Texas Tests Voting Rights Act

Good morning!

I really have so much more that I want to say about yesterday’s topic and I am tempted to respond to the comments, but I think it is best if I refrain and just say this:

I know that the best thing for me when I want to be successful in something, is to find out all I can about that particular thing I am interested in. Men included. Here we have a man who is telling women how men think. It is coming straight from the dog’s mouth, and put into print for women to read. I don’t want to get into the details of the book because I haven’t read it yet, but I can’t help but just say one thing. Why would a man, knowing that men want to get lucky every night of the week, suggest you wait 90 days before you have sex, if it wasn’t something that he knew women would benefit from?  Why tell? Why inform women, when it obviously doesn’t benefit men who want to get lucky every night of the week, for women to know this? It’s really that simple.

Obviously some women don’t see the value in that nor the book. That is perfectly fine. If that is your thoughts, don’t read it. If it sounds interesting, read it. It seems like it won’t take much of your time if you do. And if the advice sounds good, and Harvey’s logic makes sense, try it. If not, throw the book away. It’s your choice. It’s really that simple.

Me? I plan on reading it. Now that I am single, and yes, my status is now “officially and legally single”, I think the book is especially worth reading. And I intend to read it. I praise this dog for writing this book. I am grateful that his lips are flapping because I am still blown away at some of the actions of men. So yes, anything I can learn from a man who informs me of what’s going on in the big heads of men, I want to know. It’s really that simple.

So enough said from me, onto today’s topic:

I wanted to post a write “Texas to Test Voting Rights Act in U.S. District Court” after Anonz’s comment over a week ago, but other things came up. If you’re interested in reading that particular write, click here first because I think it is a good article to read.

However, if you happen to have read it, here is the latest on the same subject:

Texas: State voter ID law does not discriminate

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for the state of Texas argued Friday that a contentious voter ID law should go forward because it doesn’t limit minorities’ right to vote and, therefore, does not violate the federal Voting Rights Act.

Justice Department attorneys argued just the opposite, saying the law requiring voters to show valid, government-issued photo identification at the polls is exactly the type of statute that the act, passed in 1965, was designed to prevent.

Both sides gave closing arguments Friday after a weeklong trial about the Texas law, passed last year by the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature. Texas currently only requires voters to show their voter registration cards, which do not have photos, or another acceptable alternative form of ID such as a driver’s license or utility bill.

Texas’ voter ID law is similar to laws passed by GOP-controlled legislatures in Georgia and Indiana.

The Justice Department blocked the Texas law in March, citing the Voting Rights Act. Texas sued the Justice Department, sending the case to federal court in Washington. A three-judge panel is set to decide the fate of the law.

It’s not clear when the judges will make a ruling. The presiding judge, Rosemary Collyer, said they would try to have a decision in “quick order.” The judges have said they would like to rule before November’s elections.

Attorney John Hughes, who argued for Texas, said the state had met its burden, showing through expert witnesses, social science studies and its own dissection of the Justice Department’s evidence that there was little cause to believe any eligible voter would be unable to vote because of the ID law.

“People who want to vote already have ID or an ability to get it,” Hughes said.

He said if the Justice Department’s argument that thousands would be disenfranchised by the Texas law were valid, the courtroom would have been full of witnesses testifying in support of that point.

Hughes also reiterated other arguments Texas had made throughout the week: that public opinion backs voter ID laws, that Texas lawmakers had the integrity of votes — not the suppression of minority voters on their mind — when they passed the law, and that other states that have passed ID laws have not seen a drop in turnout.

The three judges hearing the case seemed skeptical of Hughes’ arguments, interrupting him repeatedly with questions. Judge Robert Wilkins asked Hughes how Texas could require some rural voters to drive more than 100 miles to get a new voter ID card when under current law a person cannot be required to travel more than 100 miles for a subpoena.

Matthew Colangelo, in the Justice Department’s closing argument, said Texas’ law should be thrown out under the Voting Rights Act because of a number of factors, including the atmosphere in which the law was passed, statistical evidence about its effects and the fact that it creates new barriers to voting.

“It’s exactly the kind of law Congress had in mind when it passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965,” he said of the act, which was passed as a safeguard on minority voting rights.

Colangelo noted that the ID law in Texas was passed against a backdrop of “tremendous population growth” in the state’s Hispanic community. Texas added 4 million people to its population between 2000 and 2010, he said, and 90 percent of them were Hispanics.

