Sustainability Made Simple Series: Part 3B

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 12th October 2009

So how’s it going so far? Have you been able to incorporate some of the things that I have written about into your lives? I hope so. It really can be pretty simple with a little effort yes?  Ya know, it’s kind of like flossing, once you get into it, it becomes habit and you don’t really think about it anymore. Of course, for those of you still trying to make flossing a habit, this may be a bit more challenging.  Fortunately, you not making a habit of flossing doesn’t affect any one but you. Unfortunately, not making a habit of some of these sustainable suggestions not only affects you but the rest of the world too.  If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for the world. Okay. Enough said. Here’s the final post Sustainability Made Simple Series, and the continuation of At Home:

And as a final reminder, once again, there are several categories and each has three steps, progressing from the simplest to the most complex.

Insulation:

  1. Conduct a home energy audit. You can do it yourself online. Companies is some areas will conduct a free at-home audit; check your local listings.
  2. Replace any single-paned windows with double-paned models.
  3. Install modern, effective insulation in your home.

Electronics and Appliances:

  1. Turn off all electronics including TVs and computer when not in use.
  2. Unplug or shut off everything using power strips  - many electronics consume standby power when they are turned off but still plugged in.
  3. Purchase Energy Star appliances.

I am always so surprised when I walk into someone’s house and the television is blaring but no one is watching it. To me there is so much noise in this world, I love the opportunity for quiet. Silence is golden.

We use very little light in out house so many lighting fixtures are left unplugged until they need to be used. Now that it is fall and the light is disappearing quicker, warm up your house with candles. They are great for picking up your mood and not only does everyone look better in candlelight but it is more romantic, even if it’s just you hanging out solo :)

Water Conservation

  1. Reduce the amount you water your lawn and gardens. Water in the evening and early mornings to reduce evaporation.
  2. Install low-flow toilets or place jugs filled with water in your toilet tanks to lower the water they use per flush.
  3. Install low-flow faucets and shower heads. – they can reduce water use by up to 50%.

Lawns are passé and not very pc these days. I know lots of friends who are giving up there lawns and opting for a rock garden which is much more low maintenance and eco-friendly, not to mention, zen. We have a very eco-friendly lawn, one that only needs to be moved a few times a year and uses less water, but I’m still not happy with it. We’re slowly letting it go.

We also had low-flow dual flush toilets installed a few years ago, and I love them. We even got most of it paid for by our utility company because they use less water. Something worth checking into in your area.

I have to admit though, I like my shower head and have resisted switching to a low-flow. Although to make up for it, I turn off my shower when soaping up and shaving. For those of you that don’t like to do that, getting a low-flow would be good. Speaking of….Doug are you living up to your pledge?

Hot Water Conservation:

Lowering your hot water use means lowering both your overall water use and your energy need

  1. Take shorter showers.
  2. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water only.
  3. Turn down your hot water heater to 120 degrees F and wrap it in a thermal blanket.

Taking shorter showers is always easier during the summer than the winter. And the old saying, ‘shower with a friend..’ yeah right….From my experience, showering with ‘a friend’ has never conserved water. The way to conserve it best is to turn it off.

Purchasing

  1. When you go shopping bring your own reusable bags.
  2. Buy eco-friendly products that contain no toxic chemicals, and are produced using sustainable methods.
  3. Evaluate your needs and cut down on unnecessary purchases. Donate or sell unneeded items, and buy used items from your friends and neighbors.

To me all three of these are easy. I still can’t believe how many people don’t bring there own bags when they go grocery shopping. I am appalled at people who leave the grocery store with armloads of those horrible plastic bags filled with food. It is just unacceptable these days.

Eco-friendly products are available everywhere and they aren’t much more expensive than the toxic ones. And they are so much better for the environment and your health.

And this last one is most important. We are a consumeristic society that has to have the latest and greatest. If we keep buying the latest, the companies will always develop more, and we’ll always get tempted to buy more. The shelf life of electronics is so short lived because of our demands. I’ve written about the precious minerals in the congo. Remember, our fingers are tapping daily on devices that contributes to the plight of so many women. Be a conscious, caring buyer.

