Ah Penny: I really didn’t have much time to address your comments yesterday but I really can not let another day go by without saying something. I mean, I have to say….your mormon faith is huge in this country. And the people who practice this faith are very influential. It is scary. And it is women like yourself who are preventing women from being voted into office. Because guess what? You’re obeying your man and voting for whomever he says you should vote for….most likely not women. Although women like Palin is not what we’re after in office either.
Yes, women need to get off of their asses and start supporting women that support women and our rights….our equality. We can not afford complacency, but we also cannot afford women who don’t have a mind of their own, nor ones that do and don’t use it. And when you talk the way you do, I just wonder if you have decided this all on your own (I seriously doubt that) or are you just succumbing to what you have been told God wants of you, by men, and taking your place in line as the secret third. How about a little self respect for number one ?- yourself.
My suggestion, and as much as I wish for it to sink it, I know how strong faith in something can be, is for you to start thinking about what you want. Start using that brain that God gave you. If you don’t want to get an abortion, fine. But let that be your decision, not just some words stuffed into your head taking up all of the space….not allowing you to think and use your brain. Use it. You might find that you are perfectly capable of making your own decisions…you might find that you have something to add to this society instead of just being brainwashed into conformity and subservience.
Al: Like your sharp words, your apologies are empty…they don’t mean anything to me because the past tells me that it will happen again and again. What I do appreciate is your humor – always have and most likely always will. Keep it coming – you make me laugh.
Marget: I love this blog too and I plan on being around for awhile :) Thanks ZL for the back – up :)
Roy: I do not see how you can say that you are not a bigot or a racist. Have you looked up the definition of those words? If you did you would notice right next to the definitions, George’s picture. And right below that a picture of you.
George: I think you have met your match.
Mekka: Thank you but I have done nothing. I was just following Anna’s lead. You can thank Anna for putting you on the map in Portland. I have just provided a venue for her to do so.
Jane: You are so right on. These repugnicants in congress do claim to be the ‘moral right’ and they do so by joining the ‘Promise club’. You know…the club that says, ‘I promise not to cheat on my wife.’ And then they condemn others who do have affairs, like they are so innocent. Yeah they claim to uphold their promises, until they are caught with their pants down. So much for their morals being intact, not to mention their balls :).
Some men cheat. You might even say that most men do. But don’t go claiming that you are a saint…don’t go joining the ‘promise club’ when you are being just as sneaky as the next guy. So much for practicing what you preach. Why is it that the people who claim to be so moral are the ones that end up with none? I guess they’ve been hangin’ out with the same people who preach that homosexuality is not natural or good, yet they are secretly gay themselves and gettin’ it good.
Drew: Thanks for sharing that example. Yes racism was invited into office by the people’s votes. And Murphy…you are correct about us putting in racist and then pretending that we don’t know that we are. What does that say? I also think you have raised a smart and preceptive son.
Lebon: There is no difference except the Iranians are standing up and doing something about it. We are doing nothing. More people need to recognize these atrocities that otw’s go through on a daily basis and fight for them. It is inhumane and cruel. If you cannot condone the behavior, what will you do that is different from what you usually do? We all need to change and take more action in support.
Anonymous: I am sorry to hear about your sister. Madaline will not go back on her promise. You will get the help that you need. I wish you good luck and success with the regime.
And on that note, I’ve got to go.
Peace out….
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle

Antioxidant Vitamin Supplements: The New Findings
JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH
Harvard Medical School
The disappointing results of a nine-year clinical trial on supplements of antioxidant vitamins (nutrients that neutralize harmful molecules called free radicals) show once again that achieving good health is not as simple as popping a pill. The Women’s Antioxidant Cardiovascular Study involved 8,171 women, average age 61, who had a history of cardiovascular disease or multiple risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and/or obesity. Some participants took placebos, and the rest took supplements of 500 mg of vitamin C daily… 600 international units (IU) of vitamin E every other day… and/or 50 mg of beta-carotene every other day. These dosages are several times greater than the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) and are similar to dosages used by members of the general public. Results: Antioxidant supplements, taken singly or in combination, did not prevent heart attacks, strokes or other cardiovascular events among high-risk women.
Possible exception: Vitamin E supplementation was associated with marginally fewer cardiovascular events among participants who had a prior heart attack or stroke and those who took their pills faithfully. These results, though intriguing, are not conclusive and may have been due to chance, given the large number of subgroups studied. Most other trials have been similarly discouraging, providing no convincing evidence that antioxidant supplements prevent cardiovascular events in people who are healthy or in those with cardiovascular disease.
Antioxidant-rich foods — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, vegetable oils — are another story. Studies show that an antioxidant-rich diet reduces cardiovascular disease risk, perhaps in part because these foods contain hundreds of additional nutrients that supplements cannot duplicate.
If you think that antioxidant pills might help and can’t hurt, consider…
Antioxidant supplements may reduce the effects of some drugs, such as cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.
Taking more than 400 IU of vitamin E daily may increase heart failure risk.
Megadoses of antioxidants may hinder the absorption and function of other nutrients. Example: High doses of beta-carotene may hamper other beneficial carotenoids.
Smokers who take high doses of beta-carotene are more likely to get lung cancer.
High doses of vitamin C may increase risk for kidney stones.
Best: Get your antioxidants from foods rather than supplements. It’s fine to take a multivitamin that contains 100% of the RDAs, plus a calcium/vitamin D pill to protect bones. But don’t let an overly optimistic faith in supplements make you complacent about the proven ways to protect your heart — with diet, exercise and, if necessary, drugs to control blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.

GUAM – Guam’s fishermen, commercial pilots, marine tour operators and the general public are advised to steer clear of Farallon De Medinilla (FDM) this week, as a “U.S. Military Unit” will be conducting live fire releases on the uninhabited island north of Saipan.
According to the website GlobalSecurity.org, the U.S. military still considers FDM highly instrumental in keeping fighter pilot instincts as sharp as can be:

Thanks for your article Michelle. I especially liked your comment about not supporting the likes of Palin. What do you think of Mika on the Morning Joe show. She is supposed to represent the left opinion but my girlfriends says she mostly kisses Joe’s ass.
I think she has some balance. They make fun of me, saying she is a ditz with noting but hair and tits. I would like your or others opinions on this.
Howie, Zen Lill and Al what are your opinions?