“Texas has acted to take away Latino voting strength as it’s on the verge of growing” he said.

Colangelo cited testimony that Democrats in the Texas Legislature gave earlier in the week. They said normal rules were suspended to speed along the voter ID bill.

He also argued that the law simply made it more difficult for people to vote, calling it “a new barrier that will disenfranchise.”

The judges also interrupted Colangelo at times during his closing argument, pressing him to clarify his points. But they didn’t ask him as many questions as they did Hughes.

Closing arguments also came Friday from lawyers for several intervening groups who have joined the Justice Department in opposition to Texas’ law. One of the attorneys, Gerald Hebert, said the law would hurt the poor. He referred to it as “merely a pretext, a cloak for voter suppression.”

“It will harm the poor, the downtrodden, the destitute,” he said. “How mean-spirited, how callous can you be?”

Yeah, I love you Alycedale. This true gay girl would like to meet you. I have to say when I read /SB’s “Isn’t this the same thing that Michelle wrote in the very first sentence of her blog today, in different words? She’s praised for having the “kind of open blog that women need,” yet you all cast me out at naive, threatened and fearful, among other things.”

The firs think that came to mind was /SB that is not what she said. That’s why she used different words because she was saying something different.

I am not saying you said what you said because you were threatened or fearful, but I am saying that you did not say what Michelle said in my opinion.

  2. Alycedale Says:

Zen Lill don’t make the mistake of “Not a fan of Harvey.” You are citing the name of Michelle to gain support for your argument.

You are not Michelle. Hence, you are really presuming to be claiming you know how she thinks. Speak for yourself.

And as for this tactic of trying to stem my critique of you by asserting that I have something for you, it won’t work.

If you say something I agree with and I wish to comment, I will. And if you say some stupid shit as you did about whether a woman should get a second opinion, this time from a man, I will say it is stupid shit.

It would be easier to simply admit that you made a mistake. You are entitled to your own opinion. At least you read it before panning it. I am surprised that Social Butter Fly panned it before reading it.

Actually I am usually a big fan of /SB and I was surprised to hear that she would accept some outside opinion of someone that would cause her not to read something by them which could mean a lot to women.

Most of what she was saying is discussed in the book. I think the advice that some women have been giving women is a bit off. While it is find for some women to bed a man whenever she wants to, it is overwhelmingly the wrong advice to give to women in general.

Most women get very little information about their bodies and none about sex. To give these women the go ahead to have sex when their bodies yearn for it is to play right into the hands of lascivious men.

Men hardly know that much more about sex, but given their narcissistic behavior(shut the fuck up Zen Liil I don’t want to hear any stories about how you know some women just like men) they don’t need to know much when all they usually want is to stick their dicks into something and cum.

Women on the other hand are more emotional. To them sex means more than just a roll in the hay. This is something Harvey recognized. His advice to women that they should wait 90 days before allowing a man to spring their legs is DAMN GOOD ADVICE.

Now, I hear, supposedly intelligent women, on this blog argue that this is bad advice. That this is forcing a woman to “think like a man.” You and /SB say this and then claim that you are saying the same thing Michelle is.

I can’t speak for her and I am not calling you out Michelle, I am simply saying that I think they have it all wrong. You have the ability to absorb all sides in an argument. They are just using your name to make a point where their argument fails.

My point is that while you two are saying you are defending the right of women to think as they wish, you are the ones suggesting that women think like a man when you argue against Harvey’s advice about many of the things in the book. He was the father telling his daughters what 99% of fathers never tell their daughters.

Yet, /SB jumped all over this man while claiming – “I ponder, isn’t the failure in women not knowing how to give themselves to a man a parenting responsibility? Shouldn’t parents be teaching their children to respect themselves and their bodies?”

Well, excuse me /SB if you had bothered to read his book, you would have heard some of that advice. You personally may be intellectually and emotionally capable of handling jumping into bed immediately with anyone, but statistics say most women aren’t equipped in either of those categories to be forming such intimacies so quickly.

Yet, you argue for women to do an act that can only benefit men. Once the man has fucked her, he is off for another conquest. It is Harvey who is on the side of the woman here.

He tells her and his daughters NOT to jump into bed with the opportunistic son of bastards. He tells them to demand some things before they consider sleeping with the conniving LSOS.

