Wonderful Women Of The World
Posted by Michelle Moquin on November 17th, 2012
Good morning!
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is the filmmaker of the 2012 Academy Award winning documentary: Saving Face, and my choice for today’s Wonderful Women Of The World.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an Emmy and Oscar award winning documentary filmmaker. She has worked in over ten countries to produce internationally acclaimed films including PAKISTAN’S TALIBAN GENERATION, which is the recipient of the Alfred I Dupont Award and the Association for International Broadcasting award. Her other films include AFGHANISTAN UNVEILED and a series of documentaries for Channel 4 for which she was awarded Broadcast Journalist of the Year by One World Media, UK. She is the first non-American to receive the Livingston Award for International Reporting and is a TED Senior fellow. Her 2012 film SAVING FACE won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. Sharmeen was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan and currently lives there with her husband and daughter.
Every year in Pakistan, many people – the majority of them women – are known to be victimized by brutal acid attacks, while numerous other cases go unreported. With little or no access to reconstructive surgery, survivors are physically and emotionally scarred. Many reported assailants, often a husband or someone else close to the victim, receive minimal if any punishment from the state.
Zakia is a 39-year old woman who had acid thrown on her by her husband after filing for divorce. She strives to find justice, alleviate pain and restore functioning and features to her face.
Rukhsana is a 23-year old woman who was attacked by her husband and in-laws and forced to reconcile with them.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad left the prominence of his London practice to return to his home country and help the victims of such attacks.
SAVING FACE chronicles the lives of Zakia and Rukhsana as they attempt to bring their assailants to justice and move on with their lives. The women are supported by NGOs, sympathetic policymakers, and skilled doctors, such as the Acid Survivors Foundation-Pakistan, Dr. Mohammad Jawad, attorney Ms. Sarkar Abbass who fights Zakia’s case, and female politician Marvi Memon who advocates for new legislation.
SAVING FACE follows their personal stories and that of the nation of Pakistan as it attempts to tackle this horrific social problem.
********
It is so hard to imagine the pain and suffering these women must go through, and yet as much as these hideous acts are outlawed, as they should be, men still brutalize 1200 women every year, attacking them with acid. And sadly, there is little compassion…and not much is done to these sick perpetrators…until now.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is saving lives. While blood continues to shed in the Middle East, Obaid-Chinoy gives a voice to women who have been silenced and sends a strong message to their attackers that the world is watching…you can no longer get away with your hideous acid attacks.
Obaid-Chinoy, is not only an award winning documentary filmmaker but an activist as well, working with Project SAAVE (Stand Against Acid Violence), which partners with organizations to provide survivors with the surgeries and support they need to start over.
Not only do I consider her a Wonderful Woman Of The World, but she is being recognized for her support of women as well, and rightfully so. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is one of Glamour magazine’s pick for Woman Of The Year. Congratulations to a hero of a girl for standing up and making a difference in so many women’s lives.
Here’s the write:
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy: The Lifesaver

“It takes one second to ruin a woman’s life,” says activist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, 34. “You may need a license to buy a gun, but in many places a man can buy acid from the corner store, throw it on a woman’s face, and from then on she is the living dead.” And that, shockingly, is exactly what happens every year to more than 1,200 women worldwide—victims of horrible, disfiguring acid attacks, most often at the hands of male neighbors, cousins, even husbands seeking retaliation or revenge. While such acts are outlawed in Obaid-Chinoy’s native Pakistan, they often go unpunished. In fact, reports of the incidents have almost tripled since 2010. So the revolutionary filmmaker made it her mission to give women the most crucial form of self-defense available: a voice. Two years ago she and codirector Daniel Junge began persuading dozens of acid-violence survivors to tell their stories. In an amazing triumph, their resulting film, Saving Face, won this year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
Anam Shehzadi, 17 (above, far left), is one of Pakistan’s hundreds of victims. Last year a neighborhood boy threw acid on her; afterward, she says, “I used to cover my face and not want to meet anyone.” Her shame was so great that her family removed all the mirrors from their house. To Shehzadi and many others, Saving Face’s Oscar win—Pakistan’s first—was a joyous validation. Plus, it’s creating huge change in the country’s legal system: Thanks in large part to the film, perpetrators in Pakistan’s largest province are now subject to much harsher punishment, and acid violence is classified as what it is: a form of terrorism.
Meanwhile, Obaid-Chinoy is working with Project SAAVE (Stand Against Acid Violence), which partners with organizations to provide survivors with the surgeries and support they need to start over. Says Melanne Verveer, United States ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues: “She will save countless lives.”
How You Can Help
For the sixth year, Glamour’s Women of the Year fund initative is raising money for an extraordinary cause. This year Glamour is working with Project SAAVE, Obaid-Chinoy’s campaign, to bring medical care to acid-attack survivors. To donate, click here.