Mika is ridiculous. I would love to see the job posting that was out there when they went to fill her posotion. “WANTED: Attractive, large breasted ditz without any self-respoect at all, to join sleazy quasi-news network show. ‘FAS citizens also mistreated at Guam airport’
CNMI, Guam leaders ask for DHS investigation
By Haidee V. Eugenio
Reporter
Citizens of the Freely Associated States also endure mistreatment at the Guam international airport similar to those experienced by CNMI travelers, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said yesterday, as he supported a call for an investigation into the matter by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
“We don’t want our people to continue to be treated like criminals because that’s exactly how they’re treated,” Fitial said in a news briefing on Capital Hill yesterday afternoon.
Delegate Gregorio “Kilili” C. Sablan yesterday asked Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to investigate the alleged negative treatment of CNMI travelers at the Guam airport by federal authorities, a day after Guam Gov. Felix P. Camacho told Saipan Tribune that he will raise the issue with federal officials.
Fitial said he supports Sablan’s call for a DHS investigation, after the two had a teleconference yesterday morning.
He said he also discussed the matter with Camacho when he was here at the opening of the 26th Pacific Islands Environment Conference on Tuesday, as well as with the assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy.
Two Japanese businessmen managing multi-million investments in the CNMI for years earlier shared with Saipan Tribune their personal experiences at the Guam airport where they said they were subjected to verbal abuse and foul gestures, and were held for a few hours, making them almost miss their connecting flights.
They said Guam was not their last destination, as they were just transiting.
“There are other cases, and some of these cases also involve FAS citizens, including the Republic of the Marshall Islands, so it’s increasing in terms of intensity as far as mistreatment and harassment of CNMI and FAS citizens on Guam,” Fitial said.
The FAS consists of the Marshall Islands, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia, which is composed of Yap, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Kosrae.
Fitial cited as an example an e-mail he received from a friend from the Marshall Islands who complained about mistreatment at the Guam airport.
The governor said this has been going on for some time now. This is, however, the first time that victims of alleged mistreatment at the Guam airport have raised their concerns with local officials, including Senate President Pete P. Reyes (R-Saipan) and House Speaker Arnold I. Palacios (R-Saipan), who in turn raised the issue with Fitial through a letter. Reyes said his former wife, a U.S. citizen with Filipino descent, suffered the same fate at the Guam airport.
Fitial said the gravity of the matter prompted its inclusion on the agenda of the Micronesian Chief Executives Summit in July.
“We suspect it’s more of Saipan-Guam people but I don’t know what it is between Guam and other [Pacific] nations. We have this feud between the Chamorros of Guam and Chamorros of the CNMI. That’s what we suspect. I hope we’re wrong,” Fitial said.
Customs, immigration and other enforcement personnel on Guam are federal employees and are not under the authority of the local government.
Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos said the Fitial administration is not familiar with the composition of the Guam airport enforcement officers, and “where they come from.”
Guam Gov. Felix P. Camacho, in an interview on Tuesday, said his administration wants “to ensure that our federal partners will work along with us, that there’s no room for a sense of bigotry or prejudice or use of abusive language or mistreatment of citizens or any visitors to the Marianas, be it Guam or Saipan.”
‘Troubling’
Sablan, in a June 24 letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, raised “very serious concerns” about reports of federal enforcement officers singling out CNMI travelers at the A.B. Won Pat International Airport on Guam.
“I write to ask that you investigate these reports-and that any such negative treatment immediately stop,” Sablan said.
One of the businessmen who experienced mistreatment at the Guam airport said he was told by an immigration officer that green card holders from the CNMI cannot re-enter the Commonwealth without employment authorization.
Sablan, in his letter to Napolitano, said this statement “is not only false, but is also beyond the purview of federal immigration officials.”
“These reports are deeply troubling at a time when there is a heightened need for trust between my constituents in the Northern Mariana Islands and the Department of Homeland Security. I thank you for your prompt investigation of these reports and speedy resolution of any problems those investigations reveal,” Sablan told Napolitano.
The start of transition to federal immigration in the CNMI is set for Nov. 28, but DHS has yet to issue regulations on the CNMI-only transitional worker program and investor/student program.
DHS has so far issued only a joint visa waiver regulation that excludes the CNMI’s emerging tourism markets of China and Russia.

If you are bothered by occasional or frequent constipation:look in the mirror and repeat the following phrase three times in succession when symptoms occur:
“My financial and personal well being are totally in the hands of : Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Tim Geithner, Rahm Emmanual, Barney Frank , Chris Dodd, and Al Gore”
If that doesn’t scare the crap out of you, you are destined to be backed up for the rest of your life.

Dear MoveOn member,
Health care reform is in trouble in the Senate.
Conservatives in Congress, including some Democrats, are trying to kill Obama’s public health insurance option not by opposing it outright, but by pushing weak half-measures and calling them “public plans.”1 The latest is a proposal for small, regional “co-ops” that would have no chance of competing against insurance companies to bring costs down.2
If we act immediately, we have a good shot at defeating ploys like the “co-op.” The key is to make it clear that we support a strong public health insurance option and lay out exactly what that means.
Click below and we’ll fax a flier in your name (for free!) to Sens. Burris and Durbin that sets the bar for a
Available to all of us: A strong public health insurance option should be available to anyone who chooses to participate. If you like your current plan, you can keep it; if you want to participate in the public health insurance plan, you can choose that.
A national plan with real bargaining clout: In order to truly control costs and compete with private health insurance plans, a strong public health insurance option must be available nationwide.
Ready on day one: Every day we wait on real reform, health care costs continue to rise. A strong public health insurance option with a broad network of providers right out of the gate is key to building a

Lobbyists + Party of No = it is very difficult to get improvements made to anything that might adversely effect the corporate quarterly bottom line.
With both health care reform and energy reform, there are strong established industries that do not want any changes made. For instance, the NYT reported that the CEO of Exxon paid himself over $440 million in 2005. Obviously a system that allows a few individuals to become more powerful than medieval kings and queens is not going to lay down and roll over just because the vast majority of citizens want change.

