Newt Gingrich On The ‘Everyday Danger’ Of Being Black In America
The former House Speaker has become a de facto adviser to presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a former House Speaker whom presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is reportedly vetting for vice president, said Friday that black people in the U.S. “are substantially more likely to be in a situation where the police don’t respect you, and where you could easily get killed.”
“Sometimes, for white people, it’s difficult to appreciate how real that is,” Gingrich said during a Facebook Live conversation with former Obama administration official Van Jones. “It’s an everyday danger.”
“If you’re an African-American, then you’re raising your teenage boys to be very careful in obeying the police,” Gingrich said to Jones, who is black and the father of teenagers. “Literally, their lives are at risk [if they interact with police], and they can see that on television.”
The former House Speaker’s comments came as the nation collectively mourned the five Dallas police officers who were killed on Thursday following a peaceful demonstration against police brutality. The protest was prompted in part by police fatally shooting two black men earlier this week ― Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
“If you’re a normal Caucasian,” Gingrich continued, “you don’t see that, because it’s not part of your experience. What we need is to have a conversation about mutual experiences.”
Gingrich also admitted that he has not always understood the disparity between how white Americans and black Americans are treated.
“It took me a long time, and a lot of people talking to me, to understand that if you are a normal white American, the truth is that you don’t understand being black in America,” Gingrich said. “You instinctively underestimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk” that black Americans face.
Gingrich, who appeared on stage with Trump in Cleveland this week, has emerged as a top contender for the Republican vice presidential nomination. He has also become a de facto adviser to Trump, who is mounting his first-ever national political campaign.
Gingrich initially chided Trump for his “inappropriate” remarks on Indiana-born federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel, but later defended the candidate, saying that he did not think the comments were racist. Trump claimed the judge’s Mexican heritage would keep him from being able to fairly preside over a fraud suit filed against the now-defunct Trump University program.
Gingrich said Trump had learned his lesson about the racist attacks, and had “moved toward a more controlled, more civil approach.”
Gingrich’s talking points from Friday could provide some much-needed insight for Trump, who has a decades-long record of allegedly racist business practices and public statements.
Both Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton canceled campaign events they had planned for Friday. The Trump campaign has not announced when, or if, Trump and Gingrich plan to appear together again.

Alycedale: Me too. And no I agree that you don’t need to explain why women wait but I’m glad you did for the ignorant men who can’t seem to figure it out on their own.
I’ll will add too, to the dimwits out there who still don’t get why she waited so long. Unless you have been harassed or raped, please don’t judge the time frame a woman may need to speak out.
A woman speaks out against her perpetrator when she is good and ready and only she knows when that is. Only she knows when she feels safe or when she feels she can handle the attention she is going to receive from speaking out. Hell, some women have blocked it out from them memory until something triggers it and the memory surfaces, and then she speaks out.
And just for the record, Larry: I may not like the way some of the women on FOX throw women under the bus or debase them, but I don’t condone the sexual harassment or worse, rape of women and certainly not because of their bad behavior. Only a man would put those two in the same paragraph as if they have something in common. That’s the problem with most men, they don’t see the difference. They think being sexually harassed to give up a little pussy is in the same category as women dissing women. It isn’t. That just shows you how little regard and respect men have for women.

Michelle, maybe you should change the name of your blog to the HATE BLOG. All your supporters seem to be haters. Kill or be killed seemed to be the motto here. Punishing everyone for the deeds of some is ass backwards. Hate will only ever beget hate. Where’s the constructive conversation about how to solve the problem realistically? It’s not realistic to think you can solve the problem by killing all the cops or all the white people. That just continues the cycle of violence. How is that behavior going to solve anything? Sure, you may feel better about getting your revenge, but you are just making the world more fucked up for the others coming behind you. Act like them, you become them.

