The American Dream Turned Into A Nightmare

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 19th March 2009

Good morning.

For those of you who want to continue to blame the Dems for the mortgage debacle, watch this video:

Owning your own home, is ‘The American Dream’. Bush says, “The American Dream is vibrant and alive.” Thank you Mr. Bush.  It’s vibrant and alive all right, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a ‘dream’. For many, their reality couldn’t be more of a nightmare.

~~~~~~~
Zen Lill: I’m excited for you that you had a great fashion show day – congrats! I hope that you have many more to come.
After reading all of the comments from yesterday, I really only have one thing to say. Anonymous #10 said it. When all is said, and a lot is said, it really comes down to what you said: “Their objections are so pointless, so confected, so illogical and so utterly self-destructive that it is difficult to see what their purpose is at all – except to see Obama fail.”  I truly believe that too. The repugs will do and say anything they can, not matter how it affects our country, or the world, when their main purpose is to see Obama fail. And it goes without saying but I will say it anyway, “And to amass as much wealth as possible by fleecing the American people.”
Oh I will say one more thing in regards to this topic. George: You seem to be our resident racist these days. I disagree with you. White men are going to destroy this country for good white men. White women look to Obama for salvation because white men have failed big time. As a white woman, I don’t look at the color of ones skin to determine whether or not the person is good or not. I look at their actions and are they walkin’ the talk. Obama is exemplary. I trust him; he does what he says he is going to do, and I support him totally.
Like you, Mary, “I love our Prez.”
I’m off to make myself a cup of hot cocoa. Impotent men: This could be your saving grace – throw away that Viagra and come and join me! :)
Peace & Love: “Live it & Give it”
Healthcare Reform: It’s As Easy As 1, 2, 3.
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 10th March 2009
Okay, well maybe it’s not that easy, but your participation in making it happen is. Our healthcare system is sicko.  At the end of January, John Conyers introduced his universal healthcare legislation - The bill – known last session as H.R. 676, is a fave of the healthcare reformers who back a single payer system.  I’m for that. - Put the private insurers out of business. Sound like we’re putting more people out of jobs?  Well…not so fast, Conyers says to hire back the employees.
“The Program shall provide that clerical, administrative, and billing personnel in insurance companies, doctors offices, hospitals, nursing facilities, and other facilities whose jobs are eliminated due to reduced administration (1) should have first priority in retraining and job placement in the new system; and (2) shall be eligible to receive 2 years of unemployment benefits.”
Some people don’t like the idea of government being in control of the healthcare system. But helloo…who is in control now? – who tells us who we can see and who we can’t see? The insurers. And quite frankly, I am sicko of how the system works. It’s obvious we need something new…something that’s going to benefit everyone. This healthcare system will. And Being that Obama is now our president, I trust that he is the one president that truly has our best interest at heart.  We will save billions and possibly trillions of dollars from the simple act of putting private insurers out of business and creating a healthy healthcare system….one that grows and works for the people.
These are just some of the benefits:
  • Every citizen of the US will be covered from birth to death.
  • No more pre-existing conditions to be excluded from coverage.
  • No more expensive deductibles or co-pays.
  • All prescription medications will be covered.
  • All dental and eye care will be included.
  • Mental health and substance abuse care will be fully covered.
  • Long term and nursing home services will be included.
  • You will always choose your own doctors and hospitals.
  • Costs of coverage will be assessed on a sliding scale basis.
  • Tremendously simplified system of medical administration
  • Total portability – your coverage not tied to any job or location.
  • Existing Medicare benefits for those over 65 will remain the same or be vastly improved in many cases.
Sounds good huh?
A few days ago I mentioned that we were going to get some sample letters together on some issues that were important to us and hopefully important to you too.  Healthcare reform is one of them.
Zen Lill and I spoke this past weekend and yesterday afternoon she e-mailed me a sample letter and the contact websites to post on our first topic…you guessed it: Healthcare Reform. If this is an important issue for you, which I hope it is, ZL has made it very simple to get involved.  I want to give a big thanks to her for gathering this information for me/us this morning.
Now, I’m going to make it even simpler by helping you use this information by following these easy steps:
Step 1:  Do your research. Yes, it may take a little bit of time but I’ve made it easy for you. Read about H.R. 676  and google it if you need more information. Get informed so that you can get behind it.
Step 2:  Read the following letter. If you like what this letter has to say and you believe in this bill, copy the following letter as is or edit to make it personal.