Camacho Reacts To CNMI’s Allegations Against Immigration Officer
GUAM – Guam Governor Felix Camacho told the Saipan Tribune yesterday that “he will bring up with federal authorities the issue of alleged harassment of CNMI travelers at the Guam airport, and encourages the CNMI government to do the same.”
He also told the Tribune he is “alarmed by the nature of the complaint” spelled out in a letter from CNMI Senate President Pete P. Reyes (R-Saipan) and CNMI House Speaker Arnold I. Palacios (R-Saipan) to CNMI Governor Benigno R. Fitial.
The Tribune reports that CNMI Representatives Diego T. Benavente (R-Saipan) and Rosemond Santos (R-Saipan) presented Governor Camacho with a copy of the letter while visiting Guam on Monday.
The Tribune caught up with Camacho at the launch of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 26th Pacific Islands Environment Conference at the Saipan World Resort yesterday.
According to the Tribune, Reyes has identified at least one officer for alleged harassment

a very sad state of affairs ..(hmm..puns intended or not ?)
yes, I understand human fallibility..we are not perfect
I also understand the ebb and flow of relationships
the “spark” disappears after kids and 20 yrs
the moral side is: you shouldn’t cheat
(his wife was right:: relationship needs hard work, love, commitment)
in addition to the private side, (and I do feel for his wife, whom he treats like a loyal staff member)
there are the responsibilities of his job…is this the person you want in office?
the man seems unstable, in words and actions…perhaps he needs to resign
and he didn’t “have the courage to admit it”, he was “outed” by his behavior and the emails that were being released
add to this the hypocrisy , his past condemnation of bill Clinton
makes it hard to claim moral high ground
for his wife (if she wants him) and his kids I hope there is hope! and it is too bad they could not have dealt with this privately w/o it becoming a public spectacle
and what is it with governors? Sanford, Spitzer, Blagovich
June 25th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Oh for God’s sake Sanford. Stop being so dramatic. Either you believed every sickening little homily the religious-righters are so infamous for, and should be shot for your devastating hypocrisy. Or you are a human being and error-prone. But you can’t have it both ways. Cut your heart out if you must. But people wouldn’t be killing themselves with laughter if you hadn’t been so freakin holy.
The real crime is in continuing to love the woman and playing at being a righteous Southern Republican robot.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
If we ever needed a Health Care Plan, we sure do need it now. We need to come to the aid of these folks heading up our Govt and making bad decisions that are affecting the American People. As I have said dereliction of duties of such magnitude should be reason to call for resignation, and seek help. We need folks capable of minding the store and being accountable in this Country, not folks secretly deserting the store, the goods and the country, while acting like a deadbeat dad. We don’t know how many times this type of escape has happened or if it will happen again. We need a conductor on this train because, This appears to be a train wreck waiting to happen.

