Article Topicless

Posted by Michelle Moquin on May 16th, 2009

It’s Saturday morning…I slept in late, and my mind is still foggy from hours deep in my own film noir. And yes, I did wake up dreaming. :)

Coffee is needed and coffee is what I’m going to get. Writing?….hmm…I think this is all you’re going to get from me this morning: Article Topicless.

However, the God topic is interesting….I’m sure there is more out there to be said by all of you. Me? I’ll pass and go sip on my coffee in the glorious sunshine in my backyard.

Peace  out….

Gratefully your blog host,

    BRAIN BOOSTER FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN

Researchers continue to look to the Mediterranean region, particularly Greece and Italy, for secrets to heart-healthy eating, since heart disease mortality is so much lower there. Their latest exciting discovery relates to a nutrient called choline, abundant in the Mediterranean diet, especially in fish and eggs. The health benefits of choline and one of its most important metabolites, betaine (which can also be obtained from food sources), are just beginning to be understood, but they range from keeping the liver healthy to boosting brainpower and more. With its assorted virtues, choline is worth learning more about.
    RECENT RESEARCH
As part of a large Greek study called ATTICA, researchers used food questionnaires to investigate dietary habits of 1,514 men and 1,528 women with no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD)… they then collected blood samples from the participants which they used to assess inflammatory biomarkers that indicate higher risk for CVD and other disorders. The biomarkers were C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), homocysteine and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a). Findings: People who ate high amounts of choline and betaine compared with those who ate the lesser amounts had lower concentrations of all four measures.
Although scientists have long been aware of choline, it wasn’t until 1998 that it acquired official status as a required nutrient, when the National Academy of Sciences established a Dietary Reference Intake for it, a move that led scientists to undertake more in-depth research. I spoke with Steven H. Zeisel, MD, PhD, who is the director of the Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina and a leading expert on choline. He told me that research to date shows that choline exists in every cell and that it helps the body control inflammation. It also protects the liver from fat buildup caused by several problems, including excess alcohol and/or insufficient food intake and contributes to the health and flexibility of cell membranes, including in the brain, thereby allowing nutrients to enter and exit.
    CHOLINE AND YOUR BRAIN
Choline is a particularly important brain nutrient, especially for fetal development. Current research shows that maternal choline prompts more rapid division in fetal stem cells in parts of the brain associated with memory, resulting in a greater number of these brain cells — and animal studies show that offspring of mothers fed a high choline diet perform better on memory testing for their entire lifetime. Dr. Zeisel says that scientists believe consumption breeds cellular development not only during fetal development but also throughout the lifespan. Though it has not yet been studied, it is possible that choline given later in life could increase the proliferation of these cells.
    CHOLINE AND BETAINE FOOD SOURCES
Both choline and betaine are relatively easy to incorporate into a healthy and balanced diet. Dietary choline is largely found in animal products — eggs, meat and dairy — as well as fish and potatoes. Betaine is mostly in plant foods, notably beets, spinach and whole wheat. You can find a complete listing of choline-containing foods and their associated betaine metabolite content at this site: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/?Choline/Choline.pdf. Though there are many forms of choline metabolites, it’s the “total choline” column that has the information you need. Lecithin, often added as an emulsifier to foods, contains choline (about 15% by weight).
Dr. Zeisel says that one-half to one gram (500 mg to 1,000 mg) per day of choline is sufficient. For comparison, with food sources, one large egg has 113 mg choline, 100 g of beef contains about 100 mg of choline and one cup of whole milk has 35 mg choline. In our country it now appears the general population is getting less than optimal levels of choline, with average intake of about one-quarter to one-third of a gram per day. Choline is available in supplements, but Dr. Zeisel warns that very high doses have been linked with vomiting, sweating, low blood pressure and unusual body odor. Betaine supplements are also available and have been used to address high homocysteine levels. Betaine is best taken as betaine-hydrochloride, a supplement that also bolsters stomach acid production with meals (though it is not appropriate for all patients). Speak to a trained professional before taking choline or betaine supplements. Stay tuned… we can expect to see much more research concerning this intriguing area of nutrient research.

  5. HOWIE Says:

Hello Viv, This is Howie. If my memory is correct, we actually spoke many months ago. You gave me a timeframe for being brought aboard the Climax. That never panned out because shit happens, even to the TAO.

Unfortunately I was born on this Planet/Terrarium that keeps us separated from all other beings by simple distance. It is obvious that this Cattle Planet is an experiment of some kind. The question is who?

