Trump: “What have they got to lose?”

Good Morning!

Every once in awhile I come across a write that is posted in my local newspaper. This one was passed along to me by my mother. Yes, people still do read the newspaper. Thanks, Mom!

From the SF Chron by Jill Duerr Berrick:

What have they got to lose? When will black Americans win?

920x1240

In this April 2016 file photo, Pastor Darrell Scott listens at left as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks in Trump Tower building in New York.

Donald Trump’s recent remarks to the African American community ring hollow, especially to black parents concerned about their children. “What have you got to lose?” he asks, suggesting that his “Make America Great Again” campaign responds to centuries of injustice.

But was it great in the 17th, 18th or 19th centuries, when African families were stolen from their homes, transported as cargo, separated and sold to white slave-owners in America?

Maybe it was great in 1776, when those rich, white men set about to proclaim “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Except that the only folks who got to enjoy those privileges were rich, white men like themselves. Not women, not slaves, not African American free men, not the Native Americans whose land was stolen.

So we’ll fast-forward, past the Civil War when some blacks were forced into the Confederate Army to fight against their children’s freedom. We’ll breeze past the sharecropping system that swapped slavery for servitude for generations. We’ll skip the lynching and the mobs that served to terrify children and families into submission once their “freedom” was won.

Perhaps we will land on the 1940s when the United States was fresh from its victories in Europe and Asia. But African Americans, who were systematically redlined out of the neighborhoods they wanted for their children, wouldn’t call that a time of greatness. State-sanctioned discrimination in housing, education, employment, welfare benefits or health care are instead the ugly shadows of U.S. history, times that should evoke in all of us a sense of shame — not nostalgia.

Maybe it was the golden decade of the ’50s? Gasoline was only 18 cents a gallon, but how was that great when an African American family had to carry extra gallons of gas, along with food for lunch and a makeshift chamber pot, because gas stations were often unwelcoming to these consumers? Or with the benefits of the G.I. Bill in hand, young adults were gaining access to higher education in unparalleled numbers, but more than 95 percent of African American youth enrolled in college were limited to black-only institutions. They were not welcome in the universities we now open to all.

Surely America was not great in the 1960s when our streets were roiled by rioting and violence. When communities of color, left out of the American dream for too long, and suffering the relentless abuses of strong-arm police tactics, exploded in frustration and demanded that we right our historic wrongs.

In 1980, about 1 in 10 white children were living in poverty; the rate was almost four times greater for African Americans. The disparities persist today. Nearly 2 in 5 black children live in poverty, and those born poor typically remain poor; income mobility in the U.S. is a greater part myth than it is fact.

Today, a black baby is two times more likely to die in the first year of life than a white infant. An African American child is two times more likely to be maltreated than a white child. A black youth is five times more likely to be killed by gun violence than a white youth.

America can be great, but making it so means creating equal opportunities for all children to get a healthy start in life, to live in safe neighborhoods, to access high quality child care, to go to strong schools, and to see their parents working in good-paying jobs.

“What have they got to lose” is hardly the political platform of inspiration. America will be great when children’s life outcomes are determined by their hard work, their determination or perhaps their generosity to others. America will be great when we realize the potential of “justice for all.”

Trump trying to take credit for Obama’s Immigration Plan

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 30th August 2016

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Yes, history does repeat itself. Here you have yet another white man (Trump) claiming he’s got a great idea…and yet it is the same idea a black man (Our POTUS) has already implemented and is enforcing. Just another example of a white man claiming something of his own, basically stealing an idea and trying to get the credit for it.

From Think Progress:

If Trump’s New Immigration Plan Sounds Familiar, That’s Because Obama Is Already Enforcing It

Screen Shot 2016-08-30 at 9.21.12 AM

Donald Trump has built his presidential campaign around harsh rhetoric toward immigrants — referring to people who cross the border as “rapists,” pledging to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, and promising to round up millions of undocumented immigrants for deportation.

