious about how many millennials were swayed by the Trump children’s positive messaging and raw intellect.

  12. David Says:

Trump’s core demographic is white males over the age of 40 who do not have a college education. I suspect this is why Trump added the comment about the LGBTQ.

  13. Lilli Says:

Dawn#10, Whatever. That’s news to the polling organizations as with the last poll three weeks ago in NY at Clinton +23 they have not bothered polling since. Polling costs money.

  14. Gary Says:

Olga#11, I believe their messages may have had a big impact on the viewers, many of whom were probably undecided.

  15. Dawn Says:

Lilli#13, The polls are manipulated. They use them to try to get people to join the bandwagon.

But I know what I see. Hillary needed to put a minority on the ticket to get the base enthusiastic and she didn’t.

  16. Anonymous Says:

Olga#11, Why would anyone trust a family member to give an objective view of someone?

  17. Margaret Says:

Gary#14, No candidate ever has had family members at a convention speak so much. Because Donald Trump couldn’t get anyone else to say nice things about him.

Where were some of those people Ivanka said Donald Trump helped when he saw their stories in the newspaper. Could not line up even one of them to speak?

  18. Reza Says:

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. — Melania Trump

  19. Linda Says:

With the disaster that is the Trump/Pence campaign Hillary could pick the person who would be best to help her govern as VP and become POTUS in the worst case scenario. Which is exactly what she said was her criteria for a VP was back in April.

Meanwhile, there is no one on the Trump/Pence ticket capable of being POTUS.

  20. Xena Says:

Hillary, no Duck Dynasty endorsement – that makes it hard to decide

  21. Dirk Says:

    Poor Donald…..

A federal judge on Friday issued a tentative ruling to deny a bid to dismiss a lawsuit by unhappy customers of Trump University.

U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel made the ruling from the bench in San Diego, California, with more motions to be heard in the coming weeks.

  22. Owen Says:

    Dawn#15,

    “The polls are manipulated…”

Oh. You are one of those conspiracy theorists. No wonder you like Trump as a candidate so much. He is too.

  23. Dawn Says:

No one likes Hillary. And Kaine is as bland as white bread.

  24. Andy Says:

Elizabeth Warren, you got schooled baby, You have been replaced by the Wall Street Duo for the next 16 years. Better get those face lifts to stay ready.

  25. Tucker Says:

Kaine voted AGAINST HR-4038 “American Security Against Foreign Enemies” which “expands background checks for Syrian and Iraqi refugees applying for admission to the United States/ Prohibits an alien from being admitted to the US as a refugee until the FBI determines they are not a threat and the Secretary of Homeland Security certifies they are not a threat”

    KAINE VOTED AGAINST THAT !

  26. Dawn Says:

A picture of Clinton and Kaine together.

    What is missing?

    Bernie.

  27. Lewis Says:

Andy#24, Warren will have more clout in the soon to be Democratic Senate.

And putting a Republican in her seat would risk that.

Only the dimmest person does not get that.

  28. janet Says:

Dawn, you are so busy trying to encourage discord among the Democrats, when you should be trying to mend those Republican fences. Can you answer this riddle. Who said what to donald’s this:

I alone can stop crime…they’re sending rapists….Mexico will pay for Big tall Superwall….Mexican judges are biased against me ‘cuz I’m gonna deport them and make them pay for my wall….all Muslims will be refused entry and mosques will no longer be allowed to operate…Lyin’ Ted and Little Marco….

  29. Henrietta Says:

So Kaine is white bread. Does that make Pence born again or undead? I get so confused.

  30. Rebecca Says:

Shades of Zen Lill, Very well said Janet#28, to Dawn. Oh and Dawn did you forget this? absent: H-Dubya, Dubya, Jeb!, Romney, Kasich, Rubio….

  31. Jesse Says:

Dawn, Compared to Kaine, Mike Pants is ultra low energy. Guess Donald didn’t want to share the limelight.

“Airport workers were left scratching their heads after spotting what looked like a giant UFO in the sky.

The incredible footage, believed to have been filmed at Miami Airport, led to those on the tarmac whipping out their camera phones to snap the strange phenomenon.

  35. Hilary Says:

I’m thrilled to share this news: I’ve chosen Tim Kaine as my running mate.

Tim is a lifelong fighter for progressive causes and one of the most qualified vice presidential candidates in our nation’s history.

But his credentials alone aren’t why I asked him to run alongside me.

Like me, Tim grew up in the Midwest. During law school, he too took an unconventional path — he took time off and went to Honduras to work with missionaries, practicing both his faith and his Spanish.

When he returned to the states and graduated from Harvard Law, he could have done anything. But instead of going to some big corporate firm, he chose to fight housing discrimination as a civil rights lawyer in Richmond. He and his wife joined a church, built a home centered around their faith, and raised three beautiful children. Then, after 17 years of practicing law, Tim ran for city council — and won.

Tim says his experience on city council taught him everything he knows about politics. To the people in Richmond, an underfunded school wasn’t a Democratic or Republican problem. It was simply a problem that needed fixing, and his constituents were counting on him to solve it. So Tim would do it. He’d roll up his sleeves and get the job done, no matter what.

He’s a man of relentless optimism who believes no problem is unsolvable if you’re willing to put in the work. That commitment to delivering results has stayed with him throughout his decades-long career as a public servant. So I could give you a laundry list of things he went on to accomplish — as mayor of Richmond, governor of Virginia, and in the United States Senate.

But this is what’s important: Tim has never taken a job for the glory or the title. He’s the same person whether the cameras are on or off. He’s sincerely motivated by the belief that you can make a difference in people’s lives through public service.

That quality comes through in every interaction. To know Tim is to love him. When I was talking to people about this decision, I couldn’t find anyone — Democrat or Republican — who had a bad thing to say about him. From his staff over the last 20 years to his colleagues in the Senate, Tim’s beloved.

He is a genuinely nice person, but Tim is no one’s punching bag. He will fight tooth and nail for American families, and he’ll be a dogged fighter in our campaign against Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

I want you to know that I didn’t make this decision lightly.

I’ve had the privilege of seeing two presidents and two vice presidents up close. I want a vice president who can be my partner in bringing this country together. I want someone who will be able to give me their best advice, look me in the eye, and tell me they disagree with me when they do.

But what matters most is a simple test that’s not so simple to meet: whether the person could step in at a moment’s notice and serve as president.

I have no doubt that Tim can do the job.

I want him by my side on the trail and in the White House.

  36. Bill Says:

A little Warrior news couldn’t hurt:

Stephen Curry would have preferred to play in the Rio Olympics. “I wasn’t too happy with the situation of having to pull out of the Games,” he said in a Facebook Live news conference from the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe.

“I wish I would be able to play in those. I was looking forward to it.” But, the two-time MVP added, getting injured in the NBA playoffs changed his plans. “With the situation as it is now, to rest and get ready for next season, to what I need to prepare my body …

It’s a nice mental break as well to be able to play some golf and get out here and enjoy this experience.”