I’m blown away by the cruelty that is meted out by these men and that it goes unpunished. Some harsh return treatment might teach them the lessons they seem to need. (send in Madaline?) Just a thought…bc seeing this just makes me angry. The doctor is a good man but that type seem to be few and far between, and I wonder why is that?

The situation for women is terrible the world over. It just depends on where the spot light is being placed on the things men are doing to control women.

America’s Greatest Bike Paths
Safe, Beautiful Trails from City to Countryside That Everyone Can Enjoy
Millions of Americans now are cycling for transportation, exercise and fun. In response, many areas in the US have special paved bike paths. Here are some of the best. (Of course, you can find paths in other areas by searching online for “bike paths” and the name of the city.)
MIDTOWN GREENWAY MINNEAPOLIS
Minneapolis has 85 miles of off-street bike paths (plus 81 miles of on-street bike lanes) that are plowed in the winter, lit at night and open 24 hours a day.
A major section is the Midtown Greenway, a 5.5-mile former railroad corridor that runs through the center of the city parallel to Lake Street, a commercial strip with hundreds of businesses.
It is a quick way across town. The Greenway connects on the west with other paths, including the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Trail, and on the east with trails that run along the Mississippi River. Information: http://www.MidtownGreenway.org.
SILVER COMET TRAIL GEORGIA
One of the longest paved paths of its kind in the US, the Silver Comet Trail runs from Smryna, Georgia, outside Atlanta, for 61 miles to the Alabama state line.
It follows the old railroad line once traveled by the Silver Comet passenger train past small towns, farms, wetlands and forests. Most of the trail is flat, although there are some serious hills at the end. Dotted here and there along the way are restrooms, picnic tables and parking areas. Information: http://www.SilverCometGa.com.
Bonus: When the Silver Comet Trail reaches the Alabama border, it connects with that state’s 33-mile-long Chief Ladiga Trail.
MOUNT VERNON TRAIL VIRGINIA
The Mount Vernon Trail, one of the most scenic bike paths in the country, begins in northern Virginia, just across the Potomac River from downtown Washington, DC, and follows the river for 18 miles to George Washington’s estate, Mount Vernon. There are restrooms and water fountains along the way.
Bikers get spectacular views of the DC monuments, and when they reach Gravelly Point at the north end of Washington National Airport, they can hop off and watch the planes take off and land thrillingly close by.
The trail goes past Arlington National Cemetery and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove and through the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the city’s historic district (this section includes a short stretch of on-street biking).
Continuing along the river and under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, cyclists reach a fairly steep but brief climb as they approach Mount Vernon. A tour of the first president’s famous mansion and a leisurely turn around the grounds should not be missed. Information: http://www.BikeWashington.org.
CHICAGO LAKEFRONT TRAIL
As you ride along the edge of Lake Michigan on this 18.5-mile asphalt bike path, you’ll get a great view of the city’s famous array of historic early skyscrapers. You can make a stop at the Museum of Science and Industry, relax on one of the many sandy beaches, view exotic fish at the Shedd Aquarium or pedal on all the way to the Navy Pier, one of the city’s most popular visitor destinations, to ride the Ferris wheel or play miniature golf before heading back downtown.
The trail is popular with commuters who use it for speed and safety getting in and out of town. Information: http://www.ChicagoBikes.org.
MANHATTAN WATERFRONT GREENWAY
You can bike around the entire island of Manhattan in one swoop—it’s a marvelous journey on a 32-mile paved path. But for most people, it’s best done in segments because you will want to make plenty of stops to take in the sights.
You can start just above the George Washington Bridge on the West Side, then ride south with the Hudson River on your right, West Side Highway on your left, all the way to the Statue of Liberty and the Staten Island Ferry. Next time, cover the East Side, starting at The Battery and traveling up the East River past the South Street Seaport and the United Nations and under the city’s famous bridges. Information: http://www.NYCGovParks.org.
JEDEDIAH SMITH MEMORIAL TRAIL, SACRAMENTO
Also known as the American River Bike Trail, it runs for 32 miles on mostly flat terrain from Sacramento to Folsom Reservoir. It hugs the American River as it passes quaint towns, parklands, woodlands and the campus of Sacramento State University.
There are restrooms and water fountains along the way. Among the sights, each worth a stop, are Discovery Park in Sacramento, the pedestrian-only Guy West Bridge (a small replica of the Golden Gate Bridge) and the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, where in the fall you can watch salmon spawning. Congratulations Michelle on helping President Obama win a second term. I watched elections come in with much less doubt this time. I knew you would come through once you put Madaline on the job.