But Trump is now attempting to moderate his position, going back on some of his more hardline stances. During an interview with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly on Monday night, the candidate struck a dramatically different tone, promising to implement a “humane” immigration policy that’s essentially exactly what the Obama administration is already doing.

Trump told O’Reilly that he would enforce “existing” federal immigration laws, promising to deport “gang members,” “killers,” and “a lot of bad people,” while allowing other people to “go through the process.”

“The first thing we’re gonna do, if and when I win, is we’re gonna get rid of all of the bad ones,” Trump told O’Reilly. “We’ve got gang members, we have killers, we have a lot of bad people that have to get out of this country.”

Trump even praised the president’s current deportation policies. “What people don’t know is that Obama got tremendous numbers of people out of the country, Bush the same thing,” he said. “Lots of people were brought out of the country with the existing laws. Well, I’m gonna do the same thing.”

Trump also told the Fox News host that he would not make use of detention centers, though it’s as yet unclear where undocumented immigrants would be held if he were to use a deportation task force to round them up.

“I never even heard the term. I’m not gonna put them in a detention center,” he added. “We want to do it in a very humane manner.”

Screen Shot 2016-08-30 at 9.24.04 AM

Trump’s attempt to put immigrants into two categories —cracking down on people who have committed crimes, while being more lenient on those who have not — is a shift from his long-standing promise to deport the country’s 11 million undocumented immigrants regardless of their records.

This policy mirrors what Obama is already doing. In November 2014, the Obama administration announced a tiered approach to target “felons, not families” through the Priority Enforcement Program, which purportedly focuses on the removal of convicted criminals rather than on deporting people who have long-standing roots in the country.

Though Trump’s recent statements are certainly an attempt to moderate his stance on the issue, immigration advocates wouldn’t agree that Obama — who earned the nickname “Deporter-in-Chief” for having authorized two million deportations between 2009 and 2014 — takes a truly “humane” approach to immigration policy.

Screen Shot 2016-08-30 at 9.28.49 AM

Under the Obama administration, even immigrants who have turned their lives around since they committed years-old crimes have been caught up in the deportation dragnet. Take, for example, the Mennonite Pastor Max Villatoro — who was convicted of drunk driving two decades ago, and pleaded guilty in 1999 to record tampering, but later became an upstanding citizen in his Iowan community. He was deported to Honduras last year anyway.

And as recently as the beginning of the year, the administration began terrorizing Latino communities after it authorized a series of immigration raids targeting some Central American mothers and children who fled their home countries after January 2014. Hundreds of Central Americans were arrested in their homes, on their way to school, outside of church, and even pulled out of cars as their children watched from the backseat.

It’s unclear where Trump’s immigration policy will end up landing. At a rally in Akron, Ohio on Monday night, Trump assured the crowd that he would still build a wall across the southern U.S. border paid for by Mexico.

Readers: Thoughts? Blog me.

Mike, TM: As usual you are in the know with some staggering news. I HOPE Obama isn’t the POTUS either. This will inevitably be a hard decision that unfortunately will have to be made. Alas with China’s HUGE military it may come down to that scary and horrific act. Be well, Mike.

Robert: Nicely stated. Isn’t it just typical of Trump and of his supporters. Like you said, …an absolutely classic case of “the pot calling the kettle black.” Speaking of…Craig, King, et al: Once again, false equivalence is showing face. There is no way you can compare Trump’s current connection, former KKK member David Duke, still an active member of another white supremacist organization, NAAWP, with Hillary’s connection to Senator Byrd.

Expose, Expose, Expose!!! (That’s a nod to you Craig) lol…

From Snopes:

“…Robert Byrd was a member of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1940s and helped establish the hate group’s chapter in Sophia, West Virginia. However, in 1952 Byrd avowed that “After about a year, I became disinterested [in the KKK], quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization,” and throughout his long political career (he served for 57 years in the United States Congress) he repeatedly apologized for his involvement with the KKK:

“I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times … and I don’t mind apologizing over and over again. I can’t erase what happened.”

