Don’t Think It Can’t Happen
Posted by Michelle Moquin on September 28th, 2016
Good morning!
I was so wrapped up in Trump’s weird behavior during the debate that I never congratulated Clinton for a job well done. While Trump who was just basically crazy, Clinton was calm, clear, cool, and coherent. So did the needle move to the left?
I read on the Huff Po: ”If there are any women still on the fence about Trump, these latest comments should send them screaming into Clinton’s arms.”
God, I hope so. I have faith.
Just in case you you’re wondering what it would look like with Trump as President, I was thinking that exact same thing myself.
I found this write. The title caught my interest and the content inspired me to post it. Mostly because I have read many comments from the left on Facebook, a few from people that I personally know, who think there isn’t much difference between Clinton and Trump. That sentiment completely baffles me.
Here’s the write from Common Dreams:
The Left Underestimates the Danger of Trump
I know we just had the fifth anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, but there is little to celebrate at such a grim moment. That being the likelihood Trump may very well win.
If he does, Black Lives Matter will be declared a domestic terrorist outfit, just like the Earth Liberation Front was under Bush.
Trump and Attorney General Giuliani would relish using the National Guard to crush blockades of oil pipelines and trains, and indigenous people defending their lands. There will be no more climate justice movement or even hesitant steps toward limiting climate change. An English-only law would likely be passed, DACA be withdrawn, and sanctuary cities outlawed. White supremacists, Neo-Nazis, the Klan, and the Alt-Right would all be welcome into his administration, overtly or covertly.
There would be an all-out assault on reproductive rights and Planned Parentood.
Significant gains made at the National Labor Relations Board in the last few years will be overturned.
Huge swaths of the West under federal control will be turned over to logging, ranching, mining, and oil and gas industries.
Tens of millions would go from inadequate healthcare to no healthcare.
The Alt Right will aggressively disrupt the left.
Massive voter suppression becomes the norm.
There will be organized vigilante violence, perhaps even mini-pogroms, against Muslim and Mexican communities with the state turning a blind eye.
Don’t think it can’t happen; the WWI period saw hideous pogroms against African-Americans and Chicanos with state support. Entire communities were wiped out and thousands killed.
This would just be the beginning. Trump makes Reagan’s Voodoo economic policies like a beacon of rational economic planning. His combination of budget-busting tax cuts, decimating social welfare, roiling U.S. alliances, and abrogating free-trade deals would send the economy into a nosedive. As soon as a recession hits, Trump would immediately go hunting for scapegoats to distract his followers. This could include a ban on Muslim immigration, a registration program, and mass round-ups of immigrants, meaning concentration camps to hold them before they were ousted, overseen by his “deportation force” of Brownshirts.
There is a quaint notion on the left that somehow Trump is hot air. This ignores the dynamics he’s set in motion that will make new types of state-sponsored racial violence all but inevitable. This is not just a quantitative change over Obama and Clinton, but a qualitative one. In fact, it may even be worse that what I am outlining here. This is a man who muses about using nuclear weapons, he ignores even basic bourgeois political norms or rules, and he is lustily cheered by tens of millions when he calls for the assassination of his opponents and mass ethnic cleansing.
Yet a significant portion of the left is obsessed with how terrible Hillary Clinton is, both as a candidate and politically. As if this is somehow news. I see very little from the Facebook left on the extreme dangers Trump represents. I’ve gone to six different Trump events, and it’s evident he has consolidated a white nationalist movement that is demanding a 21st century apartheid state. Even if it doesn’t happen right away, Trump will inevitably go down this path as he sabotages the entire economy and U.S. foreign relations.
Meanwhile, there is a bizarre faith on the left that the ruling class will somehow keep him in check, despite the fact he will have control over every branch of government. This is matched by a warped belief that somehow extreme racist violence will create new left-wing mass movements. In reality, all the recent organizing gains will whither as the left is forced to wage losing defensive struggles against violent white nationalists.
No one will be able to stop his dictatorial, white supremacist agenda. Congress won’t stop him. He will have a majority on the Supreme Court, and while sections of the ruling class may be deeply unhappy, they will still be safe and obscenely wealthy and can always escape.
This election is a choice between two movements. Do you want to see movements like Black Lives Matter, Climate Justice, low-wage workers, immigrant rights, and other left social forces continue to grow and develop? Or do you want to see Neo-Nazis, the Klan, the Alt-Right on the offense and backed by a Trump administration?

Prez Clinton did a great job. Lester Holt was a joke IMHO.
Here’s another joke I hope will put a smile on your face Michelle.

I love comedy.
But the truth is he simply is the worst candidate in history to run with the least amount of qualifications.
Yesterday was national voter registration day. I hope everyone reading is registered but if you’ve still not, get it done! We need to do all we can to get madame secretary elected !

2 Chris sad but I’m not shocked.
Mischa, that ^ is exactly what I meant by Idiocracy, the movie is supposed to be a comedy but it could be our tragedy bc one thing leads to another once you start dumbing down society (and clearly that already happened, he’s a candidate) all kinds of things can spousal out of control fast.
Scapegoating and passing the buck are what he is a master at, it’s all part of the dark triad personality, look it up, (it could be insidiously in your life already) I say look it up just so you know who you’re dealing with here. If you’re still digging him, you may possess enabler traits yourself (google that too, you’d be surprised at what you may find out about you and your own belief systems)… Or you’re just a racist and every other -ist, but if you believe yourself not to any of that -ist stuff then I’m willing to cut you slack till you open your enabler eyes. Go google it.

Congress on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to override a veto by President Obama for the first time, passing into law a bill that would allow the families of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to sue Saudi Arabia for any role in the plot.
Democrats in large numbers joined with Republicans to deliver a remarkable rebuke to the president. The 97-to-1 vote in the Senate and the 348-to-77 vote in the House displayed the enduring power of the Sept. 11 families in Washington and the diminishing influence here of the Saudi government.

Social Butterfly#1, Loved it. I passed it on to so many people last night and they all loved it too.
Where do you get these gems?
You are becoming my favorite favorite.
September 29th, 2016 at 1:34 am
This is my first time writing in. I have been on and off for about 3 years with you blog Michelle. I love that you are developing your Social Butterfly character more. She is just wonderful.
I’m an attorney who specializes in LGBT cases of discrimination and hate crimes. I often run into clients and their associates who are a member of the LGBT community who are trump supporters.
I cannot tell you how insane that is. They seem to either have no clue or so greedy or racist that it doesn’t matter that their lives will full of discriminatory acts if he is elected as long as he keeps the minorities in check and their taxes low.
Thanks for the smile Social Butterfly.

Prism Princess if you have ones that have experienced this, let them know that they have to begin as soon as possible to check the damages because there is no hope for anyone caught in its closure.
Many have been unfairly(in my opinion) caught in its deadly web. Once it closes, none have returned to share their experiences.
The Chostelo as we call it has been around in its various forms for thousands of centuries in legend. The Emperor has perfected it into a lethal weapon nonpareil.
It remains a point of contention in areas not immediately within his aegis. Some have portended war will result because of the staggering loss of life to its use.
September 29th, 2016 at 1:56 am
Zen Lill#2, I agree. I have a friend who was en paneled for jury duty recently. He said the state used every trick it could to disqualify niggers, his word not mine.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:05 am
Zen Lill#3, my god, you are good. I am married to one. He is the spitting image of trump down to the lie he is a billionaire.
Personally we donate to the republican party on a level that allows us in on their strategy sessions. The men are in total control. We women just fill in the gaps and take their agenda public.
The plan is to have us say the awful things to women and OTWs(love that acronym) they support. Some of the women have expressed to me they think some of the party platforms are appalling.
I try not to roll my eyes when they pick the “some” they find fault with. Especially since it would be difficult to find “some” that would be good for anyone but the wealthy.
If I outlive the creep I’m married to, I will shock our privileged clique because if I take a lover or remarry, it will be with an OTW. White men are just not worth the aggravation.

Social Butterfly#3, still laughing. Thanks
September 29th, 2016 at 2:07 am
From Washington#6, It’s a white world. Not surprising you would find enough whiteboys on both sides of the aisle willing to dis the black guy.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:17 am
Social Butterfly#1,
“But the truth is he simply is the worst candidate in history to run with the least amount of qualifications.”
The truth is the GOP have been nominating an increasingly unqualified lot beginning with ronald reagan. The chief qualification for this lot is their willingness to favor white males over all else.
It was inevitable that they would arrive at a trump. It is a testimony to our race that we have absorbed them and especially trump so readily into our values or rather lack there of.
It seems that as long as race is the issue, white America for the most part is willing to give a pass to any other negatives the candidate may have.

Loved the ditty Social Butterfly and the rest of your logic is just that very logical.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:29 am
Michelle, The best chance of preventing this nightmare scenario from happening is to do whatever you can to elect Hillary Clinton. She is endorsed by Bernie Clinton and Elizabeth Warren, true progressives.
The Green Party is one big mistake that nobody has yet pulled the plug on. It has no effect on federal level except to help elect Republicans.
Yet people keep clinging to this delusion that somehow the Green Party will emerge as a major progressive force. It is a spoiler party, nothing more and nothing less. And this time around it could give us a fascist president.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:31 am
A Green Party Vote is a Wasted Vote
I voted for Ralph Nader in 1996 & 2000. After 20 years of running candidates for US President/Vice-President the Green Party has been an abysmal failure. Don’t waste your vote like I did.
1996 – Ralph Nader/Winona LaDuke 0.71%
2000 – Ralph Nader/Winona LaDuke 2.74%
2004 – David Cobb/Pat LaMarche 0.10%
2008 – Cynthia McKinney/Rosa Clemente 0.12%
2012 – Jill Stein/Cheri Honkala 0.36%
2016 – Jill Stein/Ajamu Baraka ?
September 29th, 2016 at 2:33 am
Walter#14, excellent analysis. This is not the first time an overtly racist ultra-nationalist has run for high office.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:34 am
Michelle, Are you kidding me? The Left hates Clinton so hysterically that she is literally being personally blamed for every war on Earth for the past 15 years.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:35 am
I see civil war as the ultimate outcome. We’re heading that way regardless of who wins this. Trump will just precipitate the crisis.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:38 am
Hillary Clinton has a record in government, that is what she is running on. She even has a record from when she was First Lady and fought against the drug companies, etc to try to get a universal health care plan into law.
She has numerous votes from when she was a senator from New York for eight years. The votes are all on the public record. President Obama thought highly enough of his former opponent for president to appoint her Secretary of State and she finished four years serving with high approval ratings.
She is probably slightly to the center on a number of issues that Democrats care most about but has a progressive agenda posted on her website and is running on a progressive Democratic Party platform.
She has a reputation among politicians as someone who works extremely hard and doesn’t give up. She also has in the past been able to work across the aisle on some issues which is a skill many politicians nowadays seem to lack. And she is known as the first person to say women rights are human rights.
She has a long history of helping children beginning as soon as she graduated from Yale Law School. She did remarkable work helping first responders after 9-11.
She has dedicated her life to helping people. I certainly will have no problem voting for Hillary Clinton. Her record isn’t flawless but it certainly is good enough for to be highly regarded.

Thank you Zen Lill for making me write this:
I am a progressive who thinks Trump would be great for this country, and progressives.
Think about it: last week Trump said we’ve got too much “free expression” in this country. As an activist, wouldn’t it be great to have a president who actively seeks to empower people in the executive branch who want to curb activism?
Trump praises autocrats like Putin because they are “strong” and have “control” of their countries. Aren’t progressives all about increasing authoritarian control over populations?
Trump says he would increase bombing and wouldn’t be afraid to use nukes. Wouldn’t it be great for us to finally have a president who is open and honest about their war mechanizations? I mean, at least we knew where Dick Cheney stood.
Trump talks down TPP but in real life makes clothing lines overseas, gets most of his capital from overseas, and has bragged about using bankruptcy to protect himself from investors, including retirees.
He also brags about how little in taxes he pays and was fined several times for housing discrimination. Why shouldn’t we project progressive values of equality and fairness onto someone who has lived a life and done business in a manner that is openly hostile to these values?
What’s wrong with ignoring his actions and taking him at whatever his word-of-the-moment is? And who cares if we have yet to see his tax returns to evaluate whether or not anything he says is true?
Getting a president in there who breaks this nonsense tradition is so progressively worth it! Oh, and to boot, he said last week he’d appoint an openly anti-choice, anti-labor nominee to the Supreme Court. Man, why wouldn’t we want that?!
The progressive case for Trump is an easy one. It’s time we embrace it!
September 29th, 2016 at 2:43 am
Michelle, I love your logic, In this election, we are being asked to vote for a Demon, or a lady who has spent much of her career catering to Demons…and if I choose instead to vote for a true anti-war progressive like Jill Stein, I’m the bad guy? How about blaming all the unreasonable, deluded, so-called liberals who think nothing of putting the hedge-fund/corporate loving war-hawk in the White House?
September 29th, 2016 at 2:53 am
If you think that this election is a referendum on the American Empire there is not much to said ( in such a limited space).
The American Empire exists and will continue to exist after election, regardless of election results. It does not rest on the will of any one office holder. Within that reality specific courses and events will occur as a result of the election.
That Hillary Clinton will pursue a course to a nuclear WW III or some mildly lesser horror is an article of faith among some posters. It is safe to say most Americans do not see that as a realistic assessment. There is risk in her foreign policy inclinations, but nowhere near that risk. So within the reality of a declining but still very real American Empire we accept that risk.
We are more directly and immediately concerned with the course of the country itself. Pragmatically, we assume that she will appoint to her administration broadly liberal, rather technocratic persons.
Courts, from the Supreme Court on down will be filled, again, with broadly liberal to moderate judges. We expect to see vetoes or signings roughly in line with what we have seen from Obama. That is largely a function of what occurs with and in congress. That is my pragmatic assessment of a vote.
This assessment I think would stand regardless of the republican candidate.
My other reason for my vote is more fundamental, particular, and firmly principled. It is the reason that seems to set some “progressives” into a tizzy.
A broadly racist, militant white nationalist movement has achieved leadership in the Republican Party. That leadership, with wide support among the white population, expressly advocates a range of racist actions, positions, and policies.
I believe it the duty, the utter duty, of progressive Americans to oppose that racist movement, even if it came dressed, as such movements have in the past, with the most populist and popular of programs. We have failed too often in that duty.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:56 am
Fine assessment Walter#13, and Zen Lill#2, Trump is a moron. The fact that we are considering electing a moron shows how far we have fallen, and how low most whites in America will stoop to retain their privileged status.
September 29th, 2016 at 2:59 am
We are true progressives here. It’s Hillary’s fault if we choose to vote in a way that will give an explicit White Nationalist and his acolytes the reigns of federal power.
Who really cares whether he appoints people to the courts who take narrow and limited views of freedom of expression and speech? Anti-choice, even birth control–you are just trying to scare us!
We will protest our way to fixing things. We know that Rudy Giuliani, as Attorney General, has a soft spot for progressives. As the saying goes, “Sometimes to be progressive, you have to go regressive.”
September 29th, 2016 at 3:46 am
7 Tina thanks fr the reminder, went back to watch the video!
/SB that was priceless, meant to list that braggadocio thing in my list of trump debate faves yesterday.
You’re a fabrication of Mischa’s? Just one more beautiful fabrication of her brilliant mind.
Prism princess, what is the chostelo exactly?
11 Beatrice, thank you and listen they are everywhere and they’re usually charming manipulators in which case you become a willing participant … living in cognitive dissonance until one day in a moment you listen to your inner self that’s been in a slightly baffled state and you realize he/she/they have been gaslighting you. (Making you think you’re the crazy or sensitive or angry one – over nothing) you have to always be mindful it can happen slowly. Speaking of, we’ve been dumbed down in this society over time, through indoctrination of religion mostly, make sure you’re filling in your little girls dressed in their best for church on Sunday that the books are written down by men after a lot of years of playing a game of telephone so at best it’s got symbolism and at its worst it’s got rules that don’t serve the greater good of women. You can say all that nicely so you don’t scare your kids.
SuzyQ, did you catch Elizabeth Warren taking out the CEO of Wells Fargo? Search it in YouTube, luv her.
22 Kalvin, luv the satire : )
25 Sonya we def have fallen, common sense is even all that common anymore.

Yes ZL I did. I love her too. Early on I was in total support of her running for POTUS but I know now she’s most effective in her current position
Speaking of Wells Fargo, California treasurer John Chaing said yesterday the state will halt investments in Wells Fargo securities for a year and will also stop using Wells Fargo as a broker-dealer for buying investments and not use Wells Fargo as an underwriter for California state bonds where the treasurer assigns the role. California’s treasurer is one of the largest bond issuers in the nation
Now the labor board is investing WF for firing employees who called to report on the fraudulent bank accounts they forced employees to open.
I hope WF gets taken down. Anybody that still banks there and lets these crooks use their funds has been warned and I believe they are just as responsible for keeping this bank viable. That’s how karma works. My advice is get out now if anybody reading is still with WF
