The 39 Democrats That Voted ‘Nay’ On The Health Care Bill, The 64 That Voted ‘Aye’ On The Stupak Amendment

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th November 2009

Libby:  You asked. And to make it clear for everyone to see, here are the 39 Democrats that voted against the health care bill.

Charlie Melancon(LA. 3)

John Tanner(TENN. 8)

If you want to see the full chart click here.

I supported Kucinich and his HR676 plan. I appreciated his unwavering commitment towards the single payer, as much as I knew it was a long shot. Hell, health care reform in itself was at one point a long shot, but we stuck in there and did what we needed to do to get it passed. And as I mentioned yesterday, at the expense of women’s health which I am not happy about at all.

But to not have health care reform when so many have died, and are dying because of the lack of insurance is a reason in itself to vote for reform.  We have to start somewhere and I am hoping that all of us will continue to fight for women’s health to be made a priority in our health care system.

And…since I’m posting those that opposed the health bill, I thought I would post those that voted ‘aye’ on the Stupak amendment that I wrote about yesterday. I suggest you copy and paste to your desk top too – we need to keep our eyes on this bunch too.

And as Libby suggested, “…learn their names and vote them out in the primaries and select democrats that will support Obama.”….And in my own words, “….select democrats that support women too.”

Larry: I thought it was a hoot too. :)

Lora:  I had read about animals and the H1N1 too and was concerned over Lucy our beloved dog getting it. Thanks for the post. Hafa Adai.

Robert: Is this from our used-to-be-a-regular Robert or ? Anyway….Great post about viagra and the side effects. Once again people reach for the ‘quick solution’ when  losing some weight, eating better and getting some exercise may be the only thing you need to do to engage again. And it’s not like all of those things aren’t good for your overall health anyway. Hmm….Men are you reading?

Helena: Loved your joke! Tooo funny.

Mike: I did not go – a bit out of my price range, but I hope that they had a successful turnout.

Doug: Thanks. You’re right.  This isn’t over.

Anna: You can also blame it on fast food restaurants such as McDonalds coming to town.  I am always shocked when I see a country that is healthy living off of their native traditional foods, and then a fast food restaurant enters the scene- the next thing you know there is an obesity problem not to mention other health problems like the ones you talked about. Hafa Adai.

Hi Evelyn:  Yeah, I figured when I saw no comments that something was up again. Thanks for your post. I am big on probiotics and I highly recommend Dr. David Williams. Health info has posted him before.

Hey Eunice: Thanks for your post. Like Doug and your post mentioned, we still need to finish this fight. If people can donate to both, hopefully they will.

Peace out.

Blog Biz

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 30th September 2009

Readers:  As you may have noticed this past week, I have posted some Google ads in the side columns and at the very top of my blog. I have limited them to only a few so I hope that they are not too in-your-face.

Google places ads that are relevant to my site’s content. That’s the good news. The bad news is, I don’t have a choice of which ads are shown. This means that if I choose to show political ads, or health care ads, there will be ads shown from all sides. Kind of a bummer. But for the most part, I am okay with what is being shown.  However, there are a few that go against my grain, and every time they pop up, I get more than a little irritated. For example, as you all know, I support Obama’s health care and it is disturbing to me when ads are displayed in the contrary.

Making money is a necessity in life and my plan, in regards to advertising on my blog, is to generate an income. However, my integrity is a characteristic I take pride in. And right now some of these ads being displayed are messing with my integrity. They are not ads that I support, nor do I want to see them on my blog.

So, bear with me; I have been working on it. If these ads are bugging you, you can imagine what they are doing to me as this is my blog and I don’t like not being in control of the ads being placed. But as I said, I have been working on it, and recently I discovered just how to filter out those ads that rub me wrong: ads that I definitely do not want on my blog.  So to date, I have filtered out a few.

Since I don’t have control right now, (hopefully that will change in the future)  of choosing the ads that I want to place, the most I can do is when I see an ad that I do not like, is to have it immediately filtered out.

I am also going to continue researching other avenues. I have been offered assistance in the past by a few of my readers out there to help me market my blog. I have expressed interest but I have not heard from any of you. Perhaps you could e-mail me or try again if you already have. I could certainly use some assistance and I would be so grateful – thanks.

I’m keeping today’s post strictly biz, but I want to wish all of you a wonderful day in your world where ever you happen to be! Thank for tuning in. I’m always delighted to know you are reading.  As always…..

….peace out.

michelle

Let’s Talk About Breasts

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 20th September 2009

Good Morning….Did I get your attention?

Yes, we are going to talk about breasts, but in a serious manner because this is a serious and important topic.  Breast cancer is a big deal these days. And I mean it is a big deal not because it is a form of cancer, that in itself is obviously a big deal, but because the stats, especially for women, are high. Here are the numbers:

-One in eight women or 12.6% of all women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.

