Happy Father’s Day!

Good morning!

These cartoon from The New Yorker made me chuckle. I didn’t post all of them, but picked out a few to post here for your enjoyment. If you want to see the rest click on the title. Enjoy!

Father’s Day Cartoons

The fathers conjured up in these cartoons are a disconcertingly competitive and pragmatic bunch. But don’t worry, dads, you’re much more lovable in real life—that’s why we’ve spent this whole weekend stressing about what color tie to buy you. Happy Father’s Day!

“For Father’s Day, I’m giving my dad an hour of free tech support.” TCB-41614 TCB-41963

TCB-41628 “They may be your grades, but they’re the return on my investment.”

TCB-45912

Readers: Do any of these remind you of your father? :) I HOPE everyone has a wonderful day with their fathers. I intend to with mine. Happy Father’s Day, guys!

Jeffrey: Got it. Thanks for continuing the conversation. Yes, your good friend Gail is obviously correct – the blog does have a lot of racism and profanity (and a lot more than that), but so does life. The blog is but a slice of what is really happening. Perhaps it is just too real.

It’s rare that I meet anyone, friend or acquaintance, in the real world who wants to admit that this is what is happening, nor do they want to discus it. I can’t tell you how many of my friends just don’t want to get into a political, feminist, or racist conversation – it’s just too uncomfortable. (The hot topics seem to be the latest shows on HBO)

Yeah well…one can only imagine what it’s like for women who don’t have rights, who have to endure rape and abuse, and the OTWs who deal with racism on a daily basis feel like. They have to live with the uncomfortable feeling of enduring it and people avoiding the elephant in many rooms.

Although I have to admit, I would rather they say nothing and do something…but I don’t see a lot of that happening either. It is more like, let’s just go into denial that this is even happening or…that it’s that bad…or I’m too busy with my life. We’re all busy, it’s happening and it is that bad.

It’s really quite simple for women. Just support your sisters in any way you can, and make it a daily habit. I too could do more. We all could do more.

Hmm…I didn’t think I had that much to say to you but I guess I did.

Interesting note about Howie. I’m sure he’ll get a kick out of that one.

Peace Out.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. Good morning!

From Think Progress:

5-5-5

5 Important News Stories On 5 Issues In 5 Charts

Catch up on the news of the week with our run-down of five key stories, each described with its own chart or map:

1. No, Taking Away Unemployment Benefits Doesn’t Make People Get Jobs. At the end of December, Republicans in Congress refused to join Democrats to pass a law extending unemployment insurance for nearly 1.3 million Americans. After already losing almost $5 billion in economic activity, new research makes the case that we need to extend this important lifeline. A study in Illinois found that more than four in five unemployed people who lost benefits were still jobless two months later. Another demonstrates the challenge the long-term unemployed face in this recovery: just 22 percent of those who ended up unemployed for six months or longer during the 2008 recession found steady, full-time work by the beginning of 2013. And finally, new analysis shows that for those whose benefits disappeared in December, only about a quarter had found jobs as of March–about the same success rate as when the program was still in effect. Roughly another one in four and dropped out of the labor force altogether.

2. A Woman With Perfect Grades Is Worth The Same As A Man With A 2.0 Average.Researchers at the University of Miami found that high school GPA is a strong predictor of income in adulthood. But perhaps the more dramatic finding was just how big a gap there is between men and women who earn the same grades. In fact, a woman who earns perfect grades goes on to earn roughly the same as a man with a 2.0 GPA:

3. The Poorest Americans Are Still Locked Out Of The Affordable Care Act. Many of the most vulnerable Americans are locked out of health reform because they live in states that have rejected Obamacare’s optional Medicaid expansion. More than 70 percent of those people live in just 11 southern states, and 35 percent of them live within the borders of five. Despite the overwhelming need, GOP lawmakers there continue to resist cooperating with health reform at any cost.

4. The World Quickly Stopped Caring About The Kidnapped Nigerian Girls. It’s a common assumption that interest in news stories, barring any major new developments, tends to fade over time. But there is perhaps no better example than that of the nearly 300 young girls kidnapped by terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria. This tragic story, which rose to international attention and mushroomed over social media with the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, has disappeared from international interest as fast as it arrived. A search on Google Trends over the last 90 days illustrates the point:

5. Marriage Equality Keeps Spreading, And Spreading, And Spreading. Pennsylvania became the 19th state in the union to allow same-sex marriage on Wednesday, after Gov. Tom Corbett (R) declined to appeal Tuesday’s court ruling that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Federal judge John E. Jones, a George W. Bush appointee, wrote in his decision: “We are a better people than what these laws represent, and it is time to discard them into the ash heap of history.” Rick Santorum, the prominent anti-gay Republican who as a Pennsylvania Senator recommended Judge Jones to the court, hasstayed mum on the issue. The state is just the latest domino to fall as courts across the country, in red states and blue states, invalidate marriage bans.

When Women Refuse

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 31st May 2014

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

To those who say, “Oh my god, I had no idea,” here’s more proof that the murdering rampage that Elliot Rodgers went on is no isolated incidence, but something that is very common.

From Think Progress.

Chilling New Website Documents What Happens To Women Who Reject Men’s Sexual Advances

A woman attacked with acid. A teenager stabbed to death. A woman raped and beaten. Women smashed in the head with bowling balls and glass bottles.

Those are real life examples of violence that women have experienced after they rejected the sexual advances of men — when they refused to flirt with them, dance with them, go on a date with them, or have sex with them — being collected by a new Tumblr page called “When Women Refuse.” The recent mass shooting in Santa Barbara, which was perpetrated by a young man who wanted to punish the women who weren’t attracted to him, is the latest example of a tragedy that fits this profile.

