Emily: I have not be able to access my blog this morning either, which is the reason for my very late post. I am just as frustrated as you and the rest of my readers.

Although I do not attribute it to the government, this time, but the amount of space debris that is in our atmosphere interfering with out satellites, so I have been informed. The debris out there not only is harmful to our satellites, but to visiting aliens it is like a war zone, and they are not happy. I’m not happy about it either. Not only are we polluting our planet, but we are polluting our atmosphere.

Readers: How about trying to use less on this planet so that we create less trash? Can we all decide today to make one small change, somewhere in your life that has less of an impact on our planet? Here’s a video to inspire you, in honor of Earth Day. Like I said before Earth Day can not be just ONE day a year. Thanks.

Peace out….

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Social Networks May Be The Next Target For Investment Scams

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th May 2010

Readers: I know I have been including a lot of articles about scams lately, but obviously there is a lot of info to give out. The scammers are out and they’re trying to get a piece of you. Social networking is big these days, (FaceBook, Twitter, etc.) and the scammers know it.

I found this article by Scambusters particularly interesting and enlightening. Be sure to hit the hyperlinks too – there’s a lot of good stuff here that you don’t want to miss. I’d hate for any of my readers to be scammed, again.

>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>
Are Facebook and Twitter Next For Investment Scams?
<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>

Hear the cry of the investment scams artist: It’s going to be the next big thing; it’s going to change the game; hardly anyone knows about it… yet.

They’re going to let you in on the secret, so you should sell the family silver and pile the proceeds into whatever it is they’re selling.

It’s always the same old song, but often sung in a different voice. And it seems there are plenty of people who are willing to listen.

We covered investment scams in some depth in previous issues:

But now, there are new worries about the growing use of the Internet as a vehicle for investment scams, especially on social networks like Facebook and Twitter and in blogs.

These sites have taken over from the old Internet bulletin boards and chat rooms where “pump and dump” scammers would try to promote their stocks.

You could say it’s the next big thing in the Internet investment scams world.

In fact, the main regulator of US security firms, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), has recently issued guidance to its members about what they should and shouldn’t say about the investments they promote in blogs and on social networks.

Their message, basically, is: “We’re watching you.”

Regulators and law enforcement agencies are particularly worried about the risk of affinity fraud on these sites.

Affinity scams, which we also covered in issue #124, rely on people building and exploiting friendships, which is precisely what social networking sites do. (I blogged about it here too)

You get a bunch of friends or followers, lull them into thinking you’re a good guy, then you pass on your bogus investment tip.

New wave of green scams

And it’s not just stocks and shares the latest investments scams artists are pushing. Wherever there’s a leading edge in technology or a topical issue that’s attracting major public interest, you’ll find the crooks.

In particular, FINRA has also recently expressed concern about tech-related green scams — online and offline.

“Right now there are a lot of legitimate stories in the news about green energy initiatives and con artists want to leverage people’s interest in green energy to make a quick buck at investors’ expense,” says John Gannon, the organization’s VP for Investor Education.

“There is a lot of interest in companies that claim to provide green energy, but (we want) to remind investors to be vigilant about avoiding investment scams, no matter how they are packaged.”

The latest green investment scam tricks, for instance, include:

* Solar stock “pump and dump” schemes touting a 200% gain.

* Investing in a supposed substitute for charcoal made from
organic waste or a system for converting plastic to oil at $10
a barrel.

* An opportunity to invest in environment-related patents in
which the fraudster holds out the prospect of a 1,000% return!

Crazy, isn’t it? But investors still plowed in their money.

Worse still, these investment scams crooks love nothing better than spinning such a convincing tale that their victims even remortgage their homes, sell everything they’ve got and cash in their IRAs and 401Ks to get in on the next big thing – which turns out to be the scammers’ bank accounts.

You probably read our earlier report on green scams, in which we warned about renewable technology and miracle device scams.

And since we are enthusiastic fans and practical users of green technology, our message was and is to make sure you know your stuff, so you can indentify genuine opportunities in this market, both for investing and for using.

More tricks — and 10 tips

Another trick investment scams artists use to fool victims is to link into news events, especially those that prey on public fear.

