At The Movies, The Women Are Gone

I live in the D.C. metro area, which is a very good place to find films. If you don’t live in New York or Los Angeles, it’s about the best you can do. I’m within 10 miles of a multiplicity of multiplexes, not to mention four theaters I would consider “art house” theaters or at least mixes of wider-appeal fare and smaller stuff.

According to Fandango and some back-of-the-envelope math, excluding documentaries and animation, there are 617 movie showings today — that’s just today, Friday — within 10 miles of my house.

Of those 617 showings, 561 of them — 90 percent — are stories about men or groups of men, where women play supporting roles or fill out ensembles primarily focused on men. The movies making up those 561 showings: Man Of Steel (143), This Is The End (77), The Internship (52), The Purge (49), After Earth (29), Now You See Me (56), Fast & Furious 6 (44), The Hangover Part III (16), Star Trek Into Darkness (34), The Great Gatsby (16), Iron Man 3 (18), Mud (9), The Company You Keep (4), Kings Of Summer (9), and 42 (5).

Thirty-one are showings of movies about balanced pairings or ensembles of men and women: Before Midnight (26), Shadow Dancer (4), and Wish You Were Here (1).

Twenty-five are showings of movies about women or girls: The East (8), Fill The Void (4), Frances Ha (9), and What Maisie Knew (4).

Of the seven movies about women or balanced groups, only one — the Israeli film Fill The Void — is directed by a woman, Rama Burshtein. That’s also the only one that isn’t about a well-off white American. (Well, Celine in Before Midnight is well-off, white and French, but she’s been living in the U.S.)

There are nearly six times as many showings of Man Of Steel alone as there are of all the films about women put together.

If I were limited to multiplexes, as people are in many parts of the country, the numbers would be worse. In many places, the number would be zero. Frances Ha is by far the most widely available of the four women-centered movies, and it’s at 213 theaters this weekend in the entire country. The East is at 115. What Maisie Knew is at 51. Fill The Void looks like it’s in about 20 locations, judging by its site.

The Internship is at 3,399.*

[*Note: I originally had understood these to be screen counts; they're actually theater counts. Not a huge difference with non-blockbusters less likely to play on multiple screens at the same place, and if anything, makes the possible disparity with something like The Internship greater, but it's different nonetheless. This doesn't affect the numbers for my own local theaters, though — those are just individual showtimes counted by hand.]

I want to stress this again: In many, many parts of the country right now, if you want to go to see a movie in the theater and see a current movie about a woman — any story about any woman that isn’t a documentary or a cartoon — you can’t. You cannot. There are not any. You cannot take yourself to one, take your friend to one, take your daughter to one.

There are not any.

By far your best shot, numbers-wise, at finding one that’s at least even-handedly featuring a man and a woman is Before Midnight (at 891 theaters) so I hope you like it. Because it’s pretty much that or a solid, impenetrable wall of movies about dudes.

Dudes in capes, dudes in cars, dudes in space, dudes drinking, dudes smoking, dudes doing magic tricks, dudes being funny, dudes being dramatic, dudes flying through the air, dudes blowing up, dudes getting killed, dudes saving and kissing women and children, and dudes glowering at each other.

Somebody asked me this morning what “the women” are going to do about this. I don’t know. I honestly am at the point where I have no idea what to do about it. Stop going to the movies? Boycott everything?

They put up Bridesmaids, we went. They put up Pitch Perfect, we went. They put up The Devil Wears Prada, which was in two-thousand-meryl-streeping-oh-six, and we went (and by “we,” I do not just mean women; I mean we, the humans), and all of it has led right here, right to this place. Right to the land of zippedy-doo-dah. You can apparently make an endless collection of high-priced action flops and everybody says “win some, lose some” and nobody decides that They Are Poison, but it feels like every “surprise success” about women is an anomaly and every failure is an abject lesson about how we really ought to just leave it all to The Rock.

Nobody remembers, it seems, how many people said Bridesmaids would fail. And it didn’t! But it didn’t matter.

My answer is that I have no idea what the women are going to do about it. It helps when critics, including men, care about the way women artists are treated and make it their problem to share, as Sam Adams did yesterday in a terrific piece about Sofia Coppola. It helps when people go out of their way to see any kind of film that’s about people other than themselves. It helps when we acknowledge that what we have right now is a Hollywood entertainment business that has pretty much entirely devoted itself to telling men’s stories — and to the degree that’s for business reasons, it’s because they’ve gotten the impression we’ve devoted ourselves to listening to men’s stories.

But for crying out loud, let’s at least notice. When it’s 90 percent here, it’s much worse elsewhere. [Copyright 2013 NPR]

Good morning!

First of all, my apologies to all the fathers out there for not wishing you a happy father’s day yesterday. My father is out of the country so of course I didn’t celebrate him yesterday. The day began to slipped by like any other Sunday, until I got a call from my cousin who flew up from LA to be with his father, my fave uncle, inviting me to meet them for a walk in the Redwoods. Aha! Yes, it is Father’s Day! It was delightful. I HOPE those of you that celebrated with your father had a delightful day as well!

Once again the victim, a woman,  is blamed for something a man has done. Here’s the write from ThinkProgress:

California Teacher Fired For Being A Victim Of Domestic Abuse

California teacher Carie Charlesworth was fired for the “crime” of being a victim of domestic violence, according to letters obtained by NBC San Diego.

The firing was prompted by Charlesworth’s abusive ex-husband Martin Charlesworth, who invaded the Holy Trinity School parking lot after a weekend where Carie had called the police on him three times, sending the school into lockdown.

Martin was sent to prison, but Carie herself was also punished. On April 11th, the school sent a letter to her informing her of her dismissal. The grounds? Her husband was dangerous:

We know from the most recent incident involving you and Mrs. Wright (the principal) while you were still physically at Holy Trinity School, that the temporary restraining order in effect were not a deterrent to him. Although we understand he is current incarcerated, we have no way of knowing how long or short a time he will actually serve and we understand from court files that he may be released as early as next fall. In the interest of the safety of the students, faculty and parents at Holy Trinity School, we simply cannot allow you to return to work there, or, unfortunately, at any other school in the Diocese.

Charlesworth cited the decision as an example of the pervasive stigma domestic violence victims face on top of the abuse itself. “That’s why women of domestic violence don’t come forward,” she told NBC. “They’re afraid of the way people are going to see them, view them, perceive them, treat them.”

Though a recent federal study of gendered violence found that over a third of American women experience intimate partner violence over the course of their lives, the fear Charlesworth describes deters reporting of these crimes with depressing frequency. According to one survey of the relevant data, “because of the stigma associated with intimate partner violence, the fact that it is an illegal activity, and the very real fear of potential retribution from a violent partner, respondents perpetrating or being victimized are less likely to answer questions about intimate partner violence than those who are not.” What goes for answering survey questions goes double for reporting a crime.

Victims can even face legal consequences for calling the police. If a victim generates enough nuisance citations (as defined by the local nuisance ordinance), calling in the ostensibly-protective authorities will often lead to the victim’s eviction. A study of one such ordinance in Milwaukee found that roughly a third of nuisance citations were responses to domestic violence incidents, and the most common landlord remedy was to evict the battered woman.

Charlesworth is planning to challenge her dismissal in court, but the school appears to have the upper legal hand as a consequence of a broadly worded religious exemption.

Readers: Because of the man, the woman potentially loses all around. The woman has been abused. She divorces him and gets a retraining order to protect herself. She is the victim. And yet, she loses her job because her ex-husband won’t stop harassing her, even though he is now in jail. Will she ever be rid of this man and live a happy normal life with her children, without her ex-husband affecting her life in some way, when her ex is out?

He has ruined her life. Her 4 children are affected by his bad behavior. His actions have gotten her fired from her job, and she has no idea how she is going to care for her children. Who knows what else may happen when he gets out of jail soon and seeks her out again.

Why isn’t more being done to the man to protect the woman? Obviously a restraining order isn’t enough, and doesn’t really work. We have enough evidence that shows that men don’t pay any attention to restraining orders. There obviously needs to be laws put into place that makes it more difficult for men – like he needs to be dropped off to live two states away - something.

How it is now is not working. The man should be inconvenienced. A mother and her children, the victims,  should not be the ones who suffer from any more pain or inconvenience to their lives from his abusive actions. The mother and children should be able to live a normal life without fear.

This man is like a disease that has no cure. And she, the victim gets blamed and she and her children suffer the consequences. In my opinion, she would have been better of if she had killed him in self-defense when he was abusing her. Listen to Robert, RT – Get a gun ladies, and level the playing field or you may suffer at the hands of your ex for many years to come, if you even make it away from him alive.

Sound harsh or extreme? What can I say, I read too many horrific stories where the ending is too tragic.

George: Nice to see that I am not the only one who feels such things. If you read my write from yesterday, you can see I feel the same same way about people who inflict such horrific acts.

James: Ooh I like that. Men like that usually end up being the biggest cowards. The weakling had such huge balls to kill kittens but when the table is turned, he will be begging and pissing in his pants for mercy. If it were my decision it would be way too late.

Brad: I agree. Notice how adult animals will take on baby animals that need caring, as if it were their own. Humans kill humans with little care of human life. So, as sick as it is, killing a few kittens is no big deal to some humans.

There are many comments from that post that I read this morning that echo my feelings as well.

Anonymous: Yes, thanks for the horrible reminder. Every time I hear about this, I give my Lucy a big hug. Unfortunately so many animals that are murdered for their fur aren’t as lucky as my Lucy girl.

Good morning!

I have always been against people buying and wearing furs because of the cruelty and pain that is inflicted upon animals that are tortured and killed for their furs. The amount of pain and suffering that animals go through in their last moments and sometimes hours, or even days before death finally gives them peace,  is just too much for me to bear. I can’t imagine how a human can take part in inflicting such suffering. But then, when humans can do such sick things to their own, with little thought and care, why would I think that they would have more of a conscious when it comes to animals.

I have been so focused on womens’ lives and the suffering that so many women endure daily, (and rightly so!) that although my passion for animal livelihood and safety has not lessened one bit, I have not blogged about the atrocities that continue for my furry friends around the world.

I blogged yesterday about the humane officer who killed the kittens. Today, I am posting about Wonderful Women Of The World who got naked for PETA and their anti-fur campaign.

Warning: The video is very beautifully done and the animal torture is very cruel and graphic.

Miss USA pageant winners Susie Castillo, Shandi Finnessey, Shanna Moakler, and Alyssa Campanella bare it all in their jaw-dropping new ad for PETA—shot by famed photographer Fadil Berisha—in a united effort to urge the pageant industry to do away with fur.

Every year, millions of animals—including foxes, minks, raccoons, rabbits, chinchillas, and even cats and dogs—are electrocuted, beaten, drowned, strangled, and skinned alive.

Despite knowing about the horrors that animals go through to make fur coats, some pageants still award furs to winners.

“I was so disgusted that I would wear this skin of this living being on my body and consider myself beautiful,” Shandi said. What would happen if that happened to a human being? We would be outraged. So what’s the difference?”

These women show that the greatest role models and community ambassadors are those who extend kindness to animals—after all, you can be a queen without making innocent animals endure terrible suffering. They are taking a strong position to protect animals by choosing to be fur-free. How about you?

Readers: Watching this video is torture for me. I am such and ‘eye for an eye’ kinda girl, that watching those who inflict such horrific pain and torture, makes me want to have them skinned alive so they too can experience what it is like to have their skin ripped off, enduring a slow and painful death. You can call me cruel and wrong for feeling this way but I can’t help it. It is the way I feel.

Please take  a stance. Give if you can. Pledge to go fur-free. And spread the word to help put an end to this cruelty.  Thank you!

Good morning.

I woke up this morning to a write about a humane officer who pulled out his gun and killed innocent kittens in front of young chldren. Yes, you read that correctly. A Humane officer? Really? That’s an oxymoron if there ever was one. Disgusting. Any officer who takes a gun and shoots innocent baby animals, and in front of young children, is far from humane.

Bob Accorti, Police Officer, Shoots Five Feral Kittens In Ohio

A police officer is under fire for shooting five kittens to death in front of children in North Ridgeville, Ohio.

The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wants animal cruelty charges to be pressed against Officer Bob Accorti, WKYC reported.

Accorti, who is the Humane Officer for the North Ridgeville Police Department, was dispatched to a home Monday after a homeowner reported that a family of feral cats was living in their yard, according to ABC 15.

The woman noted that the cat family was causing a flea problem that spread to her home. Her husband had already tried to remove the kittens himself, but they growled and hissed at him, according to an NRPD press release obtained by WTAM.

She told police that when Accorti showed up, he told her that the animal shelters were full but that the cats would go to “kitty heaven.” He then shot the five kittens, who were all between 8 and 10 weeks old, though the mother cat was able to flee with her life.

The homeowner noted that her four children, ages 5 months to 7 years, were watching from inside the house and started screaming and crying when the shooting began. The woman said she understood the animals were going to be euthanized, but she didn’t realize Accorti was going to shoot them next to her house.

NRPD Chief Mike Freeman wrote in the press release, “I have decided [Accorti's] actions were appropriate and have decided not to impose any disciplinary measures for the incident.”

He added, “Research and other animal organizations accept shooting as an acceptable means of euthanasia.”

The chief did admit that Accorti should have communicated better with the homeowner about how the animals would be killed.

Terese Landon, executive director of the Ohio SPCA, told The Morning Journal that she believes Accorti should be prosecuted for his actions.

“The kittens were just sitting there,” Landon said. “They didn’t have to die. They were only 10 months old at most and they still could have been socialized.”

Readers: And then you have the NRPD Chief decide that the officer’s actions were appropriate? Are you kidding? No doubt, once again, were seeing the actions of little dick men trying to prove their manhood and manliness through the trigger of a gun. Preying on innocent defenseless creatures takes no courage and strength, and is sickening enough. And then you do it in the company of children? This proves to the world that you have no feeling…no compassion and you’re still the little boy that never grew up and became a man. It seems that is the growing trend with men these days.

I am outraged by this boy’s behavior, and the fact that nothing is being done…yet. I HOPE the town of North Ridgeville, and the animal rights activists don’t give up on this.
