Simple Basic Needs…We All Deserve Them

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 19th June 2009

I was beat last night when I got home from work @ 7. I had such little energy to make myself some dinner and then I barely ate it, as all I wanted to do was shower and go to bed. Too tired to shower, I checked in here, and then went straight to bed.

This morning I woke up, took a hot shower, and perused the web.  I came across an article: 12 Of The Most Iconic Photographs Ever Taken. The one that I posted of the lynching  a few days ago was one of them. Many I had seen before, and a few I never had.  The one I posted below is in the latter category.

This example of emotive imagery is of child in Uganda holding hands with a missionary. The stark contrast between the two people serves as a reminder of the gulf in wealth between developed and developing countries. Mike Wells, the photographer, took this picture to show the extent of starvation in Africa. He took it for a magazine, and when they went 5 months without printing it, he decided to enter it into a competition. However, Wells has stated that he is against winning a compeition with a picture of a starving boy.

I am not naive about the impoverishment in Third World countries; I have traveled to quite a few.  But no matter how many times I see people living under such conditions, I feel as if it is my first. My heart feels heavy and I am reminded just how blessed I am.  And then my mind shifts and I start to think of how I can’t believe that I am living in such a modern world, that can’t seem to take care of all of its people. (I won’t even go there today in regards to some people who could care less about taking care of some of the people we share this planet with.)

I almost posted the Pulitzer Prize photo of the small child from Uganda who is alone and starving, barely moving, while a vulture patiently stocks him. But I just didn’t want to go there. it makes me feel hopeless and I don’t want to feel that way. This photo above shows care and hope, and these days, for me, that is what it is all about.

So, yeah, I went to bed slightly hungry last night, but nothing I couldn’t live with, or I would’ve simply ate more. But too tired to eat, I undressed and crawled into a warm and comfy bed. There was no doubt in my mind that when I woke up in the morning, I would always have food in my plate. The thought never even enters my mind that I wouldn’t.

And, then I find this photo and it touches me….it evokes thoughts of….”We are such a rich society with so many resources. Why is it that every child, every person in this world can not feel the same way as I do? Why can they not know that when they wake up, there will be food for them to eat? Why do they find that they can not rely on the simple, basic needs in life such as food, water, shelter, and clothing?” Simple, basic needs…we all deserve them.

