America’s Disturbing And Pervasive Inequality, In Three Charts

The Census Bureau’s latest estimates of income and poverty released Tuesday reveal that, despite the economic recovery, inequality remains a massive problem in the United States. We’ve assembled three charts that demonstrate the how deeply the problem runs in our society:

1. Income inequality. Five years of economic recovery hasn’t resulted in any income growth for the vast majority of Americans. In 2013, the median income nationwide was $51,900, essentially unchanged from a year before and 8 percent lower than the median income in 2007, the year before the recession hit. The top five percent of earners made more than $196,000, while the bottom 10 percent made less than $12,400.

income inequality

2. Racial inequality. Black and Hispanic Americans continue to lag far behind non-Hispanic white and Asian households in the amount that they earn. The median household headed by a black person earned $34,600 in 2013 and the median household headed by a Hispanic person earned $41,000. That’s compared to $58,300 for the median white, non-Hispanic household and $67,100 for the median Asian household.

race inequality

3. Gender inequality. We wrote yesterday about how the gender wage gap hasn’t budged from last year: women earn just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns. But the poverty rate is higher for women than it is for men as well. The Census found that 15.8 percent of women live in poverty, compared to 13.1 percent of men. And as the chart below demonstrates, the poverty gap between men and women grows as the population ages.

BOTTOM LINE: Five years into the economic recovery, middle class Americans are still struggling to make ends meet. But there is no reason to expect the economy to really hum again and inequality to decrease unless we take action to address the problems. That means supporting policies like these that help working families, not the rich, and that grow the economy from the middle-out, not the top-down.

*****

Readers: The bottom line is we know which party supports these policies. Hint: (not that you need one) It isn’t the repubs. Election day is only a little over 6 weeks away.

    The Yemen regime is corrupt.

  3. Uca Says:

I live in Coca Ecuador. The oil companies have polluted our living areas so badly that we are getting sick from diseases we haven’t ever heard of.

Our jungles and natural forests are being wiped out. White men are evil.

  4. Jabo Says:

Most of the animals in our jungle have disappeared. We had an oil spill in our river and there was no water for the people.

  5. Larry Says:

Where is that beautiful lady named Zen Lill? I hope you are enjoying your summer.

  6. Laura Says:

Michelle, my mother recommended this blog to me. She says that you are the daughter she wished she had.

I was so angry that I began reading your past blogs to see just what your positions were and advice to your blogsters. To my surprise we were of like minds. Granted you have a little better skill with the narrative.

But I can see you as a sister. When I told my mother just that, she smiled and said that she told me that thing about the daughter because she knows how competitive I am.

We now read your blog and comment in separate emails to each other on how we would have responded to those you choose to comment to. She is an ex superior court judge and I’m a practicing criminal attorney. I get some real scumbags off.

Just so you know. If you need some free legal advice I’m available, so is my mom, Judge Lora.

  7. HOWIE Says:

TY #6 Yesterday September 22nd Post:

We are not expecting any full-scale assault from any Aliens.

The Military is flexing its muscles to Russia and China in the Southwest Pacific.

Ty, if I knew something about an alien invasion, I would certainly speak up. I believe that this is just a precautionary exercise for an attack by a foreign nation.

It is a huge undertaking with the US Air Force.

You guys are our first line of defense and offense if need be. I thank you for being there to protect us.

    HOWIE

  8. Zen Lill Says:

Larry, thanks for asking, had surgery on my throat on Friday, I’m fine now, just laying low … too tired to comment on anything right now … but I always return.

  9. Bryant Says:

Talk about racism, the Virginia state police stopped Gonzales in July after he lead them on a high speed chase. They found in his car a mini arsenal of 11 guns including 2 shot guns and 4 rifles, some equipped with sopes and bipods that a sniper would use and a map of Washington, D.C., with writing and a line drawn to the White House.

They didn’t feel that this warranted a notice to the Secret Service. If a white man had been in office you better believe he would have been arrested and reported to the Secret Service.

  10. Debbie Says:

Sorry to hear you were ill Zen Lill. Do take care of yourself. Best wishes.

    Debbie

  11. Ma Qin Says:

Oh Zen Lill. We hope you are doing well. The girls have been calling each other about your operation.

They were frighten that you would get the bad doctor like your famous comedian, Joan Rivers.

We wish you a speedy recovery.

  12. Cameron Says:

Bryant#9, His name is spelt Gonzalez with a z and he was also stopped by the Secret Service out side the fence around the white house with a hatchet in his back pocket.

They checked and discovered he was OCD, PTSD and schizophrenia. They had not been informed by the Virginia Highway Patrol at that time that he had been targeting the White House so they did not arrest him.

  13. Uwella Says:

Zen Lill sorry to hear you needed throat surgery. I hope you are doing better.

  14. James Says:

Zen Lill I was just about to write in to say how pleased I was to have those gorgeous shots of you from back in May of last year.