SANFORD SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY – NOT BECAUSE OF HIS ILLICIT AFFAIR, SINCE SO MANY POINTING FINGERS AT HIM DO IT ALSO – BUT BECAUSE OF HIS HYPOCRISY, HIS LYING, AND HIS DISRESPECT FOR HIS FAMILY AND HIS CONSTITUENTS.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
How do you spend Fathers Day? Skip out on your family and spend a week with your mistress. Sanford is the poster boy for the Republican Hypocrite Party.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Well….most likely he justified his actions by having the person with whom he was visiting call him “Daddy”.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Gov.Sanford should resign, because he went AWOL from his job not 4 an emergency, but to carry on an illicit affair with his mistress! If you, me , or anyone else disappeared from our job our employer would fire us on the spot, no ifs, ands, or buts. Aso when military personal go AWOL they are disciplined, and or put in the stockade! The double standard in this country that allows these politicians to break the law, make their own rules, and, in Gov.Sanfords case leave work without cause, explanation, or reason (except his being horney) truly amazes me !!! It’s Shocking that these politicians, with the consent of some Americans, let these hypocrites carry on without any repurcusions/discipline which sets a bad example for us mere citizens. WE wouldnot get away with a 5 day disappearing act form our place of work, neither should Gov.Mark Sanford, he should resign, or be impeached! Do we know yet if he was stupid enough to use taxpayer funds for his Argentine rendevous’s, hopefully it’s being investigated. I feel sorry for his wife and, 4 sons!!!
June 25th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
I’m not surprised, from the day he “dissapeared” everything started smelling stink. These Republicans so called “religious rights” folks has proven to be the biggest hypocrites in America’s politics. They will tell their “clueless base” anything that sounds good, but will not practice what they preach. Why we don’t hear from ALL those right wing preachers condenming these acts. Maybe it is because they also have something in their closet. Can anyone believe that this guy Sandford was considered one of the top GOP candidates for 2012 with Sarah Palin? so called “religious rights” folks has proven to be the biggest hypocrites in America’s politics”
Sorry but I must disagree! They at least admit that they did something wrong and apologize (and usually suffer some punishment). On the other hand when it is a member of, can we say, non-religious left all we here is “I did nothing wrong!” followed by a stonewall. In the hope, usually fulfilled that people will just forget. Result no apology, no punishment, no nothing.
If that does not qualify as hypocrisy the definition needs to be changed for all of us, not just Democrats in government.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
The only reason they “admit” their wrong doing is because they got caught! The “religious right” are the biggest hypocrites on the planet. They slam others for cheating then they turn around do the same thing. Obviously hypocrisy causes stupidity?
June 25th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
OH yeah! he’s human for sure, as well as Governor of an ultra conservative state who wanted to impeach Clinton for same thing he’s just been caught out doing. When the political elite like Sanford start rambling on about god’s law and Christian family values you know something stinks!
What is it with the Christian Right when one of their own gets caught out “oh they’re just human” when it’s Clinton or any one else who doesn’t agree with the values they spout they want to bury him.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
And I agree with you;BUT when you jump in the ring and make the rules and start suggesting that others resign who have made the same mistakes as you….then you move to “dig a pit for your brother, dig two”. That’s the terrible thing that happens when you mix politics and religion. So for him it is a big mess because he has been such a finger pointer at others who have made the same mistake.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
It’s more about the fact that he he been a big family-values candidate and was one of the major finger-pointers at Clinton for his behavior-that and the fact he abandoned his custodial duties as governor to pursue his affair.his actions are. to say the least irresponsible-all the more so if it turns out that he was doing it on the taxpayers’ dime.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I agree mace, I could care less about his personal life, it is the blatant hypocracy. Holding in judgement the bedroom exploits of others, and casting the first stone. How much more evidence does the religious right need, that NO political party holds the patient on morals or family values??? One party boasts about “owning” those “rights” on morality, does the other????
June 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
The foundation of the Republican Party is Character and Morals (i.e. Ronald Regan). This guy should not be in the Republican party, let alone hold public office as a Republican.
June 25th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I will just love to hear Republicans stop trying to summon up Ronald Reagan. I was an adult when he was President and he wasn’t nothing that I would want to pattern anyone after. It was after his reign that we started to see so many homeless people and so much growth of greed in this country. this was the man who thought that catsup was a vegetable and that we were in Grenada because they had nutmeg and we needed nutmeg for America to have Christmas. always expounded “family values” and didn’t even speak to his own children. Please, know more about RR before you start trying to compare him as a “positive” to others. I was glad when he left office too.

Hi Peter from Guam (#7 Comment). All American airlines are adhering to strict and sometime unfair treatment to their passengers by Homeland Security.
Unfortunately since 9/11 we had to give up some rights to prevent Terrorism. I feel safer since I have nothing to fear but the hassle of Security at Airports going through my personal posessions.
Yes, there is Racial Profiling, but it is better to be safe than sorry. We have not had another terrorist incodent since 9/11 because we stepped up security at airports.
One should not feel like a criminal if they have nothing to hide.
I hate giving up any rights in any way. It gives power to the Government to be unconstitutional by arresting people without a warrant and holding them without the ability to call an attorney.
The world is a crazy place and Americans are walking targets when we leave the U.S. so a little hassle at the airport makes me feel safe when traveling.
Sorry for the inconvenience in Guam.

I respectfully disagree, Howie.
We hadn’t had a terrorist incident previous to 9/11. So, this campaign is carefully sculpted by the same party that created the 9/11 situation in the first place. I get so tired of the statement that we haven’t had an incident since 9/11. The airport security is a joke and a promotional campaign run by the right wing government to continue the fear breeding of the Amerikan consciousness.
Studies have shown it has done near to nothing excepting adding stress, time and taxes to all travelers. This action simply gives an unnecessary means of rationalizing more racial profiling to OTW’s.
It is another means of letting slip into the consciousness of acceptable little nuanced actions of removing rights and personal liberties and keeping the lemmings in fear of the wolf.
The mantra to the public is that we “had” to give up some of our rights in order to be more safe, is a veil to the big brother means of monitoring the travel of any and all citizens, with a closer eye through these new found legal boundry’s to monitor and track OTW’s.

Doug, You are correct, now that I think about what you have written. Rights are being taken away and that is unacceptable. I do not want to swallow the Kool aid.
It did give me a false sense of safety. That is why it works for the Government which loves to instill fear in all of us.

To all you People who Comment as ‘Anonymous’, I think you are all cowards. You can’t even come up with a fake name to be referred to by Michelle or the Bloggers. How low can you get?
Isn’t your comment worth putting a name behind?
You might as well talk to yourself in the bathroom where no one can see or recognize you and your opinions on matters you wirte in about.
I am asking Michelle to not allow 21 out of 37 comments to be from Annonymous. How can she possibly answer you? If you fear being recognized by your opinions, then don’t blog.
I personally am sick an tired of seing this and I believe Michelle, our blog Host is too.
Grow some character and stand up for what you believe. You make me ashamed to be of the same species.
Does anyone agree with this?

I’m with you, Howie. I won’t address an anonymous, they can go pontificate at a cocktail party.
I haven’t seen the Morning Joe Show. But if it’s anything like the Happy Hour Show (or should I say the ‘whose boobs are bigger’ show?) I’ll pass…oh alright I’ll watch – once : )

Doug,
I agree with you. I believe the 9/11 tragedy was the design of forces far more sinister than Muslim terrorists. The current state of our economy is the direct result of this incident. I would like to see those responsible brought to justice. Terrorism can only exist if people are terror stricken. The die has been cast, are we to conform to fit the mold?

I believe I have just as much right to not sign a name as you have to sign you name. If I choose to make up a name that is my right. If I choose NOT to make up a name that is my right too.
Those who feel that they can dictate to others something that the majority may agree with forget that our Constitution was formed to protect the rights of the MINORITY from the will of the Majority.
So to all the majority who feel that we anonymous entries must make up a name to suit their laziness to comment on the number of the comment, I say hypocrite.
That what this blog calls ALL those who profess equality until the act, deed, idea, etc disagrees with them or makes the uncomfortable.
Michelle will just quietly laugh at your suggestion that we be curbed or inconvenienced in any way.
Zen Lill, I can’t speak for any other anonymous commenter, but I have read your blog on occasion. While I enjoy the articles you present, I am not encouraged by the repartee.
Perhaps it is because you are so rigid with the rules you place on those who might wish to comment.