Fighting for the Middle Class
House Democrats support a balanced, bi-partisan approach to address our fiscal challenges and strengthen our economy. We support an agreement that is grand in scope; that increases revenues by asking the wealthiest to pay their fair share; and that makes responsible cuts.
Any agreement must ensure economic growth that creates jobs, injects demand into our markets, and brings in even more revenue. Congress must take immediate action to tackle the challenge of long-term deficit and debt reduction, while putting job creation and economic growth front and center.
Congresswoman Pelosi receives the spoils of a friendly wager on the outcome of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers. She is joined by several Members of Congress who represent the Detroit Tigers: Congressman John Dingell, Congressman John Conyers, Congressman Sandy Levin, and Congressman Hansen Clarke.
Remembering our Veterans
On the walls of the Presidio overlook, beside the final resting places of those willing to pay any price and bear any burden in defense of our country, there appears a poem with a simple, yet powerful, message: “remember us.” On Veterans Day and all year, we aim to remember, to honor the sacrifice of those who perished in battle, and to care for the brave men and women who come safely home. I was honored to participate in a day of service at the Presidio in honor of Veterans Day on Sunday. There is no better way to remember our nation’s veterans than to follow their example: to engage in acts of service, to give back to our communities – and, in doing so, to strengthen the fabric of our society and the character of our country. By our deeds we can honor the actions of our veterans and the memories of our fallen heroes. We can answer the voices that still call out: “remember us.”
New Funding for Central Subway
On Thursday, San Franciscans sick of suffering the overcrowded 30-Stockton received something to celebrate. Thanks to the signing of the recent Full Funding Grant Agreement, we can applaud $85 million in funding for the Central Subway – creating jobs, expanding public transit and bringing our city closer together. With the support of the community, local leaders like Mayor Ed Lee and Gavin Newsom before him, and federal leaders like Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, our city is well on track for 21st century infrastructure system.

