DR. MARK HYMAN’S “ULTRAMIND” STRATEGY FOR BRAIN AND MENTAL HEALTH
Mental illness is on the rise, and conventional medicine cannot cure it. That’s the message from Mark Hyman, MD, who offers an alternative answer in his new book, The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First. He notes that an epidemic of “broken brains” affects millions of people worldwide, taking many forms — anxiety, depression, dementia, addictions, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, etc. The common model for addressing these disorders is drug therapy… but drugs alone fail to address the underlying causes of mental disease.
THE SHORTCOMINGS OF DRUG THERAPY
The real cure for brain disorders lies outside the brain, Dr. Hyman explains. If you suffer from depression, for example, you are not suffering from a “Prozac deficiency” in spite of the fact that doctors may prescribe it or other antidepressants. Mainstream medicine’s approach is to make a diagnosis based on symptoms, then suppress those symptoms with a medication rather than identifying the cause and fixing that. For example, many cases of depression are actually rooted in nutritional deficiencies or imbalances, including vitamin D, B-12, an omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, or a problem with digestive function or some other biological deficit. And, just about all these can be corrected without antidepressants. In fact, Dr. Hyman points out that most people who take antidepressants find that they offer only partial relief, lose effectiveness over time or simply don’t work. These drugs also cause side effects such as weight gain and loss of sex drive, and more than half of people who take them quit within months.
In reality, everything that affects the body affects the brain, since it is one of the most vital organs of the body, and everything that affects the brain affects the rest of the body. Simply taking an antidepressant for depression — or Ritalin for ADHD, or an anti-anxiety medication and so forth — fails to take this basic body-mind connection into account. In Dr. Hyman’s opinion, a new paradigm for mental illness must take a wider view of a person, not merely focus on the brain, since there are myriad causes of mental illness. This view should replace the shortsighted approach to treatment where a doctor marks down a diagnostic code on a patient’s chart and prescribes the corresponding pill.
DR. HYMAN’S ULTRAMIND SOLUTION
According to Dr. Hyman, there are seven key influences affecting your brain, your memory, attention, mood and behavior — nutrition, hormones, inflammation, digestion, detoxification, energy metabolism and the mind-body connection. When one or more of these are thrown off-kilter, imbalances develop, which can manifest in mental and/or emotional illness. Identifying and addressing imbalances thusly enables the body’s natural healing mechanisms to take over, bringing about dramatic improvements in mood, memory, attention, concentration, cognition and other brain functions.
Dr. Hyman recommends a three-pronged strategy for brain wellness: His book has quizzes to help identify which of your seven underlying systems isn’t working… suggestions on how to fix the underlying problem causing the imbalance… and ways to nourish all these aspects so they can function optimally as an integrated system. We took a brief look at how each of the seven key systems affects mental health, and what you can do to help keep them in balance.
• Are you eating right? Inadequate nutrition is at the root of many illnesses, both mental and physical. If your diet is loaded with fatty fast foods, processed foods and refined carbohydrates (e.g., white bread and pasta) you’re not only missing the nutrients your brain requires to function properly, but also creating other chemical imbalances. To restore balance, eat a diet based on a variety of whole, unprocessed foods.
• Is there a hormonal issue? Improper diet is among the factors that can lead to a hormone imbalance — specifically, eating sugar and refined carbohydrates causes the body to pump out an overload of the hormone insulin into the bloodstream. Too much insulin can cause mood swings and behavior disturbances such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia. Other hormonal imbalances are caused by swings in sex hormones, which can be a natural result of aging, or an improperly functioning thyroid gland, etc. See your physician to identify and treat hormonal issues.
• Do you need to cool down inflammation? If the body is inflamed, the brain is too. Brain inflammation is implicated in nearly every brain disease, from Alzheimer’s to autism to depression to schizophrenia. Sources of inflammation include refined carbohydrates, food allergens, stress and anxiety — but on the bright side, Dr. Hyman reminds us that these are all fixable problems. In addition to eating healthier whole foods, getting plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, and taking steps to control stress, you can also add anti-inflammatory herbs such as turmeric, ginger and rosemary to your diet.
• Is there a digestive problem? One of the most powerful ways you can fix your brain is to fix your gut, says Dr. Hyman. For example, if your digestive enzymes malfunction, undigested gluten from wheat or casein from milk can harm brain function. Strategies to resolve digestive problems might include eliminating food allergens, considering digestive enzymes and taking probiotics to bring digestive colonies of microbes back into proper balance.
• Do you need to detox? Toxic chemicals in the environment such as mercury and lead underlie many neurological diseases. Limit exposure to these toxins to the greatest degree possible. For example, do not eat (or rarely eat) large fish such as swordfish or tuna that is likely to contain higher levels of mercury. If you live in an older house, be sure the water and paint are not contaminated with lead.
• How’s your energy metabolism? Mitochondria are the miniature energy factories in your body’s cells, including those in the brain. The single most important thing you can do to support your mitochondria and boost your energy is to exercise. For energy problems specifically related to stress, toxicity or aging, Dr. Hyman prescribes supplements such as Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Alpha-lipoic acid, Coenzyme Q10, magnesium, riboflavin and niacin.
• Are you stressed out? Closely examine your life, Dr. Hyman urges. Stress robs you of energy, so take action to more effectively manage it. For instance, make a promise to yourself that this week you will eliminate one thing that causes anxiety and add one that helps you heal and thrive.
Drugs can provide a temporary fix for brain problems, says Dr. Hyman, but these are not the long-term solution. As usual, it takes more work than popping a pill, but in the long run a healthy mind and body are worth it.