For instance, after numerous anthrax-in-the-mail scares, one con man claimed latex gloves would be the next big thing and investors duly poured their savings into a bogus manufacturing scheme. Instead, the money went to buy, among other things, luxury seats for the scammer at Dodger Stadium.

Then, there are those tricks which just play on the willingness of victims to believe there’s an opportunity to make big money that no one else knows about.

In one recent high profile-case, TV actor Kiefer Sutherland was reported to be the victim of a scam in which he was convinced to invest in a deal that promised huge profits by purchasing cattle in Mexico and reselling them in the US.

Sutherland, among others, supposedly parted with a large six figure sum but there’s no evidence that the livestock were ever bought.

So, how do you spot potential scams and distinguish frauds from legitimate investment opportunities?

FINRA offers this list of what they call “rip-off tips” – things that should put you on alert:

* Unsolicited communication such as faxes, emails, text
messages, tweets (on Twitter), and strategically placed
“opinions” in blogs and message boards.

* Seminars and webinars that use short-term incentives and
bonuses.

* Price targets or predictions of swift and exponential growth.

* The use of facts from respected news sources to bolster
claims of the size of the market for a new product or
technology.

* Mention of associations with or actions by governments that
bolster a company’s product or service.

* References to actions by well-known companies used to
justify growth of the company being touted.

* Claims that they’re the next big thing (yes!).

* Products that are only at the development stage.

* Unverifiable claims of enormous energy efficiency.

* Pressure to invest immediately.

Naturally, there are legitimate investments that use some of these tactics (such as predictions of swift or exponential growth, facts from respected news sources, well-known companies or government actions to bolster claims, and development stage products). However, it is good to be very skeptical.

Actually, FINRA has a useful “scam meter” on its website that allows you to check out your thoughts about an investment opportunity.

We certainly don’t recommend that you use this as the last word on the authenticity of an investment, but it’s worth a run-through to confirm your own suspicions.

These tips will help you avoid green scams and other investment scams — on and off the social networking sites.

Skype Scam

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th May 2010

Bookmark and Share

Hey everyone….this is a scam that needs to be exposed because many people are using SKYPE. I use Skype to touch base with my friends overseas mostly. ZL: I know this is the way that you stay in touch with you SG pals. I have already fixed my settings per their suggestions – perhaps this would be good for you to do too.

Scambusters:

In this week’s Snippets issue we feature two phone-related tricks — the Skype scam and the Yellow Pages con.

Both are the latest examples of Internet fraud: Skype for dangerous malware, advance fee scams and phishing, and Yellow Pages for phony invoices.

As we explain, Internet security software, common sense and vigilance will stop them dead in their tracks.

<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>

Skype Scam Delivers Spam and Malware

<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>

Say it loud and it sounds like the start of a tongue-twister, but “Skype scam” is far more mischievous and troublesome than that.

Skype is a software program that enables you to use the Internet to make free or cheap phone and video calls, with tens of millions of users throughout the world.

Owned by eBay, it’s the biggest of a number of outfits providing a similar service using what’s known as ”VoIP” (Voice Over Internet Protocol).

But being the biggest also makes it the most vulnerable to a VoIP scam and several have emerged as the program’s popularity has grown.

We won’t get technical, so if you want to know more about Skype, visit their website. And if you’re already a user, you need to be on the alert for a Skype scam.

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=8JUKO&m=1brMXJGFr0tWfo&b=C.osrBmiNleim9NLt4Erzw

The most common Skype scam is the use of Skype for spaham (intentionally misspelled), including the Nigerian advance payment scam and lottery scams.

See these earlier issues for more on Nigerian and lottery scams.

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=8JUKO&m=1brMXJGFr0tWfo&b=k8XSa39UKF_LFCz9G_wCGA

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=8JUKO&m=1brMXJGFr0tWfo&b=.CDJA84ScDxRBfAAyXzcFQ

Since Skype is one of those programs that, if installed, can launch by default when you start up your computer, it sits there ready and waiting whether you’re using it or not.

If, also by default, your Skype is set to show you are online, any other Skype user can send you a message. Hence the spaham.

To avoid this, you might want to change your status to ”invisible” (though this means genuine users won’t be able to “see” you either) or even stop Skype from launching when your computer starts.

Both of these can be done via Skype’s Options setting, but if you need more guidance use the program’s Help or visit the Skype website.