Readers: What does this photo bring up for you?

~~~~~~~~~
Zen Lill: You shocked me about what you said about your mother. Mothers can say shocking things. I know; my mother has let a few slip but I love her anyway.
Anna:  You sent me some quarters? When did you send them? How sweet of you! I am so delighted. I have not been to my PO Box in weeks but I will look out for them. I am excited – thank you! Oh and about that Interesting write. I have to admit, I write like that all of the time and I don’t consider myself uneducated or mixed up and unpredictable. Although I don’t see much wrong with a little unpredictability every once in a while – surprise is good. I actually think the technique of my script is creative and whimsical….a bit messy I’ll admit. I never was one to have beautiful handwriting. Hi Peter!  Got to run..
Yeah, it’s Friday and it’s a beautiful day. Go out and enjoy it!
My Brief Life As A Woman
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th June 2009
I just love this story.  Many many months ago I was going to write an article ‘strictly for women’. Not that men couldn’t read it…I’m just not sure that they would want to. The topic was going to be ‘The Monthly P’.  You know what I’m talking about so I don’t need to spell it out. And believe me, I was gonna get down and bloody with the oh-so-intimate details. There was going to be no tempering here….as usual :)  And hey, if men read it which I think they would, they might’ve even learned something.  But…I just never got around to writing that article. ( yet :)
So then I came across this article: My Brief Life As A Woman. Written by Dana Jennings of the New York Times. Unfortunately he had prostate cancer.  His experiences and aside from the hardships of having cancer, were very interesting and enlightening. Check it out:
As my wife and I sat on the couch one night this past winter, reading and half-watching the inevitable HGTV, I started sweating hard and my face got so fevered and flushed that I felt as if I were peering into an oven.
I turned to Deb and said, “Man, I’m having a wicked hot flash.” And she said, “Me, too.” Then we laughed. You laugh a lot — unless your hormones are making you cry — when you’re having menopause with your wife.
I was in the middle of treatment for an aggressive case of prostate cancer last winter, and it included a six-month course of hormone therapy. My Lupron shots suppressed testosterone, which is the fuel for prostate cancer.
When your testosterone is being throttled, there are bound to be side effects. So, with the help of Lupron, I spent a few months aboard the Good Ship Menopause with all the physical baggage that entails. It’s a trip that most men don’t expect to take.
The side effect that surprised me most were the hot flashes — not that I got them, I was expecting that, but by how intense they were. They often woke me in the middle of the night and made me sweat so much that I drenched the sheets. In midwinter I’d walk our miniature poodle, Bijou, wearing shorts and a T-shirt. I sometimes felt as if Deb could fry eggs on my chest. (It’s also a bit disconcerting when your hot flashes are fiercer than your wife’s.)
When it comes to hot flashes, ladies, I salute you. After my brief dalliance with that hormonal phenomenon, it seems to me it’s an under-reported condition. And it’s certainly under-represented in the arts. Where are the great hot flash novels or movies? How come there’s not a Web site or magazine called “Hot Flash Monthly”?
Hand in hand with the hot flashes came the food cravings. I lusted after Cheetos and Peanut Butter M&M’s, maple-walnut milkshakes, and spaghetti and meatballs buried in a blizzard of Parmesan. Isn’t it funny how cravings very rarely involve tofu, bean curd or omega-3 oils?
Then there was the weight issue. During the six months I was on Lupron I gained about 25 pounds. That was partly a byproduct of the cravings, but it also stemmed from the hormonal changes triggered in my body.
And I hated it, hated it, hated it. I had never had to worry about my weight, and I began to understand why media aimed at women and girls obsess over weight so much. It was strange and unsettling not to be able to tell my body, “No,” when it wanted to wolf down a fistful of Doritos slathered with scallion cream cheese.
When I wasn’t devouring a king-size Italian sub or smoldering from a hot flash, it seemed that I was crying. The tears would usually pour down when I got ambushed by some old tune: “Sweet Baby James” and “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor, “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be” by Carly Simon and, yes, “It’s My Party” by Lesley Gore. Not only was I temporarily menopausal, but it appeared that I was also turning into a teenage girl from the early 1970s.
There were other side effects, too, like headaches and fatigue. But when I started drinking Diet Coke for the first time in my life, my son Owen couldn’t take it anymore. He said, “Dad, are you turning into a chick?”
So, what else did I learn during my six months of hormone therapy?
Even though I only got to spend a brief time on the outer precincts of menopause, it did confirm my lifelong sense that the world of women is hormonal and mysterious, and that we men don’t have the semblance of a clue.
And, guys, when your significant female other bursts into tears at the drop of a dinner plate or turns on you like a rabid pit bull — whether she’s pregnant, having her period or in the throes of menopause — believe her when she blames it on the hormones.
One more thing. I don’t really know whether menopause likes company — you’d have to ask my wife that — but I do know that it really, really likes HGTV and Peanut Butter M&M’s.
~~~~~~~~

Thankfully, I am not at the menopausal age yet and I am not looking forward to it. My grandmother never had the hot flashes and my mother still has them. I am hoping that I will take after my grandmother and be done with it.

But I hope for you men out there that you got a little peek (maybe too much of a peek?) into just a tiny segment of what some women can go through, and you can understand it just a little bit more.

Comments? blog me.

Note:  I was not able to get into the administrative level of my blog nor even view the home page all morning. This happened yesterday too, and I’m not sure what is going on. I enjoy blogging in the morning as I enjoy reading the comments when I wake up fresh , which inspires my daily write. But perhaps if this keeps happening, I may have to resort to writing in the evening and doing an automatic post should I not be able to get in again in the morning.  Which is the reason why I am blogging late.

Anyways….enough of that. I need to get to work so I will reserve any comments that I have to the readers from yesterday….until tomorrow….

Get Lushed

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 5th June 2009

Helllooo….

Ah..It’s Friday. I am so excited the weekend is here.

I want to share something with you. I have come across a few great earth friendly products lately…well at least they seem pretty cool. And I decided to try my darnedest to get the word out to my readers. Any attempt to make this world a better place. And no I’m not connected to any of them in any way. (wish I was :) But what better way to get the word out but to blog about it?

So…I’m sure many of you were as upset as I was over the toxic soup that I wrote about a few days ago. I try to only use products that use recyclable plastics but that really doesn’t cut out the plastic in our lives.

Here’s one new solution that does. This company whose product is usually only found in plastic containers decided to lay off the bottle completely, and guess what they sell? Shampoo.

Wha’at? How does one sell shampoo without a bottle? The shampoo is called Lush (I just love that word…lush greenery, lush ripe peach…etc.), and it comes in a bar that looks like soap but is equivalent to three 8-oz of shampoo bottles.  Depending how much you wash your hair this little ‘ol bar will last you about 6 months, and is not much more than what you pay for your shampoo now…less than 10 bucks.

By using LUSH, not only will you prevent plastic waste, but you will avoid harmful chemicals. Lush contains none of those sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates. Good for the environment; good for you. And for you vegans out there – they even have a bar or two for you. I like it already and I haven’t even tried it (yet). You just wet the bar and run it across your hair a few times and lather up. Simple yes?