There you have it again. What do ya think? Doable yes? Now…go out and do what you can. Thanks :)

Hey Roy: Welcome to Earth! I hope that you have been enjoying yourself here. I am so curious after reading what you wrote about life on your planet. What is your government like? Do the men and women rule equally? Is there racism? Crime? Or does everyone love, live, and let live? Do you respect your environment and the plant and animal life? Are you able to traverse to all of the planets in your solar system and what are the inhabitants like on other planets? I know…lots of questions. Feel free to answer only those that you wish.

Hello Lloyd: Don’t you mean you are commenting again? Obviously you are always reading or you wouldn’t know that the aliens are back :)

Hi Ruth: I’m not sure what you found on the web but I’m looking forward to it. Try again please. It seems like you have your hands full but you seem to enjoy it. Big hugs to the little women.

Readers: It is the beginning of a new week – make it good whatever you’re doing.

Peace out.

Sustainability Made Simple Series: Part 3A

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th October 2009

How is everyone doing?  Hasn’t CAS given us some great ideas on how simple sustainability can be? Well, this is the last of the series, but since it is quite long, I’m going to break in down in two parts: 3A and 3B. I hope that you have learned as much as I have, and have managed to implement some of them into your daily life.

Here we go with part 3 of the series. It is called At Home: Choices made around the home have a huge impact on the natural world. You can quickly lower your impact by adopting some of the changes below. Once again, there are several categories and each of them has three steps, progressing from the simplest to the most complex.

Part 3A:

Waste

  1. Purchase products with less packaging.*
  2. Recycle bottles, cans, plastic, paper, and old electronics. Compost food waste.
  3. If your local government has no curbside recycling and composting program, lobby them to develop one.

*Hint: if you’re buying fresh, you won’t need to worry about too much packaging. Most parts of California have great recycling and composting programs. If you live in a state or city that doesn’t, here’s where the saying, ‘politics is a daily job’ comes in :)

Energy

  1. Enroll in a green power or similar environmental program from your utility provider.
  2. Lobby your elected representatives to support legislation that limits greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Have solar panel or wind power installed.

Lighting

  1. Turn off all unnecessary lights.
  2. Switch all your bulbs to compact fluorescent (CFLs). Make sure to dispose if CFLs properly because they contain mercury and should not go into landfills.
  3. Install motion sensor lights that automatically switch off.

To me, all three of the above are so easy and totally doable.

Home Heating and Cooling

  1. Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees F in the summer and 68 F in the winter.
  2. Turn down heat or air conditioning when you are sleeping or not at home.
  3. Install a programmable thermostat to ensure your home’s temperature is optimal for your comfort and for the environment.

There you have it again. What do ya think? Doable yes? Now…go out and do what you can. Thanks :)

Zen Lill: Thanks for clarifying, however, I wasn’t necessarily speaking to you or Al; just the making a general point that the general vibe is different now, than it was before the election. The optimistic attitude…the hope….it has faded a bit.

I think so many people are expecting so much. I think we’re desperate for change. People need to realize that we can make change happen, as long as we keep the politics of the day before us – as Sharon said….and in my mind, “Do something”.

This country is pretty messed up to for things to change quickly. We need to realize that it took time to get the country in the state that it is, and it will take time to clean it up. It certainly seems to be a lot easier to mess things up, than to fix them.

Anna & Peter:  Sometimes things happen that look bad on the onset, but if all was revealed, one might sigh and say, ‘We should be thanking our lucky stars.” This is one of those times. Hafa Adai.

Ah….Vera: Now you really don’t expect me to tell you now do you? :)

Evelyn:  I need to leave too early this morning to read your post, but it looks very interesting and I’ll read it later on today. Thanks for sharing.

6:41 AM: I am posting early as I have a seminar to attend to. I just briefed the comments this morning – wow too many to handle this early. But I did catch that our president won the Nobel Peace Prize – Googled it quickly for a fast read- thanks for the heads up readers!  You are always so on top of the current! I am so delighted by the news – it has made my day! Have a good one!

