How A Private Company Counts Our Votes On Election Night

Good morning!

Delores: Interesting article. Thanks for posting. This write has been in my blog box for a few weeks. I think today is a good time to post it:

(Note: Christopher Bollyn is one of the greatest reporters in the world. He is independent and intrepid. He is what Geraldo Rivera and Dan Rather pretend to be. Bollyn reported on, and contributed to, our “Citizens for a Fair Vote Count” Convention which was held at the Greater Cincinnati Airport in late August, 2000. This article explains, as far as possible, the nuts and bolts of how 99% of the counties in the USA incredibly delegate the “counting” of our votes to a few private companies, who “count” the votes in secret. We at votefraud.org believe that these few private companies now fix every key election in collaboration with the 5 major TV Networks, the AP Wire Service, and the Ruling Elite behind all these entities. This Ruling Elite also controls the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee — which entities look the other way and NEVER protest this absolutely un-American, unconstitutional, and criminal arrangement.)

HOW A PRIVATE COMPANY COUNTS OUR VOTES ON ELECTION NIGHT

 By Christopher Bollyn
American Free Press

When the polls closed in Chicago, American Free Press was at the Cook County clerk’s office to see how the secretive private company that operates the voting machines in America’s third largest city actually controls the counting of the votes.

CHICAGO, Illinois: The morning after Election Day, the Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards promised the nation that the Democrats would “make sure that every vote counts, and that every vote is counted.”

Later in the day, as the Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry, conceded defeat to George W. Bush, his 9th cousin and fellow “Bonesman” from Yale’s elite secret society, The Order of the Skull & Bones, he said: “In America, it is vital that every vote count.”

Kerry and Edwards, however, conceded defeat before some 170,000 to 250,000 provisional ballots from the state of Ohio, which could have changed the outcome of the election, had been counted.

As the public has been led to believe, the final tally came down to a near 50-50 split and it was the “swing state” of Ohio that made the difference.

But how were the votes actually counted across the nation on November 2?

VOTING IN CHICAGO

On Election Day, voters in Cook County (Ill.) were among the 60 million Americans who voted with machines made by Election Systems & Software, a secretive and private company based in Omaha.

ES&S, as its known, calls itself “the world’s largest and most experienced provider of total election management solutions.”  According to the company’s own figures, 42 percent of all registered voters in the United States voted on ES&S equipment on Election Day.

ES&S sells its “end-to-end election management suite of solutions” to replace traditional voting methods – and election officials – with what it calls “one-stop-shop” full service election coordination from start to finish.

What this means on Election Day is that ES&S, a private company, manages everything about the voting, from voter registration, the printing of ballots, the programming of the voting machines, the counting and tabulation of the votes, and the final reporting of the results for 60 million Americans in 47 states.

Four years after first revealing the flaws inherent in the insecure ES&S electronic voting machines used in Cook County,American Free Press went to the county clerk’s office to observe how ES&S controls the counting of the votes for America’s third largest city, Chicago, and the suburban area around it.

Scott Burnham, spokesman for the county clerk, had informed me that the vote count is open to the public and that press credentials would not be required.  Shortly after arriving, I ran into Burnham and David Orr, the county clerk, in the hallway.

Although I had arrived just shortly before the polls closed at 7 p.m., I was the only member of the public or the press around except for a couple Associated Press (AP) reporters in the far corner of the room.  They were busy setting up their laptop to the ES&S computer in the backroom, which provided them with “direct feed” of the results.

I was surprised to see so few people attending such an important event.  In France, scores of citizens watch the vote count in each polling station.

While the results were coming in, the AP “reporter” read a novel while her laptop did the communicating.

When I went to talk to the AP reporter, Burnham quickly appeared and told me to leave.  “You should talk to AP,” he said.

“She is AP,” I replied.

“She just works for AP,” he said.

Clearly the subject of AP having direct data feed from the mainframe computer was something Burnham did not want me to discuss.

