For The Good Of ALL

Posted by Michelle Moquin on December 2nd, 2009

So, I don’t know if any of you got on the Activist conference call yesterday that I posted in regards to the Congo Gold and the Enough Project. Doug tried (thank you), and I tried but evidently the number was incorrect. In case you figured it out,  ( I didn’t) although now that I think about it, duh – it was pretty obvious.  The 887 number should have been listed as 877 – not my typo – theirs. I was informed by an e-mail that I discovered way after the event:

December 1, 2009

ACTIVIST CALL ON NOW – NEW ACCESS DETAILS

Our apologies to all activists hoping to join our activist call. The correct dial-in information for the “Congo’s Conflict Minerals” call is below:

Toll-Free Dial-in #: ( 877 ) 254 – 9825

Conference ID #: 44050208

I have to say that when one is preparing to do something, and one is reaching out to the general public for help, it would behoove the organization to make sure that their information is noted correctly. Bummer. I just wonder how many people called and gave up, missing on the opportunity to learn and help. I know I did.

I was in the middle of working on some financial matters, so of course after a few tries, I threw in the towel and proceeded to focus on my own work. As perhaps many others did. In these times where people have many other things to do….many other priorities, if what we need isn’t available, we move on to what is available, where we can make a difference. Do you know what I mean? I hope that for their sake and the sake of the people in Congo, the conference call was successful despite the phone typo. I’ll check out their website later and see if they posted a podcast of the conference, as I am still interested in how to help further; just frustrated that I could not be a part of it at the time. Readers: Were you able to you tune in?

Hallunta, Marinda, and Cherika: It is always so difficult to read comments from women such as yourselves. Whenever I am in the midst of my own struggles, I am always reminded that women around the world suffer in ways that I will never experience. It allows me to step back and take the attention off of myself, and take more steps forward help those that need it. My biggest struggle and frustration is feeling that where I am right now doesn’t allow me to do enough.

Evelyn: I cry too at night. The plight of women disturbs me so much that there are days where I just want to gather all of the women from here that want to leave, transport them to my ship, and leave myself, and let the men deal with what they have created. But then, I am reminded of myself and my purpose, of why I am here and what impact and influence I have here.

I have to look past my own needs and have hope that things are moving in the right direction for ALL.  Which brings me to Obama’s Speech Last night at West Point announcing that he is sending 30,000 more troops into Afghanistan. Am I happy about this? No. Do I wish the war and violence would end? Yes, who wouldn’t? Do I think he is doing what he thinks is best? I believe he knows much more than we’ll ever know, and he’s making his decision based on so much more than we’ll ever be privy too. And knowing Obama, his character, his integrity, his fairness and desire for the world to be good for ALL, I trust his decision. I have to remain hopeful, for hope is sometimes all that I have.

Readers: I am sure that many of you have so much to say about this matter. Do what you do. Blog me.

Floyd: Loved the joke. Thank you for speaking up for women and continuing to write your representatives.  I am grateful.

Linda: I have run out of time this morning – I am aware of Tiger’s infidelities but have had not much time to read up on the subject. If and when I do, I’ll give you my two.

Peace out.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

You are so right. The story you mentioned was a situation caused by two opposing political clans fighting for political dominance. But the first chance men got to turn the dispute into an excuse to rape women they took it.

Women victims in massacre in Philippines were mutilated
    By Carlos H. Conde

    New York Times / November 28, 2009

DAVAO CITY, the Philippines – Most of the 22 women among the 57 people massacred Monday in the southern Philippines were sexually mutilated, the authorities said yesterday, adding grim details to the catalog of horrors that has already emerged.

“Even the private parts of the women were shot at,’’ the justice secretary, Agnes Devanadera, said on national television. “It was horrible. It was not done to just one. It was done practically to all the women.’’
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said it appeared that 30 journalists and their assistants had been killed. They were killed to eliminate witnesses, investigators said. About a dozen victims were the relatives, lawyers, or supporters of Esmael Mangudadatu, a local politician whose determination to challenge the entrenched Ampatuan clan in a gubernatorial election touched off the violence.
    ——————————

I am disgusted. We women here know that the men will do nothing to punish those men for what they did to the women. I wish that men who wish to kill each other would do it without involving the women and children.

