Politics Is A Daily Job
Posted by Michelle Moquin on October 8th, 2009
Good morning.
Mai Ling: It is my understanding that we are now clear on this matter. But yes, I would appreciate you re-examining your feelings towards humans.
Sharon: You need not worry. Politics will always be an area of conversation on my blog. I did not start this blog thinking it was going to go politico, but it has and I am grateful that it has. I am not tired of politics but frustrated of the direction that politics has taken. And that is no fault, but our own. I agree with you in your statement saying that those who wish to manipulate and control us NEVER get tired of politics. Our complacency in this world is what lead us to be in the position that we are in now.
Quite honestly, I am disappointed in many of the people who were so excited, who were so willing to put so much time getting Obama in the white house, and have now taken a break, as if to say, “We voted him in, now it’s time for him to do his job.” Politics and striving for what we want is a daily job…it is just the beginning of creating the changes that we fought so hard for when we were trying to get him elected.
If we relax on our laurels, we could possibly end up like the people in your country, and saying the words, “If no one in my family has been maimed or killed, then it is a good day.” People in America can’t even fathom saying those words. The worst that most can think, is that they will be jobless and homeless, not living in fear of being killed. But if our country continues in the direction that it is….if our country continues to spiral toward a worse economic disaster, we just might be saying those words. I don’t want to be saying those words.
Hey, I never thought our country would be in the state that it is in, but it is. And it could just as easily get a lot worse if we don’t band together and make politics a conscious part of our daily lives. If you don’t like the direction that politics is going, then participate and change it. No one said it was going to be easy.
Evelyn: Thanks for the heads up on the Swine Flu – great information. I have put the items on my shopping list. And thanks for your article too Ruth. There are many moms out there reading so I’m sure they will find your article interesting. Oh and love the exchange of words between you too – sounds like me and my mom. :)
N: You are correct. The interest of the people is not in the forefront of their minds or they would not be so opposing. It is disturbing to say the least, and not surprising at all.
I don’t know which ‘initial’ I am speaking to, or if what I’m going to say is even relevant to your comments, but I am really tired right now, and I really don’t care, so I’ll just speak what’s on my mind, and what’s been on my mind….and rant….of spending money on war, the deficit, not spending money on health care….blah, blah, blah….
The same people, who rant their protestations about health care reform…where were you when we were spending billions in the Iraq war? Where were you when the fear mongers were spending those same billions, all in the name of safety and protection for the U.S. citizens? It was okay to create such debt then.
But now?….when so many citizens are losing their health insurance, when so many citizens are denied coverage, when so many citizens are having to sell everything they own in order to care for a sick, loved one….where is the love for the U.S. citizens now?
Why are you against spending billions in the name of safety and protection now? More than anything citizens need a roof over their heads for safety, and protection from sickness and disease. What is more important than a nation with healthy, strong citizens? So much for love thy neighbor.
And speaking of the media…why doesn’t the media ever point this out?
It makes me think, that if fear is bred by enough people, such as the actions of our past administration, and the controlled media, and the citizens of our nation feel personally threatened as a whole, such as the threat of terrorism, people will band together and do something about it.
And contrary to that, if people refuse to look past their own needs or the needs of their families, if people just don’t care about the livelihood and health of others, as many stated in that DC tea party video I posted awhile ago…if those same people aren’t personally going to be affected, then they will turn a blind eye, and do nothing to protect their neighbor. Like I said, “Where’s the love?” (sigh…)
Vera: Nice try, but you don’t fool me. You are not an Earthling girl.
Readers: Comments? Rants? Chitchat? Blog it baby.
Now, I’m going to eat a giant muffin and see how soon I can get out of my D-cup….and I am a female. :)
Peace out…
Gratefully your blog host,

Hi Mischa and Sharon, my no comment comment on politics dud nit mean I dint care or that I hive up or anything like that, I’m just not stating here much anymore. I’m not that interested on inviting repugs like George, or his ilk into a debate, we all know what needs to be done, if not, reread above. Get off that high horse and take sone action instead of debating about birth certificates and other distracting nonsense, like calling health care ‘socialist’ etc…
Al, the joke is about the store owner getting lots of action under the guise of teaching the frog the finer details involved in eating pussy. I have never given any thought to how a frog tongue might feel or is it too fast, etc…you are one funny man : )

Please tell the aliens not to do any more earthquakes near Guam. We are on a Tsunami watch because of the one near Australia. We are not shooting at their base on the moon.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
For the second time in a week, a Tsunami Watch was declared for Guam following a major earthquake in the Pacific region. According to Reuters, an earthquake hits measuring 8.1 on the Richter Scale hit Vanuatu at around 8:30am Guam time.
A similar advisory was issued last week when a quake occured near Indonesia.
*UPDATE*
Just after 10:15am, the Office of Homeland Security/Civil Defense announced that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had cancelled all warnings and watches.
========================================
GUAM – The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) placed Guam on a Tsunami Watch and has issued their first Tsunami bulletin at 10:17pm Pacific Time in connection with an earthquake near the Vanatu Islands off the eastern coast of Australia. The earthquake is rated at an 8.0 on the Richter Scale.
A TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR

The PTSC provided that the preliminary parameters of the earthquake are as follows:
ORIGIN TIME – 2203Z 07 OCT 2009
COORDINATES – 13.0 SOUTH 166.3 EAST
DEPTH – 33 KM
LOCATION – VANUATU ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE – 8.0
At this time it is uncertain if a tsunami was generated. The bulletin was issued only in connection to the earthquake and that an earthquake of this magnitude has the potential to develop into a tsunami.
More updates will follow on an hourly basis or sooner if conditions warrant.
=============================================
Tell the aliens that we are peace loving peoples of the pacific. The Australians are howlies who are for the most part people who think they are better because of the color of their skins. But if they pick an earthquake to punish them they will be punishing us too.
That is not a fair. We do not discriminate against the howlies or anyone else.