I know the TAO are so far advanced from us that we seem more like bacteria than sentient beings to your kind. However, as I have stated before, there are beings in this vast Universe who are more advanced than your kind as we are to you.

I know this touches your egos because whenever a Human such as Doug, (who I have no alliance with) reminds you of this fact, you reflexively threaten with violence and our being eaten.

Your response to Doug which I have quoted below is evidence of what I have just written and proof that whatever you are, you are not infallible, and your egos bruise too easily by mere talk from an inferior being such as Doug.

“Carr is not an issue with us because like the events that naturally occur in the universe, it is something that we can not predict nor avoid. We have to react to them the best way we can. Deep space travel is always unpredictable. That is its allure for me.
Your attempt at enlightening me is probably fulfilling for you in some human way. For me it is just the food making noises.” — Viv.

There is no reason to threaten, as is a primary rule on this blog. I am not allowed to do so either.

All beings were Created by a Superior Being. We refer to him as Carr on this blog. They perform their duties just as they are expected to by their Creator and really do not know if it is their original idea or something instilled in them by a Creator who is even capable of changing the rules of the Universe as he wishes. He can do what is considered impossible to any life form because there is nothing he cannot do.

I realize my position as a puny Human and accept it. The TAO must learn that although perhaps millions of years more advanced than earthlings, they still must abide by the same rules and limitations which they are susceptible to.

If we were given the chance and the time, perhaps we would evolve into beings beyond our imaginations, however I personally believe that this Planet is like a sinking ship. Its days are numbered and so are Humankind’s.

I just wanted to put things into the proper perspective. My ego doesn’t gain from this commentl. It is just a comment ot you, Viv. Chill out.

    HOWIE

  6. Al Says:

    TAO:
Have you heard of a planet named NMERO, It is about 4.5 times the size of earth, has a titanium core, a 23 degree tilt, has no magnetic field, everything is solar and battery powered, it even has 2 suns. Your ship was reported to travel at about 1.5 times the speed of light, that’s fast for me, but CARR felt like he was riding on a school bus. Did you know that you had a passenger riding along?

    Al

  7. Doug Says:

Al and Howie…nice to have you along. I do hope you are both well.

  8. TAO Says:

Al, while i acknowledge that what you say has occurred. I do not see it as the work of a god. I see it as a science that my place on the evolutionary scale is not aware of. I can alter the natural events on your planet for my hovercraft. Observe your mid west tomorrow. It does not mean that I am a god.

My ship simply has the ability to produce the formula that will cause the event to occur and your scientists will justify it as a natural occurrence. We have the math and the equipment to utilize the math.

Swetneo may appear as an unexplainable phenomenon. But I believe it is an event soundly rooted in a science that we as a civilization have yet to discover.

    Viv

  9. TAO Says:

Al, I noticed that Michelle took it down too.

    Viv

  10. TAO Says:

    Howie,

You are mistaken. I did not threaten doug. I just reminded him that he speaks so boldly because he knows he has the protection of one who may one day command a Prathiss. An insignificant Prathiss is about 43/4 times the size of your planet.

Commanders have destroyed worlds and taken the entire planets inhabitants aboard to be bartered in some distant galaxy. The practice was out lawed less than two million years ago by the federation. It may be revised by the emperor.

There is no ego involved. If you earthlings were consequential, perhaps my ego would be bruised by your gall. But you aren’t. Your science is so primitive that we treat it as your scientist treat the science of alchemy.

Primitive beings are so paranoid. Reminding you that you are part of my food chain is not a threat is is a fact. Your reading “I will eat you,” when I said that your are what I eat” is amusing.

Beings that are far superior technologically to another. would not waste their time threatening that species. We would just do whatever we wanted to to them. You are food, I do not threaten my food I just eat it.

The fact that i am forced to hold discourse with you should imply to you that your are not available to me as food.

