Not Your Typical Tea Party

Posted by Michelle Moquin on April 16th, 2009

I was just saying to Zen Lill yesterday that as much as I miss when I open my blog and there are no comments ( except from ZL – thank you :), I am a bit relieved because you know how I like to address everyone. And then to no surprise, because it does happen quite often, I wake up to a slew of comments and I am rushing to read them all before I post the daily.

It seems that many of you have ‘TEA parties’ on your mind, aka: ‘Tax Enough Already’.  I noticed from watching the news  that most who are outraged are….no surprise, ‘white’, and most likely part of that 55% that didn’t want Obama to be our president. Just where were these people when Bush was spending trillions? No need to answer; we know.

People at these TEA parties are protesting wasteful spending and yet they go and buy 1 million tea bags! – ok and that is not a waste? And FOX claims that they are not sponsoring the ‘TEA parties’; that they are just covering them.  Ah….isn’t that what sponsorship is?

I really don’t have much more to say, as you all have said it so well.  However, I will end it with this video. Anonymous #12 posted this yesterday, (thank you) and if you didn’t click on the link that he left for everyone, I urge you to watch it now. It is truly sickening that people feel this way about our President and believe the things that they believe. People will convince themselves of anything just to hide behind their racism.

~~~~~~~~~
Barbara:  My pleasure. I’m delighted that it inspired a conversation between you and your parents.
Peter: And I thought the pythons were going to be a problem.  This is way more serious, and out of control.  I didn’t get the chance to read your post thoroughly this morning but like all of the other comments I will take time this afternoon when I can read them more than just a quick peruse.
Readers: Feel free to chime in….seems there is a lot of banter out there that wants to be heard.
Gratefully your blog host,
    ONE NIGHT OF BAD SLEEP CAUSES INFLAMMATORY DAMAGE
    Do you know anyone who feels well-rested and sleeps great? I’m not sure I do, yet it’s a proven fact that adequate sleep is essential to optimal health. Sleeping gives the brain time to process thoughts and replenish invaluable neurotransmitters… allows time for damaged tissues to heal… heightens reflexes and alertness… and helps ward off anxiety and depression. Conversely, a lack of sleep can lead to a greater vulnerability to accidents and disease and, new research affirms, triggers inflammation that can contribute to cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes and other ailments.
    HOW TOSSING & TURNING HARMS HEALTH
    In previous studies, scientists found that sleep deprivation increases inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor and C-reactive protein. At UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, Michael R. Irwin, MD, and his colleagues set out to measure whether sleep loss affects another inflammatory marker — nuclear factor (NF)-kB, which plays a key role in activating inflammatory pathways and contributing to inflammation-related diseases.
    The investigators measured blood levels of NF-kB in 14 healthy adults (seven men and seven women) after a normal night’s sleep (average 7.5 hours)… after one night of partial sleep deprivation (participants were kept awake from 11 pm to 3 am)… and then again the night after sleep deprivation (which was the second night after baseline), following an additional night of catch-up or recovery sleep. They found that even modest sleep loss can contribute to inflammatory disorders in the following ways…
    The activation of inflammatory NF-kB pathways was significantly greater after partial sleep deprivation than following nights of normal or recovery sleep.
    Most inflammatory increases diminished after the subsequent night of recovery sleep.
    The inflammatory response was significant in women, but not in men… a conclusion that clearly calls for further study and investigation.
    REST, REPAIR
    Sleep loss leads to an increase in stress hormones, such as norepinephrine, that in turn causes inflammation, Dr. Irwin explains. The best strategy, of course, is to practice good sleep hygiene and maintain a regular sleep schedule.
    Second best, but still very helpful, is to make sure you get extra rest the next night, as that will help soothe inflammation. Remember, too, that though everyone has some sleepless nights, generally speaking, regular habits help to reinforce sleep depth and breadth. Room lighting and ambient noise can affect quality of sleep. Avoiding sweets around bedtime, getting moderate exercise each day, maintaining good digestion and nutrient intake, including calcium and B-vitamin rich foods, are also helpful in supporting normal sleep. If you are chronically short of sleep, consider asking a naturopathic physician for help healing the inflammatory damage.
    The next time you feel guilty about hitting the sack early, think of it this way: You’re not wasting time — you’re giving your body a head start to meet tomorrow’s challenges with renewed vigor and ability.
    Save the Obama’s Garden!
    Tell chemical companies to back off.
    Dear william,
    We recently learned that the chemical industry is angry at First Lady Michelle Obama for NOT spraying toxic chemicals on her family’s garden. We were dumbfounded by this, and so were our friends at CREDO. This is all part of a campaign started by the chemical industry to convince America that we need chemicals to grow food. CREDO has been working hard to show support for the First Lady and tell the chemical companies to back off.
    Show your support by signing their petition.
    The pesticide peddlers are not happy with Michelle Obama.
    The Mid America CropLife Association (MACA) represents chemical companies that produce pesticides, and they are angry that – wait for it – Michelle Obama isn’t using chemicals in her organic garden at the White House.
    We are not making this up.
    Since Saturday, over 50,000 people have joined our campaign against the pesticide company lobbyists attacking Michelle Obama’s organic garden. Help us get to 75,000! Join the fight against pesticide company lobbyists by clicking here.
    In an email MACA sent to its supporters, a spokesman wrote, “While a garden is a great idea, the thought of it being organic made [us] shudder1.” MACA went on to publish a letter it had sent to the First Lady asking her to consider using chemicals – or what they call “crop protection products” – in her garden.
    Michelle Obama has done America a great service by publicizing the importance of nutritious food for kids (she’s growing the garden in partnership with a local elementary school class) as well as locally grown produce as an important, environmentally sustainable food source.
    MACA’s letter is part of a larger propaganda effort to convince people that chemicals are a necessary part of produce growth – when we know that’s not true.
    Click here to tell the MACA board that we support Michelle Obama’s organic garden, and we’ll thank them to keep their propaganda out of it.
    Please, take action and then tell your friends. And thank you for working to build a more organic world.
    $40M fuel theft from Army prompts global manhunt
    (Published April 16, 2009)
    ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Authorities are searching the globe for suspects in the theft of $40 million worth of fuel from a U.S. Army base in Iraq.
    The thefts occurred in 2007 and 2008 from Camp Liberty in Baghdad.One person, former Army contractor Lee Dubois of Lexington, S.C., has already pleaded guilty and faces up to 10 years in prison. A sentencing hearing scheduled for Thursday was postponed.
    A second suspect was arrested January in Guam and awaits indictment from a federal grand jury in Alexandria.
    Court records indicate that other suspects in the theft ring have scattered around the world and that Dubois has been cooperating with investigators to locate them.
    The thieves used fraudulent paperwork to withdraw tens of thousands of gallons per day from the base.
    Report: Home prices plunge
    BY AGNES E. DONATO • PACIFIC DAILY NEWS • APRIL 17, 2009
    Median real estate prices for single-family homes on Guam dropped by $62,000 in the first quarter of 2009, compared to the prior quarter, according to a top real estate firm.
    The volume of real estate sales on Guam also dropped to record-low levels during the first quarter of 2009, the Captain Real Estate Group reported in a newsletter Wednesday.
    According to Captain Real Estate, the median price for a single-family home fell 28 percent over the past three months, settling at $160,000.
    But the company believes the sharp decline is an exception, rather than an indicator of a new, downward trend.
    “During the end of the 2008 and the beginning of this year, there was so much fear and uncertainty. People were unwilling to make major financial commitments (such as buying or selling a house),” Nick Captain, president of the Captain Real Estate Group, said yesterday.
    The company newsletter stated the sellers are still optimistic enough about the market to keep firm about their prices.
    “The opportunity to buy at a discount requires a seller under duress because prevailing market sentiment reflects strong price appreciation potential once the military build-up commences. Guam real estate investors, for the most part, have shifted into a ‘hold’ mode and those forced to sell remain quite rare,” the newsletter said.
    Sales Volume Drops
    According to Captain Real Estate, total quarterly sales of Guam real estate plunged to $36.3 million. That reflected the lowest sales activity in six years and mirrored activity during the 2000 to 2003 downturn period.
    The real estate company in its newsletter also said only 115 home units were sold during the first quarter of 2009, the slowest pace since 2002.
    Condominium sales activity showed a similar weakness with only 25 units sold, the lowest since 2002, the newsletter stated. However, the median price of a condominium unit remained relatively firm at $135,000, it added.
    Recovery By 2010
    Despite the current bleak condition, Captain Real Estate expressed optimism that the real estate market will go back to normal by early 2010.
