What Do Gov. Jan Brewer And Private Prisons Have In Common?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on September 3rd, 2010

Bookmark and Share

I don’t know about you but I am tired of Gov. Jan Brewer, the hand behind the signing of Arizona’s draconian Immigration Law SB1070. It’s been in the news for the past few months about Brewer and her lobbyist ties to private prisons, one specifically, Corrections Corporation Of America (CCA).

Although crime in Arizona is way down, “terrorist”, “kidnapping”, “beheading”, “murder” “drug cartel” and “extortion” are the words widely used to induce fear in the public. Even illegal border crossing is down 49% since 2004.(!) And according to Rachel Maddow’s findings, it is down 67% since 2000.

Wha’at? Illegal border crossing is down and the Immigration Law was just passed? If that law being passed isn’t blatant racism hiding beneath the coat of fear, I don’t know what is.  If anyone took into consideration the above stats this law would never have even been passed let alone broached. Blatant racism, that’s all it is. People can say they are afraid, but c’mon not many want to admit they are racist.

And you can thank the one pushing this kind of propaganda paranoia to the public: Jan Brewer.

I found a video of KPHO News out of Phoenix, the station who reported these interesting findings about Brewer and her lobbyist ties. And as expected, when they confronted Brewer, she opted for the fifth. No surprise there.

Brewer has an agenda in mind, and she’s not alone. Her rhetoric on border security  may be damaging Arizona’s tourism industry for the benefit of CCA. Why? Well, check this out: Brewer’s top advisors, Paul Senseman and Chuck Coughlin have connections to CCA. CCA holds the federal contract to house detained immigrants…to a tune of 11 million dollars every month and could grow exponentially because of the Immigration Law.

Brewer’s campaign staff and governing staff are overrun with lobbyists, particularly those with direct ties to prison privatization. Brewer’s lobbyists have been leaders in the efforts to privatize Arizona’s prison system at the expense of public safety. Here’s a quick Who’s Who:

Campaign Manager Chuck Coughlin is a registered lobbyist and president of HighGround Public Affairs Consultants, which has represented Corrections Corporation of America.
Campaign Spokesman Doug Cole is a registered lobbyist for HighGround Public Affairs Consultants.
Governor’s Office Chief of Staff Eileen Klein was a registered lobbyist.
Governor’s Office Communications Director Paul Senseman was a registered lobbyist.
Governor’s Office Deputy Communications Director Mark Genrich is a registered lobbyist.
Governor’s Office Deputy Chief of Staff Richard Bark was a registered lobbyist.
Governor’s Office Policy Adviser Kevin Kinsall was a registered lobbyist.

Can you say “Ka- ching”? I’ll leave it at that.  Watch the video and get all the dirt.

Readers: And now the latest thanks to Maddow’s report Wednesday night: The Brewer campaign is trying to punish KPHO TV by withdrawing her campaign ads from the station.

KPHO TV is a CBS affiliate; in the largest city in Arizona: Phoenix. Maddow states: “This is political retaliation against journalism. This is news.” Yep, they’re advertising on the other two networks but decided to stop advertising on KPHO. Gee, do ya think it’s because KPHO has been digging, reporting and raising questions about Brewer’s lobbyist ties to CCA for the past few months?

Hmm…election time is near – Now who’s the one in fear? Fear of exposure, that is. Hint: I mentioned I was tired of her. :)

If you want to hear more of Maddow’s comments in regards to Brewer and KPHO TV click here for Wednesday night’s report. Begin the video at 3:30.

Anna Of Guam: The circumstances are so unfortunate. I understand that the brown tree snake is damaging your ecosystem, but I hate to see an innocent snake being killed, when the species should never have been on the island in the first place, and is just living instinctually. What else can be done other than baiting the snakes with mice? Hafa Adai.

