Justice for Trayvon Martin

Good morning,

Like so many others who continue to write about Trayvon Martin…and like many others who are demanding justice for this young boy, I too support the family and friends, by giving this very important story more blog time. It is through the internet…through community etc., that we voice our outrage and continue to support so that justice is served and peace comes to this family.

SANFORD, Fla. – Spurred by social media and community rallies, the shooting death of a 17-year-old Florida youth has become the latest flashpoint over how young black men are perceived in the United States.

  • Rev. Glenn Dames leads people in prayer at the Titusville (Fla.) Courthouse on Sunday at a rally demanding justice for Trayvon Martin.By Craig Rubadoux, Florida Today via APRev. Glenn Dames leads people in prayer at the Titusville (Fla.) Courthouse on Sunday at a rally demanding justice for Trayvon Martin.

Trayvon Martin‘s death Feb. 26 at the hands of a Neighborhood Watch leader in this small, gated Florida community has rippled through many corners of the nation’s justice and political system and raised questions about the relationship between the black community and police in small towns.

Trayvon Martin was talking on his cell phone when he was shot and killed in February.

•Ignited protests, including a “Million Hoodie March” in New York City planned today, a protest Wednesday outside the Florida Division of Licensing, urging state officials to withdraw George Zimmerman’s concealed weapons permit and a rally Thursday in Sanford led by civil rights activist Al Sharpton;

•Amassed more than 600,000 signatures in an online petition calling for charges to be filed against George Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch captain who said he shot Martin.

•Prompted NAACP national President Benjamin Todd Jealous and local NAACP officials to host an open forum Wednesday in Sanford for residents to share their stories of abuse and discrimination by the Sanford Police Department. Jealous said Tuesday night that the information provided would be turned over to theDepartment of Justice, which is investigating the Martin shooting.

Zimmerman has not been arrested or charged with a crime.

The case has resonated for many who say Martin died because of stereotypes of young black men as violent criminals. The shooting is already being compared with high-profile and historic civil rights cases — for instance, a doctored photograph has circulated throughout many social media sites that compares Martin to Emmett Till, a young man lynched by white men in 1950s Mississippi.

“It’s not about these individual acts of racism,” said Mark Neal, a professor of African and African American Studies at Duke University. “It’s about the way that black males are framed in the larger culture … as being violent, criminal and threats to safety and property.”

The tragic case played out in Sanford, population 54,000, about 30 minutes north of Orlando, when Martin left his father’s home to buy candy and iced tea for his little brother at a nearby 7-Eleven.

He was on his way back in the rain when Zimmerman, 28, spotted him. Zimmerman was armed as he patroled the area in his car in response to several break-ins in the community.

Zimmerman called 911 to report a suspicious person, according to the call released by Sanford emergency dispatch. Against the advice of the 911 dispatcher, Zimmerman followed Martin, according to the 911 recording.

The two men fought and Trayvon Martin was left dead. Zimmerman told the Sanford police that he shot the teen in self-defense because he was fearful for his life. The police have said there is no evidence to contradict Zimmerman’s claims. Police say Zimmerman was bleeding from his nose and the back of his head.

Tallahassee criminal defense attorney Devron Brown, left, speaks with Florida Gov. Rick Scott regarding the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. The FBI opened an investigation into the death of Martin, and the local state attorney announced that he had asked a grand jury to investigate.

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly. In a statement, his father, Robert, said, “The portrayal of George Zimmerman in the media, as well as the series of events that led to the tragic shooting are false and extremely misleading. … George is a Spanish-speaking minority with many black family members and friends. He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever.”

Outrage in Sanford

The fatal shooting touched a chord of community outrage in Sanford on Tuesday night. The killing was “a senseless murder as far as we are concerned,” Seminole County NAACP President Clayton Turner told a capacity crowd at the start of a town-hall-style meeting at Allen Chapel AME Church.

Clayton said the Sanford city manager and mayor were unable to attend because they had been “summoned” to Washington by Attorney General Eric Holder.

“The line has been drawn in the sand,” Clayton said. “We as people of color are going to stand our ground. We are going to do it in a non-violent way, and we are going to prevail.”

Before his son’s death, Tracy Martin warned son Trayvon that being a black man in America could be dangerous.

“I’ve always let him know we as African Americans get stereotyped,” Tracy Martin told USA TODAY. “I told him that society is cruel.”

Those warning messages have echoed in Tracy Martin’s head since his son died.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said Tuesday that the young man was on the phone with his girlfriend when Zimmerman followed and approached him. He said the 16-year-old girl told a harrowing story that he says shows Martin did not attack Zimmerman.

The girl, whose family asked the attorney not to reveal her identity, told Crump that she and Martin were talking on the phone when he left the store, a bag of Skittles in his pocket. Crump said as Martin walked home, he told the girl, “This dude is following me.”

Crump said the girl told him that she told Martin to run. Martin ran, which coincided with Zimmerman’s comments to 911 in which he said the suspicious man was running, Crump said.

“Then she hears (Martin) say, ‘Why are you following me?’ and another voice say, ‘What are you doing in the neighborhood?’ ” Crump said.

Police actions questioned

The girl told Crump she then thought she could hear Trayvon was pushed and she heard a brief altercation, then the line went dead.

“This claim that Trayvon Martin was the aggressor is preposterous,” the attorney said.

Crump has questioned Sanford police actions after the shooting, noting that police did not run a blood-alcohol test or a background check on Zimmerman, but they ran both on Martin after he died. He said police took Zimmerman’s word without conducting a thorough investigation.

Tracy Martin says he wants Zimmerman arrested and tried in court.

“My child was profiled,” the father said. “He was stereotyped. We aren’t letting our son die in vain.”

The decision not to arrest Zimmerman was made by the responding officer who released the gunman after he claimed to have acted in self-defense, Sanford officials said Tuesday.

It was only after a growing public outcry expressing a lack of confidence in the police department’s actions that city leaders called on the Justice Department to review the shooting, City Manager Norton Bonaparte and Mayor Jeff Triplett said.

“We have a lot of strife in our community right now,” Triplett said at a Capitol Hill briefing where he and Bonaparte appeared with Rep. Corrine Brown, a Florida Democrat. “If we’ve made an error, I want someone to tell me. There will be no stone that won’t be overturned.”

Triplett said the Justice investigation would review all aspects of the case, including the police response and the decision not to arrest Zimmerman.

Bonaparte acknowledged Zimmerman was part of a network of local Neighborhood Watch groups trained by the Sanford Police Department and urged “not to engage” possible suspects or people they encounter. Brown said she was “not satisfied” with the initial handling of the case, agreeing that Zimmerman was not tested for possible substance abuse immediately after the incident and lamenting that proper steps were not taken to preserve possible evidence at the scene.