In 2010, even the NAACP released a statement honoring Senator Byrd and mourning his passing:

The NAACP is saddened by the passing of United States Senator Robert Byrd. Byrd, the longest serving member of congress was first elected to the U.S. House from [West Virginia] in 1952 and was elected Senator in 1958. Byrd passed away this morning at the age of 92.

“Senator Byrd reflects the transformative power of this nation,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “Senator Byrd went from being an active member of the KKK to a being a stalwart supporter of the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and many other pieces of seminal legislation that advanced the civil rights and liberties of our country.

“Senator Byrd came to consistently support the NAACP civil rights agenda, doing well on the NAACP Annual Civil Rights Report Card. He stood with us on many issues of crucial importance to our members from the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, the historic health care legislation of 2010 and his support for the Hate Crimes Prevention legislation,” stated Hilary O. Shelton, Director of the NAACP Washington Bureau and Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy. “Senator Byrd was a master of the Senate Rules, and helped strategize passage of legislation that helped millions of Americans. He will be sorely missed.”

Versus:

“…while David Duke is no longer a member of the Ku Klux Klan, he is still an active member of another white supremacist organization, NAAWP: the National Association for the Advancement of White People. Duke, a prominent Holocaust denier (although he describes himself as a “Holocaust exposer“), also has a more-than-passing interest in politics: the former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives has run for the U.S. Senate, governor of Louisiana, and President of the United States. Duke has spent his life founding and supporting various white nationalist and white supremacist groups, while Byrd, by contrast, spent the majority of his life publicly disavowing and repeatedly apologizing for his early KKK affiliation.

There is just no comparison. I think if the NAACP can praise Senator Byrd and morn his death, we, the people, can do the same. Please get your facts straight.

Peace out.

The Emperor Has No Balls

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 28th August 2016

Good morning!

I posted this blog write last Saturday and then decided to trash it. Why? Well because I thought, “What if this was done to Hillary? How would I feel then?” This is not who I really am. I don’t want to go with Trump where the repubs have gone.

And then I thought, “Wait a second here. The Dems do need to go there.” I understand why they needed to go there, and why I decided to pull my blog out of the trash and post it again today.

Let’s look at Trump and the horrific things he has done that aren’t even close to this naked caricature that liberals have created of Trump. Trump does sick things to others all of the time.

Trump claimed Ted Cruz’s father was involved with the assassination of President Kennedy. (!) Even though, yes, these statues are a bit insulting it is not even close to accusing someone of murder, when we know this is false, but so far only the republican party has consistently accused the opposing party POTUS candidate of murder, http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/bill-clinton-says-gop-attacks-they-accused-me-murder-n577896.

Trump is as low as any despicable member of that party. He too, has followed that political line of attack against the Democrats during his announcement of Pence as his VP pick, he accused Hillary of getting away with murder. http://www.politicususa.com/2016/07/16/trump-accused-hillary-clinton-murder-disastrous-mike-pence-announcement.html

Trump accused Obama of being the founder of ISIS. (!) Ok, again, the statues are a caricature of Trump, but to accuse a POTUS of being the founder of ISIS is just ridiculous and a defamation of character.

Accusing Obama of being the founder of ISIS is especially grievous considering the fact that he had during his run for the Republican nomination accused the then President Bush and his administration of knowingly lying to invade Iraq. — But in the last GOP debate, Republican candidate front-runner Donald Trump took things to a new level. He not only called the decision to go to war “a big, fat mistake” (and, post-debate, proclaimed it “a disaster”) but also said: “They lied. They said there were weapons of mass destruction. There were none, and they knew there were none.” – http://townhall.com/columnists/larryelder/2016/02/18/trump-bush-administration-knowingly-lied-about-iraq-war-intel-n2120851

In full disclosure mode, I will admit that I too think that Bush and Cheney started the Iraq war to make a killing in their investments in Military industrial company stocks. Whatever their reasons were the American people now know that the Bush administration lied to get America to illegally attack the sovereign country of Iraq.

