The Sound of Silence

Good morning.

From Think Progress:

The Most Important Reaction To Hillary Clinton’s Speech On Trump’s Racism

The sound of silence.

Screen Shot 2016-08-28 at 10.11.13 PM

Today, Hillary Clinton delivered a blistering and unprecedented speech, labeling her opponent, Donald Trump, a lifelong racist.

She did not mince words, arguing that his racial bias rendered him unfit to serve.

A man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the internet, should never run our government or command our military.

If he doesn’t respect all Americans, how can he serve all Americans?

Clinton cited a lot of examples to bolster her point, tracing Trump’s history of racism from the suit the Justice Department brought against him years ago for discriminating against blacks and Latinos seeking to rent apartments, to his embrace of the birther conspiracy to his comments during the campaign about Muslims, Mexicans and others.

Still, Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. Branding him a racist is a fundamental threat to the viability of the party now and in the future.

You would expect the leaders and elected officials of the party to rally to his side, blast Clinton’s speech as a smear and demand an apology.

Instead, there has been silence.

Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of The House, has two Twitter accounts. Collectively the accounts have posted 31 times on Thursday. Five hours later, he’s posted nothing about the speech.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, has three Twitter accounts. Five hours later, he’s posted nothing about the speech.

Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican Party, has a very active Twitter account. Five hours later, he’s posted nothing about the speech.

The official twitter account of the Republican Party, the organization supposedly devoted to electing Donald Trump the next President of The United States, has also been silent about the speech.

There is also nothing about the speech on the GOP.com website or blog.

Trump, on the other hand, watched the speech and was quick to respond.

Screen Shot 2016-08-28 at 10.13.48 PM

Trump’s campaign press office has also been busy dutifully attacking Hillary’s speech, which a spokesman called a “desperation play.”

But the campaign seems to have trouble finding prominent Republicans to defend Trump. Right now his site features statements criticizing Hillary’s speech from luminaries such as Patricia Bober, Oz Sultan and Alfred Liz.

Some prominent Republicans might not be criticizing Hillary’s speech because they agree with it. Paul Ryan, for example, called Trump’s attack on Hispanic federal judge Gonzalo Curiel the “textbook definition of racism.”

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse agreed.

Screen Shot 2016-08-28 at 10.18.15 PM

Sasse opposes Trump’s candidacy while Ryan has endorsed him.

But today, the most striking thing is not what Republicans are saying. It’s how many of them are staying silent.

*****

Readers: What can they say? Clinton’s right. It’s sickening how the repubs know it but still support him, albeit silently. If anyone believes the repubs are for country first, they need their head examined.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Thanks for being here with me. Something to say?

Blog me.

Susie, Ira, Zen Lill: You girls are all correct. It is way more than 12. I didn’t think it was only 12 out of so many on this planet but I certainly didn’t expect to hear 20,000. That is so disheartening.

Owen, Irene: Thank you both for being such loyal readers and for your love of the animals. They certainly need all the support that we can give them.

Dexter: I hear you. Their habitats are so important for their livelihood and for ours. I have always said that the Earth will be fine, it will survive no matter what we do to it. But the inhabitants will parish until another species is born, adapting to whatever our planet has become.

Akram: “Urge” comes from the word “urgent” and that is exactly what we need to be as a society when it comes to taking care of the inhabitants and their habitats. As I read the writes posted, including the one I posted, it seems the common denominator in the demise of these animals is humans and our activities. Bringing them to dangerous extinction levels though hunting and poaching or through destroying their habitats.

    that’s some scary shit Mike,TM

  2. Zen Lill Says:

John, scary as that info is it may be the game changer for this election.

Who the hell would want Trump at the wheel if serious moves have to go down? I def do not.

Mischa, in this case, silence is agreement, none of the gop are going support T-rump because they know she’s just calling out the truth. They don’t truly support his candidacy to begin with…luv the PSA tweet by Sasse.

    Luv, Zen Lill

  3. Mable Says:

Let’s face it trump is the typical republican except for his inability to rein in his blatant racism.

  4. Lois Says:

Michelle it is baffling why democrats don’t go for the jugular and tie donald’s racism to the whole party. There is no reason why they shouldn’t.