Gotta run….

Politics Is A Daily Job

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 8th October 2009

Good morning.

Mai Ling: It is my understanding that we are now clear on this matter.  But yes, I would appreciate you re-examining your feelings towards humans.

Sharon: You need not worry. Politics will always be an area of conversation on my blog. I did not start this blog thinking it was going to go politico, but it has and I am grateful that it has. I am not tired of politics but frustrated of the direction that politics has taken. And that is no fault, but our own. I agree with you  in your statement saying that those who wish to manipulate and control us NEVER get tired of politics. Our complacency in this world is what lead us to be in the position that we are in now.

Quite honestly, I am disappointed in many of the people who were so excited, who were so willing to put so much time getting Obama in the white house, and have now taken a break, as if to say, “We voted him in, now it’s time for him to do his job.” Politics and striving for what we want is a daily job…it is just the beginning of creating the changes that we fought so hard for when we were trying to get him elected.

If we relax on our laurels,  we could possibly end up like the people in your country, and saying the words, “If no one in my  family has been maimed or killed,  then it is a good day.” People in America can’t even fathom saying those words. The worst that most can think, is that they will be jobless and homeless, not living in fear of being killed. But if our country continues in the direction that it is….if our country continues to spiral toward a worse economic disaster, we just might be saying those words. I don’t want to be saying those words.

Hey, I never thought our country would be in the state that it is in, but it is. And it could just as easily get a lot worse if we don’t band together and make politics a conscious part of our daily lives. If you don’t like the direction that politics is going, then participate and change it. No one said it was going to be easy.

Evelyn: Thanks for the heads up on the Swine Flu – great information. I have put the items on my shopping list. And thanks for your article too Ruth. There are many moms out there reading so I’m sure they will find your article interesting. Oh and love the exchange of words between you too – sounds like me and my mom. :)

N: You are correct. The interest of the people is not in the forefront of their minds or they would not be so opposing. It is disturbing to say the least, and not surprising at all.

I don’t know which ‘initial’ I am speaking to, or if what I’m going to say is even relevant to your comments, but I am really tired right now, and I really don’t care, so I’ll just speak what’s on my mind, and what’s been on my mind….and rant….of spending money on war, the deficit, not spending money on health care….blah, blah, blah….

The same people, who rant their protestations about health care reform…where were you when we were spending billions in the Iraq war? Where were you when the fear mongers were spending those same billions, all in the name of safety and protection for the U.S. citizens? It was okay to create such debt then.

But now?….when so many citizens are losing their health insurance, when so many citizens are denied coverage, when so many citizens are having to sell everything they own in order to care for a sick, loved one….where is the love for the U.S. citizens now?

Why are you against spending billions in the name of safety and protection now? More than anything citizens need a roof over their heads for safety, and protection from sickness and disease.  What is more important than a nation with healthy, strong citizens? So much for love thy neighbor.

And speaking of the media…why doesn’t the media ever point this out?

It makes me think, that if fear is bred by enough people, such as the actions of our past administration, and the controlled media, and the citizens of our nation feel personally threatened as a whole, such as the threat of terrorism, people will band together and do something about it.

And contrary to that, if people refuse to look past their own needs or the needs of their families, if people just don’t care about the livelihood and health of others, as many stated in that DC tea party video I posted awhile ago…if those same people aren’t personally going to be affected, then they will turn a blind eye, and do nothing to protect their neighbor. Like I said, “Where’s the love?” (sigh…)

Vera: Nice try, but you don’t fool me. You are not an Earthling girl.

Readers: Comments? Rants? Chitchat? Blog it baby.

Now, I’m going to eat a giant muffin and see how soon I can get out of my D-cup….and I am a female. :)

Peace out…

michelle

Chris Rock On Roman Polanski

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th October 2009

I’m taking a break on my ‘sustainable series’ today because my attention got grabbed again over the hot topic of Polanski. In case you didn’t see Chris Rock on Jay Leno’s new show last Thursday night, click here for the clip. Unfortunately I couldn’t copy it from the linked site. So I searched youtube. I found it, but when I tried to play it, this notice came up: “This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions.” Ok, this video was shot in our country but now we can’t copy it and view it – crazy.  Anyway, it’s a short clip and worth the watch – Right on Chris!

Here’s the article too if you’re interested:

Last night on Jay Leno‘s new show, Chris Rock put on blast some of the attitudes surrounding director Roman Polanski, ripping into the rhetorical dances being done around what Polanski actually did – which was rape a thirteen year old.

The conversation around Roman Polanski has been a hard one to follow. Part of it is annoyance – it is unnerving to see how certain celebrities fall under scrutiny for consorting with minors and others can make it seem like an unfortunate lapse in judgment.

Jill at Feministe points out how many actors seem to feel that this is just peachy:

“What I don’t understand is why so many people are signing this petition. On the most basic level, it’s especially disappointing when the signatories are people whose work I like and respect. Pedro Almodovar. Wes Anderson. Natalie Portman. Kristin Scott Thomas. Darren Aronofsky. Diane von Furstenberg. Julian Schnabel. Martin Scorsese. Tilda Swinton. Gael Garcia Bernal (there goes my biggest crush). Penelope Cruz.”

But they are, after all, just entertainers. It’s absolutely heartbreaking when the support comes from someone who should really know better – like the founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation.

“My personal thoughts are let the guy go,” said Peg Yorkin, founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation. “It’s bad a person was raped. But that was so many years ago. The guy has been through so much in his life. It’s crazy to arrest him now. Let it go. The government could spend its money on other things.”

Lauren over at Feministe brings her experience into the narratives around Polanski, noting:

“Rape is not the only assault. Around rape is a large segment of the population that questions the victim, a culture that looks down on victims for allowing themselves to be victimized, or keep them victimized, questions about the victim’s credibility, questions about the legacy of rape and how bad it is, because how bad is rape really? Rape, because various levels and forms of sexual assault are systemic and pervasive across all societies, exists alongside one’s experiences of unwanted touching, wanted touching, sexual objectification, sexual desire, sexual harassment, incest, love, leering eyes, cat calls, roaming hands, consent, confusion, tits, vagina, rectum, penis, mouth, rape and not-rape, all of it loaded, all of it veering at rape’s ugly legacy, co-mingling, the legacy that tells us to be more careful, to dress more conservatively, to BE BETTER AT BEING VULNERABLE, or BE MORE POWERFUL, or BE MORE FEARFUL, or GET OVER IT ALREADY. Rape leaks into healthy, consensual experiences. It lingers. It pervades.”

Roman Polanski initiated sexual contact with someone he knew to be underage, persisted after she said no, pled guilty to unlawful intercourse with a minor, and fled the country when he feared he would go to prison anyway.

What’s so disturbing about the articles isn’t that people are claiming our legal system is flawed. It’s that people – be they in Hollywood or your average citizen – are grasping for all kinds of ways to twist this back on the victim and to exonerate Polanski by denying this crime ever happened. So you want him to walk on a technicality? Fine. Admit that! But why are we denying that the rape ever happened?

It did happen.

Polanski admitted as such. So are people so invested in the idea that if we pretend it isn’t “rape-rape” then the matter will be resolved?

As Rock says at the end of the clip: “The United States, we want to capture Osama Bin Laden, and murder him. We don’t want to rape him – that would be barbaric!”

Rape is a barbaric act.

And I’m amazed it took a comedian to say it outright.

-Latoya Peterson

Can you believe that the head of the Feminist Majority Foundation, Peg Yorkin, says to ‘let it go.’? I am shocked by the amount of women who have been supporting Polanski. What is wrong with these women? I am so disappointed.

On an up note, don’t you just love Rock’s final words though?!

Readers: Thoughts? Blog me.

Hey Zen Lill:  Time has not been expanding much for me either, and I have barely had any time to exercise at all. Getting this details of this new venture together has been taking up a lot of time but then love is in the details and I am such a detailed person. By the way, I got your joke – too funny!

Mai Ling: How does an earthling girl get discovered with a commander like Madaline commanding her? Believe me, as Al so appropriately pointed out, you were once a ‘primitive’, and obviously not too long ago. It’s clear, you, or whoever got discovered, haven’t mastered surreptitiousness.

Remember this, if you decide to retaliate with an earthquake, it will most likely be the less fortunate of the ‘primitives’ who will undoubtedly suffer, not the ones behind shooting the rockets this Friday. And the ones behind the rockets don’t necessarily care about the livelihood of the less fortunate ‘primitives’.

My readers and I quite aware that our weather can be controlled, as we have been informed many times. And I am sure that the ‘primitives’ that you intend to teach are aware too. This is not the first time humans have tried to make a statement, and we know it won’t be the last.  And you are well aware, as I am, that if push ever came to shove, we would be as easy to exterminate as a human foot on an ant hill:  completely defenseless.

Know this, I am tired of the destruction on our planet. The economic climate in this world is fucked up enough, and another disastrous earthquake leaving more of the ‘primitives’ homeless and jobless, will not make this Girl happy.

Earth is a cattle planet to say the least, but it is still our home. You know Earth…the place you used to live. Try not to be an insensitive, expanded brain, no-longer-a-primitive-myself, earthling.

Mai Ling, what can I say? You got me on a morning where I have little tolerance for ego-talk. Try to be safe out there and not get into any trouble.

Cecil: You’re only a creep if you excepted the blow job. She was probably testing you to see if you really loved her by offering herself to you, or if you were just like any other man. If you really loved her you would’ve set her up out of the care and love for her, and nothing more. Did you, or were just like any other man who wanted to get a good blow job? And shame on your brother for being a man who shares the intimate details of his relationship.

Al: I thought your questions and comments in regards to ZL’s joke were even funnier than the joke.

Doug: There is no reasoning with women like Laura. She accepts her place in society as second class and kisses ass to those white men that control her. She would be a good match for George.

Sustainability Made Simple Series: Part 2

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th October 2009

Good morning. I’m hoping that you’re participating in helping to sustain our place here on our beloved Earth, by making a habit of at least a few of the sustainable steps from yesterday’s post.  Want more? You’re gonna get more.

Here we go with Part 2 of the series. It is called On The Menu: What you choose to eat and drink affects your health and the environment. Sustainable food choices may seem complicated, but by following some of these suggestions, you’ll lead a healthier, greener life.  Again, In each of the series there are several categories and each has three steps, progressing from the simplest to the most complex.

Meat and Dairy

Industrial farming of livestock is very energy-intensive, and is responsible for more global warming emissions than the entire transportation industry.

  1. Look for free-range, grass-fed beef and organic dairy products.
  2. Eat less beef by substituting chicken or seafood – It’s the easiest and fastest way to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Eat more vegetarian meals.

I have to say a little bit about the above because I have been a vegetarian a few times in my life. As much as I love veggies and wish I could be a full time vegetarian , we are carnivores, and simply put, my body needs meat. However, I do not eat meat every day.  And the free-range, grass-fed meat that we do eat, is bought directly from a farm. Now I know that there are probably people out there that can not buy from a farm or at least think they can’t. It is a little bit pricier but not by much, and worth investigating for your health and the planet.

If buying directly from a farm is just not possible, you can buy free-range grass-fed at the market.  If you’re used to eating meat a few times a week, can you reduce your intake to once a week and buy free-range grass-fed? You can do the same with chicken and seafood if you’re not a big beef eater. Purchase seafood that has been harvested sustainably from the ocean. (A good resource is the Seafood Made Simple card. I will be blogging about this at the end of the series) We’re talking quality over quantity here. Better for you; better for the environment.

As far eating more vegetarian meals, Health info has been posting some great info in terms of vegetarian meals and ZL has been so kind to give out her recipes too. Doug started an organic garden this past summer and most of the veggies we eat are from our garden. Plant your own organic garden. Or buy CSA. (more about this below) It is is simpler than you think and much less expensive than buying organic at the grocery store. Once again, better for you and better for the environment.