The “Shock and Awe” Bush and Cheney has been so proud of caused the dislocation, maiming and death of tens of MILLIONS of innocent people in Iraq. There used to be millions of Christians in Iraq before the Bush invasion. —Here’s also the short truth you won’t hear from the hard right: It wasn’t long after the US invasion that Iraqi Christians starting fleeing the country. Many women and girls were drug into the streets and raped or killed. They were also sold into slavery. Petitions for the Bush administration to do something, do anything to help, were circulated starting in 2003 to no avail. No one in the USA who had the power to do anything seemed to care.”— http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/08/08/1320161/-Plight-of-Christians-in-Iraq-Began-When-GW-Bush-Invaded-in-March-2003-Obama-Urged-Action-in-2007

Bush’s destruction of Iraq’s government which acted as a control over the Shiites, released them to become head of the government of Iraq. —As President Obama struggles to deal with the crisis in Iraq, it’s useful to remember who gave the world this cauldron of woe in the first place: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Their decision to launch a foolish and unwarranted invasion in 2003, toppling Saddam Hussein and destroying any vestige of the Iraqi state, is directly responsible for the chaos we see today, including the rapid advance of the well-armed jihadist militia that calls itself the Islamic State.”https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/eugene-robinson-paying-for-bushs-2003-invasion-of-iraq/2014/08/11/2eee77ac-218a-11e4-86ca-6f03cbd15c1a_story.html?utm_term=.d3adfc319682

A militarily astute group of Sunnis, who had been the head of the government of Iraq under Sadam, felt abandoned. The Shiites who Bush placed at the head of the government of Iraq, began to torture, terrorize and murder the Sunnis by the tens of thousands. As a result,  the Sunnis aligned themselves with ISIS in self defense. Now we have a militarily, battle heartened cadre of officers who demonstrated that capability by routing the American backed Iraqi Shiite army. http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/10/world/meast/iraq-violence/index.html

That cadre of Sunnis make up the ISIS army that has wrecked havoc across the Middle East. The problem for the West is ISIS has mutated into an insane group determined to avenge itself against the West who they feel is responsible for the millions of dead and displaced Sunnis across the Middle East.

That brings us back to Trump. There is a difference between the person who hits first (Trump and the republicans) and the reaction to their attack (The Democrats, including moi). The Dems didn’t start this low degenerate stuff. Trump did. And the repubs cannot claim innocence, because they sat back and said nothing. The Democrats have a history of cowering under the salacious attacks launched against them by the republicans.

This girl cowers before no one. I will never start nastiness, but if you bring it, I will do my best to finish it. So my caveat to mean, evil people is “bring it only if you can handle my reply.”

Yes, I took my blog write down but I realized a retaliatory act is not the same as an initial attack. The Republicans use the argument of false equivalency to arrive at a fallacy in logic which claims that mimicking a disgusting act they perpetrated is the same as perpetrating that act. I say, don’t bring it, if you can’t handle the reply. Republicans can dish it out but they can’t take. So, Trump, handle this!

Here’s the write pulled from the trash:

I see that lips were flapping. How delightful that so many of you decided to go into the weekend kissing instead of blogging. Sweet.

I’m sure many of you have heard about this already but again, I couldn’t help but post this. Especially since it happened in my San Francisco one of the five cities. And to think I was just in the Castro the evening before Trump graced us. So sorry to miss this one.

Here’s the write from Daily Kos:

Naked statues of Donald Trump titled ‘The Emperor Has No Balls’ are popping up in major cities

Screen-Shot-2016-08-18-at-11.32.34-AM

An “anarchist collective” called INDECLINE (Twitter account here) are behind a series of nude statues depicting Donald Trump in his birthday clothes. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” these series of statues are called “The Emperor Has No Balls.” This is possibly the darkest story I’ve ever had to cover.

Cleveland’s statue is still MIA on Twitter.

Update:

The New York statue was taken down. According to the Gothamist.

Parks Department spokesperson Sam Biederman provided us with the following statement regarding the Trump statue:

NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks, no matter how small.

