Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

I have always been against people buying and wearing furs because of the cruelty and pain that is inflicted upon animals that are tortured and killed for their furs. The amount of pain and suffering that animals go through in their last moments and sometimes hours, or even days before death finally gives them peace,  is just too much for me to bear. I can’t imagine how a human can take part in inflicting such suffering. But then, when humans can do such sick things to their own, with little thought and care, why would I think that they would have more of a conscious when it comes to animals.

I have been so focused on womens’ lives and the suffering that so many women endure daily, (and rightly so!) that although my passion for animal livelihood and safety has not lessened one bit, I have not blogged about the atrocities that continue for my furry friends around the world.

I blogged yesterday about the humane officer who killed the kittens. Today, I am posting about Wonderful Women Of The World who got naked for PETA and their anti-fur campaign.

Warning: The video is very beautifully done and the animal torture is very cruel and graphic.

Miss USA Queens Say, ‘Feel Beautiful in Your Own Skin, and Let Animals Keep Theirs’

miss-usa-pledge-to-go-fur-free-btn

Miss USA pageant winners Susie CastilloShandi FinnesseyShanna Moakler, and Alyssa Campanella bare it all in their jaw-dropping new ad for PETA—shot by famed photographer Fadil Berisha—in a united effort to urge the pageant industry to do away with fur.

Every year, millions of animals—including foxes, minks, raccoons, rabbits, chinchillas, and even cats and dogs—are electrocuted, beaten, drowned, strangled, and skinned alive.

Despite knowing about the horrors that animals go through to make fur coats, some pageants still award furs to winners.

“I was so disgusted that I would wear this skin of this living being on my body and consider myself beautiful,” Shandi said. What would happen if that happened to a human being? We would be outraged. So what’s the difference?”

Check out their exclusive interview with PETA to find out why these beauties shed their gowns (and crowns) for animals:

These women show that the greatest role models and community ambassadors are those who extend kindness to animals—after all, you can be a queen without making innocent animals endure terrible suffering. They are taking a strong position to protect animals by choosing to be fur-free. How about you?

Be a Trend-Setter and Pledge to Go Fur-Free!

Fight cruelty by giving up fur today. Learn more about the cruel fur industry and make a conscious choice to practice compassion and spare animals horrendous suffering.

*********

Readers: Watching this video is torture for me. I am such and ‘eye for an eye’ kinda girl, that watching those who inflict such horrific pain and torture, makes me want to have them skinned alive so they too can experience what it is like to have their skin ripped off, enduring a slow and painful death. You can call me cruel and wrong for feeling this way but I can’t help it. It is the way I feel.

Please take  a stance. Give if you can. Pledge to go fur-free. And spread the word to help put an end to this cruelty.  Thank you!

And especially a big “Thank you” to the lovely ladies for being a voice for those that cannot speak.

Whose Skin Are You In?

To all of my Colorado readers: I am so sorry about the disaster that you are faced with. I HOPE the fires will be fully contained soon and that you and your families are safe and sound.

Peace & Love…

Humane Officer Kills Kittens

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 14th June 2013

Good morning.

I woke up this morning to a write about a humane officer who pulled out his gun and killed innocent kittens in front of young chldren. Yes, you read that correctly. A Humane officer? Really? That’s an oxymoron if there ever was one. Disgusting. Any officer who takes a gun and shoots innocent baby animals, and in front of young children, is far from humane.

Here’s the write from the Huff Po. Click here to watch he video.

Bob Accorti, Police Officer, Shoots Five Feral Kittens In Ohio

A police officer is under fire for shooting five kittens to death in front of children in North Ridgeville, Ohio.

The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wants animal cruelty charges to be pressed against Officer Bob Accorti, WKYC reported.

Accorti, who is the Humane Officer for the North Ridgeville Police Department, was dispatched to a home Monday after a homeowner reported that a family of feral cats was living in their yard, according to ABC 15.

The woman noted that the cat family was causing a flea problem that spread to her home. Her husband had already tried to remove the kittens himself, but they growled and hissed at him, according to an NRPD press release obtained by WTAM.

