“If This Vote Fails…”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 19th March 2010

On my way to a seminar yesterday I was listening to the radio and Rep. Kucinich was speaking about health care and how he changed his mind and decided to support the bill. He was told that he could be the one person that would either make this happen or kill the bill. Knowing the repercussions of this bill not passing, Kucinich decided to vote for it.

I was delighted that he finally realized his fight to get a single payer was not going to happen. I love his passion and his commitment but I long ago discovered that the single payer option was never going to be agreed upon by the Republicans, even if the Democrats were all for it.  Hell, it’s tough enough as it is to get this watered down bill to even be considered by the Republicans, let alone get their votes. But I guess that is where I differ from the very left, as so many of my friends seem to peg me as.

I am not saying that one has to give up on their goals, give up on what they believe in, but at some point one has to look at the big picture, think logically, get off of the ‘personal win’ and see what is best for the American people. And what is best is passing this health care bill.

Kucinich made it very clear that he is not in favor of this bill, but he also made it clear that he realized that he was not going to get what he wanted, and that this bill is better than nothing. And getting this bill passed means that we are headed in a direction that can be improved upon. This will happen. Not passing this bill means it is dead in the water and no change will occur. Our health care system will remain the same. This can’t happen.

At some point one has to step aside, and accept what ‘is’, the is-ness of the moment. And right now, what ‘is’ on the table is a health care bill that ‘is’ better than not having one at all. If this bill doesn’t pass, you can kiss any kind of health care reform goodbye for a very long time. It must pass.

President Obama gave a speech this morning at George Mason University:

FAIRFAX, Va. — President Barack Obama described the stakes of this weekend’s health care vote in stark terms Friday, using words uttered so rarely out of the White House that they seem all but banned: “If this vote fails.”

What then? “The insurance industry will continue to run amok,” the president declared, pointing to rising rates, denials of coverage and limits on care.

With Sunday’s expected vote hanging on the support of just a handful of wavering Democrats, Obama delivered an energetic, 20-minute closing argument for the goal to which he has devoted much of his presidency and on which its future could pivot. Before an amped-up, campaign-style rally of several thousand at George Mason University, the president summoned both pragmatism and principle in an effort to sway the undecideds to his side.

He emphasized the bill’s provisions that would go into effect this year, including those banning insurers from denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, dropping coverage when a person becomes ill or imposing annual or lifetime limits on care, requiring free preventive care and allowing children to stay on parents’ policies into their 20s.

Obama said the bill, if it becomes law, will deliver “the toughest insurance reforms in history” and “the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history.”

“What we’re talking about is commonsense reform,” he said, delivering his remarks at top decibel levels and ad-libbing considerably from his prepared remarks. “You’ve been hearing a whole bunch of nonsense.”

Obama also urged lawmakers to reach beyond today’s disputes and grasp the history-making aspect of the effort.

“It’s a debate that is not only about the cost of our health care but the character of our country, it is about whether we can still meet the challenges of our time, about we still have the guts and the courage to give every citizen a chance,” Obama said.

He pointed to contentious debates decades ago over creating the now-popular Social Security and Medicare programs and enacting civil rights laws. “As messy as this process is, as frustrating as this process is, as ugly as this process can be, when we have faced such decisions in our past, this nation time and time again has chosen to extend its promise to more of its people,” Obama said.

It was the fourth outside-the-Beltway event Obama has held on health care in the past two weeks, and his last public push for the legislation that tops his domestic list. He postponed until summer an overseas trip to stay in Washington to help ensure passage and rolled his shirtsleeves up to wade into his delivery. With so much riding on the outcome – from the policy changes he wants to his own political standing – Obama spoke at top decibel levels and, rare for him, ad-libbed considerably from his prepared remarks, filling them in with folksier language and additional dire warnings.

The first-come-first-served crowd of 8,500 responded with vigor, punctuating Obama’s speech with loud cheers. A handful of people booed and interrupted, with one yelling “No socialism,” but the vast majority appeared supportive of his goal.

The president returned repeatedly to the difficult year of debate over a sweeping remake of health care that has consumed the country, and to the rampant speculation, among lawmakers and in the media, over the political ramifications of a win or loss.

“Is this more of an advantage for Democrats or Republicans? What’s it going to mean for Obama? Will his presidency be crippled? …. Or will he be the comeback kid?” he mocked. “A lot of reporting in Washington, it’s just like Sports Center. You know, it’s considered a sport and who’s up and who’s down and everybody’s keeping score and you got the teams going at it. It’s rock ‘em sock ‘em robots.”

