Afghan Woman Jailed For Being Raped, Wins Pardon

Good morning!

 The update on Gulnaz:

Afghan woman, jailed for being raped, wins pardon

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan has pardoned a woman who was raped by a family member but then jailed for adultery, a statement from the presidential palace has said, in a case that highlights deep concerns about women’s rights in the country.

It remained unclear whether the 21-year-old-woman, known as Gulnaz, would still have to marry the man who attacked her, her cousin’s husband, after an earlier release offer which stipulated they must marry.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s palace issued the statement pardoning Gulnaz late on Thursday, a rare pardon in such a case in staunchly conservative Muslim Afghanistan.

Her case attracted international attention after she took part in a documentary film commissioned by the European Union but later withheld.

Gulnaz had eventually agreed to the condition she marry her attacker under the earlier release offer but her lawyer said the release granted this week did not depend on her going through with the marriage.

It was not clear whether she still intended to marry the man, her lawyer, Kimberley Motley, said. Her attacker is serving a 7-year prison term for the crime.

Motley said she hoped her client would be released shortly, and that there was a place for her in a women’s shelter.

The palace statement said Justice Minister Habibullah Ghalib asked a panel of top legal officials to order her release. Gulnaz sought a pardon from Karzai earlier this week.

“After assessing Gulnaz’s case, (they) decided that her remaining sentence in jail should be pardoned under the current rules and regulations of the country and she should be released,” the palace statement said.

Gulnaz was initially sentenced to two years in jail for “adultery by force,” which was later increased to 12 years on appeal. She was given the choice of marriage or serving a jail sentence.

Her sentence was then cut to three years after a third appeal, and the requirement for her to marry was dropped.

Gulnaz became pregnant as a result of the attack and gave birth to a daughter in the Badam Bagh women’s prison in Kabul almost a year ago.

Motley also welcomed what she said was a decision to review the cases of other women in the same jail.

“The judiciary has effectively supported the Elimination of Violence Against Women Act by allowing for her to be released, for allowing for her to be pardoned,” Motley said.

“Precedent definitely has been set. As I understand it, the judiciary today was also reviewing the files of other women in Badam Bagh,” she said.

The presidential palace declined to comment on whether other cases were under review.

FILM BLOCKED

The film in which Gulnaz featured, a documentary on women in prison, was blocked from release by the EU mission in Afghanistan over fears it might compromise the safety of the women involved because it showed their identity.

The film-makers have been pushing for the film to be released, and say Gulnaz wanted her story to be told.

“I made a promise to these women that I would get their stories out. I am glad that I’ve been able to honor that promise to Gulnaz,” said the film’s director Clementine Malpas.

“I still hope that our film can be released, so people can hear the stories of the other women, and perhaps increase their chance of getting justice as well.”

EU spokeswoman Lynne O’Donnell welcomed news Gulnaz would be freed but declined to comment on whether the film would be released.

Gulnaz’s case had been condemned widely by human rights groups. An online petition started by Motley has been signed by more than 6,000 people.

Motley said she is still trying to ascertain whether the attacker will also be released if they agree to marry.

The white boy(thank you Robert,Rt) media uses the word “conservative” in this article, the way they use it to demand acceptance for their bigotry or racism here in America.

It is NOT “conservative” to use religion to deny another human being of her basic rights. The right of a woman to be treated equal to a man cannot be explained away by calling the treatment “conservative.”

It is inhumane, it is barbaric, and it is WRONG!. But by the white boy calling it “conservative” we are called upon to do what they do, look the other way.

It comes from sick racists whites being able to say “they just don’t feel the OTWs are ready to be treated as equal to the white boy” and the rest of white american simply called it, and still do, “conservative.”

That too is NOT “conservative.” It is racist, bigotry and Wrong!

And the funky bastards have the nerve to accuse any OTW calling them on it of “playing the race card.” Personally I’m tired of their shit.

    Oh, while I’m here:

Robert, you know who you are, I know you know that was a non thinking move. If your identity gets out the white boy will try to see that you don’t have a pot to piss in.

But that being said, if I lived in LA, I would have been writing in too. You are a mind I would love to explore. I’ll stop there to leave a lady a little room to be courted for her charms.

So, I give a shout out to the intelligence of Zen Lill for making her attempt to meet you. That white girl has hope yet.

Not to be talking behind your back ZL, so let me say if it had come to you to getting to bump uglies, Robert would have been able to Represent.

My personal opinion to any white girl he gets a piece of is – a ride on the Chocolate Pony(not ever black man has one) however short(length of exposure not time in the sack) is an experience you will never forget. Hence the expression; “Once you go black, you never go back.”

The rest of you should leave Zen Lill alone about switching lines after the train had left. She like the rest of you have lost enough having missed the ride.

A 15 year old muslim girl was found, buried alive with her hands tied behind her back.
Her father and grandfather were her morticians.
The girls crime? She has ‘talked’ to a boy. ..

  4. Myra Says:

Muslim, mormon very little difference. Except of course, one is practiced by a white boy.

It is the old double standard. Two cults that abuse women. One you can practice and run respectfully as a candidate for the President of this country.

    The other HELL NO!!

  5. Anonymous Says:

You’ve got to be kidding me…Muslims and their beliefs are so twisted. I’m Thankful that I’m an American Woman.

  6. SN Says:

READ THE BIBLE!!! Deuteronomy 22:28-29 says the same thing!

If a man rapes a woman who is a virgin, he’s gotta pay her dad off, and then marry her!

This ain’t Sharia law; it’s in the Christian Doctrine as well.

  7. ID Says:

Before too many more join in the Muslim bashing session, I should point out that this nonsense of blaming the rape victim and forcing her to marry her attacker is also old Jewish law.

Old Testament, Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 22. (And do note that I said Jewish not Christian law/belief.

Christians follow the teachings in the New Testament…or at least are supposed to.)

  8. Ellen Says:

Anon 5: You’ve got to be kidding me…Muslims and their beliefs are so twisted. I’m Thankful that I’m an American Woman.

Please explain to me how you feel so thankful that you are an american woman? Thankful yes, but “so thankful” no.

There is plenty of room for males here to allow us to be treated better. The equality is still very much skewed towards males.

    Ellen

  9. Anonymous Says:

How did their terrorist prophet mohammad treat women??

Well, after military conquests, the terrorist muhammad would dole out captured women as war prizes to his men. In at least one case, he advocated that they be raped in front of their husbands.

women were made into sex slaves by the very men who killed their husbands and brothers.

There are at least three koranic verses in which their allah makes it clear that a Muslim MASTER has full sexual access to his female slaves, yet there is NOT ONE that prohibits RAPE.

  10. Rosy2 Says:

All the holy books in the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) say to dole out the women as war prizes to men. They are very barbaric religions.

The only reason religious people in non-Muslim countries aren’t barbaric is because they have been secularized.

Secular culture and secular law are FAR more ethical than religion, because it’s based on reality.

Not some invisible temper-tantrum throwing deity, but the reality of what it takes for people to get along in a society.

  11. IFH Says:

The evidence – the only evidence – proves beyond any doubt that “good” Muslims are terrorists because your mohammad, Islam’s lone prophet and Allah’s singular voice, was a ruthless and dedicated terrorist, murderer, rapist, slave-trader, extortionist, and pedophile himself.

Islamic militants, al Qaeda, radicals, insurgents, extremists, fundamentalists (or whatever term we dig up today) are actually “good” Muslims, not bad ones.

These jihadists haven’t corrupted Islam, hijacked their religion, nor interpreted it incorrectly, and therefore they aren’t radicals like the press wishes you to believe.

While bad Muslims can be “moderate”, “not-muslim-enough”, and peaceful, they have ZERO influence because guess what?…the Koran tells good Muslims to KILL them.

  12. Zen Lill Says:

Alycedale, thank you is all I’ll say bc to address your further assertion re: my exposure to black men would be to address the question ‘are you still beating you’re wife?’ bc either way would be a breach of my privacy so I’ll leave it at that. Having said that this white girl has hope yet, yes, Alycedale, I bet you’d find yourself surprised if you sat face to face with me. I’m often misconstrued here and I’ve at times, invited it I suppose, you of all here should know that and I’ve learned that blog entries will never replace face to face.

The written word will always have my respect though it leaves much to be desired in terms of reading exactly what’s going on – there’s no body language, facial expression, voice (sound) and other senses that can and are engaged in personal conversation. I’m very sure you and RobertRt would be quite engaging in that way, though I can only experience this one dimensional way, so if it were you that asked the question ‘who wants to meet’ I would’ve just as readily written in to say yes.

If things turn sexual at some point with whoever – well well – how nice, though that certainly would not be expected by me. I’m quite a physical woman though I do not refer to myself as a horny blond – ever, if someone else wants to refer to themselves that way, I’m cool with it though I don’t want to be thrown in that mix, if we’re talking about me (in front of me or behind my back) that’s still my call.

All the chatter over religions and their ‘content’ regarding women – well, its all pretty much same same isn’t it? So, I’ll believe in something larger than all of us bc I’m not exempt from wanting a myth to believe in but organized religion, never. It’s men for men and it’s really no wonder to me why women often feel competitive with one another bc of this current situation. I wish it could be different and I will try to be the change I want to see and be and that’s all I can hope that all of you do. It’s hard for me to like men of certain cultures knowing what I know…and I wish women of all cultures the best in the quest.

    Luv, Zen Lill

  13. Zen Lill Says:

and I cringed when I read ‘wins pardon’ as if SHE needed to be pardoned for anything. Please…that man should be hung by his toenails. ZL

  14. Doug The Main Dude Says:

All of this religious “holy book” discussions herein simply points to the dogmatic issues that permeate throughout our “civilized” world. Religion is the opiate to the masses, and used as a crutch to inhibit people to actually think and feel for themselves and to feel, discuss and understand what is inherently right or wrong, and to act upon that inherent right and wrong. In order to make people believe that God had or has anything to do with America and capitalism, the US government instituted the words “In God We Trust” onto the currency, as if God had anything to do with the creation of either the money or the capitalistic paradigm.

Religion is a construct designed and orchestrated by men. At the time most of the current religions were created, the men creating were the rich and learned. The only men with access to information and education.

Old Testament, New Testament, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu whatever is the global secularization of the same topic, but bastardized and homogenized for the conquered and controlled peoples of that region at that time.

I open the forum for those who feel that I will now burn in hell…

  16. Lilly Says:

Alycedale, you’re still the Last Word on this blog for me. I have dated bedded and married a white boy or two in my 51 years.

Any white woman believing she has experienced true sexual pleasure in bed when she has only had the experience with white boys is sadly mistaken.

While ignorance is bliss and god knows most black women hope you remain in that blissful state and leave our black men alone. The truth be told. That is like thinking you are watching a true sports contest when all the players are white.

Any sport featuring white only players is a mediocre experience at best. The proof is in the pudding her darlings. Think of a sport that was once played by white boys only, and compare it to that sport being played today with OTWs in it.

They compare as adult pros playing children. However hard the white boy attempts to make his white heros of the past special, a black boxer said it best for all black players.

Pardon me While I paraphrase – those white boys who competed in a white only arena couldn’t hold our jock straps.

The white boy knows it, and if you have a brain you know it. But if you are happy in your ignorance, please this black girl says wear it well. We have a shortage of good black men. Leave’m be.

Fox News Host Draws Scrutiny Over Husband’s Ties To Herman Cain

Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren is facing scrutiny for failing to disclose her husband’s ties to Herman Cain on the air — despite covering the presidential candidate and interviewing his wife.

Van Susteren got a major scoop when Gloria Cain broke her silence to discuss the growing sexual harassment allegations surrounding her husband.

She has also covered the claim by Atlanta businesswoman Ginger White that she had a long affair with Cain — the latter segment being notably on the critical side.

However, Van Susteren has not mentioned the fact that her husband, John Coale, is close with Cain.

  18. Gretchen Says:

This is my first time commenting, I have been a thrilled reader for almost 3 years. Great effort and I wish you many more years of success Michelle.

Lilly, I’m a 51 year old white woman. While I have never had the pleasure of intercourse with anyone other than my husband who is very much the white boy, I must say that your estimation of that species certainly applies to this years republican male candidates.

They are pathetic! In a purely white arena, they would look pretty good. But next to Obama they are children trying to play in the pros.

I was an avid republican until my niece(bless her heart) introduced me to this wonderful forum for expression.

Then, Michelle, you got me checking in on Rachel Maddow. What an eye opener that fire brand is! She changed the way I look at politicians.

Her critique of Perry’s run for the presidency is my case on point for everything I said above so I will allow it to finish my post.
    =======================
Rachel Maddow had a good time making fun of Rick Perry on her Wednesday show.

The MSNBC host mocked GOP candidate for his latest gaffes about American politics. She replayed clips of Perry saying that he would go to Washington in November if elected president, mistaking the voting age for 21, and referring to the “New Hampshire caucuses.”

“When you think caucus, think corn cobs, Governor, think Iowa,” Maddow offered. She pointed out that the legal voting age in the United States is 18, and that the president’s term begins in January.

She also laughed at a clip of Perry marveling at a bottle of maple syrup. She previously said the moment was devastating for Perry’s candidacy because “cuddling with syrup” did not look presidential.

After noting that Herman Cain receives one-page briefings about world news almost everyday, Maddow suggested that Perry should receive the same briefings about America.

GOT DIABETES? THE EXTRA HELP YOU NEED

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you may think that you have a good handle on keeping your blood sugar under control… and maybe you do… but I’d bet you $100 that you don’t.