  2. Q&A Says:

Q: My child is in college. Can I help him develop a credit rating by authorizing him to use my credit card?

A: An “authorized user” of your credit card can make charges on it but is not legally liable for paying them off.

The card owner’s payment history on the card normally appears on an authorized user’s credit reports, so if the owner has an excellent payment record and a low balance, it can help an authorized user, such as a college student who is new to credit cards, develop a credit score.

Fair Isaac Corp., creator of the widely used FICO score, announced that it would end this practice, known as piggybacking, but changed its mind. Its new scoring program, FICO 08, will continue to recognize authorized-user accounts.

Adding an authorized user to your credit card will not affect your credit rating by itself — but be aware that you will be responsible for charges made by the authorized user on your card. The size of those charges and your record of paying them will affect your credit rating.
Caution: Don’t add someone who has a poor credit rating to your card as an authorized user to improve that person’s credit rating. Many agencies consider that unethical.

Thanks for that. Keep hope alive.

Michelle I think your blog should hear the story of how cruel men can be. It should also be pointed out that their cult religion that is supposed to “protect” women from violence is a lie. Men use the aura of protection to terrorize women into accepting their cult.
Here is the story as reported by the TIMES.
    ———————————————————-
He knew that powerful and ruthless people wanted him dead and that he was risking everything by standing for election — but to one practical challenge at least, Ismael Mangudadatu thought he had a solution.
If he went in person to register as a candidate he would be inviting an attack by his enemies — the Ampatuan clan who have a near-monopoly on elected posts in the region. Instead, after consultation with his family and advisers, Mr Mangudadatu decided to send his wife and two sisters.
The local police refused to provide an escort and the Philippines Army declined a request for protection. But how much harm could befall a group of women? For good measure, the two family lawyers who were women and Mr Mangudadatu’s aunt — who was pregnant, like one of his sisters — went along for the ride with other supporters and relatives.
As a further safeguard, 27 journalists were invited. “Under our tradition, Muslim women are respected,” Mr Mangudadatu said. “They should not be harmed, just like innocent children and the elders. They will not harm us if journalists are watching.”

At 9.30am on Monday six minibuses began the drive from the town of Buluan to the provincial capital of Shariff Aguak. “This is women power in action,” Eden, Mr Mangudadatu’s sister, was heard to say. “Let’s help our men chart a better future for the province.”
Within hours, she and her companions were dead.
They had been bound, macheted, shot and buried in a mass grave. It is believed that some were raped.
Political killings have been a part of life for centuries in the Philippines, and the southern island of Mindanao is the most violent of all.
The attack, in which 57 people were killed, has raised questions about the relationship between the gangster clans such as the Ampatuan family and the highest levels of the Philippines metropolitan elite.
Yesterday Andal Ampatuan Jr, the son of one of the most powerful men in Mindanao, was charged with seven counts of murder. “He was the one who gave the instructions,” Agnes Devanadera, the Justice Minister, said. “He was among those … who killed the victims.”
Until they were expelled this week, Mr Ampatuan and his father were important members of the ruling party of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the President. Her Government has also moved against members of its security forces suspected of being complicit in the violence.
According to the national police chief, Jesus Verzosa, six senior officers, including the provincial chief and his deputy, twenty officers of the Ampatuan police station and about four hunded members of a militia loyal to the Ampatuan family are in custody.
Many Filipinos remain sceptical about the prospects for improvement. “He [Ampatuan Jr] can be a sacrificial mouse to spare the leopards behind the crime,” one Maguindanao man told The Times. “The most powerful people among the Ampatuans are still in government.”
Three journalists survived the attack because they stopped at their hotel when the convoy was setting out. “The lady at the front desk told us that a motorcycle-riding man armed with a pistol came to ask for the names of journalists who checked in at the hotel,” said Aquiles Zonio, of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
They tried calling colleagues, but the hold-up had already taken place. The convoy was stopped about an hour into its journey, near the town that bears the Ampatuan family name. Some victims were able to send texts reporting that they had been stopped by about a hundred armed men.
Police Chief Superintendent Felicisimo Khu said: “Twenty-four corpses were all killed by a firing squad. They were buried in six layers. Every layer is covered with earth, making it more difficult for the retrieval operations. I have asked myself why one of them has no underwear.”
Ms Devanadera said: “Even the private parts of the women were shot at. It was done practically to all the women. All the women had their zippers undone. The pants of some were pulled down. We have yet to determine whether they were raped.”
According to Mr Khu, the gunmen intercepted two vehicles with six people who happened to be travelling on the same road at the same time, and killed them too. “Some sustained multiple gunshot wounds — as many as eight,” said Benito Molina, a forensic examiner at the scene. “To judge from the blood, some of the corpses may have been buried while still alive.”
Cooking pots belonging to the killers were found at the scene and they had taken with them a mechanical digger bearing the name of the local government. Its engine was still running when soldiers arrived.
The brutality appears to have backfired on the Ampatuan clan: the intensity of public anger will ensure that no politician in Manila will court their friendship publicly in the election in May.
It is little compensation for the loss of his family, but Mr Mangudadatu’s election prospects have been strengthened. “Only death can stop me from running,” he said yesterday when he filed his candidature for the regional governorship of Maguindanao, which is held by the brother of Mr Ampatuan Jr. “This symbolises our freedom. I hope this will be the start of our liberation.”
The scale of the massacre may be unique, but its story — of violence, clans and corruption — is repeated across the Philippines.
Father Eduardo Vasquez, a priest in Shariff Aguak, said: “If powerful and equally armed families like the Mangudadatus were killed in such a barbaric manner, how much more for the ordinary civilians who have already been traumatised by the war?”
    Clan power
Andal Ampatuan Sr has four wives and thirty children. He has a private army of several hundred, permitted under a presidential executive order
His extended family dominates the region’s politics. One son, Zaldy, is governor of the Muslim Mindanao
The provincial capital Maganoy was renamed Shariff Aguak after Mr Ampatuan’s late father One of his sons and a nephew are its mayor and vice-mayor.
    ====================================
As you can see men along the way deserted the needs of these women to be safe from the evil of men. They were forced to accept their fate. Now the same men who put them in danger in the first place are trying to use their deaths as political fodder for their own purposes. They could care less about what the victims had to suffer.