Still, Obama acknowledged the difficult decisions facing lawmakers who haven’t yet stated their position on the legislation.

“I know this will be a tough vote. I know that everybody is counting votes right now in Washington,” he said. “We are going to do something historic this weekend. … We are going to fix health care in America.”

-Huff Po

Readers: Let’s stay on it okay?  We don’t want to know what happens “If this vote fails…”

Also, I feel I must say something in regards to the Mariana Trench, and the uncooperative countries. Have you not seen enough of what happened in Chile? My suggestion, if I have any influence on this at all, is to cooperate. I know one doesn’t like to admit being powerless, but get out of your head, put your ego aside, start caring about your people, behave, and no more ‘natural disasters’ will occur.

It really is that simple. Get on with the daily duties of running a country – there are so many more important things to be concerned with then trying to show your brawn to a bunch of aliens. It is of no use, and your people will evidently suffer from it as we have already seen. If the islands around  Guam suffer, Guam will suffer. Let’s not let Guam and others be collateral damage. Of course that is just my opinion and advice.

Juanita: LOl – cute, very cute.

Cecilia: Funny but still quite unfortunate for the fellow.

Marie: I’d be asking the same question too.

Bahameen: I know Madaline and her girls are such a support. I will keep them there as long as I can. Be well.

Carolie:  I’m usually up at 6:30 am on Fridays and posting by 7 am, but this morning I am posting later than usual.  No work today so I slept in late…so yes, I was cracking Zee’s. Move out here, and no I don’t mind :)

The Health Care March Is On: Day 6

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 16th March 2010

Bookmark and Share

I hope that all of you have been participating in some form or another these past five days to get heath care passed. If not, it’s not too late to start at Day 1 and due your duty. If so, join me in Day 6. This e-mail was sent in regards to the town I live in, but I’m sure if you’re in the loop, like I hope you are, you got one too:

Great news: This weekend’s events were a huge success. OFA volunteers all over the country helped tens of thousands of voters in key districts speak out for reform.

Phones have been ringing off the hook in Capitol Hill offices for days, but with everything on the line and so little time left, we have to bring our voice to Congress through every possible channel.

So today, OFA supporters are taking the next step in the Final March for Reform: Writing to Congress.Using our online tool, it just takes a few minutes to write and send your own letter directly to Rep. Barbara Lee.

Right now, Congress is under attack from insurance lobbyists who are trying to drown us out, so we’ve set a goal of 70 letters from Emeryville to make sure our message breaks through.

Can you help? Get started here.

In the days ahead, we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest news on
health reform as it breaks — so keep checking your email. But right now, please make sure supporters of reform in Congress continue to hear our thanks for their efforts — and that everyone hears their constituents’ overwhelming support for reform. Click here to write your letter:

Readers: This one is simple. The sample letter is there for you to just sign if you choose. But know that you will always have more of an impact, if the letter is personal. Take a few minutes and tell your representative why passing health care is important to you. Do it. Thank you.  (Oh…PS this is actually Day 7 today but when I began to write early yesterday morning, Day 6 was not available for me to see yet. If Day 6 is a done deal for you, feel free to move onto Day 7.)

Anna: I am delighted for you. I wish Obama would come and visit here. I would love to see him and Michelle up close.

Clyde: I am so sorry that your cousin got scammed. That is just a shame. I hope that my write prevents others from getting scammed too.

Glen: I only saw your first comment and didn’t see your second so I went perusing the net looking for the article too, only to realize that you posted the exact one that I found too. Thanks. Alice: Thanks too for bringing this up – this is exactly the type of thing Anonz is referring to, and I agree with both of you. We have to take action and be diligent about it to get what we want.

‘Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 14th March 2010

Bookmark and Share

There is only one thing I’m going to talk about today in terms of ‘just noticing’. I woke up this morning to quite a flurry of comments, and quite heated, I may add…and I ‘just noticed’ they were all centered around the system, and whether Anonz is a good guy or a bad guy.

Now, you can debate about the system, and I encourage that. But really, do we have to debate on whether Anonz is a good guy or not? – who cares. I’m not going to take sides, but I don’t know too many millionaires, let alone billionaires who decide to divert themselves in the devastation of Darfur, instead of frolicking and feasting in France, where most mills and bills are. Not to mention the oodles of information that we are privy to, and never would be, if it weren’t for Anonz.

So…let’s try to put our anger and egos aside and look at this logically. The fact that Anonz did give us the information to change, in my logical mind, says something. Anonz is telling us how to stop him.