She told police that when Accorti showed up, he told her that the animal shelters were full but that the cats would go to “kitty heaven.” He then shot the five kittens, who were all between 8 and 10 weeks old, though the mother cat was able to flee with her life.

The homeowner noted that her four children, ages 5 months to 7 years, were watching from inside the house and started screaming and crying when the shooting began. The woman said she understood the animals were going to be euthanized, but she didn’t realize Accorti was going to shoot them next to her house.

NRPD Chief Mike Freeman wrote in the press release, “I have decided [Accorti's] actions were appropriate and have decided not to impose any disciplinary measures for the incident.”

He added, “Research and other animal organizations accept shooting as an acceptable means of euthanasia.”

The chief did admit that Accorti should have communicated better with the homeowner about how the animals would be killed.

Terese Landon, executive director of the Ohio SPCA, told The Morning Journal that she believes Accorti should be prosecuted for his actions.

“The kittens were just sitting there,” Landon said. “They didn’t have to die. They were only 10 months old at most and they still could have been socialized.”

*******

Readers: And then you have the NRPD Chief decide that the officer’s actions were appropriate? Are you kidding? No doubt, once again, were seeing the actions of little dick men trying to prove their manhood and manliness through the trigger of a gun. Preying on innocent defenseless creatures takes no courage and strength, and is sickening enough. And then you do it in the company of children? This proves to the world that you have no feeling…no compassion and you’re still the little boy that never grew up and became a man. It seems that is the growing trend with men these days.

I am outraged by this boy’s behavior, and the fact that nothing is being done…yet. I HOPE the town of North Ridgeville, and the animal rights activists don’t give up on this.

Peace & Love to all our furry friends.

Just Noticing: Observations of a Blogger

Good morning!

“Just noticing…”

  • …Putting an eel up your butt isn’t a good idea.

Eel Removed From Man After Getting Stuck, Chewing Through Colon

Do not try this at home. Do not try this anywhere. Just do not try it.

A man in China’s southeastern Guangdong province admitted himself to a local hospital after he reportedly got a live eel stuck inside him. According to British tabloid The Sun, the man inserted the 20-inch-long Asian swamp eel into his anus after seeing it done in a porn movie, and he had to endure all-night surgery to have it extracted.

According to a HuffPost translation of a blogger’s post on Chinese message board forum Mop.com, the eel reportedly chewed through the man’s colon, perforating his large intestine, and became stuck in his body cavity. A graphic X-ray image (seen below) shows how far inside the eel was when the man came in for treatment.

Medical team members reportedly said the eel, which was “simply trying to find its way out,” was alive when removed but died shortly thereafter. According to The Sun, the man is still recovering at the hospital and might face animal cruelty charges.

The Asian swamp eel — also known as the rice eel or rice paddy eel — is a snake-shaped fish that is commonly sold live at food markets in East Asian countries.

Although this type of eel is known as an invasive species in parts of the United States, this isn’t the first time that it’s made its way into (ahem) foreign habitats.

In 2012, a New Zealand man had to have an eel removed from his posterior. In 2010, a Chinese man died after his friends allegedly inserted an eel into his rectum as a joke.

An X-ray image shows how far inside the man’s body the eel was able to get.

African Queen?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th April 2013

Bookmark and Share

Not.

Good morning!

Here’s a write from the Huff Po about a white woman with her skin blackened to appear to be the “African Queen” on the cover of a magazine. Yes, you read the right. I guess the editor thinks there is a shortage of real black models to play an “African Queen.” Either that or she is a _________. You fill in the blank.

Numéro Magazine ‘African Queen’ Editorial Uses White Model Ondria Hardin [UPDATE]

It was bad enough we had to report on TMagazine’s glaring lack of diversity in its relaunch issue, which was followed with an apology from its Editor-in-Chief Deborah Needleman.

Now comes this racially-insensitive gem. Jezebel’s Laura Beck has pointed outNuméro magazine‘s use of a highly bronzed white model in one of its fashion editorials entitled “African Queen.”