Sample Letter:
Dear Representative or Senator___________
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the passage of Medicare, we urge you to join us in a movement toward the most cost-effective health care coverage, that of public payer, private provider health care modeled on Medicare. Medicare is one of the most effective and popular programs ever created by the U. S. Congress. It has reduced poverty by providing a single large risk pool with single payer healthcare coverage for a large segment of our population, the disabled and the elderly. It has increased their productivity and quality of life, even as Medicare overhead costs remain a low 2-3%, much lower than those of private for-profit insurances.
As noted in a recent study, 60-70% of Americans favor government-backed health insurance for themselves and their families, as remedy to the following shortcomings of U.S. health care:
$270 billion of health care dollars annually go toward excess administrative costs
Over 18,000 people die annually due to lack of access to health care.
There are over 43 million uninsured, and more under-insured.
Medical costs account for almost 50 percent of U.S. personal bankruptcies.
The World Health Organization ranks the U.S. 37th of all industrialized nations for health care outcomes.
In response to the U.S. crisis of health care access, we urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 676 in the House, or a comparable bill in the Senate for improved Medicare for all in America.  Solutions proposed by H.R. 676, the United States National Health Insurance Act, are affirmed by the most recent study by the National Coalition on Health Care, citing single-risk-pool government-backed insurance as most cost-effective means to universal health care. Medicare for All would save our country hundreds of billions of dollars in administrative costs, while providing comprehensive coverage for all, with a full choice of doctors. No other initiative would provide such immediate benefits, while cutting costs for all sectors of society, e.g., education, big and small business, labor, etc. Our current inefficient, inflationary health care delivery system renders U.S. business increasingly less competitive in the world, and results in inflated costs of goods and services to consumers. Currently, $1,500 is added to the cost of each U.S.-made automobile alone, the result of cost-shifting due to increasing costs to corporations for employee health coverage.
We can no longer afford to squander 10′s of billions of dollars of tax subsidies (allocated by Medicare Prescription Reform) for an insurance industry that funnels a large percentage of our health care dollars toward corporate profits and administrative waste, while increasingly denying consumers primary health care access. We can do much better with a healthcare system that we own, that permits free choices, and ready health care access. No additional expenditure is needed; in fact, we would save billions of dollars. We already pay for it, and we want it to serve all ? a single-risk pool, universal, comprehensive healthcare system. We urge your support for H.R. 676, or a comparable bill in the Senate!
Sincerely,
Your Signature here
Full name
Address
Phone/e-mail address
Step 3:  Click here to send the letter to your representatives. This will take you to a page that will show you the map of the U.S. Click on your state and your house representative. From there you will be able to either e-mail them directly through the contact page, (simply copy and paste your letter into an e-mail) or you can copy the mailing address down and send your letter via snail mail. Your choice.
You’re not done yet :) Now send the same letter to congress. Click  here and it will take you to a page where you will see 3 drop down menus. You can either 1) choose a state, 2) choose a senator, or 3) choose a class. To make it easy, I suggest you use the 1) choose a state drop down menu. When you click on your state, your senators names will appear with their e-mail and mailing address information. Use the web form for e-mail or copy the mailing address for snail mail. Again, your choice.
I suggest mailing your letter to the representative in your area and both Senators, if your state has more than one – most do.
Other hints: Remember to put your name and address on the letter and on the envelope. (You can inc your phone/e-mail address if you’d like to but it isn’t essential).  Just keep in mind, no one (in the US government) acknowledges a letter without contact information.
Simple yes? Now you have no excuse. Just do it.  (Thanks)
michelle
Here’s A Few More Things You Might Not Know About Obama’s Plan
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th March 2009
Turns out there are way more than 10 amazing things in Obama’s budget. Here’s a few more:
  1. Stops unnecessary government subsidies to big banks, health insurance companies and big agribusinesses.13,14,15
  2. Expands access to early childhood education and improves schools by investing in programs that make sure every child has a qualified, strong teacher.16
  3.
  4. Negotiates for better prescription drug prices using Medicaid’s tremendous bargaining power.17
  5. Expands access to family planning for low-income women.18
  6. Caps the pollution that causes global warming, and makes polluters pay to support clean energy innovation.19
If any of you want to discuss any of these from today or yesterday, blog me, and let’s get a discussion going.
Zen Lill:  Great suggestions for the readers. We will talk this weekend – promise. :) You have a groovin’ day too!
Doug:  You are too funny – great come back.