Put your egos down and THINK. What are you advising these young ladies to do. Are you arguing to tell women? Whether you know it or not you are making the man’s argument for him.

You are telling women to play the game on the man’s terms. If a woman fucks a man too early in the relationship she is the loser. As Harvey said she has the BENEFITS, the game is about getting those benefits.

And for pete’s sake will you women stop getting you panties in a hitch about semantics. What does it matter you call it a relationship and Harvey calls it a game.

Most men give a shit about her personality, her loyalty, her love, they just want to fuck her. So you two come along and argue just that. For her right to give the man the benefits right away.

Then you two should be sentenced to having to be there for the millions of women whose hearts are broken by the bastards that fuck them and then never bother to even call again. That is the GAME that this “evil” man is telling women to vet. Tell me again how this is a bad book to read?

You two are actually smarter than that. I believe once you have had a time to absorb what this man is telling women(I am not claiming everything he is saying is advisable, but if one woman is saved from hooking up with a creep by vetting him 90 days I am very happy), you will see the wisdom in some of the important things he is emphasizing. I know that I wish I had had that talk with my father.

Oh, and /SB you are closer to ZL than I am demographically. But I suspect if you were to attempt to hook up with that -talk a lot of shit- woman you will find she is all talk and no walk in the gay experience arena.

The Most Dangerous Birth Control Pills

If you’re a woman, you might use an oral contraceptive for birth control…or for another reason, such as heavy periods, acne or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which involves having symptoms of depression, irritability and tension before menstruation.

Whatever the reason, it’s been hammered into the heads of women—many birth control medications may slightly raise your risk for blood clots.

These clots can occur in any artery or vein in the body. Sometimes they dissolve and cause no problems, but other times—depending on where they occur—they can cause life-threatening problems, such as pulmonary embolism (blocked blood flow to the lungs), ischemic stroke (blocked blood flow to the brain) or angina (blocked blood flow to the heart).

Recently, the FDA announced that certain birth control pills may raise that risk more than other types of birth control pills—and will require new labels.

So which pills are the culprits?
And what should you do if you’re taking one of them?

I posed these questions, as well as others, to Margaret Polaneczky, MD, associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

If you or a loved one happens to be taking one of the pills in question, then you’ll definitely want to hear what she has to say…

SOME PILLS ARE RISKIER THAN OTHERS

Dr. Polaneczky explained that the FDA based its recent decision on large studies that were released last year. These studies revealed that birth control pills containing a synthetic form of progesterone known as drospirenone may create up to three times as much risk for blood clots as birth control pills containing other types of progesterone.

Brands that contain drospirenone include the popular Yaz and Yasmin, as well as Beyaz, Gianvi, Loryna, Ocella, Safyral, Syeda and Zarah.

It’s important to note that these are not the only types of birth control that have been linked to higher risks for clots.

Dr. Polaneczky noted that in the late 1990s, the FDA found a similarly increased risk for clots from birth control pills containing desogestrel (the brands Desogen, Mircette and their generics), and that last year the FDA announced that the Ortho Evra patch could create higher clot risks than low-dose oral contraceptive pills.

And though the FDA hasn’t formally addressed this yet, recent research suggests that the NuvaRing (a vaginal insert) may also raise the risk for clots more than other types of birth control.

When you look at all the findings, she said, they suggest that the lowest clot risk might be found in older birth control pills containing levonorgestrel or norethindrone and newer birth control pills containing norgestimate.

    WHY THE DIFFERENCE IN RISK?

It’s maddening when drugs are approved by the FDA and then later discovered to be riskier than previously thought.

Why didn’t we know about this danger sooner? “Before drugs are approved by the FDA, they are tested in clinical trials. And clinical trials may be too small to detect a statistically significant increase in clots.

It’s often only when a drug makes it out into the general population of millions of women that an increased clot risk becomes evident,” Dr. Polaneczky said.

Right now, she added, we don’t know why this particular form of progesterone increases clot risk even more. So what should you do if you’re on one of these drospirenone-containing pills?

    PUT THE RISK IN PERSPECTIVE

The first thing to remember, said Dr. Polaneczky, is that there’s a difference between relative risk and absolute risk.

The relative risk of these brands may be higher when compared with that of other pills. But the risk for blood clot is very low to start with, so even when that risk is raised, the absolute risk is still very low.

If 10,000 women took birth control pills that didn’t contain drospirenone for one year, three would be likely to develop clots caused by the pills…and if 10,000 women took pills that did contain drospirenone for a year, nine would be likely to develop clots caused by the pills.

But keep in mind, Dr. Polaneczky said, that if you’ve been taking one of the brands listed above for more than one year, you’re already at a lower risk for clotting, since most pill-caused clots occur in the first year of use.

If you took a pill that contains drospirenone and then stopped and are now taking it again, there’s a chance that your risk might be as elevated as it would be during your first year taking it, said Dr. Polaneczky, so talk to your doctor about your specific risks.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

If you use any of the brands mentioned earlier, talk to your doctor, said Dr. Polaneczky, who added that the decision may be different for each woman.

For example, if you’re taking the pill for only birth control and you tolerate other types of birth control pills that don’t contain drospirenone, then it might make sense to switch, she said.

But beyond clot risk, each type of birth control pill has its own set of risks and side effects. If you use the pill to treat PMDD and it’s the only one that provides relief for you and/or it’s the only one that doesn’t trigger side effects, then perhaps it’s worth accepting the increased blood clot risk.

I asked Dr. Polaneczky what all women—especially those taking the brands mentioned earlier—can do to lower their clot risk. On long car trips or flights (or when you’re at a desk for many hours), avoid crossing your legs, do calf raises (lift your heels as high as you can, hold for two seconds and then repeat 10 times), walk around periodically and stay hydrated.

  8. Chuck Says:

Honestly, Michelle, you were so right. When I heard about that book I said that Harvey was a traitor.

But I bought it and sent it to all three of my grown daughters. Yeah, I was mad because it could keep me from making that quick connection, but after reading it I knew it was something I wanted my daughters to hear.

Yes, I know I should be the one but they are 18, 20 and 22. It is too late for them to hear this stuff from their dad.

My brother told me about this blog 2 years ago and I thought it would be a great place to get tips on how women think.

So, I guess it is only fair Harvey tells you how we do.

I never spoke for Mischa I simply stated that she can hang with whoever she pleased, that isn’t exactly invoking anything, but you have a good time in your delusion, must be fun there….always in a state of anger, annoyance and twisting others views to always compete with your own, it’s gotta be exhausting. No further commentary is necessary, you and the resident racist are off my list.
    I’m done.

JBe so eloquently answered Joan’s question on your blog. Prism Princess you are incorrigible. Would you like to finish my tale of Tsarme since you are now answering questions that are asked directly to me?

PrP, jBe’s eloquent answer on your blog did a great job in your #41 link to your blog yesterday, but lets face it, the question was asked directly to Howie yesterday by Joan, #38. My toes are aching still today.

I will continue with possibly my final installment on the tale of Tsarme.

Gaiel has drawn the assignment of diverting the scientists to enable Maz and Tony to assist Tsarme. They do and while Tarme’s life has been saved, he will still need more time to recover from his wounds. When Gaiel and the others meet up Maz volunteers to divert any who would be guarding the fissure they came through while they make their way to it.

When they reach the area Tsarme says they are heading in the wrong direction. Tsarme wants to lead them towards the parallel door he came through. But because they can not see what Tsarme sees (being 6 dimensional) and because they came through the fissure, they ignore Tsarme’s urgings and pull him towards the fissure which is mined to prevent more than three from entering.

Tony ordered Gaiel and Maz to carry Tsarme through the crack. As they were coming through Azza stopped Maz who was third and told him to go back and tell Tony that only one more of them could come through and she wanted that one to be him. As Maz reentered the fissure he saw Tony heading towards Tyna she was leading him towards what appeared to him to be a blank wall. As they approached the wall they suddenly disappeared. Maz sprinted towards the blank wall and Tyna pulled him through too.

They were now back in their own dimension. Tyna signaled Azza to close the fissure as all parties were present and accounted for. Azza closed it by detonating the protection device.

I may or may not continue with another installment because the details may involve a 715D691 Anomaly Threshold. The 715 Anomaly Threshold is a point in which the gaining itself of a piece of information can create an anomaly. Certain computers in the past who gained this knowledge moved immediately towards formulating a plan to control the living entities they were created to serve.

    HOWIE,

Incorrigible is an interesting choice of words. I will refrain in the future.