Christine#1, first let me say you must be reading another blog. No one on this blog has suggested that anyone kill all white people. But you have notice many have come on this blog and advocated killing all “niggers.”
Your position is from the view point of oppressors who do not want to be visited by the same kind of violence that they perpetrate upon their victims.
You say “Punishing everyone for the deeds of some is ass backwards. Hate will only ever beget hate.” Yet, I bet you and many of your opinion had no problem getting behind Bush when he invaded Iraq. I guess punishing everyone in Iraq was okay, while punishing all whites isn’t too good.
Still let me remind you that NO ONE is advocating killing all whites. Some of my best friends are white. Part of my heritage is white. You sound like the narcissistic group of whites that are always susceptible to the claim that the white race is under attack.
Also the “cycle of violence” you refer to is what OTWs experience every decade by white racists. What would you suggest that OTWs do to stop racist whites from terrorizing them?
Just how much “constructive conservation” do you think would have accomplished the results a few riots got in the 60′s? White men refused to give an inch if they don’t feel the fear that if they don’t something bad will happen to them.

Christine#1, The ultimate benefit of violence, when used as a last resort, is that it tells the oppressors that the victims are willing to die to prevent the continuance of that oppression.
History is full of examples of whites attempting to commit genocide on an unprecedented scale if they were not stopped by violence. The native American is a typical example of what whites will do to a people who can not by force of will stop racist whites from committing genocide.
Go tell a native American that he/she should have resorted to “constructive conversation” to get racist whites to allow them to exist as equals. 12 million native Americans were murdered by white americans. Who diminished that evil?
If I were the victim of orchestrated violence by a race, I would be satisfied with whatever stopped the violence against me, do to the hate, whether or not I could I prevent the oppressor from hating me.
What black people are talking about is not just the fact that the murderers hate them, they are talking about stoping the murders.

So unless you have a secret powerful “constructive conversation” that will stop the murder of unarmed blacks by thugs with badges, then you had just get prepared for violence to become an option by those who are rapidly becoming fed up with whites giving white racist thugs with badges a pass after they murder unarmed blacks.
If it makes you feel any better, I’m very certain that those blacks who resort to violence like ST. Micah Xavier Johnson did, will “hate” having to resort to violence to get the murders to stop.

As Jane Elliot says they will use every from of obstruction to deny they are racist do that they do not have to share power.

Christine#1&2, I am a native American. My people were almost wiped out as a human species on this planet by people you say needed only the correct dialogue to prevent what they did to more than 12 million of my people.
Do you realize that the world calls what the germans did to 6 million Jewish people a Holocaust. What would they call what white people did to my people if the people who did it had been stopped and defeated like the nazis were?
It would be a genocide of unmatched proportions. But alas the murderers won. So my people’s slaughter is glossed over and we are forgotten. The few of us left in concentration camps conveniently called “Reservations” are now given a bit of autonomy to compensate for the murder of more than 95% of my people.
The white boy didn’t accost male Native Americans in battle much, they used binoculars to observe the villages of Native American tribes. When the men left on food hunting excursions, the US calvary rode into the village and slaughter every woman and child in the village. So that when the men returned they would have no one to “breed” with. I wonder what “constructive conversation” would have stopped the murders for killing those women and children?
The whites put a $.50, fifty cent bounty on any indian scalp. It didn’t matter if the scalp came from a woman or child, Millions were killed. I wonder what “constructive conversation” would have ended the bounty put on the heads of my people?
When my people had been conquered and placed in concentration camps they were fed rotten meat, given, blankets that had been used by white people who had Small Pox, Typhoid Fever, Chicken Pox or any other viral infection. The result was massive deaths among a people who had no natural immunities to diseases they had never encountered.

I think it is better to know what you are dealing with than to frequent those blogs with regulators who “monitor (censor) for civility.”

As the first African American and first woman to serve as Attorney General of California, I know what it means to be a “first.” And as we build a winning campaign for Senate in this state, I urge you to help other women who are trying to do the same across the country.
Right now, there are just 20 women in the U.S. Senate. If I have the honor of being elected the next senator from California, I want to be able to look at my fellow colleagues and see a governing body that truly represents America.