There seems to be no end to the things men will do to women when given the opportunity.

Michelle, I found this information about medications for anemia. It is important to me because I have a child that suffers from it. I thought that it might benefit someone else also.
    ——————————
New dangers linked to anemia meds

If you or anyone you care about takes meds for anemia, pay close attention – because the news on these things keeps getting worse.

A new study – the largest of its kind – found that the anemia drug Aranesp may significantly increase the risk of stroke in diabetics who suffer from kidney problems.

Ironic, since the goal of the study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, was to find out if this med could prevent those strokes, as well as heart disease and heart attacks.

The researchers also found that patients on the drug noticed only a slight improvement in fatigue, one of the hallmarks of anemia. With benefits like that, who needs side effects?

But the most remarkable thing about this study isn’t the results… it’s the fact that it was sponsored by Amgen, the drug’s maker. The study’s leader has consulted for the company, and two of its authors actually work for it.

It must have seemed like a safe bet at the time.

Bravo to this team for being unafraid to bite the hand that’s feeding it. The drug maker, for its part, says it will update the label to reflect this new risk.

That’s nothing new for them. For two years now, Amgen has had to put stronger and stronger warnings on the labels of three anemia drugs. It makes you think that a skull and crossbones might be better at this point.

If you’re anemic, go over your alternatives with your doctor. It’s entirely possible that careful management of your diet and nutrition can help reduce your need for meds – or even allow you to skip the pills altogether.

Don’t be tempted by an iron supplement as a quick solution – you’ll want to get your iron largely from natural dietary sources, including leafy green vegetables and red meat. Beef and chicken livers also have plenty of iron, along with pork, chicken and fish.

But all that iron in your food won’t help much if you’re not getting enough vitamin C. Believe it or not, C is just as important here because it helps your body to absorb all that dietary iron.

The B vitamins – including folic acid – and magnesium may also help your body fight off anemia.

As always, bring your doctor in on this one, because it’s difficult to find the right amounts and combinations on your own… and to know when its safe to consider getting off these meds before they do you some real harm.

