Obama’s Plan To Prevent States From Defunding Planned Parenthood

Good morning! How is everyone? Happy to see all of you here. 😘

Did you know that Obama’s approval rating is over 50%? As it should be because he continues to  move forward and get stuff done – this is no lame duck president. If he can get this rule approved, I would love to add that feather in our beloved president Obama’s hat, thank you.

From Daily Kos:

President Obama moves to permanently protect Planned Parenthood funding

GettyImages-583837110

Planned Parenthood has been winning in the courts in 2016, as state after Republican-led state has tried to cripple the organization by defunding clinics. Now the Obama administration is stepping in to attempt to short-circuit those lawsuits with a proposed rule reinforcing existing law, preventing states from defunding Planned Parenthood or any other family planning provider for political reasons.

The proposed rule says that states cannot withhold Title X federal family planning funds from providers for any reason other than their “ability to deliver services to program beneficiaries in an effective manner.” This would essentially make the same laws that apply to Medicaid—states can’t pick and choose providers the federal funds go to in the absence of fraud—apply specifically to Title X funding. Bottom line: if the rule is approved, states could no longer bar Planned Parenthood funding because some of its clinics provide abortions.

“This will make a real difference in so many people’s lives,” said Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards:

“The Obama Administration is protecting access to health care for millions of people. Women in nearly half the states in this country have faced political attacks on cancer screenings, birth control, and other basic care. This rule makes it clear that politicians cannot ignore the law as they pursue their agenda to stop women from getting the care they need.

Title X is a key program in providing necessary basic preventive care as well as birth control coverage to about 4 million low-income Americans, with about one-third of those patients getting care from Planned Parenthood. It uses that Title X funding, along with the Medicaid funds it receives, to provide subsidized birth control, and screening for and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Speaking of sexually transmitted diseases and Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood: Zika.

In Little Haiti, Liberty City, and a number of other neighborhoods in Miami, canvassers are now walking door to door to spread the word about the risks of Zika, one household at a time — hoping to reach 25, 000 people the next six weeks. In some neighborhoods, these workers aren’t sponsored by federal or state health agencies, but by Planned Parenthood.

Lillian Tamayo, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida, told NPR that Miami-Dade County has the state’s largest population of people without health coverage, which leaves these residents particularly vulnerable to Zika. “More than one-third of Florida does not have an OB-GYN,” she said. “It also is among the worst states in the country for women’s health and women’s well-being. And it has staggering infection rates for sexually transmitted diseases. And now we have Zika.”

The proposed rule, which will become permanent after a 30-day comment period, wouldn’t stop a terrible Republican Congress from trying to keep public health funds away from Planned Parenthood—nor would it stop horror shows like the current House Republican “investigation” that’s endangering Planned Parenthood staff and fetal tissue researchers, but it would stop governors like Florida’s Rick Scott from doing it. So we need to take care of the Republican congressional horror show.

Readers: Thank you, president Obama for all you do for women. Women’s health has always been a priority for Obama. It’s always been a priority for Hillary too. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Speaking of health, with respect to Clinton’s bout of pneumonia, most every politician gets sick on the campaign trail. With their constant running schedules from city to city and shaking hands, kissing, and contracting who know what, it’s surprising they don’t get sick more often, not to mention dehydrated and exhausted.

The difference between Clinton and Trump is that pneumonia is a treatable sickness and will pass, unlike Trump’s sicknesses of serial lying, misogynist comments, racist meme tweets…need I go on?…Cause I can very easily.

It’s your turn to do the talking. Something to say?

  1. June Says:

Good luck with that Obama. The republicans don’t give a damn about the needs of women. And the women republicans are so easily manipulable that they wont raise a whimper about their loss until it is too late.

And then they will go back to begging male legislatures to give them a break.

  2. Jeriah Says:

Abortion makes women cheap, accessible, and exchangeable to non caring men, who apparently could care less for her, her children, or her future.

    https://youtu.be/cO1ifNaNABY

It is a denial of a woman’s rights to be protected, respected, and treated as a woman.

  3. Irene Says:

Feminists don’t want special treatment, they want equal treatment. If someone gives you special treatment on account of your gender, you would feel pretty patronised and belittled, right? It’s the same way feminists feel as well. That’s why they don’t like special treatment.

  4. Kurt Says:

i mean you can do whatever you want that isn’t against the law. no one is telling women they HAVE to have sex. it’s just men nowadays say that if you don’t give sex then you’ll never get marriage, and that isn’t sexism because women could say the same if they wanted to… they just don’t… which kinda proves that treating both the same way won’t work cus honestly men and women don’t want the same things.