Why do I say this? Because research has shown that only 16% of people with type 2 diabetes properly carry out the recommended “self-care behaviors,” such as eating healthy foods, staying active, taking medications and monitoring blood sugar.

But I don’t want your money — I just want healthier readers! So here’s what you can do.

A new study has found that diabetics who get regular individual instruction from a nurse or dietitian do much better and feel much better.

    GETTING FACE TIME

To learn more about how much of an impact one-on-one instruction can have, I called Joel Zonszein, MD, director of the clinical diabetes program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

He took a close look at the new research, which was conducted in Minneapolis and Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was published in the October 10, 2011 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Participants included 623 patients (men and women, average age 62) who had had type 2 diabetes for 12 years, on average.

Researchers considered only patients who had taken a type of blood test called the A1C, which measures the average blood sugar levels within the previous two to three months, and selected only those whose A1C scores were above 7% –

that’s higher than what is considered healthy, so it indicated that, like the vast majority of diabetics, these people were poorly managing their condition.

These patients were then split into three groups — one group received individual education, another received group education and another received no education.

After seven months, the researchers asked participants to take the A1C test again. And here’s what they discovered…

It was basically “no contest” when comparing the results from group to group.

The no-education group lowered its A1C score by 24% (perhaps because they knew that they were being studied)…

those who received group education, by 27%… and individual-education participants lowered their A1C scores by a whopping 51%.

    Like I said, no contest!

The proportion of participants who got their scores into a healthy range (under 7%) was highest among those who were individually educated — 21% of those participants achieved this fantastic result.

Meanwhile, only 13% of the no-education group and 14% of the group-education group got into the healthy range.

What’s even better is that the individual education didn’t take up much time at all — it consisted of exactly three one-hour sessions with a certified diabetes educator (either a nurse or a dietitian) about one month apart.

Three short visits! The educators focused on topics that included all the healthy behaviors mentioned above (eating right, staying active, taking medications and monitoring) along with problem solving

(for instance, if a patient doesn’t take a pill, maybe it’s because he doesn’t understand why he needs it and what it does)…

healthy coping (such as if a patient is frustrated, instead of grabbing a bag of chips, he’s taught to go for a walk or listen to calming music)…

and setting personalized, action-oriented goals (for example, scheduling an eye exam once a year to prevent diabetic complications such as retinal detachment or blindness).

    WHY IT WORKS SO WELL

To my mind, it’s exciting, but also a little curious, that such a little bit of one-on-one education can go such a long way.

After all, these weren’t newbies — these were people who had had diabetes and had been under doctors’ care for it for many years.

I asked Dr. Zonszein to comment on this, and he stressed one word — accountability.

Having to face someone regularly and acknowledge mistakes that you may be making is a powerful motivator — apparently more powerful than just the idea of being healthy, he said.

“It’s also about empowerment — teaching diabetics to be in charge of the disease rather than letting the disease control them,” he added.

And there’s another, slightly darker side to all this — doctors aren’t typically trained to give appropriate diabetes education, and they aren’t reimbursed for the time they spend educating patients about it, as Dr. Zonszein noted.

So in too many cases, after an initial diagnosis and a hastily written prescription, patients are essentially sent out into the cold to muddle through on their own — not a shining example of great health care.

So, what can you do for you? In Dr. Zonszein’s opinion, the best diabetes education programs are hospital-based with certification from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), since these are regularly evaluated to ensure that they meet high standards.

To find one in your area, check the ADA’s site, http://www.Diabetes.org.

Call the programs in your area and ask them specifically if they offer one-on-one instruction, what it costs and whether it is covered by insurance.

Dr. Zonszein suggests trying one-on-one counseling for at least three months. (If it were me, I’d try it for my whole life!)

At the very least, don’t assume that you already know all that you need to know about managing your diabetes —

So let us get this straight: presidential candidates can appear on Jay Leno, David Letterman, The Daily Show, The View, and even Saturday Night Live, but they can’t answer questions from a Republican media mega star whose season finale ratings on NBC eclipse the nightly audiences of Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Greta Van Susteren—combined?

    Puhleeze.

And we wonder why conservatives get tagged as overly stuffy, uncool, and out of touch with popular culture.

Donald Trump is an American icon. Love him or hate him, the man has more name recognition than certainly any GOP candidate (and likely more than all of them combined).

He’s also a ratings magnet precisely because he says what many people think but are too afraid to say. That’s precisely why he’s the kind of guy who should moderate a debate.

Trump will force the candidates out of their boxes and not allow them to dodge questions and spin responses.

It’s a new media world, and those who don’t make dust eat dust. That’s why candidates all line up to appear on late night talk shows hosted by comedians.