  5. Jeff Says:

Ask a white person if they want to live in a black neighborhood, for that matter, ask a black person if they want to live in that same neighborhood LOL… there’s a serious problem with the black community

  6. King Says:

The KLAN racist supremacist group was created by the democratic party and is run by democrats for decades to demonize and lynch African Americans and other minorities ,it is laughable and a joke that Hilary want to link a racist group created by her party to the republican Trump that has nothing to do with it ,Hilary rotten clinton said that her idol is the former Klan leader and former democrat senator of WV Robert bird. Hilary rotten clinton said that her hero is a former klan leader that terrorized and lynched African Americans a fact any one can check,Hilary rotten clinton cannot reinvent history or change facts that any one can check ,Hilary rotten clinton is using this accusations to deceive and distract young generation from the disgraceful and shameful long history of racism and bigotry of the democratic party and democrat politicians in the south .Today Hilary rotten clinton is supporting the racist black life matter group that promote shooting of police officers dividing and turning Americans on each other ,Hilary rotten clinton is the real racist and bigot Not Trump ,No wonder she is NOT fit to be president of US.

  7. Beatrice Says:

Loved that speech. Hillary did call trump on his bullshit. She did so using an litany of facts and direct quotes from Trump and his team. It wasn’t even like she had to dig very far back to find something to use, its mostly recent stuff!

Trump goes after her too the difference is that he will often say whatever pops into his head, facts be damned. If he gets called on it later, he was joking or sarcastic.

  8. Michael Says:

King#6, Yes, the “solid South” used to be a Democratic stronghold. Since the 1960′s that’s been reversed, and the Republicans have been the party of choice for people who want to “make America white again.

” If you want to vote for a Republican committed to racial justice, you can always write in Abraham Lincoln.

  9. Robert Says:

Hillary really needs to continue to describe the danger that Trump represents. The mainstream media will not do this for her. The media will only repeat the words that she actually says.

Most Trump supporters, and far too many Republicans, live in a fact-free mental universe in which they falsely believe that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are personally responsible for all of the world’s evils. This is absolutely false, of course, despite three decades of vile Republican efforts to spread such falsehoods.

Today, mainstream media reports have given prominent coverage to Trump’s truly absurd claim that Hillary Clinton is allegedly a “bigot”. This is an absolutely classic case of “the pot calling the kettle black” — yet today’s spineless journalists seem to feel so constrained by so-called “journalistic standards of objectivity” that they can’t even write the obvious fact that this is absolute nonsense.

Trump is literally a bigoted, hateful, ignorant, immature, irrational, hotheaded, misogynistic and racist pathological liar. He cares nothing about democratic values, constitutional principles and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

He would destroy America’s relations with many important countries around the world, abrogating treaty relationships and creating chaos and disorder through his bizarre and unpredictable actions. This needs to be reported.

Trump is a narcissistic sociopath with anti-democratic authoritarian tendencies. He is also a “vulture capitalist” who knows nothing, and cares less, about the lives, circumstances and concerns of most Americans. This too needs to be reported.

He launches brutal, threatening, insulting and humiliating rhetorical attacks, pleasing the violence-prone bigots who support his campaign.

He is a dangerously immature bully who recklessly hurls incendiary charges and untrue statements at all who oppose him, including mainstream traditional Republicans. This is what bigotry looks like. Report it!

  10. Donna Says:

King#6, How about speaking to the reality of today, rather than living in and appealing to the history of yesteryear? 150 years ago, the GOP was the progressive liberal party, and the Democrats were the conservative oligarchy. Those political roles have long since reversed themselves.

  11. Olga Says:

It doesn’t make any difference what she calls him. Trumps real problem is that half of all folks have an IQ greater than 100.

  12. Ruth/AF Says:

I like the womb on Hilary she went after the creep EXCEPT, she used factual information we all can check and she used the shit he has said in his own words. Again since they are quotes we all can check.

I too believe she and the rest of the Democratic party should be out there tying the rest of those republican party members to the donald.

