Hooray For Inauguration Day!
Posted by Michelle Moquin on January 20th, 2009
In a few hours from now Bush will step down and Obama will be our new president. Oh, I have looked forward to this day as many of you have for months…for years…and some for their entire lives.
Many of you including myself worked hard on this campaign giving your money, and your time, to insure that this country elected a president who cares about the earth and it’s inhabitants. I congratulate all of you for being inspired these past months and shouting, ‘No more!’, and saying, ‘Yes!’ – to hope and change.
I still think back to the day when Obama won and it will be a memorable day for me, forever. Thanks to those of you who shared it with me in person and here on my blog. Today is the day to celebrate and welcome change with open arms. We did it. Barack Obama has a huge job ahead of him. And today….and for our future, we must do our part to help him too.
When he takes his oath today what oath will you take? Obama needs not only our support but our unwavering commitment to our country. He’s going to be working his ass off….How will you work harder? What changes will you make for the environment, the animals, the children of our future? We are all in the together, and we must work at it together.
I know that he is going to need all of us backing him to prosecute Bush. With an approval rate of Obama at 84% (?), it sounds like he just may have the backing of the people to do this. Don’t assume anything. Make sure your voice is heard again. I know I will be shouting ‘my two’. Let’s establish a true government, ‘of, by, and for the people.’
We have a lot to get through in the coming months and years, but today…today I’m just going to celebrate. I will be working, but my heart and mind will be singing. I am so filled with joy.
Happy Inauguration Day! Peace & Love…
Gratefully your blog host,

I just listened to the inaugural speech and it was inspiring albeit with a few minor glitches : )
My plan: I’m sticking with my fave Gandhi quote ‘be the change you want to see in the world’ and while I still am pestered (in the nicest way possible) by people who really want to give me a ‘reality check’ (ha, thanks for the pessimism it mixes so nicely with my Pollyanna) I’m going to forge ahead and prosper (somehow, ain’t easy given my circumstances at the mo’).
Why is that important, bc when I’m flush I can share more of me, my time, my money, etc…and I think Obama’s got it right, we all need to be join in and do our part whatever that is, and be KINDER and more compassionate with one another (I’m starting with myself and moving outward).
That’s it…I’m pleased we have an articulate and intelligent man with heart and soul as our leader, no matter how bad the situation, I believe the man has got it goin’ on! – ZL

WATCH OUT FOR THE SIGNS OF A “WHISPERING STROKE”
A woman I know in her early 60s was leaving a party when she suddenly passed out. It lasted only for a brief moment, but when she came to she couldn’t talk. Her inability to speak was brief, also, though it lasted long enough for someone to call an ambulance. The ER doctor implied it was probably an alcohol-related event, but my friend knew that wasn’t the case and demanded an MRI. It was a smart move on her part — she discovered that she had indeed had a mini stroke.
WHISPERING STROKES HINT AT TROUBLE AHEAD
For years the alarm has been sounded about the danger of transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is a mini stroke with symptoms that mimic a major stroke, but that usually lasts just a few minutes to an hour or so and doesn’t typically leave long-term physical impairment. The danger is that a TIA indicates increased risk for a major stroke or for additional TIAs in the weeks and months following. But according to some researchers, there are strokes with symptoms even more subtle than a TIA… making their name, “whispering strokes,” particularly appropriate. George Howard, DrPH, chair of the department of biostatistics, University of Alabama at Birmingham, has studied these mini strokes in depth. He told me that some medical professionals have called him alarmist, but he vehemently disagrees. Now he has a study that gives evidence to back him up: In a group of nearly 22,000 men and women over age 45, 18% said they had experienced subtle symptoms of stroke, and only 58% had reported the incidents to their doctor. Dr. Howard discovered that these seemingly insignificant strokes left these men and women with slightly compromised quality of life in either physical measures (such as lowered energy) or mental functioning (such as decreased ability to express oneself verbally). Apparently these events were not entirely insignificant.
Additionally, having a stroke even as minor as a whispering one puts people at risk of a major stroke. Dr. Howard urges people to never ignore what he calls the “suddens,” however brief they may be. Call your doctor if you have any of these symptoms:
• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding.
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination without a reasonable explanation for this, such as having gotten up quickly.
Dr. Howard also points out that prevention is always preferable to treatment. Don’t smoke, do get treatment for high blood pressure and/or diabetes and make sure you exercise at least moderately. And should you, like my friend, have an unexplained event, see a doctor and insist on appropriate tests right away to determine if there is a problem.

Thank you very much for your article on the sex trade in Mexico. You are so correct about LZ. She like many beautiful women are blackmailed or threatened into selling their bodies. It is horrible what men will force women to do to enjoy a few seconds of pleasure from that usually tiny thing between their legs.

I knew President Obama would mention moslems in his speech. I bet my American friends a return taxi fare home. I won. Isn’t he a wonderful person.

President Obama is a man for the planet. He will stand for world peace and equality for all. I am proud to be an Arab woman who trusts this new American president.

Thank you for your article. We latino women are beset on all sides by funky latino men with very little regard for us. I wish you would start the elimination with them when you turn Madaline loose.

AMERICANS REVEAL TRUTH ABOUT HOW AGING AFFECTS THEIR SEX LIVES
Remember how “grossed out” you once were when you learned that your parents had sex? The reality is that while different than in their youth, lots of older Americans continue to be sexually active, despite a high rate of so-called bothersome problems.
To explore the issues surrounding intimacy as we age, I spoke with Linda J. Waite, PhD, the Lucy Flower Professor in Urban Sociology at the University of Chicago, who recently was involved in conducting a study of sex and older adults, including seniors. She assured me that sex continues to be important to many older people. Given that sales of “ED” drugs for men are so high, I was surprised to hear that the research found that most people don’t discuss these matters with their doctors. Researchers report that just 38% of men and 22% of women had spoken to their doctor about sexual health or activity since turning 50. Dr. Waite says she hopes her study will inspire more seniors to discuss sexual concerns with their doctors — and more doctors to raise the issue with older patients.
SENIORS SAY: LET’S DO IT
The researchers interviewed 3,005 men and women ages 57 to 85 years old. They found that…
• Most older people are sexually active with a partner, although the percentage declines significantly with age — 73% of those ages 57 to 64… 53% of those 65 to 74… and 26% of those 75 to 85.
• In the survey, women were more likely than men to rate sex as unimportant (35% versus 13%), and less likely overall than the men in the survey to be sexually active. Men die younger and women are less likely to have partners as they grow older, Dr. Waite notes.
• About half of sexually active seniors reported at least one bothersome sexual problem. In women, these included low desire (43%), vaginal dryness (39%) and inability to climax (34%). Men (37%) most frequently complained of erectile difficulties, and 14% of men surveyed used medication or supplements to improve function.
TALK TO YOUR PHYSICIAN
A contributor to the problem may be that doctors don’t ask older people about sexual concerns as a routine part of a visit, observes Dr. Waite. The take-home message: Don’t be shy about bringing up sexual issues with your physician. Your overall health is more relevant to sexuality than age alone… and even if you face obstacles relating to the passing of the years, these can often be addressed so you can enjoy a fuller and more satisfying sex life… at any age.