Just can’t get enough of seeing you in those white shorts and tank top. I was sorry to see that you had to have throat surgery. I hope it wasn’t too serious.

Your commentary has been missed. I tune in for my daily Zen Lilly and I don’t feel right when I miss it. But under the circumstances, I just want to wish you all the best.

  15. TY Says:

Thanks Howie#7, hearing it from you makes me feel better.

  16. Tony Says:

James#14, you are not the only one with great pictures of Zen Lill. I took a few when I saw her walking her dog last year and the shorts she had on then were a serious turn on.

Zen Lill – Glad to hear you are doing better.

  17. Mike,TM Says:

The truly filthy rich are seeing the direction Obama is taking the country towards, away from fossil fuels. They are beginning to divest and invest in the direction towards wind and solar power.

They want to be the ones in control of the new energy grid that will replace the fossil fuel one.

The Rockefellers are divesting openly today, but they have been secretly divesting for about 3 years along with the Gettys and other old oil money.

They understand the wisdom Obama has for America. He will one day go down in history ( if there is a demographic change) as the POTUS that freed the nation from the need to depend on outside sources for fuel.

We will leave all the other nations wallowing in fossil fuels while we are dashing along with free money to invest in other technologies.

    Thanks Obama.

  18. Stacey Says:

Zen Lill sorry to hear you had to have surgery on your throat. You are in my prayers.

    Best wishes,
    Stacey and your gang.

  19. Reba Says:

You are in my prayers Zen Lill. I know God will look after you. Take care not to drink too sweet beverages or eat meals with too much salt.

You are one of the good ones.

  20. Social Butterfly Says:

Get well soon ZL. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

    /SB

  21. Mike,TM Says:

Once again Obama has shown that he thinks way above any who have come before him. The Republicans were hoping that he would get the same uncooperative experience bush got when he attacked Iraq.

Obama has shocked the republicans and the world with the way he has gotten the world to cooperate with him. In the Middle East he has put together Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan and even Turkey in a way that is amazing to those watching.

Obama is a person that commands allegiance and respect from leaders all over the globe. They didn’t just give lip service. They contributed man power, air power, air bases and even got Syria to allow the US to drop bombs in its country.

The Russians were told to shut the fuck up and stay out of the Middle East. Obama has shown what it means to Leader of the Free World. The Chinese are reconsidering taking on the US while Obama is its leader.

Obama insistence not to go it alone. Has proven to be a gamble he took with what it seems to be a sure thing for him. People are talking about nominating him for a second peace prize. They are saying that his willingness to galvanize the people in the region affected before getting involved shows his genuine concern for their welfare.

Qatar was so impressed that it committed it own air force to the fight. They joined the rest of the Middle East nations in asking the United Nations to allow him to lead the rest of the world nations in the presentation to the United Nations on what will be done in the Middle East.

The republicans are so impressed by Obama’ s ability to get these Middle East countries to not only allow the US to bomb the Middle East but to use their own air power to bomb the Middle East with the US.

Key members of the republicans are saying forget he is a “N” we need to take advantage of this situation or we will have ISIS saboteurs here in America and who knows who will become a victim.

So you can expect even if it is just for a little while some cooperation for even the republicans. .

  22. Social Butterfly Says:

Just catching up with some past posts. I wanted to comment about Hilary with all due respect to you Michelle

If Hilary were the only dem in the end I would vote for her over her republican opponent but leading up to that being my last decision, I can only hope Elizabeth Warren tosses her hat in the ring for 2016.

Hilary is in bed with Monsanto. She also made the decision to abet Japan in saving face after Fukushima in my opinion. She told Japan the U.S. wouldn’t test their exports to the US food market. No official testing of the radioactivity on anything we are consuming. And after the government raised the minimum levels of exposure considered dangerous. To me Hilary represents one cog in the wheel of congress doing business as usual.

Again just my opinion but It seems to me Elizabeth Warren has the guts and passion to stand up for what is right for the citizens of the United States. We need a voice of common sense to break up the old guard.
    IMHO

  23. Gloria Says:

I hope you can get Madaline to help two women beat two entrenched white boys. Alison Grimes against McConnell in Kentucky, and Kay Hagan against Tillis in North Carolina.

  24. Charles D. Says:

    Host: Charles D.

    Where: Lake Merritt Park Amphitheater

    When: Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

What: Rally in support of the NYC People’s Climate March! Climate change is real, our home is burning, we must act! Along with hundreds of other events world-wide we will rally for action on climate change. We will have speakers, children’s activities and representatives from multiple environmental organizations to educate us on what is happening and what we must do to stop it!

Can you join us in Oakland on Sunday?

  25. Drake Says:

Who is supporting this bunch of House republicans. They give themselves another vacation when the country is literally at war drooping bombs in two countries.

What happens if the President wants to send troops in to rescue downed pilots? Voting color despite your own best interest is something only a republican white boy would do.