“People need to feel that the system is fair,” Brown said. “It just wasn’t handled right.”

In conversations with the Sanford police chief, Triplett said he believes the Florida law known as the “stand your ground” statute, which provides a broader interpretation of self-defense, played a role in the decision not to arrest and charge Zimmerman.

The law allows the use of force if the person “reasonably believes” it is necessary to protect the person’s own life, or the life of another or to prevent a forcible felony.

In the wake of Martin’s death, the law is getting a second look. State Sen. Oscar Braynon, who represents Miami Gardens where the teen lived with his mother, called for hearings or a select committee to clarify what constitutes self-defense under the law. He said that since the law was enacted in 2005, the number of justified homicides in the state has skyrocketed. In 2005, there were 43 such cases; in 2009, the last complete year available, there were 105, Braynon said.

“I think there is vigilante justice happening and I think people are getting shot,” he said. “This is an unintended consequence of the law.”

Social media’s role

Public activism has played a pivotal role in bringing national attention to the case and ultimately leading to a top-to-bottom review of what happened that day. A wellspring of social media grew by the day and became relentless, demanding that the spotlight return to Sanford. It’s the only way to galvanize people in such cases, says Neal, the Duke professor.

“If folks aren’t on Twitter tweeting stories and giving particular testimonies; if you don’t have artists doing videos on YouTube talking about what Trayvon might have experienced … I don’t think we get a moment where suddenly the Justice Department is saying we need to investigate this case,” Neal says.

Change.org spokeswoman Brianna Cayo Cotter said the petition calling for prosecution of Zimmerman was drawing the second-highest amount of traffic to the site since a petition was launched for Kyleigh’s Law, a measure passed in New Jersey in 2010 that requires drivers younger than 18 with permits or probationary licenses to display special decals on their vehicles. Kyleigh D’Alessio was 16 when she died in a 2006 car crash.

“We are seeing unprecedented traffic on our website,” Cayo Cotter said.

The attention is also focusing on the town of Sanford, which has a history of racial tensions.

“This case more than anything reminds me of Jena — of a small Southern town that played by its own rules,” Sharpton said. “Sanford authorities thought they could contain it. … Once it becomes national, they can’t contain and control the story and the outcome.”

The Jena 6 were black teens initially charged in 2006 with attempted murder for beating a white schoolmate in the town of Jena, La. After a national outcry, community rallies and online petitions, the charges were reduced.

Theo Shaw, 23, one of the Jena 6 who is preparing to attend law school in the fall, says, “This is another incident in which there is a presumption that a young black man has been guilty of something.”

    Hello Michelle:

You have my sympathies having to put up with men that are basically narcissistic sons of male assholes.

I know that you are very intelligent so I respect your decisions on how you handle their self-obsessed bullshit.

Take Al, he may or may not be a closet racist or misogynist, he may be Bi-Polar. But for certain his behavior is one of a man who is self-regarding to a fault.

The kind of man who defines middle aged cheating by men as a man having a middle-aged crisis. That, like Al’s explanation for his behavior, is pure bullshit.

Men have conditioned women into accepting that they are experiencing a “midlife crisis” by using pseudo science to justify their self-centered behavior. They are just narcissistic cheating sons of fathers who were pieces of shit.

If a woman cheats on a man, whatever her age, she is just a “slut,” or a “whore.” No middle aged crisis bullshit is afforded her.

Thank God, you have a blog that provides women the freedom to express themselves uncensored.

What the likes of Als show is that the boys(whatever his fucking race) can’t accept a woman’s opinion they didn’t give her. They hate you for providing women a place for uncensored dialogue in which to express themselves.

The Als cry foul because their feelings are hurt.

The Als of the world are not truly compassionate to the fact that women are losing everything that defines humanity every day because of the disgusting actions committed against them by men.

Oh, for sure, they can eloquently claim to be sympathetic to the woman’s situation but, step over their egoistic line which no woman should cross and you get the vitriolic hate spewed from them Al displayed toward you.

They become the victim. And women become the ones playing the sexist card. In their sick minds women envy the power they believe having a penis gives them.

Their penis is the egomaniacal center of their existence and the point from which all their actions emanate.

Men aspire for wealth, power, and control to give them the advantage over the next male for access to a woman’s vagina. So which sex is more preoccupied with the other’s sexual organ?

Every where on this planet, every second of the day, women are disfigured and murdered because they refuse the advances of men. In the USA women are beings who are controlled by the vote of men who have control of all the branches of government.

Hypocritically, the Als of the world profess to be for the woman’s cause while calling the spoke’s women, like you Michelle, the most vile names their pathetic intellectual level can conjure up.

Only a self-loving creep would believe that a woman would envy the tiny penises that even they despise between their legs.

As a woman who has had her share of dicks of all sizes, that lie that knowing how to use a small penis is better that having a big penis is pure self-serving and self-deluding rubbish. If you have the size that fits, then knowing how to use it matters.

But if you are inadequate in that department, it doesn’t matter how good a carpenter you are if the screw doesn’t fit the hole, you are just wasting time trying to make it work.

Al, of course, has discovered this. That is why it hit home so hard when you brought it up, Michelle.

    Al:
Whatever protest you make will avail you nothing, men and women know that you have come up short on this subject in more ways than one.

So take your meds and come back with that apology. But your rant has served its purpose. You have shown light on the vain thought processes of men that contribute to the terrifying state of women today.

Michelle, don’t allow your libido to suffer. If you and Doug are through in that category, then get back on that horse a make a run for the roses.

You deserve to keep the balance mother nature provided you. Remember you are waking to the prime of your sexual life while men of your age are withering in a state of sexual decline. They peaked in their teens.
    Hello Michelle:

Get some young stud that can appreciate you and handle your sexual needs. If he displeases you kick him to the curb. Harris knows that I love him to distraction, but if he dissed me I would kick him to the curb in the proverbial hot minute.

I will never be an apologist for the misbehavior of men towards women. The old canard that “women do it too” may be true about every other human behavior but when used to compare the way men treat women to how women treat men it has no place in the conversation. Only a woman whose self-esteem has yet to be truly realized would even attempt to float that lie.

There is no comparison between the terror inflicted upon women by men to the occasional similar acts of women toward men. Even if a woman wanted to treat men in such a despicable fashion they lack the physical power or the legal power of men to do it on the scale men do.

Any woman who stoops to make the comparison is simply a pawn of the psychological bullshit perpetrated by men in the guise of scientific fact.

Common sense says men kill, murder, torture, and humiliate women tens of thousands of times a day more than women ever do to men.

I say to women of this blog, when a woman claims “women do it too,” pay no attention to the idiot citing the half of one percent of the times a woman’s behavior mimics the disgusting actions of men.

Don’t bother to argue with the idiot. She can’t be helped.