“We still don’t view gender based violence as a large cultural issue — we tend to think of these as isolated incidences,” Deanna Zandt, the co-founder of the digital strategy group Lux Digital and the feminist activist who started the Tumblr, explained in an interview. “We still don’t view it as a larger problem within rape culture.”

After news broke about this weekend’s shooting rampage, Zandt said that many of the men in her social networks were quick to assume that the perpetrator, Elliot Rodger, represents an extreme outlier. She wanted to do something to help people realize that what happened in Santa Barbara is actually all too common, thanks to our culture of violence and misogyny against women. So when she noticed the writer Kate Harding collecting similar news stories on her Facebook page, Zandt decided to house them on a public site, and “When Women Refuse” was born.

The site took off. Twitter users were quick to share it under the hashtag #YesAllWomen, which has emerged as a space for women to share their own personal experiences with violence and misogyny in the aftermath of the shooting.

“There’s been a really positive reaction from both men and women,” Zandt said. “I think it’s been really eye opening for many people. The most common response has been — ‘oh my god, I had no idea.’ ”

Thanks to the online tools that are now available to feminist activists, social media users are increasingly taking the opportunity to drive conversations about victim-blaming and gender-based violence. Earlier this year, feminists used Twitter to amplify women’s experiences with rape culture — a concept that was once relegated to the feminist blogosphere, but that has recently gained recognition in more mainstream circles. Now, the coverage around the Santa Barbara shooting has put a spotlight on the “Pick Up Artist” (PUA) community, which has a long history of treating women like objects that men are entitled to.

“The fact that this conversation is happening now is a huge indicator of the structural connectivity work that online feminists have been doing for years,” Zandt noted. “We’re in a different place than we were five years ago… We’re creating a space for these discussions.”

*****

Readers: I posted this write because as I said, stories need to be told and heard so that we women will shout “Enough!” And come together in support of each other.

Zandt noted that “We’re in a different place than we were five years ago… We’re creating a space for these discussions.”  I realize her intentions are good….Although I HOPE that she is creating a space for more than discussion, because we need a clarion call to action, to ALL women to “woman up!” – Thanks Janet!

I HOPE to hear from more of all you Wonderful Women Of The World. Got to go….Blog me. Lots of LOVE to all of you.

Peace out.

Just Noticing: “Observations of a Blogger”

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th April 2014

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Please excuse my grammatical errors in yesterday’s top paragraph post. Now…onto today’s write:

“Just noticing…”

Since the crazy ass small dick wonders decided to come out yesterday, I decided today I would post this in their honor:

Crazy Japan’s Penis Festival!

“Each spring, people flock to Kawasaki, Japan, to celebrate Kanamara Matsuri, aka the “Festival of the Steel Phallus.”

Held this year on April 6, the festival is a celebration of the penis and fertility. People parade gigantic phallic-shaped mikoshi (portable Shinto shrines) down the streets during the event, as revelers suck on penis lollipops, buy penis-themed memorabilia and pose with sculptures in the shape of — you guessed it — penises.

Ladies: Have at it. Blog me.

For those of you interested in finding out the origin of this penis festival came about, (a vagina eating penis with teeth – uh huh.) you might want to click over to here or here. Again ladies, have at it.

Oh and girls, in case you’re feeling a little left out, because believe me I was after reading this. I mean what about a “vagina festival” honoring our pussies! Oohh they’ve got one of those too! I’ve read it happens a few days to a week before.

Just noticing…I had a hard time finding info that was recent for the vagina festival. It seems they just don’t promote it as much, and when they do talk about it, the penis festival is always part of the write. And…it was tough finding photo of our beloved vaginas. It seems to be all about the dick, as usual. No surprise though eh?

Here’s the write from World Asia News

Japan’s Celebration of Spring: Penis and Vagina Festivals

Dating back more than 1,500 years, Japan’s rites of spring are deeply rooted in its agricultural past.

As in all the world’s ancient cultures, such observances were believed to promote a successful harvest and produce many babies.

It is ironic that Japan’s Penis and Vagina Festival is an annual event dating back to ancient times and today that nation has one of the world’s lowest birth rates.

The government hopes to ease the financial burden of child-rearing and encourage more children by offering a monthly stipend of $280 per child.

But these annual festivals, which attract many tourists and fill local coffers, offer more encouragement on a visceral level.

There are several penis and vagina festivals held throughout Japan, but the most renowned takes place every March 15th at Komaki City’s Tagata Shrine.

In a desire to offend no one and include everybody, a neighboring village holds a vagina festival, which occurs a few days before.

The Hime-no-miya Grand Vagina Festival is a sacred rite involving prayer, food and celebration. Parents dress up their children, pray for healthy babies, and consume sake along with beer and many snacks.

An afternoon parade consists of 40 men carrying a massive vagina to the Ogata shrine, which is preceded by children bringing a small vagina to that same shrine in the morning.

The penis festival draws more than 100,000 observers and involves a 90-minute procession with teams of men carrying a phallus carved from Japanese cypress that measures 2 X 6.5 feet in length. For the sake of the crowd, they stop to spin the giant penis around, cheering as they make their way strenuously up the path.

“This phallus parade is rooted in an ancient Japanese belief that for the growth and development of all things, the mother, earth, has to be impregnated by the father, heaven,” claims a brochure describing the unusual event.

Vendors have a heyday at this festival, selling penis-and vagina-shaped candies and chocolate-covered bananas. Candles, wood penis sculptures and penis earrings are also very popular.

Rites of spring abound in many cultures, but all are developed as a part of the specific society they represent.

In Japan, sexuality is expressed differently, despite the universal aspects of spring and fertility.

For example, it is illegal in Japan to produce vibrators that are anatomically correct

Thus, they all look like something else.

*****

Here are the only photos I could find showcasing women’s vaginas:
