The Democratic Convention: Thoughts Of Day Three

Good morning!

Last night I watched our president give his speech. I am usually moved and inspired by what he says because I truly believe in the president…that he is a fair minded supporter of all the American people, wanting what is best for all. But last night I had a different feeling, and it was very different than in 2008. It had nothing to do with my belief and trust in the president – It wasn’t one without HOPE, but certainly desperation showed its face. It wasn’t that I was feeling a desperateness come from him – I wasn’t – no he was as usual, his cool self.

It was me that was feeling desperate. I realize I am contradicting myself – How can one have HOPE and yet still feel desperate? I have so much HOPE and faith in what our president can do, if he gets the opportunity. I feel like the life of our country is in his hands. And yet, it is really in ours and that is where I become desperate.

I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day who is not racist, but clearly is voting for Romney. No matter what I say about Obama’s support of women and Romney’s lack of, the many lives that the Affordable Care Act will save, and Romney’s goal to repeal it, etc., …she is still voting repub.

How many other women are like my girlfriend? I kept thinking of what America and this world would be like if he wasn’t our president…what it would be like if he didn’t have the opportunity for four more years. I felt sick to my stomach.

My desperation comes when I think of how the women in this country can make the difference between winning and losing. And it isn’t just winning or losing the presidency. It is so much more. It is winning/keeping or losing our rights. It is winning/keeping or losing our lives, etc. In my opinion, there is no choice between the two presidential candidates…and what I mean by that is that there is only one choice.  Why it is so difficult for some women to see, is what brings out the desperateness in me. Obama can only be great for this country if we vote for him. Our fate is in our own hands.

And that is pretty much what I got from Obama’s speech last night:

“When all is said and done, when you pick up that ballot to vote, you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation. Over the next few years, big decisions will be made in Washington, on jobs, the economy; taxes and deficits; energy, education; war and peace, decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and our children’s lives for decades to come. And on every issue, the choice you face won’t be just between two candidates or two parties. It will be a choice between two different paths for America.”

He couldn’t have made it more clear. We all know that the country is in a much better place than it was 4 years ago. We all know the wonderful things that Obama has accomplished thus far, and we all know what he is capable of should he get 4 more years with coattails.

What we don’t know is how bad off the country will be if Romney is president. And that is what scares me. I am HOPEing that I am not alone. I am HOPEing that all of you are scared too…scared so much that you too will see that the fate of our country is in our hands…that there is only one choice.

As desperate as I am feeling this morning, I have HOPE that women…the American people will come together as citizens, come to their senses, and do what is best for all.

In the words of President Obama:

“We also believe in something called citizenship — a word at the very heart of our founding, at the very essence of our democracy; the idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another, and to future generations.

“We believe that when a CEO pays his autoworkers enough to buy the cars that they build, the whole company does better.

“We believe that when a family can no longer be tricked into signing a mortgage they can’t afford, that family is protected, but so is the value of other people’s homes, and so is the entire economy.

“We believe the little girl who’s offered an escape from poverty by a great teacher or a grant for college could become the next Steve Jobs, or the scientist who cures cancer, or the President of the United States, and it’s in our power to give her that chance.

“We know that churches and charities can often make more of a difference than a poverty program alone. We don’t want handouts for people who refuse to help themselves, and we certainly don’t want bailouts for banks that break the rules. We don’t think the government can solve all our problems. But we don’t think that the government is the source of all our problems, any more than are welfare recipients, or corporations, or unions, or immigrants, or gays, or any other group we’re told to blame for our troubles.

“Because America, we understand that this democracy is ours…. As citizens, we understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government.”

    Fighting for American Jobs

    Fighting for American Jobs

One year ago, President Barack Obama presented a clear plan to create jobs now and grow our economy. The American Jobs Act offered a clear path forward to help small businesses succeed and hire, provide tax relief for our workers, rebuild America, provide aid to those who lost their jobs through no fault of their own, and put our police officers, firefighters, teachers and veterans to work. Under pressure from Democrats, Republicans have passed a few pieces of this key legislation.

However, they continue to block the most critical provisions, including new tax cuts for small businesses and jumpstarting critical infrastructure projects.

Instead of standing in the way of job creation and economic growth, House Republicans must join with President Obama and Democrats to reduce the unemployment rate and restore American job security.

Congresswoman Pelosi honors the patriotism, courage, and service of all of our men and women in uniform. This week, the Obama Administration announced new measures for veterans, service members and their families.

Meeting the Needs of our Veterans
In every generation, America sends our sons and daughters to distant shores to fight on behalf of our freedom, our values, and our safety and security.

We owe our deepest debt of gratitude to those who give their lives for our country; and we must do everything in our power to care for those who return safely home.

Last week, the Obama Administration announced new measures to expand suicide prevention efforts and enhance mental health and substance abuse services for veterans, service members, and their families.

This announcement builds upon efforts by the Administration and Democrats to care for and honor those who serve our great nation. More information about the new measures can be found online.

Recently, a constituent who had fallen behind on his home mortgage contacted my office seeking assistance in applying for a loan modification.

My office, in coordination with several community groups, was able to facilitate communications between the constituent and his lender.

Instead of foreclosing on the home, the lender was able to work with the constituent to come to terms that were agreeable to both parties.

After several months, the constituent was granted an affordable modification, allowing him to remain in his home. Please visit my website or contact my office at (415) 556-4862 if you are experiencing difficulty with a federal agency.

Imagine what would have happened if the president’[s Job Plan had been passed by the republicans?

If it had, then 2 million more jobs would be here now. but if that was the case then the republicans would be lost seeking the White House, so they set out to make sure the country got as few new jobs as possible.

  6. Hanna Says:

Wow! That Clinton says things the rest of the DNC is not.
    ———————–
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton highlighted a stunning fact during his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday: Democratic presidents have overseen the creation of nearly twice as many jobs as Republican presidents since 1961.

“What’s the job score? Republicans, 24 million; Democrats, 42 [million],” Clinton said to cheers and applause.

Bloomberg Government first reported these figures in May, after analyzing growth in private-sector jobs since 1961.

  7. Lance Says:

Even if any given president has nothing to do with job creation, even if it just plain luck that Dem Presidents create more jobs and have a better stock market performance, you would be a fool to vote for a R president. Maybe R president’s are unlucky. Either way, the only smart vote is for the lucky guys!

  8. Bertha Says:

Perhaps the most ‘stunning’ thing about this claim was that the press actually did what they’re supposed to do, find out the truth. I wish they would use this attitude more often, and expose the biggest lies, as well as report on something as important as a sitting member of the Senate going on record saying he’d make sure Obama was a one-term president. The American people want the truth!

  9. John Says:

Of course it’s true. It’s also true that every time a Republican gets in office, they increase spending at a faster rate than Democrats, especially military, they increase the size of government faster than Democrats, and they increase the size of the deficit more.

They aren’t too swift on foreign policy either, as it turns out. What are they good at? Tax cuts for the rich, of course…

  10. Garvey Says:

Why would people think that the figures weren’t true? I mean, just because Paul Ryan feels it’s okay to blatantly lie to America and we all heard that the RNC will not allow itself to be governed by fact checkers?

This election is too important to not be governed by fact checkers. Sorry, Romney/Ryan. I’d say, “You got some splainin’ to do”

  11. Mae Says:

Bill knows his politics. I remember when he ran and the anticipation of a know nothing going into the WH.

Except all the traders I knew at the Merc knew he would knock it out of the park and they got very, very rich. It really depends on the select few.

It seems to be the running theme if Dem’s win the congress goes GOP and vice versa. Where are we now? What is best for this country? How do we achieve that?

This is what is weighs heavy on my heart. Does it matter who wins? Don’t we really need to change Congress first to see real change for us? And finally how do we collectively do this?

  12. Ken Says:

I remember the night of President Clinton’s State of the Union Speech before his first budget was voted on in Congress.

In a rebuttal, GOP leader Newt Gingrich said that if the Clinton budget passed, we would see a depression that would make the one in the 1930s pale by comparison and unemployment lines as far as the eyes could see.

A few short weeks later, former VP Gore cast the tie-breaking vote passing that budget. What followed was eight years of uninterrupted growth and the creation of 23 million jobs. Even if it was all luck, as you say — and I do not believe for a moment that it was — would we not be better off with people who saw luck staring them in the face and worked with it rather than people who denied that it was there and tried to act to stop it in its tracks?

The problem for Republican presidents is that they cannot break away from the “trickle-down” economic theory, despite the fact that it has proven unsuccessful every time they have tried it.

Relying on that, they have not come up with a new idea, and that is why people are reluctant to trust them.

  13. Mildred Says:

Romney was not in business to create jobs, but to accumulate a bucket-o-money, some of it pretty unethically.

  14. Timothy Says:

Thanks guy and Gals for the comedy links. Those comedians are often more informative than our so called 4th Estate.

I learned how embarrassingly quick the criticism of this president began within days of him taking the oath of office. And I learned that from Jon Stewart

  15. Carrie Says:

Those links are a horrible indictment of the main scream media networks…of course, luckily, i had already known it to be true…stewart and colbert, are awesome and real when it comes to bringing out the satire behind political news…Bravo, gentlemen!

  16. Erica Says:

I am voting for Obama because he is the most human as opposed to Romney. We have to look around and see what is awaiting us when we cannot earn what we used to because we are sick, old or disabled.

Republicans have money but their old relatives still use medicare. How convenient and how duplicitous. Not everyone can be healthy and young all the time. Republicans say essentially that hey, you are what you worked for.

How can one live with themselves having all the luxuries they can have and not think about the rest of the country?!!! Awful people. Great article! Loooove you on “The King of Queens”.

  17. Fromm Says:

I haven’t figured out why the GOP calls Obama a socialist when Romney and the Mormon church practices a very well running form of Socialism. Why doesn’t someone point this out?