  13. Julie Says:

Good for Hillary. She let the bully have a taste of his own medicine and bopped him on the nose.
The difference is that she used facts and his own words as well as pointing out to the public just who these extreme right wing nuts are that not only support him , but are running his “campaign” , such as it is.
One of her better lines was ” Show me who you walk with and I’ll show you who you are ”
    Bannon, Manafort/Putin, Duke, etc.

  14. Arnie Says:

The Trump playbook is based on lies. That is proven. Clinton’s speech was based on the Donald’s behavior (both in his business dealings and political life to date), his relationships, his positions, and his ACTUAL words and those of some of his supporters.

So how do those approaches somehow equate in the eyes of people who say she is acting the same as trump — other than some pitiful attempt to appear objective?

  15. Ava Says:

Clinton just obliterated Trump with that speech and it was not over the top, she was stating the obvious.

Donnie had it easy in the GOP primaries, it will not be so with a seasoned campaigner like Clinton, the debates would be fun to watch. Donnie is the type of guy who talks big but cries “Mommy!” when faced with a real challenge.

He has always exited stage left when faced with a challenge, like using bankruptcies to escape a failing business.

He has already started laying the ground work for his exit strategy by claiming the elections are rigged even before voting begins.

He loves to claim that he is a winner when essentially he is a loud mouthed loser and he has effectively stamped that tag on the GOP, the party of losers!

  16. Rose Says:

Secretary Clinton is brilliant! Great speech. Great delivery.

  17. Raoul Says:

Let me join the chorus and state for the record that “Donald Trump is an unrepentant racist.”
    LikeReplyShare8

  18. Grace Says:

Rose#16, That will soon be “Madame President”.

  19. Tony Says:

I’m surprised Ms. Clinton went there; basically the strategy so far is to let Mr. Trump hang himself with his words. She must believe what she said because the safe thing is to not get into it.

  20. Julie Says:

“The personal hounding of Clinton because of her use of emails is laughable. She didn’t lie about WMD and start the Iraq War, causing millions to become refugees, thousands being killed, the spawning of ISIL and terrorism today.

George Bush, John Howard and Tony Blair told these lies and were responsible for this with Neo-conservative war-hawks in the US. But those who call Hillary a liar ignore this.

It seems that starting wars is not as heinous as misuse of email service. This is a gross distortion of values and perception. In my opinion, the lie was started by Republicans as a strategy to destroy the Democrat nominee in order to regain power in the White House.”

    http://www.brisbanegoodwill.com/it-seems-that-star

  21. Millie Says:

False equivalence. Nothing she said was false. Trump just says whatever goes through his thick skull.

  22. Ramon Says:

Wow, just as Trump is calling Secretary Clinton a BIGOT (Literally) Trump supporters accuse Secretary Clinton of using “power of suggestion” while she makes a speech composed of his own words. How could she.

  23. Susie Says:

Tony#19, Well yes, let him hang himself with his words, but every once in a while, Hillary has to kick the chair.

  24. Ricardo Says:

“Trump has talked regularly about temporarily banning Muslims from immigrating to the United States, not deporting them. But Clinton suggested it’s an open question.” Trump’s policy, written on his own letterhead and read by him, did not say “temporary”.

It did not make exemptions for sports figures, returning servicemen, tourists, family members, etc. He even nastily tweeted… ““Obama said in his speech that Muslims are our sports heroes. What sport is he talking about, and who?” Trump tweeted in December.

Trump said mosques should be monitored, Trump said that there should be a list of Muslims in the country. Trump said that a Muslim mother of a dead soldier was not allowed to speak because of her religion, not recognizing that it could possibly be from grief. It never entered his head that one of “them” could suffer from grief.

So, sure, as trump supporters say, Trump did not say that Muslims should be deported. He just suggested that they should be treated like Jews in Poland before Hitler made the next step, “deportation”.

  25. Craig Says:

Hypocrite Hillary in 2010 praised a former Klan Leader, calling him her Friend and Mentor!
Now she wants to lie about Trump having KKK ties!
Anything to change the focus off her CORRUPTION AND ABUSE OF POWER!!

  26. Dwyane Says:

Just say it: Donald Trump is an unrepentant racist.

    It’s easy because it’s true.

