Natural Treatment for Prostate Enlargement: Hope or Hype?
Kevin T. McVary, MD
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
Besides saw palmetto, which has been proven ineffective, there is an array of natural supplements that are reputed to relieve symptoms of benign prostate enlargement (BPH). While none of these supplements is believed to be unsafe, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re all effective. A quick report card on the most popular natural BPH treatments…
PROMISING
Lycopene. There’s evidence that this antioxidant compound — found in red tomatoes and in processed tomato products, such as tomato sauce, tomato paste and ketchup — may lower the risk for prostate cancer. It’s currently an area of active investigation as a potential treatment for BPH as well.
Omega-3 fatty acids (taken in food, such as fish or avocados, or in flaxseed or fish oil supplements) have a beneficial impact on the vascular system, which is good for general health — including the health of the prostate gland. Their vascular effects may improve erection quality (which can be impaired by some BPH medications) and may also hold benefits for certain urinary disorders.
Pygeum africanum. This bark extract is a promising medication based on preliminary data from human and laboratory studies, but at this point, no specific mechanism of action has been identified and no proven impact on BPH has been demonstrated. Further investigation is needed.
NOT PROMISING
Rye grass pollen extract. No sound studies have found convincing evidence of its effectiveness.
Stinging nettle. No sound studies have found convincing evidence of its effectiveness.
Zinc (taken in food, such as pumpkin seeds, or in supplement form). Studies have found that zinc has no impact on BPH.

Hi Michelle, I have read about people having difficulty getting on your blog and never believed these people were unabvle to get in. I thought this was a false statement which was p]ut there to givethe blog a myzsterious feel until today. I tried to get in and blog you, but could not get in 6 times. I thought these people were full of shit. Now I see that it can happen to anyone. I have always been able to get my comment in without without a problem. Now I believe that sometimes people really cannot reach the blog at times.
I thought it was a mystery added to give the blog a supernatural personality, However I learned it is true and I am not too egotiistical to admit it.

Chamorros politics is as nasty as ever on Guam. The Calvos tried some possible shaky business against the tell-it-like-it-is “Guamneswfactor, but they were busted. As if they don’t own enough media outlets on Guam, they added a s to guamnewsfactor.com to come up with guamnewsfactors.com. Then produced a page exactly like the real guamnewsfactor.com.

Imposter: Guam News Factor Copy Cat Site Preparing To Launch
Top Stories

By John Dela Rosa
Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations…
While imitation is the highest form of flattery, the development of a new website intended to look identical to GuamNewsFactor.com is clearly meant to mislead the people of Guam. Guam News Factor clearly has made some in our community uncomfortable with the coverage we have lent to issues that are relevant and meaningful. The attempt by one member of a family with significant media interests on Guam to launch a website under the domain name “guamnewsfactors.com” with a logo identical to the Guam News Factor logo, is clearly intended to counteract the impact our website has had on their often selective news coverage.
See the imposter “guamnewsfactors” home page.
According to Network Solutions whois search results, http://www.guamnewsfactors.com is registered to E.C. Development and John Calvo is listed as the Administrative and Technical Contact.
See guamnewsfactors registration information at Network Solutions’ whois search.
Click here to see the PDF of the registration information page from Network Solution’s whois search results captured today by the Guam News Factor team.
While we are uncertain of the motivation behind this imposter website that seeks to confuse the people of Guam and mislead them into thinking they are us, we are more puzzled at the lengths to which a member of the Calvo family would go to mislead anyone. The family owns KUAM and http://www.kuam.com. Already they have the means to cover news from whatever perspective they choose. The addition of this imitation website appears intended to separate itself from their news organization, yet given its near identical appearance to GuamNewsFactor.com, we can only assume it will cover news and issues.
The obvious ploy to confuse and mislead people leaves us wondering if Mr. Calvo may be lashing out against members of Marianas Media for a number of issues. Is it because of Marianas Media’s support of the Anti-Prop A campaign which contributed to Bridge Capital, financier of the Prop A campaign, pulling out of Guam and the departure of two members of the Calvo family, including Mr. John Calvo from Bridge Capital? Could it be that our recent coverage of the Guam Medical Society’s efforts to raise cigarette taxes threatens the lucrative cigarette distributorship (Mid Pacific Distributors) business, where he is now employed? Or perhaps Guam News Factor’s recent coverage of potential Mini-Hatch Act violations of announced Gubernatorial candidate Eddie Calvo and his running mate Ray Tenorio and our observation that KUAM news appears to selectively and positively cover interests beneficial to the family, such as the Calvo-Tenorio campaign. If Mr. Calvo’s intentions are simply to direct people away from GuamNewsFactor.com, then his motives are tantamount to censorship, seeking to shut out an alternative voice in Guam media.
Whatever the reason for starting this imposter website, we have great confidence in the people of Guam and their hunger for new perspectives on the issues that are important to our island. The Guam News Factor remains committed to bringing that perspective to you and to add meaningfully to the dialogue of relevant topics on our island.
Guam News Factor has been clear from the start about who we are and what we do.
Guam News Factor is a privately owned multimedia news website dedicated to (1) the timely relay of current events affecting the U.S. Territory of Guam and (2) the lending of additional perspective to unfolding Guam news stories through the interactive website GuamNewsFactor.com.
GuamNewsFactor.com seeks to provoke thought and discussion on happenings within the island of Guam and on activities directly affecting Guam. Through consideration of the context and consequences of stories published and broadcast daily by multiple news and information outlets. Through the shedding of new light on topics that are in the interest, convience and necessity of our public audience. And through direct links to stories published online.
Together, GuamNewsFactor.com and the Guam News Factor brand comprise one of several media assets owned and operated by Marianas Media. This corporation also owns and operates Channel 4 — Guam’s first fully digital commercial broadcast television station and an affiliate of The CW, a network owned by CBS and Time Warner Communications. Marianas Media is a multimedia production, news and entertainment company specializing in broacast production, broadcast programming & distribution, creative advertising and marketing solutions, live events and promotions, public relations consultation, media planning and execution, web development, and multimedia layout and graphical design through facilities in Guam and Manila and contacts throughout the United States, Asia and the Western Pacific.
See Guam News Factor’s About Us page.
Some have tried to challenge our credibility by questioning our reasons for not publishing bylines on our articles, however, all Guam News Factor stories are developed through collaborative effort of the Guam News Factor staff of writers, under the editorial direction of the Marianas Media management team, who have been covered extensively in other local media.

