Purging People From Voting

Good morning!

Mike, TM: Thanks for your opinion. The truth is so simply said. What more is there to say? Except additionally, as you and others have pointed out, it doesn’t really matter since the repubs are planning on stealing the election no matter who is running with Romney. Run with satan, or whoever, - the racists will vote white no matter. And just in case they fear the racists won’t pull through, they’ll just cover their ass and try to steal the election. The important word here is “try”. I’m HOPEing and expecting that those on Obama’s team and in support of him will prevent the thieves from success. I plan on doing my best.

I HOPE all is well in your world. Oh…I just went to the gas station yesterday and noticed that gas hiked up over .20 cents more per gallon than it was just a few days ago, I’m pretty sure. The rise in my opinion has already begun. Thanks for the notification. I HOPE it doesn’t get much worse.

Speaking of the election, stealing the votes isn’t the only way to ensure a win. Preventing those who are likely to vote for Obama is another way. Here’s the latest (?) on disenfranchisement:

New Analysis: Voter Purges Disproportionately Remove Minorities, Seniors, Young People

John Lewis being beaten by state troopers, March 7, 1965

John Lewis being beaten by state troopers, March 7, 1965

Catalist, a company that provides voting list data to progressive organizations, is among the closest observers of changes to voting rolls around the country. In analysis shared with ThinkProgress, the company observes that since November 2008, certain groups of living residents have been far more likely to be purged from the voting roles than others.

Their data suggests that beyond the wide variation in purge rates across states, there is significant variation within states:

In many states, certain parts of the state electorate, both geographically and demographically, are much more likely to be dropped off of the voter rolls than others. More specifically, some general trends that we see are focused on:
a. Urbanity – cities are getting disproportionately purged
b. Race – minorities are getting disproportionately purged
c. Marital Status – unmarried people are getting disproportionately purged
d. Age – younger (< 40 years old) and older (> 65 years old) voters are purged more frequently than middle-aged voters
e. County effects – there are big differences across county lines, pointing to sharp discontinuities based on arbitrary political boundaries that do not correspond with inherent behavioral differences

Catalist notes that more than 2.7 million living people who voted in 2008 have since been purged from the voter rolls. Among those, African American voters are “1.5 times more likely to be purged than Caucasian voters, nationally.”

These findings are consistent with what we have seen in Florida with Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) error-riddled purge attempts. A Miami Herald analysis showed that “Hispanic, Democratic and independent-minded voters [were] the most likely to be targeted” by that effort.

Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who led the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s efforts in the 1960s to ensure voting rights for all Americans, said last month that these purges of eligible voters from the rolls make him “want to just cry, after people gave a little blood, after some people were beaten, shot and murdered trying to help people become registered voters.” He lamented that “states throughout the nation come along with tactics to make it hard, to make it difficult for people to participate. We should be making it easy and simple and open up the political process and let all of the people come in.”

Instead, Scott and others are pushing efforts that may make it impossible for these millions of U.S. citizens to exercise their right to vote. These numbers show that regardless of whether the intent of these purges is discriminatory, their effect clearly is.

The Abuse And Degradation To OTWs Continue

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th August 2012

Good morning!

I found this write that once again proves my point from yesterday.  It shows that the white america will allow their cops to practice any kind of degradation upon the OTWs as long as they figure the cops won’t do it to “us”.

Cops Strip Search Mom, “Forcibly” Pull Tampon Out of Her for Maybe Rolling Through Stop Sign

Getting pulled over for rolling through a stop sign is whack. But getting pulled over, having a gun pointed in your face, and then being strip searched on the side of the road in front of your two children for rolling through a stop sign is, well, really whack and probably an excessive use of force.

At least. that’s what a new lawsuit in the Sunshine State is claiming.

Last July, Leila Tarantino claims that she was pulled over by an officer with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Department. In the suit, Tarantino says she came to a full stop and should have never been pulled over in the first place.

A passing cop pulled a u-turn, flashed the lights, and rolled up behind her. Tarantino claims that the cop immediately drew his weapon, pulled her from the car, and refused to explain why he pulled her over. Tarantino’s two young children watched all of this unfold from inside her car.

The cop then placed Tarantino in the back of the squad car, where she allegedly sat for two hours. When backup arrived, Tarantino was strip searched on the side of the road, where passing motorists could see everything.

Then, in a gruesome twist, a female officer “forcibly removed” a tampon from Tarantino. Presumably, the cops were looking for drugs, but the lawsuit notes that a drug-sniffing dog was never called in, and cops never found any contraband or anything illegal.

The lawsuit does not name the cops involved but notes that there were five male officers and one female officer.

According to the court filing, cops released Tarantino with a citation.

For those of you interested, here’s a copy of the lawsuit:

Tarantino Tampon Lawsuit

*******

Readers: Can you imagine a woman doing this to another woman? Simply disgusting and unacceptable behavior. If we have women treating women like this, what does that say? Not a sister…Not a Wonderful Woman Of The World.

Now the latest is that the Citrus County Sheriff’s Department is denying Tarantino’s accusations. Well of course the are. Thoughts? Blog me.

Peter: You got it. Weber is a welcomed member in the LSOS club.

Howie: No big deal. Thanks for posting and reposting. But more importantly, thanks for getting back to me and giving the details of AH, Adam and Bita. I was so curious and concerned as it has been some time. The first thing that came to my mind was one of my favorite funny movies: “Groundhog day“.  So like Melanie, I was curious about the answers to her questions when I read them. I HOPE that luck continues to be on their side and they are able to figure out the equations and slip through the wormhole corridor when it opens up.

I HOPE you are doing good.

Mike, TM: I found your comment interesting. You report that the “money men” want Paul Ryan to be the second for various reasons. The Huff Po reports that Romney picking Ryan for his running mate is great for the Dems for various reasons. I would like to hear your take on it if you have the time and interest in sharing. What do you think?

Peace out.

Cops Accused Of Beating Jordan Miles, Pittsburgh Teen, Cleared Of Malicious Prosecution Charge

Jordan Miles

PITTSBURGH — A federal court jury found three white Pittsburgh police officers did not maliciously prosecute a young black man who was arrested for prowling and fighting with police, but was unable to come to a verdict on whether officers used excessive force and falsely arrested him.

The verdict Wednesday came after five days of deliberations. It means the jury of five men and three women, all white except for the black male foreman, could not award damages to Jordan Miles who maintains he was stopped without cause – likely because he was a young black man walking in his high-crime neighborhood – then wrongly arrested and beaten before and after he was handcuffed on a frigid, snowy night.

“It’s a good win for us,” said James Wymard, the attorney for Officer David Sisak who wasn’t in the courtroom because he’s vacationing with his family.

“We said all along once this case was exposed to the light of daylight these allegations would not stand,” said Robert Leight, attorney for another defendant, Officer Richard Ewing.

Ewing said only that the officers “weren’t allowed” to comment as he and Officer Michael Saldutte, the third defendant, walked briskly from the courtroom.

Miles, now 20, his mother and sister declined comment, but his attorneys promised to continue the legal battle.

“There will be a new trial on the most important issue: Was there excessive force?” said Tim O’Brien, one of Miles’ attorneys.

The officers had always maintained they did nothing wrong and that they stopped Miles only because he appeared to be lurking near a neighbor’s home and had a bulge in his coat pocket which they took for a gun before finding only a soda bottle about 11 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2010. Miles has denied having even the bottle. He said he was merely walking about a block to his grandmother’s house, where he routinely spent the night, when the plainclothes officers rolled up to him asking for money, drugs and a gun – a tactic the police denied using, but which Miles’ attorneys said is used to put suspected drug dealers on the defensive.

Miles, then an 18-year-old senior at Pittsburgh’s performing arts high school with no criminal record, was charged with assaulting police, loitering and prowling at night, resisting arrest and escape. Miles said he ran away and struggled with police only, but only because they didn’t identify themselves as police and he feared being robbed.

Saldutte’s veteran police union lawyer, Bryan Campbell, said the verdict shows the jury believed the officers. “The jury had to decide which story they wanted to believe,” Campbell said.