The best statement from a city official ever? Probably.

**Aahahhahah!**

Readers: Unfortunately the cities had to remove Trump. Oh if it was just that easy to truly get rid of him!

San Francisco lasted the longest (I think) – Trump was still erect…eh I mean standing, until yesterday morning! Woo Hoo! Thank you San Francisco. Oh, how I love my city.

Did any of you get a photo op with Trump?

On a serious note though was this a good idea or not? How would we think if Hillary was depicted this way?

The Interview: Rachel Maddow Interviews KellyAnne Conway – Trump’s Campaign Manager

Good morning!

I’ve been posting so many articles lately that I can’t even remember the last time I posted anything from the Rachel Maddow Show. Just because I haven’t since I reopened the blog doesn’t mean I’m not tuned into her. Oh yes, I’m still watching and loving Maddow’s commentary.

Last night she had on KellyAnne Conway, Trump’s latest campaign manager. And the first woman to hold the position of a presidential campaign manager. Kudos to her for that.

Here’s the video’s from the Rachel Maddow Show(Fingers crossed I pasted these videos in the correct order. :) I know…I know..there is a lot of them. They range from a few minutes to a little over eight. Pick and choose the ones you want to watch.

*****

Readers: I don’t know how Maddow does it. If it was me I’d be pulling out my hair. But she is the ultimate pro - Maddow is so savvy when it comes to asking questions and making sure her points come across loud and clear. She left no stone unturned in her questioning (the girl knows her stuff). And yet she does it in such a diplomatic way, that I truly don’t think Conway had any idea what was happening.

So what was happening? In my opinion, Conway was getting kinda crushed. Conway’s only way to handle Maddow’s skilled tongue was to either ignore or dance and skirt around the issues and Maddow’s questions, while she continually tried to pull Clinton into the conversation. I mean the only way you can you defend Trump’s actions is by avoiding that he is doing them. I think it was a disaster for Trump.

In the end, though it was all smiles – (Maddow’s was genuine, Conway’s looked forced and a bit out of sorts) - as Maddow graciously thank Conway. I absolutely loved it. Way to go Maddow.

Thoughts? Blog me.

Social Butterfly: I like him too. I saw a horrific docu about 10 years ago on the raising of factory chickens, and I was completely disgusted. I didn’t eat chicken for awhile. Any chicken. Now I purchase what I hope to be a chicken that is more humanely raised.

I wish my body didn’t need meat, or I would give it up for good. I looked into having my own hens in my backyard years ago when I was married. But that never happened. I did grow many fruits and veggies though – loved picking them fresh. I’m with you on having a farm. :)

Steven,William, Neil: You are very welcome – thanks for being here and reading. And mostly thanks to both of you and all your comrades for your service to our country.

Teddy: So delighted to hear that. We all need to be more politically savvy. Big kudos to many who comment here as they know they’re stuff. I learn a lot too. Thank you too for your service.

Shelly, Vivian: Thank you.

Scott: I’ll stand up and say it (I’m standing right now :) My uncle just spent the last two months of his life in the VA. He just passed. I love him dearly. He loved the VA and all of those taking care of him. In return they loved him and cared for him well until the day he died. RIP Uncle Al. Miss you.

Hmm…I see we have some residents of the Millennium chiming in. Debbie meet Donald. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Seriously, good luck in the suit.

4G: I thought the exact same thing! Really. Lol. I’m tempted to go by there and check it out.

Sally: I have a feeling they will. :)

Peace & Love

“American Humane Certified” Is A Scam

Good morning.

Many of you know the strong affinity I have for all animals. I speak about my beloved Lucy every now and then. With so much going on in the world with humans hurting and killing humans, I have neglected to post about my furry and feathered friends for quite some time.

Perusing Facebook, I run across so many cute videos of animals, especially our domestic pals. Last week, I came across a horrific video depicting the cruel and inhumane treatment of chickens – chickens raised and packaged by Foster Farms. I don’t buy Foster Farms chickens but I know they are widely sold throughout California and beyond.