We’ll give you a moment to process that information and pick up your jaws.

numero magazine african queen

Moment over. The young lady in the spread is 16-year-old, blond-haired, blue-eyedOndria Hardin, who is seen with her skin darkened and striking a pose for the French glossy. To start, we know there are plenty of white people living in Africa — butOndria is from North Carolina and we’re pretty sure white people in Africa don’t walk around in what could be considered a light application of blackface. With that said, the editorial serves as another sad example of how the fashion industry continually ignores or exploits ethnic diversity rather than celebrating it. And to think how easy it would have been for Numéro to select one of the countless beautiful black models (see slideshow below) and avoid this justifiable backlash and contribution to an unrelenting problem. In Needleman’s apology concerinng the lack of color in T, she stated: “a majority of fashion models are still unfortunately mostly white …” This may be true — Jezebel found that over 82 percent of the models used during New York Fashion Week were white – but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any black models available to pose as an “African Queen.”Perhaps we’re supposed to be flattered by the images, basking in the fact that our skin is so beautiful and style so sensational that even white women want to emulate it. Was that Numéro’s point? Doubt it. But if so, we’re not buying it.Beck summed it up best, writing:

It’s impossible to look at this and not ache for young women of color who want to pursue careers in modeling (and arguably, fashion by extension). When they don’t see themselves on the runway or in magazines, it could be very easy for them to think, “huh, I guess modeling isn’t for me.” Then the status quo remains, and the runways remain monotone. If jobs for “African Queen” photo spreads aren’t going to black women, what hope is there?

And we’d like to note that Beck is a white woman, which is important to point out for the simple fact that black people aren’t the only ones outraged by this issue. We’re not being overly sensitive or playing the race card. Not only does this specific instance illustrate the absence of opportunity for models of color, but it’s a clear message from the industry saying “we don’t care.”

What do you think about Numéro’s “African Queen” editorial? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section.

UPDATE: Numéro has emailed The Huffington Post an apology. Click HERE to read the statement.

**********

Readers: I don’t know about you but I am so tired of the insensitivity of people. And then when they get caught in their in thoughtless act, they seem to think that an apology means something. When the only reason why they apologized is because people called them on their shit. Otherwise, forget about it – if they can get away with it they will, and they will, and they will…How disappointing. And it isn’t the first time this magazine did this. So what is their excuse this time?

What disappoints me too is the model. Yes, she is only 16, but really…why not take a stance and refuse the job. Yes, I realize it is “money” that she is giving up, so it is not my position to play with someone else’s livelihood. But hey,  isn’t that what she is doing by taking away a job that should’ve gone to a real “African Queen?”

Thoughts? Blog me.

Mike, TM: Hey there. I HOPE your issues of getting on are over.

By the way, there was some great informative comments in yesterday’s post. Thank you.

Hey Howie: How are you doing? Yes, that would give me a little extra cash in my pocket, but this isn’t a “pay to play” place. Or maybe it should be – Your bill is in the mail. :)  On another note…That is very exciting news for Israel.

Zen Lill: You are just too smooth, girl. With respect to someone sitting in their car at their leisure, those people are perfectly fine with me. However, that was not the kind of person I was referring to. And actually, when I think about it,  a bad comparison when comparing them to my main topic yesterday, which is just waaaayyy over the top, as you stated. Confused? :)

Ellen: Amazing. They actually recognized your daughter, called her by her name and told her to come back on the weekend. I would’ve been furious.

Happy Saturday Everyone!

The Little Sucker Strikes

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 3rd April 2013

Good morning!

The other day, I was in the shower and I began to scrub my right shoulder, when I noticed that I felt sore in that area as well as around the right side of my neck. The soreness felt like soreness I might get the next day after a good deep massage. Then I noticed that I had a slight little bump, pimple-like between my shoulder and clavicle. Hmm…strange. I pinched at it thinking, I am in the shower, I might as well get rid of it here. (TMI?) I pinched it a few times and then stopped thinking, “This does not feel like a pimple, what is this?” I turned off the shower and jumped out to examine myself. Eek…it was not a pimple but a black thing or half of a black thing still left in my shoulder. It wasn’t all there but it was definitely a tick. I could see the little legs. Ugh.