    The company newsletter stated that Guam’s market should pick up much faster than Hawaii or mainland markets. It explained that while Hawaii and the mainland suffer from poor economy and a lack of available capital, Guam’s problem stems from “a combination of fear, uncertainty and a dearth of foreign investment.”
    Captain Real Estate also said the military buildup activity is expected to create jobs and fuel immigration and foreign investment by next year. In addition, Guam banks include some of the nation’s strongest and the mortgage crisis here has been “mostly tame,” it said in the newsletter.
    “The fear and uncertainty impacting Guam’s real estate market is already waning, and excitement and opportunity will likely fill the void,” the company newsletter stated.
    I come from one of those small towns that was mentioned on your blog yesterday. Our men kept us in the dark about other races. We were indoctrinated to feel less if we took up with men of other races, especially black men. How they hate it that one is now the President of the United States of America. It is harder now to sell that bigotry that they will never amount to nothing.
    Isn’t it refreshing to see that someone other than a white man can make this country great? After almost 300 years of their mismanagement, we may finally get it right. All it took was real integration. Something those other 43 Presidents would never have thought of. They were too busy keeping the job for themselves.
    Next time it will be a woman’s turn. Not just any woman, but one qualified like Mr Obama to lead with intelligence and integrity. We can wait until this extraordinary man has served his full eight years. But then we should settle for nothing less than a qualified woman.
    Wouldn’t it be nice if Catholic women would say the same to the Pope. Those men have had it all to themselves ten times longer than the white men here. And they have messed up the service of serving in God’s name ten times worst than the white boys have here.
    When I read yesterday’s comment about the ex bishop from Paraguay, I made a promise to myself that as a catholic woman, I would contribute nothing financially to that bastion of corruption and hypocrisy until a woman is a priest.
    Where are my sisters on this?
    Thanks to your complaints about the Guam Airport Authority removing the memorial to our fallen to make room for more ads, we got this hypocritical reply from them.
    ____________________________________
    Guam – The Guam Airport Auhtoriy has released a statement affirming their support of Guam service men and women who have fallen in the line of duty. The statement is in reaction to the removal of a memorial banners that were recently taken down at the airport.
    According to a statement from the Airprot Authority, ”Concerns have been raised over the de-installation of banners commemorating the Fallen Heroes of the War of Enduring Freedom previously displayed in the East Ticket Lobby of the Airport. ”
    “The Airport is very cognizant of the pain and suffering of the families, friends and service organizations in the War of Enduring Freedom, which inspired us to participate in this special 63rd Liberation Day event to pay tribute to the Fallen Heroes of Micronesia,” stated Chairman Martin H. Gerber.   “After two years of prominent display, our intention is to present these very personal and significant keepsakes to the family members of the fallen brave who are enormously impacted by the loss of their loved ones. It is our further intention to create a special memorial piece that will have a permanent place at the airport.”
    Management and staff remain fully supportive of all those who have sacrificed and are committed to serve to protect our freedom.  In coordination with the Family Readiness Groups from the various branches of the military, the Airport is a proud host of arrivals and departures ceremonies of deployed troops, Heroes Return Services, and special de-commissioning activities at the Airport.  The Airport was also the first GovGuam Agency to receive the “Minuteman Award”, the highest honor bestowed on an organization recognizing exceptional achievement, patriotic acts and outstanding contribution to a military organization in early 2008.
    “This is the People’s Airport, and we have deep respect for the service of all our deployed sons and daughters of Micronesia,” stated Carlos Salas.  “We have prominently displayed the banners as a tribute to our local Heroes, and are now preparing the pictorial banners to present as gifts to the families.  Unfortunately, our action has been misinterpreted and we regret that many people were inadvertently offended by our action.”
    A special presentation ceremony of the Fallen Heroes banners is being coordinated to coincide with the upcoming 2009 Liberation Day Activities.  Coordination and making contact with the families has commenced for a renewed Micronesian Heroes Tribute Ceremony in the 2nd week of July 2009.
    All interested parties are encouraged to contact the Airport Marketing office at 646-0300/1/2 for information on the project.
    President Obama is backing down to the CIA. He is allowing them and others to get away with having tortured by saying they will not be tried for obeying orders.
    The nazis said that they shouldn’t be prosecuted for gassing the Jews because they were ordered to. Since when is I was ordered to a defense for torturing or murdering people? Obama needs to honor his pledge. He needs to show some balls and prevent future Presidents from doing what bush and cheney did.
    If he doesn’t, it will happen again. Some other President will commit crimes by ordering others to do so with the advice of cherry picked counsel. Obama is guaranteeing it with his refusal to prosecute bush officials that authorized and participated in torture.
    GOURMET COOKING SECRETS FOR DIABETICS
    A diagnosis of diabetes is a wake-up call that it’s time to make some lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, getting regular exercise and choosing a nutritious, well-balanced diet. But to many of the 24 million diabetics in this country, the mere thought of eliminating sweets and many processed foods from their diet connotes endless meals of flavorless, bland and boring foods. Can diabetics eat healthfully and also make it enjoyable? The answer is a resounding “yes,” says Chris Smith, author of The Diabetic Chef’s Year-Round Cookbook (American Diabetes Association). Smith uses fresh, seasonal ingredients to create healthy, interesting meals full of flavor for diabetics and everyone else at the table, while reducing the salt, sugar and fat that many have come to rely upon to add taste.
    HEALTHY EATING FOR DIABETICS
    Just like the rest of us, people with diabetes should eat nutritious meals that are low in fat (especially saturated and trans fat), moderate in salt and very sparing with sugar, while emphasizing whole grains, vegetables and fruit. However, because diabetics are at a greater risk for life-threatening complications such as hypertension, heart disease and stroke, it’s particularly important that they keep blood glucose control while maintaining normal levels of blood pressure and blood lipids (cholesterol). It can be challenging to do all that while still preparing food that is flavorful and appealing. I asked The Diabetic Chef to share his secrets for preparing foods appropriate for people with diabetes that are delicious enough for everyone to want to eat. Here are some of his best secrets…
    HERBS & SPICES ARE ESSENTIAL
    Liven up your meals with garden-fresh herbs, many of which are available year-round, even in supermarkets. Fresh herbs are densely packed with flavor. You can use herbs in a variety of ways throughout the seasons.
    Fine herbs, such as thyme, oregano, dill, basil and chives, are usually available in the spring and summer. These should be added as a finish (at the end of the cooking process) to release their delicate flavors and aromatic qualities. “Use fresh basil with summer tomatoes and olive oil for pasta, or as a finish to a tomato sauce,” said Smith. “Use chives as a delicate finish to soups, salads and sauces.”
    Hearty herbs (rosemary, sage), available year-round, can be added earlier on in the cooking process. Use them with stews, soups and crockpot dishes. They can withstand the heat of cooking without losing flavor and, in fact, the longer they’re cooked, the more mellow and flavorful they are, says Smith.
    Dried herbs are dehydrated, so must be rehydrated in cooking — for instance, think of homemade tomato sauce. When using dried oregano and basil, the sauce has much more flavor the following day because the flavor of the dried herbs fully blooms and combines with the other ingredients.
    “Herb” typically describes the leaves of a plant, while spices are derived from any other part — including the root, seeds, bark or buds. Spices can be used to create a medley of flavors and can be evocative of different types of ethnic cuisines. “Spices bring great diversity to food,” said Smith.
    OTHER TIPS FOR HEALTHFUL EATING
    Overall, Smith points out that healthful eating is a matter of practicing what he calls “Nutritional MVP,” which stands for moderation… variety… and portion control.
    From his cookbook, another suggestion is to learn how to do template cooking. Template cooking is taking one recipe and adapting it in different ways by using the same cooking method but substituting different ingredients, said Smith. “It gives you the freedom to be creative, which is the essence of good cooking.” It also brings much-needed diversity to meals, so you are not forever serving the same old thing. One example of a template recipe is the Simple Chicken Breast (see below). “There are only seven ingredients in this recipe but you can vary it with fresh, seasonal ingredients,” said Smith. “For instance, in springtime you can exchange the olive oil for sesame oil and use lemon grass rather than garlic to create an Asian flavor. In summer, substitute fresh cilantro for the rosemary.”
    Try different cooking techniques to bring out the essence of foods.
    Grill, broil, roast, sauté or steam food to enhance flavor without added fat or salt. Slow-roast vegetables with a drizzle of olive oil in a 400 degree oven to bring out their true flavors. Many develop a natural sweetness when roasted. Season with garlic or add herbs to vary the taste. Rather than sautéing garlic or onions with butter or oil before adding them to soups or stews, try roasting in the oven.