I found this quote. “In testimony that could bolster Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s claim that the CIA misled her during briefings on detainee interrogations, former Senator Bob Graham insisted on Thursday that he too was kept in the dark about the use of waterboarding, and called the agency’s records on these briefings “suspect.”"
May 19th, 2009 at 10:24 am
To those who think waterboarding is not torture, I ask why the US supported war crimes trials after WWII that prosecuted those who waterboared? If it was a capital offense then, why not now?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:25 am
I beleive Graham and Pelosi. The CIA under Bush had no choice but to go along with this nonsense just like the military had no choice but to participate in a illegal, unprovoked invasion and occupation.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:25 am
I wouldn’t be surprised if the CIA misled congress, after all, they did work for the Bush Administration.
Bush mantra: “never admit to anything, ever.”
May 19th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Why can’t Congress understand that the administration that manipulated and lied to everybody about everything manipulated and lied to them too? Cheney and Co. faked everything from the NSA reports to the “Intelligence” gathering to the briefings they gave to Congress, to the reports they gave and “leaked” to the press.
The saddest joke is that none of this is new. Executive branch falsification and disinformation has been recurrent policy since the Nixon era, as we learned through the Church Commission, and again after Iran-Contra (in which, surprise, both Cheney and Rummie were involved).

What a shame the dems are still blaming bush for everything now its his fault that people like pelosi have been caught lieing to the american people and whats worse is there are those who say that is OK rather hypicritical one side lies that is bad the other side lies that is ok what world do you live in ? the dems are so outraged because even if you want to call it torture which it wasnt the dems were on board then but now they arent you cant have it both ways and it will cost them in 2010 just think 3 murdering terrorists ,that you feel sorry for them but 3000 dead men women children your fellow americans are forgotten about i think youve chosen the wrong side to be on
May 19th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Pelosi is telling the truth Bush and Cheney lied to the American People what makes you think they did not lie to Pelosi. All the Bush cabinet should do jail time.I cannot understand how repubs always try and divert attention from their dirty deeds. This pelosi smokescreen will not work, let us get the real crooks. As far as Cheney and the safety of the country remember the world liked us so much that someone threw a shoe at OUR president bush.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Where is the evidence that Nancy Pelosie lied? We have lots of evidence of the lies the Bush administration told to justify a war of aggression. Than of course there are the lies of omission, lots of that too. If they didn’t tell her about water boarding because she did not know enough to ask the question it is still a lie. Without real concrete evidence to the contrary I will believe Nancy. The Republicans can’t be trusted after all the lies.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Are you seriously trying to blame the actions of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfield on Pelosi. Once again rethuglicans are unwilling to accept responsibility for their actions. Blame someone else.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:45 am
Of course your government agencies give out false information. Where I’m from that is called lying. Another piece of false information given out by the CIA was that there were commercial planes on 911. There were no commercial planes on 911. It was all a lie….sorry it was all false information. Its happened before it will happen again.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:46 am
Everyone is lying including me.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Though Bob Graham’s documentation of his contacts with the CIA supports Speaker Pelosi in her claims, it does not matter. It also doesn’t matter whether “valuable” information was obtained from tortued prisoners. It does matter that tortue is both illegal and immoral. Blaming the Speaker is just the latest in a string of red herrings. The same moral and religous hypocrites who fear mongered us into an unjust poorly planned war are using fear and hate to defend tortue. This time, will we as a people have the courage to defend our founding values and principles or cave again to fear. If the latter, the Islamic extremists have won.