Happy Friday everyone! – Talk soon…
Obama Has A Plan….Give Him A Chance
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 2nd March 2009
Hi DNSR!: Good to hear from you again. Recession zin? Pray tell, what is that? :) I have heard about these orphanages and I am grateful for them. These elephants need protection and family. Thanks for commenting. Now…what else can you report? Especially about the LTTE…I and inquiring readers such as Shelia want to know.
Lance: Funny you should mention Viviane Castro – I saw the photo of her with Obama on her thigh – very cool. And if I were Michelle Obama,  I wouldn’t worry for a minute about a stained dress showing up in the white house. He is definitely not a Clinton.
Anna:  I read the article that you posted, along with your comments. I really do not know much about the history of Guam except that it is a US territory, ceded to the U.S. by Spain. No wonder you/they feel as you do. Your comment peaked my interest. Hmm…Perhaps I feel an article brewing. Anyway, good luck in the pageant! Keep us updated.
Miki: I NEVER take a day off. I am always here. You say, ‘No way to treat the troops.’ Hmm…exactly what are you saying? As far as the naysayers: They don’t bother me – it makes the banter interesting. But you are correct – they must find something interesting here or they wouldn’t keep coming back. You say you love my blog – maybe they do too.
Robert: Nice to see that I am not the only one requesting that the ‘anons’ pick a name. If I was going to be anonymous, it is much more fun to have a name than just be an anonymous anonymous. :) We’ll see if anyone takes your advice. If not, we’ll live with it.
As far as the rest of your comment, I agree, if even half the stuff Anonz has told us was true, we had better get in the game.
Aybak: I agree with you. Men are especially attuned to their own needs. Whereas women are inherent care givers. I appreciate the differences between men and women and what they bring to the table. What I don’t like is when actions from either sex have an affect on my livelihood or the livelihood of others. Other than that, live and let live.
And you raise a very valid question.  The ‘Do unto others…’ always comes to mind with questions like this. It is a simple mantra but one that not many pay attention to.
Zen Lill:  I got your phone message too. I think I will be available late afternoon on Wednesday.  I look forward to reading your draft or collaborating one with you.  Good luck with the new job! How did the open go yesterday?
Cleo, Brooke, Linda & Frank and anonymous ( yes all 3 of you): And I will add: Do not bank with Chase either. They totally screwed me with escalating rates and at that time I had excellent credit.   And yes it’s true, if you have good credit and pay monthly, on time, you will be in good standing, and the rates most likely will not go up.  But the moment you screw up, they hit you with the late charges, and ridiculously increased rates. Some people are just not responsible and pay late, or miss monthly payments consistently.  They deserve to have their rates increased. But the ones who are truly responsible and have made payments on time and their credit is in good standing, should be given a break. Shit happens some times. And in these time a lot of shit is happening.
I do know that the best thing to do is communicate with them immediately, the moment you are aware that you may have trouble making a payment.  Whenever I have screwed up I have been able to have the late charges removed. But again, I make a call and when they see that I have a good record, they usually work with me. Unfortunately this is not true for all banks. I have dealt with ones who won’t budge at all. The present is like nothing we have dealt with before.
I don’t know about all of the credit cards that you all have, but mine have given me 1 month to 3 months to either close my accounts or accept their new rates.  Luckily, I have pretty good credit  – not excellent like I used to, but who does anymore? So when I got letters these letters telling me that my rates were going to be raised unless I locked in the current rate by closing them, I of course closed them.  But I am with you, CUT YOUR CARDS UP! I don’t use mine anymore. I am just paying them off. I can promise, that if I ever use a card again,  I am paying it off monthly or else I will not use it.  The funny thing is, we used our cards to help our businesses grow, not for frivolous desires. As I look back, part of me wishes we did use them for fun – at least we would have great memories. :)
Doug said to me the other day, ‘Why don’t we all just stop paying on our credit cards?’ – And he meant EVERYONE. These banks are getting bailed out and we the taxpayers are the ones who are going to have to pay for it, not to mention the late charges, and high interest rates.  Could we have an impact with the banks it we all refused to make one more payment on our credit cards?
AH:  Good to hear from you again.  What you say about the banks makes so much sense. But I still ask, ‘Why do the banks continue to be so greedy with us, the credit card holders, the taxpayers, the ones that that are bailing them out? Are they not taking enough from us already? I ask this rhetorically as I know the answer, but it still continues to baffle me that the greed does not end…that the greed is literally bankrupting our country.