Cash-Poor Japan Airlines Could Lose Another $500M On New Alliance Bid

    By John Dela Rosa

GUAM – Even as Continental Airlines is moving forward with its new STAR Alliance partnerships, a move that is anticipated to strengthen Continental’s global reach and bottom line, Japan Airlines is fighting a similar battle to do the same.

JAL is currently a member of the OneWorld Alliance with American Airlines and British Airways. However, JAL has been in discussions with Delta Airlines to join Delta and Air France – KLM in the SkyTeam alliance.

American Airlines has taken the fight public, saying that JAL could stand to risk up to $500 million in revenues as it transitions to a new partnership. And that could put ailing JAL in an even more precarious financial position.

Continental, JAL and Delta all fly out of Guam International.

Classic Comedies to Make You Laugh Out Loud

    Lou Sabini

I can think of no better way to escape the trials of everyday life than by enjoying the delightful world of screwball comedies made during the “Golden Age of Hollywood.” All are available on DVD or can be viewed on the Turner Classic Movies cable channel…
Bombshell (1933). This wild satire was directed by Victor Fleming, who would go on to make Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939 releases). It features the all-but-forgotten Lee Tracy, cast as an obnoxious Hollywood press agent who will write anything about a platinum blonde sex-siren movie star (Jean Harlow), no matter how scandalous it may be, as long as it makes front-page headlines.

It Happened One Night (1934). The first film to win the five major Academy Awards (picture, actor, actress, director, screenplay), it stars Clark Gable as a reporter who sets out to cover the story of a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert). A timeless classic from Frank Capra.

The Thin Man (1934). This mystery/comedy spawned five superb sequels starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, who own a wire-haired terrier named Asta. It was shot in only 12 days (some sources say 16) by W.S. “One-Take Woody” Van Dyke.

Libeled Lady (1936). Only MGM, which boasted it had “more stars than there are in the heavens,” could deliver this cast, starring William Powell, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy and Jean Harlow. Powell is hired by newspaperman Tracy to keep rich heiress Loy from suing the newspaper for libel after a scandalous story about her is printed by accident. Add Harlow to the proceedings, and the results are hilarious.

Topper (1937). Roland Young stars as henpecked husband Cosmo Topper in this comedy from Hal Roach Studios, which was responsible for The Little Rascals/Our Gang and Laurel and Hardy. Cary Grant and Constance Bennett play the ghostly Kerbys, who, before they can enter the “Pearly Gates” of the beyond, have to perform a good deed. They decide to free Topper of his inhibitions.

My Man Godfrey (1936). Carole Lombard and William Powell (who remained great friends after they divorced in 1933) co-star in this zany comedy about a family of eccentric millionaires who hire a hobo to work as their butler. Through a series of frenzied mishaps, their daughter falls for the hobo, not realizing that he is, in reality, a Boston blueblood. The wonderful supporting cast includes Eugene Pallette, Alice Brady and Mischa Auer. Directed by Gregory La Cava.

Midnight (1939). Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche (on loan to Paramount from Twentieth Century Fox) star in this madcap comedy. The screenplay was written by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett. Penniless Colbert masquerades as a countess and gets involved in a marital triangle. John Barrymore steals the picture.

Sullivan’s Travels (1941). One of my favorite films of all time, this brilliant comedy from writer/director Preston Sturges is about a movie comedy producer who sets out to make a “good deep-dished drama” called O Brother, Where Art Thou? Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake star.

Bottom Line/Personal interviewed Lou Sabini, a noted film historian, writer and archivist currently conducting film screenings throughout Connecticut and New York. He is writing a book about Hollywood’s “forgotten” films that are worthy of rediscovery.

In whatever form you eat them (frozen cherries are a favorite snack at my house), cherries are a good choice. New research from the University of Michigan shows that compounds in cherries may be protective against the kind of inflammation associated with heart disease and diabetes. Animal research indicates those same cherry compounds may lower both cholesterol and triglycerides.

    CHERRY-PICKING THE HEALTH BENEFITS

I spoke with Steven F. Bolling, MD, professor in the department of cardiac surgery at the University of Michigan, who told me about the impressive study results. His research team fed two groups of rats diets that were identical but for one factor — one group received some of their calories from a powdered dried extract of tart cherries.