The Miraculous Power of Nuts
Joy Bauer, RD
Nuts are among the most healthful foods you can eat. Rich in nutrients, they can help prevent some of the most common — and most serious — diseases.
Example: In a long-running health study conducted by researchers at Loma Linda University, participants were asked what foods they ate most often. Those who ate nuts five or more times a week were about 50% less likely to have a heart attack than those who ate them less than once a week.
FORGET THE FAT
Many Americans avoid nuts because they want to cut back on fat and calories. It’s true that a single serving of nuts can have 20 grams (g) or more of fat and 180 to 200 calories, but most of the fats are healthful fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fat. Americans need to get more, not less, of these fats. As long as you limit yourself to a small handful of nuts daily — the recommended amount, unless otherwise noted — you don’t need to worry about the “extra” calories.
Each type of nut contains a different mix of nutrients, fats and protective antioxidants, which can “neutralize” cell-damaging free radicals. People who eat a variety of nuts will get the widest range of benefits. Raw, toasted or roasted nuts are fine as long as they are unsalted.
Here’s what nuts can do…
NUTS FOR THE HEART
All nuts are good for the heart, but the following nuts are especially beneficial…
Macadamia nuts. Of the 21 g of total fat in a serving of macadamias, 17 g are monounsaturated — the kind of fat that lowers a person’s levels of harmful LDL cholesterol without lowering levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol. Both the antioxidants and the monounsaturated fat in macadamias have anti-inflammatory effects — important for curtailing arterial damage that can lead to heart disease.
Peanuts. Actually a type of legume, not a true nut, peanuts contain 34 micrograms (mcg) of folate per one-ounce serving, a little less than 10% of the recommended daily amount. Folate is a B vitamin that lowers levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that damages arteries and increases the risk of heart disease.
Peanuts also are high in L-arginine, an amino acid that is converted by cells in blood vessels into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide improves circulation and may inhibit fatty buildups in the arteries.
Pistachios. A 2007 study conducted by Penn State University found that pistachios lower blood pressure. Men who added 1.5 ounces of shelled pistachios to their daily diets had drops in systolic pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) of 4.8 points. The antioxidants and healthy fats in pistachios relax blood vessels and allow blood to circulate with less force.
ALMONDS FOR BONES
Just about everyone needs more calcium, the mineral that strengthens bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. The recommended daily amount is 1,000 milligrams (mg). Almonds have more calcium than other nuts, with about 80 mg in 20 to 25 nuts. For people with lactose intolerance, who have trouble digesting dairy, a daily dose of almonds helps raise calcium to bone-protecting levels.
Blood pressure bonus: One serving of almonds has 98 mg of magnesium, about one-fourth the recommended daily amount. Magnesium, along with potassium and calcium, controls the relaxation and contraction of blood vessels and can help control blood pressure.
BRAZIL NUTS FOR PROSTATE
Brazil nuts are a superb source of selenium, with about 155 mcg in just two nuts. The recommended daily amount is 55 mcg. They’re also high in vitamin E. One study — the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial — found that men getting selenium and vitamin E, alone or in combination, reduced their risk of prostate cancer by up to 60%. Selenium improves the ability of the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells in the prostate. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that also has been linked to reduced cancer risk.
Caution: People who get too much selenium may have decreased immunity. Because Brazil nuts are so high in selenium and calories (50 calories in two nuts), don’t have more than two nuts daily. If you take a multivitamin that has more than 50% of the daily value of selenium, opt for one nut.
PECANS FOR THE EYES
The most serious eye diseases, including cataracts and macular degeneration, are caused, in part, by free radicals. The antioxidants in nuts and other plant foods fight free radicals to keep the eyes healthy.
A study conducted by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that pecans are particularly rich in antioxidants. The National Eye Institute’s Age-Related Eye Diseases Study reported that patients with macular degeneration who had adequate intakes of antioxidants were 29% less likely to experience disease progression than those who got lower levels.
Bonus for heart health: The vitamin E in pecans reduces the tendency of LDL cholesterol to oxidize and stick to artery walls. Pecans also are high in phytosterols — plant compounds that are similar to the active ingredients in cholesterol-lowering margarines, such as Benecol.
WALNUTS FOR MOOD
Apart from fish and flaxseed, walnuts are one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They’re the only nut that contains alpha linolenic acid (ALA), a polyunsaturated fat that is converted to omega-3s in the body.
The omega-3s appear to help maintain healthy brain levels of serotonin, a neurochemical involved in mood. People who eat walnuts and/or two to three fish meals a week may experience a reduction in symptoms of depression.
Bonus for heart health: Omega-3s lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, another type of blood fat… increase HDL good cholesterol… inhibit blood clots in the arteries… and reduce arterial inflammation.

My turn Anna to ask for calm.
Michelle
I think even Guam should bear some of the result of the actions of its and the world governments toward beings who have not threatened us. If we feel that we are not going to have to answer for the wrongs of other countries then we are in danger of becoming complacent.
Our danger heightens our sense of staying alert to what is going on around us. That being said let me update those concerned about the tsunami threat Anna called attention to. It is over!

Guam Rattled By Tsunami Watch After Vanuantu Quake
Guam- Island residents had a bit of a scare Thursday morning when the Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a Tsunami Watch for Guam and Micronesia.
The watch was a result of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake off Vanuatu, which is 3,000 miles away from the island. The quake occurred around 8:01 am , but the Tsunami Watch ended up being canceled about 10:20 am. However, National Weather Service Meteorologist Carl McElroy said Guam wasn’t really threatened by Thursday’s event.
“I’m not a seismologist, but historically, the tsunami events that have taken place here on Guam tend to be created by earthquakes that are local, ones that are right here in this area” said McElroy.
For more distant earthquakes, he explains tsunami waves go around Guam because the deep water and sea floor help to diffuse the waves before it reaches the island. However, he says every situation is unique and cautions the community to take these watches seriously.
McElroy adds Thursday morning’s Tsunami Watch was just a precaution, but if an actually tsunami wave came to Guam from Vanuatu, it would have taken more than 5 hours to get there.

I finally got my mother to stop taking an aspirin a day. Her doctor accused me of endangering my mother’s health. I gave him several articles that supported my opinion. But he just kept repeating the mantra of the drug company that supplied him with his aspirin brand.
Here is the latest I found about an aspirin a day.
————————————-
End the once-a-day nonsense for good
If you’re taking an aspirin every day for some imagined heart benefit, I need to ask you one question.
Why?
The latest research confirms what I’ve been telling you all along: The aspirin-a-day belief is little more than a medical superstition — something repeated by many, but with no real basis in fact. You may as well hang an old horseshoe over the door — it’ll help you about as much.
The newest study really caught my attention when it was presented in August at the European Society of Cardiology Congress. It involved 3,350 healthy men and women tracked over an average of 8.2 years. Some were given that old aspirin-a-day approach, while the rest got a placebo.
The researchers found that aspirin made no difference in preventing artery or heart disease in healthy patients — but it did lead to an increased risk of stomach bleeding, one of the notorious and painful side effects of regular aspirin use.
All painkillers — even aspirin — can cause quite a bit of pain of their own when you take them regularly. Many folks use aspirin so often that they forget that this is a powerful drug with significant side effects.
I’ve already told you about some of the problems of daily aspirin use. Aspirin works by poisoning your hormonal fats. Some of these fats are bad to begin with, and that’s why you may get some short-term benefits from taking it.
But the other fats are good and necessary — and every time you take an aspirin, you poison those, too.
So those gastrointestinal problems are just the beginning when it comes to aspirin. This over-the-counter med can lead to worsening allergy and asthma conditions. And although it’s an anti-inflammatory drug, aspirin can actually have the opposite effect when used daily. Regular aspirin use can lead to swelling in the lungs, sinuses and joints.
That’s right — every time you take an aspirin to fight the swelling in your joints, you risk making the real problem worse. That’s why when you take an aspirin, you often get a little relief for a period of time, then need to take even more once it wears off — and, over time, a higher dose.
If you really want to lower you risk for artery and heart disease, start by eating right. That means avoiding carbs and other low-fat, high-sugar foods.
Then, try that real once-a-day wonder drug: a little bit of exercise.
That’s not the final word on exercise…
——————————————-
I hope some of you reading this will take the time to research this and then warn you loved ones about taking an aspirin a day.

I disagree with the Muslim faith, and do not think their religion is valuable. But I recognize the people who exercise their faith have a right to believe as they choose(including Muslims) and those people have value. I have met many honestly nice people from Muslim nations who really do not practice the Muslim faith.
But I have never seen Muslim leaders openly say that the terrorists are not faithful, these attacks are condemned by their religion, and people have the right to believe in other religions. I have yet to meet a pastor in an evangelical congregation who will not openly condemn the acts of murder(somewhere one might exist) including doctors who perform abortions. None of the pastors I have ever met support terrorist attacks.
This is the difference and until the leader of a Muslim nation openly CONDEMNS that these attacks and recognize that people can choose to believe in other religions, we cannot trust the leaders.

will never support a war on terrorism until someone defines terrorism for me. I’ve waited eight years.
I grew up thinking the IRA were terroists, but Bush never addressed them. Why was that? I personally feel individuals that go into churches and shoot doctors are terrorists, Yet I saw no movement to undermine their movements.

I found this article on the Health Care issue.
———————————
DICK MORRIS EXPLAINS THE ISSUES IN THE DEBATE OVER HEALTH CARE REFORM — FEARS VS. REALITY
When it comes to health care reform, the Obama Administration is insisting that our health care system is fundamentally broken and needs drastic change. They cite the facts that nearly 50 million people are reportedly uninsured and that health care costs are soaring ever higher. They make much of the policies of insurance companies, which often deny coverage or treatment in their efforts to improve their own bottom lines.
But Dick Morris, past adviser to former President Bill Clinton, current political analyst to FOX News Channel and coauthor of the best-selling book Catastrophe, which details many of the issues surrounding health care, has a different take. He says that the American health care system is the best in the world. “What other country has long lines of people waiting to get in for medical treatment?” he asks. He warns that the 1,000-plus-page health care reform bill from the House of Representatives and the Senate version introduced by Senator Max Baucus will severely hurt our health care system and will not end up providing coverage to those who need it. He says that we don’t have medical resources to provide care for the 30 million new patients projected to be covered by the House and Senate bills. He says that we need to expand the number of health care providers as we are expanding the number of patients. But, he warns, the cuts to Medicare reimbursement rates contemplated by Obama are likely to force more retirements among medical professionals and result in fewer doctors, constraining our resources still further. The political wrangling involved with the various proposals has led to fear, misinformation and a rising tide of skepticism that has exploded in town hall meetings across the country and even a march on Washington, DC.
I asked Morris to explain the truth behind some of the hot-button issues in order to separate myth from reality…
Issue: Health care coverage for all.
Fear: We’ll end up with socialized medicine — and how will we pay for that?
Reality: Though many are against the “public option” proposed in the House bill, the administration appears to be backing down on that and exploring other alternatives — and anyway, Morris told me, insurers have already agreed to halt the practice of denying coverage to those who are sick, have preexisting conditions or are at risk for illness. Under the new plan, everyone — including all the American citizens who are now uninsured — will be able to get insurance, through either a private or public option or, in the latest iteration, health care cooperatives that function like credit unions, owned and operated by their members. (However, notes Morris, since these would have to be set up by the government, they would end up serving as just another government agency in the interim until they could be organized and elections held.) “It’s not necessary to redo the entire medical-care system to accomplish the goal of insuring everyone,” Morris says. “A simple expansion of the Kassebaum-Kennedy Act passed in 1996, which bans discrimination against those with preexisting conditions when changing jobs, would suffice.”
One frequently contested issue concerns just who gets counted in the “50 million” people who are supposedly uninsured. Though this is the figure that the administration uses to describe how many “Americans” lack health insurance, Morris said, the truth is this estimate includes an estimated 10 million illegal immigrants, plus approximately nine million people with household incomes of more than $75,000/year but who choose not to buy health insurance — so in reality, the number of Americans who actually are in need of coverage is more like 31 million. “President Obama claims his bill would not cover illegal immigrants, and both the House bill and the Baucus proposal clearly exclude them,” Morris notes. “But that’s not the end of the story. Neither bill provides for citizenship or legal status verification before a person is given a subsidy. Indeed, the Democrats have explicitly rejected the idea of including provisions for verification. This opens the door to massive fraud.”
Issue: The vast majority of people are happy with their coverage.
Fear: Health care reform will make things worse for the many who don’t actually “need” reform.
Reality: Several polls, including those done by the Kaiser Family Foundation and FOX News, report that approximately 80% of Americans are happy with their current plan and the health care they receive. Morris adds that other polls, including one done by Rasmussen, suggest that nearly half of Americans believe the quality of their personal care under proposed changes will get worse… so, he asks, why do we need broad “reform”? Doesn’t it make more sense to just figure out a way to cover the 31 million Americans who need health care coverage?
Also, the President has said repeatedly that Americans who like their private health insurance coverage would be able to keep it. However, that’s only if they stay at their current jobs and their employer continues to offer the same private insurance coverage. The House bill sets standards for acceptable health care coverage, specifically delineating essential benefits and permissible co-payments, and allows small businesses the option of deciding which insurer their employees should use. This means that employers will shop for the cheapest coverage and may force their employees to change plans. Of course, Morris notes, they do this now, so we have limited control over our own insurance anyway.
Issue: Increased demand will lead to doctor shortages.
Fear: Covering these many millions of currently uninsured people (including illegal immigrants) places excessive demands on the health care system.
Reality: This is the biggest issue of the proposal, says Mr. Morris, because insuring more people will inevitably lead to greater need for services. Cost-effective solutions to this problem must be a part of the plan. “With no expansion in the number of doctors or nurses or even licensed alternative practitioners, there will be a shortage of doctors’ time and medical equipment,” says Morris. “Large numbers of patients will get treatment, but at the cost of quality and availability of care to each one.”
Issue: Health care reform will cost more than $1 trillion over a decade — where will the money come from?
Fear: Drastic cuts to Medicare will affect care available to the elderly.
Reality: The Senate bill provides that $500 billion of the approximately $900 billion price tag will come from cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. The administration says they really aren’t cuts but rather reductions in the program’s growth. Morris disagrees, “A cut in the projected growth of a plan is a cut in the program.” Obama also says that the cuts will not reduce patient benefits but will only eliminate “fraud and abuse.” Morris points out that administration officials have indicated that cuts in reimbursements to doctors and hospitals are likely — and that this will lead to shorter doctor visits and a reduction in the quality of care. He also notes that the bills vest the power to cut Medicare and Medicaid in a board within the executive branch, so these cuts would not be subject to legislative amendment, only to an up or down vote in their entirety which must be cast within 60 days, as was the case in the closing of military bases. It is designed, he says, “to ram through cuts without letting the elderly protest them.”
The rest of the money to pay for health care reform comes from a tax on health insurance premiums. Currently, the Baucus Bill provides that the tax will be triggered by policies with premiums above $8,000 per person — and the Congressional Budget Office estimates that 10% of all plans now fall into this category. But, Morris notes, “The $8,000 figure is not indexed for inflation, let alone for medical inflation, which usually is twice as rapid.” Therefore, says Morris, it will increasingly cover more and more families “just like the Alternative Minimum Tax, which started as a levy only on the rich.” Indeed, by the time the bill takes effect in 2013, the number of people subject to the tax would likely be far greater than the current 10% estimate. The tax in the Baucus Bill would be 35%. So a policy that now calls for $8,000 premiums would rise to $10,800. Morris calls this “a tax on the middle class.”
Issue: Helping the uninsured.
Fear: The legislation requires tens of millions of people to buy insurance even though they don’t have the money to pay for it — because it does not provide adequate subsidies to make it affordable.
Reality: The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the average person who is currently uninsured and not eligible for Medicaid will have to pay between 15% and 20% of income in premiums, deductibles and copayments under the Baucus Bill before subsidies kick in, or face very heavy punitive fines. But what about the many who now lack insurance but really only want catastrophic coverage, which is not an acceptable alternative under either bill? Only full coverage will satisfy the requirement. “This bill is funded by taxing middle-class health insurance, cutting Medicare and penalizing the uninsured and forcing them to buy policies that they may not want or need — all to get revenue to pay for the plan,” Morris points out.
Issue: Health care costs are exorbitant and must be controlled.
Fear: Cost-cutting measures will lead to lower quality of care and will eliminate choices for patients and doctors.
Reality: A key factor in the escalating costs of health care is that doctors are forced to practice “defensive medicine,” ordering every possible test to rule out every possible diagnosis in the event that the outcome is poor and the patient or family decides to file a suit. This is an issue that needs to be addressed with tort reform, says Morris. For example, he cites the recent request by the administration of the insurance industry to stop paying for C sections when they are not necessary, without providing a clear definition of what “necessary” means. As Morris points out, “OB-GYN doctors often have to perform C sections to avoid being liable for bad outcomes in natural childbirth.” Until this concern is alleviated, he says, cuts in the cost of care are just not possible.

Terrorist = the use of violence to achieve political ends. Usually on innocent people.
The IRA were targeted during the war on terror in which all the money they got from New England stopped coming and feeling their end, they conformed.
The domestic terrorists you talk about arent organized and are harder to target but the FBI looks for them anyways. That’s their job.

=====================
DICK MORRIS (CONTINUED)
Issue: Determining who gets care and who does not.
Fear: Rationing of health care will disproportionately affect the elderly and terminally ill.
Reality: In determining who will receive care and who won’t, medical professionals will be encouraged to apply the QALY system (Quality-Adjusted Life-Years), a statistical analysis that uses cost of treatment and remaining quality years of life to reach a conclusion. There is great concern that assessments such as these will diminish the importance of the remaining days and years in the lives of the elderly and, as Morris says, “condemn them to infirmity, pain and an earlier death than might otherwise be their fate.”
Issue: Reducing wasteful spending at end of life.
Fear: The plug will get pulled on grandma.
Reality: One of the most emotionally charged issues concerning health care reform has centered on the provision authorizing Medicare to pay doctors for voluntary end-of-life counseling about living wills, hospice care and other issues. This is, in theory, an excellent idea since research has shown that providing such counseling improves quality of life for both patients and family members, but, as Morris points out, in practice this may not be as successful as proponents might hope. And the big question is, does government even belong in the business of personal choice and legal advice?
Morris notes that there is an increasing focus on end-of-life care for the elderly. As we’ve written previously in Daily Health News (see November 18, 2008, issue), there is more and more evidence that quantity of care doesn’t correlate with quality of care — The Dartmouth Atlas of Care study found that regions where older patients received costlier and more aggressive care in the last few years of life did not have lower mortality. In fact, in some cases, patients even die slightly sooner, on average.
However, Morris cautions that in the hands of a cost-conscious medical administrative board within the government, this could be a slippery slope. Inevitably this will lead to situations where an individual is unable to get health care that he/she would benefit from because broad rules are being applied. Of course, the removal of the end-of-life counseling from the bill makes no difference anyway, Morris adds. “The incentive to economize and the need to dole out scarce resources will remain and will serve to curb end-of-life treatment for the elderly.”
DICK MORRIS’S BLUEPRINT FOR CHANGE
“Taken together, President Obama’s decision to cut the Medicare budget and to expand insurance coverage to 50 million new patients without any new doctors or nurses will significantly impact health care for those 80% who are satisfied with their current health care coverage… and not for the better. The high cost of medical care should not be accepted as a fact of life. Truly effective health care reform must lower costs, trim unnecessary spending and address tort reform,” says Morris. “The biggest danger is that Congress will be motivated to pass something in order to be able to say they did it — but in rushing it through will end up with a pile of compromises that do nothing to improve health care. In that case, nobody wins.”

Just so you know I have sent this to show what the right is doing to make it seem that they are concerned about health care for all when in reality they just want to stop it at all cost.

The media appears to have a blind spot for the suffering of Joe, the now chronically unemployed plumber, and an equal disregard for Josephine, that hard-working homeowner who was evicted from her foreclosed home.
According to a broad survey of print, broadcast and online media by the Pew Research Center, the media has lost interest in stories that go beyond Washington and New York — including coverage of the suffering of millions of everyday Americans living the reality of this economic crisis.

The problem with Afghanistan is the same as Iraq: The borders make no sense as a nation-state. Just as Iraq should be 3 countries, Afghanistan should be at least 2. Let the Pashtuns rule themselves, and let the northern tribes rule a different country. Then leave! What the heck is so inviolate about borders previously drawn by imperial powers anyway?

If any of you are still interested in continuing to participate in the political process here’s an excellent opportunity.

Hi, I’m the public health insurance option.
People have been saying all sorts of untrue things about me lately, so I decided it was time to stand up and set the record straight.
First off: the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I’m happy and healthy. And I’m proud to play a starring role in four of the five health reform bills currently on the table.
Second: I have a lot of friends. President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi support me—as do 77% of the American people.1 In fact, I’m feeling pretty popular.
But there is one area where I could use your help. The Senate Finance Committee is considering a “trigger” proposal that could kill me through indefinite delay.
Can you call your senator, Dianne Feinstein, and tell her that health care reform must include a real public health insurance option that’s available immediately—not a “trigger”?
Here’s where to call:
Senator Dianne Feinstein
Phone: 202-224-3841
Then click here to report your call:
http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FSCA_1&cp_id=1120&id=17313-7692656-DlKL03x&t=2
A “trigger” that would make me wait to become available is just a trap designed to kill me. As Senator Charles Schumer has pointed out, “any reasonable criteria for triggering a public plan has already been met” because insurance companies have already failed to rein in costs and expand coverage.2
Here are some other things you might not know about me:
I like candlelit dinners, overseas travel, and long walks on the beach. Whoops, sorry—wrong email.
Some people say they don’t like me because I’m too expensive, but that’s just a flat-out lie. Keeping me around will actually save money—I’d cost 10% less than the typical private plan.3
I’m the best way to keep insurance companies honest.
Like my friend Senator Jay Rockefeller has said, “Without the steady, positive influence of a public plan option in the marketplace, we will never truly solve the health care crisis in this country. Private health insurance has a long history of cutting people off or charging too much for too little.”4
Over 60 House progressives have publicly pledged to only vote for a bill that has me in it.5 So without me, health care reform doesn’t have enough votes make it through Congress.
And I’m counting on your help to make it through the Senate. Can you call Sen. Feinstein today?

Very interesting WT and very true. But for some reason there doesn’t seem to be any sort of call for a referendum. Afghanistan is a federation of tribes in which Kabul is only there to moderate and represent. Although, Karzai, as corrupt as he is is asking for something that might one day dissolve into a civil war.

you are too cruel Michelle. No man on earth would not accept a blow job from her. I am only flesh. Jesus Christ would let her blow him.
What does it matter? She will never be mine. Unless I, no I won’t go there. At least not yet. I love her.
Do you think what one can’t have in this life they can have in the next?
I really need this woman to be happy.

Relief for Dry Eyes
Steven L. Maskin, MD
Cornea and Eye Surface Center
Dry eye syndrome sounds mild, but it’s not. Patients describe the sensation as scratchy, gravelly, grainy, burning and/or stinging. In the worst cases, it causes unrelenting pain and may lead to blindness. Ironically, excessive tearing can be a symptom — the tear glands don’t produce tears until there is an overwhelming amount of dryness, and then the floodgates open.
Do-It-Yourself Remedies: These steps may relieve mild symptoms…
Clean up your diet. Cut down on caffeine, trans fats and saturated fats. Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish and in flaxseed).
Stay hydrated. Your urine should be a pale yellow.
Protect your eyes. When outdoors, wear wraparound sunglasses or gogglelike moisture-chamber glasses with rubber gaskets to seal in moisture (available at http://www.7eye.com, $125 to $250). In a car, direct air vents away from you. Don’t smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke.
Use a humidifier whenever the humidity drops below 50%.
Remember to blink. Take breaks from the TV and computer and when driving.
Try artificial tears, sold over-the-counter. Ideally, choose one without preservatives, such as the TheraTears or Refresh lines. Cost: $5 to $15.
If you wear contact lenses, switch to the daily disposable kind. If you opt for longer-lasting disposables, use preservative-free contact lens solution.
Medical Intervention: If symptoms are severe or due to LASIK vision-correction surgery (which can decrease tear secretions), the therapies above may be inadequate and may mask symptoms while the underlying problem progresses. See your eye doctor, or contact the American Academy of Ophthalmology (www.aao.org) or the American Academy of Optometry (www.aaopt.org) for a referral. Treatment options (typically covered by insurance) include…
Prescription eyedrops, such as cyclosporine (Restasis), used indefinitely to increase tear production. Cost: About $100 a month or less.
Punctal occlusion, a procedure to plug the tear drains so eyes remain moist. Cost: About $500.
Surface reconstruction. This surgery is becoming more widely available and is proving to be highly successful. Cost varies widely.
Bottom Line/Women’s Health interviewed ophthalmologist Steven L. Maskin, MD, director, Cornea and Eye Surface Center, Tampa, Florida. He is author of Reversing Dry Eye Syndrome (Yale University). Dr. Maskin discovered a cure for cancer of the eye surface and is a leader in the development of a method to reconstruct the surface of the eye.

In a chilling echo of California’s Proposition 8, marriage equality is under attack again right now.
In my home state of Maine, the people behind Prop 8 are trying to overturn our new same-sex marriage law with a ballot initiative. They’re running the same deceptive TV ads they used to scare voters in California. We can’t afford another Prop 8.
If Maine turns back this attack, it will be a historic victory with national repercussions—the first time voters approved a gay marriage law at the polls. A defeat will set back the cause of civil rights for all Americans, including many of my friends and neighbors.
I’m donating to Maine’s “No on 1″ campaign to defend marriage equality in our country. Can you join me by contributing $200 today? Click here to donate via ActBlue:
https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/noon1
The polls in Maine are too close to call. Voting by mail just started, and early voting begins next week.
To keep up with the other side’s onslaught of misleading ads, the No on 1 campaign needs to raise $164,000 more by next week. Maine is a small state, so your donation will go a long way—but if they don’t make their fundraising goals, they may not have the resources to counter the lies.
I believe we can win this campaign with some help from the rest of the country. Click here to contribute to the most important marriage equality fight of the year:

I think the girlz have gone power mad. You need to take control. Madaline must have left them unsupervised and they are going crazy with all the gadgets and power on their ship.
Do something before they destroy the planet. I’m having trouble sleeping. I live in Denmark and this is just too much. My crazy sister parades around declaring that she will be a girlz and destroy all evil men.
My mother encourages her with stories of alien abductions that she has experienced. This is a mad house. My father banned all computer use in the house., but she is using her Iphone. No one listens to me. I need drugs. lots of drugs. Way more drugs than I can afford.
Now America is shooting at the moon. What next?

Have you heard about the women who elected Don Draper as the man of the year? A guy who portrays a man in the 50′s who debases women.
White women are so stupid it is beyond imagination. The white news media is constantly asking “why do women love the cads?” interpreting “women” to mean all women when it really is only an expression of white women.
I work in an environment that is charged enough with white men getting everything. I am proud of being a successful white woman. But my law firm is still only partnered by white men.
White women when will you mature? I separate myself from you when I go to work because I don’t want to be considered the typical white woman.
Women of other races fight their cultures to get a better place in their society. Here they fight racism. White women are given a lofty place of assumed equality in our society in America. Yet, they work extra hard to prove that it is not deserved every day.
It is often embarrassing to hear the things they decide on as a group. Like picking a guy who represents a creep over President Obama. His character has even raped a woman. What does it say about what is being set as an example for young impressionable white women?
I’m afraid it says we unlike other women have not come so far. We may actually be heading backward.
Delta
October 9th, 2009 at 4:29 am
i agree with you. But did you hear Ed Rollins of the republican party criticize the committee for giving their President the Nobel Peace Prize?
How low can the republicans go? When the enemies of America are criticizing the award, how unamerican is it for our own news media to be rushing to get people on who will put this award down.
I am a white woman who recognizes the racism involved in this putting down a black man who does in nine months what most of the other 43 white men couldn’t do in 8 years.
White men hate seeing a black man out doing them. I suppose they have to hope that white women will continue to worship the character Don Draper portrays because that is all they have to offer on a whole.
My white husband is one of the exception, but even he says that most white men look disparagingly upon white women. They don’t believe she has earned her place along side him in the business or political world.
My opinion is if by “earned” they men she hasn’t raped, pillaged, murdered genocidally or racially kept down the OTWs, then they are correct. I like you Delta, am most times embarrassed by my white sisters.
They don’t seem to be able to appreciate the lofty position they hold as american white women. They are too willing to allow white men to do whatever they choose to them. From dictating how, when, or if they can have an abortion to telling us that we can’t be as close to God as a man can.
Non of the leaders of any version of christianity are women. We get to be the nuns, and such. Look at what other races do. Our black president brought women to the cabinet as his closest advisers. They are secretly and openly the real power behind the throne. He is proud of it. I am proud of him.
My husband says that for the first time he can believe what a President says. He is 37 years old and he family has be donating millions to presidential elections for generations. He was a die hard republican before Barak Obama became a serious candidate.
He switched when he noticed that every one on my side and most of the young in his family switched to Mr. Obama’s effort to become president. He has done more in nine months than any President in anyone’s memory.
Witch brings the question to everyone’s mind except our white male dominated media, “what would this country be like if we had had someone in that office other that all those 43 white men?”
You can bet the home that that question will never surface in today’s media.
Betty

i could not agree with you more. I am a doctor at Kaiser. The women I see are as different as their race. White women are so out of it on the whole that it is embarrassing to be one at times.
White men claim in the news that “women are working longer, but are happier.” Do you know anyone who has to work longer to make ends meet who is “happier?” Only white men know they can float that balloon and it will work with their women.
Tell us we are happier and we will march to the tune. Many professional white women who have to compete with white men for their share of their professional place despise the average white woman because she gives them no support and often acts to impede our progress.
Oh, and you are both correct on the jealousy of white males and the feelings of being threatened by this “extraordinary” black man. I say “extraordinary” because we don’t really know if it is “extraordinary” for black men. It may very well be an ordinary accomplishment for a black man, just extraordinary for a white man to do the same thing. It may take a few more black elected president for us to judge.

We outside of America are ecstatic that your president has won the Nobel for peace. My brother who works in america says that is not so for white america. He says the white controlled media are on a rant with “has he done enough to deserve this honor” slant.
As if Mr. Bush or most of the other 43 could have done as much in 12 years. White america is beside itself with jealousy. They can’t bring themselves to celebrate for their country because it is a black man that has received it.
They can’t acknowledge the meaning the world is giving to the new attitude of the USA to the rest of the world. The cooperation potential of the rest of the world to help them against their enemies mean nothing because it is heralded by a black man.
White america you should be ashamed.

Most here in Pakistan quietly celebrate the prize the Nobel has given to your very special President. Those who have their own agendas are against your president. They support the taliban and hate the idea that he would win the peace prize,

We here in my country continue to hear from america’s media as they begin to trivialize the award to President Obama “no disrespect intended.”
Of course they mean to disrespect him. They are making every effort to line up white men to say he doesn’t deserve it yet. Does that sound familiar.
It is the same refrain white america has used for 200 plus years, “they are not ready yet” was the mantra used to explain why blacks were not given full equality until they took it.
Now we are hearing a black president is not ready yet, for whatever acclaims he may win. Next they will be placing their race deck. How long will the world have to wait before we hear that he only received it because he is black?
Congratulations Mr. President.

Add to the list of slurs to this president winning the Nobel the refrain “the other presidents had a pretty bit of history behind them before they won it.”

Congratulations President Obama

South America can’t think of a person more deserving of an award. It is appropriate and well deserved. He is the Americas hope and the hope of the world.
In only a very short time he has changed the atmosphere of the worlds sense of cooperation. The world body of nations have been forced to see their previous actions as unacceptable. We have been put on notice that we have to take more responsibility for what is happening around the world.
Obama has forced all nations to think that they have to get involved in what is happening around the world. He did it in a few months. What can most other American presidents say they did in 8 years?
They entered the office with the world at indifference and left in most cases with the situation worst. They having contributed to that worsening.
It seems that a certain part of America can not accept the fact that their excellent leader is a non white. So it matters not what he accomplishes.
We are proud that you as a leader of a country in the Americas has won.

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize
President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama’s name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.
October 9th, 2009 at 5:46 am
The media is rolling out the ed rollins to put down this very deserving award. Why anyone would believe what rollins saids “he has been given the award now he has to go win it.”
Would rollins say that about any white man that has won a reward? He spent so much time lauding the job Reagan did for world peace. If you saw Moore’s documentary on capitalism, you would know what Reagan represented.
Congratulations Mr. President

Our President in spite of what many out here are posting has brought more good news to the world in so many ways and has shown that a “portion” of the United States has finally grown up.
Bringing about Peace comes in many forms, this President is 180 degrees from our former administration.
Many who constantly find fault in our President are doing so for personal reasons, I’d say their views on him are “Jaded” and”Colored” for the most part.
If this President brought home all of our troops we would then hear, “See what has now done, he going to put all of the companies that make “War Toys” out of business.

The TV show Mad Men, a story of a ad executive in the 60′s who is a cad. I think he is a closet homosexual. He is played by Don Draper.
The women hosts are saying that sometimes successful women want to be told what to do. What kind of shit is that? White women are anchors who have no loyalty to women. They will repeat whatever line white men give them to say to their audiences.

Mother you forgot to add that President Obama is the first sitting president to win the award since 1919 and it took that president two terms to get it.
Jealousy abounds. Cheney is going crazy. And the rest of the republicans are going berserk. White america is scrambling to minimize the accomplishment, white men are desperate to find a legitimate and/or acceptable way to cast aspersions on the committee who awarded the prize.
The Norwegians are beholden to no one. They are independent as to who they make their awards to. That won’t matter though white males in america will do all they can to impugn this award.
Why can’t all Americans celebrate only the third time a sitting President has won the award? Be proud for America regardless the color of the winner.
Love you mother

I found this on the web.
——————
Obesity is contagious
If you’d like a glimpse into your child’s future, you don’t need a magic mirror. You just need to see who he or she is eating with.
It turns out those eating buddies play a direct role in how much your kids munch — and they’re not exactly good influences.
I’m already greatly concerned by the eating habits of our children. American kids in general suffer from some pretty serious nutritional deficiencies, and a study in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that those bad habits are contagious.
It found that children with friends who eat too much are likely to do the same.
While it’s nice to know that your kids are learning to share, bad eating habits are the one thing you don’t want your child picking up from friends.
Researchers allowed 130 kids between the ages of 9 and 15 to eat as much as they wanted while in certain scenarios, with friends and strangers of different weights. They found that kids ate more when with friends, which makes sense. But they also found that kids ate even more — a lot more — when with overweight friends.
And the worst match-up of all was an overweight kid with an overweight friend. These kids were likely to eat up to 300 calories more when with each other than they would with a thin friend.
While I don’t like to take a fatalistic approach when it comes to health, your weight IS within your control — if you’re willing to discipline yourself. The numbers don’t lie. I remember a Harvard study from 2007 that found that adults are 57 percent more likely to become obese if a friend does. Our odds of getting fat also go up by 40 percent if a sibling becomes obese, and 37 percent if a spouse does.
So if your pack of friends is starting to resemble cows rather than wolves, maybe it’s in your interest to stray from the herd a bit — or at least keep a closer eye on your waistline and take charge of your eating habits.
And when it comes to your kids, you’re better off trying to take charge of their eating habits rather than choosing their friends for them. There’s one simple way to do that: Start making their lunches for them.
Sure, they might issue the standard complaints at first. But if you involve them, let them help plan and even make those healthy lunches, your kids could soon have meals that everyone at the lunch table will envy.

How can American society tolerate 39,252 deaths associated with automobile collisions in 2005, or 438,000 smoking related deaths in 2008, both instances where we “killed ourselves,” and yet devote more resources and political energy to fighting terrorists, who have killed far fewer US citizens? There is a reason which reflects much about us.