  27. Sonja Says:

Craig#25, That was a very repentant Klan leader who apologized many times about his youthful stupidity. You are using the typical Clinton hating tactic of lying about the situation.

  28. Susie Says:

Sonja#27, They’re never going to stop using Robert Byrd…it’s basically the only thing they have.

  29. Craig Says:

Sonja#27, Nothing I said was a lie. Everything Hillary says is a lie!

  30. Jones Says:

Craig#25, Hillary spoke at Robert Byrd’s funeral, Trump has been endorsed for president by the KKK.

  31. Ramon Says:

Craig#25, You must be so happy that there is no age limit on posting here. Nor factual proof requirement,

  32. Wayne Says:

Craig#25, Does typing in all caps mean that you are serious and well informed?

  33. Connie Says:

    False equivalency alert!

There’s no evidence HRC is ill or lacks energy. Evidence proves the opposite.

There is abundant evidence of Trump’s bigotry. Daily.

  34. Craig Says:

Oh no. Hillary is in trouble again. So she decided to go ahead and “play the race card”. Any lie will do to change the subject from her CORRUPTION and ABUSE OF POWER!!
    Deflect Deflect Deflect#!

  35. Drew Says:

I love when racist Trump supporters defend their racist nominee by accusing his opponent of playing the race card.

  36. Mickey Says:

Craig#34, If Hillary is in so much trouble, then why is she so far ahead in the polls? Just askin’.

  37. Suzanne Says:

Trumps supporters are in for a long couple of months. Can’t say they don’t deserve it. Have fun watching Donald the Kremlin’s Dancing Dope go down.

  38. Ralph Says:

Hafa adai, I was at Ypaopao Estates when I came upon a surprisingly large nest of huge yellow hornets in a bush.

It truly shocked me as i stood in amazement…in front of my eyes wedged between two branches are big giant hornets seemed dormant and suspiciously lazily. I have no regrets getting a Blagflag immediately and made sure that they are all terminated!

I noticed the hornets are almost an inch long and their black and white striped rear end are truly dark in comparison to our local yellow wasps or hornets. I’m a jungle fanatic of nature and seeing this spieces ….it is totally alien and new to me. Furthermore, I was alarmed in fact.

  39. Anna/Guam Says:

Hafa Adai: Michelle I hope you don’t mind if I change the subject for a moment. My friend said that she knows the woman who put a “love spell” on a man for money. She claims that the woman’s spells work. As proof she sent me this article where a man is angry with his girlfriend because he can’t leave her because of the “love spell” she put on him by giving him a “love portion” to drink.

Will someone on Guam please explain this report to me?

In my mind, it seems that the article starts with a man arguing with his girlfriend because she has given him a “love portion,” but from there it is an OOG (Only On Guam) sense of logic.

    Hafa Adai
    Anna

  40. Anna/Guam Says:

Sorry I forgot to print the article. Here it is:

Boyfriend alleges ‘love poisoning’ in assault
Robert Q. Tupaz | Post News Staff Updated Aug 25, 2016
The magistrate’s complaint lists a slew of family violence cases filed this week in the Superior Court of Guam. The charges resulted from a couple of expected family gatherings turned sour and a love poisoning allegation.

In the first case filed this week, officers from the Guam Police Department responded to a Toto residence on Sunday.

The victim in the case reported that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend, identified as 37-year-old Robert Peredo Castro. According to the complaint, an officer met with the victim, who reported that Castro punched her in the face and struck her on her left thigh as a result of an argument.

According to the police report, the victim was talking with the defendant when he started accusing her of “love poisoning” him in an effort to explain why they were still together after “eight years.”

  41. Carrie Says:

Please do an article about that racist Francis Scott Key who wrote that bigoted and hypocritical Star Spangled Banner. No one sings the third verse.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
    —————————

In other words, Key was saying that the blood of all the former slaves and “hirelings” on the battlefield will wash away the pollution of the British invaders.

With Key still bitter that some black soldiers got the best of him a few weeks earlier, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is as much a patriotic song as it is a diss track to black people who had the audacity to fight for their freedom.

Perhaps that’s why it took almost 100 years for the song to become the national anthem.