I usually don’t get freaked out by these things. I’ve pulled a few ticks out from my beloved pets at least a few times. This time was no different but I did want it out. And with some help and a pair of sterilized tweezers we pulled out the remains with little effort and no pain – The little sucker was making my shoulder numb. A cleanse of alcohol and dab of antibiotic ointment and I was off to the computer looking up Lyme Disease. I had a friend who had contracted it from a tick and I wanted to be sure that I took all precautions.

Since I had read that it takes 36-48 hours for a Deer Tick to release the bacterium called a spirochete (Some articles say 24 hours and I didn’t know what kind of tick had bitten me) I felt pretty certain that I hadn’t had this thing imbedded in me that long. However when it comes to my health, I play it safe and err in my favor.  A quick trip to the doctor’s office the next day, two pills of Doxycycline, and I was assured that I had no chance of contracting Lyme Disease. (Click on the hyperlinks I have created in this write for more info) Yes, contrary to belief, we in California can get Lyme Disease. And funny, the next day in the newspaper was an article on “Lyme Disease in the California.”

Since I am big on prevention instead of dealing with the aftermath, and because I like to do things au natural as much as I can, here’s an article that I wanted to share to help ward of those nasty little suckers:

Natural Ways to Repel Mosquitoes and Ticks

Spring has sprung, and that means it’s the start of mosquito and tick season. For protection, about one-third of Americans rely each year on the chemical N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide, better known as DEET. But prior to the late 1950s, when DEET was introduced to the public, we mostly used natural bug-fighting methods. For example, when my dad went fishing, his bug-protecting gear included a thin canvas hat with a mosquito netting “veil” and a drawstring collar. Even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists DEET as “safe” and the most effective insect repellent on the market, many people don’t want to use it because of lingering concerns about toxicity. Safer bets…

It may sound old-fashioned, but the safest and most effective natural way to avoid both mosquitoes and ticks is to use protective netting and wear hats (such as my dad’s) and light-colored, long-sleeve shirts and pants. For tick protection, most people know what to do but sometimes fail to follow the precautions—do a daily skin and hair check (inspect parts of the body with hair very carefully—ticks tend to bite those areas most often)…keep pets off your furniture and bedding…and avoid brushy areas and paths surrounded by high grass or weeds (these are ideal hiding grounds for ticks). If you must spend time in tick-infested areas: It may be necessary to use DEET for maximum protection in high tick season (spring and early summer). If so, apply the repellent on your clothing (read the label for fabrics DEET can damage) rather than directly on your skin. Do the application while you are outside in open air, and use the lowest possible dose. Natural options to repel mosquitoes…

Oil of lemon eucalyptus. CDC scientists consider this plant-derived compound to be as effective as low-concentration DEET for repelling mosquitoes. Studies show that the compound can work for up to four hours, depending on several factors including how much the wearer perspires. Commonly called “lemon eucalyptus,” the repellent is readily available in sprays and lotions (follow label instructions) in stores and online.

Wind. Mosquitoes fly poorly in moving air. Especially during the height of mosquito season (spring and early summer), use a fan on your patio, balcony or any other area where you may be spending time. You can also plan outdoor dining and activities for areas with natural breezes.

Citronella. An essential oil derived from the Cymbopogon plant, citronella is an effective insect repellent that has been in use in the US since the 1940s. Citronella is available in sprays and lotions but must be reapplied at least every 60 minutes. Citronella candles also are available.

Smoke and strong scents. Mosquitoes are repelled by smoke and strong scents such as those from garlic, onion, marigold, oregano and scented geraniums. Anecdotal evidence suggests that eating garlic helps repel mosquitoes. Better: Light candles, such as those with citronella, during an outdoor event, and consider surrounding your deck, patio or other outdoor space with strongly scented plants.