According to Dr. Bolling, all inflammatory markers decreased significantly in the cherry-fed rats, including a 40% reduction in TNF-alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha) and a 31% reduction in IL-6 (Interluken-6). Both are markers of inflammation, which is a factor in many diseases and conditions, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and even cancer. That makes this a significant finding. The rats that ate cherry powder also had significantly lower levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Dr. Bolling believes the potent health benefits are from the anthocyanins, which are what give cherries their color, adding that the high levels of antioxidants in the cherries may also play a role. He cautions, however, that it’s likely not a single active compound that should get the credit: “Nature put all these components together in the fruit and designed them to work together.”

Interestingly, the obese rats that ate the cherries showed reduced fat accumulation around the middle, which (in both rats and people) has been linked to the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Earlier studies have found that lean rats benefited from cherry powder — when fed cherries, those prone to high blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance and high cholesterol stored less fat in the liver and had better blood sugar measures.

I asked Dr. Bolling how many cherries an adult would have to eat to achieve this level of benefit. “It’s hard to make a perfect extrapolation to a 150-pound human from a rat that weighs a few ounces,” he said, “but our best guess is that about a cup and a half of cherries each day, fresh or frozen, can offer a real potential upside as far as reducing inflammation.” Cherry juice concentrate is another choice.

Ma Qin, mmm, thank you, it is bc of you and the ‘au contraire’ : ) comment above that I went back and saw that others have commented addressing me (thank you) – so Reba, janet, Delaney (hahaha…I will give it a rest, thanks for the kick in the ahs), So, Barbara, I see I do make some points here about health and more importantly, (in my opinion, a nice body is nice but how you feel about yourself inwardly is equally important, I’ve met beauties that aren’t clear of their worth) the emotional health of women.

On that note, so glad you’re all sticking with the program, it’s a way of life after a while, you can read all the health info articles it only backs up my two cents, you’re getting cardio, healthy eating and while it blows me away that people cannot wrap their minds around the ‘you are what you eat’ and ‘my body is my temple’ I will keep inserting baby steps at anyone who will listen : ) bc it’s all very much controlled by how we think of ourselves and our lives…releasing the need for attention/approval from everyone/anyone is a good start…more on this later, I have a half hour before I head to a comedy show fundraiser for my kids’ school – can’t wait : ) I love laughing…

Ken, yes I recall Anonz making an SS statement re: Mormons, thanks for refreshing my memory, not sure if this was their doing but whether it was a white wannabe couple or an OTW couple, I think the SS showed their allegiance and it ain’t to President Obama.

Just curious if anyone caught the under the radar story about Fort Knox’s gold bars being gold-plated Tungsten and lead bars? Oh, oops…and now what…we just keep printing more paper, Mr Bernanke, did you want to melt some lead into that also?? wtf…?

I heard the following on the radio today…Indo man re: polygamy, ‘yes it’s hard for women to get used to but it works in my household well for me’ oof, his 4 wives should just serve up his small balls for lunch and plan the rest of their hubbyless lives together, also heard…Lima, Peru, police found headless corpses amd jars of the bodies’ fat for sale to plastic surgeons black market style for face fillers for women, oh I almost had to pull over the gag reflex was that bad…who are these paople?

uh, Linda, you bagged on Tiger and you also said ‘I’d fuck him’ – I’m curious, would you fuck him, married or only if he was single? It is funny to me when women say that…maybe he was and is enthralled with his wife but someone who thinks IFH (the hostess with a big name atty) thought the same thing, I’m not saying he’s innocent in the matter but come on now. Here’s my theory on women hitting on men who are with other women (and looking mighty happy to be there) – they want that (the relationship/good looking man) and so if it appears that if your fine looking man is happy with you, he must be good at relationships – uh, yes, perhaps, but he’s also happy where he is, why not go fuck someone who might want to see you/be with you in and out of bed? My other theory, men like marriage bc it ensures that their woman isn’t sharing but it’s ok if he is, though this may not be a conscious thought at the time of the vows ; ) I’m not sure monogamy is for everyone, unfortunately the people (women/men) who agree with that statement are usually married to people who feel the opposite. I happen to dig exploring passionate and intimate monogamy but hey, to each her/his own, some people don’t like to get too too close, physically or otherwise…

    Billy, I love your quips!