Baby steps. If everyone does a little we can have a huge impact.  That’s all I’m asking.

Shopping

  1. Cut down on processed foods.
  2. Look for local, seasonal, organic foods.
  3. Subscribe to a community supported agricultural program (CSA program)  – CSA members receive regular baskets of organic produce from a local farmer, in return for helping to fund the farm.

Again, I have a bit more to say here. I know processed foods are quick and easier but they certainly are not better for you, or less expensive in the big picture. For those of you on a tight budget, in the long run you are paying way more than just making something yourself from fresh ingredients.  Try to get into the habit of experimenting with your cooking instead of opening a box or a can.

And remember, buying local, organic veggies is not much more money especially if you’re cutting down in the meat department. And if money is still an issue, as I mentioned above, try planting a small organic garden. Seeds and small starters are cheap. You don’t need much space for a few seasonal veggies.

It is not only fun to pick and eat veggies that you have grown, but they are so much more delicious than store bought. The entire process is very relaxing and stress relieving.  Ask Doug; he is always tinkering in the garden, and it is so rewarding to see him bringing in all of these colorful, delicious, fresh, and yes, basically FREE food.

Eating Out

  1. Choose local restaurants over chains. They are more likely to operate sustainably.
  2. Patronize those local restaurants which source local, seasonal and organic ingredients.
  3. Bring your own reusable take-out containers from home.

I know the above is not talking about fast food chains as to me it is a given not to support those types of establishments. However, I have to say something here, even if CAS doesn’t. I know fast food is cheap, but readers the affects that these types of food chains have not only on the environment but on our bodies is just not worth the drive-thru. Please stay clear of the biggies – you know who they are in your neighborhood.

In California finding good restaurants that practice sustainable methods is pretty easy if one does a little research. In other states it may be more difficult, but it is worth you asking questions. I think tip number 3 is easy to do where ever you are. We always keep reusable grocery bags and take-out containers from home in the trunk of our car. If everyone did this it would be amazing just how much we would reduce paper and those horrible styrofoam containers from polluting our planet.

In Oakland styrofoam take-out containers were banned about a year ago, but we still bring our own take-out containers even though what they hand out is recycled paper take-outs. It still helps by bringing your own no matter what. All I can add here is reuse, reuse, reuse. Pretend you’re on a deserted island. If all you had was a few things, you would not throw them out after one use;  you would reuse them over and over again until they could be used no more. Simple.

Okay, that’s it for Part 2 of the series. What do ya think? Doable yes? Now…go out and do what you can. Thanks :)

**************

Zen Lill: Thank you. I wish I could walk to the store as you suggest. I would if it wasn’t far, but I really enjoy biking. Especially with my bike.  If I can find a pic I will post my bike - It is a fun ride.

Ruth: Happy that you liked my post. You posted a great article too – thanks. I don’t buy many packaged foods but I am a big label reader when I do buy something in a box or can.  I really try to avoid sugar in foods because I have  sweet tooth for ice cream and *Bakesale Betty Ginger cookies. So I save myself from eating sugars in food that I don’t want, so that I can indulge in the sweets with sugar that I do love.  It’s all a matter of being aware and balancing.

Happy to hear that your big influence, over low or no sugar in the girls diets, is working. Give them all a big hug and a hello.

*FYI: According to the FTC, new guidelines will go into effect on December 1st. Bloggers now need to let their readers know how they are connected to any product or service that they tout. If they have received any product or services from a business for free, they must state this in their article. So that being said, no Bakesale Betty have not sent me any free cookies for a mention on my blog.  I love the cookies from Bakesale Betty. I buy them quite frequently and yes I do get a free cookie every now and then, but then so does everyone else waiting in line to purchase their treats.

Anna: Hafa Adai. It’s nice to step away from dire news and have a little fun. You know what they say, “All work and no play….” The concert sounded like fun – were you able to attend?

Readers: I was just informed that there is not a place to add a comment. I am not sure what is going on, but I am on it to fix it. Sorry for the glitch.

Got to run….