-Breast cancer risk increases with age and every woman is at risk.

-Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer.

-Seventy-seven percent of women with breast cancer are over 50.

Since 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer, it is no wonder that there have been several women in my life that have been struck with it. Men, you too are vulnerable.  But the best way for prevention is to have yourself checked yearly and for those with breast cancer in their family history, two times per year at least is required.

Girls, we all know what it is like to have our yearly feels-like-my-breast-is-being-run-over-by-a-tire-mamogram. Not exactly a thrill is it? Well here’s something fairly new that might excite you. I was sent this article that I think women especially will appreciate. Read on…..

BETTER THAN A MAMMOGRAM?

Till now, I’d only ever encountered ads and information on breast thermography for breast cancer screening in those hippy-dippy newspapers you pick up for free at the health food store. I was interested, therefore, to read a new report from a major academic medical center affirming the efficacy of breast thermography as an early screening tool for cancer detection.

THERMOGRAPHY PICKS UP 97% OF CANCERS

A study published in the October 2008 issue of the American Journal of Surgery by researchers at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell reported a high percentage of success with biopsy plus digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), the most advanced form of breast thermography, as a follow-up to suspicious mammogram or ultrasound results. Sixty biopsies proved malignant and 34 were benign. The investigators found that DITI correctly identified 58 of the 60 malignancies (97%), and that digital infrared thermal imaging can be a valuable adjunct to mammography or ultrasound in the early detection of breast cancer and that it also has merit for use in the clinical monitoring of breast cancer response to therapy.

HOW DOES THERMOGRAPHY WORK?

Also known as infrared imaging, this screening test detects changes in body heat that may indicate the presence of cancer in an early stage. The technology, used in many forms for a variety of purposes (including airport security), has been used for diagnostic purposes since the 1960s, and was FDA-approved in 1982 as an adjunct for breast cancer diagnosis. In this case, its application is based on the theory that metabolic activity and vascular circulation in pre-cancerous and cancerous tissue is higher than in normal breast tissue, generating heat. Thermography looks for this increase in temperature, highlighting areas with increased blood flow and new blood vessel growth, both possible signs of tumor development.

Daily Health News contributing editor Andrew Rubman, ND, told me that DITI is especially helpful in young women with dense breasts (which tend to have slightly diminished blood flow) and/or those considered at high risk for cancer. He said that women with fibrocystic or large breasts, as well as those who have breast implants, may also benefit from this technology. A key advantage of breast thermography is that no radiation is involved and it’s also non-invasive.

NUTS & BOLTS

It’s a toss-up whether thermographic screening is more or less pleasant than conventional mammography. It’s not exactly comfortable (unless you love cold temperatures) but it doesn’t involve squishing your breasts between cold metal plates. Here are the nuts and bolts of what you need to know…

Before your test: Important precautions — don’t schedule your test during menstruation and avoid prolonged sun exposure for five days prior to testing. Also stay away from caffeine, anti-inflammatory medications and strenuous exercise the day of the scan. All these things may affect your body temperature and/or metabolism.

What will happen: In the office, you will be asked to undress completely to the waist and sit for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. The room will be very cool — uncomfortably so — but this is an important aspect of the test, as your skin needs to adjust to the “cold stress” environment of approximately 66 degrees Fahrenheit for accurate assessment. Next the technician will ask you to plunge your hands into cool water for one full minute. Normal blood vessels will react by constricting, while abnormal vessels typically do not constrict. The technician will then ask you to put your hands on the top of your head, elbows extended outward to lift the breasts (some labs have bars for you to hold on to). After 60 seconds have passed, the technician will take a series of breast scans that reveal any differentiation between healthy and unhealthy (or “hot”) blood vessels on the computer screen. Typically, two sets of images are taken, before and after cold exposure.

Results: Some facilities will give you findings on the spot followed by a written report — others will send a written report later.

IT’S NOT PERFECT

Because it has some deficits, breast thermography should not be considered a replacement for mammography, but it does have utility as an adjunct therapy, Dr. Rubman said. For one thing, there is some debate about how early it is able to detect cancer. Another issue is that thermography is still relatively uncommon and may not be easy to find in your area.

If you opt for DITI, Dr. Rubman recommends that you consult a technician who is trained in performing and interpreting thermography. He/she should be certified by the International Academy of Clinical Thermology, International Thermographic Society, American Academy of Medical Infrared Imaging or the American Academy of Thermology. The cost may be as high as $200 or more, and in most cases is not covered by health insurance.

Breast cancer screening guidelines are based on your age and degree of risk. Women at average risk should begin having annual mammograms at age 40. But if you are at high risk (e.g., for genetic reasons or due to family history), you may want to ask your doctor about adding breast thermography as a valuable form of adjunct screening. It can provide useful information that may turn out to make a big difference to your health.