I am answering with this comment on June 6, 2009, D-Day. Did you hear the President of France, Pres. Sarkosy’s speech.? I think he triumphed over Pres. Obama’s speech. I think this was the speech of the CENTURY. . I hope Pres. Obama was listening intently. The French president praised America for its ideals of freedom and liberty. In contrast to Pres. Obama’s apologizing to Europe and the muslims of the Middle Eastern countries. Pres. Obama must begin to believe with all his heart in our founding ideas of freedom, liberty, and our ability to overcome all obstacle with our “can do” aattitude.
June 6th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
It would have been nice if Obama at least mentioned how Americans fought and died to free Muslims from tyranny in Bosnia, Kosovo, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan..But once again we find Obama, who evidently has some deep seated hatred for the America that existed BEFORE he became president, focusing on the negatives rather that accentuating the positive role America, throughout history, has played in freeing people from tyranny and oppression.
We were a great nation before he became president, and hopefully, we will still be a great nation when his presidency is over.
Somehow, I have my doubts, as he is trying to change the very foundations that have made our country great to achieve what he terms is “economic equality,” rather than economic opportunity.
Socialist, big government policies, historically kill freedom and opportunity that encourages incentive and economic growth by destroying the very wealth needed to sustain them. You can’t borrow your way out of debt, and spend your way to prosperity. It is mathematically impossible.
June 6th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
I don’t understand how people like you see strength in how much we are hated abroad. In what way is admitting our failures or finding common ground with our enemies a sign of weakness? I don’t understand why you would prefer to live with constant threats and chaos. The socialism argument is gettng real old too. Find something new.
June 6th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Right on!
I lived in Denmark for 3 years, a country that would have most of the neocons screaming “communist” and flaying around for a modern day McCarthy.
Guess what – I was every bit as free as I am in America and had some great programs, from excellent public transport, great health care, free adult education and recreation that I don’t get in America. The only problem is the high tax rate which I will admit, is far too high for me to consider living in Denmark permanently.
Obama is as much a socialist as Rush Limbaugh is a free and fair objective speaker!
June 6th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
“He is speaking our world into existence…it’s up to us to do the rest.” Excellent. Would to heavens we could grow, each of us, into this awareness of the power, the almost telepathic power–of words, of thoughts, of especially positive and progressive thoughts emanating from a person or a group who/that has grown through suffering…That would potentially be all of us. “He is speaking our world into existence.” That’s exactly right. He imagined it; envisioned it. OWNED IT. Now he’s sharing it and inviting the world to participate. THIS IS EXCITING!
It is also extremely sobering and “down-to-earth.”