Lea: That is par for the course for the GOP. “Civility” shows up rarely in the GOP and if they aren’t going to be civil with their own kind, don’t count on it when it comes to them facing off with the Dems, or anyone else in the way of their agenda. As always, anyone up against the GOP has their work cut out for them.

Elenor: You got that right. It is no surprise that the word “Integrity” was in the top 10 of the most looked up words in the dictionary in 2009.

LaDesta: Interesting article. I really bothers me when society, and religion is part of society, puts limits on my beliefs and how I choose to practice what ever beliefs I have. Who says we have to stick with one religion? Can we not see the good in different religions or follow the beliefs as we see fit? Does God, or Buddha or Allah put limits on us or do we?

Can we not create our own religion or spiritual practice to suit our needs? As long as one’s practice and belief doesn’t impose on another’s, can we just let people practice and believe what works for them, just as we expect others to let us? Practice and let practice. Believe and let believe. Live and let live.

All of that BS about Obama and his beliefs, whether they are not “christian enough” or whatever else they are saying, is just bigotry in hiding. You’re right in your assessment.

Peace out…

  1. Robert Says:

    Michelle:

That was a very good article that you published by Alex jones. But don’t be fooled by he occasional input from Alex Jones that highlights the evils of big business. Like another Jones, Jim Jones of Guyana, he is the consummate wolf in sheep clothing.

Alex Jones is a secret white racial supremacist. When he rants against eugenics he is only talking about the practice against white babies. Like the white anti-abortionist he is secretly behind aborting OTW babies.

Sorry Doug, you haven’t done your homework on this one. But like most white people you can afford to make that mistake. He is not threat to your race. Not immediately anyway.

Notice how he spouts all the popular rants. Anti: big government, federal income tax. big banks, etc.

But behind the rhetoric what are his solutions. Control by state government. When a white man starts pitching control by the people, state government over federal, he is essentially saying we whites can control by majority rule because we have the numbers on a state level to vote in whatever laws we want.

So let’s remove the only protection the minority has against the oppression by the majority, the Federal Constitution. The sneaky way to get that done is to remove the funds by which the federal government uses to hire people to enforce the Federal Constitution.

So we turn the people against big government and hello, federal income tax, the means whereby the federal government gets its funds.

You as a white man can afford to take the gamble that Alex is genuinely against big government. But listen to his argument against it. He says the liberals want more government to regulate the cooperate world. But his argument against it is that big banks want that too because they can buy the politicians and they will use the new big government to CONTROL the masses.

Big Government CONTROLLING the masses? Does that sound familiar?

That is today’s Republican Party chief talking point. TAKE BACK our government because big government will CONROL the people. Alex Jones is their sweet, lesser of two evils, Rush Lamaugh.

He is out there working for the racists to get that middle third of the whites and the last third who are not fully alert. This is a guy who supports Ron Paul. Ron Paul is an idiot.

The only difference between Ron Paul and Sarah Palin is that he is a white male idiot. This is not about race. I am simply pointing out that if Ron Paul was a woman uttering the same ridiculously stupid opinions, we would be saying she is a moron.

Yet, we give this guy the benefit of the doubt because he is a male. Alex Jones pushes some popular issues to get the attention of people who would not give Lambaugh, the time of the day. But, Alex Jones supports Ron Paul.

What is the difference from Alex Jones attempting to make you believe that Ron is a savvy politician than any of the other republican pundit, Newt Ginrich, trying to convince you that Sarah is?

He draws you in with half truths. He neglects to point out that the big banks already owned the politicians that’s why we how we got into this crisis in the first place. Listening to him one could believe that the banking crisis started with BIG Government.

The problem with Alex Jones is that he is out there pushing the recognition of things we need to be aware of that gets our attention but he is for people like Ron Paul who is an idiot.

Alex Jones is like the Bushes and Cheneys. He wants to eliminate something like big government without telling us what he would replace it with to control the greed and power of big business.

He is a secret racist. He is against eugenics when it involves white people. He is against “federalization” because federalization guarantees all the same rights.

States on the other hand can take away the rights of the minority voter and enforce upon them the “moral” beliefs of the majority. This works well for the whites because on a state level they have the majority.

He is secretly being supported by the racists and bigots. The republican party loves this guy.

Think about what bush and cheney did. They declared Saddam to be evil. Then they declared that he was a threat to the “free” world. Then they got the rest of us to go along with their invasion of Iraq.

Alex Jones is declaring the government to be our Saddam. The Federal Government’s weapons of mass destruction are; the equal rights amendments, regulation of all industries and corporations, and money to enforce those regulations via the federal income tax.

Like Hitler, bush and cheney, Ales picks out the enemy for the people to rail against, tells them they need to take their government back, reminds them how good they had it before big government, gives them scare stories of how big government is acting to kill them off, then suggest politicians who have all the answers for them to rally around. I.E. Ron Paul

Ever wonder why all the racists use lies that big government is out to kill the people via substances introduced into their food and water on a mass scale? It’s because they know it is true. They are the politicians who have sold their votes to the big corporations to allow them to do just that, poison the world on a mass scale.

But they tell you that BIG Government is doing it. As if they are not part of that government. It is by and large the republican party that has sold out the government’s job to regulate to big business. So of course they know that big business is poisoning us on a massive scale, they sold them the right.

Now they act to prevent the federal government from taking that right back by labeling the federal government’s attempt to regulate industry as the culprit. Big Government is not poisoning anyone, UNREGULATED big business is!

Alex Jones is simply telling you what he knows to be true because he is part of the conspiracy to control the masses. He is the voice of FEAR appointed to scare those who won’t go along with the “Less Government to give free enterprise reign to self govern themselves” mantra.

So his job is to get you to go along with “Less Government to prevent BIG Government from exterminating the peoples rights and very lives” mantra.

Another caveat here is that whenever Alex mentions “the people,” he is ONLY talking about white people.

    Doug,

Relax a little, and listen to him. Take a second read. His mien kampf will begin to sound familiar. No one wants to pay taxes, but there are no free lunches. Sure they could be managed better, but that’s entirely different from eliminating the protections a Federal Government provides all the people against all comers.

Ask the Iraqi? Look what happened to their country when bush and cheney went in and destroyed their federal government.

Imagine what this country would be like if the Federal Government did not have the money or power to enforce the laws of he Constitution and its Regulatory Polices. Sure white men would go back to being in charge for a while. But there never were really “good old days” pass the fact that they as white men had all the jobs and the rights.

They were not living in a free society. The scares to keep them under control were always in place. The commies, the bomb, whatever was needed to keep the white boy feeling he needed the power of government to protect the cushy racist , sexist life he enjoyed.

America was a police state dominated my the mafia, big business and a very few wealthy families. The FBI was one of the tools used by the rich to preserve their lofty position above the rest of the nation. Its job was to spy on and blackmail any who would resist their power.

So ask yourself what is Alex proposing to replace big government if not More of the same we got from Bush?

We most certainly had very little government during the 8 years of the bush administration. Taxes were at an all time low for the rich. Whereas today taxes are at an all time low for the middle class. Go figure.

What did 8 years of bush give us? What did allowing corporations to self regulate as Ron Paul, Alex’s chosen politician, proposes give us?

Oh yeah, Financial melt down, record unemployment, the exporting of our jobs and critical industries to China, the discovery on a daily basis of he poisoning of the american people and the world on such a grand scale as to be almost too incredible to believe.

And what do we get from Alex? A play by play of what happened. Only he reports it as if it is happening because of some mysterious act of hello, BIG GOVERNMENT.

Oh, and did I mention that the Republican Party sold out to China the world’s largest communist dictatorship? Does hypocrisy have any bounds with these guys?

Alex rants and raves about the CIA always choosing dictatorship over democracies when it comes to who this country supports. A bit like white America always supporting the racist apartheid governments like Rhodesia, South African, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Or governments that enslave and terrorize women, ie any muslim run nation with oil.

That was okay because it was in the white male’s interest. Again alex is about the white male interest. You may miss his hints and rants about the how white men are the oppressed. How the white race is being maligned and disrespected.

You can afford to look over that. Like George Wallace or Glen Beck for President. But for us OTWS, it matters what the mind set of the potential leader of a moment is. Ask the Jews, a Hitler can only be an embarrassment to your race. It can be fatal to an unsuspecting and aware OTW.

Finally, your biggest clue is right before you face. While Alex rants against the mainstream media(sound familiar?), he himself is supported by some of the richest white racist men in the world.

Ask you Anonz whose pocket Alex Jones is in. He like the infamous KARTS, is bought and paid for.

    Robert

HOW MANY PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS CAN SENIORS TAKE?

Have you seen those ads promoting certain psychiatric drugs “in addition to” other ones?

It’s a disturbing example of a growing trend toward patients taking two, three and even more psychiatric drugs at a time.

The practice is especially common among senior citizens, the group that is arguably the most vulnerable to problems from taking combinations of medications.

A recent study from Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University showed that the practice of prescribing multiple psychiatric drugs (sometimes for the same symptoms) is on the rise –

about 60% of patients on psychiatric drugs were given at least two prescriptions, up from 43% nine years ago.

Sometimes the drugs are given to treat different symptoms, while sometimes doctors add another medication because the first one didn’t really work on its own.

An astonishing 33% of the patients in this study take three or more psychiatric drugs.

    WHY SO MANY DRUGS?

Four drug categories were evaluated — antidepressants (including SSRIs, such as sertraline/Zoloft)… antipsychotics such as risperidone (Risperdal)…

mood stabilizers such as lithium… and sedative-hypnotics (including benzodiazepines such as alprazolam/Xanax).

The most common combinations were antidepressants plus sedatives.

Sometimes people benefit from taking more than one of these drugs, and some drugs are designed to be used this way.

However, according to Ramin Mojtabai, MD, PhD, MPH, at Johns Hopkins University, one of the study’s authors, this is of grave concern when a rushed psychiatrist focuses on quickly reducing symptoms rather than counseling patients to resolve the underlying problem.

    IT’S JUST PLAIN DANGEROUS

Dr. Mojtabai offered some advice on what patients should do to ensure they’re not taking more psychiatric drugs than is appropriate…

When your doctor prescribes a psychiatric drug, ask if there is evidence that your symptoms will improve if you take this medication and what benefits you will gain by being on it.

Also find out whether the drug should be viewed as temporary and for how long it should be taken — and revisit the need for it as time goes on.

Don’t be taken in by pharmaceutical advertising on TV — these are sales tools, not patient-care information.
Work with your doctor to establish optimal drug management.

If your antidepressant isn’t helping, ask to switch to a different one to see if it works better, or discuss with your doctor the possibility of increasing the dose of the first medication before agreeing to add a second one.

As always, be sure your doctor is aware of all drugs you currently take. Bring the medication bottles to your visits so that you can discuss them one by one every time the doctor wants to prescribe another.

Keep track of the reasons why you take each of your medications. In addition to potentially dangerous side effects, drugs sometimes interfere with the effectiveness of other ones.

That may mean a drug should be replaced with another one, not taken in addition to it — and that’s typically a safer strategy than just taking drug on top of drug on top of drug.

The dangers of this are obvious. As Dr. Mojtabai says, patients on multiple drugs are at “increased risk of drug-drug interactions, with uncertain gains for quality of care and clinical outcomes.” There’s no way this is a prescription for good health.

Now that the federal government has given Continental permission to merge with United. There will no longer be a Continental Airline.
    ========================
    Continental changes its name
BY ERIN THOMPSON • PACIFIC DAILY NEWS • SEPTEMBER 4, 2010

Beginning Oct. 1, Continental Airlines will be no more.

Luckily, the airline that injects about $320 million in direct and indirect spending into the local economy, isn’t going away.

As part of a deal that was given antitrust approval on Aug. 27 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Continental will officially merge with United Airlines, following the approval by stockholders’ this month.

The airline will also begin repainting its fleet of airplanes with the word “United” next month.

The merger will create the largest airline in the world, and pair up the complementary networks of two airlines, which compete only in 12 domestic markets and no international markets, according to Charles Duncan, president and chief operating officer for Continental Micronesia.

“Our companies really fit together really well,” said Duncan. “Where United is strong, Continental is weak, or has no presence, and vice versa.”

While all the implications for Guam are still unclear, for Guam flyers, the merger should mean more destinations, especially to often hard-to-reach locations on the West Coast, where United provides strong service.

“Today we have a very hard time just on Continental traveling to the West coast,” said Duncan.

He added that the merger will also allow United to market Micronesian destinations to a whole new market of flyers.

“Because United is so strong on the West coast, we’re going to be marketing Micronesia to people in the West coast, who, as United customers, never even thought of coming out here.”

For the 1,050 Continental employees on Guam, however, the merger brings uncertainty.

While Duncan said the company has no plans on shedding jobs on the front end of the airline — mechanics, pilots, flight attendants — the merger will force the two companies to reconcile redundancies in back office positions.

Globally, that means that the companies will have to consolidate their two company headquarters, and possibly shed back-office jobs from both.

On Guam, Duncan said they are currently assessing jobs functions and personnel of back-office positions, but stresses that that might not mean significant job losses.

“My expectation is we’ll have some work that will move in and actually expand on Guam, and other work may move somewhere else.”

He emphasized that the airline that has serviced Guam for the last 40 years is still committed to on the island.

“We’re not abandoning Guam. We have no intent to shrink on Guam,” he said

Of course there will be job loses.

Great video, I love when politicians run away when the convo doesn’t go their way…

Robert, excellent points, I questioned his motives, but these days I can’t help myself, everyone is suspect of being bought and paid for as far as I’m concerned, I’m not happy about that general lack of trust but it is what it is…

Heather, I think Mischa has only one more grainy shot of me…so bc a woman made the statement I will get on it : ) I may be wanting to flaunt it as someone said it – hmmm – I don’t really need the attention though if you like what you’re seeing perhaps it will impact you or someone to get fit bc if you think I look good you have no idea how good I feel inside, it’s amazing…and I want it for everyone. I should’ve sent a pic of my ‘wings’ I’m quite proud of my shoulder blades, I have a rotor cuff scar tissue that left me battling pain and weakness for years, now I not only don’t have pain (or take meds that went with that) but I ahve definition I never had before.

…on that note, I wanted to bring up another form of discrimination bc I’m so annoyed with it…it’s about ‘grossly’ obese people, first of all, who’s the maroon who decided it was OK to call people ‘grossly’ anything? I find it offensive, I also don’t find bigger people to be any less intelligent or anything else and yet they get turned down for jobs, not acknowledged in stores, etc…not to mention social situtions – I guess it hit me today bc I noticed a large woman at the gym, she looked over at me several times, we’re about the same height, when I was leaving I said see you tomorrow? She asked if I came everyday and I told her 2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on, 1 day off, she said it’s my goal to lose 75 lbs, wow, I gave her a few suggestions for getting in touch with the muscles internally and for shopping and cooking and hopefully she’ll keep coming back…if any of you afre going through that type of discrimination, let me say for the record that I wish you weren’t judged immediately, tough it’s a very good barometer for knowing who you’re really dealing with, a judgemental person in disguise of the bona fide thing : )

I’ll get off my soapbox now, be back next week, I plan to finish painting and then go have a good time.