A more insidious Skype scam arrives on your computer via malware — viruses, Trojans and other nasty programs you unintentionally download and install on your computer by clicking on infected email attachments or visiting malicious websites.

To learn more about malware, check out this earlier Scambusters issue.

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=8JUKO&m=1brMXJGFr0tWfo&b=OKw6Aj7DoMGulDysFFOrpw

In the case of this Skype scam, the malware records your phone conversations. You might wonder who would be remotely interested in your private discussions, but you’d be surprised what information you might give away in a conversation.

Another malware-related Skype scam involves opening an email attachment claiming to be a “Skype toolbar for Outlook.”

This is a new Skype scam, first seen in March and expected to increase in incidence in the coming months. It installs spyware on your PC.

Skype is also used for phishing. In this case, a spaham message pretends to be a malware warning from “Skype Security Center.” But if you click on the link in the message — guess what — malware is exactly what you get.

To avoid these Skype scams, simply make sure you have up to date Internet security software installed. Then apply our usual rule about not opening attachments or clicking on links in messages from people you don’t know.

<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>

Yellow Pages Scam Switches to Online Directories

<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>

Let’s switch the focus now to another phone-related scam — the use of the “Yellow Pages” name to con victims.

In an earlier issue, we explained how scammers use the Yellow Pages name and the “walking fingers” logo by sidestepping trademark rules.

They send out renewal notices to small businesses by clipping out their existing directory listing and sending an official looking invoice.

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=8JUKO&m=1brMXJGFr0tWfo&b=x40G79X_1XYZhaA7jDPx1g

This scam is still going great guns. Having swept the US, it’s now tearing through Canada.

But a newer version has, like pretty much every other scam, moved online, using the non-copyrighted tag of ”Online Yellow Pages” (which is also used by legitimate directory companies in their marketing).

Again, the caller (or, in a few recent cases, a fax message) says they want to update the victim’s online listing, or they may make a phony offer to add your existing (legit) listing to an Internet directory.

The point here is that these tricksters may actually publish your details (on paper or online) but in directories that are next to useless — neither promoted nor distributed effectively.

This enables the scam artists to actually stay inside the law.

If you’re running a small business, whether you have or have not advertised in Yellow Pages type directories, be very wary about unsolicited telesales calls or official looking invoices and order forms.

Don’t place a listing order without thoroughly checking out the solicitor. And check the sender details and the fine print on any documents you receive.

Let’s face it, telephones (the “old-fashioned” sort, cell phones and the Internet variety) have been a mainstay in our lives for decades and we’d be lost without them.

But make sure you don’t lose out in a different way – by falling for a Skype scam or a Yellow Pages scam.

************

Readers: I have received these Yellow Pages calls before, and I didn’t even know they were scams. I never gave them my information. They would call asking to confirm my business information so that they could add me to their internet directory. What gave me a clue was that if they wanted me to confirm my info, then they must’ve known my info – right? So I would throw the question back and ask at the caller to confirm my info. The caller would hem and haw with some excuse, to which then I responded by saying ‘Goodbye’, and hanging up.

Zen Lill: Nice to chat with you yesterday. I agree with you, small dinner parties are so much fun. As far as Randoff and me: We’re cool – we kissed and made up. :)

A WOMAN’S WEEK AT THE GYM AKA Marie: Hey, I was about to get on your case that you already posted Wednesday, but then I saw Thursday. Too funny.

Claire: Thank you – that article that you provided the link to was so interesting and informative. It is inspiring thoughts of a conspiracy. What do you think?

Faye: You know your husband better than any other, or at least you thought – it looks like you are possibly learning something new (?) I have learned that many men who are prominent anti-gay activists are just masking their own true feelings. It really is too bad that men feel they need to go to such extremes to counter what they desire. I feel for you. A discovery of that magnitude is not and easy thing to face for you and your family.