  5. Mark Says:

It’s sad that these days women feel like they have to put out to keep a man they like interested. I try to tell my friends that are women to make him wait. The guys that really like you will stick around and the ones that just want some booty will disappear.

Also, stop giving head to every guy you have sex with unless you’re in a committed relationship. Head is not going to make a guy keep talking to you. It’s a lot of women out here willing to give head. I can’t remember the last time I had sex and the woman didn’t give me head.

No man wants to marry a woman who’s sucked off every guy she’s been with. That’s just nasty I don’t care what society thinks about oral sex. What are you going to save for your husband?

  6. Hilary Says:

If a woman gives sex. Shes a keeper. I think the real problem is that men have to pay to keep a woman around. Because if a man is going to have to pay to woo a woman.

Then he has every right to have sex with other women as well. When was the last time a woman had to buy a man’s affection by buying him gifts, free dinners, and jewelry. If a woman did do that. Then shes clearly a keeper. Because thats the kind of woman that knows what she wants.

  7. Glen Says:

Jeriah#2, that video presented a complex subject in an oversimplified, and ultimately misleading, manner. It’s conclusion is way off base.

  8. Adrian Says:

The Right deliberately sponsor videos like these to generate and promote a lot of misinformation.

They are the sick bastards who would use anything or anyone to promote their version of morality.

  9. Corra Says:

Jeriah#2, That ws a sad video which shows how people “use” each other for their own benefit. The video assumes that this happens even in loving relationships.

How about having the departure point starting from love, sacrifice and wanting what is best for your partner instead of the manipulative, power hungry and controlling relationships that this video is portraying.

Pity that a religious agency such as this has resorted to dehumanizing something as beautiful as a loving relationship where sex is a part of the connection that the man/woman has in uniting two fleshes into one.

  10. Andrew Says:

I LOVE President Obama – a true champion of women’s rights. And human rights.

  11. Jim Says:

I got my vasectomy at Planned Parenthood. It was the best experience with a health care office I’ve ever had. They do more to prevent pregnancy (and therefore, abortion) than any pastor.

  12. Jim N Says:

I love that our President is not afraid to fight for women’s rights. Up your’s Republicans… you will never get my vote. Straight ticket for me with great pleasure.

  13. John Says:

Jim#12, It’s called women having rights to be promiscuous without morals. Mess up and get pregnant. Then go get a free abortion. Because remember, that baby inside of you has no rights…and it never will.

  14. Godfrey Says:

That’s the guy I voted for TWICE. Now Mrs. Clinton has an easier time to protect this bill.

  15. Mary Says:

Vote Democratic up and down the ballot

  16. Kathy Says:

Thanks. With a rich country such as ours, it is embarrassing to have high maternal mortality rates and such a high number of STDs.

  17. Lynn Says:

John#13, You DO realize they screen for cancer & STD’s for BOTH men & women, right? It’s called “PLANNED Parenthood” for a reason, too. So a woman can avoid an unwanted pregnancy so they don’t NEED an abortion.

  18. Thelma Says:

John#13, spoken like a man who’s never used contraceptive pills. Please go do some research.

No birth control pill or method is 100% foolproof! There are legions of true stories of women, INCLUDING DEVOTED MARRIED WOMEN, who follow their doctor’s prescription precisely…and still get pregnant.

There are married women who do everything right, who cannot afford another child, and who receive abortions. Please wake up and join the 21st century.

Learn about all the reasons birth control AND abortions are needed as choices, sometimes even to save the life of the mother.

  19. Peggy Says:

This is just wonderful! So tired of them always trying and threatening to defund this very important service. Thank you Mr Obama!!

  20. Karen Says:

About time! Thank you, Mr. President, for defending the women (and men) of America right up to the last few weeks. You will be so missed.

  21. Kristina Says:

Women’s health should NEVER be used as a political tool. The fact that the Republicans continue to try to cut women’s health funding is offensive and repulsive.

Abortion is a symptom of a larger problem and that is unintended pregnancies. I refuse to discuss the topic of abortion until we address unintended pregnanies.

You’d think the Republicans would back family planning as a way to cut welfare and medicaid costs, but no, they are too busy trying to legislate a woman’s body.

  22. Thelma Says:

Just in time. Reportedly, the Senate’s bill to provide funding to fight Zika infections includes a provision DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD in return!