I believe that President Obama has a plan too and I totally back him. We voted him in and I trust he has our best interest at heart. I read and hear that many do not agree with his plan, but I too agree that we must give him a chance. He is the first president that has set out and is doing what he promised he would do. He is setting a new precedent on so many different levels.  I have faith that he will clean house.
Got to run.
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle
California: Out Of Cash?
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 17th February 2009
I am a local girl – was born in the Bay Area…San Francisco to be exact. Lately so many of my girlfriends have been posting old high school pictures of  ‘the gang’ on facebook.  It has been a trip reconnecting with so many and seeing the past pics.
I remember when I graduated from Redwood, so many of my friends were just dying to get out of here. Many moved out of state and a few to LA where they went to college, or just to get away to some where new. Me? I did the LA thing but only for a year to go to fashion design school, and then I headed back to Marin. And shortly thereafter….San Francisco.
I know it may sound weird but during my short time living In LA, I would drive back home for the holidays, and the closer I got to home, the more everything looked so much cleaner, clearer, and brighter. Even the air was different.  In LA, the grime and city gunk clung to my hair daily. And in the Bay Area, it was rare that I had a bad hair day. That being said though, I still enjoyed the fast-paced life in LA and I still frequent it and think, ‘Could I live here again?’ Hmm…I may be a California girl, and I may love to party in LA, but my heart belongs to San Francisco. The city by the bay always calls me back.
My point being that when all of my friends were jonesing to get out of here, I never lost my appreciation of the clean air, the steep SF hills, The glorious Mt Tamalpais, and jaunts to my favorite local beach, Stinson.
Whenever someone said, ‘I’m outta here!” I would say, ‘Go. Leave and experience. You don’t appreciate what we have here…..you’ll realize and you’ll be back.’ How could one not appreciate one of the most amazing places on earth? Everyone wants to live in the Bay Area – People flock from all over the world, and I am blessed to have been born here. I know no different.
Not to say that I have not traveled. I have. I have visited some of the most beautiful cities and some of the poorest countries in the world.  And I have an appreciation for all of them – they are all special in one way or another. But my heart is here. Not to say that I could not live somewhere else for a little while; I could.  Although, I don’t live in the city I still call San Francisco my home. I am a bridge away and there as often as I can be. I will move back there someday soon. But in the mean time, I have never run short of appreciating my blessedness of living here.
And then today when I read that the State of California is headed off the fiscal rails, my heart sank.  My beloved city, resides in a state that has fallen into deep financial straits.
The state, has laid off scores of workers and put hundreds more on unpaid furloughs. It has stopped paying counties and issuing income tax refunds and halted thousands of infrastructure projects. This morning, 20,000 layoff notices will go out.
Why? Because California is nearly out of cash – Could we go bankrupt?  How is that possible that a state, with one of the most famous, most visited cities in the world, is nearly out of cash?
California has also lost access to much of the credit markets, nearly unheard of among state municipal bond issuers. Recently, Standard & Poor’s downgraded the state’s bond rating to the lowest in the nation.
California’s woes will almost certainly leave a jagged fiscal scar on the nation’s most populous state, an outgrowth of the financial triptych of above-average unemployment, high foreclosure rates and plummeting tax revenues, and the state’s unusual budgeting practices.
“No other state is in the kind of crisis that California is in,” said Iris J. Lav, the deputy director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal research group in Washington.
Let me repeat….”No other state is in the kind of crisis that California is in(!)” I knew it was bad here; it has affected me and I can see the effects all around me…but this bad?
California’s legislature is dominated by democrats. No surprise here. Leaders have been unable to gather enough support from Republican lawmakers, who tend on average to be more conservative than the majority of California’s Republican voters.  Governor Schwarzenegger has failed to muster votes among lawmakers in his own party. Again, no surprise.
Furthermore, Republican leaders in the Senate and the Assembly who have agreed to get on board with a plan have been unable to persuade a few key lawmakers to join them. The package needs at least three Republican votes in each house, to join with the 51 Democrats in the Assembly and the 24 Democrats in the Senate.  We know the Republicans are holding things back. Again, no surprise here either.
“It is a dramatic time,” said Darrell Steinberg, the State Senate’s president pro tempore. “The solvency of the state is on the line. It is really quite a system where the fate of the state rests upon the shoulders of a couple of members of a minority party. The system frankly needs to be changed.”
Hmm…Isn’t that interesting. Once again, “the fate of the state rests upon the shoulders of a couple of members…”
“Yes, we need change. How many times do we have to say it?”
Oh, what’s a California girl to do?