    Ruth

Anonz, that info about the Right is just scary. I hope Obama has the same info and gets down to matching those funds.

  3. Social Butterfly Says:

    Right on Ruth!

  4. Anonymous Says:

President Obama may not need his own TV ads. He could just replay the Republican debates, 30 seconds at a time.

The Republicans would have left the U.S. auto industry to die, but demand tax breaks for oil companies. They support President Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy, but won’t cut payroll taxes for the middle class.

They’re always too ready to go to war on women’s health – but they’re terrified of Rush Limbaugh.

No matter how extreme Republicans get, Democratic victory won’t come without a fight. Karl Rove and his supporters will spend tens of millions to put Republicans back in charge.

Our Senate majority hangs in the balance. Republicans only need four of the 23 Democratic seats up this year.

Right now, you can help hold the Senate by helping us make the DSCC’s $1 million goal before the March 31 end-of-quarter FEC deadline. Missing that goal could be all it takes to put those four crucial seats at risk.

The other side will have all the Super PAC money they need to attack our Senate candidates and tear down President Obama.

I won’t take it easy. I don’t want to let the Republicans have even the smallest advantage. And neither should you.

I’ll stand and fight every single day to win Michigan for President Obama and re-elect my friend Debbie Stabenow. And I’ll do whatever I can to help Democrats across the map, from Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts to Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin to Shelley Berkley in Nevada.

Remember, Republicans are eager to take over the Senate so they can have total control of Congress and ram through their reckless agenda.

They’ll cut health care for seniors and education for kids. They’ll cut job training for the middle class and slash environmental safeguards that keep our air and water clean.

I’ll do everything I can to stop that from happening, and I know you will, too. Together, we can meet every one of the DSCC’s goals and get organized to re-elect President Obama and keep our Senate majority.

    Sincerely,

    Carl Levin

Is this one of those big natural events you were talking about?

The Associated Press reports that a “strong” earthquake has hit central southern Mexico, rocking Mexico City. The US Geological Survey recorded a 7.4-magnitude in Oaxaca, Mexico.

According to Reuters, Guerrero state governor Angel Aguirre said that about 500 houses were damaged in the quake.

“We’re talking about more than 500 homes that collapsed, were damaged, and some came down,” Aguirre reportedly told Milenio TV.

History in a Bottle: Antique bottles are beautiful, affordable and fun to collect

Would you like to own a little piece of history? You can. Antique bottles are more affordable than most antiques.

Though the rarest and most desirable can sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars, many can be had for less than $30.

    HOTTEST COLLECTIBLES

Among the categories that have robust collectors’ markets…

Historic glass whiskey flasks from the early-to-mid-1800s are extremely desirable collectibles. Some sell for many thousands of dollars, but other relatively common examples can be found for $50 to $70.

Examples: An aqua-colored pint flask made between 1855 and 1870 and embossed with the word “Union” and clasped hands on one side and an eagle on the reverse side can be found for $60 to $70.

An 1826 brilliant deep sapphire blue flask commemorating the deaths of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson recently sold at auction for $100,620.

Medicine bottles from the 1800s are very popular because they’re so much fun. The names of some of the quack cures sold during this era are laughable.

Common examples often sell in the $25-to-$30 range.
Examples: This pair of R.R.R. Radway & Co., New York, medicine bottles, dating between 1870 and 1885, sell for $25 each.

Three early medicine bottles—“Dr. Jayne’s Alternative,” “Jayne’s Limimentor” and “J. Cristadoro’s Hair Preservative,” dating between 1860 and 1875, sell for $22 each.

Whiskey bottles made between 1860 and 1900 are popular collectibles. These usually are 11 to 12 inches tall, cylindrical and often embossed.

They tend to sell for $25 to $100, though very rare examples can bring significantly more.

Examples: These four amber western whiskey bottles, dating between 1880 and 1895, sell for $25 each—“McDonald & Cohn, San Francisco”…“J.H. Cutter Old Bourbon, Bottled By A.P. Hotaling & Co.”…“Shea Bocoureaz & Co., San Francisco, CAL”…and “Hanley Mercantile Co., San Francisco.”

Alternative: Whiskey bottles from 1860 to 1900 that lack embossing often sell for just $5 to $10. Some are made from beautiful straw-yellow or amber glass.

Perfume bottles from the 1940s or earlier can be extremely valuable. The best look like elegant glass sculptures and are prized as works of art, not just collectible bottles.

Deep pockets often are required in this corner of the bottle-collecting world—prices often reach well into four or five figures. Still, there are some attractive and collectible perfume bottles from the early 20th century that can be had for less than $50.

Example: The five perfume and cologne bottles, pictured at the top of the previous page, range in height from three inches to six-and-a-half inches. They date between 1850 and 1860 and sell for $15 each.

Fruit jars made between 1850 and 1920 are collected. Pre-1870 jars often sell for hundreds—particularly if they still have their original closures—but many fruit jars from the early-20th century sell for just $10 to $30, sometimes less.

Example: This Canadian aqua quart “Excelsior,” dating between 1875 and 1885, sells for $25 to $30.
Jars by the best-known jar maker, Mason, tend to be quite common and affordable, though Mason jars in rare colors such as amber can be worth hundreds.

Soda pop bottles from the 1950s and earlier are quite popular among collectors. Those dating to the 19th century can cost hundreds of dollars—as can rare Coke and Pepsi bottles—but many pop bottles from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s cost just $5 to $30.

Soda pop bottles usually have applied color labels (ACLs), where the label is applied directly to the glass, not on paper.

Examples: A Chief Muskogee Fine Beverages (Muskogee, Oklahoma) 8.5-ounce bottle with red, black and white lettering, made between 1950 and 1952, sells for around $30. A Daniel Boone Mix (Spencer, North Carolina) seven-ounce bottle with black-and-white lettering, made in 1946, sells for around $12.

Beer bottles made between 1860 and 1930 are collected. (Prior to the 1860s, beer typically was sold in pottery jars, not glass bottles.) Very rare beer bottles and beer bottles made before 1890 can get pricey, but many made between 1890 and 1930 can be had for $20 to $35 when their paper labels are intact—less if their labels are badly damaged or missing.

Examples: An aqua pint Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association (Norfolk, Virginia Branch) beer bottle, produced from 1905 until 1920, typically sells for $20 to $30. An amber quart National Bottling Co. (San Francisco, Adolph B. Lang), dating from 1885 to 1900, sells for between $30 and $40.

Milk bottles from the 1940s and earlier are increasingly popular. Because dairies are extremely regional, a huge number of different milk bottles are available.

Many from the first half of the 20th century sell for just $10 to $20, though there are some particularly rare and desirable examples that bring hundreds.

Milk bottles from World War II with patriotic themes and images are a popular collector subcategory.

