OHIO VOTERS: You Need To Read This!

Good morning!

Mike, TM: I know that you already posted this, thank you. However, I think it is that important to post it again.

Readers: I will repeat Mike’s comment:

OTWs in Ohio unless you want to lose that state including the members they will send to both houses of Congress, you had better get registered now so that you can vote in November. They are now moving to cut off the date you can register which will enable you to vote in November.

This is your heads up. The republicans are trying to steal the state by eliminating same day registration and voting, and early voting. If you want to have a voice in this election, don’t wait –GET REGISTERED NOW. And spread the word.

Here’s the write from Think Progress:

Supreme Court kills last hope of restoring key early voting week in Ohio

Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 10.39.40 PM

The Supreme Court rejected a petition from Ohio Democrats Tuesday morning to restore a crucial week of early voting known as “Golden Week,” the only time voters can register to vote and cast a ballot in a single visit.

About 60,000 Ohioans voted during Golden Week in 2008 and 80,000 did so in 2012. In 2008, black voters were 3.5 times more likely to use Golden Week as white voters. In 2012, they were more than five times as likely.

The Court gave no rationale for their decision and there were no written dissents released, though justices may have disagreed behind the scenes.

Though a federal district court ruled in May that the cuts were “unconstitutional” and ordered the state to restore Golden Week, a federal appeals court overturned that decision in August, siding with Ohio Republicans who sought to cut this opportunity. A dissenting judge on that court criticized the ruling and argued that the early voting cut “imposes a disproportionate burden on African Americans” who disproportionately depend on that week to vote.

The Democratic Party then appealed, pleading with the federal court to stay the ruling until after the 2016 presidential election, in which the swing state of Ohio is expected to play a decisive role.

Because Ohio does not offer same-day voter registration on Election Day, and because the Governor is refusing to implement online voter registration until after the election, the Supreme Court’s ruling effectively eliminates the possibility for one-stop voting this November.

Blog me.

Black Doctor: Thanks for your post. I’ve never heard the term “racial trauma” but the name is to the point and doesn’t leave one guessing what that would mean. I have no doubt that many OTWs are suffering from it. How could they not when their race is constantly having to deal with racism on a daily basis coming from so many avenues? The effects are devastating, and one can only imagine how difficult it is to overcome. My heart hurts for so many. I wish there were more that I could do.

Peace out.

Remember the comment from that dumb white woman working as the Mahoning county chair for iTrumps campaign? She had said there was no racism until Obama took office and that the BLM campaign “was a stupid waste of time.” Well you gotta love social media !

Sharing her ignorance the outpouring of outrage has caused her to resign her volunteer position as well as her spot as an elector to the Electoral College.

She has since said “my personal comments were inappropriate, and I apologize.”

I find it scary she had an electoral vote. Thank the goddess she can’t influence the EC vote for the next president. But see how easily trump could get elected ? Too many stupid people in government !

Thank you social media for one less.

  2. Crystal Says:

iTrumps was a typo people before I confuse anybody

  3. Imelda Says:

    Crystal#1, amen.

  4. Yolanda Says:

Thank you Michelle for the notice. Let it be known that this is happening in all the republican controlled states. They are doing what they can to repress any vote they feel will not help them gain a political office.

  5. Morgan Says:

I think early voting is a joke. When I grew up everyone voted on election day. My father who worked long hours made sure he was home before the poles closed. The time has come to return to the old method. If you live in the USA and want to have a say in our government vote.

  6. Taylor Says:

When I think of Ohio, what comes to mind is Karl Rove on FAUX claiming that Ohio’s votes haven’t all come in yet (2012) … while Megan Kelly tries to assure him that IT DOESN’T MATTER … ROMNEY CAN’T WIN!

Meanwhile our “Hackers” were fighting their “Hackers” for control of those voting machines (which is why Rove was SURE Romney would win Ohio)

  7. Taylor Says:

even the ny times has recently changed its former policy of never identifying federal judges as “judges” or “republican judges”, recognizing there’s a significant difference.

so, please tell your readers what the political affiliation is (who appointed them) of the three judges on the appellate panel. then please tell your readers what the political breakdown is of the active judges on the full sixth circuit. without that information, your article is almost meaningless.

  8. Louise Says:

If disenfranchised “felons” in Florida had been permitted to vote, Democrat Gore would certainly have carried the state, and the election in 2000.

They refused to allow 12,000 people mostly OTWs to vote by falsely claiming they were felons. The ruling was later over turned but way after bush’s brother Jeb, the then governor had given the state to his brother bush.

What will Florida have as a surprise this election. Well for starters many people will show up to their polls to find many less voting machines. In the regions that usually go democratic, they have been secretly reduced for 200 booths to 60.

That will mean long 3 to 5 hour waits to vote. They intend to close the polls on time so many will be turned away. They are counting on the courts to settle the dispute after the election as they did in the 2000 steal.

The republicans know that if they don’t steal elections there are not enough bat-crazy white folk to elect them. So plan to steal those offices.

  9. Walter Says:

“I am pleased the court agreed that Ohio’s voting period, among the most generous offered in all the states in the nation, is nondiscriminatory,” Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, a Republican and one of the defendants in the case, said in a statement.
    ———————————————————–
gee, how did I know it was republicans pushing for a negative impact on voters?

  10. Ferguson Says:

Taylor#7, The “2″ in the 2-1 majority in this ruling were both appointees of George W. Bush.

I will be so very, very glad when the Supreme Court changes hands under a Clinton presidency and a Democratic Senate.

  11. Loren Says:

No big surprise that the majority votes in this case came from Republicans. When ScamMan Trump asked African-Americans “What the hell do you have to lose” by voting for him (and the Republican ticket), they should have screamed back in unison, “MY RIGHT TO VOTE!”

  12. Geoffrey Says:

the state i lived in did not have early voting until the last ten years. before that, the lines when voting closed stretched more than a block. i was the person assigned to stand at the end of the line when voting closed, so no one else could get in line. who wants to wait in line outside in the night until your time comes?

then the state offered early voting, so you could choose a venue and vote weeks in advance without experiencing any lines. for those who shout about constitutionality, i have news for you.

this is a democracy and as such, every effort should be made to allow people to vote. to do otherwise, as is the GOP creed, is an blatant act to destroy the democratic process.

  13. Sean Says:

Explain to me, lefties, how eliminating a week of early voting that didn’t even exist a decade ago is possibly unconstitutional. There was no early voting for all of U.S. history and it was all constitutional. Going back to how it was doesn’t burden any race, class, ethnicity, etc.

  14. Penny Says:

LOL. The Ohio Secretary of State said, “I hope the Democrats will end their wasteful lawsuits so we can all move forward …”

Reminds me of all those GOP wasteful lawsuits against the President. The GOP: the litigation attorneys’ newest BFF.

  15. Lebron Says:

    This is pure politics.
The Republican judges want to make it harder for blacks to vote in order to enhance the election prospects of GOP candidates.

  16. Kittie Says:

I can’t understand why same day registration/voting only affects Blacks. Don’t they understand they need to register to vote in order to vote before they go to vote?

  17. Abbey Says:

We’ll be happy to explain to you Sean#13, why early voting helps to facilitate the voting process in many precincts (we understand that sometimes these things are just a little too esoteric for Republicans to grasp) if you will tell us your reasons for wanting to see early voting eliminated.

Was it just too much of a hardship on you Republicans? Was it costing you money? Maybe it was because the lines were getting too short for you to feel comfortable. Could that be it?

What was it? We’re really dying to hear.

  18. Sonja Says:

Kittie#16, Well, the poorer you are, the more transportation is an issue. Taking time off from work to register and vote is also more problematic the poorer you are because of the types of jobs.

Which party is more likely the choice of poorer voters and which party is pushing for restrictions on easier voting. Given how good conservatives are at making up conspiracies, why are they passing on such an obvious one that is real. Oh, yes, they are the guilty party.

  19. Logan Says:

Just tell me why blacks are waiting eight hours in line just to vote? And folks in white precincts don’t even have to wait in line?

  20. Huey Says:

When I worked for a republican Secretary of State, we made sure that the voting precincts in Afro-American areas were understaffed and open less hours.

  21. Drew Says:

I have never understood why more people didn’t point to voter restriction efforts like these as evidence the GOP feels it has to win by rigging the process.

You want to claim voter ID laws are necessary to prevent fraud? Well, at least there, you have the premise of a logical argument, however flimsy or non-existent it turns out to be with any scrutiny at all.

But early voting? How on earth does THAT help prevent fraud? The answer, of course, is it doesn’t. It takes away time that Democrats – and many of them African-Americans – use to vote.

Un-small-d-democratic. Why more Americans aren’t outraged is beyond me. Do we not care? Is voting not a big enough deal for us? Or is it just that we don’t have to worry about it and so we don’t care if others do?

  22. Lora Says:

Providing insufficient numbers of voting machines to black precincts should be considered unconstitutional.

  23. Nathaniel Says:

Drew#21, What i want to know is how does this violate the constitution. It is absurd. If you want the law reinstainted then get lawmakers who will reinstate the law. If you want to vote then you can vote. It just makes it harder but doesnt stop you from voting. pleassssssssssssssssssse.

  24. Anthony Says:

Drew#21, Come on, now – only Trumpet is allowed to fuss about voting being rigged. Funny how he’s already whining about it, yet he’d be the first to support this kind of suppressive law.

  25. Sonja Says:

Nathaniel#23, So, you are looking for a Constitutional way to skew the vote in the Republican’s favor? My, do you also consider yourself a patriot?

  26. John Says:

Funny how both of the judges who voted down the early voting were George W. Bush appointees. Anyone surprised?

  27. Blue Says:

What a shame we have to report the political affiliation of judges in every voter suppression case but it’s even more shameful that every time voting rights are made more restrictive it’s because of republican appointed judges upholding republican restrictive voting laws.

  28. Matthew Says:

Whether they were both Bush appointees or not, they were correct.

  29. Jeff Says:

What, no extra time for all the long deceased democrats to rise from their graves and
    vote? No fair.

  30. Sonja Says:

Matthew#28, Why do you say that? They are allowing the Republicans to disenfranchise certain voters at time we should be working to get more people out to vote.

  31. Drew Says:

Jeff#29, Let’s try and stick to what actually goes on with early voting, and the real reason why the GOP wants to cut hours – because, as you note, Democrats use them more.

  32. Palin Says:

Poorer people cannot afford to miss work and lose income to vote during normal hours. All the more reason to declare a national holiday for elections.

  33. Paul Says:

Democrats in Mass. put the voter registration forms in the same envelope with the welfare checks….a not too subtle hint….vote Democrat, or you have to work for a living…

  34. Anthony Says:

That would be a good start, Palin#32, but many places don’t get to close on holidays, which could affect many people in lower-income jobs, many of whom are the very people the law was meant to keep from voting.

  35. Lewis Says:

Anyone else wondering why it is only republican controlled states that attempt to stop early voting>

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel is dropping an attempt to block the state’s largest cities from staring early voting in September for the Nov. 8 election.

A panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court on Monday denied a request by state attorneys to block expanded early voting hours. Schimel could have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to get involved, but his spokesman tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/2bCEOwL ) Schimel decided not to do that.

I guess if they can’t find 2 republican appointed judges to get a 2 to 1 federal appellate court to side with them, they just quit trying to deprive people of the right to vote.

He didn’t do that because the court is evenly divided and he knew that meant the last ruling would stand.

  36. Sam Says:

Lewis#35, The obvious question is why? The equally obvious answer is that he’s a Republican. What is it with Republicans and all these efforts to block voting in this democracy?

  37. Zen Lill Says:

1 Crystal, Yesss thank the goddess it’s one down, her remarks floored me, you have to really have your head deeply intrenched elsewhere to spout that nonsense ‘there’s no racism…’ Unbelievable she had an electoral vote.

I read Black Doctors comment and thought the race trauma term covers what occurs very well; cultural, race and gender trauma is mentioned in the pain body chapter in A New Earth by Ekhard Tolle.

Anything to help voters vote I am for, last presidential I had to go back 3 times because of lines or parking issues, that’s ridiculous and if you’re a working 9-5 (or longer) it’s near impossible. I’ll be sending in a vote from overseas, are you against that, too? (although I don’t doubt that with electronic voting things get counted/rigged depending on how much the hacker is paid to sway the vote)

Unconstitutional, hmm, I dislike that term it’s only a reminder that a group of white men cane together to make decisions that may have been very applicable at the time but much of it could use a redo with some women and some OTW’s in the room this time.

    Luv, Zen Lill