Glen, if you’re still reading here, I think of your wieght rant everytime I have a glass of champs or a chocolate or share a pint of ben & Jerry’s coconut heaven or new fave pistachio – yuuuuummmm – so thank you : )

Caio for now, Luv, Zen Lill

    Secrets to Great Grilling

    Elizabeth Karmel

What’s the secret to great grilling? That’s what our food reporter, Linda Gassenheimer, asked grilling expert Elizabeth Karmel, author of the new book Soaked, Slathered, and Seasoned. Karmel’s strategies…

Put barbecue sauce on during the last 10 minutes of cooking. Most barbecue sauces contain sugar, which burns if put on sooner than that.

Soak the food, not the grill grates, with oil. In this way, food is less likely to stick to the grates and dry out. Use olive oil. It is thicker than other oils, so it is less likely to drip and cause flare-ups.

Sprinkle the food with salt just before cooking if your marinade, sauce or rub doesn’t have salt in it. Many people forget this step, and it makes a big difference in flavor.

    Here, simple recipes from Karmel…
    CLASSIC FRENCH MARINADE

This zippy, full-flavored marinade is great on steak, pork and chicken. Marinate for 30 minutes to two hours before cooking.

    1 7.5-ounce jar Dijon mustard
    2 cups white wine
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
    1 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt
    ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
4 to 5 scallions, cleaned and chopped

Heat a medium-sized saucepan over low heat, and add mustard and wine and whisk until smooth.

Add the melted butter, sea salt, ground black pepper and scallions, and mix until the salt is dissolved. Cook, whisking occasionally, for two to three minutes.

The marinade will keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to two days. Makes 31?3 cups.

    THREE-INGREDIENT RUB

This rub has so much flavor that all the raw meat or fish needs is a coating of olive oil before sprinkling the rub on and adding salt. Great on flank steak, pork, chicken and salmon.

    2 teaspoons granulated garlic
    1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon whole cumin seeds, toasted in a dry skillet

In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix well. The rub will keep in an airtight container for up to six months. Makes 1½ tablespoons (enough for a two-to-three-pound flank steak).

    HOT PEPPER JELLY GLAZE

This sweet and hot glaze spices up fish, shrimp, scallops, vegetables and chicken. You can brush it on right after the food is taken off the grill or in the last two minutes of cooking.

1 12-ounce jar hot pepper jelly
    2 Tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar
Pinch of red chile flakes, optional
    Pinch of salt

Put hot pepper jelly in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan set over low heat. Melt the jelly, stirring occasionally until it is smooth, making sure it doesn’t burn.

When the jelly is melted, add the vinegar and stir to combine. Add the chile flakes, if desired, and salt, and stir again. If the glaze is too thick, add a bit more vinegar. Mix and taste. Adjust the seasoning, if desired.

You can use the glaze warm, or let it cool and transfer it to a clean glass jar. The glaze will keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to one week, but it will need to be reheated before using. Makes 11?3 cups.

Bottom Line/Personal interviewed Elizabeth Karmel, who owns the Grill Friends line of grilling products and is executive chef at New York City’s Hill Country restaurant. She is author of Soaked, Slathered, and Seasoned: A Complete Guide to Flavoring Food for the Grill (Wiley). http://www.girlsatthegrill.com

The issue I have with Alex Jones is that he never holds the republicans responsible for their misdeeds.

He wails against taxes and big government and tries to subtly blame big government for things that point directly to corruption in government regardless of its size.

Politicians whether they are dems, repubs,or indepens are not supposed to make crooked deals with others for their votes.

Members of all those parties have at one time or another been guilty of doing that. But Alex points the finger at “big government.”

As if we as a nation eliminate the national government that everything will then be alright because competition will force businesses to be honest.

Right, religion will force humans to be good. The guy is a complete fraud. He is a slick spokesman for big business.

His job is to trick the people into supporting candidates that advocate lassie faire. Big business wants to continue to operate without oversight.

Alex is being paid to make oversight look like the problem.