Example: A Midwestern round red quart bottle from World War II with a picture of a soldier, Marine and sailor and the phrase “They Guard Your Home—We Guard Your Health” sells for around $35.

    WHERE TO FIND BOTTLES

Antique bottles are sold everywhere, from flea markets to eBay, but the best way to explore the hobby is to attend a bottle-collecting show.

A list of upcoming shows can be found on the Web site of the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (www.fohbc.org).

You won’t just see a lot of old bottles at these shows—you’ll meet people who are knowledgeable and passionate about bottle collecting.

And unlike some corners of the antiques world, bottle collectors and sellers typically are happy to chat with novices who ask questions.

Some bottle-collecting shows even include barbecues or breakfasts to add to this social aspect.
Alternative for the adventurous: Would-be bottle collectors who have limited budgets or a desire for outdoor activity need not buy bottles at all—they can dig them up! Lots of collectible bottles simply are waiting to be found in the ground right where they were thrown away in the 19th and early-20th century.

Spots include old (no longer used) dumps and trash piles. There are various ways to find such sites. For example, Sanborn Map Co. fire insurance maps from the 19th century, available in some libraries and chambers of commerce, show the locations of old trash pits.

Consider joining a bottle-collecting club that sponsors group digs to learn how it’s done effectively and safely before trying to dig up old bottles on your own.

These clubs are listed on Web sites such as the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors and Antique Bottle Collector’s Haven (www.AntiqueBottles.com/clubs.html). Bottles pulled from the ground often are in less-than-ideal condition, which could detract from their value, but they still are very collectible and exciting to find.

Why Obama is Absurd to Suggest Algae
    by Newt Gingrich

    Dear Fellow Conservative,

We knew the people writing President Obama’s energy speeches didn’t know very much about American oil and gas potential when he started telling us that some of the largest untapped oil reserves in the world couldn’t do anything to affect fuel prices. But we didn’t know they were quite this hopeless. When the President told them he wanted to focus on “green” energy sources in his speech, I don’t think he meant it literally.

That’s one of the most rational explanations I can think of for how President Obama ended up giving a speech in which he told Americans that the solution to the rising cost of gasoline could be algae. After all, he reasoned, “You’ve got a bunch of algae out here, right? If we can figure out how to make energy out of that, we’ll be doing all right.”

This is a classic move of the Left: observe a real world problem (high gasoline prices) and propose a solution that is totally disconnected from the practical realities of the world and has little chance of success (algae).

James Cameron and his state-of-the-art submarine have left Guam for a dive into the Marianas Trench.

After several days of weather-related delays, the Deepsea Challenger expedition began its journey Monday evening, said Ellen Stanley, a spokeswoman for the National Geographic Society, one of the project sponsors. Cameron is an acclaimed film director who’s also on the cutting edge of ocean exploration.

Cameron plans to take his lime-green, single-pilot submarine to the deepest point in the ocean — about 7 miles down — for about six hours to collect all sorts of scientific data and never-before-seen footage.

One other submersible reached this point during an expedition in 1960, but it was unable to explore at length.

“They were just trying to prove that the U.S. Navy and the bathyscaphe could do it — could actually do the act of getting down there,” Cameron told the Pacific Daily News during an interview last week.

“But that is not how we approached this. We designed this vehicle as a science platform.”

The submarine includes a mechanical arm that can pick up rock samples and undersea life, Cameron said. Cameron also said he expects the submarine to find numerous new species of bacteria in sediment sample. Three-dimensional cameras will capture the whole dive.

The scientific discoveries made on Cameron’s voyage also will be invaluable to the Mariana Trench National Monument, said Susan White, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife representative.

White is on Cameron’s expedition to help regulate the expedition to the trench monument, but she said the dive offers a rare glimpse into the unknown.

The trench may be a national monument, but most of it is out of reach of its caretakers. Finally, an explorer will be able to bring back firsthand knowledge of the monument, she said.

“If you look at a picture, do you get the same feeling as if you see it yourself?” White said. “It’s that sort of thing. It’s not just the visual image that is important, but how it makes you feel. And here we have a master storyteller who can probably do that better than anybody.”

The Marianas Trench was made a national monument in 2009 by former President George W. Bush.

Mother Jones has received an exclusive statement from NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous, weighing in on Trayvon Martin’s death:

It appears that Trayvon Martin was stalked and murdered by a neighborhood watch volunteer. In recent years, people with connections to the Sanford Police Department have gotten away with assaulting and even killing black men.

We requested and welcome the Department of Justice’s involvement. Trayvon’s killer must be brought to justice. The people of Sanford deserve to understand why the police did not lock him up the day the killing happened.

And the nation must ensure that this pattern and practice of people attacking and killing black men with impunity is ended.

  12. JB Says:

Except that the race or ethnicity of the shooter vs that of his victim is relevant in this case.

If Zimmerman was African-American, it is much less likely he would have viewed young Trayvon as suspicious just because he was walking around the neighborhood.

More sadly, had Trayvon not been a black teenager, he would have arrived home safe to enjoy his Skittles and ice tea. Race was a factor in this tragedy.

  13. Carl Says:

Before someone brings up the stat that according to the FBI and USDOJ, at least 94% of all blacks killed annually in the USA are killed by another black.

No doubt blacks kill blacks, but that not what we’re measuring here. We are wandering if whites/latinas kill blacks and how many. Get me?

  14. Carl Says:

The more and more evidence that keeps coming out about this shooting make me scratch my head all the more, i’ve called the shooter an idiot, but somebody needs to explain what type of idiot cop would could come up with the assesment that the shooter was justified.

I believe in the right to bear arms, but lately i’m starting to think that right should come only after an IQ test. And it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the police to take the same test.

  15. P. Smith Says:

I care, because the patterns, the precedents, and the foundation was laid for this to happen to Trayvon Martin long before he was born.

I care, because I have a 12-year-old, innocent African American son who believes he is equally protected under the law as a U.S. citizen.

I care, because I’m a mother who has concerns when I see this still happening to young Black men in 2012.

  16. PK Says:

I am not offering a justification for Zimmerman`s actions. I am pointing out that the real crime here is how the Sanford Police clearly have covered this up.

IF you read the above article detailing the amount of break-ins in the neighborhood, Zimmerman`s over-the-top actions are at least understandable.

He THOUGHT he was doing something right. And while his actions likely reflect the deeply-embedded racism in America, I think the REAL crime here is the way in which the Sanford Police handled the `investigation`.

Yes, Zimmerman `profiled“ martin. I am not excusing his actions. I am saying that the REAL crime was the way the Sanford Police handled the incdent, not even arresting Zimmerman IF the police dont do their job, then vigilantes run wild.

Focusing solely on Zimmerman and not the police dept is a BIG mistake.