Wow, gotta go NOW, Luv, Zen Lill – again, a thanks to the women here at MM blog – I love you all and for those in dire circumstances, now you know that we women in the Western world think about you a lot and whenever I have the opportunity I spout on about it, recently – a male who received an ZL ass kicking (re: his view of women) told me that he’d never had his head handed to him with such wording (or did he say, ripped a new asshole, can’t remember), he asked if I sit around all day thinking of clever ways to insert my two, I said nah, it just – happens!

I was gong to comment on the reason the “crash” occurred, but your comment about the gold in Ft Knox needs to be illuminated. I would not want you to be ripped off.

There is a huge scheme being played out by us very wealthy guys on the little people. It goes like this:

Shortly after we took the world for trillions, an employee of one of our group came up with a way to make a “second” huge killing. The Idea was to scare the same people we ripped off for trillions into investing what we didn’t get in GOLD.

Some thing that had to be done or begun before the mark is fleeced is:

    1. We have begun to corner the market’s gold supply.
    2. We have begun to inflate the value of gold as we did real estate.
    3. We have begun to show that other investment options are shaky at best.
    a. We keep news stories about failing investments on the front pages of every major news medium in the world.
    b. We make up horror stories, i.e. the possible failure of Dubai to pay back their loans.
    4. We have begun to float stories in major industrial countries about the gold holdings of those countries so as to imply they can not back up their currencies. Most will never understand that gold is valueless in that respect among countries today.
    a. Which brings me to your story about the gold in Ft Knox being fake. It is one of many plants that you will hear designed to make the purchase of gold more attractive.
    b. Sit back and relax we have many more that will come out.
    5. As soon as we have driven Gold to $2,000 an ounce, we will let the air out of the suckers balloon and they will be left with gold worth about $350 an ounce. Don’t you just love these suckers?

I would cry for them except they make up the majority of people who would deny others health care and other services because they can afford to pay for theirs. Greed and insensitivity to the needs of their fellow members of the universe make them the easy marks they are. If I don’t fleece them, others will.

I do it with a certain “Robin Hood” gratification. I see it as depriving them of the comfort that allows them to feel less about the needs of others. Sure I get richer in the process, but then my motto is “If anyone should have all the money and power, Let It Be Me.” Who else could I trust?

You are always in my thoughts. I read as often as I can for your gems. The delivery is as sexy, informative, thought provoking and provocative as when I first bit into that apple. Ah, but now, I find myself wanting the tree or at least an exclusive lease of the garden.

Guam – Guam war claims was the focus during today’s hearing with the House Armed Services Committee in the nation’s capitol. Committee Chairman Ike Skelton recognized the importance of ensuring survivors of the World War II occupation of Guam are well compensated, as he pointed out Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo’s efforts to get the legislation moving forward.
The Guam War Claims legislation passed the House twice, but failed to make this fiscal year’s final National Defense Authorization Act after the Senate had some objections to the measure.
Skelton hoped to address the areas that were objected, but not without updated information that would help have the Guam war claims considered in the future. While Skelton also hoped the existing United States obligation on the matter is addressed, discussions also touched on how the Guam war claims matter might impact the marine relocation from Okinawa to Guam.
Also in attendance at today’s hearing was Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs Tony Babauta, former Guam War Claims Review Commission chairman Mauricio Tamargo, Guam senators Ben Pangelinan and Frank Blas Jr., and WWII survivor Tom Barcinas.

Now in its 12th year, the 5 km Jingle Bell Run of Guam will be held on Saturday. It will start and end at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa.

The Jingle Bell Run is Guam’s premier family oriented fun race, and is held annually. Residents and visitors of all ages turn out in great numbers to run, walk, share good cheer, and enjoy a wide variety of entertainment along the way.

Last year, it saw more than 1,700 participants in festive costumes and tiny bells that rang out with the sounds of Christmas. Organizers hope to make this year’s run the best one yet.

Located in the western Pacific, Guam is the closest US destination from China, and is known for its crystal clear water, blue skies and beaches fronted by coconut fronds. There are daily flights from Shanghai via Tokyo, Seoul, or Manila, that reach Guam in six hours.

Guam is far closer to China than it is to any part of the USA. We would be a better partner. Think about China we are a merging world super power.