Everybody’s concerned whether or not the system is good, right? Now that is something to be concerned about. Anonz gave us 3 things to do to ‘destroy the system’. He laid it out plain and simple. Here they are:

Destroy it by:

(1) Insisting that special interest groups not be allowed to lobby congress.

(2) Out law PAC’s political contributions

(3) Get your Congress to fix the opinion rendered by the bought and paid for 6 of the Supreme Court who ruled that corporations can spend as much as they want on political issues and candidates.

Readers: Why not take it on and see if they work? Either that or we can keep debating on the type of man Anonz really is. Me? I’m going to heed his words, so don’t be surprised when I start encouraging you to join me and follow his advice too.

However, let’s take a moment…let’s get real, shall we?

I write about health care and how important it is for reform to pass. And hardly anyone writes in and says, “I’m on it Michelle. I’m making phone calls today.” Instead, of debating whether or not Anonz is a paladin, let’s take all of that passion and put it somewhere productive…somewhere where we can make some real changes happen in this country.

The reality is…if people can’t even get behind health care, a simple bill and ensuring its passage, we’re going to have an extremely challenging time trying to change the entire system. However, as always, I have faith. Let’s get on it peeps…starting with health care TODAY.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. The Health Care March Is On: Day 1

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th March 2010

Bookmark and Share

Okay…It’s really Day 2, but let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Don’t know what’s going on with me these days but I’ve been a day late for about a week now. :)

I mentioned to you a few days ago that we are getting down to the wire with health care reform passing. We need to take it to the end and bring health care reform home…literally…home to the many people who are living without it. If you have health care – great, let’s make sure that everyone can have it too. Can you do that?

The House is now expected to hold its final vote as soon as one week from today, so we only have a week left to really push for reform. Big Pharma insurance-industry lobbyists are up to no good, planning a big blitz at the Ritz to block reform, while simultaneously jacking up rates by as much as 60% for small businesses and families across the country. Our premium went up 30% last year. If it goes up again, I like many may not be able to afford it. Health care will be a luxury and that is just wrong.

Here’s a note from our president:

So starting today, we’re launching an unprecedented week-long campaign sprint — our “Final March for Reform.” Each day until the vote, we’ll feature a powerful new way for OFA supporters to speak out in our communities and weigh in directly with Congress.

Today, we’ll start by spreading the facts about reform in our communities. Smears and falsehoods have clouded this debate — Congress must understand that if they pass reform, their constituents will know the truth about what we’ve finally achieved

“At this moment, we are being called upon to fulfill our duty to the citizens of this nation  and to future generations… I don’t know how passing health care will play politically, but I do know that it’s the right thing to do. It’s right for our families. It’s right for our businesses. It’s right for the United States of America.”

– PRESIDENT OBAMA

THE PRESIDENT’S PLAN FOR HEALTH REFORM

Americans across this country agree that our health care system is broken: Unaccountable insurance companies ration care, soaring premiums cripple the budgets of our businesses and families, and vital care remains out of reach for far too many. The time for change has come. President Obama’s final proposal incorporates the best ideas from both parties to put Americans in control of our own health care.

HERE’S WHAT THE PRESIDENT’S PLAN FOR HEALTH REFORM WILL DO:

PROTECT AMERICANS FROM INSURANCE COMPANY ABUSES

• You will never be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions

• You will never be hit with arbitrary premium hikes

• You will never see your coverage revoked just when you get sick or injured

• You will never face unlimited out-of-pocket expenses for your care

GUARANTEE AFFORDABLE CHOICES

• If you like your current doctor and you like your current plan, you keep them

• Uninsured individuals and small business owners will become part of a powerful negotiating pool, just like members of Congress and other federal employees, lowering prices and increasing choice

• Struggling middle-class families will receive a tax credit to make coverage even more affordable – the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history

REDUCE THE COST OF CARE FOR OUR FAMILIES, BUSINESSES

AND THE GOVERNMENT

• We’ll save billions of dollars every year by reducing waste and abuse in our current system

• We’ll save and create millions of jobs, raise wages and strengthen the economy

• We’ll cut the deficit by nearly $1 trillion over two decades

Readers: I know we all have so much to do in our lives but can you make some time for something that is so important to the people of our country?

Here’s the above info in flyer form in pdf to print out and pass out: pres-plan.php To download all of the flyers and posters to get the word out click here. You can even Facebook and Twitter notes to post, for those of you that are into social networking. And who isn’t these days? :) Spread the good word. All of the tools are here; all you need to do is give a few minutes of your time and more if you can.

