Save The Bees Please
Posted by Michelle Moquin on January 24th, 2013
Good morning!
Mike, TM: Your post a little while back prompted me to do a little research. This is what I found:
Insecticide ‘unacceptable’ danger to bees, report finds
Campaigners say the conclusion by the European Food Safety Authority is a ‘death knell’ for neonicotinoid pesticides
“The world’s most widely used insecticide has for the first time been officially labelled an “unacceptable” danger to bees feeding on flowering crops. Environmental campaigners say the conclusion, by Europe’s leading food safety authority, sounds the “death knell” for the insect nerve agent.
The chemical’s manufacturer, Bayer, claimed the report, released on Wednesday, did not alter existing risk assessments and warned against “over-interpretation of the precautionary principle”.
The report comes just months after the UK government dismissed a fast-growing body of evidence of harm to bees as insufficient to justify banning the chemicals.
Bees and other pollinators are critical to one-third of all food, but two major studies in March 2012, and others since, have implicated neonicotinoid pesticides in the decline in the insects, alongside habitat loss and disease. In April, the European commission demanded a re-examination of the risks posed by the chemicals, including Bayer’s widely used imidacloprid and two others.
Scientists at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), together with experts from across Europe, concluded on Wednesday that for imidacloprid “only uses on crops not attractive to honeybees were considered acceptable” because of exposure through nectar and pollen. Such crops include oil seed rape, corn and sunflowers. EFSA was asked to consider the acute and chronic effects on bee larvae, bee behaviour and the colony as a whole, and the risks posed by sub-lethal doses. But it found a widespread lack of information in many areas and had stated previously that current “simplistic” regulations contained “major weaknesses”.
“This is a major turning point in the battle to save our bees,” said Friends of the Earth’s Andrew Pendleton: “EFSA have sounded the death knell for one of the chemicals most frequently linked to bee decline and cast serious doubt over the safety of the whole neonicotinoid family of insecticides. Ministers must wake up to the fact that these chemicals come with an enormous sting in the tail by immediately suspending the use of these pesticides.”
Prof David Goulson, at the University of Stirling and who led one of the key 2012 studies, said: “It is very pleasing that EFSA now acknowledge there are significant environmental risks associated with these chemicals. It begs the question of what was going on when these chemicals were first approved. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was 50 years ago but we have not learned the lessons.”
However, Bayer’s Julian Little told the Guardian: “We do not believe the new EFSA reports alter the quality and validity of [existing] risk assessments and the underlying studies. [But] the company is ready to work with the European commission and member states to address the perceived data gaps. We believe it is very important that any political decision relating to registrations of neonicotinoid-containing products should be based on clear scientific evidence of adverse effects … and not on the basis of an over-interpretation of the precautionary principle.”
The chemical industry funded a report published on Tuesday claiming that banning neonicotinoids would cost farmers £620m in lost food production. But Goulson said the report contained “not a shred” of serious evidence.
The effect of neonicotinoid on pollinators is under investigation by the UK parliament and the Guardian has learned that Bayer’s spokesman, Little, is being recalled to explain “discrepancies” in his evidence. “Our inquiry has identified apparent flaws in the assessment of imidacloprid,” said Joan Walley MP, chair of the environmental audit committee. “Despite data from field trials showing the pesticide could linger in the environment at dangerous levels, imidacloprid was approved for use in the EU. We have asked chemical giant Bayer to return to parliament to explain discrepancies in its evidence on the amount of time that imidacloprid remains in the environment.”
Walley added: “The evidence seen by the committee raises serious questions about the integrity, transparency and effectiveness of EU pesticides regulation.” EFSA is responsible for providing expert assessments on safety risks, while national governments and the European commission are responsible for taking action. Bans on some neonicotinoid uses have already been implemented in France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia, but not in the UK.
Evidence submitted to Walley’s inquiry cites a long list of failings in current regulations. They include that it is only the effects on honeybees that are considered, despite 90% of pollination being performed by different species, such as solitary or bumblebees, hoverflies, butterflies, moths and others. Others are that the testing required is far too short to detect chronic or sublethal effects and that the regime was set up for pesticide sprays, not systemic chemicals like neonicotinoids that are used to treat seeds. Even the National Farmers Union, which argues that there is no need for a change of approach to neonicotinoids, told MPs: “It is very well known that the current pesticide risk assessment systems for bees were not developed to assess systemic pesticides.”

Howie, my research on your comments had yielded some very interesting results. I am an amateur presidential historian, but I never would have had a clue if not for your post.
Keep up the good work.

Boost Your Memory in Minutes (and Have Fun Doing It)
We all have heard that the brain, like a muscle, requires regular mental exercise to stay fit. Most people assume that this means hard exercise—learning a new language, attending university classes, etc.
There are easier ways. I recommend fun and simple mental stretch activities that force the brain to look at the world in new ways. These “brain workouts” immediately exercise the brain and help you stay mentally sharp and agile, improving both memory and thinking skills.
Bonus:
Similar types of brain workouts can help prevent later-life cognitive declines. A New England Journal of Medicine study found that people who spent the most time engaged in mentally stimulating activities, such as playing board games and writing for pleasure, were 63% less likely to develop dementia than those who did the least.
Activities to try…
Tap a tune. While imagining your favorite song, drum your fingers on a table or desktop to re-create the notes you are hearing in your head. This encourages the brain to coordinate memory, movement and auditory skills.
Expressing yourself this way cross-challenges the brain and causes it to activate different neural networks than the ones it normally uses.
Rework a word. Write down a multisyllable word, such as “resolution,” “sufficient” or “beneficence.” Then see how many other words you can come up with, using the letters of the original word.
This exercise forces you to see familiar things (the original word) in new ways. You can make it harder by giving yourself only two minutes to do the “word search.”
Timed activities encourage the use of different mental skills, such as speed, attention and flexibility.
Juggle.
Some of the best mental activities also have a physical component. German researchers found that complex motor integration activities, such as juggling, increased the brain’s white matter, tissue that is composed of nerve fibers that transmit information to different areas of the brain.
You can learn basic juggling techniques by watching Internet videos. Helpful: Start with juggling lightweight scarves. They’re easier for beginners to juggle than, say, tennis balls.
Wear your watch upside down. Can you tell what time it is when the numbers on your watch are reversed? It’s harder than you think.
This type of subtle change forces your brain to practice neurobics, activities that engage your attention and involve using one or more of your senses in a new way.
Another example: Using your nondominant hand to brush your teeth. It takes practice!
Doodle.
Doodling does more than keep your hands busy. Using a pen or colored pencils to doodle or draw can change the ways in which you see your environment. It also requires mental focus to look closely at what’s around you.

Michelle, I’m a male who lives in New Mexico. Our republican representatives are insane. White women are just as crazy as the males.
Rep Cathrynn Brown a republican introduced a House Bill 206 that would charge a woman with a third-degree felony if she got an abortion or ended her pregnancy that resulted from rape, incest, or any other criminal sexual penetration because it would be “tampering with evidence.”
What the fuck is wrong with white people? I personally wouldn’t give two shits what they do to each other. The women don’t seem to mind being used as baby farms.
But this type of legislation fucks with latina women. This shit has to stop.

Now that we all know what killed my bees, it is time to pay us beekeepers back for killing all of my bees. Cough it Bayer .
January 24th, 2013 at 9:55 am
Holy fuck, a bee protest in DC? Imagine if all the bee keepers in the U.S. marched and fucking released 50,000-100,000 bees each. In front of the white house. Fuck.
January 24th, 2013 at 9:56 am
Even so, honey bees are pretty damned laid-back. You pretty much have to dry-hump thier queen before they get anoyed at you. They’re like Canadians
January 24th, 2013 at 9:58 am
I would add “unacceptable danger to people”

Monsanto splices roundup into the genes of genetically modified foods
so they can spray roundup liberally on the crops that we eat.
I wonder, could the spread of the Cancer Monsanto be directly related to the bee population decline?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:00 am
Nah, Yata, bumble bees are the true Canadians. They won’t sting unless you’re about to completely destroy their hive. They even head boop you as a warning.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:02 am
When were these chemicals introduced? and did we see the supposed “dire consequences” prior to that time?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:04 am
“…did we see the supposed “dire consequences” prior to that time…”
Yes, but we saw mega profits too.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:05 am
These chemicals don’t just kill pollinators. They kill all types of insects that come into contact with them. Insects happen to be an important source of food for birds. In the last few years we have seen a drastic decline in bird populations. Coincidence or not?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:07 am
A totally safe alternative probably doesn’t exist. How can feeding insecticides to insects possibly be anything but harmful? The original of these chemicals was nicotine; used for years as an insecticide by home gardeners (boiled up cigarette ends).
It does kill small insects such as aphids fairly effectively, and isn’t known to cause problems for larger ones – though what it does to ladybirds and lacewings that eat aphids I don’t know.
These companies have worked on it to produce chemicals that kill aphids and the like very effectively, but in the process seem to have increased the danger to non-target species.
The only safe thing to do is to return to the original if you must use something, plus natural methods of discouragement – African marigolds discourage blackfly, lavender greenfly for instance – and accept that some insect damage is inevitable.
By the way, if you’re a home gardener, spraying aphid infestations with a solution of washing-up liquid is also fairly effective, as is cutting the tops off bean plants at the first sign of a hungry blackfly. Don’t think those methods plus the companion plants can possibly hurt anything.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:08 am
Nobody ever seems to mention what neonicotinoid pesticides actually are–namely (as the name itself suggests), chemical compounds which are analogous to nicotine in terms of their molecular structure and their neurological effects, but more effective than nicotine when it comes to killing insects.
I’m not necessarily opposed to pesticides, but I thought I would point this fact out, given that nicotine has a very bad rap these days, for very good reasons.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:10 am
it is said, wrongly that the EU has banned washing up liquid, but who cares?-they’d never know, nor if you sprayed your roses with a nicotine solution; once you’ve smoked them they might as well be of some use.I’m all for companion planting and organic gardening.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:10 am
Who wants to bet Bayer won’t try something nasty to try and keep selling these awful chemicals?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:11 am
Aubrey, if only they could come up with something effective against socialists, modernists, feminists and queers, not to mention AGW-ists. they do far more harm than aphids.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:12 am
This move by the EU is welcome. In the UK, DEFRA and agri-business will continue to drag its feet but the case against nicotinoids is clear. Bayer, et al, will try to fight a ban to the bitter end. They are the new Philip Morris.
Quite why the short-term profits of farmers and chemical companies comes before longer-term sustainability of the food chain remains a mystery, however.

When in doubt prosecute the victim. Republicans really do seem to hate everyone and go out of their way to make people lives miserable.
This is their idea of smaller government. Just yesterday I saw a blurb about a state that presented a bill that made miscarriages a felony.
Dumb and Mean; The Republican meme.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:15 am
Michelle reading your blog certainly emphasis the bigger issue is how do we deal with people that are legitimately stupid?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:16 am
What are they waiting for? Certainly other factors are involved, but they are interdependent. There is a growing body of research that suggests these particular insecticides weaken bees rather than kill them; they are then more likely to fall victim to varroa mite or other diseases, and less able to cope with poor weather or other environmental stress.
Banning these chemicals would not solve all the problems, true, but it would improve matters and give the bees a better chance. Just because it cannot solve everything is no reason not to stop doing what we know to be harmful.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:17 am
Al, just want to say I missed you. So glad to have your kind of wit on the blog again. Now Michelle’s blog is complete.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:18 am
Mike, They like to make nests in my garage. Every now and then I’ll see one zip into a hole in the ceiling, just going about his bee business. I can be tooling around on my car with the door mostly shut, bee doesn’t care, he just buzzes under that shit all like “see ya bro.”
January 24th, 2013 at 10:20 am
Bernadette, Hey honey, HIVE bee-n reading your comments, you seem to be quite the little worker. Do you have to drone on with your bee-littling?
January 24th, 2013 at 10:21 am
Jesus, Sounds like carpenter bees. The male buzzes around “guarding” but only the female can sting.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:27 am
I don’t see the difference between americans forcing a woman to have the baby of her rapist and a Middle East Nation doing the same.
All that is missing is for them to force her to marry her rapist. With the way american white women follow obediently behind their men, how long will it be before they propose that.
At least Middle Eastern women are against their injustice, to think that american white women are proposing the odious laws against women that only men do here in the Middle East.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:29 am
Isn’t the worker bees female, albeit sterile?
If I recall correctly the males (drones) just chill around the queen, fucking her occasionally.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:30 am
If you were allergic to bee stings you wouldn’t be so concerned about the stinging bastards.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:32 am
If you have ever watched a bee pollinate a flower, you’d know that bees are not out to kill every human being within a 10 mile radius.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:40 am
John #29, You’re obviously not allergic to the fuckers.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:41 am
You could walk through an entire bee FARM being allergic and not have a problem. People don’t understand they don’t give a shit about you until you’re an idiot.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:41 am
A lot of people equate bees with wasps. To be fair, wasps are assholes.
January 24th, 2013 at 10:42 am
As someone who is allergic to bees and spent a good chunk of their childhood on a farm I can confirm. Bees generally give no fucks about humans as long as you leave them alone.
January 24th, 2013 at 11:03 am
I do not see what is so funny about bees dying due to certain pesticides or any other reason.
The job of Bees, as well as many Birds and Bats is to pollinate the crops we depend on to feed this overpopulated world.
Bees are going through a decline in population from a disease which is thinning their population already. Any more man-made stress put on Bees could cause famines. Is that funny? Not to me.
It is good to laugh about things that are funny . . . But the dying off of Bees could mean the dying off of humans from hunger. We depend on them, hence the expression “Busy as a bee.”
Michelle Posted today about “Saving Bees Please“ not because it is funny, but because it is a serious problem. Stopping a large multinational Chemical Corporation such as Bayer from selling a product which makes them profit is a difficult task since legislators are in their pockets.
I thought I would add my two cents today. I do not think it is so funny.

The debate is over folks: She–did—NOT–sing…It’s on Cnn.com right now in the ‘political’ section people..Either you can believe the truth, or you can believe your imagination–but she did not sing.
If you’re confused about why Beyonce did such a good job lip syncing, find the band called “Milli-Vanill… more
January 24th, 2013 at 11:22 am
Does it really matter if she was singing live or lip-syncing. It was still her voice, if she was lip-syncing she still had to record it in her own voice. “Stop being judgemental people. Remember we all have to be judged by all mighty God.
January 24th, 2013 at 11:23 am
For me, the most compelling evidence that Beyoncé was doing it for real is the HELL YES smile on Joe Biden’s face. Now, that is, clearly, a dude standing two feet from an electrifying lady singing like a motherfucker.

Diego #5;
I wish I knew what the frig is wrong with white people and I hope I haven’t yet, nor do I ever catch it. It is getting to a point where I don’t want to be associated with my own race. Crazy, I know.
I knew something was wrong when I learned Columbus discovered America. How in the world does one discover a populated hemisphere. What were the native North and South American inhabitants supposed to be, chopped liver? They were now that the whiteman arrived and slaughtered everyone in sight. Native Americans were even called Indians because Columbus was in fact lost.
So I saw a major flaw and injustice at about age 5, from the invading countries claiming to be “the good Guys”. Yeah, back then Britain, Spain, and France wanted to and did steal this land, killing the pre-existing savages was just another necessary job that was a duty to a good patriotic American.
Then it was decided that free labor would be more profitable for plantation owners and such. So, then the man went to Africa and kidnapped a large number of it’s population and put slavery into existence in this New World. This made the white man very rich and happy.
I can’t even begin to tell you how badly these slaves were treated but they were consider property and owned by someone. This bullshit is still fucking happening. Racism, bigotry, and discrimination are alive and well in the USA.
History is certainly written by the winners.
So, what is frigging wrong with us white people? Don’t ask me, but I do know that it is by no means all of us. There are millions of good white people. They are just not in charge.
Al
January 24th, 2013 at 1:14 pm
As a white 53 year old male, I have to agree with you Al. When I look at the two white males who head the majority and the minority of the Senate and how they tackled the filibuster problem I have to throw up my arms and ask, “What the fuck is wrong with white people?”
January 24th, 2013 at 1:29 pm
Al, I must say, as an old white woman, I’m really sick of these old white guys. Are they ever going to do something for the people of this country?
Or are they just going to hang around Congress pretending they’re working for us? This is governing????
This is one reason I’m not a Democrat, btw. I’m often just as unimpressed by them as I am with the Republicans. I had faxed my Senators and Senator Reid demanding stronger reforms.
It just seems like a no-brainer to me. I dunno, just when I thought we might be able to get something done for the country, wishy washy Reid pulls this. I’m just so disappointed. :(
January 24th, 2013 at 6:57 pm
Harry Reid not getting rid of the 60 super majority rule in the Senate is like the other 43 Presidents not getting, universal medical care for the country, or gays equal rights in the military and in society, or an agency to protect the consumer from the corporate predator, or etc….
A white man will not do shit for the people, he is basically on the take from the highest bidder.
So until the demographics change and both Houses reflect that, the country will be fucked up.

The GOP’s Plan to Rig the Electoral College & Steal the White House
Republican politicians have a big problem. Their massively unpopular policies and offensive rhetoric about minorities, women, and LGBT people have alienated vast swaths of the electorate, making it increasingly difficult for them to win national elections.
And these problems are only getting worse as the country’s attitudes evolves and its demographics change. In fact, the Republican candidate has lost the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 presidential elections.
The Republicans’ Solution: Re-Write the Rules to Game the System and Rig Elections Instead of addressing their fundamental problems, Republican politicians have instead devoted themselves to re-writing the rules and rigging the game:
Make it Harder to Vote: Republican politicians are engaged in a systematic campaign to change voting laws and election procedures in order make it harder for young people, minorities, and others likely to vote Democratic to vote.
Gerrymander:
Because of partisan gerrymandering after the 2010 Census, Republicans have a structural advantage when it comes to the House of Representatives. Even though more than a million more people voted for Democrats for the House in 2012, Republicans still managed to hold on to the House with a 15-seat majority.
Rig the Game:
Now Republican-controlled swing states are trying to rig the Electoral College in order to steal the White House.
How It Works
Red States Stay the Same:
Truly red states keep the current winner-take-all system, thus delivering all of their electoral votes to the Republican candidate.
Swing States Get Divided Up: Swing states currently controlled by Republicans (VA, OH, WI, MI, PA, NC, and FL) will award their electoral votes by Congressional District.
Through gerrymandering, Republicans have managed to pack Democrats into a small number of districts, giving the GOP a large advantage in the aggregate number of House seats they hold in these states.
Bonus Votes for Republicans:
In some versions of this plan, the two remaining electoral votes in each state that are not associated with a House district would still be awarded to the winner of the state’s popular vote.
Virginia, however, has an even more pernicious plan; its plan would award the other two votes to the winner of a majority of the state’s congressional districts. If other swing states adopted this plan, it could shift an extra dozen or more electoral votes to the Republican candidate — a number equivalent to the electoral votes of Virginia or the votes of Iowa and Nevada combined.
The Result — President Romney
The GOP plan to rig the Electoral College means that even if a Democrat wins the popular vote in a state by a comfortable margin, the Republican candidate could still walk away with as many two-thirds or even three-quarters of the state’s Electoral College votes.
If Republican-controlled swing states had put this plan into effect before the 2012 election, Mitt Romney would likely be the president today thanks to the shift in electoral votes in key states.
If all of these states chose the Virginia model that gives Republicans two bonus electoral votes per state, then Mitt Romney would definitely have been the one to be sworn in this past Monday.
This Threat Is Real & Is Happening Now
This GOP plan to rig the Electoral College and steal the White House is not simply theoretical in nature. It’s a real threat to our democracy.
Republicans — including two GOP governors — are actually considering this plan in several of these states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Republicans in the Virginia Senate are trying to pass just such a plan right now.
For more information on this scheme, please see the full report released today by the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
BOTTOM LINE: Instead of trying to win fair and square by persuading voters that their values and ideas are the best for America, Republicans are now instead trying to re-write the rules in order to rig the system in their favor and steal the White House.
January 24th, 2013 at 7:48 pm
We could go on forever about the ignorance of white america. Like white pundits who ask McCain his opinion on any military issue. What the heck could this ex pilot know about military deployment.
I served in the military for 21 years. I know more about the military than that inept pilot who became a prisoner of war because he flew his jet into a tree and claimed he was shot down.
Even if he served without becoming a prisoner of war, as a pilot he would still know next to nothing about how the military conducts its war tactics.
He was a f**king pilot for pete’s sake. And in his case a very poor one. His piloting always resulting in one crash after another.
Once he almost destroyed a battleship when he crash his jet on one. If his father wasn’t head of the navy at the time he would have been washed out.
But instead they sent him to Vietnam and he promptly cashed his jet on his first mission.

I like Obama as well as anyone, but MaryJo White will not get much flack from the republicans because she is the top lawyer for the big banks.
Her husband is a lobbyist for the banks. This is just another revolving door person. She will get a million dollar paycheck from those who she will not prosecute when she returns to the private sector to once again be the lawyer for the banks.