Republican candidates would do well to go where the action is, have some fun with a smile, and showcase their ability to speak to multiple audiences alongside one of America’s most recognized celebrities and businessmen.

Bottom line: We at HUMAN EVENTS have no problem with Donald Trump moderating a GOP debate. Here are more reasons why.

Grechen, I’m a 49 year old ex republican white woman and your tag on this crop of republicans was nailed. Here’s my contribution for case on point. A quote by Arianna Huffington:
    =====================
Arianna Huffington: Now that Herman Cain has “suspended his campaign,” the race is down to three people: Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich.

At this point, the question isn’t so much whether Gingrich can beat Romney (he can), but whether Gingrich will beat Gingrich. This task is complicated by the fact that there isn’t just one Gingrich.

He’s a very Walt Whitmanesque candidate — he celebrates himself, he sings of himself, he is large, and he contains multitudes.

And while both men are serial flip-floppers, the differentiating variable between them isn’t consistency; it’s conviction.

Whereas Romney tries to reconcile his flip-flops with lawyerly logic, Newt has the ability to seemingly believe each of his contradictory positions with absolute conviction.

And for better or worse — usually worse — the natural selection of our political process strongly favors that trait.
    ===================
It is interesting that the media knows that he is a dishonest flake but they make no judgement on his qualifications to be President.

Sort of infers that we expect our president to be liars.

In Egypt, the more moderate Muslim Brotherhood is in the lead so far, with about 37 percent of the vote, according to partial results released Sunday.

But the hardline Al-Nour bloc grabbed nearly a quarter of the vote for the ultraconservative Salafis, who seek to impose strict Islamic law in Egypt.

The strong Islamist showing came at the expense of liberal activist groups that led the uprising against Mubarak, toppling a regime long seen as a secular bulwark in the Middle East.

The Salafis espouse a strict interpretation of Islam similar to that of Saudi Arabia, where the sexes are segregated and women must be veiled and are barred from driving.

The Salafis speak openly about their aim of turning Egypt into a state where personal freedoms, including freedom of speech, women’s dress and art, are constrained by Islamic law.

Yes, you can cite old jewish testament to claim that Israel treats women the same as those barbaric regimes in the Middle East, but can you cite an occurrence of justice that shows that women in the Middle East have access to fair justice, as the women of Israel.

JERUSALEM — Israel’s former president, Moshe Katsav, heads to prison on Wednesday to begin serving a seven-year term for his conviction in a landmark rape case that both entranced and appalled the nation.

Katsav is expected to leave his home in the southern town of Kiryat Malachi on Wednesday morning and make the one-hour trek to Maasiyahu Prison, a minimum-security facility outside Tel Aviv. He becomes the highest-ranking former Israeli official ever to be placed behind bars.

Katsav, 66, was convicted a year ago of raping a former employee while he was a Cabinet minister and sexually harassing two other women during his presidency, from 2000 to 2007. Katsav, who has repeatedly professed his innocence, remained free while he appealed. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction last month and ordered him to begin serving his sentence.

Prison officials say Katsav will be placed in a special section of Maasiyahu reserved for observant Jews.

His conditions will be a far cry from the luxurious presidential mansion that he once inhabited.

“Moshe Katsav will go to jail as planned tomorrow and will receive the same conditions as other prisoners,” Israel’s minister for internal security, Yitzhak Aharonovich, told Israel Radio.

Why is the Obama Administration So Devoted to Criticizing Israel?
by Newt Gingrich
At a fundraiser in New York last week, President Obama said his administration “has done more in terms of the security of the state of Israel than any previous administration.”

Is the President looking at the same record we are? Last week’s news abounded with evidence that his administration often coddles forces opposed to Israel’s very existence while his officials publically brutalize Israel in the diplomatic arena.

Hostility towards Israel has become a habit for members of the Obama administration. His ambassador to Belgium argued last week in a speech to the European Jewish Union that pervasive anti-Semitism among Muslims was Israel’s fault. “A distinction should be made,” he said, “between traditional anti-Semitism, and Muslim hatred for Jews, which stems from the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

” This outrageous attempt to dismiss “hatred for Jews” as a political problem should have immediately disqualified the ambassador from continuing to serve in President’s administration.

Also last week, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta declared that Israel needed to “just get to the damn table” with Palestinians, implying that Israel is the primary obstacle to Middle East peace.

Who is it, exactly, that Israel needs to “get to the damn table” with? Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, has stopped short of even recognizing Israel’s right to exist. He has also repeatedly insisted that Israel abandon its right to defend its borders even after a Palestinian state is created.