Miles’ malicious prosecution claim alleged the officers filed the criminal charges without justification, possibly out of spite or to justify the force used to arrest Miles. The wrongful arrest claim, though similar, must be retried and dealt specifically with whether the officers had reasonable suspicion, on the spot, to arrest Miles.

Also to be retried is Miles’ claim that police used excessive force – choking him and hitting him in the head with a hard object after he was handcuffed, among other alleged abuse – that left him with post-traumatic stress disorder and short-term memory problems that will keep him from completing a college education and realizing his full personal and earning potential.

A district justice dismissed the criminal charges against Miles two months later when the woman who lived in the house where police contend they saw Miles lurking testified she never told police she didn’t know who he was and was never asked, as officers claimed in a criminal complaint, whether he had permission to be there.

O’Brien said he’s hopeful a new jury will see the case differently – especially if the judge can be persuaded to allow some evidence in the retrial which was barred from this trial, including a police commander’s testimony that Saldutte and Ewing had made up claims to support similar arrests in the past.

Readers: Whenever I read writes such as this one, I get so upset. This proves once again that the justice system is “just us”. I’m sure cops do this horrific behavior because they know they can get away with it. Make sure there is all white jury, which it doesn’t seem to be tough to get, and they are practically guaranteed they will never be convicted. It is just so unfair and so not right.

These cops have done it before and they will do it again, as long as they know they can get away with it. It angers me and sickens me.  I can feel what the family must feel – frustrated…HOPEless when the system is obviously not just.

What are your thoughts? It is Friday…Blog me.

Robert, RT: As always, it is a pleasure seeing you here.

Ruth: I have come up with a moniker ( finally) that I think you will like. I’ll e-mail it to you, and if you like it, use it.

Zen Lill: Sorry to have missed you again. I HOPE you had fun with your BF – sounds like you did! I have a wonderful friend in town too so I was unavailable last night. We’ll keep trying. :)

Peace out.

Revisiting The Horrors Of The Holocaust

Good morning!

Readers: I am amazed that such a comment posted on my blog is left untouched…no response. At least not as of 10:10 PM Monday evening. ( I am wring this on Monday night, as you know it is my up and out of here early morning.) It happens pretty often after someone confesses their crimes, that nothing is said. Sometimes I think that there is so much bad that happens in this world that we have become desensitized to reading something such as what Charles posted. Or perhaps we are just shocked and don’t know how to respond. We all know horrific things happen every day…we hear confessions quite often here. But that doesn’t make them less tragic or less sickening just because we hear of them more often. I know you know this.

For me, I feel helpless; especially lately. I don’t know how to stop the sick racists from the evil that they do. Not sure they can be stopped if we keep allowing gun laws to remain how they are today. So what do I say to Charles? I am a bit speechless too. Yes, I can call him a sick, evil person. But what I want to ask is: “Are you still the same sick person you were? Ad if not, what are you doing to redeem yourself?” Because what you did is deeply disturbing, and I can on HOPE that you are doing something to make up for your evil. Well?

This was sent to me and I thought it was apropos. It was originally aired in 2007 on 60 Minutes but didn’t get much media coverage. Jut recently the following e-mail has been circulating.

VERY sad, unbelievable….

This  story was aired on CBS on “60 MINUTES” ** about a long-secret German  archive that houses a treasure trove of information on 17.5 million victims of the Holocaust.

The archive, located in the German town of Bad  Arolsen , is massive (there are 16 miles of shelving containing 50 million  pages of documents) and until recently, was off-limits to the public.

But after the German government agreed earlier this year to open the archives,  CBS News’ Scott Pelley traveled there with three Jewish survivors who were  able to see their own Holocaust records.

It’s an incredibly moving piece,  all the more poignant in the wake of the meeting of Holocaust deniers in Iran and the denial speeches in the UN. We’re trying to get word out about  the story to people who have a special interest in this  subject.

A continuation of yesterday. While Obama clearly cares about women, the repubs renew the war on women. I am posting this specifically for the girls out there who are in support of that repub Romney. If you care about your health and the health of your mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, nieces…you’ll be smart and vote for Obama in November.