They pay 10% evenly on their tithing (taxes). That money is used to purchase and store a whole lot of food and resources in big warehouses for emergencies.

If you are in need, if your job is gone and you have nothing, you can go to the warehouse (if you are in good standing I think, but maybe even if you aren’t) you can get a cart and shop for free and pick up anything you need.

You are taken care of BECAUSE you have paid into the system fairly and evenly. It seems to work for them and they seem to be happy and cared for. Mormons are known for caring for their own the world over.

Now, if Romney is happy to be practicing this as his faith, why the disjoint belief for his politics? It’s no wonder the flip-flop. He is at his core in conflict with his faith which is a form of socialism where they care for everybody.

  18. Kelly Says:

    I like this one.

Those looking for a convention bump may find what they are looking for in the Gallup daily tracking poll, which produced good news on Friday for President Barack Obama.

Gallup’s last three nights of interviewing of adults, conducted Sept. 4 to 6, shows Obama with a 52 percent approval rating, the highest approval percentage reported for Obama on the Gallup tracking poll since May 2011, just after the killing of Osama bin Laden.

The latest results represent a seven percentage point increase in Obama’s approval rating, from 45 percent, from Gallup’s previous three-day sample, conducted Sept. 1 to 3. Each sample is based on interviews with roughly 1,500 adults and has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3 percent.

  20. Health Info Says:

The Sweet Snack That Does Wonders for Blood Pressure

As a health reporter, I get happy when a new study produces scientific evidence in support of advice that seems sensible but previously lacked proof.

And it’s particularly nice when that advice deals with something sweet and yummy. In this case, I’m talking about the idea that raisins can reduce blood pressure.

Why is this important? Blood pressure that is even slightly elevated—a condition called prehypertension—increases the risk for heart attack, stroke and kidney disease.

Prehypertension is defined as a systolic pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading, as measured in “millimeters of mercury” or mmHg) of 120 to 139…or a diastolic pressure (the bottom number) of 80 to 89.

For the new study, researchers randomly assigned 46 prehypertension patients, average age 61, to eat a snack three times a day for 12 weeks.

For one group, each snack consisted of a one-ounce package of raisins. The other group ate prepackaged processed commercial snack foods, such as crackers or cookies, that did not contain raisins, other fruit or vegetables.

The raisins and the other snacks each contained about 90 to 100 calories per serving. Participants’ blood pressure was measured at the start of the study and after four, eight and 12 weeks.

Results: Blood pressure did not change significantly among participants in the commercial snacks group.

In comparison, in the raisin group, systolic pressure decreased significantly, with reductions ranging from 5 mmHg to 7 mmHg—an amount that has cardiovascular benefits, clinical trial evidence suggests.

Raisin eaters’ diastolic pressure also dropped, though not as much.

    Explanation:
Raisins are high in potassium, a mineral that reduces blood pressure by promoting the proper balance of electrolytes and fluids in the body…helping offset the adverse effects of dietary sodium…and increasing the amount of sodium excreted via the urine.

Raisins also have antioxidants and other components that may make blood vessels less stiff.

    Best:
If your blood pressure is elevated—or if your blood pressure is fine and you want to keep it that way—consider forgoing processed snack foods in favor of a handful of natural raisins.

Not fond of raisins or crave more variety? Other potassium-rich snack options include bananas, cantaloupe, carrots, honeydew melon, papayas and yogurt.

Source: Harold Bays, MD, is medical director and president of the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center in Louisville, Kentucky, and principal investigator of a study on the effects of raisins on blood pressure, presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 61st Annual Scientific Session.

  21. Dave Says:

Obama gave a good, solid speech. As for Faux, regardless of what he said they would have a problem with it.

Doubtful they even heard the speech, they usually put on something else when it involves him. They’re more than likely just repeating what they’re told.

  22. Michael Says:

#1Don’t believe all pundits for they manipulate this election season. They has said this from day one. They have us going from right to left, left to right and inbetween. I can’t believe most of them for they are interested only in THEIR own spin.

#2Why would anyone, all women, vote for Mitt the draft dodger Romney.

#3 This household supports President Obama 100%!

  23. Gloria Says:

Ann Romney running for First Lady isn’t First Lady material. She won’t answer any questions if she supports women and their rights. A First Lady is supposed to have woman’s backs and she doesn’t. No one except the very rich can relate to her and her elevator.

We People still want to see their taxes.

  24. John Says:

Obama Sucks! Last time it was hope and change. FOR HIM and this time is follow the Path. lol Right out of the big house. YES The Free ride for them is over.

  25. Victoria Says:

“I’m no longer just a Candidate … I’m The President”

Now, THERE is at least One line that Romney will NEVER have to worry about Fumbling..: )

Obama 2012 … More Certain Every Time Romney Speaks

  26. anonymous Says:

John #24, why do you say Obama sucks? Back it with facts of why you say this. Remember, use facts. I am curious as to why you say that and where you come to this conclusion?