I don’t get why Liz Cheney is a reliable spokesperson for her Dad when it comes to his ‘job’ … my daughter (who is 35) couldn’t answer questions about her Dad’s job, so why does anyone think what Liz Cheney has to say is to be taken as fact??
Did her Dad discuss EVERYTHING with her? If so, he must have shared classified info, right? Fact is, all she ‘knows’ is what she ‘thinks’ she knows … being his daughter carries no weight in this case .. she is just a little girl sticking up for Daddy, believing what he says..
May 19th, 2009 at 10:51 am
It takes a special kind of spineless coward to send their daughter out to defend their crimes. What a “man” this Cheney is. No wonder he never served his country despite all his tough, pro-war, pro-torture
May 19th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Really Liz? You think your father kept us safe? Go ask the survivors of the victims of 9-11, and think about this, HE TURNED A BLIND EYE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. Go ask the survivors of the victims of the Anthrax that was sent, HE WAS PART OF THE CONSPIRACY TO RELEASE IT TO POINT A FINGER DIRECTLY AT IRAQ AND SADDAM. Go ask the survivors of our military war dead, HE LIED AT EVERY TURN TO TAKE US TO A PRE-EMPTIVE ILLEGAL WAR FOR WAR PROFITEERING. Go ask the friends and relatives of those who have returned from that war brutally injured and forced to live out the rest of their lives in misery, HE LIED AT EVERY TURN TO TAKE US TO A PRE-EMPTIVE ILLEGAL WAR FOR WAR PROFITEERING. You’re father kept us safe? GO TO HELL.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:52 am
As a veteran, I always question that if these clowns are so for “protecting America”, why did they AVOID military service during the Vietnam draft? They cared so much about “protecting America”, they did everything possible to avoid actually serving and protecting America.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Powell’s former Aide, Colonel Wilkerson, put Liz Cheney in her place on The Rachel Maddow show yesterday (Monday) when he said Liz Cheney’s bona fides to address this subject are the same bona fides that she had for the position she held in the Bush administration, which is nothing more than the fact that she is Dick Cheney’s daughter.
I personally can’t begrudge Liz Cheney for defending her father, but we can and should begrudge the mainstream corporate media for treating her as though what she says on this subject has any credibility.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Typical clueless right-winger falling for the Republican tactic of trying to make this about Pelosi…
Congratulations on being so easy to distract and dupe.
What could Pelosi have done to stop a classified torture program when she was only the Minority Leader at the time? She didn’t control the Presidency, or even control a branch of Congress.
Also, there is no “proof” she lied about anything. In fact, Bob Graham, the other ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee says she is being truthful, and that they were not told torture was already approved and on-going.
By the way, where were people like John McCain in all of this? Unlike Pelosi, he could have influenced his fellow Repbulicans who controlled Congress and the White House. He chose not to, just like every other Republican. Yet now we’re supposed to believe Nancy Pelosi was the one to blame for this program authorized and ordered by the Bush administration and the Republican Party?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Pelosi!? This isn’t about Pelosi. Stop with the red herrings.
It’s about anyone who is does not believe the Cheney propaganda must be un-American.
May 19th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Says says a lot today. And I am not lying (at this particular moment). And Says says what he/she says with a passion only a person who has deep beliefs in what they say.
I agree with most everything Says says. Says, says it like it is, and I for one admire say’s conviction and would like to see a few who are quilty convicted and sentenced harshly, I am not talking about any witch hunt either.
This past administration has a LOT to answer for. I would like to see justice done for once.
Oh, and Connie sorry if I made you blush, you owe me one.
Al
May 19th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Hi Mischa, good one…so cleverly done…
As Al says of Says, he just says it all…it’s not about Pelosi…this witch hunt reminds me of when I was trying to teach Elke the puppy how to ‘fetch the ball’ she spent weeks staring at my hand instead of watching where the ball was going. She turned 11 the other day : ) and she still chases her tail, but she knows now to keep her eye on the ball. Let’s all keep our eye on the ball and not get distracted with red herrings…
Al, thanks for asking after me, the same day Elke turned 11 would’ve been that annual marital day of celebration for me, wasn’t feeling so ‘Zen’ about that non-celebration and it’s accompanying mood so I chose to keep my silence and rearrange my attitude off-line. Much better today. Btw, I think your interaction with Ms Connie is sweet so far : ) making her blush and all that, I love it.
Caio for now, and I’m using the term loosely today-Zen Lill
PS released ‘Women around the world’ today, must say that researching that one, and I didn’t even include much It’s of the info did not elevate my mood du jour yesterday. It is one depressing subject and I give my disclaimer.
May 19th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Thanks Zen Lill. Someone has to tell the story. I can think of no one better qualified.