This article goes hand in hand with the insults and disrespect another woman, Ambassador to the UN,Susan Rice, has had to endure by our nation’s highest male congressional representatives.
They have been smearing Ambassador Rice without apology even though they know that they were wrong to accuse her. This is an excerpt from an article by By Hayes Brown on Nov 16, 2012 at 11:46 am.
==================================
Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has admitted that the CIA and intelligence community approved U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice’s talking points before she made her much-derided Sept. 16 appearance on several Sunday news shows to discuss the attacks in Benghazi.
King, one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration’s response to the attack, came to his conclusion following testimony from former CIA Director David Petraeus.
After leaving the closed-door hearing, King spoke with reporters for several minutes about Petraeus’ statements. Rice’s television appearances were among the topics discussed, leading King to indicate that while Petraeus did not personally write Rice’s talking points, the CIA did approve them:
================================
The asshole males knew they were attacking Susan Rice without reason, but they did it to get back at Obama. But to the republican men, women are not worth the respect they give white men. And if she is an OTW woman she rates nothing from them.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:21 am
Some men only write in on your blog to complain about those who right in to relate their horrible experiences at the hands of men. Others like, Al, Howie, and Doug who are intimidated by what they read here post encouraging comments.
It is a nice feeling to know that some men care about what is happening and are willing to acknowledge that a lot of work is necessary to protect women from the dangers men expose them to every day.
I want to extend my thank you to all those wonderful men on your blog Michelle.

Carol, I read that article I think it should be posted in its entirety so that the blog can see how truly beastly the republicans are being to Ambassador Rice. Here it is.