These Republicans are seemingly incapable of seeing the connection between the work of Planned Parenthood, the need for birth control which PP provides, and the disastrous effects of Zika on families for their entire lives, with each Zika baby costing about $10 MILLION DOLLARS TO RAISE DUE TO ITS BIRTH DEFECTS.

Republicans in the Senate are not only living in the 18th century, but they are tone-deaf to the health crises going on right under their noses.

  23. Mary Says:

Thank God! What are we going to do without this guy? If Trump becomes president, it’s OVER America. Make sure you get out and vote, for Hillary and every Dem.

  24. Rafael Says:

President Obama & I are both half & half so I was on his side day one. I see a strong disciplined man who projects calmness, maturity, thoughtfulness, good humor & I view him as one of the most intelligent & capable, period.

America would have benefited tremendously if the treasonous republicans had done their jobs & their gullible minions acquired the critical thinking skills required to learn how to stop hating & see that they are contemptuously‌‌ used by the pols who exchange an autograph for their vote.

President Obama is eminently qualified & capable except for that pigment thingie. Angry hateful people are destructive……Proceed Mr. Trump…

  25. Kay Says:

Please explain to me how preventing contraception services, causes abortions?

Women living at a poverty level income – or less – do NOT have funds for either doctors or contraception meds. Assuming that men will use contraception has been proven a joke.

For men in state legislators to defund Planned Parenthood is not only stupid, it is dangerous to womens’ lives. I know – I lived it the years my husband was in college. I had to purchase contraception at $60 a month – because my husband thought condoms were ‘icky’.

Since I was supporting him and both my children with the only job in the family, it was just so necessary and so hard to make up those missing funds. Then a lady I worked with told me told me to go to Planned

Parenthood and they could hime with my pills. I went, they did, and tho it was decades ago – I remember what a life-saver they were to my family.

Yes, contraception is covered by insurance these days, but it also requires insurance. People. Stop fooling yourself that Planned Parenthood is the Grim Reaper in disguise. Planned Parenthood SAVES lives.

  26. Alan Says:

Such a sad state of affairs that this is even NEEDED. If our representatives weren’t so adamant about keeping certain minorities, genders, races and religions “in their place”, and would quit writing and passing spiteful laws designed to force their opinions (never based upon any factual data) on those they wish to subjugate.

It’s time we begin to elect representation in direct proportion to those they are supposed to be representing. When the Senate and house are 52% women, 33% minorities and just 5% older white men, maybe things will begin to look up for all of us. And of course, when they aren’t bought and paid for by special interests.

  27. Todd Says:

One wonders how serious the GOP really is about cutting off funding to PP. They control the federal budget.

They could simply carve out separate spending bills for such spending as Title X programs, insert a rider that none of the money may be used by states to fund Planned Parenthood (a la the recurring ACORN prohibition) separate from “mission critical” parts of the budget, and allow Obama to veto it and thereby eliminate all Title X spending, without causing a government shut down, or force Dems in the Senate to filibuster the spending altogether.

Surely this has occurred to a policy wonk like Ryan. I’m thinking the leadership really prefers to keep it funded so they have a convenient bogey man to lather up the masses.

  28. Yasimine Says:

THANKYOU OBAMA! :)))) for protecting us! This makes me feel so happy and protected as I’m moving towards becoming a young woman in this country!

A young woman who wants to plan my own life and health. I am so happy things are starting to change in order to protects a women’s right to her body.

  29. Jean Says:

Why do Republicans keep picking on Planned Parenthood? It seems to be their pet project. They have no intention to really ban abortions in America, because if they ever did, they would lose one of their favorite talking points.

  30. Pat Says:

Our life is short on this earth. Yet you have republicans who wants us to go through hell before breathing out last breath. I will use my last breath on this earth to fight these hypocrites for any American who believes in freedom and humanity.

  31. Karen Says:

Great decision. As a poor med student, I used to get my primary care from PP. I have strong positive memories of the care they provided to anyone who showed up to their doors.

  32. Angela Says:

Jean#29, Correct! They need the talking point to continue to blow smoke up the asses of their followers. Tell em’ what they want to hear and they’ll kindly pay you back with a vote that keeps you in your high profile job.

  33. Kelly Says:

President Obama has been a champion for women throughout his entire presidency. God help us all if another Republican takes the White House.

Their war on women is very real. As for reasons there are many: patriarchy, distracting from their wealthy donors stealing our country’s resources and income…it’s a long list.

  34. Patricia Says:

Why do Republicans including Republican women hate other women. Abortion is not the major reason for Planned Parenthood.

Actually Planned Parenthood has supplied enough education about contraception until abortions have gone down dramatically. And with zika not being handled by Congress Planned Parenthood is working with mothers and women to fight the infection.

It will be great to see this issue taken off the table so Congress can do real work.

  35. Eve Says:

GOPERS think women should be pregnant in the kitchen. No exceptions. Planned Parenthood gets in the way of that idea.

How can the GOP survive without breeding more voters, and they pray daily for more white ones since minorities loathe them.

  36. Larry Says:

Very simply the ONLY solution is to get rid of every member of the Fascist Party of America (GOP) in ALL governments and their radical evangelical supporters that have made the Republican Party NO LONG a political party but a religious party. Tax the hell out of them.

  37. David Says:

The ONLY scandal involving PP is the false scandal created by Conservatives. State after state has investigated and cleared EVERY clinic. The most they could do was find a state where the disposal of remains had been approved by letter from the state health Dept, but the state changed the rule and didn’t tell the clinic.

  38. Kay Says:

Oops, I pulled a Zen Lill! I meant sanctimonious not parsimonious. That’s what you get for using big words before you think:-) but maybe they are parsimonious too:-)

  39. Scarlett Says:

Kay, you pulled a Kay. Leave Zen Lill the fuck alone.

  40. Kay Says:

Scarlett, I apologize to you and to Zen Lill, I didn’t mean the mistake that I corrected I meant that I had not even printed it before I apologized.

Here is what I meant to print with the correction.

Eve#35, most of the voters being bred are democrats. I’m surprised that they don’t seem to get that. Republican men are either busy picking up men in bathrooms or are so sanctimonious no woman would have sex with them:-) I’m thinking of Ted Cruz when I say that. Even his own daughter doesn’t want to be near him.

  41. Tanya Says:

This is a great solution to address states trying to take away women’s heath care by targeting Planned Parenthood. Obama has done so much for women in this country!

  42. Zen Lill Says:

Proud of Obama for taking care of business till the end. The only reason why I said I wish we could have him one more year is bc I think this election is insane, running such a competent candidate against Trump who has no idea what he’s doing in the political arena (regardless of businessman years) is ludicrous, and the fact that racists/bigots are almost evening out the polling numbers is crazy. I blame the tea party for making the gop into a worst joke than it already was…the GOP is just O and not the good O the OLD O.

#11 Jim, right, they (PP) help all people get what they need to contain unwanted pregnancies, period. Vasectomies, BC pills, other contraceptives and cancer scanning etc…it’s a life saver overall and needs to be funded, period.
See #25 Kay, it’s a joke to put (MOST but not ALL) men in charge of BC, that’s like putting monkeys in charge of bananas, lol, know why? Because they don’t get pregnant i.e. they don’t truly give a shit, their lives don’t change or take on a whole new trajectory. PP helps even when you have no insurance. Kay, pulling a ‘Zen Lill’ I’m assuming means predictive text screwed up your intended statement but yeah, take your own ownership of that.
#39 Scarlett, thank you for the back up : )

#13 John, you are way off base so no further commentary to you.

Colin from the other day, I go in the rabbit hole alone, it’s special me time, you want to send in an application for anything else, that’s fine, and I enjoy reviewing them : ) after 8 years, I’ve given my darlin’ a soft landing, hasta la luv ya but gotta go.

All of the commentary above about when a woman should have sex or ‘saving head for marriage’ and all else is just nonsense, people are people and we are not far off from chimp behavior, in fact, Bonobos, cheaters that they are, are similar in dynamics to human relationships, there are studies done all the time on this, they could just call me and save some bucks : )
….yep, get with it, people will always have sex, so get over it, it’s biological.
And yes, women tend to date/sex/marry up and men can be more casual and indiscreet and usually are because they don’t get pregnant, there’s less at stake, and they *usually* don’t display signs of STD’s they just pass em’ along, if you want to get into morality of sex before/only after marriage I’ll leave you to your sunday school meeting.

Men who have sex with many used to be called studs, now in my circle they’re called man ho’s and it ain’t a compliment. (and either distinction doesn’t mean their good at what they do ; )

Men and Women can both use a dose of ‘being more choosy’ with their partners.

I’ll leave it at that, till later…

    Luv, Zen Lill

  43. Zen Lill Says:

    Kay, no apology necessary, I don’t get offended easily. : ) ~ZL

  44. Barcelona Says:

Bonobo behavior isn’t cheating ZZZ. I wouldn’t suggest sitting by the phone.

Although the incest and convenience of the nearest partner mentality may be similar to humans Bonobos make no secret of their lusty behavior and indeed it is very out in the open. Further orgies with young and old, family or not, are often the norm. And they go all day long.

It would be nice if humans were that transparent.

Let’s clear up that idea that frequent and multiple partners equals the definition of cheater too can we ?

  45. Eric Says:

There is no such thing as a “Rape Culture”, as that would indicate that we are a society which encourages and accepts rape; which we don’t.

If a guy is guilty, then he is a terrible person, but it didn’t have to do with an imaginary “culture”.

  46. Raven Says:

Eric#45, Rape culture *is*. Telling a woman that she should expect to be raped if she dresses a certain way because that is accepting rape.

Telling a young girl that “boys are only after one thing, you need to protect yourself, and what kind of message are you sending if you dress like that” and “boys can’t control themselves, you shouldn’t make them think they have a chance if they don’t” is accepting rape.

Telling girls that if they wear shorts to school they’ll be a distraction to the boys and they must be sent home as punishment (double whammy as they’re saying that boys can’t control themselves and that the boys’ education is more important than yours in this case) is accepting rape.

Blaming women for the deplorable actions of men is accepting rape. Eric that, is rape culture. Wake up, that is all around you.

When I walk into a bar and look at a man and say “you’re very tall” and he picks me up (in the air) by grabbing my ass and pushing me against him, and no one bats an eye and one person actually says to me “he’s drunk.

Of course he’s going to think you’re coming on to him when you comment on his height” (what?!?) is rape culture.

Michelle I am in total agreement ! I love our president and I say that even though I haven’t loved all his decisions in total honesty.

There’s so much hoopla from the trumpanzees about Hilary’s health I find it funny. All of a sudden republicans are concerned about a woman’s health !

Our President shows them how it’s done!

  48. SuzyQ Says:

One more thing. Several news outlets reported Hillary Clinton as deceased ! Her body double being spotted added fuel to the conspiracy theories.

Pneumonia is very serious though no bones about it. I sure hope Mrs. Clinton is getting some much needed rest.

    I wish her well.

Barcelona, I will stand by your correction, I dislike the word cheating on any grounds really, we’re usually don’t ask don’t tell complicit. Transparency would be great but humans want/need to play games in our current society structure (look at all the judgements women would go through by the comments up there ^) and I don’t wait by phones, sweetheart, lolzzzz, never have and never will need to, but thanks for offering up your two cents : D

Just an up date on your “Monday Money Madness” article Michelle. It financial industry is still rewarding what they claim is behavior they don’t condone.

“When Tolstedt leaves Wells Fargo later this year, on top of the $1.7 million in salary she has received over the past few years, she will be walking away with $124.6 million in stock, options, and restricted Wells Fargo shares. Some of that hasn’t vested yet. But Tolstedt gets to keep all of it because she technically retired.”

WELLS FARGO EXEC WHO HEADED PHONY ACCOUNTS UNIT COLLECTED $125 MILLION
Wells Fargo & Co’s WFC -0.37% “sandbagger”-in-chief is leaving the giant bank with an enormous pay day—$124.6 million.
In fact, despite beefed-up “clawback” provisions instituted by the bank shortly after the financial crisis, and the recent revelations of massive misconduct, it does not appear that Wells Fargo is requiring Carrie Tolstedt, the Wells Fargo executive who was in charge of the unit where employees opened more than 2 million largely unauthorized customer accounts—a seemingly routine practice that employees internally referred to as “sandbagging”—to give back any of her nine-figure pay.
On Thursday, Wells Fargo WFC -0.37% agreed to pay $185 million, including the largest penalty ever imposed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to settle claims that that it defrauded its customers. The bank’s shareholders will ultimately have to swallow the cost of that settlement. The bank also said it had fired 5,300 employees over five years related to the bad behavior.
Tolstedt, however, is walking away from Wells Fargo with a very full bank account—and praise. In the July announcement of her exit, which made no mention of the soon-to-be-settled case, Wells Fargo’s CEO John Stumpf said Tolstedt had been one of the bank’s most important leaders and “a standard-bearer of our culture” and “a champion for our customers.”