    Marinate foods in a few ingredients. “The herbs, lemon and spice in the Simple Chicken Breast recipe create a vibrant flavor, and the extra virgin olive oil allows the herbs and spices to reach their full bouquet,” said Smith.
    Sear meat (brown on both sides in a pan for a few minutes before placing it in the oven) to enhance flavor without adding extra fat or salt. “Any kind and cut of meat can be seared,” said Smith.
    Pair dishes with colorful sides. Instead of a plate full of brown items such as chicken and rice, liven up your plate with deeply colored fruits and vegetables that add variety and important phytonutrients (components of fruits and vegetables that are thought to promote health) to your diet. (For more on this topic, see Daily Health News, February 19, 2009.)
    Keep the pantry stocked with these healthy ingredients.
    Oils: extra-virgin olive oil, sesame oil, canola oil and grapeseed oil.
    Vinegars: balsamic, champagne, rice and aged sherry vinegar.
    Essential spices: cayenne pepper, chili powder, cinnamon, mustard, nutmeg, paprika and pepper.
    Essential dry herbs: bay leaves, dill, basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme and sage.
    Other essential products: chicken, vegetable and beef broth, dried beans, whole gluten-free grains such as quinoa and amaranth.
    Essential fresh ingredients: lemons, limes, oranges, garlic, onions, shallots, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, mushrooms, butter (salt free), sour cream (fat free), eggs, hard cheeses (Parmesan and Romano), mustard (grain, Dijon), capers and olives.
    Template Recipe: Simple Chicken Breast
    Serves four.
    Serving Size: 1 Breast Half
    4 chicken breasts
    1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
    1 Tsp dried rosemary
    1 Tsp poultry seasoning
    1 Tsp salt-free lemon pepper
    1 Tbsp minced garlic
    ½ Tsp red pepper flakes
    Cooking spray
    In medium bowl, combine all ingredients and place chicken breasts in it. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour.
    Preheat oven to 375°F.
    Preheat sauté pan to medium-high heat. Spray pan with cooking spray. Add chicken breast to pan and sear to desired color, about 10 seconds, then turn over and sear other side.
    When both sides are seared, remove chicken from pan and place in a baking dish or cookie sheet. Do not cover. Place in oven. Cook meat until it is done, at 165°F internal temperature. When chicken is done, remove from oven and let rest for two to four minutes.
    Robert,
    I don’t think they can prosecute those CIA operatives who acted “lawfully”(I know, it’s surreal..), but I hope they will prosecute those in charge who offered this “umbrella of lawfulness” and gave them the green light.
    Those who spun the laws should be in jail. The guys at the top!
    Republicans on the other hand have the tendency to rally behind a core Republican concept, and logic be damned.
    A few key Republican rallying points:
    >Gore wants “endless recounts” until he wins (even though he really wanted a single fair one).
    >We have to prevent Iraq from using their WMDs (even though they didn’t have any)
    >Iraq was a noble cause because of Hussein (WMDs? who said anything about WMDs?)
    >Tax cuts are always good for the country, even with two wars. (Please ignore that the country it really benefits is China).
    >Iraq was about “taking the fight to them” (please ignore that we said it was about WMDs and that Al Qaeda had no ties to Iraq.)
    >Democrats are sheep and the Republicans actually think about things (That one always makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time.)
    Each of these ideas were widely touted among Republicans. Democrats, for their part, considered these ideas and dismissed them for the illogical rants that they were. Herein lays the power of the Republicans and the weakness of the Democrats. It is a powerful tool for Republicans to forego reason in the name of unity.
    This is why the Republicans are winning the stimulus battle.
    True-but the real problem is that SO MANY FOLKS BUY IT ! They forgot that Bush & Rice were warned in August 2001- in a CIA memo that : ” Bin laden DETERMINED TO HIT INSIDE THE US.’ Bush / Cheney / Rice did nothing about it. also Arab men were taking flying lessons in Fla- but did not want to know how to land. Bush with his cowboy swagger and ‘tough’ talk ( Bring em on ) did not keep us safe ! I’m sure some of the Bush folks will be writing a book- with all the lies and mis-information of the last 8 years.
    The reason people buy this stuff is because the Republicans wrap it up in a shiny wrapper and repeat it with the consistency of a McDonald”s commercial.