  17. BW Says:

Not even an actual police officer would have had the legal right to stop Martin that night. So what right did this moron Zimmerman have? NONE.

  18. ES Says:

If I’m not mistaken the term ‘real crime’ here is not meant to say Zimmerman didn’t do something wrong and doesn’t deserve to go to jail.

It is instead an exaggeration meant to put emphasis on the fact that, while the death of a child, especially when racially motivated, is tragic and vile, it has uncovered a corrupt system which would willingly allow such an atrocity to occur without repercussion and in turn, breeds such actions.

And it’s hard to admit, but from an object view, it’s the corrupt system that is more pressing and more evil.

  19. Anonymous Says:

“”the real crime here is how the Sanford Police clearly have covered this up.”?”

Yes. Because if the Police intentionally cover up a murder like this, the implications are far, far worse than just some wing-nut vigilante.

This isnt just a murder. It’s a intentional police cover up. That is HUGE.

  20. Kim Says:

I agree — as a mother, I have always told my children to “run like hell” if they become alert to someone following them, or feel threatened.

Run and scream help, and it sounds like that’s exactly what this poor child did. He was out alone and a dude in a truck starts following him — what the heck would you want your child to do? RUN.

I believe Zimmerman wanted to kill this kid, for the sole reason that he was black and he felt the kids was a threat, for the sole reason of being black.

Would you chase down a kid? Would you chase down a young man, who you thought might be dangerous? Only if you knew you’d kill him when you caught him.

If I saw someone “suspicious” in my neighborhood, I’d call the cops and let them handle it.

How to Stay Connected to a Loved One with Alzheimer’s

The news that a friend or relative has Alzheimer’s disease is not only devastating—it also can be intimidating.

Most people don’t quite know what to say or do when they are with the person.

Yet there are specific ways you can stay close with the loved one and contribute to his/her ongoing comfort and serenity, says medical social worker Nancy Pearce, author of Inside

Alzheimer’s: How to Hear and Honor Connections with a Person Who Has Dementia (www.InsideAlzheimers.com). She offers the following guidelines, which work whether the person was recently diagnosed or is now quite impaired…

Decide to connect. Before every visit, think about what might be getting in the way of interacting with this person.

Often it’s our innermost feelings, such as, This is just so sad or This is too hard. Such thinking distracts us from being truly present.

Another obstacle to connection is how you communicate nonverbally. A person with dementia still can feel your tensions, distractions or apathy because these are broadcast through your stance and voice. Before you go into the room, take a moment and breathe deeply to release tension.

Let go of rigid thinking, and think about what is best for the person. Case in point: Pearce once worked with a 92-year-old man who every day anxiously asked for his mother —and every time was told that she had died.

Each day, he grieved anew. His caregivers meant well, but their concern with accuracy actually was cruel. When his caregivers realized what really was behind the request—the need to feel taken care of—they were able to make the patient’s life much more peaceful.

For example, when he wanted his mother to do something for him, his caregivers let him know that she could not be there at that time, but that they would help him instead.

Open your heart and enter the person’s world, rather than getting caught up in the nuts and bolts of the disease by asking about symptoms and so on.

Pearce knew a man with dementia whose longtime golf buddy picked him up every week to play. When the man could no longer hit the ball, his friend found other things for him to do at the golf course—drive the cart or clean the balls—so they still could happily share their mutual interest.

There was another woman whose beloved grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and as a result, the grandmother often was angry. After much trial and error, the woman learned that what opened both their hearts was to watch old movies together.

Embrace silence. When it comes to talking, less can be more, especially for people who may be frustrated about losing their ability to speak and comprehend. You don’t have to fill every silence with conversation.

Express gratitude. No matter how advanced the disease, notice and thank the person for all the little things you appreciate about being with him. You might simply thank him for allowing you the time spent together.

  22. What has been the reaction to the case? Says:

The case garnered national attention thanks in large part to the reporting of Huffington Post’s Trymaine Lee, who kept on the story since it broke.

It caught major national media attention last week, when the police tapes were released, and the New York Times’ Charles M. Blow and The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates argued that the case deserved greater scrutiny.

Celebrities like Russell Simmons, John Legend, and Jamelle Monae have taken to social media to comment on the case.

A petition at Change.org was recently posted demanding that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, the local state attorney, and Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee prosecute Martin’s killer.

The petition currently has more than 350,000 signatures, and had been averaging more than 10,000 signatures per hour.

The local state Attorney’s Office, which has the option of pursuing a case against Zimmerman, said this weekend that it received so many emails—more than 100,000—demanding prosecution, that the office’s servers temporarily shut down.

  23. Has anything like this happened before? Says:

The case bears faint echoes of the death of 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson, whose case gripped Florida for nearly a year in 2006.

Anderson, an African American who was attending a boot-camp-style detention center run by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, died during physical training that January; the initial autopsy said he’d died of complications from sickle-cell anemia.

But after civil rights groups alleged bias by the white officers running the camp, further investigation revealed Anderson had been physically abused and forced to inhale ammonia.

The boot-camp officers were eventually acquitted of manslaughter at trial, but Florida lawmakers shut down the boot camps, and incoming Gov. Charlie Crist signed an order paying $5 million to Anderson’s family.

The commissioner of Florida’s top law enforcement agency, was ultimately forced to resign after making racially insensitive remarks in connection with the case.

  24. Im a Transplant Says:

Florida sucks. That’s why I got the hell out of there.

When Trayvon Martin was killed, all he had were Skittles, iced tea…and a cellphone, authorities told the L.A. Times. The phone has been mentioned in multiple reports in recent days, and journalists and concerned citizens are starting to ask: Where is Trayvon’s phone? Why did the police on the scene of the shooting not use it to identify Martin, or contact his next of kin? “Trayvon’s body was bagged and taken to the morgue, where he was tagged as a John Doe,” writes African American affairs blogger Sandra Rose. “No one contacted Trayvon’s family even though police had Trayvon’s cell phone in their possession.”

The lack of information about Martin’s phone is feeding further skepticism about the police’s conduct, and it’s led New York Times columnist Charles Blow to start a new meme on Twitter:

  26. Nance Says:

    This is interesting:

Zimmerman violated neighborhood watch rules; traumatized teen witness speaks

Via Ta-Nehisi Coates at The Atlantic, who tweeted “There are 22,00 registered neighborhood watch programs. Zimmerman’s was not one of them”:

Zimmerman also blatantly violated major principles of the Neighborhood Watch manual, ABC News has learned.

The manual, from the National Neighborhood Watch Program, states: “It should be emphasized to members that they do not possess police powers, and they shall not carry weapons or pursue vehicles.

They should also be cautioned to alert police or deputies when encountering strange activity. Members should never confront suspicious persons who could be armed and dangerous….”