As our president says, “We’re on the verge of solving a crisis that has vexed our nation for generations — and eluded the best efforts of seven previous Presidents. But our opponents will stop at nothing to distort the President’s proposal and derail our progress. It may all come down to what we do together this week. Today, it’s time to show the insurance lobbyists that no smear campaign cooked up at a posh hotel can match the power of millions of regular citizens who are ready for change and committed to the truth.”

Ranting is great for releasing; reform requires action –  do something. Thanks for caring.

About this time last year I wrote an article about an organization ‘Stop The Spray’ which is a non- profit, founded to give a voice to those opposing the spraying of harmful and senseless pesticides in the Bay Area, to rid the area of the Light Brown Apple Moth.

Well, it’s that time of year again and the spray is about to happen again, unless we do something about it. If this concerns you, as it does me, take 15 minutes today and make some phone calls and make your voice heard.  The letter below explains exactly what to do – thank you. Thanks Tracey for the info!

Dear Friends,

As you have heard, the apple moth environmental impact report has been released and the program is much the same as before, with aerial and ground spray and other chemical and environmentally disruptive treatments.

Here are 6 things you can do now to stop the spray.

We are updating our website regularly with new information on the EIR and efforts to stop the program: www.eastbay.stopthespray.org

Thanks for your support,

Nan

1. Call USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and ask him to reclassify the light brown apple moth to non quarantinable status and stop the LBAM program now.

- phone: 202-720-3631 is the main line for the USDA. Ask to leave a message for Secretary Vilsack.  OR EMAIL: agsec@usda.gov

*Talking points for calls/emails below after #2

2. Call California Department of Food and  Agriculture Secretary A.G. Kawamura and ask him NOT to certify the apple moth EIR and to stop the LBAM program now.

- phone: 916-654-0433 OR email:akawamura@cdfa.ca.gov

*Talking points for calls/emails:

-the state environmental document on the program has just come out and includes the possibility of aerial spray of large populated areas of California

-the moth has been intercepted in CA since 1984, but the state can point to only 1 questionable incident of possible apple moth damage in the past 26  years

– the program is an enormous waste of taxpayer money in hard economic times

3. Call your local city councilmember or county supervisor and ask that the city council or county board immediately send a letter to Secretary Kawamura asking him to delay certification of the Environmental Impact Report (which could be certified as soon as Thursday, Mar. 4) until public hearings on the program are held in all affected communities.

*Model letter from City of Albany attached to this email.

4.  Call your state and federal representatives and ask them to support federal reclassification of the moth and ending of the apple moth quarantines and eradication program, and tell them that the eradication program is a complete waste of taxpayer money.

* some key contacts at end of this email

5.  Call the state departments of Public Health, Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, and Pesticide Regulation and ask them to contact Agriculture Secretary Kawamura to request that he not certify the environmental impact report until the full formulas of the apple moth pesticides, including the adjuvants or so-called inerts, are disclosed (and for good measure add that you think this program is a complete waste of taxpayer money).

California Department of Public Health:   Mark Horton. Director    916- 558-1700 [ASK TO LEAVE A MESSAGE FOR DR. MARK HORTON] mark.horton@cdph.ca.gov

Department of Pesticide Regulation   Mary Ann Warmerdam, Director  916-324-1452    mwarmerdam@cdpr.ca.gov

Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment: Joan Denton, Director   (916) 322-6325    jdenton@oehha.ca.gov

6.  Call or email the office of State Assemblymember Sandré Swanson and express your appreciation for his introduction of AB 1721, the School Healthy and Safety Protection Zones Act, which would establish pesticide spray safety zones around schools across the state.  Mr. Swanson’s office needs to know BY NEXT WEEK that we support his efforts, especially from residents of his district: Oakland, Alameda, and Piedmont.

Minnie: Thank for reminding us about Kathryn Bigelow – a big congrats to her!

Lucy: Your story is so bizarre. I don’t know what else to say.

Betty: Oh…exposure is a bitch isn’t it? How many more of those that oppose will be revealed? But check this out…now the Republican lawmakers are thinking of calling for a further investigation. Did they want to further investigate Ashburn when he was recently busted? Of course not. As usual the GOP is trying to exploit the situation. They are ruthless and relentless.

Robert: Welcome back! (?) Thanks for your write.

Loni and Kelly: Thank you. :)

Anonymous: lol.

Marlene: I know your comments were not addressed to me but I have to chime in and say that I agree with your sentiments. Very well said. And thank you for sharing your personal life and experiences with us.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Peace out….

Gratefully your blog host,