There are quite a few ‘flavors’ but these two sound pretty tempting: Karma Komba smells like patchouli (ah…love that scent – high school memories once again :) and citrus, and claims to put the bounce back into your hair. Gentil Lentil contains legumes (no surprise with a name like that), and claims to be a great detangler.

The company also says that you can use the bar to wash your face and body and even your clothes while you’re away on vacation. (ohh Dr. Bronner, you have some competition). I’m pretty picky about what I put on this face and bod but hey, I’ll try it on my hair. All in the goal of preserving this planet. :)

Anyone else have a cool product you want to share – blog me baby.

Peace out peeps….

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

President Obama’s Speech In Cairo

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 4th June 2009

Good morning everyone.

e pluribus unum –  out of many, one

I got up early to watch president Obama’s full speech this morning – I’m sure many of you have watched it already. To me his thoughts always came full circle to these words above.

Obama talk of bringing us all together as world citizens and embracing our differences.  He talks of our common aspirations that need to be stronger than our fears and challenges. He says let’s not be prisoners of the past but become partners, and move forward in the future.

What I love is how he understands each and every country he speaks of….how he steps into the lives of all of those around us by recognizing we all have a past and we all have present challenges. He acknowledges the conflicts and the viewpoints of each side. And yet, in spite of it all, we all have a responsibility to join together, and not be bound by the past.

He speaks of us, all of us, as world citizens.

e pluribus unum –  out of many, one

Obama’s entire speech is honest and moving and inspiring. And it all comes down to this:

All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort – a sustained effort – to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.

It is easier to start wars than to end them. It is easier to blame others than to look inward; to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. But we should choose the right path, not just the easy path. There is also one rule that lies at the heart of every religion – that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. This truth transcends nations and peoples – a belief that isn’t new; that isn’t black or white or brown; that isn’t Christian, or Muslim or Jew. It’s a belief that pulsed in the cradle of civilization, and that still beats in the heart of billions. It’s a faith in other people, and it’s what brought me here today.

We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning, keeping in mind what has been written.

The Holy Koran tells us, “O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.”

The Talmud tells us: “The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.”

The Holy Bible tells us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God’s vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth. Thank you. And may God’s peace be upon you.