Laura: Maybe you should have him strap his gun on, while you’re getting it on. Ya know…Give it a little stroke or two…Perhaps the presence of his gun will power up his gun. Good luck. :)

Gloria: I love what I do, so I’m always interested in new clients who want to transform or enhance their look. And if you’re blessed with a beautiful bod, style is simply a matter of taste. However my guarantee to all of my clients, regardless of body shape, is that we will together discover, define and refine their unique style, and enrich and bring focus to their best features. And I assure them it is always a delightful and enlightening experience. I look forward to your call. But I promise you, I am strictly pro. :)

Ted: I’m not sure if you were speaking to me, or Gloria, or both of us. But no matter. Sounds like you and your wife have quite the interesting and exciting life. So….you’re locals? Cool. I love the Supper Club. Although, I have to laugh about your comment to Doug. I won’t speak for him, but I’m pretty sure if we ever meet, you’re gonna have to find another butt buddy for the evening. :)

Poisoned Imported Fish: Another Reason To Buy ‘Local’

My father sent me this video. (Thanks Dad!) This is something everyone needs to see and pass along. I love going out to feast as much as the next girl, but this leaves a disgusting fishy taste in my mouth. No pun intended.

Readers: What restaurants can we count on that will serve us high quality fish?  I certainly won’t trust any restaurant in the future when it comes to enjoying fish on the menu. I don’t order meat anymore when we dine out; I guess fish will be added to the list.

And now, in light of the fact that our waters are now polluted with oil, can we even trust our local fish? And if so, from where? In my opinion, I’m not sure I can even trust buying fish at the market even when I know it’s local.

Think I am going too far? When it comes to my health, nothing else matters. I’ll err in my favor. Don’t you think this video should be on the news 24/7, warning people, shoving it in their faces until they get it? Instead we’re bombarded daily with such topics as who Tiger Woods has slept with, and updates on his mistresses and divorce.

Your thoughts or comments? Blog me.

Lloyd: Interesting. Tell us more.

Peter: That was a good one. And understandable why people would fall for that scam.

Robert: Sadly, I don’t think you are wrong. In my opinion, otws are lured into siding with whites, with promises of security, wealth, benefits, equality….whatever it takes. But they are only being used for numbers sake, for the votes, in order to get what they want. They obviously can be very persuasive. And once they do get them to vote with them, whites will drop otw’s like the proverbial hot box of rocks, when they are no longer needed.

I don’t think the term ‘creature’ is far off. The funny thing is, if whites were to rid the world of otws, they would start going after each other, based on how white one really is, and what country one came from, what religious background etc.  Crazy creatures.

And once again for those of you who are white, I am not speaking of all whites, nor all white men. That’s a nod to you Norman and Jake, and so many of my other readers. Speaking of…

Jake: “They basically fear that the privileges we have gotten used to as whites will be evened out among all the people of the United States of America.” And what is so bad about that? Doesn’t everyone deserve the same privileges as whites? Shouldn’t everyone be treated equally? These aren’t questions directed at you, but your friends who are changing.

I mean, why did your friends vote for Obama in the first place? Because they wanted to ‘look’ like they actually cared about his agenda? He has always been about fairness and equality. Now that he’s making headway, are your friends worried he actually might make some ‘real’ changes, and they will have to compete on an even playing field based on their intelligence and  talent, instead of just being ‘privileged’ based on the color of their skin?

Emily: Great visual on that one – thanks. :)

Helen: Good point. There really is no difference.

Brad: ”Where’s you pair Brad?” Are you afraid to wade through my crucible of fans and haters to comment to me on my blog? Thanks for the email address, but it leads me to believe that you’ve got man up issues.

Taliban Suspected Of Sickening Female Afghan Students

Bahameen: It doesn’t surprise me that the people of Iran, as well as other countries, are being blocked from my blog, again. This was sent to me by one of my readers who couldn’t post the other day. The topic is so important I wanted to post this article for her.

Again, the abuse that women of the world go through is just atrocious. What men will do to continue to keep women down and in their control, has reached higher levels. It is no longer about slavery and abuse, which is bad enough. Now men are, in my mind, attempting mass murder by poisoning young girls.

Taliban suspected of sickening female Afghan students

(CNN) — Afghan authorities will investigate the sudden illness of students and staff at three schools in the past week in northern Afghanistan, the Afghan Human Independent Rights Commission said on Sunday. Local doctors suggested the Taliban may be the perpetrators of possible poison attacks.

“During the last seven days three cases of poisoning [have] occurred in Kunduz Province,” said Syed Karim Talash, the director of the commission office in the province.