Hillary Clinton death hoax spreads on Facebook

Rumors of the politician’s alleged demise gained traction on Monday after a ‘R.I.P. Hillary Clinton’ Facebook page attracted nearly one million of ‘likes’. Those who read the ‘About’ page were given a believable account of the American politician’s passing:

“At about 11 a.m. ET on Monday (September 12, 2016), our beloved politician Hillary Clinton passed away. Hillary Clinton was born on October 26, 1947 in Chicago. She will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.”
Hundreds of fans immediately started writing their messages of condolence on the Facebook page, expressing their sadness that the talented 68-year-old politician was dead. And as usual, Twittersphere was frenzied over the death hoax.

Where as some trusting fans believed the post, others were immediately skeptical of the report, perhaps learning their lesson from the huge amount of fake death reports emerging about celebrities over recent months. Some pointed out that the news had not been carried on any major American network, indicating that it was a fake report, as the death of a politician of Hillary Clinton’s stature would be major news across networks.

A recent poll conducted for the Celebrity Post shows that a large majority (82%) of respondents think those Hillary Clinton death rumors are not funny anymore.

Sharing this powerful piece from Garrison Kiellor

. I saw Hillary once working a rope line for more than an hour, a Secret Service man holding her firmly by the hips as she leaned over the rope and reached into the mass of arms and hands reaching out to her. She had learned the art of encountering the crowd and making it look personal. It was not glamorous work, more like picking fruit, and it took the sort of discipline your mother instills in you: those people waited to see you so by gosh you can treat them right.

So it’s no surprise she pushed herself to the point of collapse the other day. What’s odd is the perspective, expressed in several stories, that her determination to keep going reveals a “lack of transparency” —- that she should’ve announced she had pneumonia and gone home and crawled into bed.

I’ve never gone fishing with her, which is how you really get to know someone, but I did sit next to her at dinner once, one of those stiff dinners that is nobody’s idea of a wild good time, the conversation tends to be stilted, everybody’s beat, you worry about spilling soup down your shirtfront. She being First Lady led the way and she being a Wellesley girl, the way led upward. We talked about my infant daughter and schools and about Justice Blackmun, and I said how inspiring it was to sit and watch the Court in session, and she laughed and said, “I don’t think it’d be a good idea for me to show up in a courtroom where a member of my family might be a defendant.” A succinct and witty retort. And she turned and bestowed her attention on Speaker Dennis Hastert, who was sitting to her right. She focused on him and even made him chuckle a few times. I was impressed by her smarts, even more by her discipline.

I don’t have that discipline. Most people don’t. Politics didn’t appeal to me back in my youth, the rhetoric (“Ask not what your country can do for you”) was so wooden compared to “so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past,” so I walked dark rainy streets imagining the great novel I wouldn’t write and was still trying to be cool and indifferent well into my thirties, when other people were making a difference in the world.

Hillary didn’t have a prolonged adolescence and fiction was not her ambition. She doesn’t do dreaminess. What some people see as a relentless quest for power strikes me as the good habits of a serious Methodist. Be steady. Don’t give up. It’s not about you. Work for the night is coming.

The woman who does not conceal her own intelligence is a fine American tradition, going back to Anne Bradstreet and Harriet Beecher Stowe and my ancestor Prudence Crandall, but none has been subjected to the steady hectoring that Mrs. Clinton has. She is the first major-party nominee to be pictured in prison stripes by the opposition. She is the first cabinet officer ever to be held personally responsible for her own email server, something ordinarily delegated to anonymous nerds in I.T. The fact that terrorists attacked an American compound in Libya under cover of darkness when Secretary Clinton presumably got some sleep has been held against her, as if she personally was in command of the defense of the compound, a walkie-talkie in her hand, calling in air strikes.

Extremism has poked its head into the mainstream, aided by the Internet. Back in the day, you occasionally saw cranks on a street corner handing out mimeographed handbills arguing that FDR was responsible for Pearl Harbor, but you saw their bad haircuts, the bitterness in their eyes, and you turned away. Now they’re in your computer, whispering that the economy is on the verge of collapse and for a few bucks they’ll tell you how to protect your savings. But lacking clear evidence, we proceed forward. We don’t operate on the basis of lurid conjecture.

Someday historians will get this right and look back at the steady pitter-pat of scandals that turned out to be nothing, nada, zero and ixnay and will conclude that, almost a century after women’s suffrage, almost 50 years after Richard Nixon signed Title IX into law, a woman was required to run for office wearing concrete shoes. Check back fifty years from now and if I’m wrong, go ahead and dance on my grave.