Republicans Renew War on Women

Starting today, critical women’s preventive health services will be available to women, free of co-pays or deductibles — a hard-fought benefit for women in Nevada and across the country that is long overdue.

Yet on the eve of the implementation of these historic benefits for women, my Republican colleagues were still trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act — the very law that offers these benefits along with many other crucial protections for women.

Beginning today, for the first time, new insurance plans will be required to cover — without any co-pays — well-woman visits, contraception, breastfeeding support and supplies, screening for gestational diabetes, screening and counseling for domestic violence, as well as testing for HPV and HIV.

An estimated 47 million women nationwide, including nearly 400,000 women in my home state of Nevada, are expected to benefit from this new policy.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, new insurance plans are already required to cover preventive care like mammograms, colonoscopies, blood pressure checks, prenatal exams and childhood immunizations without cost-sharing. Yet Republicans are so intent on blocking women’s preventive services like contraception coverage from taking effect, they are willing to risk national security.

Yesterday, the Republican leader proposed voting to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act , a move that threatened to derail the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 — legislation that is critical to our national security and completely unrelated to health care.

Covering preventive health services for women is long overdue. While women are more likely to need preventive health services, they often have less ability to pay for them than men. On average, women have lower incomes, and a greater share of their salary is consumed by out-of-pocket health costs.

Half the women in this country have delayed preventive care because of price tags, according to the Commonwealth Fund. Millions of American women delay doctor’s visits, yearly, because they can’t cover co-pays, or miss pills to save money.

It is no wonder the U.S. has one of the highest rates of unintended pregnancy of industrialized countries.

That is why, fifteen years ago, I began a bipartisan initiative with Senator Olympia Snowe to expand access to contraception for women. As part of this effort, we passed a law that gave federal employees access to contraception. When this policy took effect in 1999, despite the warnings of our critics, premiums did not go up.

Yet what began as a bipartisan, commonsense proposal fifteen years ago has turned into an unfortunate debate in Congress. Many of my Republican colleagues are downplaying the importance of covering preventing health care for women, or trying to repeal health reform altogether.

They’ve blocked efforts to give women who want it, access to contraception, and they’ve shown little interest in protecting the health of victims of sexual assault.

Putting ideology ahead of science is inexplicable.

I will continue doing everything I can to protect a woman’s right to health care. Today’s implementation of new women’s preventive benefits is just the beginning.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, by 2014, almost 19 million uninsured women will be eligible for comprehensive health coverage, women may no longer be charged more for the same policy as men, and women cannot be denied coverage because they have a pre-existing condition.

Asking American women to continue denying themselves the care they need is unacceptable. Only by focusing on America’s best interest, rather than our own political interests, will we have a stronger, healthier future together.

Readers: Just to make it easy reading for everyone, as Scott suggested (Thanks Scott!), when you are responding or referring to someone please include their “name” and the “number” of their comment. Thanks.

Lloyd, Trent, BC, et al: Thank you for your in the moment comments. I was shocked to read what you wrote when I finally did read them. I am assuming and HOPEing that all of you are still alive and safe. My condolences to the families and friends of those that were killed. This is just horrifying.

I read the write on HuffPO – Once again, I am sickened and saddened by what is happening in this world.

The Oak Creek shooting was the latest in a series of suburban U.S. gun rampages. Organizations fighting gun violence rate Wisconsin’s gun safety laws from low to moderate. There are no limits on the number of firearms that can be purchased at one time, nor on the possession or transfer of assault weapons, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Tracy: Yes, it is definitely a “testament to the dedication…”. I am amazed and grateful.

Blog Biz: Just to let you know, on Sundays I post around 11:00 AM. This gives me time on a Sunday to just relax in the morning if I choose. And since I am pretty consistent with the time, you, my readers, won’t expect my blog to post anytime earlier. However, sometimes I write early if I’ve want, but schedule it to post at 11:00. That is the reason why I did not make a comment before I posted yesterday. I actually finished my write at around 9:30 AM and scheduled it to post at 11:00 AM. I  was not on my blog at all after 9:30.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Gratefully your blog host,
