Monkey Moms and Monkids

Posted by Michelle Moquin on August 12th, 2010

Bookmark and Share

I first heard about “Monkey Moms” and “Monkids” the other day while watching the Discovery Channel. I couldn’t pull myself away from the TV, because what I saw was so disturbing to me. People, mostly women who have a strong love for “babies”, shell out big bucks to buy a baby monkey so that they can care for the “baby” for the next 30 years.

Capuchin baby Monkey are taken from their mothers, sometimes when they are only 3 days old. This is obviously not natural. Baby monkeys hang onto their mothers backs for months, bonding and growing. When they are taken away from their natural mothers and given to their human mothers, they innately want to bond, so they rock back and forth on a blanket. Depriving them of their natural mothers and this bonding process is cruel and inhumane.

Yet these soon-to-be “monkey moms” don’t seem to think of the feelings of these little creatures, they call “monkids”; they are only thinking of themselves and their need to have a “forever baby”. They dress their “forever babies” in human clothes and feed them human food. This is sick and cruel and obviously not healthy for the monkey.

Oh…but what happens when their “forever baby” naturally gets aggressive? Well then we’ll just remove the little ones teeth. Problem solved. Well what happens after years of this unnatural and abusive treatment of these “monkids”, and the “forever baby” gets older and just doesn’t feel like playing human baby anymore? Well, naturally they attack. Oops…time to get rid of the “forever baby”.

Monkeys as surrogate children

If you thought fake babies were a weird substitute for having actual children, what do you think about monkeys? As in primates? As in monkids? Apparently, adopting capuchin monkeys and treating them just like a human member of the family is all the rage among some folks. Empty-nesters and those who can’t or don’t want to have actual children are shelling out big bucks for monkeys who will take their place in the family as babies who never grow up.

Lori Johnson adopted her capuchin, Jessy, because she was lonely after her children grew up and left home. Depressed, she decided that what would cheer her up would be to rip a baby monkey from its mother and dress it up in baby clothes and treat it like her own child. When Jessy became a little aggressive, Lori had the monkey’s teeth removed. That solved the problem and now they are a happy little family, sharing the dinner table and even the bed. “I couldn’t imagine not having her,” Lori says. “We do something all the time with her.”

Not all monkid stories have a happily-ever-after. Kari Bagnall, who runs a sanctuary for monkeys whose human parents could no longer care for them, sees first-hand the dark side of adopting wild animals as pets or surrogate children. “I have monkeys here that the people have had for 20 years. Never had a problem,” Bagnall says. “Twenty years later, the monkey attacks. So it’s just something, it’s going to happen. It’s not a matter of, you know, if they’re going to attack. It’s when.”

I don’t doubt that Lori Johnson, and the estimated 15,000 like her in the United States, truly love their little monkey children. And I can even see the appeal in adopting a creature that will forever remain infantile and cute. But I think it is the height of selfishness to take an intelligent creature away from its natural mother and habitat because it makes you happy.

Readers: Ya know, I don’t believe these “monkey moms” truly love their “monkids”. If they had any feelings and respect for these primates they would never even consider taking them away from their natural parents, siblings, and environment. Period. They are destroying these beautiful little creatures lives, all for their own happiness – Their desire to have a “forever baby”. This is not love – this is pure selfishness.

The Captive Primate Safety Act HR – 80 needs to pass. This practice of being able to sell primates to humans for their own selfish pleasure is just disgusting, cruel, inhumane, and it needs to be stopped. Websites such as Wild Animal World, sell exotic animals. Their tag line: “Captive Primate, Safety Act HR – 80 – We will fight for our rights and our primates.” “Our” primates. Since when is it okay to rip primates from the loving arms of its natural mother so that one can claim it as its “own”?

All I can say is I wish that all of these “monkey moms” could experience having their own human child ripped from their arms at 3 days old and sold. Maybe then they would understand what it feels like, and have a little compassion and respect for the creatures that we are blessed to share this planet with.

Comments?

Zen Lill: Perhaps having “Monkeys” in the back of my brain was the reasoning for my “visual” the other day. Ugh…gotta lose that visual!

ZL and Doug: I’m into pushing this “aXe” too. Here’s the official site. I’m not sure if they are for sale yet though.

Ruth: This article is just horrific. Just when I think that we are getting ahold of our food sources, and heading in the right direction, there are articles like this that remind me that big money would rather fleece the people than feed us healthy foods. I have more to say on this but I will add it to my write tomorrow.

As far as  ”aXe” “size”: I have no idea but that is a good question. Happy to hear that you are going to be purchasing them.

PS. I too hope that you hear from Anonz soon.

Mike: Nothing new there. The Repugs will do anything to win. Readers, Listen to Mike and listen to me. Get out and vote. I can’t express enough how we must go out to the polls when the time comes and vote. They are expecting many people to stay on the couch for these midterms. We can’t let that happen. Make sure you and everyone you know makes it to the polls.

Dana: Again, here is the official site.  Good luck.

Got to run. Peace out…

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Ruth, and Michelle, I often feel like the both of you when I write in another complaint about how white America treats its OTWs. But life is what it is in America one day after another of the white boy doing what he can to hurt us in whatever way he can.

It seems that working hard and achieving a bit of success doesn’t bring any immunity from the racism and bigotry of the white boy.

Bridgeport Couple Charged With Refusing To Sell Home To Black Buyers
    First Posted: 08-10-10 04:06 PM   |   Updated: 08-11-10 10:52 AM

A Chicago couple faces federal discrimination charges after allegedly refusing to sell their South Side home to a black couple because of their race.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced charges against Daniel and Adrienne Sabbia, and their real estate agent Jeffrey Lowe after they allegedly took their home off the market when a black couple submitted the highest offer, Fox Chicago reports.

According to a complaint filed by HUD, the Sabbia’s 5,000-8,000-square-foot home on the 3300 block of South Normal had been listed for $1.799 million, and had been on the market for two years. In January, the home was taken off the market when radio personality George Willborn and his wife, businesswoman Peytyn Willborn, made a $1.7 million offer to buy the home–the highest offer received on the property.

After accepting the price and preparing for a final sales contract, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Sabbias then refused to sign:

HUD said that in an interview with an investigator, the real estate agent for the property, Jeffrey Lowe of Lowe Group Chicago Inc., said Daniel Sabbia told him he would rather not sell to an African-American.

The couple then took the home off the market–claiming they could not find a suitable new home and wanted to keep their children in the same schools. But, after Willborn filed a complaint, the deal was apparently back on. From Fox Chicago:

After the Willborns filed a complaint with HUD, Lowe contacted them and offered to sell the home, with all its furniture, for $1.799 million, the complaint alleges. And two months later in March 2010, the home was re-listed at that price.

“Racial fairness is important at all income levels,” John Trasviña, HUD assistant secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity said in a statement. “Civil rights enforcement must be the effective shield against housing discrimination that in this case wealth was not.”

The complaint, which alleges violations of the Fair Housing Act, will lead to a hearing before an administrative law judge, according to the Sun-Times. It could be moved to a federal court if any person involved wants it to be. The Sabbias could be fined up to $16,000 and a judge could also award punitive damages.
    ====================================

I’m sure they can afford the fine of !6K. But the interesting thing is that this article was followed by a picture of Ron Paul and and request for donations to stop Obama and to “TAKE OUR NATION BACK.” The implication being that we will be able to return to the times when we could discriminate.

We both know that he will get a sizable donation for this thoughtful placement.

    Robert

  2. General Info Says:

    Bumper Sticker Alert

    Paul Bell, PhD
    Colorado State University

Drivers with car bumper stickers are more aggressive. A study of drivers found that those with cars “personalized” with bumper stickers and ornaments are more likely to act out anger on the road by flashing lights, tailgating and blocking other drivers.

The more markers there are on a car, the more likely the driver is to exhibit road rage when feeling provoked — such as after being cut off. The specific message made no difference — even when innocuous, such as “baby on board.”

  3. Andrea Says:

Thousands and thousands of dead fish are washing up on our shores here in Jersey.

  4. Zen Lill Says:

Lori Johnson and others like her need a ‘reinventing me’ course or therapy, coping with yourself and handling and mastering your entions (which can be fleeting) in any situation – be it loneliness, depression, stage of life stuff is imperative before you just decide taking care of another whatever (man/woman, child, dog/cat, or baby monkeys) – people always do what’s in their own best interests usually and that often doesn’t include flashing forward to glimpse their impact on another life. Sad but true.

I’ll click on the link – thanks and Dana in Iran, if it’s doable via this link you can rest assured that this one will come through. I love this one, it’s actively taking justice into your hands (or vagina, if you will) and I am a total vigilante’ when it comes to rapists. They deserve the worst form of slow torture available.

Ruth, thanks for the update. In this case I’m having a hard te believing no news is good news though. If you fo hear from him and he is fine would you please tell h about this aXe project? Thanks.

    Caio for now, Zen Lill

  5. Zen Lill Says:

Robert just read that comment, all I can say is holy shit. That’s big time bull shit…I would guess the selling couple also got a earful from their uppity White neighbors about the ‘integrity if the neighborhood’ trust me, I’m White and I know more ‘upscale’ White people than I want to. – ZL

  6. Zen Lill Says:

Ok a letter has been sent to Sonnet Ehlers, the founder of RapeaXe, re: masss distribution in areas of the world at greatest risk to women, Africa, ME, Asia, wherever the threat exists. I’ll keep you posted on her response. If there is a way to get goin’ on for my global sistahs I will do it and maybe some of you might want to assist in the matter. I’m just sayin’ : ) I can think of some Western women who might want to insert one while out and about at night, bc we should be able to be wherever we want to be when we want to be there without hassle or judgement. – ZL

  7. Ruth Says:

    Zen Lill

I will most certainly tell Anonz about it if you wish. But when (I have to think positively on this) he returns, he will be reading the blog and I’m certain that it would be better received coming from you.

    Ruth

I would be so happy to get those for us here in Kenya, I and my sisters will be keeping an eye here to see how things go.

It is my belief that the white neighbors allowed the couple to float that balloon to see if they too could get away with the same behavior. I do not think for one moment that a person acts that aberrant from the social mores of their peer group.

Some are avant garde, if you will, so as to make a name or impress their peers. But they have to have some indication that the risk is worth the effort. Sure now the neighbors will disclaim them. But they fully participated in that float.

[...] Robert: It is just like the bigots: They don’t care what color your skin is as long as it is white; they too don’t care how much money you make or don’t make, they consider themselves “Better”.  Your successes don’t mean much should you not be blessed with white skin. Once it again, with whites, it all comes down to the color of one’s skin that makes one “better”, not giving any deference to the person who is actually better “at something”, a talent, no matter what color their skin is.