I am going through a challenging time in my family concerning a beloved animal so I am extra sensitive over the fact that animals cannot speak for themselves and need advocates to fight for them. I’ve always been an animal activist and I will always be one.

In 2008 I was very verbal about getting Prop 2 passed which required, amongst other things, that by January 1, 2015, egg-laying hens raised in California be able to stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their wings.  It was a huge step in favor of the hens.

Unfortunately “cage free” doesn’t always mean that the animals will have a good life. And the label “Humanly Raised” isn’t always the truth.

Foster Farms suspends 5 workers after chicken slaughter video released

la-fi-slaughter-video-foster-farms-20150617-001

Foster Farms’ “Simply Raised” chicken bears the American Humane Assn. certification. An animal rights group, Mercy for Animals, released a video Wednesday that it says shows cruel practices at Foster Farms plants in California. (Foster Farms)

A video purporting to show inhumane slaughter practices at a Foster Farms chicken plant in Fresno County has led to the suspension of five workers and a criminal investigation by the sheriff’s office.

Mercy for Animals released graphic video footage showing chickens that appeared to have bypassed the slaughter knife and wound up being scalded to death in a plucking tank. Workers also can be seen throwing and shoving birds, while other footage showed what appeared to be overcrowding of live birds.

Foster Farms said it has suspended five employees and is cooperating with a Fresno County Sheriff’s Office investigation.

“It is Foster Farms’ policy to take disciplinary action against animal welfare violations up to and including termination of employees,” Foster Farms said in a written statement. “Foster Farms is reinforcing animal welfare training companywide and in its plants.”

The advocacy group, based in West Hollywood, sent two investigators to work at the plants, and they gathered hours of footage in March and April at a facility where chicks are raised for slaughter, and another where adult chickens are killed and prepared for market.

Watch:

“The cruelty that we documented at Foster Farms was ongoing. It was widespread and it was rampant,” said Vandhana Bala, general counsel for the group. The three-minute video, she said, was just “a representative sample” of the behavior recorded at the facilities.

One of the group’s investigators reported the situation to his supervisor and to a company hot line but saw no remedial action, Bala said.

In its complaint, the organization cited “an ongoing pattern of criminal animal cruelty that was permitted to go unchecked and uncorrected by Foster Farms management.”

A spokesman for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said the case has been referred to the agency’s agricultural crimes task force.

The revelations come amid a campaign by the group, alleging that the poultry company’s certification by the American Humane Assn. masks poor animal welfare practices.

Mark Stubis, a spokesman for the American Humane Assn., said organization officials met Wednesday with Foster Farms regarding the content of the video, which he called “surprising.”

“Foster Farms has worked very hard to create a culture of humane treatment,” Stubis said. “In the three years that we’ve been working with them, they have never failed an audit. This is an extremely rare situation for us.”

Those audits are conducted by independent auditors that check about 200 standards established by the association, he said.

“The certification program can’t stop one or two employees who break those rules,” Stubis said. “We certainly expect any certified farm to take immediate corrective action against anyone who abuses animals.”

Bala said the organization may take other legal action against the company and the association regarding the certification logo displayed on chicken meat.

“It’s a betrayal of both the animals and the consumers who are purchasing these products based on the existence of that certified humane logo,” Bala said.

Readers: As you can see, sociopaths live on the farm too. They start off torturing and killing innocent helpless animals and if they have the chance they move onto humans.

It’s challenging when we see videos of people who are perfectly OK with injecting humans with something hurtful – it has been done before – If people are accepting of that evil why would anyone be concerned about a few (10′s of thousands!) chickens being slaughtered by a knife and scalded while still alive till death?

But I can’t help it. My heart cries for them as it does for humans. I know that we are not able to take action on everything but if this pulls at your heart like it does mine I HOPE it inspires you to check it out and do something. Here’s two ways to get involved: Mercy for Animals.  Sign the petition at Change.org. Thank you.