Manuel Fernandez-Cabrero says “Who cares if he is a narcissist, lying, demagogue, who have depleted our country’s economy. Get in line, he is going to be our president like him or not.”
Uh…Manuel – first of all, I am a baby boomer and not some kool aide kid. I worked very hard to get Mr. Obama elected, as did many of my peers. We are not lemmings, like those of you who follow the Limbaughs of the world. Please give me ONE example – ONE quote that proves Obama is a) lying or b) representative of demagoguery.
The rest of the world knows how great our President is – it’s time for you people with mush for brains to do something constructive and help bring about the change that is required for OUR global community to survuve!
June 6th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
I wouldn’t admit that I worked hard to get Obama elected. You will find out soon enough, it was the biggest mistake you’ve ever made in your life. Yeah, we’ve been listening to this Obama for three years and look what he has got us…the highest unemployment than we’ve had in over 25 years and still growing and he has grown the debt to the tune of all presidents combined. I would rather follow the Limbaughs of the world than this immature radical who is destroying this country faster than any terrorist ever could. The rest of the world is laughing at how gullable people are, like yourself, who elected Obama. Yeah, they are clapping for him because they have hated our freedom for so long, they finally have someone running this country who will destroy it.
June 6th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
The best thing about President Obama is that he isn’t some macho, bigoted, pistol-packin’, ignorant, crazy white man! It was reported by Randi Rhodes on Air America today, that some white man answering to this description has announced his intention to shoot OUR president; our only hope for peace anywhere. The feds are looking for this guy. If anybody says they are going to shoot the President, believe it and call the Secret Service AND the FBI.

The Navy has the nerve to raise the water rates of the people who should own the water.
__________________________________
Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Sunday, June 7, 2009
Starting Oct. 1, the Navy will be charging Guam 26 cents more per thousand gallons of water.
The change from the current rate of $3.80 per thousand gallons to $4.06 was announced Friday. In a news release, the Naval Engineering Command Marianas stated the new rate was “consistent with the Navy’s promise toward graduated adjustments designed to minimize financial impact” to the Guam Waterworks and Power Authorities.
It also brings the rate more in line with what has been charged to Department of Defense customers on the island, the release said.
The command said the adjustment is based on the current cost of producing drinking water for the base and other customers in the southern villages of Agat, Santa Rita, Piti, Nimitz Hill, parts of Asan and Maina, and the Apra Harbor area.

Residents line up for Guam quarters
BY BERNICE SANTIAGO • PACIFIC DAILY NEWS • JUNE 5, 2009
Print this pageE-mail this articleShare
The image of Guam has been pressed into the hard metal of 90 million quarters, which have already begun circulating throughout the country. The commemorative coin was released on Guam yesterday.
“Coins are more than just a means of commerce, they also provide education,” said United States Mint Director Ed Moy, who was at Skinner Plaza in Hagåtña for the celebration of the release.
A person carrying change might be curious about the boat pictured next to the outline of the island, Moy said. They might want to learn about the flying proa, or about the latte stone, or about the Chamorro phrase “Guahan I Tano’ ManChamorro” printed on the coin. In doing so, they’ll understand a little more about Guam, Moy said.
“I think it looks good,” said 12-year-old Corey Santos of Agana Heights, who was waiting to receive one of the free Guam quarters handed out by Gov. Felix Camacho, first lady Joanne Camacho and Moy.
“It’s a big step for Guam, since they’re finally being included with the state quarters.”
Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo sponsored legislation with other members of Congress to expand the 50 States Quarter Program to U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Coins for the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands will be released later this year.
After 90 million Guam quarters have been produced, quarters with this design will never be minted again, Moy said.
Judith Gagan of Yona was in line yesterday with her children and her co-worker’s children, to exchange bills for $10 rolls of Guam quarters, which she will send to family in the mainland.
“It’s exciting,” Gagan said. “Guam has a quarter for its culture.”
At the ceremony, the governor thanked the community for 11,922 votes on the quarter design. Camacho said the quarter will help share Guam’s history, culture and language with the world.
In 2010, the U.S. Mint will begin issuing coins to celebrate national parks and historical sites, Moy said.
According to the U.S. Mint Web site, sites featured on the coins will be selected from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories, including Guam.
Moy said the process for choosing a design will be similar to that of the recent Guam quarter, and that the U.S. Mint will be working closely with citizens to recommend potential sites.
“It’s really nice,” said 13-year-old Sarah Earl, of Barrigada, who had received a Guam quarter with her friends. “It’s finally representing Guam.”

Guam taking up same-sex civil unions
Read comments (9) Recommend (2)Share
Associated Press
HAGATNA, Guam — Guam’s legislature is considering whether to allow same-sex civil unions in the Pacific island U.S. territory.
Vice Speaker Benjamin J. Cruz introduced the bill Wednesday that would allow gay couples who have lived on Guam for at least five years to apply for civil union licenses, which would allow them to receive all the benefits, rights and responsibilities granted to married heterosexual couples.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Agana is opposing the bill. Guam is about 85 percent Catholic.
Archbishop Anthony Apuron says homosexuality is wrong, and the legislation would equate civil unions with the institution of marriage.
The bill is expected to be referred to a committee for debate.

Al and Robert I don’t mean to be offensive, but I have to say that the argument is not just about race. It is also about gender. I am a white female and I get discriminated against by white males a lot.
A recent CNN poll says that 55% of americans believe that Affirmative Action should be eliminated. Interesting isn’t it that 55% of whites voted against Obama in the presidential election.
I want to tell white women that they should think about this one before they line up in lock step behind their men as usual. Affirmative Actin helps more than just OTWs. It helps women, the handicap, and gays, religious freedom, etc.
It is easy and a no brainer for the people (white males) who have all the benefits to say “we don’t need affirmative action.” No they don’t. But until woven are given equal pay for the same job, I know that we need Affirmative Action to level the playing field.

Our prior president was leaving things up to God and Dick Cheney. The current president has faced our social and economic crisis head on. While one may not agree with some of his appointments, this does not obviate the fact that he has the courage to deal with the crisis openly and deliberately. Most of his critics are people who either do not understand what is going on and naturally feel overwhelmed and/or who are also possibly a victim of these harsh economic times. It is a darn shame that we have to pin labels and generalize while Rome is burning. The Republican party is no longer the party of Lincoln. It has become a refuge for people who are naysayers and who do not wish to be in touch with reality. Lets try whatever works. Lets get rid of the ways that have not worked in the past.
June 6th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
he Republican party was never the party of Lincoln. At it’s start, it was more akin to today’s Democratic Party than to the Republican Party of the 20th century and today. We would never have had an Emancipation Proclammation under modern day Republicans. NEVER.
June 6th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Blaming Obama is the latest strategy of the Republicans, who hope that if they say it loud and often, the public will believe it. Of course, we won’t. Americans are no longer asleep. I can’t wait for the next election for the house and senate. It should be fun.
June 6th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
They think this will work because they temporarily got the nation confused between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. They think their echo chamber is limitless. But what happens to the echo chamber when we let in a little sunshine?
June 6th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Many Republicans are now eager to simply pin the blame on Obama as if it will magically purge them of all responsibility for what they’ve wrought. They have absolutely nothing constructive to contribute. No solutions. They are morally and intellectually bankrupt. Their sole aim and unifying purpose is to attack Obama and those working to solve these massive problems, in order to paint themselves the lesser of evils. The verdict on this nonsense was rendered in November and they still don’t get it.
I’ve seen them make statements to the effect that Obama may not have caused the problem, but since he is trying to to fix it, he bears all responsibility for whatever happens next. Nevermind how we got here and what he inherited. These people have actually convinced themselves that Obama should have, in 45 days, reversed these multi-trillion dollar problems that were years in the making This is the utter paucity of reason here with which we’re dealing.

I saw the Normandy speech. It was an insult. White people bled and feed the world. And a nigger gets to stand up there and pass judgement on us.
By the way they could lose the kite too. Check your history, we didn’t fight that war to free a bunch of kites. Fuckem. We fought to save the world from German domination and to kill japs.
We could have waited to enter the war after the Germans had ridded the world of that vermin. All we had to do was wait until the smoke cleared from the ovens.
As far as I am concerned, that is another reason to hate the japs. If they hadn’t forced us to enter the war too soon, we wouldn’t have that kite Howie write in that he was white.
He would be smoke. Okay Howie, you would be white smoke.