  16. Health Info Says:

ACETAMINOPHEN + CAFFEINE CAN CAUSE LIVER DAMAGE

The word has been out for some time that higher-than-recommended-doses of acetaminophen (eg, Tylenol) can lead to liver damage, and that combining it with excess alcohol can make matters even worse. Now it emerges that combining large amounts of caffeine with acetaminophen can likewise prove dangerous. People can obtain high doses from not only the caffeine in strong coffee and energy drinks, but also by taking too many medications that combine caffeine with acetaminophen, such as certain Midol products or Excedrin brand drugs. These drugs often pack as much or more caffeine than a strong cup of coffee.
CAFFEINE BOOSTS PRODUCTION OF TOXIC BYPRODUCTS
At the University of Washington in Seattle, medicinal chemist Sidney D. Nelson, PhD, and his colleagues tested the effects of large amounts of acetaminophen and caffeine (approximately 20 8-ounce cups). They found that the combination produced triple the amount of a toxic byproduct that the body normally creates when breaking down acetaminophen. This same toxin is responsible for liver damage or failure from chronically combining acetaminophen with drinking alcohol (Tylenol’s label, for example, warns consumers of three or more drinks daily). Important to note: What’s acceptable for one person can be excessive for another, due to differing physiological responses.
Earlier research in lab animals had similarly demonstrated that high doses of caffeine increased the severity of acetaminophen-related liver damage. Because studies have taken place only in the lab and not in people (which is tricky to do for ethical reasons), the exact toxic threshold has not been established. Average doses of caffeine ingested either in caffeinated drinks (such as coffee) or in medications, such as many over-the-counter products, ranges from 200 to 300 mg depending on what the product is, its strength and how much is ingested. The average amount of caffeine in a normal 8-ounce cup of coffee is about 100 mg — and there’s more in a “stronger” cup, an espresso-type drink or 12 ounces instead of 8.
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY: MODERATE CAFFEINE INTAKE
Dr. Nelson points out that moderate doses of caffeine actually enhance the pain-relieving effects of acetaminophen, and the two are commonly used together in combination drugs (such as Midol Menstrual Complete, Midol PMS and Midol Teen or Excedrin Extra Strength, Excedrin QuickTabs, Excedrin Migraine, Excedrin Sinus Headache and Excedrin Tension Headache). These products are generally safe and effective when taken infrequently and as directed. Correspondingly, drinking a few cups of coffee or consuming a similar amount of caffeine from other sources is not known to increase the risk of liver damage from acetaminophen.
However, one should limit caffeine intake when taking drugs for headache or migraine pain. A maximum would be four grams of acetaminophen in a 24-hour period in divided doses not to exceed one gram every six hours, says Dr. Nelson. It would be safer to take no more than 500 to 650 mg every six hours, as that relieves symptoms for most people.
Problems arise with excessive intake. Dr. Nelson says that in general, people should look for acetaminophen as an ingredient in many cold, flu and other medications, and avoid taking acetaminophen in addition to those products. In Dr. Nelson’s study, it was very high concentrations of caffeine (the equivalent of about 20 cups of coffee) that tripled the amount of the toxic liver metabolite of acetaminophen. So the good news is that you don’t have to sacrifice your coffee or cola or refrain from taking acetaminophen… but if you take them together, monitor your intake. This is especially important if you also drink large amounts of alcohol.

Guam base bids farewell to mechanic after 61 years on job

By Tim Wightman, Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Sunday, May 17, 2009

Jesse Leon Guerrero/Courtesy of the U.S. Navy
Capt. Jay Lewis, right, executive officer of U.S. Naval Base Guam, presents a letter of appreciation to Antonio Juanico for 61 years of service to the Navy at Juanico’s retirement party May 8.
First things first: Antonio Juanico plans to rest a while.

But after 61 years as a mechanic on Naval Base Guam, his thoughts won’t be far from the cranes and trucks and other heavy equipment that occupied his days.

“I loved the work. I love all my co-workers,” Juanico said in a phone interview Wednesday. “That’s why I liked to continue my service to the Navy.”

The 81-year-old native of the Philippines called it quits May 8 in a ceremony held at the base’s transportation building in front of those friends and co-workers.

“[Mr. Juanico’s] motivation, willingness to assist and mentor others and outstanding leadership have served our organization, the U.S. Navy and our country well,” Juanico’s project director Wayne Cornell said at the ceremony, according to a news release.

Juanico’s journey started in 1948 in the Philippines when he heard recruiters were in the area looking for people to work as laborers to rebuild Guam after the island was devastated during World War II.

“So, I heard about it. I just come down there. And in my mind, I’d like to go to Guam,” Juanico said.

He worked as a laborer for the U.S. naval government contractor MAS-DELCO until 1952, when it closed operations.

Juanico then caught on as a mechanic for the Public Works Center with Naval Air Station and Naval Main Base Guam for the next 30 years.

After retiring from that, he continued performing various services to the Navy and then, in 2000, accepted a position as a heavy equipment mechanic with contractor DZSP 21, which provides a wide range of services for the base.

Throughout the years, Juanico has adapted to technological changes with the vehicles and heavy equipment that came his way, saying, “It was very much a challenge.”

Felix Achaigua, Juanico’s co-worker and friend since 1968, said Juanico was always eager to help out and always excited about his job.

“If he had it his way, he’d still be working,” Achaigua said.

“He likes his job, and it’s very hard for him to miss work, but that’s 61 years, man. We hope to see him here, but it’s time for him to take it easy.”

While Juanico looks forward to spending his retirement with his wife of almost 50 years, their two children and 12 grandchildren, he doesn’t plan on being a stranger at the base.

“My mind is over there at the base,” he said.

“Nice people. I miss all of them.”

I am a catholic. I am white. My family are big donors to Notre Dame. My family has been devoutly catholic for generations. They are against Obama speaking at Notre Dame.

They were not against a host of white racists, separatists, capital punishment advocates, and war mongers of every stripe who performed before Obama. Where was my church when we whites were the priests and catholic church when this country needed them to stand up for those non whites that were being discriminated against, assaulted, illegally incarcerated, and murdered? Where was the church when whites passed laws against interracial marriage?

The Catholic church has be absent on so many important issues concerning things that mattered to non whites as to have lost any legitimate claim to anything buy a white man excuse to manipulate American opinion.

I am speaking up because it is so disgusting that these people are organizing against a black man speaking at Notre Dame when they have supported so many white men who worked to keep blacks from ever achieving equality.

I have to say that I do not understand, for the life of me, why anyone thinks this is the time to release more torture photos. President Obama is getting ready to give a speech from Egypt to the Muslim world next month, seniors all over the country are going on their senior trips abroad, violence has increased in Iraq, and Pakistan is in turmoil. And we want to release more torture photos? What? Could we pick a worse time to do this?

If he does not release the pix, it will seem to the Muslim world that he is covering for Bush’s war crimes, and is not much more than Bush #3. Obama is walking into a minefield on this trip, and he knows it- he almost has to release the photos, if not to the public, at least to the leaders of the Muslim world.

I’m catholic too, My brother was molested by one of those butt rustlers. It is amazing to me the shit people will accept for this myth the aliens cast into our mists.

Why is anyone still looking at those priest to help them get closer to god? What does the church have to do for their followers to get a clue.

    The Church is a fraud.

Isn’t Cheney’s new stance largely a well-aimed bid for our attention? In the past, we’ve seen Dick and his scary friends prance in and out of the looking glass, sculpting facts and figures to justify some pretty startling misdeeds.

If you can listen to military experts condemn torture as ineffective (other than for recruiting terrorists) and still harbor beliefs that Cheney has kept us safe, well….maybe you’ll be interested in this new bridge he’s selling. The fact that this comes in the first months of a new presidency just makes it bigger news.

Cheney framing the issue in terms of security just doesn’t hold water, in my opinion. We were told over and over to be afraid of “what message we were sending to the enemy” and to unite behind the administration. Of course, back then his message came from some bunker in the basement. Now that we have a new president, he’s kind of chatty…..there’s a brand new Dick in the mirror!

The only thing that matters to cheney is the fact that he could do jail time. He is making every attempt at covering his ass.

They’re acting as if by not showing the photos the torture never happened. In reality you have a choice between showing the photos in an attempt to regain some trust and respect for the USA from the rest of the world, or not showing the photos and telling the world nothing changed except a more articulate figurehead, still protecting Bush’s immoral acts.

We’re on an even slower timetable than Bush’s to withdraw from Iraq, increasing troop levels into Afghanistan and supporting Cheney’s suspension of Habeus Corpus for “enemy combatants” (the neat trick is we don’t have to prove they are the enemy, we can just abduct them, wouldn’t want the world thinking the US believes in the rule of law).

When Obama was running I kept telling people on the fence “if nothing else he will re-set the opinion of the rest of the world about us, they’ll be waiting for a sign that we’re not still Bush/Cheney”. Now they have their answer – nothing has changed except lip service to say torture is wrong, just not wrong enough to prosecute anyone or expose the horrors to the light of day.

Given most Americans are still in denial about the real reasons anti-American terrorism exists, I guess Obama’s charm will convince America this is OK, but you can bet in the Madrasas it’s a different story.