Q: Did he say why it was taken out of the talking points that [the attack] was Al Qaeda affiliated?
KING: He didn’t know.
Q: He didn’t know? What do you mean he didn’t know?
KING: They were not involved — it was done, the process was completed and they said, “Ok go with those talking points.” Again it’s interagency — I got the impression that 7, 8, 9 different agencies.
Q: Did he give you the impression that he was upset it was taken out?
KING: No.
Q: You said the CIA said “OK” to the revised report –
KING: No, well, they said in that, after it goes through the process, they OK’d it to go. Yeah, they said “Okay for it to go.”
Watch King’s statements here:
Rice has been hit by Republicans for weeks for indicating that the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi stemmed from a spontaneous protest related to an anti-Islamic video. However, as Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) has pointed out, the talking points used by Rice were the same unclassified points given to both the administration and Congress by the intelligence community.
Contrary to the current GOP narrative, Petraeus’ testimony made clear that various intelligence sources at of the time of his initial briefing to Congress indicated that a protest arising in response to a similar one in Cairo was the impetus for the attack in Libya.
While those initial assessments were later disproved, the Wall Street Journal has previously reported that this change in thinking began too late to alter Rice’s talking points.
Today’s comments by King towards the intelligence community’s assessments also mark a sharp departure from his previous accusations that Rice should have known sooner that the intelligence that was presented to her was incorrect.
Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have both also recently said that Rice should “have known better” than to make the statements she did during her interviews.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:29 am
Following former CIA Director David Petraeus’ testimony, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) confirmed that the CIA did in fact approve Susan Rice’s talking points before her TV appearances on Sept. 16.
It was telling how much effort the republican men made to protect Petraeus from any adverse experience as they snuck him into the meeting, but were anxious to continue to smear and attack Ambassador Rice.
The woman’s reputation was unimportant. It was all about protecting the man. One who had by his own admission done wrong.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:30 am
Now That Bufoon John McCain is all over insulting Rice who is more qualified than him and Sarah Palin combined. It’s a shame that Arizona has to stick with this fool. He is OLD and has lost HIS MIND.
He was asking for information, the information is provided what does he do? He skips the hearing (reason B’se there were no cameras) Really? This shows how bitter, ignorant, crazy, angry & small minded he has become. America this is the man who wanted to be President, what a shame.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:32 am
When I think about what could have been for women if that party had taken the White House. Its a shame. The better man won. Thank the gods.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:36 am
First, their candidate, Mitt Romney, gives a press conference before the names of the dead are even known and declares that Obama did it all wrong.
Then, when he is proven to be wrong in his facts, his fellow GOP henchmen (McCain, Graham, King, etc.) and their rabid mouthpieces (Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.) go off endlesly AS IF they knew the facts when all they had was their agenda to discredit and malign the president.
Even in the face of an attack these folks won’t come together as Americans. Why american women don’t stand as one when men like this go off on women tells me why women in the Middle East have it so hard.
The women there are not in a position to defend themselves and women who are in a position in other countries like America are impotent because they can’t stand up to the men in their own countries much less aid women in another.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:48 am
McCain is like the typical tiny balled wonders I live around here in Virginia. They puff out their chests and tell us women folk that they are protecting us from the Ni*****ars when in fact they are trying to ensure the OTW men will not be competition for them in the sexual arena with white women.
Many of us are slowly coming to that reality. It is all about lies to maintain a superiority that they got artificially. The reality of the attack on Ambassador Rice by McCain shows that.
A black man threw down the gauntlet, but the gutless wonders like McCain will not pick it up, they prefer to attack a defenseless woman.
=============================
Rice’s Sept. 16 assessment of the Benghazi attack matched CIA and DNI analysis at that time.
As noted above, Rice’s Sept. 16 statements mirror the CIA’s Sept. 15 assessment and the DNI’s office said a week later that just after the Sept. 11 attack, “there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests” and that it “provided that initial assessment to Executive Branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly and provide updates as they became available.”
If Rice’s talking points came from the White House, officials there didn’t alter them much from what the intelligence agencies were saying.
McCain wants a special Watergate-style investigation into the Benghazi attacks, but lawmakers, including many of his Republican colleagues, appear to be satisfied with letting the ongoing investigations take their course.
It also turns out that many Republicans in the Senate aren’t too keen on pre-judging Rice either, should the President nominate her. And if McCain was really interested in getting the facts about Benghazi, he could have attended yesterday’s closed door hearing on the matter instead of holding a press conference attacking Rice and Obama.
So it’s clear that McCain’s real problem here is with Obama, and on that point, the president suggested that McCain give him a call. “If Senator McCain and Senator Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me,” Obama said yesterday. “And I’m happy to have that discussion with them.”
===========================
What’s even more clear is that he won’t fuck with Obama. Not face to face because he knows Obama will rip him a new asshole.
November 18th, 2012 at 8:56 am
Since some posts have touched on the general, I thought a review of that awful book “All In” by the love struck Broadwell would be in order.
=================================
Initial positive coverage of the General David Petraeus’s biography reflects many journalists’ willingness to suspend their critical faculties when it comes to the military.
——————————
That’s because little dicks worship guns and those directing their use.
==================================
Michael O’Hanlon, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, adds, “No one gives a truer picture of the war, or of the finest general of this era and one of the greatest in modern American history.”
And here’s my favorite, from author Thomas E. Ricks: “I’ve known David Petraeus since he was a colonel and written two books in which he appeared, but I still learned a lot about him from this book. All Infeels at times like we are sitting at his side in Afghanistan, reading his e-mails over his shoulder.”
Now look at the Amazon.com customer reviews. Apparently, the book stinks. What’s more, it stinks for some pretty obvious reasons.
Way back in February, a reader named Robert J. Alberts noted, “Paula is obviously a fan and didn’t have any objectivity in the book. Petraeus is either awesome or super awesome. OK. Got it. Next?
There is no more depth.” Someone who may or may not really be named Adam Smith also wrote in February, “You’ll love this book if you like bureaucratic history and thinly veiled hero worshiping.”
Another reviewer adds, “More than a little over the top for hero-worship of [Petraeus.]”
Overall, the book receives an average of fewer stars from its readers than the four that adorned the general’s uniform.
=================================
When will women stop being silly over men who have no respect for them as equals.

Ambuia #7, where do you come off saying, that, “…Others like, Al, Howie, and Doug who are intimidated by what they read here post encouraging comments…”? Is that what you really think? That they’re intimidated? Girl, you are spewing nonsense!

Very wonderful article, what’s wrong with the people?

Can I simply say what a comfort to find somebody who truly understands what they’re talking about over the internet.
You actually know how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
More people ought to read this and understand this
side of the story. It’s surprising you are not more popular because
you definitely possess the gift.