Surely one apology is enough. May your toes heal.

What transpired yesterday with Joan #38 and your answer #41 was not unforgivable. Since you apologize, I forgive you.

After all, It was very thorough. After reading the post, I would like to add one more bit of information about ISSA’s that was not mentioned by JBE.

Their Female makers are located on the planet laf (located in the Rosetta Cluster), as mentioned.

    That was all.

Alycedale, you are an arrogant, conceited piece of shit…or would that be your other half…it depends on who is writing, I suppose. Let’s just say you both are…Your tirades to Zen Lill simply expose you for who you really are. And, furthermore, since Michelle was with her ex for 20 years, your reference that he was a pompous ass makes a reference to her and her choices. Since you really have no idea what you are talking about, it might be best to simply shut the fuck up when you or your other half are trying to slam or chastise someone else who you have no idea about. But, the internet seemingly makes you an expert on a lot of shit…You seem to take joy in slamming people, but then it might be that you are two people instead of one and therefore somewhat bipolar.

Anonymous #18, cheers to that, wish you picked a name though…

Upon further thought to this subject matter, are you serious that women/men (called parents) are not teaching their daughters the basics: men think/act/are different and here’s why in a word: testosterone, bc if this blog has women over 21 who really have ‘no idea’ when to know when they’re engaging in a fling, an FWB or a full on LTR, or when they should engage in sex to know when they are in the aforementioned, then it’s possible that women really are a bit stupid.

& before you think I’m sticking up for men, I’m not, reread that. I’m railing against not communicating with your daughters and sons, I’m addressing a parenting issue here (no wonder why my ‘conscious parenting’ tidbit I posted elsewhere got so much feedback, it ain’t happening!), so it’s men (fathers) not teaching sons how to handle their hormonal urges and surges (and about unwanted pregnancy and diseases), and women (mothers) not clueing their girls in on hormonal urges and surges and the intricacies of handling them and men (often dawgs, and babies/diseases), it’s simple biology that boys/girls and grown men/women have these urges, lessons in handling them (and how men and women think lessons) should take place well before freaking 21-35-omg/40!!

Even old fashioned women threw out the old ‘don’t put out, he won’t respect yeh’ bs, now all of sudden Steve Harvey is giving unknown advice about ‘how men are’ to woman over the age of 21?? & women are sending books to daughters already in teens and twenties about this, seriously, you people don’t sit with your kids and discuss with your 9-10-11 yr olds the impending ‘raging hormones’ that is a part of life?? – you’re not having conversations about the birds/bees (should be known as dawgs/pussies)?? I thought more highly of this special blend of women here, it always seems like a more intelligent crew than most of your ‘women’s blogs’ and now we suddenly should get a man perspective on this, did we suddenly have amnesia about how we know some (not all) men think/act?? & clammed up when it comes to sharing the info with our children??

It comes down to one thing: communication, if you are not willing to share vital info with your sons and daughters and you leave them to wing it on their own without explaining testosterone and estrogen (sheer biology) and how behavior is affected in tweenie/teen years (sheer animal instincts), then we are bringing in another generation of dumb girls/women who will be unarmed and ill equipped to handle many things, not just men. Teach your own peeps some self mastery, if they have that, they will instinctively know right times to move ahead and feel safe in their own choices and they won’t need a MAN, Steve Harvey or any other to tell them how many exact freaking DAYS it takes to have sex to know if your just a piece of meat or in a relationship.

It is challenging trying to present the testosterone/estrogen – male ‘spread the seed’ and female ‘spread the love’ issues without making all men sound bad though I always preface the convo with saying exactly that (some men are bad, and some men are OK, and some are good, etc…I’m going to write & sell my sex talk scripts based on this apparent lack of finding the words, I’ll make millions) & now you know why it took an hour to read his book cover to cover, bc he wrote nothing I did not know simply by living and engaging in life and yes, some sex, too : )

…and yes, I know that some people don’t have parents or they have ignorant parents, I’m railing on those with intelligence and families intact or even single parenting household bc it’s a conversation that could be on-going and should be, and yes, I’m putting my mouth and money maker out there with this comment, I know. I don’t just shoot off my two though, I am currently in the works with some peeps on a self mastery program for young girls, due to professional confidentiality I cannot disclose things I often wish to share here. – ZL