According to Chris Tutko, the director of the National Neighborhood Watch Program, there are about 22,000 registered watch groups nationwide, and Zimmerman was not part of a registered group—another fact the police were not aware of at the time of the incident.

In another development, the Orlando Sentinel has a video interview with a 13-year-old identified as Austin who witnessed part of the confrontation between Martin and Zimmerman.

(Austin and his sister are audible on one of the 911 recordings embedded in this post.)

“I just think that sometimes people get stereotyped, and I fit into this [same] stereotype as the person who got shot,” Austin worries.

  27. Police arrival Says:

By the time police arrived, Martin was dead, with a gunshot wound in the chest. Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose and the back of the head and had wet grass stains on his red jacket.

Statements by the police say he was covered in grass and blood as if he’d been on his back on the ground.

[16] He claimed self-defense, telling police he had stepped out of his truck to check the name of the street he was on, when Martin attacked him from behind as he walked back to his truck.

He said he fired the semiautomatic handgun because he feared for his life.[17]

A witness to the physical altercation just prior to the shooting stated that Martin was on top of Zimmerman and beating him up, while the older man yelled for help.

[18] Another witness has said in a TV interview that “there was no punching, no hitting going on at the time, no wrestling”,[19] but police say that that witness gave an official account to them that agreed with Zimmerman’s story.[20][verification needed]

The only things in Martin’s pockets were a package of Skittles candy and a can of Arizona brand iced tea.[17]

  28. Anonymous Says:

The night of the shooting, Sanford police accepted Zimmerman’s account at face value and did not test him for drugs or alcohol, although such tests are standard procedure in most homicide investigations.[

  29. Robert,RT Says:

Let’s connect some dots. The officer in charge of the shooting scene was the same officer that refused to arrest the son of a lieutenant caught on camera beating up an unsuspecting homeless black man.
    ====================
News reports noted that the police department of the city of Sanford has been confronted with allegations of racial prejudice before.

The police chief in 2011, Brian Tooley, was forced from office after the son of a lieutenant was caught on camera beating up an unsuspecting homeless black man, but whom the department declined to prosecute.

After the footage went viral on YouTube, the perpetrator, Justin Collison, was arrested.

The officer in charge of that case was also the one in charge of the Trayvon Martin shooting scene.
    ===========================
This is the officer who attempted to discourage a witness at the Zimmerman shooting scene who contradicted Zimmerman’s claim that it was he who was screaming.
    ————————
Allegations were also made that the Sanford police were protecting Zimmerman.

A witness who disagreed with Zimmerman’s self-defense plea stated that she saw Zimmerman standing over Martin’s body after hearing Martin cry out for help and stated that police only took a brief statement from her, despite her attempts to provide more detail.

Lee stated to reporters that they could not arrest Zimmerman because no evidence contradicted his story, and that to do so would leave them open to litigation.
    ===========================

In 2005, two parking lot security guards, one the son of a Sanford police department veteran and the other a volunteer for the department, shot a black teen, Travares McGill, in the back, killing him. They claimed self-defense, and the case was dismissed in court.
—-So how does one claim self-defense when shooting someone in the back? It really isn’t a problem for this police department when the victim is black and the shooter is white.
    ===============
Now for some real Just-Us justice.
    —————————-
Florida law, as of 2005, includes a “Stand Your Ground” premise, according to which a person who is in physical danger can claim self-defense in any circumstances, public or private, whether they retreat or not. However, the instigator of a confrontation cannot claim self-defense.

Since the passage of the law, deaths due to claims of self-defense have nearly tripled, with all but one of those killed having been UNARMED.
    —————————–
Seems like the white boy in Florida has given themselves the legal right to kill OTWs at will. Just shoot the unarmed OTW and claim self-defense. The OTW deaths have tripled.

Guess I won’t be calling you a white boy in Florida, eh AL?

But they go to the rescue of a white person that justin attacks after he has knocked out ware. Then the video pans back to Ware and he is still lying unassisted on his face out cold.

Mitt Romney won Illinois last night, putting to rest some more doubters in his nomination hopes. HUMAN EVENTS projects this morning that he will win 43 delegates, putting him in the neighborhood of 560. For those of you playing along at home, he’s almost half way there to the 1,144 needed for nomination. Math is clearly not on the side of Santorum and Gingrich, and at this point, they both need to win 80%-90% of the remaining delegates to swing the pendulum. It’s a tall task, and at this point, Mitt Romney is all but talking like it’s over. But, Louisiana is this weekend, and Santorum should put in a strong show there.

John Gizzi follows up on his stories from yesterday from Illinois where a bevy of House races were contested, most notably the battle in the Illinois 16th District where freshman GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger defeated a staunch conservative veteran Rep. Don Manzullo. As John pointed out, the race pitted conservatives v. conservatives, and the House leadership even got involved. Kinzinger ended up pulling it out, but predicts that Majority Leader Eric Cantor will soon face repercussions.

Any Republican governor of a blue state who manages to balance the budget without raising taxes should be a nominee for Mount Rushmore, to say nothing of president.

Mitt Romney was governor of a state so blue, it’s North Korea with more Irish people, and he balanced the budget without raising taxes.

Even Ronald Reagan raised taxes as governor of California, imposing a $1 billion tax increase his first year in office. It was the largest tax hike by a governor in the nation’s history, raising income, corporate, sales and inheritance taxes. Five years later, Reagan raised taxes again by another $1.5 billion.

To be fair, unlike liberals, he also provided tax rebates that, over his tenure in office, totaled $5.7 billion, including $4 billion in property tax rebates.

But even Reagan didn’t stop the growth of state government: While he was governor of California, the budget increased from $4.6 billion to $10.2 billion.

Republicans are able to contextualize Reagan’s record -– it was California! — but seem unable to contextualize Mitt Romney’s record, even though he had to govern a state far more liberal than California was half a century ago.

It’s election day in Illinois, and Mitt Romney is poised to capture the majority of the delegates in Illinois. Santorum, as many have pointed out, needs an upset to swing the delegate math in his favor. Without head-to-head victories, Santorum cannot hope to overtake Romney in terms of delegates, but stranger things have happened (like Mississippi and Alabama), and if Santorum does win in Illinois, Romney’s political viability is severely damaged. John Gizzi did a preview video last night. It is below.

Like the Manzullo/Kinzinger race we profiled yesterday, the Democrats have an interesting House race in Illinois tonight. Jesse Jackson, Jr. could go down tonight, thanks to redistricting. John previews that race, as well.

Contributor Robert Maginnis says that the U.S. needs a winning strategy against North Korea and that whoever the next president may be, he must not replicate our recent policy fiascos. A fascinating and prescient look.

And from John Hayward this A.M.: “The National Debt has now increased more during President Obama’s three years and two months in office than it did during 8 years of the George W. Bush presidency. The Debt rose $4.899 trillion during the two terms of the Bush presidency. It has now gone up $4.939 trillion since President Obama took office. The latest posting from the Bureau of Public Debt at the Treasury Department shows the National Debt now stands at $15.566 trillion. It was $10.626 trillion on President Bush’s last day in office, which coincided with President Obama’s first day. The National Debt also now exceeds 100% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, the total value of goods and services.”

IA boxful of attacks on women’s rights. A bagful of tax cuts for Big Oil corporations. And there’s an ugly lamp. There’s gotta be an ugly lamp.

When the moving crews leave, we’d have a President Romney or President Santorum with a Senate suited to the 16th century and Karl Rove and the Kochs on speed dial. Heck, you ladies might be lucky to keep your voting rights.

Republicans flip four of the 23 seats we’ve got up, and here come the trucks.

It’s our choice: We can let the Republicans move in – and there goes the neighborhood. Or we can re-elect President Obama, keep our Democratic Senate, and kick this Republican war on women to the curb. But we need to act NOW.

Doug the link was great but your continued reference to you and Michelle’s past romantic relationship is getting to be rude. Does this mean after the divorce is final you will be introducing yourself as Doug the guy who used to be married to Michelle?

Did this comment not mean anything to you?
    ————————————–
Yeah tacky dude, I don’t see you making a reference to your past relationship with Michelle on your blog or Facebook.

But you come to her arena and make it known to any who come to it your past relationship with her. Why don’t you use some if that sensitivity you pretend to have when you are facebooking to get the picture that what you are doing is embarrassing to Michelle.

You think she or her friends don’t know that you are totally removed from her in your areas of contact with others while attempting to avail yourself of any benefits you had when romantically connected with her in her arena of influence.

I refrained from mentioning this earlier, but your refusal to see the situation of referring to Michelle as someone you use to fuck is reaching a boiling point with us and I am not to shy to speak up for Michelle’s true friends.

GET ANOTHER FUCKING TITLE. One that has no reference to your past romantic relationship with Michelle.

  43. Dwight Says:

I watched the link that Doug posted. It was moving to those of us who have hearts. But for the racists it means nothing.

Would this speech given by a Jewish mother asking for mercy from the german people during hitler’s time mean anything to them?

You have your answer as to the effect it will have on that one third of whites that are rabid racists dogs. It may have some effect upon that second one third that condones the actions of the first third.

But would rather take comfort in the words of the founder of the Black Panthers, Stokely Carmichael. He said “we were never fighting for the right to integrate, we were fighting against white supremacy.”

That is the state of things today. That two thirds of whites are fighting to maintain white supremacy. As for the third that continues to use violence to attain it, Stokely had an answer “if a white man puts his hand on me I’m going to kill him before God gets the news.”

In California when carrying guns openly was the law, when the Black Panthers began to avail themselves of that law, it was quickly changed to deny all Californians of that right.

I wonder if blacks in Florida began to arm themselves and start killing any white that insults them and claiming self defense how long it will take those whites to change the law.

    Just an Idea.

In 2005, two parking lot security guards, one the son of a Sanford police department veteran and the other a volunteer for the department, shot a black teen, Travares McGill, in the back, killing him. They claimed self-defense, and the case was dismissed in court.

  45. Social Butterfly Says:

I saw this online today and it bears repeating. Wake up you Republican Women (honestly, I can’t believe you haven’t gone the way of the dinosaur yet)

Turns Out Being Born a Woman Is a Major Financial Mistake

As if being a woman wasn’t difficult enough—what with all the not having control over important decisions about our own bodies, making less money than our male colleagues, and, yes, let’s play the childbirth card—we are also routinely hit with financial penalties just for having the balls to be born with a vagina. That’s right, women pay more for everything from razors to houses to health care for no reason other than that we are women. It’s like our own personal vagina tax, and it sucks.
In fact, it’s enraging. You might think such gendered pricing practices would be illegal and we wouldn’t even have to worry about them, but alas they are not. Of course, there are federal civil rights laws which project against discrimination in employment and housing on the basis of race, gender, or sexual orientation, but the same cannot be said for the sales of goods and services. Some states and cities have their own statutes, but they often don’t make much of a dent in these kinds of widespread problems.

In fact, this problem is so pervasive that often we don’t even notice it’s happening—we just accept the cost of items as a given, sort of like the air around us. But there are lots of little ways we’re charged more than men. Marie Claire has a detailed run-down of how this plays out, and they point specifically to dry cleaners, who often charge women three times as much to clean shirts which are virtually identical to mens’ dress shirts. They justify this by saying that these “blouses” require extra labor to press. Hmm, seeing as I wear a larger shirt size than some of my male friends, yet their shirts fit on the pressing machine, this hardly seems possible.

Then there are things like haircuts and women’s toiletries, which are typically priced higher than their men’s counterparts, despite the fact that, even though they are all wrapped up in them purty pale pink packages, they are virtually the same products. (Maybe pink ink is just astronomically expensive?) Obviously retailers don’t like to admit to it, since if they did, we’d come running at them, nails filed to a point and extra-gentle razors in hand, demanding a refund, but it is happening.

A study done at the University of Central Florida found that on average, women’s deodorant costs 30 cents more per ounce than men’s, even when the only difference between the products was the smell. The study’s coauthor, Megan Duesterhaus said, “These companies have us convinced that men and women are so biologically different that we need completely different products, as though we are a different species.” Well, they are from Mars, and we’re from Venus, which probably has an atmosphere that affects our sweat differently and necessitates special deodorant technology to neutralize our female brand of stank.

We could consider ourselves “lucky” if these price gaps stopped at relatively trivial expenditures like dry cleaning and hair products, but unfortunately they extend into far more substantial purchases like cars, homes, and even health insurance. Blergh. In the case of buying cars, it’s long been known that women often get the shaft, and it doesn’t seem to have improved one bit. On average, women now pay $200 more for a car than a white man would, and black women pay a whopping $400 more.

When it comes to home loans, the Consumer Federation of America found in 2006 that women were 32 perecnt more likely to end up with high-interest subprime loans, even if when they had better credit ratings than the men. This may not be a case of discrimination, but rather the result of the way women tend to shop for things. Economists theorize that we rely on word-of-mouth rather than just taking the lowest rate from whomever is offering it. We aren’t as likely to negotiate either, which puts us at a disadvantage when buying cars, homes, or other big items like appliances. As Yale Law School professor Ian Ayres explains, “The idea of just giving a discount to those who ask for one puts women at a strong disadvantage since they are less inclined to ask.” (Here is some help for this very problem, should you need it.)

Perhaps the most disturbing part of this whole situation is that women pay so much more in health care premiums because of a practice called gender rating—basically charging more because they can claim that a person’s gender affects how much it will cost to cover them. The National Women’s Law Center has just issued a new report that found more than 90 percent of the best-selling health plans charge women more than they do men. This practice has already been made illegal in 14 states, but the rest the country is still shit out of luck.

Just how bad is the gap? Pretty bad. According to eHealthInsurance.com, in Chicago a 30-year-old woman pays 31 percent more than a man of her same age pays. In Louisville, Kentucky, a 40-year-old nonsmoking woman pays 53 percent more than a nonsmoking man of the same age. The nonsmoking woman even pays 14 percent more than the premium a male smoker pays.

Why, pray tell, would insurers charge women so much more than men? It’s mostly because, “[Women] are more likely to visit doctors, to get regular checkups, to take prescription drugs and to have certain chronic illnesses.” Oh good, because it totally makes sense to charge people more for keeping themselves healthy, thereby saving you money in the long run. Also, the fact that the gender gaps vary so widely between insurers indicates there is no “fixed cost” associated with covering the fairer sex, so their whole premise is pretty much bullshit. But to be fair, we are awfully needy in the drugs department. After all, we keep demanding those pricey whore pills, month after month.

The gender gap mainly applies to people purchasing insurance individually, because civil rights law prohibits employers from charging higher premiums for the same benefits to female employees. Though for group plans, if they have more women than men, an employer can choose to raise everyone’s premiums to cover the higher cost of women’s premiums. (That must really make our male colleagues love us.) But, wait, there’s more where that came from: The premium gap isn’t the only penalty against women who are buying their own insurance—they often also have to pay for maternity coverage separately, which can add to their costs significantly. For instance, in Springfield, Illinois, a 30-year-old woman must pay $278 for her monthly plan, plus $270 a month for maternity coverage. It sure is nice that having a baby isn’t considered a normal part of human bodily function.

Fortunately, the evil socialist plot known as Obama’s health care reform law addresses this and will eliminate gender rating in 2014. It will also require insurance plans to cover maternity care as one of the “essential health benefits.” That is, if the whole thing doesn’t get struck down by the Supreme Court… Fingers crossed!

So, when all is said and done and you add this all up, what exactly is the penalty we pay for being card-carrying vagina owners? Well, Marie Claire reports that California (where gender pricing has been banned since 1996) found that ladies paid about $1,351 a year in extra costs and fees. If you take that figure and run it across the entire country, it results in a total burden on women of about 151 billion dollars. That, in case you’re one of them there ladies that isn’t so good with numbers, is a lot of money. As it happens, it’s more than what the federal government spent on education in 2011. Gee, it sure would be nice to have some of that back in our bank account, but hahaha. Yeah, right.

Sadly, given that this is such a far-reaching problem, and there’s no one organization causing it, fighting this kind of gendered pricing is insanely difficult. But there are some ways we can fight for the right to pay what guys pay. (God, it’s so crazy that that sentence even needs to be typed.) First of all, start paying attention to where gender pricing is happening and try to avoid it. Second, it is certainly in our interest to continue supporting Obama’s health care bill, however imperfect it might be, against the constant onslaught of Republican attacks, and to that end you might want to write to your state and local representatives about all of these issues. Other than that, your only other option is to simply complain on a company-by-company basis and stop buying things from places that insist on overcharging you. It’s the power of the purse, people—the beautifully crafted, high fashion purse you’ll finally be able to afford when you no longer have to pay the Vagina Tax.

    /SB

  46. Ceci Says:

Dwight, violence will solve nothing. My brother is a member of a aryan race cliche. They pray for a “race war” every day. They believe that have the numbers and it will be like in Germany. I keep telling him that blacks will not just accept what they plan to do to them.

He says while waving his big automatic “bring it on.” It scares me that men are so quick to pick up guns. Why not follow the lead of saner minds? You talk about Storkely Carmichael, but I bet he was a leader not a person so foolish as to start something he could not finish.

If one innocent person dies as a result of your idea, what matters whether that person is black or white. What matters is that person was innocent. If you must target someone, make it the offender.

If you must kill each other do it in a place that does not affect the lives of others. I know what my brother does is horrible, but I am not a part of it. I don’t know what third of the white race that places me in. All I know is that I am powerless to stop him or you.

He won’t listen. If you don’t, then what?

  47. Social Butterfly Says:

Maybe ya’all should lighten up a bit on Doug. If Michelle doesn’t have a problem with whatever he wants to call himself, why do you all feel the need to get involved? Just saying….

  48. Zen Lill Says:

Mischa, you are seriously hilarious in your commentary and I just mean that you can turn a phrase, my friend, that I threw in for those of you who would accuse me of finding an unfunny situation funny. This contraception/abortion issue is getting more and more ludicrous and beyond ‘controlling’ – it seems like there’s something larger at play here and I am busily trying to get to exactly what.

I do love your idea of watching a man moves before ‘buying the bull’ bc they can whine all they want about push-up bras and padded asses, etc…but you cannot judge a man’s size by anything but hands/feet/adam’s apples – all of which can give a faulty reading according to my sources : ) How about a half cup of popcorn for the men who go in for vasectomies bc it takes about 10 minutes to have it done, include the movie and the signing of the permission slip by the wife and you’ll be home resting in 20 minutes total, no hormonal side effects either unlike the disturbances tubal ligations can cause.

/SB, nice post about vagina tax and I agree with #47 as well, clearly Mischa can handle herself, if she feels the need for Doug to do anything about his name, then it’s her place to handle that as well, that falls under the ‘personal biz’ heading and that’s said with no offense to any friend of M’s, I’m sure you mean well. Just sayin’

Ruth, very good point about mid-life (or anytime) married male cheaters vs female cheaters, one just expects to be forgiven which is why they’re such shitty liars, the other runs the risk of not only not being forgiven but nasty discussion behind her back and probably from some of the man’s female sympathizers, which is why women will often be very good at lying, there’s a lot at stake.

Hmm, all of that screams of my suggestion to just have the marital or committed relationship discussion, if you must/want to step out, either/both parties be discreet about it, and protect the sexual health of everyone involved, I hate the word ‘cheat’ it’s ridiculous, just be straight with the person you claim to love if you want a little strange every now and again, sheesh…people put so much weight on fidelity as if it is the only measure of a relationship.

Men are less inclined to trust this ‘talk’ idea bc they want to believe (and it makes them nervous) that women are more likely to have an emotional/sexual affair vs their ‘it’s only body parts’ type of affair, I think this is utter nonsense, if a man is hanging out with ‘body parts’ then they are attached to a woman (yep, they are) then she will be having an emotional affair with you just like your wife would be with be with someone else then, no? See what I mean, faulty premise all the way around. Who do men think they are having these affairs with?? They do sell plastic va-J-J’s and other ‘body parts’ at any good sex store, try that : )