The above it just the ending of his brilliant speech. I urge you to listen to it in its entirety. I decided to post it here for those of you who haven’t seen it yet. It is almost an hour long but so well worth the time. Grab a cup of joe and get ready to be inspired and proud.

~~~~~~~~~
Al & Zen Lill:  Thank you.
Dalia and Anjali, Anonymous: I loved reading your comments. It sounds like his speech will be a memorable day for the both of you as well as the many who watched or listened to him. I thought his speech was one of his best. I felt for the first time that countries around the world have a chance of coming together and doing something great via our common interests and goals.
Alyah:  I do feel that Obama is a very fair man, and I trust that he has everyone’s best interest in mind. Now we as world citizens need to heed his advice and make huge efforts in coming together peacefully. I’m all for it – how about you?
Hullanta: I think many see him as the hope of the world. I do. But as it is written: It takes all of us. But what better inspiration can you have than president Obama?
Robert: Great news! Oohh…I love surprises. Let’s hope the surprise is for me and not North Korea. Keep us posted on the girls please – Thank you.
And on that happy note, I am siging off.
Let’s show Obama how much ‘peace & love’ we have to ‘live & give’.
Toxic Soup Of Refuse
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 3rd June 2009
Have you been reading my mind Al?
Today’s article is the continuation of yesterday’s write and the subject is just that: This huge monstrosity of plastic debris twice the size of Texas that is created from six million tonnes of discarded plastic! When I read the article I was flabbergasted. How could we have such a major disruption in our ecosystem and not have it be on the news every night.  Thankfully, it was on Oprah, which I didn’t see, but everyone needs to be aware just how bad plastic is, and in my mind, taking over our beloved planet. More has to be done to stop this ever growing plastic island that is floating in the middle of the North Pacific.
And you’re right Al. Not only about the food that we consume, but about our medical system. Every time I give blood, I look around at all of the plastic being used and many of it just once and thrown away. I always have visions of that movie ‘Sex, Lives and Videotapes’, where the actor Andie McDowell is talking to her therapist and her biggest concern is where all of the garbage is going. I’m like her. I think about that same thing all of the time.
Anyways, back to subject: The floating isle of debris….
The toxic soup of refuse was discovered in 1997 when Charles Moore, an oceanographer, decided to travel through the centre of the North Pacific gyre (a vortex or circular ocean current). Navigators usually avoid oceanic gyres because persistent high-pressure systems — also known as the doldrums — lack the winds and currents to benefit sailors.
Mr Moore found bottle caps, plastic bags and polystyrene floating with tiny plastic chips. Worn down by sunlight and waves, discarded plastic disintegrates into smaller pieces. Suspended under the surface, these tiny fragments are invisible to ships and satellites trying to map the plastic continent, but in subsequent trawls Mr Moore discovered that the chips outnumbered plankton by six to one.
Is your jaw dropping? Are your eyes welling up with tears? Mine are. Read on…there’s more that will break your heart.
The damage caused by these tiny fragments is more insidious than strangulation, entrapment and choking by larger plastic refuse. The fragments act as sponges for heavy metals and pollutants until mistaken for food by small fish. The toxins then become more concentrated as they move up the food chain through larger fish, birds and marine mammals.
“You can buy certified organic farm produce, but no fishmonger on earth can sell you a certified organic wild-caught fish. This is our legacy,” said Mr Moore.
Because of their tiny size and the scale of the problem, he believes that nothing can be solved at sea. “Trying to clean up the Pacific gyre would bankrupt any country and kill wildlife in the nets as it went.”
We’ve been told to eat wild caught fish and that farmed fish is not as good because the farmed fish don’t have or build up the natural resistances to the environment that wild fish have. But what wild fish can stave off the toxic soup they’re swimming in and the heavy metals and pollutants that they are mistakenly eating? This saddens me to no end.
This month 151ft brigantine Kaisei (Japanese for Planet Ocean) will unfurl its sails in San Francisco to try to prove Mr Moore wrong. Project Kaisei’s flagship will be joined by a decommissioned fishing trawler armed with specialised nets. The goal is for the scientists and conservationists on the expedition to retrieve and recycle this plastic disaster. Is it possible and will retrieval do any good? Once again, we are dealing with the problem and not much is being done to prevent an even bigger island from being created from our throw-away plastic bottles and containers.
Here is the rest of the article:
“The trick is collecting the plastic while minimising the catch of sea life. We can’t catch the tiny pieces. But the net benefit of getting the rest out is very likely to be better than leaving it in,” says Doug Woodring, the leader of the project.
With a crew of 30, the expedition, supported by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Brita, the water company, will use unmanned aircraft and robotic surface explorers to map the extent and depth of the plastic continent while collecting 40 tonnes of the refuse for trial recycling.
“We have a few technologies that can turn thin plastics into diesel fuel. Other technologies are much more hardcore, to deal with the hard plastics,” says Mr Woodring, who hopes to run his vessels on the recycled fuel.
Plastics bags, food wrappers and containers are the second and third most common items in marine debris around the world, according to the Ocean Conservancy, which is based in Washington. The proportion of tiny fragments, known as mermaid’s tears, are less easily quantified.
The UN’s environmental programme estimates that 18,000 pieces of plastic have ended up in every square kilometre of the sea, totalling more than 100 million tonnes. The North Pacific gyre — officially called the northern subtropical convergence zone — is thought to contain the biggest concentration. Ideal conditions for shifting slicks of plastic also exist in the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the North and South Atlantic, but no research vessel has investigated those areas. If this exploratory mission is successful, a bigger fleet will depart in 2010.
Mr Woodring admits that Project Kaisei has limitations. “We won’t be able to clean up the entire ocean. The solution really lies on land. We have to treat plastics in a totally different way, and stop them ever reaching the ocean.”
Did you learn something about plastics? Is it not apparent that something major needs to be done?
I wish them luck. And I wish for everyone to consider what they buy when they go shopping and use less plastic. Or even better, If you love a product and know that the plastics they are using are not recyclable, e-mail them linking the article or write them and send them a print out of it. Their bottom line is no excuse anymore.
Thanks for reading.
Please do something.
Hi ZL:  How are you? Sorry that I have not called. I am up to my eyeballs in paperwork these days. We’ll catch up soon.
Anna: I had to laugh at your comment to your Chamorros friends: “I do this out of love. It is not my job.” Oh, how many times I have said those same words in my mind to myself when I have felt that I have not been putting enough time into my morning blog. But then oops, I realize no one is demanding anything of me except myself.  That’s when I tell myself to shut up and carry on. I’m doing what I can. By the way, you’re doing a great job committing yourself to writing here everyday too.  Hafa Adai.
Curious Minds:  That question came to my mind too. Hey TAO: Did you and/or Maddie  ‘borrow’ that Brazilian plane and try to fool us with some phony debris? (Added 9:15am: Note: This is in no disrespect to those lives that were lost, nor to the families who have lost their loved ones.)
Hello Alexander:  How are you? Thank you for the very interesting history lesson. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I bet my readers did too. Please tell us more. It is a welcoming break from all that is being discussed on my blog.
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle
