Wonderful Women Of The World

We went to the movies last night with Elliot and Tracey.  We saw “Eat, Poop, Sleep”…I mean, “Eat, Lay, Poop, Pray”. No, no that wasn’t it…It was called “Eat, Pray, Love”. Yeah, that’s it. :) ( T & E: That joke was a nod to you both:)

What can I say, I loved it. The reviews haven’t been so good, but I still loved it. I read the book years ago when it first came out, and I devoured every page as fast as I could, only stopping to savor the sensual sensory scenes, of which there are quite a few. I happily ate it for days, and felt bittersweet and full when I finished.

It is based on a true life story of Elizabeth Gilbert, a writer, who has a cathartic moment crying on her bathroom floor, realizing that she doesn’t want to have children or be married anymore. It is a moment that so many who have read her book can connect with, relate to, in some aspect of their lives. When we are wanting to drop everything and leave our familiarities and comfort zone behind, risking everything in search for self-discovery, our meaning, our joy, our passion.

Many people just dream about it….Liz Gilbert did it. Gilbert left for a year long trip to Italy, India and Indonesia on a journey of self-discovery. During her trip to Bali she pursued two healers, a medicine man Ketut Liyar, and Wayan, a traditional Balinese healer, to talk of her “relationship”.

I want to honor her today as a “Wonderful Woman Of The World”, because her story, her book has had a huge impact on the people that have read it. Enough to have her as a guest on Oprah’s show three times because her story has resonated with so many. Pretty amazing. Women, and possibly men, who have read her write, have been so inspired, that they too decided that they too had the courage to risk everything, to find their appetite for life again. How cool is that?

The interesting thing about Gilbert’s story is that not only has she inspired others to risk everything for change, but even more interesting is the fact that quite a few not only left their comfort zone but followed Gilbert’s path. Literally. Women too have left on their own journey to Bali in pursuit of these two healers Ketut and Wayan, hoping that they too could be told hints of their life’s purpose…their destiny.

In fact, one of my most fave clients Lise, who after reading “Eat, Pray, Love”, left with her husband on a journey to Bali for a month, and part of her purpose was to find these two healers that she had read about. Two years later after her visit with Ketut who spoke two words to Lise, “Make pretty”, and experiencing Wayan’s “treatment”, and much hard work and research, her beauty company Mubeauty was launched. I have not bought Lise’s daily moisturizing complex (yet!), Muface, but when I was working with her during a style session she put the oil mixture on my face, and I really loved how it made my face feel! Yummy smell and my face felt as smooth as silk. And of course I loved that it was all natural. (Disclamier: No I am not getting any kickbacks from Mubeauty.)

Anyway, rarely when I read a book does the movie hold its own. I thought this movie did. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend it. Here’s the trailer to whet your appetite…for love, for food, for peace of mind, for travel…for HOPE

Readers: Well… what do you think? Blog me.

You seem to be a man in the know…one who is privy to info…one who has lots of time..Nope no…I take that back.  One who dedicates time and is persistent in finding the truth. Thank you for sharing so much good info on my blog. You push me to want to know more. Have you ever thought of starting your own blog? You would certainly have a following. But hey, I don’t want to encourage you too much – I’d hate to lose your input here. :)

I am running late this morning…Big day, big plans. Got to run…but first I must say…

…to all of my Burning Man friends, and new friends that I will miss meeting this time around, and especially Neal, Forrest, Ellen, Justyna, and John: “Sandman” and I couldn’t make it this year…but we’re thinking of you and wishing you a beautiful burn tonight! Neal, I will especially miss riding on the back of your turtle, and dancing to the Space Cowboys. John, love the photos you took of me awhile back, but really miss how much fun we had. I saw some of your photos from this year’s BM set up – awesome! Looking forward to next year in the desert, so I can be your subject again when I am in my most fave and free element! Wish we were there with all of you….be safe and burn on… xoxo~ “Cactus Flower”

Get Fit in Just a Few Minutes

    Joan Price

Lack of time is a primary reason people give for failing to get the recommended 30 to 60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week.

Admittedly, it can be tough to find such a big chunk of time in your busy schedule.

What helps: Instead of feeling compelled to cram an entire day’s worth of exercise into a single block of time, commit to fitting in little bursts of physical activity — two minutes, five minutes, 10 minutes — throughout the day.

The more these “fitness minutes” add up, the more you reap the benefits of exercise, including improved health, better weight control, increased energy and a sense of well-being.

    IN THE MORNING…

When your alarm clock rings — instead of pressing the snooze button, get up and use those extra minutes to do some gentle yoga poses.

While brushing your teeth — do calf raises. Standing, slowly rise onto the balls of your feet… hold for several seconds… return to the starting position. Repeat, continuing for two minutes.

In the shower — give your upper back muscles a workout. Squeeze your shoulder blades together… hold for five to 10 seconds… rest for a moment. Repeat 10 to 15 times.

While you style your hair — squeeze your buttocks muscles as hard as you can for 10 seconds… rest for several seconds… repeat five to 10 times.

When going down stairs — turn around at the bottom of the stairs and go back up, making one or more extra up-and-down trips.

As the coffee is brewing — hop on your right foot 10 times… then hop on the left foot. Repeat twice.

When letting the dog out — go with him for a short walk.

    OUT AND ABOUT…

At the gas station — walk inside to pay rather than swiping a credit card at the pump. Instead of sitting in your car as the gas flows, clean all your windows, alternating the hand that holds the squeegee.

At every red light — do shoulder shrugs and roll your shoulders… repeatedly tighten and release your thigh muscles… rotate one wrist, then the other wrist.

When parking — instead of finding a spot close to your destination, get one a few blocks away.

Upon entering a store — if all the items you need will fit in a shopping basket, choose a basket instead of a cart.

As you shop — if you need a cart, do 10 bicep curls with weightier items — soup cans, juice jugs — before placing them in your cart. (If you feel silly doing this in public, do your bicep curls at home as you put the items in the pantry.)

While waiting in line — work your abdominal muscles. Suck in your belly and tighten your abs… hold for 10 seconds… relax. Repeat five to 10 times.

On a long car trip — stop every 50 miles or so, and take a walk around a rest stop or scenic area.

When traveling by bus, plane or train — walk up and down the aisle for at least five minutes every hour.

    AT YOUR DESK…

While on the phone — march in place or pace around your office.

As you read e-mail — lift your right foot several inches off the floor… rotate your ankle clockwise several times, then counterclockwise… lower the foot. Repeat on the left side.

If you need to talk with a coworker — walk over to her office instead of phoning. When you get back to your own desk, before sitting down, hold your arms out to the side and circle them forward 15 times, then backward.

Each time you finish a task — do “chair dips.” With feet flat on the floor, place your hands on the armrests and push your body up (so your rear end hovers above the seat)… hold for several seconds… lower yourself back into the chair. Repeat 10 times. (Skip this if your chair has wheels.)

During your lunch break — take a walk through the office complex.

In the restroom — stand and reach for the sky for 30 seconds… then do 10 jumping jacks.

If you drop a pencil (or at least once a day) — do a variation on toe touches. Stand up, bend down, pick up the pencil, straighten up… drop the pencil again. Repeat 10 times.

    IN THE EVENING…

Before starting dinner — take a quick ride around the neighborhood on your bicycle.

At the dinner table — do leg lifts. Sit with feet flat on the floor. Straighten your right leg to hold your right foot out in front of you…

lift your right thigh a few inches off the chair and hold for several seconds… lower the foot. Repeat 10 times, then switch to the left leg.

Doing laundry — when you grab a basket of clothes, tighten abdominal muscles and, with your back straight, lift the basket from hip height to chest height five times.

Listening to the radio or a CD — dance around the room for one entire song. Repeat several times.

While watching TV — pop an exercise video or DVD in your player. Every time the TV show cuts to a commercial break, turn on the player and follow along with the workout for several minutes.

Climbing the stairs — take the steps two at a time. (Do not do this if you have balance problems.)

After washing your face — tilt your head slowly from side to side, feeling a good stretch along your neck…

try to touch your chin to your chest to stretch the back of your neck.

Before climbing into bed — raise your arms overhead… tilt gently to the right, feeling the stretch along the left side of your torso… then tilt to the left. Repeat five times.

When you lie down — do knee hugs. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the mattress.

Raise one leg, place your hands behind the thigh and draw the leg toward your chest. Hold for 30 seconds… return to starting position. Repeat with the other leg.

Closing your eyes — breathe in and out deeply 10 times, feeling grateful for all that your body was capable of doing during the day.

Women’s Health interviewed Joan Price, a certified fitness instructor and motivational speaker based in Sebastopol, California, and author of six books, including The Anytime, Anywhere Exercise Book (iUniverse).

She credits her commitment to exercise for her success in twice regaining the ability to walk and dance after two head-on car crashes. http://www.joanprice.com

  11. Anna of Guam Says:

    The primary results are in.
    ===================
    by Michele Catahay

Guam – It was a long night at the University of Guam Field House, as the Guam Election Commission had been tabulating results for the Decision 2010 Primary Election.

The gubernatorial team of Eddie Calvo and Ray Tenorio will move on to the General Election to face the Democratic team of Carl Gutierrez and Frank Aguon, Jr.

Calvo/Tenorio will represent the GOP after beating Mike Cruz and Jim Espaldon. After tabulating the results (pending certification by the Guam Election Commission), Calvo/Tenorio finished with 9,221 votes, while Mike Cruz/Jim Espaldon garnered 6,458 votes.

Gracious in defeat, a concession was delivered just after 1:30 in the morning. Cruz addressed his supporters, saying, “We want to put our message out there.

We were outstretched by our opponents; we were only running for the last three and a half months, but it’s clear the people of Guam have made a decision.

I want to tell you all that your support and your belief has been tremendous. What we want to do for the people of Guam – it just lifted me on a daily basis.

Every time I wake up in the morning, despite the difficulties and the hardship of having to run through this. I want Jim to speak also, but from myself and Jennifer, we love you guys.”

After the concession was made in Anigua, Calvo thanked his own supporters and talked about party unity.

“He [Cruz] ran a campaign about ‘bringing our people together’ – it was a positive message. We set out and we continue to reach out to the people, and what they say in the Good Book, ‘Sometimes you get slapped in the face, you turn the other cheek.’

That is something we need to bring into our style of politics. It is now time to bring everyone together. Please congratulate Mike Cruz and Jim Espaldon, they ran a very good campaign.”

But not even an hour after the concession was made, Cruz/Espaldon supporter Carlo Branch (an employee of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor), made his way to Anigua to show his support for the Democrat team of Carl Gutierrez and Frank Aguon, Jr. Aguon said of Branch’s gesture, “He came here, he’s representing to some extent…extend that message to Lieutenant Governor Mike Cruz and Senator Jim Espaldon.”

As the Democrats welcomed Branch to their camp, Espaldon was welcomed with open arms to the Calvo/Tenorio headquarters in Maite, where he personally pledged his support to his legislative colleagues.

“My friends, I want to thank you for welcoming us very warmly,” he began. “In any election, this is about the will of the people – after a certain point with the ballots being counted, Mike and I being realists, mathematically we know the people have spoken. And we know they want Eddie Calvo and Ray Tenorio to win Adelup.”

Espaldon apologized on behalf of his Cruz, noting that his running mate could not join him due to an emergency medical situation that occurred after the concession speech at the headquarters – KUAM News was informed a woman had a seizure during the event, and Cruz, a physician, was tending to her.

Nonetheless, Espaldon assured them that they would be meeting with Calvo and Tenorio in the next few days to see how they can help move the Republican team forward.

    Booze your way past arthritis

Natural arthritis relief is just a sip away–because a new study finds that drinking can help beat the pain.

Not only that, but a steady supply of adult beverages might even prevent rheumatoid arthritis in the first place.

British researchers compared the drinking habits of 873 patients with rheumatoid arthritis to 1,004 without the condition. Overall, they found that the people who drank the most had less severe symptoms than those who didn’t drink at all, or those who drank rarely.

By “the most” we’re talking about moderate drinkers here, not problem boozers. The drinkers in this study enjoyed their alcohol more than 10 days out of each month, but never more than 10 drinks per week.

The researchers put the patients through a series of tests, and by just about every measure the drinkers were better off. They had less joint pain, less swelling, and less disability overall than the nondrinkers. They also had less damage in their joints, according to X-rays, and blood tests found lower levels of inflammation.

That’s good news for drinkers–but wait, because it gets even better. The study in the journal Rheumatology also found that nondrinkers were four times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than people who drank more than 10 days each month.

That’s consistent with the body of research so far. In fact, a 2008 study out of Sweden found that people who drank five glasses of wine per week had half the arthritis risk of people who drink little or no alcohol.

Experts have already sprung into action, warning that alcohol might interact badly with some of the drugs given to arthritis patients. But if you’re suffering from this condition, maybe it’s time to give up those drugs and try something else.

And it doesn’t necessarily have to be drinking, because there are other safe, drug-free methods of beating the pain.

Keep an eye out for Tuesday’s House Call, where I’ll tell you about the latest study on how to reduce arthritis pain and improve function.

    ——————–
If you got arthritis, don’t knock it til you try it.