    >”Kept us safe”
    That is one Republican rallying point I omitted due to limited space. It is particularly interesting because it takes such convoluted logic to accept. First, it requires defining “safe” as both being on American soil and excluding anthrax. It also ignores the guy who hid a bomb in his shoe but was stopped by passengers and crew. In addition, it forces believers to ignore that there were 8 years between attacks on US soil prior to 9/11. Its a good thing that Republican talking points don”t have to make sense, because otherwise “kept us safe” would make peoples heads explode.
    Clothesline project showcased at UOG
    BY BERNICE SANTIAGO • PACIFIC DAILY NEWS • APRIL 17, 2009
    Dozens of painted and decorated T-shirts, representing women who have survived violence, hang on a clothesline at the University of Guam.
    They are part of the Clothesline Project sponsored by the Violence Against Women Prevention Program at the University of Guam. The shirts are displayed “as testimony to the problem of violence against women,” according to the national project’s Web site.
    Clients from the Healing Hearts Crisis Center and Guma’ Mami decorated the T-shirts two years ago. Messages such as “Stop the Violence,” “Violence is Not an Excuse,” and “Love One Another,” are written on the shirts, said Junelyn Hautea, Education and Training Coordinator of the Violence Against Women Prevention Program.
    “They’re positive messages about what they’ve been through, how they’re recovering,” she said.
    The shirts are located behind the Humanities and Social Sciences building and will be displayed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday.
    Hautea said staff members will be available near the display for visitors who want more information about violence prevention.
    The program will also feature a movie about sexual assault titled “Speak” at 5:30 p.m. on April 30 in UOG’s CLASS Lecture Hall.
    University of Guam received a grant in 2007 to create a Campus Violence Prevention Program. It aims to prevent domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus. It also offers counseling for victims of violence.
    Obama’s Support
    President Obama recently proclaimed April as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. He urged Americans to respond to sexual assault “by creating policies at work and school, by engaging in discussions with family and friends, and by making the prevention of sexual assault a priority in their communities,” according to the April 8th proclamation.
    Aside from the Clothesline Project and Movie Night, Guam is marking the month with a Guam Coalition on Sexual Assault and Family Violence Motorcade and Wave on April 29th, starting at Island Girl Power in Dededo at 4pm.
    What many outside of Texas don’t know is that governor Perry is facing a serious challenge next election from (gasp) another Republican. Perry, who was appointed by Bush when Bush went to Washington is desperate.
    Perry is and always has been Bush’s boy. Senior Senator Kay Bailey Hutcheson has announced her intention to run against Perry for governor and has a serious chance of winning. Perry is doing anything he can to build support from anyone includingthe fringe groups.
    Hutcheson is a serious Republican player and may gain the support of the states rich Republican contributors.
    His turning down of federal money, his speaches about succession are just the opening salvo in the election. Look for even more madness to come.
    I started searching the internet for other right-wing hate speech and anti-government rhetoric to quash! What I found sickened me. Take a look at this rambling I found, apparently written by a bunch of crazed, white, rich old men:
    “Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. BUT WHEN A LONG TRAIN OF ABUSES AND USURPATIONS, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
    I emphasized that last bit, it made me so sick! Someone needs to put these rabble-rousers in a camp somewhere!
    While I believe strongly in freedom of expression, I couldn’t help but stifle a laugh at the in-credulousness of most of those attending their curiously-named “Teabagging Parties” on Wednesday.
    From the looks of the well-heeled, elderly citizens sprawled comfortably in their lawn chairs here in little ole’ Punta Gorda, Flori-dah?, I’d venture to guess that the majority are current beneficiaries of those scary “socialist” programs that everyone loves to hate. Dare I name them? Social Security, Medicare, possibly Medicaid to maintain a frail relative in a nursing home, and other perks that so many of the very comfortable elderly enjoy……at the expense of their younger, working neighbors. So much for the threat of “socialism” coming any time soon.
    Regarding taxes going up. Get a grip, people. The president you fear so much has just signed an income tax cut for 95 percent of you! You’re paying less in federal income taxes now than you did under Ronald Reagan. What you are paying more for are local taxes; but that’s because most states with a bad economy, such as Florida, have had to cut funding to many county programs. (You’ve heard of “trickle-down”. Right?)
    So, if you have a gripe, complain to your state lawmakers, or to your local county commissioners.
    Spontaneous outrage? Hardly. The tea bagging was a well-planned (well, maybe not so well planned), display of political theatre. Nothing else.