  26. Health Info Says:

EXCESS FOLIC ACID MAY RAISE CANCER RISK

Where a little may be good, a lot may be hazardous… such may be the case with folate, and its synthetic form folic acid, the B vitamin that helps protect the nervous system and prevent anemia. For years now, the US government (along with Canada and Chile) has required that most breads, flours, cornmeal, rice and some other grains be fortified with folic acid as a way to reduce birth defects known to be caused by folate deficiency.

It’s working — incidence of neural tube birth defects has been reduced by as much as 50% in these countries, but at the same time, there has been another, totally unexpected development. All three countries have also seen rates of colorectal cancer rise, an abrupt reversal after years of decline — with the increase estimated at an additional four to six cases of colorectal cancer per 100,000 people. Adding to that concern were the results of a large clinical trial published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2007 concerning folic acid supplementation and colon cancer. The participants, all of whom had previously had colon polyps, were divided into two groups — one group took 1,000 mcg daily (this is considered the uppermost safe limit and exceeds the daily recommended intake, which is 400 mcg) of folic acid and the other a placebo. After seven years, the study found that those taking supplemental folic acid were more likely to have multiple polyps, and at higher risk, than those who didn’t take it. Even more troubling: A follow-up study of this same group found that after 10 or 11 years, those supplementing with folic acid had a three-fold increase in prostate cancer compared with the group on placebo.

    TRADING ONE PROBLEM FOR ANOTHER?

Joel Mason, MD, director of the Vitamins and Carcinogenesis Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, is author of a recent report on this topic in Nutrition Reviews. He told me the report generated controversy because folate fortification has so effectively reduced birth defects — but his intent, however, was not to be “anti-fortification,” but rather to generate dialogue about a potential risk for one group of people in spite of the clear benefits for another at a time when many countries are considering fortification.

Paradoxically, there is sound evidence that folate, which has a pivotal role in DNA synthesis, protects against colorectal cancer. Dr. Mason speculated that perhaps its very function of helping create DNA for new cells means that when ingested in large quantities, folate stimulates the growth of existing cancerous or precancerous cells that would otherwise remain stable. Another possibility relates to the fact that folic acid, rather than folate itself, is used to fortify foods because it is cheaper and also more stable. The body must convert folic acid into folate, he says, and ingesting an excessive amount of folic acid may overwhelm the conversion system, leaving a reservoir of synthetic folate that could have detrimental effects. Current research is exploring whether folic acid itself is cancer-promoting, but there’s little evidence of this Dr. Mason said, so he believes it’s more likely related to excessive intake of the vitamin, regardless of its form.

    A FOLIC ACID MEASURE

In no way does this diminish the importance of an abundance of folate, says Dr. Mason, describing it as “healthful and in no way harmful.” Dietary folate is available in a variety of foods, including dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, citrus fruits and berries.

And folic acid, for the most part, also is healthful and relatively few people are at risk for getting too much. Dr. Mason says supplementation adds a “fairly modest amount” to typical intake, about 100 mcg to 200 mcg per day. He noted that the situation only gets worrisome for those who routinely exceed 1 mg a day (1,000 mcg) of folic acid through supplementation in a variety of forms. This would describe a person who takes a multivitamin (400 mcg of folic acid), a B complex (another 400 mcg), and then eats fortified breakfast cereal (typically containing 100 to 400 mcg). It’s still morning and we already are at the ceiling of 1,000 mcg folic acid — but then for lunch there is a sandwich with fortified bread (50 to 120 mcg for two slices), maybe a pasta dinner (another 100 to 200 mcg) and the total is nearly 1,400 mcg, clearly topping the upper limit of safety. For those who snack on vitamin-packed energy bars and sip vitamin-infused water all day, the folic acid intake goes even higher.

There isn’t enough data yet to make an absolute statement about folic acid intake, but the current recommendation regarding the uppermost safe intake level (1,000 mcg/day) continues to be an excellent guideline, Dr. Mason said. Vitamin labels clearly identify how much folic acid they contain, but it’s harder to figure out how much is in fortified foods. The law says that all wheat flour, rice and several other uncooked cereal grains labeled as “fortified” must have added folic acid… but there are a few nonfortified examples of these foods on the market. You can look for these, but it might be easier to just be aware of how much folic acid you are ingesting in vitamin supplements, because these appear to be the major source of excessive intake.