Dane Placko, a local reporter for the Fox News network, told AFP that, “Fox gets direct feed.”

Any actual counting of the votes by citizens is very rare in the United States except for a few counties in Montana and other states where paper ballots are still hand-counted.  In most counties the ballots are treated as input data to be processed through computer systems controlled by private companies like ES&S.

In Cook County the ballot is inevitably a cluttered punch card with nearly 100 votes.  After voting for the president and vice-president, a senator, and a Congressman, the voter has to wade through pages of choices to vote for some 80 local officials from the sanitation board to the state’s general assembly.  Every voter had to vote on nearly 80 judges.

As I voted, every ballot that was fed into the ES&S machine registered as an “undervote,” as did mine.

Rather than holding separate elections for national and local officials, as is done in most countries, the Cook County ballot is extremely long and complicated.  Officials who support electronic voting systems give the complexity of the ballot as the main reason why voting machines are necessary – because it would take too much time to count the votes manually.

After calling and personally visiting ES&S headquarters in Omaha and Chicago, I can say it is the most secretive company I have ever come across.  In August, I visited ES&S company headquarters on John Galt Blvd. in Omaha.

Although the company says it is the largest voting machine company in the United States, they were unable to provide any information about their company or their products.  The ownership of the company is a closely-guarded secret.  I asked to meet with Todd Urosevich, one of the two brothers that founded the company.

Bob and Todd Urosevich started ES&S as a company called Data Mark in the early 1980s.  Today, Bob Urosevich heads Ohio-based Diebold Election Systems, a competitor of ES&S and the second largest U.S. manufacturer of electronic voting machines.

Together, the computerized ballot scanners (ed: not to be confused with barcode scanners as related to mailing envelopesand other facets of our daily lives) and touch-screen voting machines systems made by ES&S and Diebold recorded some 80 percent of all votes cast in the recent U.S. presidential election.

As ES&S had no media relations person available and Todd Urosevich was not willing to be interviewed, the company’s chief financial officer Tom O’Brien finally appeared.  O’Brien, clearly displeased with my visit and questions, refused to provide any information about the company.

Although I was ill on Election Day, I knew I had to go to the county clerk’s office to observe “counting” of the vote.  It is, after all, the only “counting” open to the public.  What I saw in Chicago, however, only made me more nauseous.

The only “vote count” the press or public can observe in Chicago is what is projected on screens.  The opening screen read: ES&S Automatic Election Returns, Release 35, Under License to the City of Chicago, Serial No. 0004, Copyright 1987.

Carl Zimmerman, technical supervisor for the clerk’s office, said that the computer that ran the system was in the back,“in the ES&S room,” he said.

At 7 p.m., Jonathan Lin, a worker on the county clerk’s computer staff, came out and turned on the monitors on the 6thfloor, where the City of Chicago votes were tallied and displayed.  Behind him was Rick Thurman, an ES&S technician, checking the first results.

Thurman seemed surprised when I asked him if he worked for ES&S.  He said that the company had about 6 engineers running the computer in the back room.  He then checked himself, saying he had said too much.

Later I asked Lin who was actually operating the computer that was generating the results being shown on the monitors.“ES&S is running the mainframe for all of this,” Lin said pointing to the television displays.

In the press room in the back I noticed stacks of boxes containing “Votamatic” voting machines and “pre-punched” ballots printed by ES&S of Addison, Texas, for the different precincts in Cook County.  In the rear hallway behind the press room was the ES&S room.  Only ES&S personnel were allowed into the room.

When I poked around in the hallway and peeked into the ES&S room an armed marshal and ES&S employee quickly appeared.  In no condition for a confrontation, I made myself scarce.

I met a couple reporters from CLTV, a local cable channel of WGN. One of the reporters asked about my interest in theChicago tallies.  I said I was interested to see how a private company runs the elections in Chicago.

Seemingly unaware of how ES&S operates elections in Cook County, I explained the basics.  “I’ve observed elections across Europe,” I added, “from France and Germany to Serbia and Holland.  Everywhere in Europe voting is done on paper ballots that are counted by the citizens – except Holland.”

Obviously uncomfortable with this discussion the reporter responded, “I’m glad I’m not in Serbia.  I don’t mind if a machine counts the votes.”

License To Kill More Likely To Succeed If Victim Is Black

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 12th June 2012

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

I am not a bit surprised.

Florida’s Stand Your Ground Defense More Likely To Succeed If Victim Is Black: Study

newspaper report has found that the Stand Your Ground self-defense statute in Florida is more likely to succeed when the victim is black.

The Tampa Bay Times looked at 200 cases and found that in instances in which the victim was black, the person who invoked the defense went free 73 percent of the time. If the victim was white, the person walked free 59 percent of the time. The report also found that more than two thirds of all the people who invoked the law were acquitted, and that the defense is being invoked in more and more cases.

“People often go free under ‘stand your ground’ in cases that seem to make a mockery of what lawmakers intended,” wrote the Times reporters. “One man killed two unarmed people and walked out of jail. Another shot a man as he lay on the ground. Others went free after shooting their victims in the back. In nearly a third of the cases the Times analyzed, defendants initiated the fight, shot an unarmed person or pursued their victim — and still went free.”

The reporters acknowledged that there is no comprehensive data on “stand your ground” decisions, since police departments and prosecutors often don’t indicate why they chose not to arrest or press charges against someone.

The state’s law justifies the use of force if ” it is presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another.”

Stand your ground laws — and Florida’s in particular — have come in for particular scrutiny in the wake of the killing of Trayvon Martin in February. The unarmed 17-year-old was shot in Sanford, Fla., as he returned from a convenience store to the house where his father was staying. His shooter, George Zimmerman, told a police dispatcher that Martin looked suspicious, and he shot Martin in the altercation that followed. The case has become a flashpoint in the national debates over racial profiling and gun control.

A majority of Floridians still support the law, according to a Quinnipiac poll from last month. Seventy-eight percent of Republicans surveyed support Stand Your Ground, compared to only 58 percent of Independents and 32 percent of Democrats.

Many of the stand your ground laws around the country were sponsored by the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, a conservative lobbying group that has come under fire in the aftermath of the Martin shooting. Several large corporations who contributed to ALEC, including Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola and Kraft, have severed ties with the organization in recent months.

Readers:  Oh…perhaps you noticed that I renamed the title of today’s write to: “License To Kill More Likely To Succeed If Victim Is Black”. I like mine better because it tells it like it is. Don’t you think?

Sasha: I will echo Danielle’s words and say, “Go for it”.

That’s it for me today. What’s up with you? Blog me.

Monday Morning Madness Continues

Good morning!

Mike, TM: I used to read Politico frequently.  I don’t read it as much anymore and now with your latest, I’ll certainly look at it with a different perspective. I was quite surprised at the outcome of the Wis recall of Scott Walker. At first I thought it was a trial run for the presidential election. Yes it was, but it seems that there was no reason to “steal” the election by controlling the voting machines; it seems they had the votes to begin with.

I hate to think that Obama is next but I know you’re correct. I had my own personal enlightening moment of just how much people are believing the lies, and deciding to not vote for Obama this November. Are you kidding me? This is deeply disturbing.

I HOPE you are well Mike.

Readers: Speaking of Obama, I know that this topic has already been broached Beverly a few days ago by , but this is the kind of stuff that just blows my mind. I will echo Beverly’s comment and say that, “White America would never tolerate this being done to a white man.”

Here’s the write just in case you didn’t read about it:

Terry Jones, Quran-Burning Pastor, Hangs Barack Obama Effigy Outside Florida Church (PHOTO)

The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., has hanged an effigy of President Barack Obama from a gallows on its front lawn, a move DWOC pastor Terry Jones said was in response to Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage, as well as his stance on abortion and what Jones called his “appeasing of radical Islam.”

According to the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, the U.S. Secret Service is currently investigating Jones in response to the display.

“The Secret Service is aware of this incident and will conduct appropriate follow-up,” Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary told the paper’s “The Pulp” blog.

The effigy is suspended from a makeshift gallows with a noose of yellow rope, has a doll in its right hand and a rainbow-colored gay pride flag in its left.

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTO

In a telephone interview with The Huffington Post, Jones said the flag was meant to call attention to Obama’s stance on same-sex marriage and that the baby doll is there because the president is “favorable toward abortion.”

Jones also said that radical Islam is “the most dangerous threat to life and national security in America.”

There is also an Uncle Sam dummy standing at the base of the gallows outside the DWOC. Jones told HuffPost that the Obama effigy had originally been positioned to be hanging Uncle Sam when the display went up two weeks ago, but that the church changed the display on Wednesday.

The words “Obama is Killing America” are printed on a trailer nearby.

The DWOC came under intense scrutiny in 2011 after Jones burned a copy of the Quran, a move which sparked three days of violent rioting in Afghanistan that resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people, including seven U.N. workers.

In addition to its higher profile controversial moves, the Dove World Outreach Center has also been criticized for its internal rules, which The Smoking Gun has called “cult-like.”

In the church’s Academy Rulebook, written by Jone’s wife and published in 2007, prospective ministers are directed to cut off most contact with family members.

This is not the first time that an effigy of the country’s first black president has been hanged.

In March 2010, a teacher at a failing Rhode Island school hanged an effigy of Obama in his classroom. That same month, another dummy was found hanging on Main Street in the Georgia hometown of President Jimmy Carter.

In 2009, a Kentucky grand jury refused to indict two men who hanged an Obama effigy on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The men had been charged with burglary and disorderly conduct, the latter count associated with hanging the effigy. The lawyer for the two men said that the disorderly conduct charge violated his clients’ rights under the First Amendment.

Nelson: I liked your write until I got to the part that said, “I can understand the average white man not being comfortable with a former slave in that office but honestly, hanging the nigger in effigy is a bit much.“. Wha’at? No, I can’t understand the “average” white man nor any white man not being comfortable…

Perhaps you’re talking “average” when it comes to “dick size”. So yes,  a black man in office…a black man with most likely a “big dick”, and intelligent, and running our country, and doing more than any other past president. Yes, many small dick wonders obviously have a problem with that.

Got to run. Blog me.

Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

I’ve given the title of Wonderful Woman of The World to Jennifer Siebel Newsom beforefor her efforts to eradicate sexism. I’ve blogged about “Miss Representation“, her film that exposes how American youth are being sold the concept that women and girls’ value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. The film had its broadcast premiere on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in October of 2011.

Here’s the trailer of the film if you haven’t seen it:

I’m blogging about Newsom again today because of my passion to support and empower women, and because even more so lately with all of the efforts to limit and control women, enslave women, etc., I feel that anything that helps inspire and empower women, needs to be in our faces as much as possible, so that we as a society will take the necessary actions for a shift to take place in our society.

Awhile ago I joined Newsom in her efforts by signing up for her weekly e-mails and inspirations on how to be a voice in our community. I’ve taken the pledge to use my voice to spread the message of Miss Representation and challenge the media’s limiting portrayal of women and girls. It is rampant in our society and I know many of you, my readers, feel the same as I do: We want it to stop. But wanting it is not enough.

Today, I want to encourage you to do the same, and take the pledge. I’ve made it easy: Click here. For those of you who may not want to take the pledge for whatever reason,  but still want to support women and girls, I’m posting a list, thanks to Miss Representation, of things that you can do, steps that you can take to amplify the voices of women and girls everywhere, motivate men and boys to stand up to sexism, and shift our culture towards equality:

Watch the film…or even better, host a screening.  And then:

1. Tell 5 people about the film and share one thing you learned from watching it.

2. Parents- watch TV and films with your children.  Raise questions like “What if that character had been a girl instead?”

3. Remember your actions influence others. Mothers, aunts and loved ones- don’t downgrade or judge yourself by your looks. Fathers, uncles and loved ones—treat women around you with respect.  Remember children in your life are watching and learning from you.

4. Use your consumer power. Stop buying tabloid magazines and watching shows that degrade women. Go see movies that are written and directed by women (especially on opening weekend to boost the box office ratings). Avoid products that resort to sexism in their advertising.

5. Mentor others! It’s as easy as taking a young woman to lunch. Start by having open and honest conversations with a young person in your life.

*W*W*O*T*W*

Readers: The key to change is combining awareness and action. If you want more ways to get involved, visit Miss Representation’s website. Are you with me? Thank you!

Does Romney Support The Paycheck Fairness Act?

Stay tuned for today’s topic: Rachel Maddow does her best to find out.

Good morning!

First of all, I was really HOPEing that Walker would pack his bags and walk, but evidently he’s in to stay. From Maddow’s blog: Tom Barrett lost last night, but he wasn’t the only one.”

And, since I’m on the topic of Maddow, and I dig her commentary in a big way, why not continue.

Linda: To answer your question: In one word, “No”, and Today’s topic is for you. Oh…Please enlighten me on what NLD stands for. Thanks. Happy to hear you’re a cancer surviver. My best to you.

Rachel Maddow Finally Receives A Response From Mitt Romney’s Campaign (VIDEO)

Rachel Maddow shared some big news on her MSNBC show Monday night.

Following months of requesting comment from GOP candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign on various issues, Maddow announced that her show had finally received a response.

“They have always just pretended we did not exist,” Maddow said of the Romney campaign. “But today, today we got something!”

Maddow’s show reached out to Romney’s campaign to learn if the governor supported the latest equal pay for women bill, the Paycheck Fairness Act. The Senate will vote on the bill on Tuesday. President Obama personally got on a White House press conference call to further urge Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. Maddow said Romney has been avoiding commenting on the bill.

So, Maddow’s producers reached out to the Romney campaign for comment. “We asked them in writing, ‘What is Gov. Romney’s position on the Paycheck Fairness Act being voted on in the Senate on Tuesday?’” Maddow said.

Maddow enthusiastically reported that her show received a “really fast reponse” from a Romney spokesperson.

“Of course Gov. Romney supports pay equity for women. In order to have pay equity, women need to have jobs, and they have been getting crushed in this anemic Obama economy, losing far more jobs than men. As president, Mitt Romney will create a pro-jobs business climate that will put all Americans back to work,” a Romney spokesperson wrote.

Maddow pointed out that while she received a response, she did not receive an actual answer to her question. So her producers emailed again, asking one more time if Romney supports the Paycheck Fairness Act. They received a curt response from the Romney campaign stating, “Gov. Romney supports pay equity for women.”

Maddow’s show attempted for a third time, with Maddow writing the third email herself. Maddow wrote Romney’s spokesperson an email that included a multiple choice section stating various positions Romney may have towards the Paycheck Fairness Act.

“We have not received an answer to that last email,” Maddow said through her laughs.

******

So…what’s on your mind today? Blog me.

Norman: Your last sentence is what it all really comes down to.

Zen Lill: I was hoping someone would answer your question, as I didn’t have much time the other day to go back and find it. Thanks Peter. Hafa adai.

Lea: I am sure that the TAO is doing everything they can to resolve this before any anomalies occur.  I am sure, the last thing they want is for a typhoon to strike Guam, especially since The Princess is thought to be there. I don’t presume to speak for The Emperor nor suggest that I know how he He thinks, but my guess is, He may not see a typhoon as simply just a typhoon, but an act of violence, which would not be good for anyone. Peace & Love.
