The Kaepernick Effect Spreads

Good Morning!
Tracking the Kaepernick Effect: The anthem protests are spreading
The timeline of a movement.
LAST UPDATED: September 29, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. ET
It’s been over five weeks since Colin Kaepernick was first spotted sitting down as the Star Spangled Banner was sung at a preseason NFL game because he refused to “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”
In a relatively short period of time, his protest of police brutality and racial injustice in the United States has captivated the country and sparked a debate not only about the state of race relations in America, but about what exactly it means to be a patriot.
As black men have continued to be killed by police — most notably Terrence Crutcher in Tulsa and Keith Scott in Charlotte — Kaepernick’s initial protest has mutated and spread.
Overall, at least 45 NFL players from 13 NFL teams have knelt, sat, or raised a fist during the national anthem on game day. Three teams have linked arms or held hands as a sign of unity amidst the racial discord.
The protests aren’t just confined to the NFL, either.
Fourteen WNBA players from three teams protested in the playoffs. Star soccer player Megan Rapinoe took a knee during the anthem during a NWSL game, and later when representing the U.S. national team. Gold medal swimmer Anthony Ervin raised a fist as the anthem played during a meet in Brazil.
Perhaps most significantly, protests during the anthem have occurred in at least 37 high schools, 17 colleges, and two youth leagues in 30 states across the country.
The peaceful protests have not come without a cost; kids as young as 11 have received death threats, and professional players have lost endorsements. Still, nearly every day, more athletes of all ages take a knee during the national anthem at sporting events, and there’s no indication they’ll stop anytime soon. In fact, some NBA players have already told reporters they plan to join in once their season begins.
ThinkProgress has been monitoring the spread of the movement closely. Below, you will find a timeline of the protests breaking out across the nation.
This piece will be updated regularly as new anthem protests in the sports world emerge. Please email lgibbs@thinkprogress.org if you are aware of any missing from the list.

Readers: Although the Kaepernick Effect is spreading, not everyone is kneeling down to the National Anthem. The Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James won’t join Colin Kaepernick. Although James did speak out against recent police killings that have amplified Kaepernick’s protests, saying that they have created a “scary-ass situation” for those who, like him, are parents of young black children.

With a nod to yesterday’s post, I just came across this article today, “How to Contact the 17 Banks Funding the Dakota Access Pipeline.” The article lists emails and phone numbers to contact the banks funding the pipeline. You can tell them you disapprove of their underwriting the project.
More importantly, you can see for yourself which banks support this, and if you bank with one of them, MOVE YOUR MONEY. Doing so cuts their bottom line and reduces their power. This is voting with your dollars – don’t support institutions that abuse your belief system.

The New York attorney general has served the Trump Foundation with a cease and desist order that requires it to stop fundraising in New York, alleging it is not properly registered in the state.
‘The failure immediately to discontinue solicitation and to file information and reports … with the Charities Bureau shall be deemed to be a continuing fraud upon the people of the state of New York,’

Julian Assange better not fuck up the election for Hillary. He says he is going to release “damaging information” tomorrow or Wednesday that will turn the election for Trump.
Hey Aliens, anyone out there hungry?
October 3rd, 2016 at 4:45 pm
4 Banns I agree I’ve been watching Assange rolling out YouTube videos against Clinton with that last ‘damaging’ phrase thrown out there. People, we cannot have Trump as president.
I am out of country, do you have any idea how much credibility we have lost out in the larger world for running a joker like this? I just shake my head as I attempt to explain … everyone from other cultures get it that if this guy isn’t fit for presidency and they’re stunned we let it get out of hand (and it speaks to how many openly racist and every -ist we’ve got living in the US) they and YOU should find that appalling but no. *sigh*
Abey and every commenter yesterday, I’m with you, fight the good fight for your rights.
/SB thanks for the links. There’s voting and then there’s speaking up with your money.

Social Butterfly#1, you have the right idea. I took my money out of Bank of America and sent them an email why.

/SB #2 wow that is how it’s done! Money talks, I’m just bummed to see US Bank and HSBC on that list.

let him kneel away…then sit on the bench for most of the season. That way we all make a statement.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:13 am
Too many people spend time worrying about others using their Constitutional right and it’s getting old. Kaepernick is protesting peacefully and within his right.
He’s not attacking people, blocking traffic or looting. You’re worked up because someone believes in something you don’t, or vise versa.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:16 am
This cr*p has been going on far longer than with Кaepernick’s little hissy-fit. The difference is that the have cowed to much of America into putting up with it.
By threat and intimidation worth of the Mob, the Progressive’s now have a strangle hold on much of the public debate on any subject. Those lacking a spine (yes you Goo-dell) won’t act in opposition for fear of irritating the beast.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:20 am
Love the line,
“Just because you have the right to do it – doesn’t make it right!”
Well hon, you are entitled to your OPINIONS.
And that’s ALL they are.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:20 am
When I wore a uniform, the biggest problem I had was coming to the realization that I was risking my life to protect the “Blame America” crowd. Not a good feeling…
October 4th, 2016 at 3:22 am
I don’t like what he is doing, but when I served in the navy, it was to protect everyone’s rights – yes, even those people with whom I am 100% ideologically opposed.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:23 am
He isn’t exercising a protected right. He works for a private entity who is perfectly legal in having a code of conduct/speech to work for that particular company. The freedom of speech is primarily intended to allow you to speak out at any time against the government and they cannot persecute you for disagreeing with them or protesting them. Just as you have the right to petition them as part of the 5 freedoms of the first amendment.
I understand your point however, and if his company (the NFL in this case) chooses to allow him to do this during their events, that is their decision. It would also be perfectly legal for them to sanction, fine, and/or fire him for his activities if so deemed to violate their code of conduct, as they have many others for different offenses that violated their particular code of conduct, although fully constitutional.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:24 am
Howard#11, Yeah, you certainly don’t want to accidently hear someone speaking truth, moron.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:25 am
if the only way kaepernick can tell those who don’t think he’s a good enough quarterback to play in the NFL is to create a scene to cause further chaos in hopes that the whole thing falls apart. then by golly, that’s what he’s going to do. don’t you just love that rationale?
October 4th, 2016 at 3:26 am
Just because America is best country (or one of) for black or gay Americans, doesn’t mean there aren’t still injustices.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:27 am
Very…admit it…you are a closet Social Justice Warrior. You think it is your job to use your position being paid for something else. To push your agenda.
But OK…for the moment we will go with your premise. Then that means it is OK for people to voice their opinion of the behavior. And not only that. Stop paying and supporting, or attending such events. So don’t come back crying when you lose business, when no one comes to your aid, no one has jobs and the Gv has less taxes to pay for social programs, or for education, and so on. Keep up the stupidity. And it will at some point direct affect you and others across the world.
Funny how you don’t hold that same opinion when soldiers speak out against Obama. Or when a soldier was trying to stop young boys from being rapped by Muslims. Where was you and the libs, and the LGBTs…crickets.
Bottom line…you use the position for your own agenda. Then so be it. Then expect a response. Funny you don’t hold the same standards when Christians do such things.
But hey…Liberals are use to being on their knees serving a master. So it is a conditioned type response for them.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:28 am
And women have the right to an abortion
whether some people like it or not.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:28 am
“Social Justice Warrior” is the loony right’s new “feminazi”
October 4th, 2016 at 3:30 am
Stan#13, Tough! You were getting paid to protect everyone, whether you like their politics or not. Quit your bitchin’…
October 4th, 2016 at 3:32 am
@Katy, Lois, OK…Tell you what. Explain why people should defend, protect and die for Gays, or the LGBTs, or for the country, or for you. You wouldn’t last if we started saying we would not defend you. Heck…100 to 1, you would be crying within a week if the system collapsed and their would be an emergency.
But it is funny the LGBT and others will honor their flag. All why expecting the people who honor the U.S. flag defends them. Since the Flag represents Nationalism or group of people or homogeneous group. To disrespect it. You are actually respecting yourself, the LGBTs and others in the process. Not only that. Then again. Why should people fight for Gays?
If you have no belief, you have no standards, if you have nothing to fight for or protect. Then everything you are saying will mean nothing…
Because the only other statement you are saying is to say nothing, to do nothing, to submit. That is what you are really saying.
And Very….
Reference the opinions. That is bull. When you are on the job. I doubt you would say that if you was paying tens of thousands of dollars to have repairs done on your place. Or getting your car fixed, or was in the hospital getting treated, or at the grocery store trying to buy something. And the employees started pulling this stuff.
If anything Very…you just proved Stan’s point. And remember that the next time you are in a Emergency room and need immediate care and someone decides to start doing this stuff.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:33 am
It’s time to waive him and don’t be scared to do it because teams do it every season.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:33 am
Also, Some blacks are mad because they were born black it seems.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:34 am
I believe the column refers to the “Kaepernick Effect” that has spread to other players in the league and to other sports over the last week,
I also believe that these people could be “Potential Domestic Terrorist” and should be put on the Domestic Terrorism Watch List along with, (if not already) the BLM support group.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:35 am
Robby#23, are you an idiot? If/when police only protect who they agree with, they are no longer police. They are private security.
Why should they defend and protect us? Because it’s the job they signed up for – to protect everyone.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:37 am
No refuge could save the hireling or slave
From the terror of flight or gloom of the grave
Can any of you so “patriotic” please tell me what part of this stanza from the beloved National Anthem ‘symbolizes pride and freedom’?
October 4th, 2016 at 3:40 am
It hurts the right’s poor, fragile feelings when people exercise their Constitutionally protected righ, except when it agrees with their white, Christian privilege views.
I like many who think for themselves have no gods and no masters to answer to.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:41 am
Ruth/AF#28, Please understand the meaning of those words you bastardize before you make yourself look so foolish.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:42 am
The payback for “Krapenneck” is building up. He became a Muslim in July but still has tattoos that defy Allah. His anti police socks are also ugly. He’s a real piece of work!
October 4th, 2016 at 3:43 am
Just because crapernick has the bitch hair doesn’t make him a bimbo.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:43 am
Monkey see monkey do.
These people kneed help.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:44 am
I am really disgusted with the NFL allowing their employees to disrespect our flag and our country and on 9/11! There is no excuse for their actions.
9/ 11 was not about them and their personal agendas, These are Americans? Then why don’t they know what the flag and anthem mean and what they represent?
It stands for the men and women who have fought and died over the last 200 years for this country and your RIGHTS and FREEDOM! They want to speak out? Then do it, on your own time.
These issues, which I am not quite sure of because no one really says what issues they are sitting on their asses for, have nothing to do with the flag or the national anthem.
The National Football League needs to address the actions of their players . Maybe we need to quit watching football!!!
October 4th, 2016 at 3:46 am
Rocco#30, I asked a question. I was seeking understanding. If you don’t know the answer then you should probably keep your comments to yourself.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:47 am
All based on lies and the need to put your own self above the average struggling American citizen…my advice be an American without hyphens and be happy, you live in the nest, most just and free nation in the world.