How come G.W. Bush gets “credited” with “keeping us safe” for every day he was in office except for that one day, September 11th, even though there were lots of dire warnings and an intercepted message that didn’t get translated because it wasn’t translated until after we were attacked?
Whereas, our new president gets blamed for this catastrophic mess that also happened on Bush’s watch?
Is this what is called “magical thinking?”
June 6th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Doesn’t anybody know already that if there is a problem in government, in the economy in the world, blame the previous or the following Democratic president. Repugs are the sleaziest, slimiest pieces of hypocrites that never do anything but ruin the country and the world and then put their heads between their own legs and blow.
June 6th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
The Republicans are so envious of Obamas success that they are trying to find a way of gaining a voice
in his winning game. But Obama sees the duplicity in their approaches and McCain for what he is. A shill
for the top 2 %. The tax benefits for the top money makers should be brought back to pre Bush years. He will move the Democrats in the progressive direction he has planned but he also must consider other avenues . Increase the loss claims of investors from $ 3,000. to $ 5,000, and remove the income tax for the unemployed drawing compensation. It is tough enough for them to get by on reduced income. The jobs will come but they need all the help they can get until then. If it takes backbone to overcome Republican political game playing it is time to get it on. Let the voters see who wants positive programs and not negative attitudes with no solutions.
June 6th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Is it a rumor that we are now racking up more debt than in all of US history combined? Envious of success that amounts to a stock market collapse and the greatest fear since the great depression. Trust me, No one is jealous of Obama! Everyone is concerned that the man they trusted is taking their money and giving it to the government. He approves billions in earmarks, put lobbyists in his cabinent and keeps the military complex rolling along indefineately.
The worst he’s done is destroy our hope that we will prosper as long as he’s in charge. It appears that isn’t what he wants.
June 6th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
anon26 – News flash–the stock market was collapsing years before Obama and the recession was already occurring–the man is trying to fin d solutions–if you have any I’d love to hear them…
he can’t undo in 45 days what it took eight years to destroy…
June 6th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Compare the number of lobbiests in Obama’s administration to the number of lobbiests and outright political appointments qualified on their ideology rather than their abilities, in the Bush admin. Guess what, not even close. Obama made a couple of exemptions but overall his administration is pristine so far compared with his immediate predecessor. He’s even appointed people from the other party for god’s sake. His spending is the kind of spending that got us out of the great depression, not the off-budget borrowed billions for a war we didn’t need, couldn’t justify, and couldn’t afford. Bush’s spending got us into this mess, Obama’s will get us out. And he’s not playing hide-the-dollars in the budgetary process, or using gimmicks to make himself look good. And his budgets will reduce the deficit again in four years. The only hopes he’s destroyed are the hopes that he will fail.
June 6th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
It’s Bush who racked up scary huge levels of debt…..Bush spent like a drunken sailor….on everything EXCEPT domestic wellbeing…..
the Iraq war, alone, has cost the U.S. $2.3 trillion dollars…..and we’re still there….
June 6th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Who added that past-tense suffix to the word trust? It’s not that I trustED Obama, I still do TRUST him.. In fact an overwhelming majority (74% if my memory serves me correctly) of Americans trust Obama on this clusterf**k. It’s a small, vocal minority that feels otherwise
June 6th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
No the BUsh administration wasn’t just a bad dream. He really do do away with a surplus, involve us in needless war and lied about the budget. Bush did his best to destroy the middle class and it’s hopes. I trust you make more than 250,000

Hello George #22, your naive comment has brought me out of hibernation. It is time someone answered a buffoon such as yourself and I am delighted to do so.
It is apparent that you are a blatant Racist who hates everyone but your own twisted kind. That is sad, I feel sorry for you. If it weren’t for a couple of ‘Kikes’ named Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer, there would never have been an Atom Bomb to drop on Japan and finally end the ugly war against the Japanese.
I am sure you meant to say “Kike”, but your lack of education reveals your illiteracy and just plain stupidity.
Isn’t it strange how these people who should have been smoke developed a Country called Israel, which has one of the best Armies in the World and has shown this many times when they demolished their neighboring enemy Countries which think as you do.
George, you are just a puff of smoke as are your sick beliefs, which are held by a very small minority of Neo-Nazi types who are hopefully more educated than yourself.
The World does not want nor need any more hatred, which is all you live for. If I were you I would just go to a park and fly a KITE.
Hope to meet you one day.

This is a question directed to George, commentator #22. Your last name wouldn’t happenen to be Bush, would it?
I only ask this because of the similarities in literacy and political ideology (this is your belief system in case you need help with this word).
Oh, by the way George a kite is a childs toy made of paper and wood and flies in the wind on a length of string.
A kike is a derogatory (this means insulting and offensive) term for a person who practices Judaism (that is a religion).
And a bigot is an intolerant person, in matters of religion, race, political views, sexual preferance or other beliefs.
In other words a bigot is what you are Georgie, A monkey could fly a kite George. You should aspire to be a monkey, that is the best you could ever hope to be. And a big improvement at that.

Michelle:
There has been a lot of racism and bigotry, brought about by people disapproving of Obama and his policies.
I, for one am surprised at the amount of racial tension in this country.
I believe it is a smoke screen for the real issue.
That the republican party is losing it’s strangle-hold on the American public, and the big corporations that have been squeezing, fleecing and enslaving the working man are losing their ability to do so.
Light has been shed on their going-ons, and the American People are not going to take this shit anymore.
The beast has been revealed.