Readers: Comments? Blog me.

Still at the beach enjoying the sunshine, so I’ll catch up with your comments tomorrow.  Enjoy yourself whatever you do….

Blog Update

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 18th September 2009

Dear Readers:  I am taking my blog to another level. For you newbies out there, quite some time ago I moved my blog to this site so that I could advertise and generate an income. Why? So that I could continue to write daily and provide you with interesting articles on all the current topics and events happening in our world.

However, because I write out of the love of my blog and the goodness of my heart, because I write for the connection to you, my readers, and because I write out of the commitment that I made over two years ago, I never pursued getting any further than posting a ‘Donate’ page and offering a few products to buy. But that is now going to change.

I value my time as much as I know all of you value your time. I know it sounds trite, but we all know that time is money. And I have reached a point in my life where I not only want to be compensated for my valuable time, but that I need to be compensated for my valuable time in order to continue in the manner that I do.

Over two years, I made a commitment to start a blog and write, not knowing what my writing would evolve into. As much as I had an interest in current events and the things that I was passionate about, I never took action in the form that I do today…I never got as involved except as a voice for the animals, as I do today.

Today I don quite a few hats. I have become a political animal, I have become an environmental activist, I have become an crusader for women’s rights and issues, I have become a voice against racism, I have become an advocate for otw’s, and lastly, I continue to become a voice for the ones that don’t speak our language: the animals. All because I truly care.

Almost every moment that I am not working, I am either watching the news, listening to the radio or researching the net so that I can write, and present you with my daily writes, via my blog. Sometimes I learn so much on a daily basis, that I wish that I could post more than once a day. I am so driven by my blog…I am so committed to my daily writes to you, my readers, that there is rarely a moment that I am not thinking of you and what my next topic of discussion will be. Even when I am driving listening to the radio, I am scribbling notes on my notepad for reference later. (I know…dangerous and crazy and something I must stop.) But what goes through my mind is, “I have to jot this down; my readers need to get this information.”  I barely have a life outside of my blog. (Really! Doug can verify this) This is not a complaint as it is my choice, as it has been my commitment to you, since day one. All because I truly care.

I have written every day and I want to continue to write everyday.  My mission has always been to uplift and inspire you, to inform and teach, to shed light and enlighten, by writing and providing a variety of interesting, and thought provoking topics. Believe me, it is not an easy job, and many times my choice of topics are not always the most pleasant. But, I know how much you, my readers, count on this daily blog. I know how much you, my readers, count on me to show up. And really, I look forward to you showing up too :)

So this is what’s happening: The times are different than they were even a year ago. I can not continue my blog in the manner that I do unless I can generate an income from it. It is a full time job besides the work that I do outside of writing. It really is that simple.

I have always been here for you. Even when I didn’t want to drag myself out of bed. You have written me asking for me to write about certain topics, and I have. You have asked that I post by a certain time and I have complied though sometimes it has been challenging. You have the choice to tune me out by not tuning in. I have that choice too, but because of my commitment, it was a choice that I vowed I would never take.

This is where you come in. Now I’m asking for you to be here for me. Now I asking you to help me to be able to continue to write, so that I can fulfill my mission daily. If you enjoy my blog and the daily writes, if you look forward to the information that I and other readers provide, if you value my time and insight, if you enjoy the beings that show up here, human and otherwise, if you want me to be able to continue, I am asking you to make a donation.

You can donate as much as you want or as little as you want; the amount is entirely up to you. Any amount is appreciated. Or buy one of my products by visiting the Stock Ups page. Many of you asked for them and now they’re available. 10% of everything that you buy will be donated to one of my favorite charities listed on the Stock Ups page. And of course, your anonymity, as always, will be respected.

As mentioned above, I am taking my blog to another level, which means that I will be asking for donations more than just this once. I am working on a few ideas to make the pledge drives fun. You may have noticed that a ‘Donate’ button has now been permanently placed on the left hand column of this page. A ‘Donate’ button will also be at the end of every post. Both as reminders to support this blog.

Taking this blog to another level means that I will be advertising too. I am planning to have ads up by the beginning of next week.

That’s it.  I hope that you can understand where I am coming from and you will support me in this much needed change. If you have any questions, comments, or complaints, as usual, blog me. I am open to all.  Thank you again for all that you do to make this blog successful, and thank you in advance for helping me to keep it going. I am grateful to all of you.

PS: I do have a few of you that I want to respond to from yesterday’s comments, but I will reserve them for tomorrow.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

Saturday Silence

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 12th September 2009

Hello….

I don’t know what’s up but I am going to honor what ever is happening and just be silent for today. Do what you will and I’ll check back in tomorrow.

Oh one last thing…Since the girls have got you all worked up  and lost in ass cheeks Billy, I thought I would at least post this one for you:

“A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.”

Peace out.

Gratefully your blog host,