ZINC BOLSTERS IMMUNITY
Zinc, an essential element, exists in nearly every cell of the body and is critical to proper immune function. The importance of its role in providing immune support is not yet fully understood, though a new observational study sheds more light on its significance, especially in the elderly.
The recent study assessed the relationship of zinc to health in 578 residents, mean age 84, across 33 nursing homes in Boston. Compared with residents who had low zinc levels, people with normal levels had fewer cases of pneumonia, required fewer antibiotic prescriptions for it, and when they did get pneumonia, they had it for fewer days. Additionally, patients with normal zinc levels had a 39% lower all-cause mortality rate than those with low zinc levels.
You might think an obvious solution would be to give zinc supplements to everyone with low serum zinc levels. But it’s not really so simple, explains Simin N. Meydani, DVM, PhD, of the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, one of the study authors. Key questions need to be answered first, Dr. Meydani told me. First, she says, there is the need to explore what’s an appropriate level of zinc for the elderly. Excess zinc disrupts the balance of other minerals including copper and iron and, ironically, it also may have an adverse reaction — weakening the immune response in some people. As with almost all natural and synthetic compounds, there are optimal individual doses. Dr. Meydani says that Tufts researchers are now planning a study of nursing home residents to investigate what serum levels of zinc are most beneficial.
In the meantime, though, there is enough evidence from this and previous studies to underscore the importance of maintaining adequate zinc levels. You can obtain zinc from dietary sources, in particular oysters, as well as red meat, poultry, beans and dairy. However, some medications such as antacids interfere with zinc metabolism, as do certain infections or chronic inflammation so, as always, consult your physician.

U.S. Must Defend Guam From North Korean Aggression
By Jeff Marchesseault
GUAM – While national discussions today focus on defending Hawaii from a potential North Korean missile attack on the Fourth of July, Washington D.C. must also consider the potential threat to Guam.
It has been reported that while Guam and Okinawa lie within North Korea’s 4,000-mile missile strike zone, Hawaii is about 500 miles outside of this zone.
It may not be clear yet whether a North Korean ship suspected of carrying illicit weapons in the Pacific, and now being monitored by the U.S., poses any direct threat to Hawaii or any other U.S. defense target, including Okinawa, Alaska and Guam. But in the interest of the broadest scope of safety and security for our region, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates must remain alert to any potential outcome.
According to a recent AFP news article:
“We do have some concerns if they were to launch a missile … in the direction of Hawaii,” Gates told a news conference on Thursday.
Gates said he had approved the deployment of THAAD[Theater High Altitude Area Defense] missile defense weaponry to the US state and radar “to provide support” in case of a possible North Korean launch.
And he said that ground-based defenses in Alaska were also at the ready.
“I would just say I think we are in a good position should it become necessary to protect American territory,” he said.
This AFP article makes no mention of any Gates plan to defend or not defend the U.S. Territory of Guam, however. For the residents and military families of Guam, this is a noticeable omission in light of the fact that the same article mentions the remote possibility that Guam could be among North Korea’s accessible strike options on Independence Day.
Here is an excerpt from the AFP article explaining why Guam and Okinawa are least-likely targets among Pyongyang’s accessible missile-strike options:
The Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun meanwhile reported that Tokyo’s defense ministry believes that North Korea might now be planning to launch a two-stage or three-stage Taepodong-2 missile towards either Japan’s Okinawa island, Guam or Hawaii.
But the ministry said launches toward Okinawa or Guam were “extremely unlikely” because the first-stage booster could drop into waters off China, agitating Beijing, or hit western Japanese territory, the report said.
If the missile were fired in the direction of Hawaii, the booster could drop in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) well before the missile’s remaining part flies over northern Japan and towards North America.
While it is important for the U.S. to prepare missile-interception defenses for Hawaii and Alaska, it is equally important for the U.S. to defend Guam from any chance of North Korean aggression. Not only is Guam an increasingly important U.S. defensive deflection point, it is also a loyal and patriotic member of the American political family with a long and glorious history of defending freedom in the name of U.S democratic principles — principles that place the freest nation in the world at odds with one of the world’s most oppressive and aggressive regimes.
This story includes contributions from John Dela Rosa.