At least 88 girls and teachers became ill in separate cases at three girls’ schools.

The cause of the illnesses was not known, but Talash said poison gas was suspected.

“It is really big concern for us, and big concern for the family of the girls,” Talash said.

Dr. Mohammad Qasam Khamoosh, who treated girls from two schools, said “unknown gases” were responsible for the mass illnesses.

These are “terrorist activities against education in the country,” he said.

Girls were not allowed to attend school during the Taliban‘s rule. Girls’ schools have been open in the region since 2001.

Khamoosh said authorities were able to gather a sample of the gas, which has been sent off for testing.

Kunduz province has seen a drastic influx in terrorist activity, particularly by the group known as Hizb-e-Islami, led by the notorious leader Gulbudeen Hekmatyar. It’s an independent group that has increasingly worked under the Taliban umbrella in recent years.

Readers: I don’t know how these women endure. All I can say is how strong willed they must be; they have to be, to continually fight for their lives….their safety and well-being. These actions that these horrible men take do not break these women down. No, on the contrary. As much as I pray to see these atrocities come to an end, the more these women endure, the stronger these women get. The men may think they’re breaking them down, but they are not.

Bahameen: Know that you and the other girls are on my mind and you will continue to be supported. I am sure any one of you would make an amazing girlz, and I look forward to the day when you and others will join me if you chose. Be well and stay strong.

Brian: Thanks for encouraging me and my readers to take action against Goldman Sachs. If you or anyone else wants to sign Bold Progressives petition to launch a criminal investigation of Goldman along with other wall streeters, as well as calling your representatives, I’ve made it easy – click here.

Hi Helena: Nice to hear from you again (?) It is a little disconcerting isn’t it? I was just thinking today, again,  how I have to filter through so much junk to get to the good stuff, and then to have to decipher if what I think is actually good, or if someone is just trying to scam me. It is never ending; there are days where I wish e-mail wasn’t such a major tool of communication.

Anna, Peter: You both have been so committed to posting information on my blog for your peeps, I feel like it is just as much your blog as it is mine. Obviously your work has helped spread the word. I too hope that the Catholic church will be held accountable for the allegations of some of it’s clergy and those ‘butt bandits’ will pay a price. I do believe that your consistent actions in this area, (and others!) deserve some of the credit to say the least, in bringing and keeping these horrific atrocities in the light.

Hello Mike: Don’t worry.  If your persistency pays off, more power to you.

Shirley: Many people read my blog strictly for the health tips. I think this was a good one to post – Thanks.

Marie: Your diary is very amusing. Love the toothbrush bit. Can’t wait to hear about the other ‘crap’. :)

Selvig: You’re right; it is repulsive. I hope that you’ll express your views to all of your friends, Republicans included. Everyone needs to stand up and against this.

Lloyd: Your guess is as good as mine. Like many other things in life, timing is everything. Keep trying. :)

Kids in Church: Cute. On both accounts.

Justin: Thanks for your two. Literally. :)

Fred: Thanks too for your article.

Hi Sonja: I’m sure you are aware that your link wasn’t there, but here it is for those interested. :)

Daemon: Surprisingly, I am actually aware of the financial situation in Greece. I won’t pretend to understand it all, as I am no economist. I hope that the situation improves.

Maurice: All I can do is laugh at your comment; it is just so silly.  Love it -You may not be joking but I’m sure Aquatic rat fur for some men would be quite appropriate. In regards to your question: I have no idea.

John: Nice to hear from you again. No, Mr Hawking and I did not have a conversation, although I would’ve like to. So yes, it does seem more than just a coincidence doesn’t it? ‘Just noticing’…Perhaps like many others who are reading my blog and attempting to lift material, he too has been reading and getting ideas. I am not accusing him of anything, but your comment, as well as Suzy’s does make me think. Thanks. Now I am very curious to see his documentary. Hello to Connie and her women’s club. :)

Doug: Obviously they haven’t gotten a clue yet. Perhaps an Aquatic rat fur vest would help.

Readers: With all of the political powwow going on, did anyone partake in Camp OFA in your community? I went on Sunday and it was very exciting and informative. I have joined two community groups, and I’m looking forward to collaborating with other like-minded peeps in ensuring a successful election in November. And let’s have some fun too – okay?