Sip This for Superhealthy Teeth
Can’t get to your toothbrush? Try sipping a cup of green tea instead.
Research shows that drinking green tea may be a good way to impress your dentist. In a study, the more green tea men drank, the better their gums fared during dental exams.
Green for Great Gums
You know that part of the dental exam when your dentist pokes and prods your gums to see how healthy they are? The study showed not only did frequent green tea drinkers have better results during the exam, but also their gums bled less. Here’s a bonus reason to drink green tea: better tooth enamel.
Polish Your Pearlies
Researchers think it’s the catechins in green tea that somehow prevent cavity-producing plaque from forming, which in turn protects teeth and gums. Catechins may also help reduce gum inflammation. Find out about the link between gum inflammation and heart disease.
Here are three other tasty treats that can help keep your teeth pretty-as-a-picture perfect:
• Chew gum. Just be sure to choose this type.
• Eat dates. Find out how nature’s sweet treat is sweet for teeth, too.
• Munch fruit and veggies. Save money on teeth-whitening products by eating these stain-fighting foods.
RealAge Benefit: Seeing a dental professional every 6 months to have your gums checked and cared for, or more often if advised, can make your RealAge as much as 6.4 years younger.

You Chamorros who voted for Guam while you were in the mainland did good by Guam because President Obama has been good to Guam.

Obama has been good for Guam
BY RAY TENORIO • MAY 2, 2009
President Obama’s greatest achievement in his first 100 days was no small feat. He managed to bring a divided country together and give Americans hope. Whether you agree with his policies or not, we have a president who can sit down with Democrats and Republicans to move our nation and beautiful island forward. President Obama is proving that a bipartisan accord is more effective than partisan politics, which limits us.Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of some of the president’s policies. Some programs in the stimulus package may end up burdening Guam taxpayers when federal funding ends. I don’t agree with cutting bonus pay to our troops. I have always been resistant to more taxes on our people. Regardless of these concerns, I do like how much attention and support the President and his administration have paid to Guam in these first 100 days.
Guam’s future has been tied so closely to federal assistance. Gov. Felix Camacho for six years built relationships with the Bush administration to get that support. The true test is whether the transition has been smooth into the Obama years.
By all accounts, in the first 100 days it has. President Obama doesn’t care which political party is in charge; his administration is taking care of Guam. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton allayed our concerns and formalized the Guam buildup with Japan. President Obama included Guam in his stimulus package, thanks in large part to the bipartisan efforts of Camacho and Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo. In his first 100 days, he already has committed to signing Bordallo’s war claims bill if the Senate passes it.
President Obama’s bipartisan initiatives in his first 100 days have set the stage for an administration that tolerates everything but intolerance. We must share this attitude. By cooperating with local public and private leaders, along with working with the Obama administration, our island can get the federal support we need.
Fortunately, our Legislative leaders demonstrated their commitment to a unified “Team Guam” approach when they visited the nation’s capitol in March. Speaker Judith Won Pat, Sen. Eddie Calvo, Vice Speaker Benjamin Cruz and Majority Leader Sen. Rory Respicio went to Washington, D.C., and talked to leaders on both sides of the political aisle. The issues ranged from war reparations and consent decrees to the military buildup and a host of other matters concerning both Republicans and Democrats. These are Guam issues, which matter to our entire island.
We can have a very fruitful relationship with the Obama administration if we can continue casting aside our political labels and differences. Together, we can help secure a new direction for Guam.
Ray Tenorio is a Republican senator in the 30th Guam Legislature.

Peter,
I am with you on most of your comments. But on this one I agree and disagree. Yes, I believe the most popular politician on the planet is very good for Guam. But I think that President Obama can help Guam better by forcing us to do more for ourselves.

Obama can help Guam walk on its own
BY FELIX AGUON • MAY 2, 2009
I don’t know about all of you, but a few months ago it seemed like the whole country expressed rather strongly that what they wanted was change. You know what? I think we are all going to get what we wanted.I think that Obama is a man who really hasn’t decided all of what he intends to do as president and I want to call on him, as an island boy himself, to assist the islands in the Marianas to become, if possible, more assertive and more apt to do things for ourselves.
We are an indigenous people. Unlike the native Americans in the states, we have not made our own decisions in quite some time. We still are not strong enough to make decisions for ourselves.
Our president is being chastised for things that he has done in his first 100 days and some have been saying that what he is doing is treason. I would like to think that he is acting on behalf of the country and doing what he thinks is best.
Of course, time will tell if his agenda will be successful. He obviously has the guts to do what he must do as president and I wonder if the people of the U.S. really know who they elected.
I want for the president to visit us out here in the Marianas and see what a mess all of this has become. We really have not been able to do the best with what we have had because we were never really in charge.
How can we ever be the people we all really want to become in the world when our big brother can swoop in any time and take whatever we have away from us at the slightest whim? We still need to be able to slip and fall every now and then, but given time we should be able to walk on our own and do things for ourselves.
There are not a lot of people like Barack Obama, and there are not a lot of people in the world like Chamorros.
Felix Aguon is a resident of Dededo.