It seems reasonable to assume that homosexuality could never rise to much more than a small minority of non-procreating members of a society. If current studies are any indication, that modern tolerant societies acknowledge the homosexuality of only about 1% of its population, it seems reasonable to assume that such numbers might be consistent with historical populations.
It also seems reasonable to assume that gay men have a very different perspective on the archaic masculinity of historical figures–a perspective that is, as Larry acknowledges, wishful thinking. It seems reasonable to assume that modern gay men couldn’t possibly understand the concept of two men sharing a bed for the purpose of sleep, or that disproportionate gender ratios in a community does not necessarily instigate mass homosexuality.
There are few phrases in the English language more doomed to ironic backfire than “it seems reasonable to assume.” And even fewer that so clearly betray a vacuous argument.
We don’t need to gay up our past to support and demand rights for our present. We don’t need to lie, distort, or fabricate a history to expect equal rights and responsibilities.

You’re the one w/ the wishful thinking.
According to science, about 10% of humans are gay, and almost 40% are bisexual, and just like left-handedness (yes, 10%, not the 1 or 2% the right-handers used to claim) that was once punished, there has always been homosexual pairbonds in humanity, and long before homo sapiens evolved, for there are homosexual pairbonds throughout the higher species, and NO NOT ONE OTHER SPECIES EVEN BOTHERS ITS GAY MEMBERS…probably because the gay pairs are the only ones who will readily adopt young ones abandoned due to the death of parents in the wild through predators or accidents.
George Washington never fathered a child but sure had some great male comrades like Lafayette. As Socrates and Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, there’s always been men who love other men, and some of them were great leaders. Too bad America got trapped in word games by fundamentalists who claim the babble is literally true, for if it is, the world is flat, the sun goes around the earth, and it’s an awful sin to eat ham, pork, bacon and oysters.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:19 am
According to the latest scientific statistical studies the percentage of gay men is more like 3-4%, not 10%. Ten percent is the old wishful thinking notion.
I have no idea what percentage of men are bisexual, but 40% is highly dubious.
None of this matters as far as equal rights are concerned. Gays, lesbians, and probably bisexuals are born that way; it’s not a choice – it’s like skin tone or eye color.

As has already been stated, men taking the opportunity to engage in sexual acts with one another when women are unavailable for long periods of time- well, it happens sometimes. And no, that does not mean they are gay. It may mean they are bi in some cases, desperate/ horny in others…..and occasionally, yes, gay.
I have always been liberal, a strong supporter of gay marriage, and have had many gay male friends throughout my entire adult life. One thing I have noticed over and again with some, is an apparent need that verges at times on the obsessive, to find “evidence” that another man might be gay. Most men aren’t. As empathetic as I’ve always considered myself, it tries my patience.

Welcome to the world that lesbians and women live in.
As a lesbian who has had to deal with many heterosexual men’s obnoxious and repetitve come-on’s even when they’ve been clearly told that I have no interest in their gender, period, and, knowing that most heterosexual women have had to deal with many heterosexual men’s obnoxious and repetitive come-on’s even when the men have been clearly told the heterosexual women have no interest in them, period–I’d say the problem you complain about is more about wishful thinking, bad manners, and lack of respect for other people’s boundaries.

Hafa adai Peter from Guam. I have been told by someone very knowledgeable, that a missile strike will occur in the near future 700 miles off Hawaii. He did not say July 4th but it could be. It will be sent by the crazy ‘Fearless Leader’ Kim Jong Il of North Korea. It is just a Missile with no Nuclear warhead. He is not stupid so his plans are calculated to cause fear and terror among the Island Nations of the South Pacific and provoke the U.S.
It is his way of showing the World and his poor Nation that North Korea is a power to be reckoned with. Kim Jong II is an Egomaniac just as his Father was.
It will not strike Guam or Hawaii, but 700 miles is very close. I too would be fearful if I were in the area.
North Korea is a scary nation. It has the 4th largest army in the World and the last time we went to war with them in the 1950′s, we lost. We cannot hit them with Nukes because of North Koreas proximity to South Korea. They know this and are playing a very dangerous game.
I hope this information was helpful.