Glen#37, Hold on a second here, who is the one that is offended and wants to control people’s thoughts, behaviour, and basic freedoms. It’s the vapid blonde you seem to worship.
And btw, I don’t support Obama, or Hillary, or Trump.
October 4th, 2016 at 3:55 am
Bob#39, So that means you’re a Third Party supporter, just throwing your vote away. How smart is that?
October 4th, 2016 at 4:09 am
Thanks Michelle for this article. It looks like the right thought they could jump all over Kaepernick and nip this attack upon another of their sacred images in the bud.
But once again it shows why the blacks are special bane of the white boy. They don’t cower easily. And most importantly their people stick together when they feel the cause is righteous.
I am a third generation Japanese in America. My parents were Nichi, Second generation. They were put into concentration camps because they were Japanese Americans. Many like my parents refused to discuss their incarceration, the before and after with their children.
Ergo white america got a pass with us. But the blacks keep history alive so that it can’t be repeated. If you look at some of the small towns in America, whites who control those towns have effectively pushed back the clock so they can terrorize their OTW populations.
They arrogantly demand that those who they are taking their Constitutional rights from stand for anthem that glorifies the right of whites to abuse others because of the color of their skins.
I don’t know who I admire most, Kaepernick for his taking a stand or the people who have rallied around him. I do know that many of my generation foolishly rally around the whites who imprisoned our parents while standing and singing their national anthem.
I will no longer stand for that bullshit or that bullshit anthem. It is my right as and American and I dare anyone to stop me.

#14 Blake, you’re a man after my own heart. It’s about everyone’s thighs whether you agree or not.
#13 Stan, sorry you feel that way but I sort of get where you’re coming from, but it’s only disappointing and but a good feeling of you were fighting for everyone freedom but the attached expectation infers that it’s freedom as long as you do the ‘right things’ as defined by you (or let me blame your indoctrination led belief system), see Blake’s comment.
If you’re going to be a country that stands for freedom then it means exactly that.
In the late 60′s FBI’s Hoover basically shut down the black panthers, who were actually, contrary to popular belief, just giving power to the people. Not doing anything TO white people just empowering themselves, and why wouldn’t they. White people couldn’t handle it so there was systemic elimination of powerhouses like MLK, so much for the civil rights act. If this is the way this man wants to handle it NOW, making it about the anthem lyrics then so be it. Sit. Kneel. Fist up. He’s free to do so, at least that’s what ‘home of the free and the brave’ is supposed to stand for, isn’t it? Or are some still believing they’re more equal than others…hmm…

All of you disparaging Kaepernick, and whether you support or don’t support his actions – what he is doing is totally American. It doesn’t matter what he is protesting. The fact is, he is protesting, via civil disobedience, in a non-violent way. This is totally American and what our country supports – FREE SPEECH. I wholeheartedly support his efforts.

Looks like Florida is gonna get hit. The Hurricane Watch Center says Our Friends on the southern east coast should expect some trouble from Matthew. Nicole has now formed. It’s still an Category 1 storm but if it picks up from the winds from Matthew, it could be a double whammy for Our Friends.
Let’s help them.
